In 2023, Kusha Kapila revealed that she was getting a divorce from her ex-husband, Zorawar Ahluwalia, and had to endure malicious gossip. She was heavily bashed by her fans and even family members; some called her a “cheater” and a “gold-digger.

In a conversation, the influencer got emotional and said, “The things that have happened to me in the last two years have made me very strong.” Her mother, Rita, said, “It was tough, but it’s okay. People will say what they want, we shouldn’t care. After a while, everyone forgot about it. Now, no one talks, everyone respects the work. There are no bad rumours now; it’s only about how much you are growing and doing good work.”

Her mother continued, saying, “In order to avoid being noticed or asked questions, I started going to the temple a little earlier than normal after this occurrence. Then, your father once said, Why are you scared? No one will ask anything.’ However, one aunty asked something related to this at the temple one day. I was a little shaky during my way home and started crying.” She also told how Kusha’s father reassured her that such obstacles are a normal part of life and should not have a lasting impact on her. He even talked with their relatives to ensure that no one bothered her about it.

Kusha Kapila recently shared her experiences following the announcement of her divorce from Zorawar Singh Ahluwalia. She revealed that she isolated herself from external opinions during this period, but her mother had to deal with the public’s judgments. Kapila noted that her mother faced various conversations about the divorce within her own social circles.

In an interview with Fever FM, Kapila discussed the societal challenges women face during difficult times. She remarked, “Unkinder to women, that society is anyway so I think that is something my mother had to go through. I completely shut myself to opinions or anything. I didn’t have the bandwidth for it. So I am sure my mother can speak very clearly about it.

“She had to speak to relatives and speak to society. She has her own life — she goes to the temple or to the park, she has her own social communities where she had to face opinions and that is how the world works. This is the reality, this is the truth of where we live in and the times we live in. As much progress is happening and we hope for it to happen, somethings pretty much remain the same,” she added.

Kapila also acknowledged that she cannot control how the internet reacts to her life. “The other aspect of it is that, you can’t pick and choose what is going to happen to you online, especially if you have opened up your world and life to a lot of people. You can alter how you share your life now, going forward, realising the consequences of sharing your private life with people but I don’t think you get to pick and choose. It is unkind, it is unfair, that is there, assumptions will be made, people will speak on behalf of you and then you are like, ‘What do I give explanation for? These are a range of topics.’” she explained.

She concluded, “So at some point, you have to pull back. You should realise that people around you should know your truth. The people you truly care for, the people who will be standing with you during your good times, your celebrations, your wins and losses, and hopefully down the line, who will be around your death bed, those are the people you care about.”

Earlier this year, Kusha Kapila disclosed that she was apprehensive about announcing her divorce after receiving a threatening call from a media outlet that intended to publicize the news. This urgency led her to go public sooner than she had planned. During this challenging time, her father and ex-husband Zorawar supported her.
