17-Year-Old NEET Aspirant Dies by Suicide in Kota a Day Before Exam

May 4, 2025, 12:59 pm

A 17-year-old female student who was getting ready to take the NEET-UG exam took her own life in Kota on Saturday evening, a day prior to the national-level medical course entrance test, police officials said.

Hailing from Sheopur in Madhya Pradesh, the student had been staying in Kota with her parents and younger brother for some years. She was studying at one of the city’s premier coaching institutes and was going to take the NEET exam on Sunday.

The incident took place around 10 pm when she was studying in the second floor of their residence. Her relatives were downstairs then. “Around 10 pm, her father went upstairs to check on her and found her hanging. She was rushed to a hospital where she was declared dead,” station house officer Arvind Bharadwaj of Kunadi police station informed.

“Victim was also very much prepared for NEET at the city’s leading coaching center. She was also very much ready to write the exam on Sunday,” added Bharadwaj. No suicide note was recovered from the spot. She was sent for post-mortem examination in the late hours that night.

With this incident, the total number of student suicides in Rajasthan this year has risen to 16 — 15 of them in Kota and one in Jodhpur, according to police records. In 2023, the state had 23 such incidents, 20 of them in Kota. In 2022, 15 suicides were reported from the city. The numbers were 18 in 2019, 20 in 2018, seven in 2017, 17 in 2016, and 18 in 2015. Worth mentioning is that in 2020 and 2021, no such incidents occurred when coaching centres were closed or carried out online because of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Kota has always been India’s coaching hub, with an estimated ₹10,000 crore worth of test-prep industry each year. Students from all over the country converge in the city after finishing Class 10 to join intense coaching courses to prepare them for competitive exams such as NEET and JEE. The majority also join associated schools, mostly for certification purposes, while academic concentration is in the coaching institutions.

Yet, the pressure-cooker atmosphere and college requirements are taking toll on a large majority of students, particularly those staying away from home. The city’s increasing suicide rates are continuously raising eyebrows about the mental health issues of young ambitions.

Kota administration takes initiative to boost coaching, tourism in city

December 27, 2024, 3:29 am

District Collector Dr. Ravindra Goswami, is taking proactive steps to increase the number of coaching students and revitalize tourism in the city.

In a bid to restore Kota’s position as a hub for educational coaching, Dr. Goswami has written a letter to parents, assuring them that the city is dedicated to taking care of students, treating them as their own children. Over the past year, several schemes and events have been introduced to support students’ well-being and encourage their academic growth.

The decline in the number of coaching students has resulted in economic struggles, particularly for local businesses that cater to students, such as hostels, tea stalls, and transport services. This decline has been partly due to the rise in student suicides, which has led some parents and students to seek alternatives to Kota’s coaching institutes. The impact has also been felt in areas like Coral Park, where many large hostels remain empty.

In response, local leaders, businesses, and the administration have launched efforts to promote tourism alongside coaching. The successful Kota Mahotsav, organized by Dr. Goswami in collaboration with various local organizations, drew thousands of visitors, showcasing Kota’s tourism potential.

Attractions like the Chambal River Front, Garh Palace, and Mukundra Hill Tiger Reserve were highlighted during the event, with extensive social media coverage boosting the city’s image both locally and globally.

Dr. Goswami has made a personal effort to engage with students through programs like Dinner with Collector and Samvad, building positive connections and awareness about Kota’s commitment to student development. The administration is focused on dispelling misconceptions surrounding the coaching industry and ensuring a supportive environment for students.

With a renewed focus on education, tourism, and student welfare, the city hopes to regain its reputation as a prime educational destination.

Bombay CEO Compares Bengaluru To Kota, Sparks Debate Online

August 28, 2024, 2:39 pm

Social media is abuzz with debates comparing Delhi, Mumbai, and Bengaluru. Recently, Shantanu Deshpande, CEO of Bombay Shaving Company, sparked a lively discussion with a post on X, drawing a parallel between Bengaluru and Kota. Deshpande remarked, “Bangalore today reminds me of Kota in 2005,” highlighting his observation that Bengaluru’s current startup culture resembles Kota’s educational environment where only a few succeed despite widespread ambition.

Deshpande elaborated that Kota, known as a hub for IIT-JEE preparation, offers an ideal environment with top-notch resources. However, out of 40,000 students, only about 1,000 typically succeed in clearing the exams. “The other 30-35k just assumed that being in Kota meant JEE rank was done. They believed that sitting in the same classes, eating at the same mess, owning the same books as the top guys was enough. So padhai kam, baatein zyada (less studies, more talks),” he wrote.

He argued that Bengaluru faces a similar “all talk” syndrome, where many founders believe that mere presence in the startup ecosystem or having connections with venture capitalists guarantees success. “The bulk reminds me of the ‘all talk’ gangs of Kota. And that never ended well,” he said. He observed that, like Kota’s students, Bengaluru’s startup enthusiasts often mistake networking and superficial engagement for genuine progress.

Deshpande advised founders to concentrate on their business rather than getting caught up in the city’s startup hype. He warned that the current “ecosystem delusion” creates a false sense of accomplishment and entitlement. “All these founders who find their way to Bangalore with a hope to build are needed to be protected and supported. But this strange environment creates an unhealthy belief of ‘arriving before the fact’,” he wrote. He encouraged entrepreneurs to focus on their work and seek mentors beyond the city’s confines.

Deshpande’s post has garnered significant attention, with over 4,000 reactions and nearly 300 comments since its publication. Respondents included individuals from Kota and Bengaluru, who shared their own perspectives on the comparison. One user noted, “I am from Kota. Living in Kota. Have lived in Mumbai & Bangalore extensively. I agree with what you said. Except that, in my experience – those single-digit ranks, those unicorns, and the concentration of high-performing entities is due to the power of the ecosystem.”

Another commented, “Your post applies to literally everything: people trying to make it in Hollywood, people in Silicon Valley, athletes in college trying to make it to the major leagues, etc. Respectfully, your post doesn’t say much.”

A third user remarked, “Focus on business >> networking for sure. But doesn’t your circle help? Decluttering is important, but I would love to shift to Bangalore only for that extra external motivation.”

Jawahar Nagar Station House Officer (SHO) Harinarayan Sharma stated that they are yet to confirm if the student died by suicide. The police reported that the student returned to his room after dinner on Saturday night. When he was absent from his scheduled activities the next morning and did not respond to knocks on his door, hostel authorities broke in and found him lying dead on his bed.

Details and Investigation

The student, originally from Bihar, had been staying in Kota for the past year to prepare for NEET. Following the discovery, hostel authorities contacted the police, who took the boy to the hospital, where doctors declared him brought dead. The body has been sent for an autopsy.

SHO Sharma mentioned that no suicide note was found among the student’s belongings. “No behavioral changes were reported by anyone in the last few days. We are probing whether he attempted the last NEET test. His family has been informed,” he said.

Ongoing Concerns in Kota

This incident marks the 13th reported death of a student preparing for NEET or the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) in Kota this year. Last year, 27 students allegedly died by suicide in the state while preparing for various competitive exams.

Kota is a major hub for India’s test-prep industry, which is estimated to be worth Rs. 10,000 crore annually. Students from across the country flock to Kota after completing Class X to enroll in residential test-prep institutes. They also register in schools primarily for certification purposes, attending classes mainly at test-prep centers focused on preparing them for Class XII exams and entrance tests like NEET and JEE.

August 1, 2024, 2:08 pm

Heavy rainfall across various cities in Rajasthan has severely disrupted normal life, leading to extensive waterlogging and traffic jams in Jaipur, Churu, and Kota, according to officials.

Four Missing in Jaipur Flooding Incident

“Around 13 people were trapped in the basement, which was filled with about 12 feet of water. An SDRF team promptly arrived and rescued nine people, while others remain missing,” stated Chomu town’s Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Ashok Chauhan.

In another incident in the Bagru area, the SDRF is searching for a minor boy who was swept away by an overflowing drain, an official reported.

Jaipur Airport and Key Roads Flooded

The entrance to Jaipur airport was waterlogged, and major roads such as Sikar and Ajmer Road experienced significant traffic disruptions. A few schools in Jaipur were also closed due to the heavy rains.

Kota Tragedy: Teen Student Found Dead, Suicide Feared

July 4, 2024, 1:12 pm

A tragic incident has shaken Rajasthan’s coaching hub of Kota, where a 16-year-old student from Bihar’s Nalanda, preparing for the Joint Entrance Examination (NEET) for engineering courses, was found dead in his paying guest accommodation. According to local police officer Mahendra Maroo, the student was discovered hanging from the ceiling fan after friends, concerned by his lack of response, alerted authorities and his younger brother, also preparing for NEET in Kota but residing separately.

The deceased had been studying at a Kota coaching center for about a year. Police broke open his door when attempts to contact him went unanswered. No suicide note was found, and the body was sent for autopsy while parents were notified. Police intend to inquire about any recent behavioral changes from family members.

This incident adds to a concerning trend in Kota, known as India’s test-preparation capital with a lucrative ₹10,000 crore industry annually. The city draws students from across the country post-Class X for intensive coaching and school education, primarily for certification.

Suicides among students in Kota have been a recurring issue, with 12 reported this year alone, including three in the past month. Last year, 27 students took their lives, and in previous years, numbers ranged similarly high. The COVID-19 pandemic-related closures in 2020 and 2021 saw no suicides as coaching moved online or ceased.

In response to the alarming suicide rates, authorities mandated safety measures such as spring-loaded fans in hostels and increased mental health support for students. Last September, the Rajasthan government introduced additional initiatives aimed at preventing student suicides amidst the pressure-cooker environment of exam preparation.

This tragedy underscores ongoing concerns about the mental well-being of students in high-pressure academic settings and raises calls for sustained efforts to support their emotional health alongside academic pursuits.

The incident took place in Jorawarpura village on Wednesday evening, and the police identified the deceased girl as Gorvika Nagar.

When her parents realized she was inside the car after she had been locked inside for about two hours, she had passed away. According to the authorities, the family of Gorvika rejected both an autopsy and any police investigation into the occurrence.

The victim’s father, Pradeep Nagar, along with his wife and two daughters, went to Jorawarpura village in Kota to attend a wedding function.

After reaching the venue, Gorvika’s mother and elder sister got out of the car, and her father went to park it. Pradeep Nagar thought Gorvika had left with his wife and elder daughter, so he locked the car after parking it. Meanwhile, Gorvika’s mother thought she was coming with her father.

The family was unaware that the child had stayed in the car during the wedding reception. Her father believed she was with her mother, while her mother believed she was with her father, according to a PTI report citing Khatoli police station SHO Banna Lal.

Finally, after two hours of mingling with different groups during the ceremony, they realised the child was with neither of them and rushed to the parking lot to check on Gorvika.

They found her lying unconscious in the back seat of the car and took her to the nearest hospital, where doctors declared her brought dead.

Last Month, a seven-year-old boy and his five-year-old sister perished in Mumbai from asphyxia after being left inside an abandoned automobile.

According to police, on April 24, around 1:30 p.m., Sajid Mohammad Shaikh and his sister Muskan Shaikh walked outdoors to play near their one-room home in CGS Colony, Sector 5, Sion Koliwada.

They probably wanted to escape the heat, so they got into an abandoned automobile that was parked a hundred meters from their house. They were confined within.

Father is demanded ₹30 lakh ransom for his daughter, who pretends to be kidnapped

March 21, 2024, 12:00 pm

The father of a 21-year-old woman from Madhya Pradesh informed the police that his daughter had been abducted and that he had received a ransom demand of ₹30 lakh.

According to his police complaint, he received images of his daughter with her hands and feet bound. He mentioned that his daughter was attending a coaching institute in Kota, Rajasthan.

However, the Kota police revealed that the preliminary investigation suggests no crime was perpetrated against her and that the kidnapping claim was fabricated.

Kota Superintendent of Police Amrita Duhan stated, “In the investigation so far, evidence shows that no crime has been committed against the girl and no kidnapping has taken place. From the evidence found so far, the incident appears to be false.”

Upon receiving the complaint from the girl’s father in Shivpuri, Madhya Pradesh, teams were formed to investigate the matter.

During the investigation, it was discovered that she was residing with two friends in Indore, approximately 400 kilometers away from her parents’ residence.

One of the friends disclosed to the police that the girl and her companion desired to pursue studies abroad and sought financial assistance for this purpose.

The police failed to trace her whereabouts in Kota for the past 6-7 months, and she had not enrolled in any coaching institute or hostel in the city.

According to the police, the girl’s mother had enrolled her in a coaching institute on August 3, where she stayed until August 5 before returning to Indore, Madhya Pradesh.

To maintain the illusion of attending the institute, the girl sent messages regarding her test performances from a different phone number.

Subsequently, she orchestrated her own abduction. With the help of her friend, she staged photos of herself with bound hands and feet in their Indore apartment, which were then sent to her father along with the ransom demand of ₹30 lakh.

“I urge her to return home and seek assistance from the nearest police station,” Ms. Duhan appealed.

16-year-old NEET aspirant hangs self in Kota

September 13, 2023, 12:22 pm

An official from the neighboring Vigyan Nagar police station said on Wednesday that a medical aspirant preparing for the NEET (National Eligibility and Entrance Test) hanged herself.

The crime occurred on Tuesday night, according to Devesh Bhardwaj, an officer from the Vigyan Nagar police station, and the victim was named as 16-year-old Richa Singh. She was preparing for the all-India medical entrance exam at a hostel at the Electronic Complex in Kota, the officer said, adding that she was from Ranchi, Jharkhand.

Previously, in August, Rajasthan Minister Pratap Singh Khachariyawas expressed worry over increased suicide rates among students at Kota coaching facilities, claiming that the tutorials are operated solely for profit.

Khachariyawas referred to these coaching centers as “Mafia,” and urged the Congress government to take strong action against them.

In a similar scenario, a 16-year-old student studying for the NEET for admission to undergraduate medical courses allegedly committed suicide on August 27 at his coaching institute in Kota, according to authorities. Avishkar from Maharashtra, the dead, jumped to his death from the sixth storey of the building housing the coaching center.

Kota: IIT-JEE aspirant dies by suicide 4th such case in this month

August 16, 2023, 6:54 pm

An 18-year-old student studying for the Indian Institute of Technology-Joint Entrance Examination (IIT-JEE) at a coaching institution in Rajasthan’s Kota allegedly committed suicide in his PG room on Tuesday night. This is the fourth alleged suicide attempt by a coaching student in Kota this month, and the 21st such attempt this year.

The kid, who was from Bihar’s Gaya district, had been studying for the IIT-JEE entrance exam at a coaching institute in Kota and was staying in a PG room in the Mahaveer Nagar area, according to police.

The event was discovered at 8 p.m. on Tuesday, and the body was collected from the room and sent to the New Medical College Hospital (NMCH) mortuary for a post-mortem, according to media.

Kota: 2 NEET aspirants allegedly die by suicide

June 28, 2023, 1:35 pm

A 17-year-old Uttar Pradesh student was discovered dead at a rented accommodation in Kota late on Tuesday, hours after another student was suspected of committing suicide, bringing the total number of such cases in Rajasthan’s coaching hub to four this month.

According to police, the student from Uttar Pradesh arrived in Kota a month ago to prepare for the all-India pre-medical entrance exam. When a housekeeper went to serve the teenager dinner, he discovered his body. So far this year, fifteen students have committed suicide in Kota. In Kota in 2022, the same number of students died.

According to Debasish Bharadwaj, a local police officer, they did not find any notes in the first case but did find one in the second. “The bodies were autopsied… Nobody reported any changes in their behavior in the last few days. The investigation is currently underway.”

In Kota, it is estimated that 225000 students are preparing for medical and engineering entrance exams. Some people find the grind stressful, primarily because they are separated from their families.

A spike in suicides has prompted the state government to consider enacting legislation to regulate private educational institutes in order to alleviate academic pressure on students, particularly those enrolled in coaching centers.

To address the issue, the Rajasthan Police established a cell for regular interactions with students at coaching centers on June 22.

According to the state home department, 52 students committed suicide between 2019 and 2022, citing “lack of confidence in students if they score fewer marks” as one of the causes.

Following the deaths of 17 students in 2016, the Kota administration made the appointment of counsellors, weekly offs, recreation days, and rescheduled test schedules mandatory in 2017.
