The video of her fearless act went viral, drawing praise online. Comments lauded her ‘skills’, ‘extreme courage’, and ‘indomitable spirit’.
</excerpt>

A stunning rescue by a Kerala forest officer has made waves on the internet, earning thumbs up from all over. While posting a video on X, user Rajan Medhekar posted a clip of Forest Beat Officer G S Roshni, Paruthipalli Range, bravely rescuing a giant king cobra with a snake-catching stick in a shallow water body.

The now widely-viewed video was shared with the caption: “Forest Beat Officer Roshni of Paruthipalli Range didn’t even blink after seeing this 18-foot long #KingCobra! Caught by her from the residential complex of Anchumaruthumoot, Peppara, Thiruvananthapuram, #Kerala, after locals who bath in the stream saw it today.”

Carmen’s Fearless Rescue

The dramatic video shows Roshni working with striking calmness and precision as she retrieves the massive snake, one of the world’s most venomous reptiles from the water. The rescue was conducted in a rural residential area of Thiruvananthapuram after locals spotted the giant cobra while bathing in the stream.

</excerpt>

Muslim communities in Kerala have reacted strongly to the proposal to introduce Zumba classes in schools, terming the move as against moral and cultural values. Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan launched the fitness classes to reduce student stress and curb rising drug abuse among youngsters.

Some Muslim organisations and leaders have opposed the move. They say the dance promotes vulgarity, violates student rights, and lacks proper educational consultation. The state education department has firmly defended the programme, calling it a step towards students physical and mental well-being.

Religious Leaders Raise Cultural Concerns

Abdussamad Pookkottur, the state secretary of Samastha Kerala Sunni Yuvajana Sangham (SYS), openly condemned Zumba in a Facebook post. He averred that Zumba “gainsays moral values.” TK Ashraf, general secretary of the Wisdom Islamic Organisation, was in line with this opinion. He averred that schools should provide academic excellence, not dance-based classes where children wear minimal clothing.

TK Ashraf also assured that he would neither let his son join nor conduct the programme as a teacher. He accepted the fact that a few may call it an old-school approach but remained resolute in his stance.

‘Don’t Force Vulgarity on Students’

Samastha Kerala Jamiyyathul Ulama leader Nassar Faizy Koodathai said further that such Zumba activities require little attire and cannot be imposed on students. He alleged that it was an infringement on the fundamental rights of students who do not want to display such open shows.

The Muslim Students’ Federation (MSF), which is associated with the Indian Union Muslim League, raised a doubt about the absence of formal consultations. MSF state president P K Navas wondered if the education department had carried out any studies or engaged in discussions with the stakeholders prior to the implementation.

Kerala Government Defends Mental Health Initiative

Despite the criticism, the education department in Kerala remained firm in its decision. It clarified that the move is part of the “With Childhood and Youth” anti-drug abuse campaign. According to the department, children who have mental issues are prone to falling into the drug syndicates.

Kerala Higher Education Minister R Bindhu urged critics to adapt to modern realities. “We are in 2025, not in the 19th century or medieval times,” she said. The state believes Zumba offers children a safe, positive outlet for their energy and emotions.

The Zumba row reflects a deeper conflict between cultural values and innovative health programs. As Kerala battles growing youth stress and drug abuse, the battle may get louder over what’s in and out of the classroom.

The IAF termed it a routine diversion and provided assistance. The jet had likely taken off from a nearby UK aircraft carrier and awaits refuelling.
</excerpt>

A British Navy F-35 stealth fighter aircraft had made an emergency landing at Kerala’s Thiruvananthapuram International Airport on Saturday evening after it is said to have run low on fuel during flight.

The plane, which is said to have departed from a UK warship that was anchored in adjoining waters, landed safely at 9:30 PM. The airport officials moved quickly by issuing an emergency so the cutting-edge combat aircraft could land safely.

The pilot reported running low on fuel and requested clearance to land. Everything was done rapidly and professionally,” an airport source informed PTI.

After approval from the concerned Central government ministries, the aircraft will be filled up with fuel, and like any foreign military aircraft overflying or landing in Indian airspace, will be required to do so. The plane is currently parked at the airport under tight security protocols.

Indian Air Force Reacts

The Indian Air Force (IAF) had clarified that the emergency landing was a standard diversion. “This is a normal diversional occurrence by an F-35. The IAF was aware in entirety and helped the aircraft for reasons of flight safety. All support is being given, and the IAF is working in coordination with all the concerned agencies,” read the IAF statement.

About the F-35 and India-UK Military Engagement

The F-35 Lightning II, produced by US defense giant Lockheed Martin, is one of the world’s most advanced fifth-generation fighter aircraft and is flown by a number of NATO allies, including the United Kingdom.

Only days earlier, the Indian Navy had carried out a Passage Exercise (PASSEX) with Britain’s Carrier Strike Group (UK CSG25) in the western Arabian Sea. According to a post by the UK CSG, “UK CSG25 accompanied the Indian Navy in an exercise in the western Arabian Sea.”

The two-day exercise included joint anti-submarine operations, tactical manoeuvres, control of helicopters, as well as professional exchanges between both navies’ personnel—emphasizing the deepening defence cooperation between India and the UK.

The situation has raised serious environmental concerns.

Three Crew Members Rescued at Last Moment

Three crew members who stayed on the vessel as per their company’s orders were finally rescued. Earlier, authorities had saved 21 out of 24 crew members. The rescued group included 20 Filipinos, one Russian, two Ukrainians, and one Georgian.

Ship Reported Severe Tilt After Departure

The ship had left Vizhinjam port on Friday and was on its way to Kochi when trouble began. The parent company told Indian officials that the vessel was tilting by 26 degrees and urgently asked for help.

Coast Guard Explains the Incident

Inspector General Bhisham Sharma from the Coast Guard (Western Region) said, “We thought the ship would stabilise but water ingress sank it.” He confirmed that the Indian Navy ship INS Sujata rescued the remaining three crew. “All crew remain safe and Coast Guard is assessing the situation and issuing an advisory to state authorities,” he added.

Floating Containers Pose New Risks

Sharma warned that many containers are now floating in the sea. “These containers can come ashore,” he said. He added that the Kerala Chief Secretary is leading a meeting to evaluate the potential threats.

Dangerous Cargo Onboard

The ship was carrying 640 containers, including 13 with hazardous materials. Among them, 12 containers held calcium carbide. The ship also had 84.44 metric tonnes of diesel in its fuel tanks.

Coast Guard Readies for Pollution Control

In an official statement, the Coast Guard said the Kerala coastline is rich in biodiversity and a popular tourist spot. “The Coast Guard has geared up pollution response preparedness and coordination with the state administration for all possible scenarios,” the statement said.

They also deployed aircraft equipped with advanced tools to detect oil spills. “Presently, no oil spill has been reported,” the Coast Guard added.

INS Sujata Saves Crew Under Tough Conditions

A defence spokesperson said INS Sujata recovered the last three crew members in a risky operation. The ship stayed near the sunken vessel as another ship from the same Liberian company arrived to help.

He said the Indian Navy and Coast Guard closely monitored the situation. Experts are now checking if the ship can be towed.

KSDMA Issues Public Warning

The Kerala State Disaster Management Authority (KSDMA) has warned people not to touch any cargo containers or oil that may wash up on the shore. It asked the public to inform the police immediately if they find anything unusual.

KSDMA said cargo and oil could reach the shore and that people might see oil films along some parts of the coastline.

India’s Offshore Mining Plan Faces Fierce Opposition: Will the Coastline Survive? | TDG Explainer

<excerpt>India’s pursuit of critical minerals through offshore mining in Kerala has sparked intense protests from the fishing community, who argue the project will harm vital marine ecosystems and their livelihoods.
</excerpt>

India’s administration is pushing aggressively for offshore mining as part of its strategy to secure critical minerals in Kollam, Kerala. The aim is to reduce dependence on foreign imports and strengthen domestic mining. The most significant step in this initiative is the historic auctioning of offshore mining rights, the first since India gained independence.

However, this move has faced strong opposition from Kerala’s fishing community, who argue it will harm both their livelihoods and the coastal ecosystem.

India’s Economic Push and Environmental Concerns

The offshore mining project is a cornerstone of India’s $1.8 billion National Critical Mineral Mission, launched in January. India aims to secure minerals like lithium, cobalt, nickel, and rare earth metals, vital for its green energy transition and manufacturing independence. These minerals are crucial not only for clean energy but also for producing consumer goods like electronics and air conditioners.

While the government justifies the project as a step toward national economic development, Kerala’s fishing communities see it differently. Fishermen worry that the mining could damage vital marine habitats, including coral reefs and sandbanks, which sustain local fisheries. The destruction of these ecosystems would directly threaten their livelihoods, as they depend heavily on Kerala’s marine resources for income and sustenance.

The Kerala Fisherfolk Resistance

Since the federal government announced the mining plan in November 2024, Kerala’s fishing community has staged numerous protests. These include several strikes and a statewide agitation in February 2025, supported by various stakeholders in the fishing industry. On March 12, a protest in New Delhi by the Kerala Fisheries Coordination Committee, along with opposition leaders, highlighted their concerns over the potential destruction of marine ecosystems.

A key concern for the fishermen is the proximity of the mining sites to crucial fishing areas. The mining areas in the Kollam district are close to key fishing grounds and coral reefs that generations of fishermen have relied on. These reefs support species vital to the local fishing industry, such as fish, shrimp, squid, and octopus. Local experts, including Professor Biju Kumar of the University of Kerala, warn that the mining will disrupt these ecosystems, causing a significant decline in fish populations.

The mining could also lead to increased coastal erosion. Kerala’s coastline is protected by rocky reefs that act as natural barriers, shielding the area from erosion and extreme weather. These reefs played a crucial role during the 2004 tsunami, preventing widespread destruction. Mining could damage or destroy these reefs, exposing the coast to further erosion and natural disasters.

Economic Growth vs. Environmental Protection

The debate over offshore mining in Kerala reflects the global challenge of balancing economic development with environmental conservation. The Indian government argues that securing minerals for its green energy transition and economic growth is crucial. To meet the growing demand for these minerals, India believes it must open up new mining areas, even offshore.

However, environmentalists, scientists, and local communities caution that rapid resource extraction can have severe long-term consequences. They warn that the environmental damage caused by offshore mining could be irreversible, leading to the collapse of marine ecosystems. Critics also argue that the long-term social and economic effects of these projects have not been fully evaluated, and the concerns of local communities have been disregarded.

Experts like Charles George, convenor of the Kerala Fisheries Coordination Committee, stress the importance of considering the long-term impact on the coastal ecosystem. The Kerala state government has already expressed its opposition to the project, passing a unanimous resolution in the state assembly against the federal government’s plans. This resolution underscores the strong local resistance to the project and raises concerns about balancing development with environmental sustainability.

The Wider Perspective: India’s Resource Strategy

India’s interest in offshore mining is part of a broader strategy to secure critical minerals for its clean energy infrastructure and reduce dependence on foreign countries, particularly China. As global demand for minerals like lithium and cobalt rises, India aims to establish a stable domestic supply to support its green transition and technological development.

However, the question remains: at what cost? While the government is eager to tap these resources for economic growth, the social and environmental costs must not be overlooked. Local communities and marine ecosystems should not bear the brunt of resource extraction.

Despite medical advice, she continued to avoid food, leading to severe health complications. Eating disorders like anorexia can have deadly consequences if left untreated.
</excerpt>

An 18-year-old girl from Kerala, identified as Sreenanda, tragically passed away due to anorexia. She had been battling the condition for several months, reportedly relying on YouTube diet videos and surviving on water for extended periods. Anorexia nervosa is an eating disorder where individuals obsess over their weight and diet, often perceiving themselves as overweight even when they have a thin physique.

Sreenanda, from Koothuparamba in Kannur, was said to have been struggling with anorexia for about 5 to 6 months. She stopped eating properly and concealed this from her family. Her health worsened as she survived mostly on hot water. After a visit to the hospital, doctors advised her family to seek psychiatric help and ensure she ate adequately. Despite these interventions, her condition deteriorated.

Around two weeks ago, Sreenanda’s blood sugar levels dropped, and she began having difficulty breathing, leading to her hospitalization at Thalaserry Co-operative Hospital. She was admitted to the ICU, weighing only 24 kg. Despite efforts to stabilize her, including ventilator support, she tragically passed away due to the effects of anorexia.

Let’s understand eating disorders in detail:

What Are Eating Disorders?

Eating disorders are serious behavioral conditions marked by unhealthy relationships with food, body image, and weight. They can cause severe physical, psychological, and social harm. Types include anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, binge eating disorder, avoidant restrictive food intake disorder, pica, and rumination disorder.

Anorexia Nervosa: ED That Caused Death to Kerala Teen

Anorexia nervosa is a condition where individuals self-starve and experience significant weight loss, resulting in low body weight. It has the highest mortality rate among psychiatric conditions, only second to opioid use disorder. Anorexics typically have a body mass index (BMI) under 18.5.

The condition is driven by an intense fear of gaining weight or becoming fat, leading individuals to severely restrict their food intake and often exercise excessively. Some may also engage in binge eating and purging behaviors.

Symptoms include the cessation of menstrual periods, dizziness from dehydration, brittle hair and nails, cold intolerance, muscle weakness, heartburn, severe constipation, stress fractures, bone loss, and mental health issues such as depression, anxiety, and fatigue.

Other Types of Eating Disorders

Binge Eating Disorder:

Individuals experience episodes of binge eating large quantities of food, accompanied by feelings of loss of control. However, unlike bulimia nervosa, they do not engage in purging behaviors, which can lead to serious health issues such as obesity, diabetes, and cardiovascular diseases.

Bulimia Nervosa:

Those with bulimia nervosa alternate between extreme dieting and binge eating. After binge episodes, they use compensatory behaviors like vomiting, fasting, laxative misuse, or excessive exercise to avoid weight gain. This behavior is often hidden due to feelings of shame and embarrassment.

Final Thoughts

Eating disorders, like anorexia nervosa, are severe conditions that can devastate individuals’ lives. Early intervention, proper psychiatric care, and family support are crucial in preventing such tragedies. The death of Sreenanda serves as a stark reminder of the devastating effects of eating disorders and the importance of awareness, timely treatment, and support for those suffering from these conditions.

Sreenanda’s tragic death has raised concerns. The youth has been blindly following the hollow and shapeless ideologies of social media leading to drastic altercations. The idea of ‘fitting-in’ creates a homelessness in the minds of youngsters struggling to find their identity. Bullying, shame, comparison and what not affects the very core of the teenage mindset to take wrong decisions which can turn out to be deadly. The early stages of mental disroders in teens are usually manifested in the form of agitation, aggression, disconnection and loss of control on emotions. When overlooked, this can quickly lead to depression, anxiety, lack of self-worth and worse conditions such as eating disorders itself.

In the fragile years of a child, not only parents but every adult near the teen is responsible to them. it is important to notice the changing patterns and behavior of a child. With proper and immediate care and medical attention, many struggling teens can be saved at the early stage of mental disorders.

</excerpt>

The Kerala government, in response to a recent alarming report by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) on the increasing incidence of cancer in India, has launched a comprehensive year-long awareness campaign. The campaign, aimed at improving early cancer detection and spreading awareness about prevention and treatment, was officially inaugurated on February 4, 2025, coinciding with World Cancer Day. Kerala Health Minister Veena George expressed her concerns over the study’s findings, describing the situation as “alarming,” and emphasized the urgent need to address the growing cancer crisis in the state and across the country.

The ICMR report, which noted a startling statistic that three in five cancer patients in India die after being diagnosed, has raised serious concerns regarding the effectiveness of cancer detection, treatment, and overall healthcare infrastructure. In light of these alarming findings, Kerala’s state government has taken proactive measures to confront this crisis by launching a campaign that will span the entire year, aiming to create a significant impact on cancer awareness, early diagnosis, and better healthcare practices.

The Alarming ICMR Study

The ICMR study on cancer in India paints a grim picture of the country’s battle against the disease. The report highlights that a significant proportion of people diagnosed with cancer in India are likely to succumb to the disease, with three out of five diagnosed individuals dying within a few years. The study also revealed that many cases of cancer are diagnosed too late, at stages when treatment options are limited and less effective, contributing to the high mortality rates associated with the disease.

India’s cancer burden is growing rapidly, with the number of diagnosed cases expected to rise sharply over the next few decades. According to the ICMR, the country is witnessing an alarming increase in both the incidence of cancer and its related mortality. The study attributes this rise to various factors, including changing lifestyle habits, environmental pollution, tobacco use, unhealthy diets, and the lack of early cancer screening programs, particularly in rural areas.

The findings of this report have triggered widespread concern among health experts, policymakers, and public health authorities. Cancer has already become one of the leading causes of death in India, and if current trends continue, the situation is expected to worsen in the coming years.

Kerala’s Response: A Year-Long Awareness Campaign

In response to the dire situation highlighted by the ICMR report, Kerala has taken the lead in addressing the cancer crisis with a well-organized year-long cancer awareness campaign. The state government’s initiative aims to educate the public about cancer prevention, the importance of early detection, and the various treatment options available. Kerala Health Minister Veena George has expressed her commitment to improving cancer awareness and ensuring that residents of Kerala receive timely medical attention and support.

The campaign, which began on February 4, 2025, aims to reach all segments of society, focusing on rural and underserved areas where access to healthcare services and cancer screening is limited. The Kerala government intends to utilize various media platforms, including television, radio, newspapers, and social media, to spread awareness about cancer-related issues. Additionally, public health officials and medical professionals will be conducting seminars, workshops, and health camps to educate the masses about the disease and its early warning signs.

The primary objective of the campaign is to reduce the number of cancer-related deaths by encouraging early detection, which has proven to significantly improve treatment outcomes. The campaign will also focus on educating the public about lifestyle changes that can help prevent cancer, such as adopting a healthy diet, quitting tobacco use, and staying physically active. The state government aims to make cancer prevention a key public health priority, with a focus on community-based interventions and outreach efforts.

Key Objectives of Kerala’s Cancer Awareness Campaign

Raising Awareness About Early Detection: One of the most critical aspects of the year-long campaign is to encourage people to undergo regular cancer screenings, particularly those who are at high risk of developing the disease. Early detection of cancer significantly increases the chances of successful treatment and survival. The campaign will emphasize the importance of timely medical checkups, particularly for breast, cervical, and oral cancers, which are prevalent in the region.

Educating the Public on Cancer Prevention: The campaign will educate the public about modifiable risk factors that contribute to cancer development. Lifestyle changes such as avoiding tobacco, reducing alcohol consumption, eating a balanced diet rich in fruits and vegetables, exercising regularly, and avoiding exposure to harmful chemicals and pollutants will be highlighted. The government also aims to raise awareness about the benefits of vaccination against cancer-causing viruses, such as the human papillomavirus (HPV), which is linked to cervical cancer.

Improving Healthcare Access: Another major focus of the campaign will be to ensure that cancer care is accessible to all citizens, particularly those living in remote areas where healthcare facilities are limited. The Kerala government plans to expand cancer screening programs, provide free or subsidized treatment options, and improve the availability of cancer drugs in government hospitals. The initiative also includes building stronger referral systems to connect patients with specialists and advanced treatment centers.

Supporting Cancer Patients and Families: The campaign will also focus on providing emotional and financial support to cancer patients and their families. The Kerala government plans to set up counseling services for cancer patients, organize support groups, and provide financial assistance for treatment. Additionally, the campaign will highlight the importance of mental health support for individuals diagnosed with cancer, as the psychological impact of a cancer diagnosis can be as debilitating as the physical effects of the disease.

Community Engagement and Partnerships: The year-long campaign will encourage community participation, with local leaders, NGOs, and health workers playing a pivotal role in spreading awareness about cancer prevention and early detection. The Kerala government has called for collaboration with educational institutions, private healthcare providers, and non-profit organizations to amplify the campaign’s reach and impact. Schools, colleges, and workplaces will be targeted to ensure that cancer awareness is embedded within communities.

Addressing the Rising Cancer Burden in Kerala

Kerala, known for its advanced healthcare system, has seen an increase in cancer incidence in recent years. The state has a relatively higher rate of cancer detection compared to many other parts of India, primarily due to better healthcare infrastructure and the availability of cancer screening services. However, the rising number of cancer cases poses a significant challenge for the state, particularly as many patients are diagnosed at advanced stages when treatment options are limited.

According to the Kerala State Cancer Registry, the most common types of cancer in the state include breast, oral, and cervical cancers. Kerala’s relatively high incidence of cancer is partly attributed to lifestyle factors such as tobacco use, alcohol consumption, and dietary patterns. Moreover, the state’s aging population is also a contributing factor, as the risk of developing cancer increases with age.

The Kerala government has been proactive in implementing policies to control the spread of cancer, including promoting tobacco cessation programs, encouraging healthy lifestyle changes, and investing in cancer treatment facilities. The year-long cancer awareness campaign is expected to build on these efforts by focusing on prevention, early detection, and access to treatment.

A Collective Effort for Cancer Control

The recent ICMR report on the cancer crisis in India has underscored the urgent need for a comprehensive and coordinated approach to cancer control. Kerala’s decision to launch a year-long awareness campaign is a timely and crucial step in addressing the growing cancer burden in the state and across the country. By emphasizing early detection, prevention, and improved access to treatment, the Kerala government aims to reduce the number of cancer-related deaths and improve the quality of life for those affected by the disease.

Cancer is a global health challenge, and India, with its vast population and diverse healthcare needs, must prioritize cancer prevention and treatment to effectively combat this deadly disease. Kerala’s initiative serves as a model for other states, demonstrating the importance of raising public awareness and fostering a collective effort to tackle the cancer crisis. As the campaign progresses over the next year, the hope is that more people will seek timely medical care, adopt healthier lifestyles, and ultimately contribute to a future where cancer is no longer a leading cause of death.

</excerpt>

The family of a 26-year-old YouTuber from Kerala’s Thrissur, arrested in an attempted murder case, has accused district jail officials of forcibly cutting his hair.

Muhammad Shaheen Shah, a resident of Eranellur in Thrissur and popularly known as ‘Manavalan’ (groom) on YouTube, was remanded to judicial custody for allegedly attempting to run over college students with a car, according to jail officials.

Following the incident, the accused was transferred to a mental health center after reportedly experiencing distress over the haircut.

Statement from Jail officials

A senior jail official stated that the haircut was carried out in accordance with regulations. The accused was transferred to a hospital in Thrissur after displaying signs of distress and is currently under observation, the official informed news agency PTI.

‘His hair and beard….’: Youtuber’s family

The family of the YouTuber alleged that his hair was forcibly cut within two hours of being remanded to custody, following which jail officials sent him to a mental health center.

According to the family, the next day, his hair and beard were entirely trimmed against his will. “His hair and beard were trimmed to such an extent that he has become unrecognisable. He had requested the officials to give him time to move an application against the cutting of his hair as he was expecting a role in a film and also due to his upcoming marriage. But they did not heed his request,” the family claimed.

They also dismissed the jail officials’ reported assertion that the YouTuber had consented to the haircut. “If that was the case, then they would not have sent complaints to the court, Kerala Chief Minister, and top police officers in the state,” they argued.

The Thrissur Police had apprehended him from Kodagu in Karnataka, where he had been hiding, on Tuesday. He had been on the run since the incident on April 19, 2024. He was subsequently presented before a local court, which remanded him to 14-day judicial custody at the Thrissur District Jail.

This traditional white and gold Kerala saree, a cherished symbol of the state’s cultural heritage, not only connected her to Kerala’s rich traditions but also drew attention for its timeless elegance.

The Kasavu saree, widely considered the cultural attire of Kerala, represents the strength and grace of Malayali women. It is central to important celebrations like Onam and other festive occasions. With its distinctive combination of white and gold, the saree is also associated with Kerala’s classical dance form, Mohiniyattam, further deepening its place in the state’s vibrant cultural fabric.

White and Gold Kasavu Sarees Symbolize…

The white and gold Kasavu saree holds profound significance in Kerala’s culture, particularly during the festival of Onam. The white color symbolizes purity, peace, and unity, reflecting the state’s diverse traditions. The understated elegance of the white saree mirrors Kerala’s natural beauty, representing the calm and harmonious spirit of its people. The golden borders add a sense of richness, signifying prosperity and celebration, making the Kasavu saree not just an outfit but a timeless expression of cultural pride.

The tradition of wearing white and gold is not exclusive to women in Kerala but extends to men as well. Men often wear mundus or dhotis, also edged with golden borders, showing respect for Kerala’s long-standing traditions and craftsmanship. These garments, typically worn during festivals like Onam, highlight the simplicity and grandeur of Kerala’s cultural legacy.

Kasavu Sarees: A Testament to Heritage

Kasavu sarees are an integral part of Kerala’s cultural identity, having evolved over centuries while retaining their traditional charm. Historically, these sarees were woven with pure gold threads, though modern versions now incorporate a blend of gold and copper-coated silver threads to make them more affordable.

The process of creating a Kasavu saree is labor-intensive and requires remarkable skill. Simple patterns can take three to five days to weave, while more intricate designs—often made for weddings—can take up to a month. The saree’s white base is said to symbolize Kerala’s untouched natural beauty, while the gold borders evoke the brilliant hues of the state’s golden sunsets. Depending on the complexity of the design and materials used, the price of a Kasavu saree can vary, making it not only a cultural treasure but also an artistic one.

</excerpt>

As the government prepares to introduce the Waqf (Amendment) Bill during the winter session of Parliament starting Monday, residents of Kochi have voiced their opposition through ongoing protests against the Act.

The Munambam community, in particular, has highlighted their struggles under the Waqf Act. Protesters claim that despite purchasing property between 1988 and 1993 and residing there for over 150 years, the Waqf Board has now asserted ownership. The community has called on the government to amend the Act and facilitate the return of their property.

“We are on the 33rd day of our protest and this is a fasting protest following the method of non-violence. Today, we brought an effigy of the Waqf Act. We are not against any particular religion, we are only against the Waqf Act which has to be amended… We need to amend the laws because we have to address certain issues which are deeply rooted in today’s India,” one protester told ANI.

Another protester elaborated on the community’s plight: “The Munambam people here are suffering due to this Act. In 1995, the act enabled the Waqf Board to claim this property. These fishermen have been living in this place for the last 150 years. They bought this property in 1988-1993. After 35 years of possessing this property, today they are asked to leave because the Waqf Board has entered this property into their registration. We expect that the Government will notice all these things and make the necessary changes to change the Waqf Act and enable us to reclaim this property.”

Meanwhile, the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, listed for consideration and passing during the session, is under review by a joint parliamentary committee (JPC) comprising members from both Houses. The JPC is expected to submit its report during the winter session, but opposition members are pushing for more time to complete the review.

The session, running from November 25 to December 20, includes 19 sittings. Since August 22, the JPC on the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2024, has held 25 meetings, reviewing inputs from six ministries and consulting 123 stakeholders, including representatives from six states, eight Waqf boards, and four minority commissions.

The Waqf Act of 1995, designed to regulate waqf properties, has faced allegations of mismanagement, corruption, and encroachment over the years. The proposed Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2024, aims to implement significant reforms, including digitisation of records, stricter audits, enhanced transparency, and legal mechanisms to reclaim illegally occupied properties. The JPC has been gathering input from government officials, legal experts, Waqf Board members, and community representatives to ensure comprehensive reforms are introduced.

Speaking at a press conference in Thiruvananthapuram, he confirmed the event would be fully supported by the state government. “All the financial assistance for organising this high-profile football event will be provided by the merchants of the state,” he said, expressing confidence in Kerala’s capacity to host this historic match.

Messi’s last appearance in India was in 2011 during an international friendly match between Argentina and Venezuela, which ended in a goalless draw. Known for his massive fan base in India, particularly in Kerala, Messi’s return will be a significant occasion in the state, which has long been passionate about football.

Messi, who moved to Major League Soccer’s Inter Miami in 2023 after leaving Paris Saint-Germain (PSG), has only expanded his fanbase in India, where many fans stay up late to follow his matches. His career, capped by winning the 2022 FIFA World Cup, has made him an icon in Kerala, where football culture is deeply rooted.

Despite achieving everything in his career, including the World Cup title, Messi continues to be an integral part of Argentina’s national team, playing a crucial role in World Cup qualifiers for the 2028 edition. His rival, Cristiano Ronaldo, also remains active with the Portuguese team, with both players hinting at another World Cup appearance in 2026.

</excerpt>

In a significant boost to Kerala’s tourism, a long-anticipated seaplane touched down at Bolgatty Waterdrome on Sunday evening. The ‘De Havilland Canada’ aircraft, which had taken off from Vijayawada and refueled at Cochin International Airport, received a water salute upon arrival. On Monday, Tourism Minister P A Mohamed Riyas inaugurated a trial seaplane service route between Bolgatty Palace and Mattupetty Dam, with Industries Minister P Rajeeve overseeing the ceremony.

This seaplane service is part of the Ministry of Civil Aviation’s (MoCA) Regional Connectivity Scheme (RCS)-UDAN, designed to improve access across Kerala’s four airports and waterways at subsidized rates, as reported by PTI.

Operated by a Switzerland-based private company in collaboration with SpiceJet, the ‘De Havilland Canada’ aircraft had previously completed test runs in Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka. Canadian pilots Daniel Montgomery and Rodger Brindger led the maiden flight to Kochi, accompanied by crew members Yogesh Garg, Sandeep Das, Sayyid Kamran Hussain, and Mohan Singh.

Key Details of the Seaplane Service:

The seaplane fleet will include small planes with seating capacities of 9, 15, 17, 20, and 30. Passengers will board from floating waterdromes, allowing easy access and subsidized fares for wider affordability.

Tourism Secretary K Biju highlighted that the seaplane service “offers an excellent opportunity for stakeholders,” including new tourism packages covering various destinations and creating employment opportunities within the sector.

Additional waterdromes may be established across prominent water bodies in districts such as Kovalam, Ashtamudi, Punnamada, Kumarakom, Vembanad, Malampuzha, and Bekal.

Officials from the Cochin Port Trust, the Indian Navy, and ‘De Havilland Canada’ have conducted logistical assessments, feasibility studies, and hydrographic surveys to ensure smooth operations.

This project aims to limit travel times between destinations to under 30 minutes, significantly reducing commute times between Kerala’s four international airports and remote areas, as per a press release.

It appears the professor’s appearance wasn’t entirely unplanned; the choreography, set to the hit Tamil song ‘Manasilaayo’ from Rajinikanth’s film ‘Vettaiyan’, may have been kept a surprise. Vineeth’s performance captivated the audience, with both students and teachers cheering him on, even drawing attention away from the 10 girls dancing with him.

The video went viral on Instagram, with users commenting on the fun and energy. One user remarked, “Where can I find this kind of HODs?” while another wrote, “Wow. This kind of dance is actually very cool. Nothing suggestive at all, unlike what some IIT-IIM students have had to offer.”

This isn’t the first time a faculty member from Kerala has gone viral for their dance performance. Earlier, Arunima Devasish, an assistant professor at St Teresa’s College in Ernakulam, also gained widespread attention for her dance to ‘Kaala Chashma’, earning the title of “Coolest Teacher.”

The decision followed requests from national and state parties, including Congress, BJP, BSP, and RLD, who raised concerns about low voter turnout due to regional festivities.

Festivals in Key Constituencies Prompt Date Shift

The Congress highlighted the “Kalpathi Ratholsavam” festival in Kerala’s 56-Palakkad constituency, running from November 13 to 15, which would affect voter participation. In Uttar Pradesh, BJP, BSP, and RLD noted that many people travel days in advance to celebrate Kartik Purnima. In Punjab, the Congress cited the 555th Prakash Parv of Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji on November 15, along with Akhand Path ceremonies beginning on November 13.

The EC underscored its commitment to facilitating voter participation, pointing to previous instances when polling dates were adjusted for similar reasons. These include the Punjab State Elections 2022, shifted for Shri Guru Ravidas Ji Jayanti, and the Manipur Assembly Elections 2022, where dates were adjusted to avoid a Sunday clash. Adjustments were also made in the Rajasthan Elections 2023 for Devuthan Ekadashi and in the Haryana elections for Asoj Amavasya.

Polling and Counting Dates Unchanged

The rescheduled bypolls will take place in one Kerala constituency, four in Punjab, and nine in Uttar Pradesh on November 20. The counting and poll completion dates remain unchanged, with results expected on November 23 and final completion by November 25.

The tragic incident occurred near Shoranur Railway Station on Saturday evening, as reported by the Railway police.

The New Delhi-Thiruvananthapuram train hit the workers at approximately 3:05 PM while they were clearing garbage from the railway tracks close to the Shoranur bridge, just a few kilometers from the station.

The workers, who were contracted by the Railways for sanitation tasks, were thrown off the track due to the force of the collision. Three bodies have been recovered from the scene, while efforts continue to locate the fourth worker, who is believed to have fallen into the Bharathapuzha River, according to police sources.

A team from the Railway Police has arrived at the site. An officer from the Shoranur Railway Police stated, “The workers may not have noticed the approaching train, which resulted in the accident, but further investigations are underway.”

</excerpt>

The Kerala Food Safety Department has mandated that food items, including fritters, be packaged exclusively in food-grade materials. In a recent notification, the Department has also banned the use of newspapers for wrapping fried snacks like samosas and pakoras.

This guideline was issued due to concerns that using newspaper for food packaging could expose the food to harmful chemicals, such as lead and ink. By utilizing appropriate packaging, the integrity of the food’s composition will be preserved.

The Food Safety Assistant Commissioner emphasized the importance of using food-grade containers for packaging and storing food as a safe practice. Additionally, the notification underscores the need for food entrepreneurs to comply with these packaging material guidelines and actively engage in the food safety process.

</excerpt>

Three individuals, including the Veerarkavu Temple Committee President, have been taken into custody following a fireworks accident that left 154 people injured during the Theyyam festival celebrations, according to Nileshwaram police on Tuesday.

The accident occurred during the Kaliyattam festival at the Anjootambalam Veerarkavu Temple in the early hours of Tuesday. Earlier, Kasargod MP Rajmohan Unnithan confirmed that the accident had resulted in 154 injuries at the festival in Veerarkavu Temple, located in Kerala’s Kasargod district.

“Shocking news came from Nileshwaram in Kasargod district last night. About 154 people have been injured and admitted to different hospitals. This Theyyam festival is a custom of the people of North Malabar. Every family is conducting the Theyyam. The Theyyam starts from this Veerarkavu Temple. </excerpt>

Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra conducted a roadshow in Kalpetta, Kerala, ahead of filing her nomination for the Wayanad Assembly by-polls. The event drew a large crowd of party leaders and supporters, marking her electoral debut.

Joining Priyanka at the roadshow was her brother, Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha. The siblings were seen waving and greeting enthusiastic party workers and supporters throughout the event. Notable attendees included Telangana Chief Minister K. Revanth Reddy, former Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel, and Congress General Secretary K.C. Venugopal.

During the roadshow, Priyanka shared a heartwarming moment with a young girl, highlighting her connection with the local community. Prior to the event, she signed her nomination papers at a resort, accompanied by local leaders and in the presence of key figures including Congress Parliamentary Party Chairperson Sonia Gandhi and Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge.

Following the roadshow, Priyanka Gandhi is set to address a public meeting at Gudalai, near the KWA Office in Kalpetta. The Wayanad seat was vacated by Rahul Gandhi, who retained the Rae Bareli Lok Sabha constituency.

In the upcoming by-polls, Priyanka Gandhi will face BJP candidate Navya Haridas and Left Democratic Front’s (LDF) candidate Sathyan Mokeri, with Haridas being a two-time Kozhikode Corporation councillor. If elected, Priyanka will become the third member of the Gandhi family to serve in Parliament.

Before entering active politics in 2019, Priyanka Gandhi was responsible for managing the Gandhi family’s traditional strongholds in Amethi and Rae Bareli. She was appointed as AICC General Secretary for eastern Uttar Pradesh in 2019 and later took on the role for the entire state in 2020. The Wayanad by-poll is scheduled for November 13.

</excerpt>

Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, who is set to make her electoral debut, will visit Kerala’s Wayanad on October 23 to file her nomination papers, sources said on Saturday.

According to top Congress sources, Priyanka Gandhi will be accompanied by her brother, the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi. The source added that before filing her nomination, Priyanka Gandhi will hold a mega roadshow in Wayanad.

In addition to the Gandhi siblings, several top Congress leaders will be present in Wayanad for the event.

Rahul Gandhi had previously won from both Wayanad and Uttar Pradesh’s Rae Bareli in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. However, he chose to represent Rae Bareli, as his mother and Congress Parliamentary Party chairperson, Sonia Gandhi, had vacated the seat after she moved to the Rajya Sabha from Rajasthan earlier this year.

Sonia Gandhi wrote an emotional letter to the people of Rae Bareli, expressing her gratitude for their support to the Gandhi family during difficult times.

During the Lok Sabha election campaign, Sonia Gandhi appealed to the people of Rae Bareli, stating that she was entrusting her son to them and asking them to take care of him. Both Rahul and Priyanka Gandhi stood by her side on stage as she made the emotional appeal.

In the previous elections, Rahul Gandhi had defeated CPI’s Annie Raja by a margin of 3.6 lakh votes. In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, he had defeated CPI’s PP Suneer by a margin of 4.31 lakh votes.

This time, Priyanka Gandhi will face CPI’s Satyam Mokeri, a national council member of the party. Mokeri had contested against Congress leader MI Shanavas in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections but lost by over 20,000 votes. A former three-term MLA from Nandapuram (1987–2001), Mokeri remains a prominent figure. The BJP is yet to announce its candidate for the Wayanad bypolls.

This is not the first time a member of the Gandhi family has contested from South India. In the 1978 bypolls, former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi contested from the Chikmagalur seat and won. In 1980, she contested from Medak, in the now Telangana region of Andhra Pradesh, and also won. She retained the Medak seat until her assassination in 1984, despite winning Rae Bareli.

In the 1999 Lok Sabha elections, Sonia Gandhi made her political debut, contesting from both Amethi and Bellary in Karnataka. She defeated BJP’s Sushma Swaraj in Bellary but chose to retain the family stronghold of Amethi until 2004 when she vacated the seat for her son, Rahul Gandhi, who made his political debut that year.

Rahul Gandhi won Amethi consecutively in 2004, 2009, and 2014 but lost to BJP’s Smriti Irani in 2019 by a margin of over 50,000 votes.

The bypolls in Wayanad are scheduled for November 13, with the counting of votes set for November 23.

Chaos Unfolds at the KFC Outlet

The viral video opens with chaos inside the fast-food restaurant, where a man is seen angrily confronting KFC employees. In a heated exchange, the customer pushes workers behind the counter, triggering the clash. As the situation intensifies, several workers, identifiable by their KFC-branded t-shirts bearing the slogan “It’s Finger Lickin’ Good,” jump into the fray.

The man, after initially being pushed back, charges at the workers once more, leading to a physical altercation. One of the employees is seen repeatedly slapping the customer, pushing him onto the food counter as onlookers, including customers and delivery personnel, record the scene on their phones.

Workers Take Control

In a particularly dramatic moment, a few KFC employees grab the customer by the neck and place him in a chokehold, while others continue to land blows. A man in a blue shirt attempts to intervene and separate the two sides but struggles to calm the situation. Eventually, the workers release the man, but tensions remain high, with both sides continuing to argue.

“Kerala Fight Club (KFC)”

The video, which has amassed over 2 lakh views on X (formerly Twitter), has sparked varied reactions. Some users expressed dismay over the aggressive behavior, while others found dark humor in the incident. One comment humorously dubbed the scene “Kerala Fight Club (KFC),” while another labeled it “full on kalesh,” referring to a chaotic fight.

Several comments also pointed out the irony of the situation, with one user noting, “Customer is getting smacked, and the staff is wearing T-shirts that say ‘Finger Lickin’ Good.’”

Divided Reactions

Opinions on the incident were divided. Some condemned the actions of both the customer and the staff, while others sympathized with the employees. One user shared a piece of advice, writing, “Never argue with people at their workplace, especially when they work in a group. I’ve had issues with @KFC_India, but they compensated properly. Patience is key.”

Another comment critiqued the broader issue in the hospitality industry, saying, “Nowadays the phrase ‘Customer is a guest’ has become ‘Customer is a clown.’”

As the video continues to gain traction online, it serves as a reminder of the importance of patience and calm in resolving disputes—especially in public settings.

The incident was captured on a dashcam and has since gone viral on social media, raising concerns about safety on the state’s highways.

The Kidnapping and Robbery

According to police officials, the robbery took place when the gang, traveling in multiple SUVs, cornered a car on a national highway. As the vehicle approached a section of the flyover under construction, the gang swiftly boxed it in, forcibly removing two men identified as Arun Sunny and Rojy Thomas from the car. The FIR, filed on September 22, details that the victims were initially assaulted before the gang stole their jewellery. After the robbery, the two men were later released unharmed.

Ongoing Investigation and Security Concerns

Authorities are treating this incident with urgency, as a Special Investigation Team (SIT) has been established to probe the case further. In a separate but related case, police reported another robbery in Thrissur, where a five-member gang used a gas cutter to steal ₹65 lakh in cash from three ATMs. To evade detection, the criminals painted over CCTV cameras, but surveillance footage from a nearby hotel captured images of the masked suspects fleeing the scene.

As the investigations unfold, police are urging the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity, highlighting the need for enhanced security measures on highways and in public spaces across the region.

</excerpt>

Indian filmmaker Payal Kapadia’s debut feature, All We Imagine As Light, is making the country proud by winning the Grand Prix at this year’s Cannes Film Festival. However, its release in India is limited – to selected theaters in Kerala only.

Why a Limited India Release

Barely qualifying for the requirement laid down by the Film Federation of India to be eligible for India’s official entry for the 97th Academy Awards in the Best International Film category, All We Imagine As Light is an attempt at documentary filmmaking but isn’t a good one. According to the criteria listed on the film body’s official website, “Films which are unreleased as of 10th September (last date of entry) who wish to apply for the Oscar Entry will have to submit an undertaking and confirmation from the production & distribution company that the said films will be released for a minimum of 7 days in theatres before the deadline of 30th September 2024.”

Spirit Media, a company founded by Telugu actor Rana Daggubati, has won the exclusive distribution rights of the movie in India. “We are proud to be able to bring this incredible film to audiences in India, starting with Kerala where the two leading characters of the story are from,” said Rana.

All We Imagine As Light is an official Indo-French co-production between Chalk and Cheese Films from India and Petit Chaos from France. However, France has already chosen Jacques Audiard’s Spanish-language musical crime comedy Emilia Perez, featuring Selena Gomez and Zoe Saldana, as its official Oscar choice.

About All We Imagine As Light

Payal, an alumnus from the Film & Television Institute of India, Pune, has set a record by being the first Indian filmmaker to win the Grand Prix at Cannes. Her film is also the first Indian entry that competes in the festival’s main competition in 30 years.

Also starring Kani Kusruti, Divya Prabha, and Chhaya Kadam, it’s the story of Mumbai nurse Prabha (Kani), who is uprooted from her life by a mysterious rice cooker provided by an estranged husband. Divya Prabha plays Anu, her roommate and colleague, looking for a private space in the city to meet her boyfriend. Prabha’s best friend Parvati (Chhaya) is facing eviction due to property developers.

</excerpt>

A suspected case of monkeypox has been reported in Kerala’s Malappuram district after a man, who recently returned from abroad, began showing symptoms of the disease. The man was initially admitted to a private hospital but was later transferred to the state-run Manjeri Medical College when doctors suspected monkeypox. His samples have been sent to Kozhikode Medical College for testing, and the results are awaited to confirm the strain.

If confirmed, this will be the second monkeypox case in the country. Earlier this week, a 26-year-old man in Haryana, who recently traveled from a country experiencing an outbreak, tested positive for the infection. He has been isolated in a facility, and his condition is stable. The patient has been confirmed to have the Clade II strain of the monkeypox virus.

The Centre has issued an advisory to all states and Union territories, urging them to screen and test suspected Mpox cases within the community and identify isolation facilities in hospitals for both suspected and confirmed patients. In a letter to the states, Union Health Secretary Apurva Chandra emphasized the importance of preventing panic. “While all States are requested to undertake appropriate activities to make communities aware about the disease, its mode of spread, need for timely reporting and preventive measures, it is crucial that any undue panic amongst the masses is prevented,” the advisory stated.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has declared Mpox a public health emergency and has prequalified the MVA-BN vaccine, developed by Bavarian Nordic A/S, as the first approved vaccine against monkeypox. “The prequalification approval is expected to facilitate timely and increased access to this vital product in communities with urgent need, to reduce transmission and help contain the outbreak,” the WHO said in an official statement.

There are two distinct strains of the virus—Clade I and Clade II. Clade I has been responsible for the recent surge in cases in Central and Eastern African countries, which WHO has categorized as a public health emergency. However, Clade II, which has been linked to the earlier 30 cases reported in India since July 2022, is not part of the current global health emergency. The Union Health Ministry confirmed that the recent cases are isolated and not linked to the global outbreak of Clade I. “This case is an isolated case, similar to the earlier 30 cases reported in India from July 2022 onwards, and is not a part of the current public health emergency (reported by WHO) which is regarding Clade I of Mpox,” the ministry stated.

A 49-year-old man named Suresh tragically lost his life in Walayar on Saturday after choking on idlis during a local Onam celebration eating contest. According to police reports, the competition was organized by a local club. Despite efforts by onlookers to remove the idlis from his throat, Suresh was pronounced dead upon arrival at a nearby hospital.

Details of the Incident

Witnesses revealed that the contest, which drew around 60 spectators, involved participants eating plain idlis without any accompaniments. While most participants ate one idli at a time, Suresh attempted to consume three idlis simultaneously. Shortly after, he began to feel unwell and choked, collapsing soon thereafter. Emergency efforts included a rushed trip to a local clinic and then to a private hospital, but doctors declared him deceased upon arrival.

Community Response

P B Gireesh, a local panchayat member from Pudur ward, expressed his shock at the incident. He noted that Suresh, a truck driver who lived with his mother, was an active community member involved in various Onam festivities. Gireesh described the scene, saying that the tragedy occurred amidst a series of local games and contests held for the festival.

Precautionary Health Advice

This incident echoes similar past cases where choking occurred due to improper food consumption. For instance, a previous case highlighted the importance of soaking chia seeds before eating them. Dr. Sermed Mezher emphasized that chia seeds should be hydrated for 20-30 minutes to prevent choking, ensuring they are safe for ingestion.

Legal and Medical Follow-Up

The Walayar Police have registered a case for unnatural death. The authorities are investigating the incident to ensure such tragic occurrences are prevented in future events.

Ather Energy, the electric two-wheeler manufacturer, recently found itself at the center of an online controversy after hosting an Onam celebration at its office. While the event, complete with a traditional sadya feast, was meant to bring festive joy, it quickly took a controversial turn. A social media post shared by Ather’s co-founder, Tarun Mehta, on X (formerly Twitter), revealed an unexpected addition to the iconic Kerala meal—chapati.

The Chapati Controversy

The post, featuring images of the sadya served during the celebration, drew sharp criticism online. Social media users were particularly offended by the presence of chapati, a flatbread commonly associated with North Indian cuisine, which many felt was out of place in the traditional vegetarian feast of Kerala’s biggest festival, Onam.

HAVE A LOOK AT THE VIRAL POST:

Onam at Ather office today!

Onashamsakal! pic.twitter.com/xelzpAl63Q

— Tarun Mehta (@tarunsmehta) September 11, 2024

The Sacred Tradition of Onam Sadya

For many Keralites, the sadya is more than just a meal—it represents tradition, culture, and togetherness. The Onam sadya, typically served on a banana leaf, includes a variety of dishes such as avial, pachadi, erissery, and payasam. The festival itself celebrates the mythical King Mahabali’s return and is deeply rooted in Kerala’s cultural heritage.

The inclusion of chapati was perceived by many as a cultural misstep, sparking debate over the sanctity of the traditional feast. The sadya holds symbolic importance, representing Kerala’s rich culinary history, and the introduction of a North Indian dish was seen by some as undermining this heritage.

Social Media Backlash

Mehta’s post was quickly noticed by users on X, many of whom voiced their displeasure. Prominent user Sidin Vadukut commented sharply, “If that is a chapati, then the rest of my life is dedicated to taking down this company. Apologies, you seem like nice people. But there is a limit. And you have crossed it.”

Another user expressed frustration at the blending of cultural cuisines, saying, “Vadaks (people from the north) stop butchering south Indian culture challenge.” Meanwhile, Lavanya, another user, lamented, “Why take something authentic and ruin it? No one would have had a problem if you guys had got a North Indian meal box for everyone! It’s a harvest festival after all.”

Devika Rajeevelse added her voice to the disapproval, stating, “Much as I love it when non-Malayalis celebrate Onam, I really must draw the line at rotis as part of sadya. Pliss stop this madness!”

The Cultural Significance of Onam Sadya

Onam, celebrated this year from September 6 to 15, is a cornerstone of Kerala’s identity. The grand feast, or sadya, typically consists of 24 to 28 dishes, each served in a specific order. It symbolizes abundance, community, and the harmony between nature and culture. For many, the Onam sadya represents more than just a meal; it is a celebration of prosperity, unity, and the spirit of sharing.

Ather Energy’s well-intentioned celebration inadvertently sparked a cultural debate, with many people feeling that tradition should be preserved in its purest form. The chapati controversy has once again highlighted the importance of respecting regional customs and traditions, especially when celebrating festivals deeply rooted in cultural significance.

</excerpt>

Former Congress party and PSC member Simi Rose Bell John was expelled from the party on Sunday due to her alleged derogatory remarks about women leaders. The decision was announced by Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) General Secretary M Liju, who stated that John’s accusations aimed to mentally harass and defame the party’s women leaders and workers, allegedly in coordination with political opponents.

Simi Rose Bell John had claimed that several women within the Congress faced exploitative behavior from male leaders, similar to the ‘casting couch’ scenario in the film industry. She questioned the qualifications of many women leaders and suggested their promotions should be assessed based on their political achievements and work in KSU and Mahila Congress.

Onam, primarily a harvest festival, is one of the most significant cultural celebrations in the region. The festival is observed during the Malayalam month of Chingam (August-September) and spans ten days, with Thiruvonam being the most important day. This year, Onam will be celebrated from September 6th to September 15th.

The Significance of Onam

Rooted in Hindu mythology, Onam commemorates the annual homecoming of the legendary King Mahabali. Mahabali was a just and beloved ruler, whose popularity and power alarmed the gods. To curb his influence, Lord Vishnu incarnated as Vamana, a dwarf Brahmin, and tricked Mahabali into relinquishing his kingdom. Consequently, Mahabali was sent to the netherworld but was granted permission to visit his subjects once a year. Onam marks the occasion of this visit, and the festival is celebrated to demonstrate that his people remain happy and prosperous. Central to Onam celebrations is the grand sadya feast, which honors King Mahabali and showcases Kerala’s rich culinary traditions.

What is Onam Sadya?

Onam Sadya, or Onasadya, is a traditional vegetarian feast served during the Onam festival. Presented on a banana leaf, this multi-course meal features over 25 distinct dishes. The preparation of this elaborate meal begins well in advance, fostering a sense of community and creating unforgettable memories. The feast includes a variety of dishes such as Kaaya Varuthatha (banana chips), Chenna Varuthathu (spiced fried yam slices), Choru (boiled rice), Sarkara Upperi (jaggery-coated banana chips), Pulinji (tamarind chutney), Ada Pradhaman, Paal Payasam, Kichadi (gourd in yogurt curry), Pachadi (a yogurt-based dish with pineapple or bitter gourd), Olan (ash gourd and beans in coconut milk), Theeyal (mixed vegetable curry), Avial (vegetables with coconut and yogurt), Kalan, Sambar, Rasam, Thoran, Mor Curry, buttermilk, and papad.

The Essence of Onam Sadya

The essence of Onam Sadya lies in the use of fresh ingredients, aromatic spices, and meticulous cooking techniques. A typical Sadya includes an assortment of dishes such as papad, banana chips, various pickles, avial, olan, kaalan, thoran, mezhukkupuratti, and dal topped with ghee, accompanied by rasam, kichadi, coconut chutney, and buttermilk. The meal culminates with Kerala’s quintessential dessert, Payasam. Beyond the impressive presentation on green banana leaves, the significance of this meal lies in the careful placement of each of the 25 dishes, each with its unique spot, reflecting the deep cultural heritage of Kerala.

</excerpt>

Samantha Prabhu recently praised the Hema Committee report, which has prompted several actors in Kerala to speak out about abuse within the industry. She expressed support for the WCC’s efforts in Kerala and called on the Telangana government to release a similar report on sexual harassment in the Telugu film industry.

In an Instagram story, Samantha stated, “We, the women of the Telugu film industry, welcome the Hema Committee report and applaud the persistent efforts of the WCC in Kerala, which has laid the path to this moment.”

She further urged, “We hereby urge the Telangana government to publish the submitted sub-committee report on sexual harassment, which can help frame government and industry policies, to establish a safe working environment for women in the TFI (Telugu Film Industry).”

The 235-page Justice Hema Committee report, finalized in 2019, highlights the dominance of 10-15 male producers, directors, and actors in the Malayalam film industry. Although the committee was established in 2017, legal challenges have prevented the report’s public release until now.

Samantha believes Tollywood would benefit from a similar initiative and supports creating a Kerala-style committee in Telangana.

Samantha was recently seen in ‘Kushi’ with Vijay Deverakonda and will appear in ‘Bangaram,’ announced on her birthday. She will also star in Raj and DK’s ‘Citadel: Honey Bunny,’ alongside Varun Dhawan, Kay Kay Menon, and Sikandar Kher, set to release in November.
