</excerpt>

Rolling around the diplomatic clash with India, Maldivian President Mohamed Muizzu has asked India to withdraw its military troops from the archipelago nation by March 15. This means that no Indian military will be allowed in Maldives after March 15.

According to the government data, there are about 88 Indian military personnel in Maldives. This decision comes days after President Muizzu returned from China.

A minor presence of the Indian military was present for several years in the Maldives after the request of the previous Maldivian government to primarily assist with marine security and disaster relief.

However, the relationship between the two countries rusted after two Maldives serving employees made a derogatory remark on Prime Minister Narendra Modi over his visit to the Indian Island – Lakshadweep. After which the netizens started comparing the two or say boycotting Maldives.

Amid Muizzu’s recent visit to China, he indirectly took a jibe on India over the recent clash. He, without using the name of any country said, “We may be small, but that doesn’t give you the license to bully us”.

He added, “We aren’t in anyone’s backyard. We are an independent and sovereign state.”

</excerpt>

Amidst the escalating tension between India and the Maldives, Alliance Air, the sole airline operating flights to Lakshadweep, has initiated additional services due to a surge in passenger demand. Alliance Air, the exclusive Indian carrier serving Lakshadweep, has introduced extra flights on the Kochi-Agatti-Kochi route. The supplementary flights will operate on Sundays and Wednesdays, providing increased accessibility to the picturesque islands.

Currently, Alliance Air operates daily flights utilizing 70-seater aircraft between Kochi in Kerala and Agatti island, which houses a regional airport catering to Lakshadweep. The airline has been operating at full capacity, with tickets sold out until March. In response to heightened demand, an airline official noted that an additional flight was added, and if necessary, the frequency could be further increased.

The move comes as Lakshadweep gains prominence, particularly after Prime Minister Modi’s visit to the Union Territory on January 22, where he shared delightful images and emphasized the potential for beach tourism in the island cluster. However, a social media post by Maldivian Deputy Minister of Youth Empowerment, Mariyam Shiuna, mocking and disrespecting PM Modi’s visit, sparked outrage and calls for boycotting the Maldives.

Meanwhile, travel portals report a record surge in queries for Lakshadweep, indicating a growing interest in exploring the picturesque destination. The decision by Alliance Air to enhance services aligns with the broader context of fostering tourism to the Indian archipelago and ensuring convenient connectivity for eager travelers.

</excerpt>

Amid diplomatic tensions stemming from disparaging remarks made by Maldivian ministers and officials against Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent visit to Lakshadweep, the administration of the Indian archipelago has revealed plans to expand its tourism activities. Social media posts by Maldivian junior ministers and officials sparked outrage online, leading to cancellations of scheduled visits to the Maldives and diplomatic actions by India.

Despite the controversy, Lakshadweep’s administration is pushing forward with initiatives to tap into its tourism potential. Proposals have been submitted to the Union government, outlining strategies to enhance tourism in the island cluster. Among the proposals is the construction of a larger airport on Minicoy Island, capable of accommodating Airbus-type aircraft, in addition to hotel projects under the Smart City initiative on various islands.

Minicoy Island, strategically positioned near the Maldives, is considered a focal point for the tourism expansion plans. The efforts aim to attract more tourists from across India and overseas. As part of the tourism promotion, liquor sales are now permitted at designated locations with the approval of the tourism department, and locally produced non-fermented toddy called Neera adds to the diverse offerings.

Lakshadweep, home to 36 islands of which only ten are inhabited, traditionally relies on fishing and coconut farming as primary occupations. The lack of diverse economic activities has prompted the administration to prioritize tourism as a key driver of development. Women’s self-help groups are actively involved in crafting products from coconut and fish.

While travel to Lakshadweep is facilitated by ship or flight, visitors must obtain prior permission from the administration of the Union Territory. The lack of hospitals poses a significant challenge for residents, who often need to travel to Kochi for better medical treatment. Similarly, higher education opportunities are limited, requiring residents to rely on institutions in Kerala and other states.

The recent diplomatic row between India and the Maldives has added complexity to the situation. In response to distasteful comments and unsolicited comparisons made by Maldivian officials, New Delhi summoned the Maldivian envoy for clarification. The tensions have led to increased scrutiny of the Maldives and a surge of interest in Lakshadweep as an alternative tourist destination.

As Lakshadweep advances its tourism expansion plans, the administration remains committed to overcoming challenges and positioning the archipelago as a sought-after destination for travelers, showcasing its unique natural beauty and cultural richness.

Amid a diplomatic row between India and the Maldives, the Maldives Association of Tour and Travel Operators (MATATO) has extended an appeal to EaseMyTrip, an India-based travel aggregator, urging the platform to reinstate flight bookings to the picturesque island nation. The plea underscores the vital role of Indian tourists in bolstering the Maldivian economy and follows controversial comments made by Maldivian ministers about Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

MATATO’s heartfelt request, articulated in a statement addressed to EaseMyTrip CEO Nishant Pitti, expresses gratitude for the enduring friendship and partnership between the Maldives and India. It highlights the deep-rooted bonds that connect the nations, transcending politics. The association emphasizes the significance of Indian tourists, portraying them as cherished brothers and sisters contributing substantially to the success of the Maldivian tourism sector.

The appeal comes in the wake of EaseMyTrip’s decision to suspend flight bookings via its platform as a response to contentious remarks made by Maldivian ministers. MATATO urges the travel aggregator to look past these regrettable comments, which, according to the association, do not reflect the sentiments of Maldivians in general. The association encourages EaseMyTrip to consider the broader context and the enduring relationships between the people of the Maldives and India.

Indian tourists have played a pivotal role in the post-Covid recovery of the Maldivian tourism industry, topping the charts for foreign arrivals. Over two lakh Indian visitors were recorded in the past year, making them an indispensable force in the sector’s rejuvenation. Tourism constitutes over two-thirds of the Maldives’ GDP, employing approximately 44,000 Maldivians. MATATO underscores the potential adverse impact on the tourism-dependent economy, urging for unity and solidarity.

The statement issued by MATATO highlights the economic significance of Indian tourists, providing vital support to guest houses and small to medium-sized enterprises within the Maldives. Over the past two years, more than 4.5 lakh Indian tourists have traveled to the island nation, showcasing the enduring popularity of the Maldives among Indian travelers. The association calls on EaseMyTrip to reconsider its decision and resume facilitating travel to the Maldives, allowing Indian tourists to continue contributing to the nation’s economic well-being.

In expressing gratitude for the enduring friendship, MATATO appeals for a focus on unity and cooperation between the two nations. The association asserts that divisive actions and statements should be avoided, emphasizing the need for a harmonious relationship between the Maldives and India. The statement reinforces the idea that the bonds between the nations extend beyond transient political issues.

The ongoing diplomatic strain arose after three Maldivian ministers made critical comments about Prime Minister Modi, resulting in their suspension. The Maldives government deemed the remarks unacceptable, leading to a measured response from India. As the situation unfolds, MATATO’s plea serves as a testament to the interconnectedness of nations, transcending political differences for the collective benefit of their people.

</excerpt>

In the midst of the ongoing tension between the Maldives and India, the Maldives Association of Tourism Industry (MATI) has strongly criticized derogatory comments made by officials in the tourism-dependent nation against Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Indian populace.

Describing India as a close neighbor and ally, MATI emphasized India’s consistent role as a first responder to various crises in the history of the Maldives. In a statement, MATI expressed gratitude, stating, “India is one of our closest neighbors and allies. India has always been a first responder to various crises throughout our history, and we are immensely grateful to the close relationship that the government as well as the people of India have maintained with us.”

Highlighting India’s significant contributions to the Maldives’ tourism industry, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic, MATI noted that India has been a consistent and substantial contributor to the sector. The association conveyed its wish for the enduring relationship between the two nations and pledged to avoid actions or speech that could negatively impact their strong bond.

The controversy arose when the Maldives deputy minister, along with other cabinet members and government officials, made disrespectful remarks regarding PM Modi’s visit to Lakshadweep. Despite the uproar, Indians, including cricketers and film celebrities, showed support for local beach destinations and endorsed PM Modi’s initiative to promote beach tourism in Lakshadweep.

In response to the remarks, the Maldives government distanced itself from the comments made by its ministers. Maldivian Minister of Foreign Affairs Moosa Zameer emphasized that such remarks against foreign leaders are unacceptable and do not reflect the official position of the Maldives government. The Indian High Commissioner to Maldives, Munu Mahawar, held a pre-arranged meeting with Ali Naseer Mohamed, Ambassador at Large, to discuss bilateral issues, indicating diplomatic engagement.

Former Maldivian President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih condemned the use of hateful language against India by Maldivian government officials and stressed the enduring friendship between the two countries. Solih emphasized the need to prevent such remarks from negatively impacting the age-old relationship between India and the Maldives.

The calls for action stem from derogatory remarks made by some Maldivian ministers against PM Modi. While MakeMyTrip highlighted its campaign for Indian destinations, users demanded the removal of the Maldives as a booking option.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter), MakeMyTrip shared the surge in searches and introduced its campaign. The post read, “We have observed a 3400% increase in on-platform searches for Lakshadweep ever since Honorable PM’s visit.
Despite the company’s efforts to promote Indian destinations, users expressed their support for the decision made by EaseMyTrip to suspend Maldives bookings “indefinitely.” The controversy over derogatory comments by Maldivian ministers coincides with President Mohamed Muizzu’s first state visit to China from January 8-12, deviating from the tradition of most Maldivian leaders choosing New Delhi for their initial international visit.

In the ongoing diplomatic dispute between India and the Maldives, Lakshadweep Administrator Praful Khoda Patel conveyed a resolute message, stating that India would not tolerate any insult to its Prime Minister. The strained ties between the two nations escalated when three Maldives ministers, known for their pro-China stance, made critical comments, including remarks targeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Administrator Patel, in an exclusive interview with NDTV, emphasized that the comments from the Maldivian ministers challenged India’s dignity. He expressed gratitude for the widespread support from the country, highlighting that the entire nation stood in solidarity with the Prime Minister and Lakshadweep. However, he dismissed the notion of seeking a public apology from the Maldives, emphasizing that the disciplined actions against the ministers demonstrated India’s firm stance.

“We are not going to talk about it (a public apology)… our values are different… they did not need to make such comments. They have been punished by the government for their actions. This showed India will not tolerate any insult to its PM,” Patel asserted.

The diplomatic rift originated when Maldivian ministers Maryam Shiuna, Malsha Shareef, and Mahzoom Majid posted critical remarks about Prime Minister Modi on social media platform X. This came after the Prime Minister shared visuals from his Lakshadweep visit, sparking social media users to promote Lakshadweep as an alternative holiday destination.

Reacting swiftly, the Maldives suspended the ministers involved, acknowledging the inappropriateness of such posts from government positions. However, the incident has evolved into a broader political and diplomatic issue, leading to opposition lawmakers in the Maldives using it to criticize the ruling party.

Former President Mohamed Nasheed condemned the remarks as “appalling” and urged President Mohamed Muizzu to distance his government from the comments. India has taken diplomatic action by summoning the Maldives envoy in Delhi.

Tensions between the two nations had been simmering, particularly with the election of Mohamed Muizzu, perceived as a pro-China leader. His call for the withdrawal of Indian troops from the Maldives added fuel to the already strained relations between India and the Maldives.

</excerpt>

A diplomatic row unfolded between India and the Maldives, leading to the suspension of three Maldivian ministers after they made derogatory remarks about Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The controversy originated when a video of PM Modi on a Lakshadweep beach was posted by Maldivian minister Mariyam Shiuna, who later deleted the post. In response, the Deputy Minister of Youth Empowerment, Information, and Arts, Hassan Zihan, referred to PM Modi as a ‘clown’ and a ‘puppet of Israel,’ sparking outrage on social media.

The Maldives government swiftly took action, suspending the responsible ministers from their positions. Maldivian Foreign Ministry, in a statement, clarified that the derogatory remarks were personal opinions and did not represent the official stance of the government. Despite this, the incident triggered a ripple effect, impacting various sectors and relationships between the two nations.

The fallout has led to significant repercussions, including the suspension of flight bookings by EaseMyTrip and the cancellation of thousands of hotel reservations and flight tickets by Indian tourists. The controversy began when a minister and other leaders in the Maldives used offensive language against PM Modi, triggering a social media backlash.

Mass Cancellations: Over 8,000 hotel bookings and 2,500 flight tickets to the Maldives have been canceled by Indian tourists following the incident. India constitutes a significant portion of the Maldives’ annual tourist influx.

Tourism Decline Predicted: Rajiv Mehra, President of the Indian Association of Tour Operators, anticipates a substantial decline in travel to the Maldives within the next 20–25 days. The diplomatic tensions are already impacting inquiries and future bookings.

Social Media Boycott: The controversy has led to the trending hashtag ‘BoycottMaldives’ on social media, with calls for boycotting the Maldives as a tourism destination. Indians are encouraged to explore alternative destinations like Lakshadweep.

Celebrities Join Campaign: Bollywood actors, including John Abraham and Randeep Hooda, have endorsed the #ExploreIndianIslands campaign on X, praising the beauty of Indian islands like Lakshadweep, Andaman, and Nicobar.

Akshay Kumar’s Condemnation: Actor Akshay Kumar condemned the “hateful and racist” remarks from the Maldives, urging people to explore Indian islands and support domestic tourism.
Maldivian Government’s Distancing: The Maldivian government distanced itself from the derogatory remarks, emphasizing that they were personal opinions and did not represent the official stance. Action against those making such remarks was not ruled out.

Former Leaders’ Criticism: Former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih condemned the “hateful” language, stressing the long-standing friendship between India and the Maldives. Former foreign minister Abdullah Shahid called the remarks “reprehensible and odious,” urging the government to reprimand the officials.

The diplomatic row has sparked a broader discussion on social media, potentially affecting the Maldives’ tourism-dependent economy. Former leaders emphasize the importance of resolving the matter as soon as possible to preserve the two countries’ long-standing friendship.

He expressed the Centre’s unwavering commitment to the progress of the islands. Addressing a public function upon his arrival at Agatti Airport, Modi highlighted the significant possibilities that Lakshadweep presents, pointing out that the islands had faced neglect for many years after gaining independence.

Optimistic about the recently introduced ice plant at Agatti, the Prime Minister emphasized its potential to enhance seafood processing capabilities on the island. He acknowledged the establishment of both an airport and an ice plant on Agatti. Modi also mentioned the commencement of tuna fish exports from Lakshadweep, contributing to increased income for the fishermen in the union territory.

Discussing new development initiatives, the PM referred to the inauguration of a solar plant and an aviation fuel depot, aimed at addressing Lakshadweep’s electricity and energy needs. He specifically noted the provision of tapped water connections to all houses on Agatti Island and reiterated the government’s commitment to ensuring houses, toilets, electricity, and cooking gas for the underprivileged.

Modi affirmed, “The Government of India is working with full commitment for the development of the entire Lakshadweep, including Agatti.”

Subsequently, the Prime Minister chaired a review meeting to assess Lakshadweep’s progress. One transformative initiative includes the Kochi-Lakshadweep Islands Submarine Optical Fiber Connection (KLI-SOFC) project, aimed at overcoming slow internet speed challenges on Lakshadweep Island. The completed project, to be inaugurated by the PM, will increase internet speed by over 100 times, connecting Lakshadweep through a dedicated submarine optical fiber cable.

The Low Temperature Thermal Desalination (LTTD) plant at Kadmat, set to produce 1.5 lakh litres of clean drinking water daily, will also be inaugurated. Additionally, Modi will dedicate Functional Household Tap Connections (FHTC) in all households on Agatti and Minicoy islands.

Other projects to be inaugurated include the first-ever battery-backed solar power project in Lakshadweep at Kavaratti, the foundation stone laying for the renovation of the primary health care facility in Kalpeni, and the construction of five model Anganwadi centers in Androth, Chetlat, Kadmat, Agatti, and Minicoy.

During his visit to Tamil Nadu, Prime Minister Modi will be attending the 38th Convocation Ceremony of Bharathidasan University in Tiruchirappalli, where he will be the Chief Guest. In Tiruchirappalli, the Prime Minister will also be inaugurating and dedicating several development projects worth over Rs 19,850 crore.

These projects are related to aviation, rail, road, oil and gas, shipping, and higher education sectors. One of the highlights of the visit is the inauguration of the new terminal building at Tiruchirappalli International Airport, which has been developed at a cost of over Rs 1100 crore.

The new terminal has state-of-the-art amenities and features to enhance passenger convenience and has the capacity to serve more than 44 lakh passengers annually.

Additionally, Prime Minister Modi will be dedicating multiple railway projects to the nation during his visit. These projects include the doubling of the Salem-Magnesite Junction-Omalur-Mettur Dam section, the doubling of the rail line section from Madurai to Tuticorin, and the electrification of rail lines in Tiruchchirappalli-Manamadurai-Virudhunagar, Virudhunagar-Tenkasi Junction, and Sengottai-Tenkasi Junction-Tirunelveli-Tiruchendur.

These railway projects will not only improve the rail capacity for freight and passengers but also contribute to the economic development and employment generation in Tamil Nadu.

Prime Minister is set to inaugurate five road sector projects in the region. These projects include a 39 km four-lane road for the Trichy – Kallagam section of NH-81, a 60 km long 4/2-laning of the Kallagam – Meensurutti section of NH-81, a 29 km four-lane road for the Chettikulam – Natham section of NH-785, an 80 km long two-lane road with paved shoulder for the Karaikudi – Ramanathapuram section of NH-536, and a 44 km long four-laning of a section of NH-179A Salem – Tirupathur – Vaniyambadi Road.

These road projects aim to enhance the safety and efficiency of travel for the people in the region. They will also improve connectivity to important industrial and commercial centers such as Trichy, Srirangam, Chidambaram, Rameshwaram, Dhanushkodi, Uthirakosamangai, Devipattinam, Erwadi, and Madurai, among others, according to the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO).

In addition, the Prime Minister will inaugurate the General Cargo Berth-II (Automobile Export/Import Terminal-II & Capital Dredging Phase-V) of Kamarajar Port. This development is expected to strengthen the country’s trade, boost economic growth, and generate employment opportunities, as stated by the PMO.

Furthermore, the Prime Minister will dedicate the Demonstration Fast Reactor Fuel Reprocessing Plant (DFRP) at the Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research (IGCAR), Kalpakkam.

The DFRP, which was developed at a cost of Rs 400 crore, features a unique design that can reprocess both carbide and oxide fuels discharged from fast reactors. It is a significant milestone towards the establishment of large commercial-scale fast reactor fuel reprocessing plants. The DFRP is entirely designed by Indian scientists, according to an official statement from the PMO.

Later, at approximately 3:15 PM, the Prime Minister is scheduled to arrive in Agatti, Lakshadweep, where he will deliver a speech at a public event. The PMO has stated that the Prime Minister is determined to address the issue of slow internet speed in Lakshadweep.

To achieve this, he initiated the Kochi-Lakshadweep Islands Submarine Optical Fiber Connection (KLI – SOFC) project, which was announced during his Independence Day speech in August 2020 at Red Fort. The project has now been completed and will be inaugurated by the Prime Minister. This initiative will significantly enhance internet speed, increasing it by more than 100 times, from 1.7 Gbps to 200 Gbps. It will also mark the first-ever connection of Lakshadweep through a Submarine Optic Fibre Cable.

Furthermore, the Prime Minister will dedicate the Low Temperature Thermal Desalination (LTTD) plant at Kadmat to the nation. This plant will produce 1.5 lakh litres of clean drinking water every day.

Additionally, the Functional Household Tap Connections (FHTC) in all households of Agatti and Minicoy islands will also be dedicated to the nation. Among the other projects to be dedicated to the nation is the solar power plant at Kavaratti, which is the first battery-backed solar power project in Lakshadweep. This project will help reduce dependency on diesel-based power generation.
