While social media laughed, Kuwait’s Ministry of Information launched an internal investigation, suspended the studio manager, and pledged stricter media oversight.
</excerpt>

Live television is notoriously unpredictable, and there are moments of surprise, usually funny that are part of its allure. One of those moments recently happened on Kuwait Television’s morning show ‘Ishraqah’, when a food delivery rider easily strolled onto the live set, surprising everyone.

The incident took place in a live interview with historian and astronomer Adel Al Saadoun on the Kuwait TV state television channel. In the gone-viral video, the delivery partner is seen walking across the floor of the studio with a delivery bag on his arm, slowing down momentarily as if suddenly realizing his mistake, before nonchalantly walking out of the frame.

“A man is walking past us… He’s a delivery guy,” Al Saadoun commented, clearly shocked during the live transmission.

A caption translating a posted video read, “A humorous moment at Kuwait Television studios when a delivery man walked into the studio and appeared on air during an interview with the astronomer and historian Adel Al-Saadoun, who did not appreciate the presenter’s trick and answered bluntly that this individual was a delivery man with orders.”

Watch:

Social Media Reactions

The clip rapidly went viral, captivating audiences and eliciting mixed reactions. Some viewed the segment as funny, while others complimented everyone on how well they reacted to the unplanned interruption. Others wondered how the food delivery worker had gotten so easily onto the live set.

One social media user quipped, “He came to deliver food and ended up delivering a national unscripted smile.”

Another joked, “Someone was too lazy to meet him at the studio door.” With tongue-in-cheek humor, one comment said, “Delivery till your table, sir.”

Another viewer did the same thing and shared a similar experience: “I saw an incident just like this one on the Al Arabiya news channel. I was watching them late at night, and a cleaning staff member came with a broom, sweeping the floor as the presenter was reading the news.”

Another added, “Free advertising for the delivery company.”

Saadoun Clarifies the Incident

Subsequently, Adel Al Saadoun took to social media to explain the situation, revealing that the broadcast had taken place in a big hall at the Kuwait Institute of Scientific Research, not within a closed studio, hence the delivery man had unknowingly walked through the live broadcast.

The Ministry of Information reacted by stating that the technical staff involved in the broadcast had initiated an internal investigation, and the studio manager had been suspended pending further investigation into the incident, according to Kuwaiti newspaper Al Rai.

The ministry reaffirmed its dedication to upholding standards of quality in state media, confirming that it was dealing with the issue seriously. Officials also mentioned restructuring news operations, which would include administrative reorganization and the implementation of a new visual identity for the channel, Gulf News reported.

</excerpt>

In a major escalation in West Asia, Iran confirmed that it launched missile strikes on the US-run Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar as retaliation for recent American attacks on its nuclear facilities. The strike has prompted Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait, Iraq, and the United Arab Emirates to shut down their airspace “until further notice,” disrupting aviation routes across one of the world’s busiest regions for international air travel.

Gulf Tensions Soar After Missile Strikes

Iran’s National Security Council released a statement on Monday, confirming the strike. “In response to the US aggressive and insolent action against Iran’s nuclear sites and facilities, a few hours ago, the powerful armed forces of the Islamic Republic of Iran struck the US air base in Al-Udeid, Qatar,” the statement read. The council also noted that the number of missiles used matched the number of bombs dropped by the US during its recent attacks.

While Iran insisted the operation posed “no threat” to Qatar, its government strongly condemned the missile strike. “We express the State of Qatar’s strong condemnation of the attack on Al Udeid Air Base by the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps, and consider it a flagrant violation of the State of Qatar’s sovereignty and airspace, as well as of international law,” said foreign ministry spokesman Majed Al-Ansari.

Airspace Closures Disrupt Aviation

Following the attack, Qatar announced the temporary closure of its airspace, citing “precautionary measures” in response to regional instability. This forced multiple flights to divert from Doha.

Other Gulf nations followed suit. Bahrain suspended air traffic, calling the move “a precautionary measure in light of recent regional developments,” according to Bahrain News Agency. Kuwait’s Civil Aviation Directorate also declared an indefinite airspace closure, citing security concerns and regional precedents.

The United Arab Emirates joined the precautionary measures. Flight tracking website Flightradar24 confirmed the disruption, stating, “Lots of aircraft are forced to turn around.”

A US defence official confirmed that Al Udeid was targeted by both short-range and medium-range ballistic missiles launched from Iran, but added, “there are no reports of US casualties.”

The Al Udeid base is one of the US military’s most critical assets in West Asia, and the latest exchange underscores rising regional instability with broader implications for global security and air travel.

The incident occurred in Obulavaripalli village in Annamayya district on the night of December 6-7. Rajampet sub-divisional police officer, N Sudhakar, confirmed that Prasad bludgeoned Anjaneyulu to death with an iron rod while the victim was sleeping outside his home.

Confession in Video Message

Following the murder, Prasad returned to Kuwait and released a video message confessing to the crime. In the video, he claimed that the police had failed to take action on his daughter’s complaint of sexual abuse, prompting him to resort to violence. Police have registered a murder case against Prasad and are actively searching for his arrest.

Anjaneya and his wife, Chandrakala, reside in Kuwait, while their 12-year-old daughter initially lived with her grandparents. Subsequently, the child moved in with Chandrakala’s sister, Lakshmi, and her husband.During her stay at Lakshmi’s house, the girl was allegedly molested by Lakshmi’s father-in-law. When she reported the incident to her aunt, she was allegedly instructed to remain silent.

Frustration with Police Inaction

Anjaneya and his wife were later informed about the incident and filed a complaint with the local police. However, Anjaneya claimed that instead of taking action against the accused, the police attempted to mediate the issue. The alleged molester was reportedly released with only a warning.

Feeling helpless and frustrated with the lack of justice for his daughter, Anjaneya took matters into his own hands, tragically resulting in the murder of his relative.

</excerpt>

Kuwait has officially endorsed the joint statement released by the Aligned for Advancing Lifesaving and Peace in Sudan (ALPS) Group, which facilitated the latest round of intra-Sudan talks in Geneva. The Kuwaiti Foreign Ministry made the announcement on Saturday.
In a statement reported by the Kuwait News Agency, the Ministry commended the mediation efforts of both regional and international partners involved in the Geneva discussions. It praised the agreement reached to open crossings and secure routes, which is crucial for delivering international humanitarian aid to the Sudanese people.
Kuwait also expressed strong support for the Jeddah Declaration issued in May 2023, emphasizing the importance of adhering to its provisions to further peace and stability in Sudan.
Furthermore, the Ministry reiterated Kuwait’s ongoing commitment to humanitarian assistance, highlighting its air bridge initiative, which has already conducted 24 flights carrying significant amounts of aid to Sudan. This effort underscores Kuwait’s dedication to supporting the Sudanese people during their time of need.
Kuwait’s diplomatic engagement with Sudan and Geneva reflects its broader foreign policy priorities and regional interests. Kuwait and Sudan have maintained a longstanding relationship characterized by cooperation in various sectors, including economic aid, trade, and humanitarian support. Recent developments in Sudan, including political turmoil and conflict, have prompted Kuwait to engage actively in diplomatic efforts to support peace and stability in the region. Kuwait’s support for Sudan often comes through international organizations and cooperative frameworks, emphasizing its role as a stabilizing force in the Arab world. Kuwait’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs regularly issues statements regarding Sudan’s internal issues, advocating for peaceful resolutions and international cooperation.
Geneva, as a major hub for international diplomacy, hosts numerous international organizations, including the United Nations Office at Geneva (UNOG) and various humanitarian agencies. Rai, survived by his wife Sarabjit Kaur, two daughters, and a son, was the main financial support for his family in Kakkon, a suburb where they settled after moving from Salempur village. His sudden demise in the fire, which claimed the lives of 49 individuals, mostly Indian nationals, has left his family in deep shock.

Rai’s son, Arshdeep Singh, a Class 10 student, received the heart-wrenching news from a colleague of his father. Despite initial disbelief, the family later confirmed Rai’s death through a relative in Kuwait. Rai, who had visited his family just last year, was known for providing for his family’s needs without discussing his earnings.

The tragic incident in the Al-Mangaf building has raised questions about living conditions and safety measures for migrant workers in Kuwait. Rai’s daughter, Sumandeep, shared concerns over cramped living conditions in the building, which had reportedly worsened recently due to room partitions.

Amidst their grief, Rai’s family is hopeful for support from both the Indian government and Rai’s employer, NBTC in Kuwait, to assist with their living expenses. Officials from Hoshiarpur administration have assured full assistance to the family, with preparations underway to receive Rai’s body in Delhi.

The mortal remains of the victims, including Rai, are being repatriated to India, with an Indian Air Force flight already landing in Kochi carrying the remains. The tragic incident has underscored the challenges faced by migrant workers abroad and the critical need for ensuring their safety and welfare.

The cremation of Himat Rai is scheduled to take place in Hoshiarpur on Saturday, marking a somber closure to a life dedicated to supporting his loved ones and his community.

The aircraft is expected to arrive in Delhi, as some of the Indians who died are from various northern states, according to sources. Kuwaiti authorities have already performed DNA tests to identify the bodies.

The Kuwaiti Fire Force stated that the deadly fire was caused by an “electrical circuit,” a conclusion reached after examining the scene, as reported by the Kuwaiti news agency KUNA.

Sheikh Fahad Al-Yousuf Al-Sabah, the First Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Interior, and Minister of Defence, announced that authorities have identified 48 bodies, including 45 Indians and three Filipinos, as reported by the English-language daily Arab Times.

</excerpt>

On Wednesday, 40 Indian workers died in their sleep as their cramped house in Kuwait’s Mangaf caught fire. The blaze reportedly started in the kitchen of the seven-story building and killed 49 male workers residing there. As the news broke out, the Indian government took swift action, sending Minister of State for Foreign Ministry Kirti Vardhan Singh to meet with the six hospitalized nationals who escaped the situation. Simultaneously, the government of Kerala, from where at least 24 of the victims hailed, announced Rs 5 lakh compensation for each of the deceased families.

However, this incident has raised questions about the living conditions of Indian workers in Kuwait and other Middle Eastern countries.

Over 6,500 workers died in Qatar

According to research by The Guardian, more than 6,500 migrant workers from Southeast Asian countries—India, Pakistan, Nepal, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka—lost their lives in Qatar in the decade ending in 2022. The total death toll is significantly higher, as these figures do not include deaths from several countries that send large numbers of workers to Qatar, including the Philippines and Kenya.

Meanwhile, a separate report stated that the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries experienced the highest number of migrant worker deaths in Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) during the pandemic years (2019-2021). According to The Hindu, in 2020 alone, 3,753 Indian labourers died in Saudi Arabia. This number dropped to 2,328 in subsequent years.

Since 2016, the six GCC countries (Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and UAE) have reported the deaths of more than 33,000 Indian workers.

But why the Middle East?

Emigration from India to the GCC states (Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates) is not a new phenomenon. It has increased remarkably since the 1970s due to the oil boom in the region. The presence of Indian labourers in the Middle East dates back to 1935 when BAPCO (Bahrain Petroleum Company) imported labour from India. While there are often reports of exploitation of Indians in these countries, labourers are largely driven by the success stories of their neighbours who have worked there.

Swift Response and Harrowing Escapes

The fire broke out on Tuesday, and despite a quick response from local authorities, many residents died in their sleep or resorted to desperate measures, such as jumping from the first floor, to escape the blaze. A senior Kuwaiti journalist told CNN-News18 that the intense heatwave, with temperatures exceeding 50 degrees Celsius, likely contributed to the tragedy, prompting regular government warnings.

</excerpt>

Eight expats in Kuwait received definitive prison terms after being found guilty in a corruption case related to unlawfully granting driving permits to expatriates in the nation.

The Court of Cassation in Kuwait sentenced each of the eight individuals to four years of imprisonment and mandated their deportation upon completion of their sentences. A police officer holding the rank of colonel was also subjected to a comparable judgment in connection with the same case.

Here’s an explanation of the case and its implications:

Bribery and Illegal Issuance of Driving Licenses

The Court of Cassation in Kuwait handed down final jail sentences to eight expatriates, each receiving four years in prison, for their involvement in a bribery case related to illegally issuing driving licenses for foreigners. Additionally, a police officer with the rank of colonel was also sentenced to four years in prison and deportation after serving the term. The officer, an employee at the Ministry of Interior, faced charges of bribery, misappropriation of public funds, and violating job duties in exchange for issuing driving licenses to ineligible expatriates.

Judicial Process and Earlier Sentencing

Previously, a lower court had issued a sentence of eight years in prison for the police officer and varying jail terms ranging from six to four years for the eight expatriates involved in the case. The final ruling from the Court of Cassation confirms these penalties, emphasizing the seriousness of the offenses and the legal consequences for those involved in corrupt practices related to public services.

Kuwait’s Population and Driving License System

Kuwait has a diverse population of around 4.8 million people, including approximately 3.2 million foreigners. In recent years, Kuwait has implemented electronic systems for various services, including driving licenses. Expatriates can now renew their licenses electronically through the Ministry of Interior’s website or the “Sahel” government app, streamlining the process and enhancing efficiency.

Reforms in Driving License Issuance

In late 2021, Kuwait introduced a new system for issuing driving licenses to expatriates. The system includes a review of holders’ data to ensure eligibility criteria are met, such as qualifications and income levels. The aim is to prevent the issuance of licenses to ineligible individuals and to uphold the standards for safe and responsible driving practices among foreign residents in Kuwait.

The Indian community in Kuwait is the largest expatriate group with almost a million members, and it is well-known among other expatriate communities, according to the Indian Embassy. Engineers, physicians, chartered accountants, scientists, software specialists, management consultants, architects, technicians, nurses, retail traders, and businesspeople are among the professions who call Kuwait home.

The Indian Business Community in Kuwait has established a significant presence in the local market, particularly in retail and distributorship sectors. The longstanding friendly relations between India and Kuwait, deeply rooted in history, have endured over time, as stated by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA). India has historically been a key trading partner of Kuwait, with the Indian rupee serving as the legal tender until 1961. The year 2021-22 marked the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two nations.

On April 17, the Indian Ambassador to Kuwait, Adarsh Swaika, met with Kuwait’s Deputy Prime Minister, Sheikh Fahad Yousef Saud Al-Sabah, acknowledging and appreciating the expatriate-friendly measures implemented during his tenure.
Earlier this week, the Indian envoy to the Gulf nation praised Kuwait’s vital involvement in several regional crises, saying Kuwait has adopted a policy of neutrality in the area and has played an essential role in matters involving Gulf Cooperation Council members.

It is implementing a number of social and economic development projects in many developing countries, particularly through the Kuwait Fund for Arab Economic Development, and is at the forefront of countries in providing humanitarian aid all over the world, which the international community greatly appreciates. In its article, Al-Qabas Daily quoted the Indian envoy as stating.

The ambassador said in his statement, “We look forward to high-level visits from both sides to strengthen these historical relations between our two countries due to their importance in providing an opportunity to reach mutual understandings and agreements on important issues.”

He stated that the date and location of the joint committee meeting between the two countries have not yet been determined because it will depend on the arrival of any of the two countries’ foreign ministers, according to Al-Qabas Daily.

On the corporation between the two countries on the security front, the Indian envoy said, “The defence and security relations have so far been limited to training and medical cooperation. Four Indian ships visited Kuwait in July and October of last year. An Indian warship (ANS Visakhapatnam guided missile destroyer) is expected to visit Kuwait in August.”

“Commercially, there is growth in economic and trade cooperation between the two countries. Our bilateral trade amounting to USD 13.8 billion for the period 2022-2023 recorded its highest levels ever, with an increase of 12.8 per cent on an annual basis. The main potential area of cooperation is in the field of Kuwaiti investments in India, which provides an attractive investment and financial climate,” he added further.
