</excerpt>

Eight years ago, when the Pinarayi Vijayan-led Left Democratic Front (LDF) came to power in Kerala, a cabinet decision to cull “dangerous” dogs sparked global outrage and led to a “Boycott Kerala” campaign among travelers. However, in the LDF’s stronghold in the Malabar region lies a unique temple where dogs are not only protected but worshipped.

Parassini Madappura Sree Muthappan Temple

The Parassini Madappura Sree Muthappan Temple in Kannur district attracts tens of thousands of devotees daily, who come to worship the dogs. Located on the banks of the Valapattanam River, the temple is easily recognized by the two bronze statues of dogs guarding its entrance. Devotees believe that dogs are the favorite animals of the temple’s deity, Sree Muthappan, considered an incarnation of Lord Shiva and Vishnu. After daily prayers, the priest first offers prasadam to a dog.

Historical Significance

The temple’s history is intertwined with the oppressive customs of the past that denied dignity and freedom to lower-caste members in the Malabar region. Sree Muthappan is viewed as a liberator for marginalized communities, who historically shared a close bond with animals, particularly dogs. According to mythology, Sree Muthappan was always accompanied by a dog when he arrived in the Malabar region to combat social evils.

Nirmal Parassini Madappura, a relative of the temple trustee, notes, “Sree Muthappan was always accompanied by a dog. Dogs are considered sacred here and roam free in large numbers inside and in the vicinity of the temple.” The temple estimates about 9,000 visitors on weekdays and 25,000 on weekends.

Feeding the Sacred Dogs

Each morning and evening, the temple holds a nayoottu, a ceremony for feeding the dogs, primarily with dried fish. Madappura explains, “The dogs within the temple premises and around show up for nayoottu. They know when it is time for the feeding.” The temple is also a bustling tourist destination, with luxury buses arriving from as far as Coorg in Karnataka, and numerous shops selling local wares lining the streets.

The Cradle of Communism

The temple’s location in Anthoor village, known as the “cradle of communism” in Kerala, adds another layer to its significance. Madappura mentions, “It was here that prominent Communist leaders like A K Gopalan stayed hiding from the police during the Emergency.”

Among the temple dogs, Sundari, a six-year-old local breed, stands out. “She is a star,” says Madappura, referring to Sundari’s lineage as the daughter of Meenu, the oldest dog at the temple, who is 14 years old.

Protecting Strays

Sushma Prabhu, founder of the PAW Kannur animal shelter, highlights the absence of bite incidents among the temple’s dogs. “People visit the temple to offer prayers in the name of their dogs. If someone’s pet dog is unwell, they will go to the Parassini temple and pray for its well-being,” she explains.

Prabhu, who runs an animal shelter for strays and abandoned animals, notes, “Generally, people are anti-stray in Kerala, but there are also people who love dogs.”

Aditya Ramesan, a visitor at the temple, adds, “I don’t have a pet yet, but I like dogs… Nobody has been hurt by dogs here.”

In July, the Supreme Court ruled against indiscriminate killings of stray dogs, advocating for sterilization and vaccination instead, which highlights a growing shift towards animal rights in the state.

A Unique Connection Through Theyyam

The Parassini temple reflects the deep connections between humans and dogs, interwoven with local beliefs and cultural practices. One notable aspect is Kerala’s famous dance-drama ritual, Theyyam, which draws large audiences.

Santosh U P, a Theyyam researcher, states, “Theyyam performances are therapeutic. The performers wearing colorful masks and costumes are all from lower castes, who were not historically allowed entry into temples before and had to create their own space of worship through the performances.” He adds, “The audience forms an attachment with the Theyyam (performer), their god, to whom they tell their worries and needs. The performer also talks about dogs sometimes. Some stray dogs will also be in the vicinity of the performance.”

In this sacred space, dogs are not just animals but integral to the temple’s rituals and the community’s spiritual fabric.

</excerpt>

On Saturday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Wayanad, Kerala, to assess the aftermath of the catastrophic landslides that struck the region on July 30. Modi is scheduled to arrive in Kannur around 11 am and will conduct an aerial survey of the landslide-affected areas.

By 12:15 pm, the Prime Minister will be on the ground, where he will receive updates from rescue teams on evacuation efforts and oversee ongoing rehabilitation activities. His visit will include a stop at a relief camp and hospital to meet with survivors and victims’ families. Modi will also chair a review meeting to get a comprehensive briefing on the situation and the relief measures in place.

The landslides have claimed 226 lives and left over 130 individuals missing. Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has reported that efforts are underway to include relatives in the search operation as a last resort to locate the missing. “I am in search of my brothers, hoping to get at least a body part of our dear ones. Many of our relatives and friends are still missing,” survivor Mohanan told PTI.

The state has mobilized excavators, equipment, and hundreds of rescue workers to aid in the recovery efforts. Meanwhile, Rahul Gandhi, leader of the opposition in the Lok Sabha, has called on the central government to declare the Wayanad landslides a national disaster. “I visited Wayanad with my sister some days back and saw firsthand the devastation, pain, and suffering resulting from this tragedy. More than 200 people are dead, and many are missing, but the eventual casualty count is expected to be over 400,” Gandhi stated, reflecting on the dire situation.

In a ray of hope amid the devastating Wayanad landslides, a family of four was rescued from an isolated house near Padavetti Kunnu on the fourth day of the catastrophic event. As search operations entered their fifth day on Saturday, rescue teams, equipped with advanced technology and cadaver dogs, continued their relentless efforts to find survivors or recover bodies buried under the debris.

Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan shared on Facebook that radar technology was detecting even the slightest movements, offering glimmers of hope amidst the tragedy.

Wayanad Landslides: Latest Updates

Rising Death Toll and Discharges: The number of bodies recovered from the landslides has increased to 210, while 187 people have been discharged from hospitals. However, approximately 300 individuals remain missing, with diminishing hope of finding them alive.

Family of Four Rescued: A family of four was rescued from an isolated house near Padavetti Kunnu, providing a beacon of hope for the hundreds of rescuers tirelessly searching for more survivors.

Extensive Search Operations: Around 40 rescue teams, aided by cadaver dogs, are conducting search operations across six zones in the landslide-affected areas. The dogs’ keen sense of smell is crucial in locating survivors trapped under the rubble.

Daring Forest Officer Rescue: In a brave operation, forest officers rescued four toddlers and their parents from a tribal community. Led by Kalpetta Range Forest Officer K Hashis, the team trekked deep into the forest to save the family.

Potential Signs of Life: An official involved in the search reported a “blue signal,” indicating potential signs of breath, detected on radar near a house in Mundakkai village. However, the search concluded on Friday evening with no survivors found under the debris.

Weather Forecast: The India Meteorological Department has forecast a generally cloudy sky with occasional spells of rain or thundershowers for Wayanad on Saturday.

Ecologically Sensitive Area Notification: The Centre issued a draft notification to declare over 56,800 square kilometers of the Western Ghats, including 13 villages in Wayanad, as an Ecologically Sensitive Area (ESA). This move came a day after the landslides claimed over 300 lives in Wayanad.

Political Accusations: The Congress accused the Centre of delaying the ‘ecologically sensitive area’ designation for parts of the Western Ghats, alleging it contributed to the human tragedy in Wayanad.

Privilege Motion Notice: Congress General Secretary Jairam Ramesh moved a Privilege Motion notice in the Rajya Sabha against Union Home Minister Amit Shah, accusing him of misleading the house with false statements regarding early warnings for the Wayanad landslide.

As rescue operations continue, the resilience and determination of the search teams, along with the hope of uncovering more survivors, stand as a testament to human spirit in the face of one of Kerala’s worst natural calamities.

</excerpt>

The Indian Coast Guard (ICG) conducted a successful rescue operation on Wednesday to save the crew of the fishing boat Aashni, which was stranded 80 nautical miles off the Kochi coast. The rescue mission was launched amidst challenging weather conditions exacerbated by heavy rainfall, as announced by the Ministry of Defence.

The distress call was answered after an Indian Coast Guard ICG Dornier aircraft, engaged in maritime surveillance, spotted the distressed boat. A swift response followed, with the ICG deploying the patrol ship Saksham and later, the vessel Abhinav, along with an Advanced Light Helicopter for aerial support.

The Aashni was facing critical issues including hull rupture and propulsion failure, leaving its 11-member crew in imminent danger. A technical team from the coast guard managed to board the boat, initiating de-flooding operations while providing essential technical assistance, fresh water, and rations to the crew members battling rough seas and torrential rains.

Following the successful rescue operation, the fishing boat was handed over to the Fisheries Department for further assistance and inspection.

This operation marks another instance of the ICG’s commitment to safeguarding India’s maritime territories, as highlighted by the Ministry of Defence. Earlier in May, a similar rescue effort by the ICG off the Goa coast saved 24 tourists and two crew members from a stranded boat amidst challenging sea conditions.

“The operation once again underscored the ICG’s dedication to ensuring the safety and security of the country’s maritime zones,” stated the Ministry of Defence, emphasizing the crucial role played by the coast guard in maritime rescue operations.

</excerpt>

A sanitation worker, identified as Joy, was tragically found dead on Monday morning after a strenuous 46-hour search operation in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala. Joy, aged 47 and a contractual laborer, had gone missing while cleaning the Amayizhanchan Canal near Thampanoor Central Railway Station on Saturday.

The discovery a sanitation worker, Joy’s body, located approximately one kilometer away from where he was last seen, was confirmed by his colleagues Rajeev and Manoj. The incident occurred amidst heavy rainfall that had swept his body into a canal stretch behind Sree Chitra Home at Thakarapparambu, as reported by The New Indian Express.

The search efforts involved multiple agencies, including the fire force, police, civic workers, and the National Disaster Response Force. The Indian Navy also joined the operation following their arrival on Sunday night, as reported by Asianet News.

Despite the use of Bandicoot robots by scuba divers from the Kerala Water Authority to aid in the search, the presence of accumulated waste in the canal proved challenging. Scuba diver Vojin M noted that large bundles of garbage obstructed their efforts, making it difficult to maneuver inside the tunnel where Joy’s body was eventually found.

Joy, who had secured the canal cleaning contract from the Railways, leaves behind his mother Melhi. The incident has underscored the risks faced by sanitation workers in hazardous conditions while performing essential duties.

Efforts are underway to investigate the circumstances leading to Joy’s tragic death, with authorities focusing on improving safety measures for workers in similar environments.

In addition to the orange alert, a yellow alert was issued for nine other districts in Kerala. A yellow alert signifies that these districts should stay updated about changing weather conditions that could lead to localized issues.

The decision to issue these alerts was taken due to the ongoing heavy rainfall affecting Kerala. These alerts are important as they help communities and authorities prepare for possible risks and take necessary precautions in advance to safeguard lives and property. It is essential for everyone to closely look at updates from the IMD and follow safety guidelines during this period of intense weather activity.

Looking ahead, the weather department has forecasted thunderstorms with moderate rainfall and winds specifically in Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Idukki, and Ernakulam districts for the day. Furthermore, an orange alert has been extended for Malappuram, Kozhikode, Kannur, and Kasaragod districts from June 14 to June 16. This extended alert period underscores the potential for sustained severe weather conditions in these regions, urging residents to remain alert and prepared.

Residents are strongly advised to stay updated on weather forecasts, avoid unnecessary travel during adverse weather conditions, and take necessary precautions to ensure personal safety and minimize any potential impacts from the unstable weather. It is advised to not leave your house during the heavy rainfall for utmost safety of you and your family

The actor-turned-politician also praised the late former Kerala Chief Minister K Karunakaran as a ‘courageous administrator’, as per PTI.

Following his visit to the memorial ‘Murali Mandiram’ in Thrissur, Suresh Gopi, BJP’s MP from Kerala, referred to late former CMs K Karunakaran and EK Nayanar as his ‘political gurus’. Gopi won the Thrissur constituency by a significant margin of nearly 75,000 votes against CPI(M) candidate VS Sunilkumar, with Karunakaran’s son K Muraleedharan finishing third in the contest. Emphasizing that his remarks should not be politicized, Gopi stated that he visited the memorial to pay respects to his mentors, as reported by PTI. He also mentioned having personal connections with Karunakaran and his wife, Kalyanikutty Amma, akin to his relationship with EK Nayanar and Sarada Teacher.

Suresh Gopi Hails Indira Gandhi As ‘Mother of India’

Gopi, serving as the Minister of State for Tourism and Petroleum, referred to India’s first woman Prime Minister, Indira Gandhi, as ‘Bharathathinte mathavu (mother of India)’, and labeled Karunakaran as the “father of the Congress party in the state”.

Gopi clarified that honoring Karunakaran with such a title was not meant to disrespect the founders or co-founders of the Congress in Kerala. He continued to praise Karunakaran, describing the late Congress leader as a “courageous administrator” of his era.

Following his swearing-in as a minister in the Narendra Modi government, there were speculations that Gopi might resign from his position. However, he categorically dismissed media reports suggesting that he was contemplating an ‘exit’ from the Narendra Modi-led government as ‘grossly incorrect’.

</excerpt>

As Northern India continues to face heatwaves, some parts of the country like Kerala, Gujarat, and Maharashtra have already experienced the onset of monsoon. Heavy rains were reported in Mumbai recently, marking an early arrival compared to the usual schedule. However, states such as Jharkhand, Bihar, Delhi, and Punjab are still awaiting relief from the scorching heat.

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has indicated that the monsoon could progress to cover Odisha, coastal Andhra Pradesh, and the north-west Bay of Bengal in the coming days. Despite this, northwest India has seen a significant rainfall deficit of 53%, while southern India has received 60% more rainfall than usual from June 1 to 12.

In Maharashtra, the southwest monsoon advanced slowly, covering large parts of the state. Central and northern India, on the other hand, are experiencing prolonged heatwave conditions. The IMD forecasts heatwave conditions in parts of Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Punjab, and Jharkhand until June 16, with a heatwave warning for Delhi until June 18.

Looking ahead, the IMD predicts that monsoon rains across the country have been 4% below normal so far this season. Monsoon watchers attribute the delayed onset in parts of central and northern India to low-level warm winds from the northwest, which are dominating the weak monsoon pulse over the Bay of Bengal.

Specifically, monsoon arrival in Delhi and other parts of northern India is expected around June 27. Meanwhile, heatwave conditions persist in several states, exacerbating the agricultural and environmental challenges posed by delayed monsoon onset.

The incident, which claimed the lives of over 40 Indians, including 19 from Kerala, has prompted urgent action from the state authorities.

Health Minister Veena George is set to travel to Kuwait to oversee relief efforts firsthand, underscoring the government’s commitment to assist those affected by this tragic event. The government has announced an ex-gratia payment of Rs 5 lakh for the families of the deceased and Rs 1 lakh for the injured, aiming to alleviate immediate financial burdens. Joining Minister George in Kuwait will be State Mission Director (NHM) Jeevan Babu, tasked with coordinating medical assistance for Kerala residents injured in the fire and facilitating the return of deceased bodies back to their families.

The state cabinet, led by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, has expressed deep condolences and solidarity with the affected families. Additionally, prominent Kerala-based businessmen Yusuf Ali and Ravi Pillai have pledged generous contributions of Rs 5 lakh and Rs 2 lakh respectively, channeled through the Non-Resident Keralites Affairs (NORKA), bringing total assistance to Rs 12 lakh per family.

Efforts are being made under the leadership of NORKA and with the initiative of expatriates to provide all possible assistance to those affected by the disaster,” the Kerala government said.

Kerala’s representative in Delhi, Professor K V Thomas, is in continuous communication with the Ministry of External Affairs, facilitating coordinated efforts between the state and central governments to address the aftermath of the tragedy.

As Kerala stands in solidarity with the grieving families, the government reassures its unwavering support and pledges to continue its efforts until all necessary assistance is provided to those in need during this difficult time.

</excerpt>

In the upcoming Phase 2 of parliamentary elections on April 26, the participation of women candidates remains a concern, with only 8.6% of the 1,198 candidates vying for 87 parliamentary seats being women. This percentage, while slightly higher than the previous phase’s 8.2%, underscores the persistent gender gap in political representation. Kerala emerges as the frontrunner in terms of female candidates, boasting 25 women in the fray across all 14 of its 20 parliamentary constituencies slated for Phase 2. Following closely are Maharashtra and Karnataka, each with 21 women contesting across their respective constituencies.

However, the disparity is evident in states like Uttar Pradesh, where only 10 women are contesting across six of the eight parliamentary constituencies in Phase 2. Rajasthan similarly lags behind, with just seven women candidates across six of its 13 Lok Sabha seats. The situation is even more disheartening in Madhya Pradesh, where only five female contestants are spread across six constituencies, excluding Betul, where polling was postponed due to the unfortunate demise of a BSP candidate.

Even states witnessing polling in Phase 2 with fewer constituencies, such as West Bengal, Bihar, and Chhattisgarh, are not immune to this trend, each having only three women candidates in the fray. Assam and Tripura have two women candidates each, while Jammu & Kashmir has a sole female contestant among its 22 hopefuls in the Jammu parliamentary constituency.

On a constituency level, Bangalore North and Amravati (SC) in Maharashtra boast the highest number of women candidates, with six each. Not far behind are constituencies like Nanded in Maharashtra and Vadakara in Kerala, with four women each competing for parliamentary seats. Additionally, seats like Bangalore South, Kasaragod, Baghpat, and Mathura witness the participation of three women candidates each.

Turning to party representation, the BJP leads the pack with 10 women candidates, followed by Congress with five, BSP with six, and smaller parties like CPM, CPI, SP, Shiv Sena, RJD, and LJP, each fielding one female candidate.

In the earlier Phase 1, out of 1,625 candidates across 102 parliamentary constituencies, only 134 were women, indicating the pressing need for greater gender inclusivity and representation in India’s political landscape.

According to eyewitnesses and reports from local officials, the fire quickly consumed a large area of about 20 kilometers, which included portions of the surrounding forest and a rubber plantation.

The incident occurred in the bamboo-rich forest near Moolankavu in Sultan Bathery and was ascribed to rising mercury levels and dry circumstances. Strong winds caused the fire to spread swiftly, posing a threat to the safety of firemen and other rescue workers.

Fortunately, no casualties have been recorded as of the most recent updates. Residents, authorities, and the fire department all responded quickly to help limit the fire to some degree. Despite the difficult circumstances, teams are working nonstop to completely put out the flames and stop them from spreading.

Authorities ensured that precautions have been taken to protect residential areas from the advancing fire front. The situation is still fluid, though, and it is not yet clear how much damage has been done.
As things develop, more information on the damage evaluation is expected to be released.

The family, identified as Anand Sujith Henry, 42, his wife Alice Priyanka, 40, and their 4-year-old twin sons Noah and Neithan, was found after a relative requested a welfare check when calls went unanswered.

Police found the couple, Anand and Alice, with gunshot wounds in the bathroom, while the twin children were found deceased in a bedroom. A 9mm pistol and a loaded magazine were recovered from the bathroom. The family had moved to the United States nine years ago and had been living in their San Mateo County home for the past two years.

Authorities are investigating the case, but initial assessments suggest a possible murder-suicide. The San Mateo police department stated, “Based on the information we have at this time, this appears to be an isolated incident with no danger to the public as we are confident the person responsible was located within the home.”

The couple was described as friendly, hardworking, and devoted parents, well-liked by neighbors and colleagues. Anand, a software engineer, and Alice, a senior analyst, had purchased the house in 2020 for $2.1 million. Anand had filed for divorce in December 2016, but the separation was not finalized.

The San Mateo County Criminal Investigation Bureau and the San Mateo County Crime Lab are collaborating on the case. The bodies are with the San Mateo County Coroner for identification and notification of next of kin.

This incident is one of several recent tragedies involving Indian-origin individuals in the United States, prompting concerns about safety. U.S. envoy to India Eric Garcetti has affirmed the commitment to ensuring the U.S. remains a safe destination for Indian students.

The Indian Academy of Paediatricians intervened in response to reports of an alarming rise in measles infections in Malappuram and made a call for immunisation.

The Malappuram district was the most severely affected, according to the officials.

“As of now, all states are facing a measles outbreak. In Kerala, Malappuram is the most affected. 160 cases of measles have been reported in the dist. So far there hasn’t been any mortality due to measles in the district,” said Dr. Jose Ouseph, State President of the Indian Academy of Pediatrics, Kerala.

His comments were made in response to the measles vaccination rate dropping after the pandemic.

“There is a chance of it spreading in the coming days. So, we’re pushing for maximum vaccination coverage in the affected areas,” Dr Jose added.

On Wednesday (local time), the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the World Health Organization (WHO) reported that measles vaccination rates had significantly decreased since the coronavirus pandemic started, resulting in a record-high number of nearly 40 million children missing a dose of the vaccine last year.

“There is now an imminent threat of measles spreading to different regions around the world as COVID-19 has led to a steady decline in vaccination coverage and weakened surveillance of the disease,” said WHO and CDC in a joint report.

One of the most contagious human viruses is measles, which can almost fully be avoided by immunisation. To stop community epidemics, however, vaccination coverage must be 95%.

“A record high of nearly 40 million children missed a measles vaccine dose in 2021,” read the joint report.

A one-year-old girl who had the measles died in Mumbai on Monday, according to a statement released by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation earlier on November 28.

14 people have now officially died in the city as a result of the highly contagious illness.

In Kerala’s Wayanad district, a four-year-old boy lost his life after being attacked by the father’s business partner. On Friday, while the toddler Adi Dev and his mother were travelling to an Anganwadi centre, the event occurred in Meppadi. According to a news source, Jithesh, a 45-year-old male, has been detained by police.

Police said that the suspect used a sharp object to viciously attack the mother and the child. Adi Dev was taken to the hospital for treatment after suffering injuries near his left ear and head. He was transferred to the government medical college in Kozhikode, though, as his condition deteriorated. But he passed away early on Saturday. The woman’s condition is stable.

According to accounts, the man harboured resentment toward the victim’s family due to some business dealings with the victim’s father, Jayaprakash. When the mother-and-son team was attacked in broad daylight, neighbours heard their screams and went to assist them.

“We suspect that there were some business-related disputes between the child’s father, Jayaprakash, and the accused, Jithesh. It might have led to the cruel act. It can be confirmed only after detailed interrogation,” a police officer said.

In the Kasargod district of Kerala, one individual has been detained for lifting and throwing a little girl to the ground when she was on the road.

Aboobecker Siddique, a drug addict who lives in the area, has been identified as the accused, according to authorities.

The incident occurred a few days ago, as the minor waited for her uncle to pick her up from the madrassa in Manjeeswaram, Mangalpady.

CCTV footage of the event shows the man approaching the girl wearing a hijab and striking her severely. After that, he raises her and drops her on the ground. The man is then observed leaving the area in a nonchalant manner.

The girl was reportedly in shock and unable to explain what had happened, according to the police. She later explained to her uncle that a stranger had struck her. She wasn’t hurt on the outside, but she was rushed to the hospital for a thorough examination.

After the incident, there was a stir when CCTV footage was extensively circulated on social media.

The arrest was documented, and a case was lodged under sections of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offenses (POCSO) Act and Indian Penal Code (IPC) 307 (attempt to murder).

There are several enigmatic sites in India, from a place where birds commit suicide to a fort where entry is prohibited after sunset. India is undoubtedly a nation of mystery, with a rich culture, a lengthy history, and millions of people who hold mystical and supernatural beliefs. Additionally, several locations in India contradict accepted rules of physics and nature. Five such places are listed here.

Kuldhara village, Rajasthan: The abandoned village

More than 1,500 Paliwal Brahmins, descended from a group that had lived in the area for more than five centuries, lived in Kuldhara about 200 years ago. However, all 85 villages’ inhabitants as well as the general populace escaped one day, overnight. Folklore holds that the inhabitants of Kuldhara left the village with a curse, forbidding any further settlements, rather than simply leaving it as it was. Today, all that is left are a few decaying structures, an ancient temple, and rumours that attempt to explain the sudden evacuation.

How to reach there?

Rail: Jaisalmer, the Golden City of Rajasthan, is about 18 kilometres away from Kuldhara. At Old Delhi Junction, board the Howrah Jaisalmer Express for a 14-hour trip to Jaisalmer.

Road: The 770-kilometer trip from Delhi to Jaisalmer would take approximately 12 hours to complete.

Kodinhi, Kerela: The village of Twins

Kodinhi, a small town located 35 kilometres south of Calicut in Kerala’s Malappuram district, would not have gained international attention if it weren’t for the exceptionally high number of twin births that are frequently reported there. Kodinhi, also referred to as the “Village of Twins,” is home to almost 200 sets of twins and two sets of triplets. It’s fascinating that Kodinhi women who get married outside of their tribe also give birth to several children! Some doctors think that the local water’s chemical composition holds the key to this riddle, despite the fact that the majority of researchers have been unable to solve it.

How to reach there?

Air: Flying up to Calicut International Airport is the best and quickest way to reach this enigmatic village. You can then hire a taxi to take you the last 40 kilometres to Kodinhi.

Kongka La Pass, Ladakh: An Alien Abode

Kongka La Pass, at a height of 16,970 feet, is a low-ridge pass located in a region where China and India have a contentious border. Locals on either side of the border think that the area is inhabited by extraterrestrials, despite the fact that neither the Indian nor Chinese armed forces patrol the area. Here, reports of everything from UFO sightings to encounters with odd humanoids are rather regular.

How to reach there?

Air: Since the Pass is located in a disputed region, access is impeded. By taking a flight from Delhi to Leh, one can still learn more about the strange UFO sightings near the Kongka La Pass.

Roopkund, Uttrakhand: The Skeleton Lake

Every year, hundreds of human skeletons can be seen floating in Roopkund, a glacial lake at an elevation of 16,500 feet, as the ice melts. The bones in Roopkund Lake were rediscovered in 1942 by a forest ranger, but their whereabouts have remained a mystery ever since. Forensic analysis and radiocarbon dating have led researchers to estimate the age of the bodies to be around 1,200 years. Nobody is certain of these individuals’ identities or of their activities in such a hostile area of the Himalayas. Folklore has it that the skeleton remains belong to King Jasdhawal of Kanauj, his expectant wife, and a large number of servants who were on their way to the shrine of Nanda Devi.

How to reach there?

Road: Just as challenging as deciphering the puzzle of the bones is getting to Roopkund in Uttarakhand. If Delhi is your starting location, take the highway up to Loha Jang Pass. From there, hike the remaining 34 kilometres to Roopkund Lake.

Jatinga, Assam: Where Birds Commit Suicide

The Assamese village of Jatinga offers all the amenities you would want from a tranquil vacation spot. Instead of its lush vegetation and mountainous backdrop, Jatinga is well-known for a strange phenomenon that occurs every year in the monsoon season. Hundreds of migratory birds commit mass suicide here just after sunset. Unsurprisingly, the locals offer the scary explanation that the incident was caused by malevolent spirits in the skies. Naturally, ornithologists have developed their own scientific theory because they aren’t happy with this explanation. They claim that the birds are confused by the thick monsoon fog and high altitude. These disoriented birds crash into trees and buildings as they attempt to fly toward the village lights, whereupon many are killed or severely injured. Nobody has ever offered an explanation for why these birds only fly at night or why they always end up stranded in the same spot.

How to reach there?

Air: Board a flight to Silchar Airport in Assam and complete the remaining journey of around 100 km by road to reach it.

In Kerala’s Thiruvalla, two women who were reported missing a few days ago have been found slain in what is thought to be a case of human sacrifice. The women were allegedly kidnapped from Ernakulam and killed near Thiruvalla, according to the police.

Padma and Roslyn, the victims, were “lured” separately by an agent to be sacrificed by a couple.

When Padma vanished from Kadavantra on September 26, a missing case was opened. Roslyn was taken from Kaladi in June, and it was discovered after an investigation that she had been taken in the same way.

As part of the claimed “human sacrifice,” their necks were sliced, and their remains were then buried. The bodies were interred after being divided into pieces. The women supposedly served as sacrifices in order to amass wealth and success.

The agent, Shihab, and the couple, named Bhagaval Singh and his wife Leela, have both been taken into custody.

The police, however, stated that an investigation is underway.

“Two women have been killed. They were killed and buried near their house. The murder was part of a ritualistic human sacrifice. We have information that there is one more case reported. We are trying to ascertain the entire case,” Kochi City Police Commissioner Nagaraju Chakilam said.

“There are many layers to this case. We are now collecting the confession statements from the accused. The exhumation [of bodies] has to be done, and a team has reached the spot to recover the bodies. We now understand that the human sacrifice was made for the financial benefit of the couple. Also, we came to know that the middleman had been paid. One thing is very clear, that the missing lady from Ernakulam is the one who was buried. We need more time to unearth the entire case, and we are also probing into the involvement of more people in the murder,” he added.

Kerala minister M B Rajesh reported that, nine people were murdered and 38 more were hurt after a tourist bus carrying students collided with a KSRTC bus at Mangalam, close to the Vadakkenchery region of Palakkad.

The horrifying traffic collision happened when the tourist bus hit the KSRTC (Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation) bus from behind. While the KSRTC bus was travelling to Coimbatore, the tourist bus carrying Baselios Vidhyanikethan School children and faculty was travelling from Ernakulam to Ooty. Five kids, one instructor, and three KSRTC bus passengers were among the deceased.

38 people have been admitted to the hospital.

“Five people sustained serious injuries, but they are said to be out of danger,” Rajesh said.

More information is awaited.

In a previous incident in Uttarakhand, the Pauri Garhwal bus accident resulted in up to 32 fatalities and eighteen injuries, according to information provided to the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) on October 4.

The chief minister, Pushkar Singh Dhami, pledged financial support to the families of those killed in the disasters in Pauri Garhwal and Uttarkashi.

Earlier on October 3, a bus carrying a wedding procession of 50 people in Uttarakhand’s Pauri Garhwal district crashed into a gorge close to Simdi village.

“A wedding procession had left in a bus from Laldhang when an accident occurred. Information is being taken from the family members. A rescue operation is still underway by Pauri Police and SDRF at the spot,” said Haridwar SP City Swatantra Kumar Singh.

According to Kerala’s state health minister, Veena George, one new case of monkeypox has been confirmed in the state. A resident of Malappuram was reached on July 6 and was receiving care at the Manjri Medical College.

The monkeypox virus has been detected in a 35-year-old man who travelled to Kerala from the UAE earlier this month. He is the third person to have contracted the virus from either the nation or the state.

The minister added that everyone who has touched the patient directly is being strictly watched.

Monkeypox has been rapidly spreading throughout the world since early May.

According to the World Health Organisation, clinically less severe than smallpox, Monkeypox is a viral zoonosis (a virus that spreads from animals to people). It has symptoms that are comparable to those of smallpox. Monkeypox has replaced smallpox as the most significant orthopoxvirus for public health since smallpox was eradicated in 1980 and smallpox vaccinations were subsequently discontinued. Primarily affecting central and west Africa, Monkeypox has been spreading into cities and is frequently seen close to tropical rainforests. Numerous rodent species and non-human primates serve as hosts for animals.
