Their relatives are here. The administration is with the families of the deceased…”

The fire, which occurred at a labor accommodation in Mangaf, Kuwait, on June 12, claimed the lives of three people from Uttar Pradesh, among a total of 45 Indians. The victims from Gorakhpur were identified as Angad Gupta (48) and Jairam Gupta (38). Both had been working in the Gulf country for nearly a decade and had recently returned to work after spending time with their families.

Angad Gupta’s wife, Reeta Devi, spoke to ANI, saying, “Angad was staying in Kuwait for the last eight years and used to visit India from time to time. He was working in a mall.” Angad, the family’s sole breadwinner, is survived by his wife and their two children, including his daughter Anshika.

Additionally, the final rites of Sivashankar Govindhan, one of the seven people from Tamil Nadu killed in the Kuwait fire, were performed today at the Royapuram crematorium in Chennai. </excerpt>

Himat Rai, 62, who had been supporting his family as a foreman in Kuwait for three decades, tragically lost his life in a devastating fire in Mangaf, Kuwait. Rai, survived by his wife Sarabjit Kaur, two daughters, and a son, was the main financial support for his family in Kakkon, a suburb where they settled after moving from Salempur village. His sudden demise in the fire, which claimed the lives of 49 individuals, mostly Indian nationals, has left his family in deep shock.

Rai’s son, Arshdeep Singh, a Class 10 student, received the heart-wrenching news from a colleague of his father. Despite initial disbelief, the family later confirmed Rai’s death through a relative in Kuwait. Rai, who had visited his family just last year, was known for providing for his family’s needs without discussing his earnings.

The tragic incident in the Al-Mangaf building has raised questions about living conditions and safety measures for migrant workers in Kuwait. Rai’s daughter, Sumandeep, shared concerns over cramped living conditions in the building, which had reportedly worsened recently due to room partitions.

Amidst their grief, Rai’s family is hopeful for support from both the Indian government and Rai’s employer, NBTC in Kuwait, to assist with their living expenses. Officials from Hoshiarpur administration have assured full assistance to the family, with preparations underway to receive Rai’s body in Delhi.

The mortal remains of the victims, including Rai, are being repatriated to India, with an Indian Air Force flight already landing in Kochi carrying the remains. The tragic incident has underscored the challenges faced by migrant workers abroad and the critical need for ensuring their safety and welfare.

The cremation of Himat Rai is scheduled to take place in Hoshiarpur on Saturday, marking a somber closure to a life dedicated to supporting his loved ones and his community.

</excerpt>

When Nalinakshan, an expatriate from Kasargod district in northern Kerala, visited his family for the Kaliyattam festival in March, he never imagined he would narrowly escape death just a few months later.

“It was only when I was on the brink of being engulfed by flames that I recalled the water tank below. I realised it was close enough to jump to. Without a second thought, I leapt towards it,” said Nalinakshan, who has been living in Kuwait for over a decade, after saving himself from the fire by jumping into a water tank, according to Onmanorama.

The Kuwait fire, which broke out on Wednesday, claimed the lives of around 40 Indians, including 24 Malayalis, as reported by NORKA Roots. Nalinakshan’s escape offers a small relief amidst the tragedy, according to PTI.

He was trapped on the third floor of the residential building in Mangaf, Ahmadi Governorate, where the fire erupted. The blaze started in the kitchen around 4 am while most of the 195 migrant workers were asleep, PTI reported.

“We received the shocking news around 11 am on Wednesday. He had jumped onto the water tank but couldn’t move. Our relatives found him there and immediately took him to the hospital,” Nalinakshan’s uncle Balakrishnan told a news channel, according to PTI.

Nalinakshan sustained injuries to his mouth. “We haven’t been able to speak much with Nalinakshan because of the injuries. His surgery will be performed, and we are slightly relieved because he is being treated at a good hospital there,” Balakrishnan added, according to PTI.

“The impact caused a significant injury to my lower body, and I lost consciousness before reaching the hospital,” Nalinakshan told Manorama News.

So far, the Kuwait fire tragedy has claimed the lives of 49 foreign workers, PTI reported.

In a devastating fire tragedy in Kuwait, the number of Keralites who lost their lives has increased to 24. The Department of Non-Resident Keralites’ Affairs (NORKA) confirmed on Thursday that the bodies of the deceased will be repatriated to Kerala by tonight. The post-mortem examinations of the identified bodies have been completed.

Ajith Kolasseri, the acting Chief Executive Officer of NORKA Roots, provided an update on the tragedy. He stated that the death toll among Keralites, initially reported as 12 in the morning and later revised to 19, has now reached 24 based on information from NORKA’s help desk in Kuwait.

Seven Keralites who sustained serious injuries are receiving treatment in the Intensive Care Units (ICUs) of various hospitals in Kuwait. Kolasseri noted that many of the injured have been discharged from hospitals, but the identities and details of the deceased will only be confirmed after verification by the External Affairs Ministry.

NORKA’s help desk is working closely with the Indian Embassy and the mortuary departments of Kuwaiti hospitals to expedite the paperwork for repatriation. This coordinated effort aims to ensure that the bodies of the victims are returned to their families in Kerala promptly.

The fire, which occurred in a seven-storey building in Mangaf, Ahmadi Governorate, Kuwait, resulted in the deaths of 49 foreign workers, including 42 Indians, and left 50 others injured. The blaze erupted around 4 am on Wednesday, originating in the kitchen while most of the 195 migrant workers were asleep. Thick black smoke from the fire caused many victims to suffocate, according to officials from the Kuwait Interior Ministry and the fire department.

In response to the tragedy, the Kuwaiti government has offered to airlift the mortal remains to India. The Interior Minister of Kuwait announced that the Emir of Kuwait has instructed arrangements for one or two planes to transport the bodies back home.

Established in 1996 by the state government, NORKA aims to address the grievances of non-resident Keralites both in India and abroad, fostering a sustainable partnership with the diaspora. The organization is playing a crucial role in coordinating the repatriation efforts and supporting the affected families during this difficult time.

</excerpt>

On Wednesday, 40 Indian workers died in their sleep as their cramped house in Kuwait’s Mangaf caught fire. The blaze reportedly started in the kitchen of the seven-story building and killed 49 male workers residing there. As the news broke out, the Indian government took swift action, sending Minister of State for Foreign Ministry Kirti Vardhan Singh to meet with the six hospitalized nationals who escaped the situation. Simultaneously, the government of Kerala, from where at least 24 of the victims hailed, announced Rs 5 lakh compensation for each of the deceased families.

However, this incident has raised questions about the living conditions of Indian workers in Kuwait and other Middle Eastern countries.

Over 6,500 workers died in Qatar

According to research by The Guardian, more than 6,500 migrant workers from Southeast Asian countries—India, Pakistan, Nepal, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka—lost their lives in Qatar in the decade ending in 2022. The total death toll is significantly higher, as these figures do not include deaths from several countries that send large numbers of workers to Qatar, including the Philippines and Kenya.

Meanwhile, a separate report stated that the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries experienced the highest number of migrant worker deaths in Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) during the pandemic years (2019-2021). According to The Hindu, in 2020 alone, 3,753 Indian labourers died in Saudi Arabia. This number dropped to 2,328 in subsequent years.

Since 2016, the six GCC countries (Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and UAE) have reported the deaths of more than 33,000 Indian workers.

But why the Middle East?

Emigration from India to the GCC states (Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates) is not a new phenomenon. It has increased remarkably since the 1970s due to the oil boom in the region. The presence of Indian labourers in the Middle East dates back to 1935 when BAPCO (Bahrain Petroleum Company) imported labour from India. While there are often reports of exploitation of Indians in these countries, labourers are largely driven by the success stories of their neighbours who have worked there.
