</excerpt>

KOLKATA: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, on June 26, launched a scathing attack on the Election Commission (EC), alleging that its new guidelines for electoral roll verification amounted to a covert implementation of the National Register of Citizens (NRC), with her state as the primary target. She claimed the electoral body was acting as a “stooge of the BJP.”
Speaking from Digha in Purba Medinipur, where she was overseeing preparations for the Rath Yatra of Lord Jagannath, Banerjee said she had received two lengthy letters from the EC, each spanning 25–30 pages.
Although she had not examined them fully, she said a cursory glance revealed that the Commission was now demanding a declaration form — Annexure D — from voters born between July 1, 1987, and December 2, 2004. This form, she alleged, requires submission of both parents’ birth certificates as proof of citizenship.
Calling the move a “scam,” Banerjee questioned the logic behind targeting those born within this specific window.
“What is the rationale behind selecting these dates? Why isolate voters born after 1987? This is more dangerous than the NRC and must be resisted by all opposition parties,” she declared.
According to EC sources, the new guidelines are part of a special intensive revision of electoral rolls, set to begin in Bihar ahead of Assembly elections later this year. Under the new rules, voters registered before 2003 will not be required to furnish additional documents. However, those registered after 2003 must submit proof of identity and citizenship. The process includes door-to-door verification across the country, and in some states, the 2004 roll will serve as the baseline.
Banerjee expressed concern that the rollout in Bihar — where elections are imminent and the BJP is in power — is a diversionary tactic.
“They will not touch Bihar. The real target is Bengal, which heads to polls next year,” she said.
“This exercise is meant to disenfranchise young and vulnerable voters — particularly migrant workers, students, villagers, and the uneducated — who may struggle to procure their parents’ documents.”
She alleged that valid voters’ names were being arbitrarily deleted at the behest of the BJP.
“The names get cancelled at the last moment on the BJP’s instructions,” she claimed.
“The EC is helping them (BJP) capture Bengal using agencies and manipulation.”
Banerjee voiced deep suspicion over the EC’s impartiality, accusing it of functioning as an extension of the Union Home Ministry. She directly targeted Home Minister Amit Shah, saying,
“Modiji is the Prime Minister. I respect the chair. But Amit Shah is running the country. The current Chief Election Commissioner was his Secretary in the Cooperation Ministry.”
Sending a strong message to political opponents and civil society, Banerjee said the TMC would be the first line of resistance against what she described as “Emergency weapons being handed to the BJP.” She urged all opposition parties to unite and reject the guidelines.
“The EC cannot act unilaterally. We live in a federal democracy. Political parties and elected governments are not bonded labourers. The EC must consult all recognised parties before implementing such sweeping changes,” she asserted.
The West Bengal Chief Minister also questioned the long-term intent behind the voter documentation drive.
“How will poor people produce their parents’ birth certificates? This is a backdoor NRC. Let the Commission come clean on its intention,” she said.
“Even in Assam, the NRC took six years and is still not accepted as a final list.”
She cited past incidents to underscore her mistrust. In February this year, she had flagged cases of duplicate voter identity cards in Bengal matching those from states like Rajasthan and Haryana. The party raised the issue with the EC, which later admitted to flaws in the electoral rolls.
“Now they ask us to provide details of booth-level workers. Why should I reveal their identities to the Commission?” she asked.
Critics across the political spectrum are beginning to echo her concerns. CPI (ML) Liberation general secretary Dipankar Bhattacharya wrote to Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh
Kumar, warning that the current revision exercise mirrors the scale and nature of the Assam NRC, which failed to conclusively resolve citizenship disputes.
Banerjee also raised alarm over the potential detention of voters who may fail to meet the documentation criteria.
“Those who are studying or working outside must ensure their names remain on the rolls till the day of polling. I’ve been told that 100 migrant workers from Bengal have been detained in Odisha’s Cuttack. Some are held in Balasore police station. Why are these incidents happening every day?” she asked.
Urging voters to remain vigilant, Banerjee warned that disenfranchising citizens under the pretext of document verification would eventually “backfire on the BJP.” She concluded with a message of defiance, “We are not opposed to a fair revision of the voter list. But we will not allow the disenfranchisement of genuine voters through such dubious methods.”

PETA, celebrities like Pooja Bhatt, and citizens demand an end to cruel horse-drawn carriages and immediate intervention.
</excerpt>

A disturbing video of a horse collapsing on a busy street in Kolkata has gone viral, triggering widespread outrage and sparking fresh debate about the treatment of working animals in urban India.

The heartbreaking footage shows the frail, emaciated animal collapsing under the scorching heat, visibly exhausted. Instead of offering assistance, the horse’s handler is seen hitting and dragging the animal, prompting anger from citizens and animal rights groups across the country.

The video, originally shared by PETA India, quickly gained traction online. The organisation tagged West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee in a plea to end this cruelty. “Horses who are severely underweight, dehydrated, and in pain are not a tourist attraction,” PETA India posted on X, urging the government to adopt electric carriages as a humane and modern replacement.

Among those who voiced their concern was actor Pooja Bhatt, who condemned the incident in a strong statement. “Heartbreaking. A horse collapses on Kolkata’s streets from heat & exhaustion & is pushed to continue… Beseech you’ll ban these cruel horse-drawn carriages & switch to humane, progressive e-carriages.”

Social media users echoed the sentiment. “This is damn cruel! Are they even feeding the horse?” one user questioned, while another demanded justice: “Such people should be punished without mercy.”

FIR Filed, Horse Under Veterinary Supervision

Reacting to the public uproar, Kolkata Police confirmed legal action against the handler. “Over the incident, Bhowanipore PS has registered the FIR on 24.04.2025… under proper sections of law of BNS & PCA Act on PETA’s complaint,” the department wrote on X.

Authorities have since placed the horse under veterinary care. Officials assured that the animal is receiving proper medical attention. PETA later acknowledged the swift response, stating, “Nobody should have to endure such cruelty!”

This incident has reignited the long-standing demand to ban horse-drawn carriages in Indian cities, especially as rising temperatures make such practices increasingly inhumane. For many, the viral video is not just a one-off case—it’s a wake-up call demanding systemic change.

</excerpt>

Regional Meteorological Centre of Kolkata has already issued a weather warning for West Bengal, predicting heavy thunderstorm and gusty winds till April 15. A cyclonic circulation over Sikkim and Sub-Himalayan West Bengal is responsible for these weather phenomena. Troughs running from Madhya Pradesh to Bangladesh and Assam to the Bay of Bengal are resulting in strong winds and heavy showers.

Thunderstorms in South Bengal, Including Kolkata

South Bengal is placed under a particular thunderstorm alert, which covers Kolkata. The intensity of the storm will be the strongest in West Medinipur, Jhargram, East Medinipur, and Purulia, where windy conditions may touch 40-50 km/h. Thunderstorms would prevail in these districts, and the rains may persist even after Monday, reducing the temperature a little. The effect of storms, however, is expected to ease gradually.

Continued Rain in North Bengal

Isolated rain and thunderstorms will continue in North Bengal’s higher hilly areas until Wednesday. Darjeeling has been put on heavy rain alert. Kalimpong, Alipurduar, and nearby areas will also see thunderstorm with wind speeds of 30-40 km/h. In Malda and North and South Dinajpur districts, winds may rise to 50-60 km/h. The intensity of the storm in North Bengal will decrease after Monday.

Kolkata Weather Forecast

Kolkata witnessed its highest temperature at 34.2°C on Saturday, which was 1.5°C less than the normal. The minimum temperature of 26.4°C was 0.8°C higher than normal. Humidity was between 53% and 88%. There will be a partly cloudy sky in the city over the next 24 hours. The maximum and minimum temperatures will be around 34°C and 25°C, respectively.

Safety Measures for Residents

Residents are advised to remain informed on weather warnings. During thunderstorms, stay inside, avoid using electrical appliances, and stay away from windows. Follow local authorities guidelines for safety.

With weather conditions rapidly changing, staying informed is crucial. Keep an eye on official forecasts for any new updates.

</excerpt>

Following a two-day visit to Farakka, the point from which the Ganga bifurcates and flows into Bangladesh as the Padma river and in West Bengal as the Hooghly, the Bangladesh team of technical experts started a meeting with the Indian counterparts in Kolkata on Thursday.

This is part of the series of interactions between the technical teams of the Joint Rivers Commission of India and Bangladesh on the Ganga Water Treaty, which is due for renewal in 2026, an official said.
As reported earlier, the Bangladeshi delegation of the Joint Rivers Commission reached Kolkata on Monday morning and immediately left for the joint observation site on the Ganges at Farakka.
Members of the commission were in Farakka till March 5.

The Bangladesh delegation visited the Farakka Barrage to assess the flow of Ganges water and its downstream movement into Bangladesh. The timing of this visit is critical because the Ganges river experiences a lean flow of water between January and May.

After the visit, Hossen remarked that the water flow in January was “good” but it “decreased” in February.
He noted that water-sharing is being conducted according to the 1996 treaty between India and Bangladesh.
At Farakka, the two sides reportedly exchanged data about the Ganges water flow over the past five months.
“The meeting between the Indian and Bangladeshi technical teams began this morning. The Bangladesh delegation is led by Muhammad Abul Hossen, a member of the joint rivers commission,” said a senior official.

</excerpt>

A 20-year-old second-year medical student from Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital was allegedly found hanging in her room at the ESI quarters in Kamarhati, as reported by The Times of India. She had been living with her mother, a doctor at the local ESI hospital. According to police sources, the student may have been struggling with depression.

The incident came to light when her mother was unable to reach her despite several attempts. Concerned, the mother went to her daughter’s room in the hospital quarters.

“Despite repeated calls, there was no response from her. Eventually, her mother broke open the door and found her hanging. She was rushed to the hospital, where she was declared dead,” The Times of India quoted a senior police officer of the Barrackpore Commissionerate.

No suicide note was found, the report added.

The medical student was rushed to the hospital immediately but was declared dead, as reported by The Telegraph.

Unnatural death

The deceased’s father, a senior official at a nationalized bank, is stationed in Mumbai, according to the report.

The police have initiated an unnatural death investigation into the incident. The body has been sent for a postmortem at the College of Medicine and Sagore Dutta Hospital. RG Kar Hospital officials mentioned that the student was generally quiet, as per the Times of India report.

RG Kar rape-murder case

The incident comes just days after Sanjay Roy, a convict in the high-profile rape and murder case of a trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, was sentenced to life imprisonment by a Sealdah court in Kolkata.

On January 20, the civil and criminal court in Sealdah found Sanjay Roy, a civic volunteer, guilty and sentenced him to life imprisonment.

The post-graduate trainee doctor was raped and murdered at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 9 last year, sparking nationwide outrage.

The Calcutta High Court had transferred the investigation into the case to the CBI.

However, the doctor’s parents have expressed dissatisfaction, alleging that the investigation was conducted half-heartedly and that other culprits involved in the crime were protected.

Kolkata leads India’s traffic congestion. The city’s growing number of private vehicles worsens the situation, with nearly 2,000 new registrations daily.
</excerpt>

The infamous traffic congestion of Bengaluru still finds itself a topic of discussion. It was ranked the world’s third slowest city for traffic flow, according to the 2024 TomTom Traffic Index report, which measures the conditions of major cities around the globe. This means that, besides Barranquilla and Kolkata, it emerged as the slowest city in the traffic flow rankings.

Bengaluru’s Traffic Times

The TomTom report now indicates that on average, traveling 10 kilometers in Bengaluru takes 30 minutes and 10 seconds. This is 50 seconds faster than in 2023. In Barranquilla, the average for the same distance is 36 minutes and 6 seconds, and in Kolkata, the average is 34 minutes and 33 seconds.

Domestic Traffic Ranking

Domestically, Kolkata is the most congested city followed by Bengaluru. In 2023, for the average coverage of 10 kilometers from 29 minutes and 9 seconds in 2022, Bengaluru took almost 28 minutes and 10 seconds. Bengaluru was India’s slowest average speed at 18 km/h in 2022.

Global Traffic Woes

On a global scale, London remains at the top position in terms of the most congested city with an average speed of 14 km/h. Other cities are Dublin (16 km/h), Milan (17 km/h), Lima (17 km/h), and Toronto (18 km/h) with speeds lower than that of Bengaluru, thus giving an emphasis on the problem globally.

Private vehicles have been adding to Bengaluru’s traffic problems, which had surpassed New Delhi in car ownership a few years ago. Currently, the city has about 2.5 million private cars, with almost 2,000 new vehicle registrations every day, which further puts pressure on the already strained infrastructure of the city.

</excerpt>

In a horrific incident in Kolkata’s posh Tollygunge neighbourhood, a woman in her 30s was brutally murdered by her brother-in-law, Atiur Rahman Laskar, after she rejected his romantic advances. The 35-year-old construction worker allegedly strangled, beheaded, and dismembered the woman before dumping her body parts in various locations.

The discovery of her severed head on Friday morning set off a chain of investigations that led to the uncovering of the rest of her body by the following day.

The Crime Unfolds

The woman, a domestic helper, had been avoiding Laskar for some time after rejecting his repeated proposals. Disturbed by her rejection, Laskar took matters into his own hands. On Thursday evening, after she finished her work, he forcibly took her to an under-construction building. There, he killed her, beheaded her, and dismembered her body into three pieces. He then disposed of the parts in a garbage vat behind a multi-storey building and near a pond.

Investigation and Arrest

The severed head was discovered by locals in the Regent Park area, concealed in a polythene bag. Sniffer dogs and CCTV footage were used by the police to track down the whereabouts of Laskar. Investigators also examined the body parts found in the garbage vat and near the pond. The evidence collected from the scene helped the police trace Laskar back to his village in Basuldanga, Diamond Harbour, where he was arrested.

Details from Police Investigations

Deputy Commissioner of Police Bidisha Kalita confirmed that the woman had blocked Laskar’s phone number and had been avoiding him for some time, fuelling his rage. Authorities also revealed that the initial investigation indicated the crime took place within 12 hours of the head being discovered. Bloodstains and injury marks on the head, as well as forensic evidence from the garbage vat, were critical in solving the case.

A Tragic and Shocking End

The murder has shocked the local community and raised concerns about the prevalence of domestic violence and harassment. Laskar has confessed to the crime, detailing his actions and motives to the authorities. As the investigation continues, questions remain about how the situation escalated to such brutal violence. The woman’s family and those who knew her are left to mourn the tragic loss of a life taken too soon.

Pantha, who has more than 2,500 followers, captioned the post with, “24 hours begging challenge.”

The Experiment

In the video, Pantha addresses the challenge to his audience and proceeds to position himself under a bridge. He is dressed in a torn T-shirt and jeans, holding a bowl. Pantha asks people passing by for money. The video footage captures mixed reactions; while some people stopped to offer money, others ignored him entirely.

The video ends up with a twist as it is seen donating the sum of money raised to an older homeless woman. It gave another meaningful twist to the campaign and, consequently, heated up debate in the streets.

Pantha is famous for his pranks and social experiments, creating over 180 videos. The video has mostly focused on light-hearted challenges and social observations, but this challenge really sparked a debate regarding the ethics of such stunts among his modest followers.

Expressing admiration for SRK, he shared a heartfelt post saying, “Thank you for bringing joy to the City of Joy.” Coincidentally, on the same night in Mumbai, Dua Lipa paid tribute to SRK by blending her song Levitating with Woh Ladki Jo from Baadshah during her performance.

While in Kolkata, Diljit immersed himself in the city’s rich culture, stopping by the historic Indian Coffee House. Originally named Albert Hall, this building, constructed in 1876, carries immense historical significance. First established by Ramkamal Sen, it evolved into a hub for political discourse and anti-British movements. Luminaries such as Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose, Rabindranath Tagore, and Satyajit Ray frequented the venue. After independence, the Coffee House became a symbol of intellectual discussions and remains a cherished spot for history enthusiasts, offering a unique blend of conversation and coffee.

Diljit also visited the Dakshineswar Temple, meditating in its serene surroundings and sharing a video of his peaceful experience with fans. His Kolkata exploration included a leisurely ride in one of the city’s iconic yellow taxis, offering views of the tranquil Hooghly River.

The Dil-Luminati Tour, which previously stopped in Pune, is scheduled to continue on December 6 in Bengaluru, followed by shows in Indore, Chandigarh, and Guwahati. Fans eagerly await more memorable performances as Diljit carries his vibrant energy across India.

</excerpt>

On Friday, Kolkata’s JN Ray Hospital declared it would indefinitely halt admissions of Bangladeshi patients. The move is a protest against reported anti-Hindu violence in Bangladesh and disrespect towards the Indian flag by Bangladeshi nationals. The hospital, located in the Manicktala area, expressed its reasons for the move, citing “insults towards India.” Subhranshu Bhakt, an official at the hospital, explained, “From today, we will not admit any Bangladeshi patient. This is a protest against the atrocities on minorities in Bangladesh and the disrespect shown to our tricolour.” He also urged other hospitals in Kolkata to adopt the same stance.

This move comes in the wake of rising tensions, particularly following the attacks on Hindu temples in Bangladesh’s Chattogram. On Friday, a mob vandalized three temples—Shantaneshwari Matri Temple, Shoni Temple, and Shantaneshwari Kalibari Temple—in the Harish Chandra Munsef Lane area. The assault, which took place around 2:30 pm, involved several hundred people hurling bricks at the temples, according to BDNews24.com. While Kotwali Police Station chief Abdul Karim confirmed minimal damage, he noted that tensions were high. Tapan Das, a temple committee member, shared, “A procession of hundreds arrived after Juma prayers, shouting anti-Hindu and anti-ISKCON slogans. We called the Army when the situation worsened, and order was eventually restored.”

These temple attacks follow the arrest of Chinmoy Krishna Das, a former ISKCON member, on sedition charges. His arrest and the denial of bail sparked protests by the Hindu community across Bangladesh, including Dhaka and Chattogram.

In response to the violence, India has expressed serious concerns. External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar told Parliament, “The surge in extremist rhetoric and violence is unacceptable. It is Bangladesh’s responsibility to protect its minorities.” Meanwhile, Bangladesh has expressed concerns over protests outside its deputy high commission in Kolkata, urging India to ensure the protection of its diplomatic missions.

Combining milk and cola, which are usually incompatible, the drink offers a unique taste experience. The dhaba claims to have perfected the preparation method to prevent the milk from curdling, ensuring a smooth, authentic flavor that others can’t match.

While some on social media are fascinated and excited to try the drink, others remain skeptical. One user remarked, “I can’t believe this exists! Aradhana Chatterjee mentioned, “Designed for hot climates, this drink has become one of the most famous items on their menu.”

</excerpt>

A recent advertisement by Kolkata’s famous magician PC Sorcar has captured attention after it appeared in the ‘Patra-Patri Chai’ section of a Sunday newspaper. The ad, which promotes a Swayamvar for his three daughters, caught many off guard, with some initially questioning its legitimacy.

The unconventional nature of the ad included a candid request for a prospective groom: “Regardless of caste, creed, age (38-45), handsome, tall, well-established man wanted.”

PC Sorcar Jr.’s daughters—Maneka, Mumtaz, and Maubani—are all accomplished in their own fields. Maneka follows her father’s footsteps in magic, while Mumtaz and Maubani have established themselves as actors.

In an interview with ‘Hindustan Times Bangla’, Maubani, the youngest daughter, spoke about the family’s unique approach to marriage. She explained that she believes in the concept of ‘soulmates,’ noting that relationships, whether arranged or through love, are about the connection between two hearts. Reflecting on the Swayamvar tradition, she said, “It’s a beautiful process of selecting a life partner, and that’s how I see this marriage.”

Although Maubani has been single for some time, she emphasized her desire not to waste anyone’s time. She highlighted that, while external appearances might be important in the media industry, a kind heart and honesty are what truly matter. “You have to be able to live under the same roof with someone who has a beautiful heart,” she shared.

Maubani also reflected on the changing dynamics of relationships. Citing her aunt Maneka’s divorce in 2012, she remarked, “Marriage is a big decision, but sometimes getting out of a toxic marriage is better than staying in an unhappy one. In light of this, the IMD has placed the city under an orange alert for heavy rain.

Weather Forecast and Alerts

Today’s forecast indicates a generally cloudy sky with heavy rainfall expected throughout the day. The maximum temperature is predicted to reach 29 degrees Celsius, while the minimum will hover around 24 degrees Celsius.

Red Alerts in Surrounding Areas

Anticipated Impacts of Cyclone Dana

The IMD has outlined potential impacts from Cyclone Dana, which may include:

Visibility Issues: Heavy rainfall may result in occasional reductions in visibility.

Traffic Disruptions: Increased travel times and incidents are expected due to waterlogged roads and poor visibility in major cities.

Impact on Marine Transport: There may be disruptions to marine and inland water transportation, including small boats and trawlers.

Damage to Infrastructure: Power and communication lines may be affected, along with potential damage to horticulture and standing crops from inundation and strong winds.

Flight Operations Suspended

To ensure the safety of passengers and airport staff, the Airports Authority of India (AAI) has announced the suspension of flight operations at Kolkata Airport.
Social Media Backlash

The model shared photos on Instagram where she is seen posing with two friends at the Durga Puja pandal. One friend wore a long black gown with a thigh-high slit, while the other opted for an orange minidress with knee-length boots. Social media users quickly deemed the trio’s outfits as “indecent” and “vulgar,” with comments pouring in across platforms like X (formerly Twitter). Many felt the clothes were disrespectful to the sanctity of the religious site.

A Divided Opinion

One X user wrote, “Call me regressive, but this is outright stupid.” Another person questioned, “Isn’t it basic common sense to dress accordingly when visiting a temple?” Meanwhile, activist Deepika Bhardwaj also shared the photo, which has since gone viral. Some users wondered if the image had been edited, while others called for stricter dress codes at religious sites to prevent such incidents in the future.

The debate has sparked discussions on cultural sensitivity and appropriate attire at religious events, with opinions sharply divided over the incident.

A video shared by user Abir Ghoshal on X (formerly Twitter) showcases a metro-themed puja pandal in Kolkata, leaving viewers astounded. The video opens with the pandal’s entrance, designed to resemble a real metro station, complete with seats, handrails, and grab handles. It features screens displaying announcements typical of a metro environment, along with a platform and escalators that make it hard to distinguish from an actual metro station.

Metro Station Comes to Life in Kolkata

Set up at Jagat Mukherjee Park, this innovative pandal has been meticulously crafted to provide visitors with an authentic experience akin to being inside a Green Line metro coach. “It took months of research and multiple trips in the metro for us to engineer this authentic feel,” said Dwaipayan Roy, one of the chief organizers.

A Collective Artistic Effort

Artist Subal Pal explained that their team even consulted with Metro Rail authorities to refine their concept, resulting in an impressive homage to Kolkata’s metro system. The pandal includes a motor that simulates the sensation of a moving train, allowing visitors to feel the train slow down as they approach the exit gate. “Engineers and artists came together to accomplish the final product,” Pal added.

The video, shared on October 7, has already garnered over 850,000 views and continues to attract attention. Reactions poured in, with many praising the creativity while others expressed concerns about potential overcrowding.

Reactions from the Online Community

Commenters on social media were quick to share their thoughts on the pandal. “It’s truly iconic,” remarked one user, while another exclaimed, “Wow! That is so amazing.”

Yet, some users raised safety concerns, suggesting that the narrow design might lead to claustrophobic conditions in crowded situations. One user noted, “This is so narrow, could be claustrophobic if a lot of crowd comes. Hope there’s no stampede,” while another echoed similar sentiments.

Unsurprisingly, this unusual recipe has sparked a range of reactions online. Instagram users flooded the comments section with their opinions on the unexpected pairing of eggs and soda.

While some viewers preferred to stick with traditional anda bhurji, others embraced the playful side of this creation. “This is what happens when you run out of oil and only have Fanta in the fridge,” quipped one comment.

Interestingly, some were more intrigued than critical. “I don’t know why, but I really want to try this,” confessed one adventurous foodie, while another exclaimed, “Only in India! This is why I love street food here.”

The sculpture, crafted by renowned artist Asit Sain, is intended to symbolize the victim’s pain and trauma. Positioned on a pedestal in front of the PGB Gardens near the principal’s office, the statue stands as a stark reminder of the incident.

Symbol of Pain

The fibreglass sculpture depicts the bust of a woman screaming, meant to embody the agony endured by the victim, referred to as ‘Abhaya’. An inscription on the pedestal states that the statue reflects the “hellish brutality” the doctor suffered during the tragic incident at the hospital. A junior doctor expressed to The Indian Express: “She was our colleague. We have been fighting for her. This installation ensures no one will ever forget her.” Another doctor added, “This statue is not of the victim, but a symbol of the pain and torture she went through, and the ongoing protests.”

The unveiling of the statue comes amidst ongoing protests by junior doctors demanding justice for the victim and improved safety measures for healthcare workers. On Wednesday, thousands of junior doctors participated in a protest march organized by the Bengal Junior Doctors’ Front. The march, which began at College Street and ended in the Esplanade area, signified a fresh escalation in the doctors’ agitation.

Public Backlash

While the intentions behind the statue were to honor the victim, it has received significant backlash on social media for being perceived as disrespectful and tone-deaf. Critics questioned the decision to create a statue based on a rape victim, calling the depiction “weird and disrespectful.” One X user commented, “Indian women can’t even be remembered with pride. It’s either perpetually being in pain or being forgotten.” Others criticized the insensitivity of the statue’s design and its potential to retraumatize those affected by the tragedy.

Despite the controversy, junior doctors remain steadfast in their demand for action. “We will continue our protest until the government takes decisive steps to ensure the safety of healthcare workers,” one of the protestors said. The unveiling of the statue has not only reignited conversations around the tragic incident but also highlighted the ongoing struggle for better security measures within healthcare institutions in India.

</excerpt>

An Iraqi Airways flight en route from Baghdad to Guangzhou made an emergency landing at Kolkata’s Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport after a 16-year-old passenger fell critically ill. The girl, identified as Deran Samir Ahmed from Baghdad, was declared “brought dead” at a local hospital.

The flight IA-473, carrying 100 passengers and 15 crew members, diverted its course and landed in Kolkata at 10:18 p.m. on Wednesday. A medical team at the airport attended to the teenager, but she showed no signs of life. Despite immediate medical intervention, the airport health officer found no pulse or heartbeat and referred her to a hospital.

The passenger and her two co-travelers were offloaded and taken to a private hospital, where doctors confirmed her death. The police have registered a case of unnatural death based on the hospital’s report.

The girl’s body was taken for post-mortem, and the Iraqi Embassy in Delhi has been notified. The family will be allowed to take the body home once formalities are completed. </excerpt>

Sourav Ganguly, the former captain of the Indian cricket team, has recently been involved in two high-profile incidents. Last month, Ganguly, along with his wife Dona and daughter Sana, organized a candlelight vigil in Kolkata to seek justice for a victim in the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital case.

Police Complaint Against YouTuber

In a separate matter, Sourav Ganguly has lodged a formal complaint against Mrinmoy Das, a Bengali YouTuber known as Cinebap. The complaint, filed through Ganguly’s secretary Taniya Bhattacharya, accuses Das of using offensive language and making derogatory remarks about Ganguly in a social media video. The video reportedly includes inappropriate content related to the recent rape and murder case of a doctor in Kolkata, linking Ganguly to the controversy in a defamatory manner.

The complaint details the video as harmful and insulting, stating: “This individual has posted a video on a social media platform that targets Sourav Ganguly, using abusive language and making derogatory remarks, which are harmful to his reputation.”

Call for Legal Action

Bhattacharya’s complaint urges immediate legal action, highlighting the seriousness of cyberbullying and defamation. She requests the intervention of the cyber department to address the issue and ensure justice for Ganguly.

Ongoing Police Investigation

Police have confirmed that they are investigating the case as a potential instance of online harassment. A police officer noted: “We have received an email regarding the matter and are currently investigating it.” This situation underscores the growing concern of cyberbullying in today’s digital age.

Public Backlash and Criticism

Additionally, Sourav Ganguly has faced criticism for his remarks on the tragic incident at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, further adding to the media attention surrounding him.

</excerpt>

Several areas in south Bengal face a massive flood risk as the Damodar Valley Corporation (DVC) released 3 lakh cusecs of water from its Panchet and Maithon dams within seven hours on the night of September 16 amid incessant low-pressure rains.
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee visited Pursurah in Hooghly district to take stock of the situation and said it is a “man-made” flood, caused by the Centre as DVC had never released so much water earlier.

“This is a man-made flood. They planned to drown Bengal. I personally spoke to the DVC authorities. I spoke to Hemant Soren, Chief Minister of Jharkhand at least thrice. The last time DVC released so much water was in 2009,” Banerjee told reporters.
“It was done to drown West Bengal. The Centre doesn’t undertake dredging. If dredging is done DVC can hold more water. Why do they not release water gradually when the dam is 70% – 80% full? In a bid to save Jharkhand, they release the water to Bengal. How much deprivation we shall take?” Banerjee complained.

“Even the water level in the Adi Ganga has shot up. I have never seen so much water in Adi Ganga. DVC released a huge amount of water. People have been requested to move to flood shelters. A few people got trapped at Khanakul in Hooghly district,” she told reporters earlier.

The Chief Minister’s residence at Kalighat in south Kolkata is located on the banks of the Adi Ganga, the original channel of River Ganga passing through Kolkata.
According to data shared by DVC, around 2.5 lakh cusec water was released for around six hours on Tuesday. The last time such a huge amount of water was released was in September 2009. DVC had then released 3,03,046 cusecs from its Panchet and Maithon dams.

“We released 2.5 lakh cusecs for around six hours on Tuesday. West Bengal was informed. The flow of release was reduced to 1.2 lakh cusecs later during the day,” said a DVC official.
Mamata also asked District Magistrates to remain alert and Nabanna, the State secretariat, has instructed officials to be prepared to deal with the situation.

Two people have already died because of this flood-like situation. While one person died due to wall collapse following rain in Purba Bardhaman district, another died of electrocution in Hooghly district. In Murshidabad district, floodwaters swept away a seven-year-old girl.

</excerpt>

The father of a trainee doctor who was brutally raped and murdered at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital has publicly criticized West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee for her inaction regarding past allegations against the former principal, Sandip Ghosh. The victim’s father asserts that his daughter might still be alive had the Chief Minister taken appropriate action back in 2021.

Accusations of Inaction and Corruption

Speaking to the media, the victim’s father expressed deep frustration, stating, “The day the accused will be punished will be our victory. In 2021, many allegations were leveled against former principal Sandip Ghosh; if the Chief Minister had taken action then, my daughter might have been alive today.” His comments came as junior doctors continued their protests against the grisly murder, which has captured national attention.

The victim, a trainee doctor, was found dead inside a seminar hall at the hospital on August 9. Her autopsy report revealed that she had suffered 25 internal and external injuries, indicating severe sexual assault and torture. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has alleged that Sandip Ghosh was involved in a cover-up, including delaying the filing of a murder FIR and attempting to pass off the murder as a suicide. Ghosh is also accused of corruption, including the sale of unclaimed corpses.

Protests and Government Response

The murder FIR was reportedly registered 14 hours after the crime was discovered. The delay and subsequent handling of the case have intensified protests among the medical community. In response to the protests, the West Bengal government has agreed to transfer Kolkata Police Commissioner Rajeev Kumar, appointing Manoj Kumar Verma as the new police chief. Despite this concession, the protesting doctors have yet to end their strike.

The controversy has highlighted serious issues of accountability and governance within the medical and law enforcement systems in Kolkata. The ongoing investigation by the CBI continues to uncover the full extent of the alleged misconduct and corruption surrounding the case.

</excerpt>

The ongoing protest by junior doctors in West Bengal has escalated as they refuse to comply with the Supreme Court’s 5 PM “back to work” deadline. In defiance, the protesting doctors have set their own deadline for the state government, demanding their grievances be addressed by 5 PM today. Should the government fail to meet their demands, the doctors have vowed to stage a sit-in protest outside the health secretariat.

Junior Doctors Reject Supreme Court Order

Despite the clear directive for doctors by Supreme Court to resume duties by 5 PM, the protesting junior doctors have refused to return to work. Instead, they have hardened their stance and presented a five-point list of demands, the centerpiece of which calls for the resignation of several key officials.

Counter-Deadline to the Government

In response to the Supreme Court’s ruling, the doctors have issued a counter-deadline, pressing the state government to meet their demands by 5 PM. The protestors have made it clear that failure to do so will result in a sit-down protest at Swastha Bhavan, the state’s health secretariat located in Salt Lake, on the outskirts of Kolkata.

Key Demands Include Resignations of Senior Officials

The five-point list of demands begins with the resignation of Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Goyal. Additionally, the doctors have called for the removal of several senior officials from the health ministry, expressing dissatisfaction with the administration’s handling of their concerns.

Protest March Gains Momentum

Hundreds of junior doctors have now gathered and are marching toward Swastha Bhavan to pressurize the government to take immediate action. The protest, which started with a few, has now swelled, as more doctors join in solidarity with their colleagues.

The standoff between the government and the protesting doctors shows no signs of easing, and the coming hours are likely to be critical in determining the course of the movement.

</excerpt>

The family of the trainee doctor, who was allegedly raped and murdered at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital last month, has accused the police of attempting to cover up the crime. On Wednesday, the victim’s father claimed that the Kolkata Police hurriedly cremated his daughter’s body and tried to offer the family a bribe to keep them quiet.

According to the father, the police restricted their access to the body after it was taken for post-mortem and later tried to suppress the case. “We weren’t allowed to see our daughter’s body, and while we waited at the police station, a senior officer offered us money, which we refused,” the father told news agency PTI.

Protests by Junior Doctors and Family’s Demand for Justice

The victim’s family, along with junior doctors, participated in a protest at the hospital on Wednesday night, demanding justice for the 31-year-old woman. The protests come amid increasing outrage over how the case has been handled by authorities.

The victim’s semi-naked body was found on August 9 in the seminar hall of RG Kar Medical College. The following day, Kolkata Police arrested the prime suspect, Sanjay Roy, after CCTV footage captured him near the crime scene. Roy’s Bluetooth headphones were also discovered at the location, further implicating him. Investigations revealed that the victim was sexually assaulted and then killed by being throttled and smothered.

CBI Takes Over Investigation

In response to growing concerns about the police investigation, the Calcutta High Court transferred the case to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) a week after the incident.

Nationwide Protests Demand Justice

The brutal crime has sparked massive protests across India, with people, including medical professionals, demanding swift justice. In Kolkata, junior doctors expressed their outrage by presenting a hand-made artificial spine to Police Commissioner Vineet Goyal, calling for his resignation over alleged lapses in the investigation. The gesture symbolized their demand for the police to “grow a backbone.”

Ongoing Protests by Junior Doctors

Junior doctors at state-run hospitals in West Bengal have continued their protests, leaving health services disrupted. Medical professionals are standing in solidarity with the victim, demanding accountability and proper investigation into the case.

‘Reclaim the Night’ Campaign for Justice

In a powerful display of unity, Kolkata residents turned off their lights at 9 p.m. and walked the streets with candles, calling for justice in a crime that has shaken the city.

The ruling Trinamool Congress government in West Bengal is set to introduce a groundbreaking anti-rape bill in the state assembly on Tuesday. Named the “Aparajita Woman and Child Bill (West Bengal Criminal Laws and Amendment) Bill 2024,” this proposed legislation aims to significantly tighten the legal framework surrounding rape and sexual violence in the state.

Key Provisions of the New Bill

The bill introduces stringent measures, including the imposition of the death penalty for individuals convicted of rape if the crime results in the victim’s death or a permanent unconscious state. Additionally, it mandates life imprisonment without the possibility of parole for convicted offenders.

Amendments to Existing Laws

The Aparajita Bill proposes amendments to several sections of the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita (BNS) 2023 and Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) 2023, as well as the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act 2012. Specifically, it seeks to amend Sections 64, 66, 70(1), 71, 72(1), 73, 124(1), and 124(2) of the BNS 2023, which pertain to the punishment for various forms of rape and related crimes. The bill also proposes to remove Sections 65(1), 65(2), and 70(2) related to punishments for offenders under different age categories.

Improved Investigation and Trial Procedures

The Anti-Rape Bill aims to streamline the investigation process by reducing the deadline for investigations from two months to three weeks, with a possible extension of up to 15 days under special circumstances. It also proposes life imprisonment for repeat offenders, which would be defined as imprisonment for the remainder of the offender’s natural life or death, accompanied by a fine.

Formation of Special Task Forces

To handle cases efficiently, the bill calls for the creation of a special task force named “Aparajitha Task Force” at the district level. Led by a deputy superintendent of police, this task force will be equipped with the necessary resources to manage investigations and minimize the trauma experienced by victims and their families.

Special Courts and Confidentiality Measures

Additionally, the bill proposes the establishment of special courts to handle rape and sexual assault cases. It also includes provisions for maintaining confidentiality during court proceedings, with penalties of 3 to 5 years imprisonment and fines for unauthorized disclosures.

Legislative Session

State Law Minister Moloy Ghatak will introduce the bill during this session.

The introduction of this Anti-Rape Bill reflects the state government’s commitment to creating a safer environment for women and children in West Bengal.
