His dedication, captured in a viral video, has earned widespread admiration online for its display of unwavering faith and endurance.
</excerpt>

A 70-year-old pilgrim from Karnataka’s Kalaburagi district has finished a tremendous spiritual pilgrimage on foot to Uttarakhand’s Kedarnath Dham. The senior pilgrim, accompanied by a group of fellow pilgrims, initiated the padyatra on March 3 and arrived at the holy shrine on May 1, covering almost 2,200 miles in two months.

A footage of their arrival at the Kedarnath Temple, one of the four sacred Char Dham pilgrim destinations has gone viral on X (formerly Twitter) since then, eliciting praise for their unflinching faith and endurance. The devotees undertook the journey on foot, traversing plains, dense forests, and mountain ranges before arriving finally at their destination in the Garhwal Himalayas.

Upon the arrival of the group to the shrine, festivities within them were filled with passion and devotion. Speaking to the camera in the video, the aged pilgrim said, “When one is blessed by God, such a journey is possible,” highlighting their spiritual strength that allowed them to endure their ordeal.

Watch:

The video was uploaded on May 15 and has so far received more than 2 lakh views. Social media users were left touched by the commitment shown. “Pure bhakti alone can result in such success. Har Har Mahadev,” one user posted. Another said, “All of them will reach heaven directly after dying. That is for sure.”

Several others also shared the sentiment, terming it as a “pure faith journey” and terming it as amazing: “Bowing down to such unshakeable faith, these old devotees trekked 60 days from Karnataka to Kedarnath for Baba Kedar’s Darshan.”Another user merely captioned it as “Unmatched Devotion.”

What Makes Kedarnath Special

Located at over 11,700 feet above sea level, Kedarnath is one of India’s most sacred sites for pilgrimage. It contains the ancient Kedarnath Temple, a temple of Lord Shiva, and is one of the twelve Jyotirlingas. Situated amidst snow peaks and stunning landscapes, it draws thousands of pilgrims and trekkers each year as part of the Char Dham Yatra.

Earlier today, a helicopter being airlifted from Kedarnath was involved in an accident when its towing rope snapped, causing the helicopter to fall from mid-air. The incident was captured on camera, but it is not yet clear if there were any injuries.

According to visuals provided by sources, the helicopter fell after the rope attached to an MI-17 chopper broke. The aircraft crashed near the Mandakini River. This helicopter, operated by a private company, had been damaged during a previous landing at Kedarnath Dham.

The accident occurred amid the ongoing Kedarnath yatra, which has been disrupted by heavy rains in Uttarakhand. The route from Gaurikund to Kedarnath, which had been closed for 26 days due to rain damage, reopened on August 26. The heavy rainfall on July 31 led to significant landslides, stranding thousands of people and prompting a major rescue operation.

During the rescue, which lasted a week and was overseen by Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami, over 11,000 people, including pilgrims and locals, were evacuated with the help of the IAF’s Chinook and MI-17 helicopters, as well as private choppers.

Earlier, the Uttarakhand government issued a safety advisory for Chardham Yatra pilgrims due to anticipated heavy rainfall throughout the state. Authorities have urged devotees to postpone their trips until the weather conditions improve and to stay in secure locations.

Swami Avimukteshwaranand, Shankaracharya of Jyotirmath, questioned the legitimacy of building a Kedarnath temple in Delhi, citing the Shiv Puran: “The 12 Jyotirlingas are mentioned with specific names and locations. Kedarnath’s address is in the Himalayas, so how can it be in Delhi?”

Hinting at political motives, he said, “Political people are entering our religious places.” He also brought up allegations of a scam involving gold work inside the sanctum sanctorum of the Kedarnath temple.

“There is a gold scam in Kedarnath, why is that issue not raised? After doing a scam there, now Kedarnath will be built in Delhi? And then there will be another scam,” Swami Avimukteshwaranand stated.

Last year, a senior priest of the Kedarnath temple alleged a ₹125 crore scam in the gold layering work, claiming that brass was used instead of gold. The temple committee denied these allegations.

“228kgs of gold is missing from Kedarnath… No inquiry has started. Who is responsible for this? Now they are saying they will build a Kedarnath in Delhi, this cannot happen,” the Shankaracharya stated.

Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami took part in the bhoomi pujan in the Hiranki neighborhood, laying the foundation stone for the new Kedarnath temple.

Priests at the Kedarnath temple in Rudraprayag district did a protest in front of the shrine on Sunday. Under the banner of Kedar Sabha and supported by various associations, they raised slogans against the Uttarakhand state government and the chief minister.

A huge avalanche struck the mountains behind Uttarakhand’s revered Kedarnath Dham in the Rudraprayag district on Sunday morning, according to PTI reports, raising concerns for the safety of thousands of Hindu pilgrims currently undertaking the Char Dham yatra. The avalanche, captured on video by eyewitnesses, occurred around 5:30 am near the Gandhi Sarovar region, approximately 4 kilometres above the Kedarnath shrine. The footage depicts a massive mass of snow and debris cascading down the mountain slopes.

Fortunately, no casualties or damage to property have been reported thus far. The holy shrine of Kedarnath has experienced an unprecedented influx of devotees this year, with over 600,000 pilgrims visiting since its doors opened on May 10, as announced by the Uttarakhand government earlier this month.

Situated at an elevation of 3,500 metres amidst the majestic Himalayas, Kedarnath has been adorned with flowers and holy leaves to welcome the surging crowds of pilgrims. The Char Dham yatra, encompassing visits to Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath, and Badrinath, persists despite the region’s harsh climatic conditions, with temperatures ranging from 0 to 3 degrees Celsius during the day and dropping below freezing at night.

Avalanches, such as the one near Kedarnath, are common in mountainous regions like the Himalayas, characterized by steep slopes and accumulations of snow. They can reach speeds of up to 320 kilometres per hour and exert tremendous force, ranging in size from small slides to massive flows of snow, ice, rocks, and debris that pose significant risks to life and property.

The pilgrimage continues amid these challenges, underscoring the devotion and resilience of the pilgrims despite the natural hazards inherent to the Himalayan terrain.

</excerpt>

Sara Ali Khan’s debut film, Kedarnath, holds a special place in her heart, largely due to her first co-star, the late Sushant Singh Rajput. In a heartfelt interview with Mid-Day, Sara became emotional as she reminisced about her time on set with Sushant, crediting him for much of the love and acclaim she received for the film.

Reflecting on her experiences while filming Kedarnath, Sara shared several cherished memories. “There are so many,” she said. “One time, Gattu sir (director Abhishek Kapoor) was in a rush. Sushant had worked with him before, so I turned to Sushant and said, ‘I don’t know how to do this, there’s this line, just show me.’ He demonstrated, and I just copied him.”

Sara acknowledged Sushant’s influence on her, saying, “Being able to speak Hindi the way I do, being as curious as I am, so much of it is because of Sushant. Any love I’ve received for Kedarnath, and it’s a lot, is all thanks to him.” She struggled to hold back tears as she spoke. Sushant Singh Rajput tragically passed away on June 14, 2020, in Mumbai.

Kedarnath, released in 2018, featured Sushant as a ‘pithu’ at the sacred Kedarnath shrine and depicted the devastating flash floods in Uttarakhand in June 2013. Directed by Abhishek Kapoor, the film successfully combined romance and drama, earning significant box office success.

Looking ahead, Sara Ali Khan was recently seen in Ae Watan Mere Watan, where she portrayed Usha Mehta, a prominent figure in India’s freedom struggle. Her upcoming project is Anurag Basu’s Metro…In Dino, co-starring Aditya Roy Kapur and featuring an ensemble cast including Pankaj Tripathi, Ali Fazal, Fatima Sana Shaikh, Anupam Kher, Neena Gupta, and Konkona Sen Sharma. The film is set to hit theaters in November this year.

As Sara continues her journey in the film industry, her reflections on Kedarnath and her time with Sushant Singh Rajput remain poignant reminders of her beginnings and the indelible impact of her late co-star.

According to an official statement from the Uttarakhand government, Ashok Kumar Pandey has been appointed at Badrinath, while Pankaj Kumar Upadhyay will be stationed at Kedarnath Temple as Yatra Magistrates. Their deployment is scheduled from May 26 to June 6, with the primary responsibility of maintaining peace, order, and facilitating smooth conduct of the Yatra.

The Char Dham Yatra has witnessed an unprecedented influx of pilgrims at the Yamunotri and Gangotri Dhams within the first 15 days of the pilgrimage season. On Friday alone, 9,812 pilgrims visited Yamunotri Dham, while 13,602 made their way to Gangotri Dham. These numbers mark a significant increase compared to previous years, with 3,63,537 visitors recorded at the two holy sites since the pilgrimage season commenced.

Despite the remarkable growth, the Char Dham Yatra has proceeded seamlessly, owing to meticulous planning and coordination by district authorities. District Magistrate Dr. Meherban Singh Bisht has played a pivotal role in ensuring the smooth operation of the pilgrimage, emphasizing the importance of tight travel arrangements and registration protocols to maintain organization and safety amidst the large crowds.

Efforts to manage the surge in pilgrims and vehicles have been effective, with measures such as vehicle management at holding points and one-way gates implemented to prevent congestion. Adjustments in stopping places and timings have further streamlined traffic flow, ensuring a consistent pilgrimage experience.

The Char Dham Yatra, encompassing the sacred Hindu pilgrimage circuit of Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath, and Badrinath, began on May 10 this year. Uttarkashi, home to Yamunotri and Gangotri, has witnessed a significant influx of pilgrims, drawn by the spiritual significance of these revered sites, particularly the River Yamuna originating from the Yamunotri Glacier.

As the pilgrimage season peaks in Uttarakhand, the Char Dham Yatra continues to attract devotees annually during the summer months, reinforcing the region’s status as a focal point of devotion and spiritual significance for millions of pilgrims.

Starting in Uttarakhand on May 10, the pilgrimage saw bustling activity across all three Dhams—Kedarnath, Gangotri, and Yamunotri. Under Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami’s directives, comprehensive arrangements were made to ensure smooth operations at Kedarnath Dham, including its footpaths, highways, and helipads. A dedicated Yatra Control Room, equipped with CCTV surveillance, operates round-the-clock, promptly addressing passenger concerns lodged on the helpline.

Supervised by the Chief Minister, approximately 125 CCTV cameras were strategically installed to monitor devotee movement during the yatra. There’s a heightened focus on cleanliness and healthcare at Kedarnath, with increased sanitation personnel deployed this year. Essential amenities such as drinking water points and health camps are strategically placed along the travel route to cater to devotees’ needs promptly. Government officials remain vigilant throughout the journey to preempt any potential disruptions.

The pilgrimage season commenced with rituals dedicated to Prime Minister Modi at Kedarnath Dham, with Chief Minister Dhami leading the inaugural puja, invoking safe travels and spiritual fulfilment for all pilgrims. As the gates of Baba Kedarnath Dham opened amidst sacred chants, devotees resonated with fervent cries of ‘Har Har Mahadev,’ embarking on a divine odyssey. Adorned with 40 quintals of petals, Kedarnath exuded celestial allure, beckoning countless devotees to its divine embrace.

The Char Dham Yatra, steeped in profound Hindu spiritual significance, offers a journey of devotion and introspection through Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath, and Badrinath, culminating in spiritual rejuvenation and divine communion.

He emphasized the profound spiritual and cultural experience that the pilgrimage offers, revitalizing the faith and devotion of the participants.

This year’s Char Dham Yatra is marked by the reopening of Kedarnath Dham after a six-month closure. The pilgrimage season commenced with the ceremonial reopening of the shrine, with the first puja dedicated to Prime Minister Modi, signifying the official start of the pilgrimage.

Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami, partaking in the ceremonial rituals, extended warm greetings to all pilgrims and prayed for their safety and fulfilling journey throughout the Char Dham Yatra. He highlighted the significant efforts undertaken for the redevelopment of Baba Kedar temple in phases under PM Modi’s leadership.

The doors of Kedarnath, Gangotri, and Yamunotri were opened on the auspicious occasion of Akshay Tritiya, while Badrinath Dham’s doors will open on May 12. These high-altitude shrines, closed during the winter months, witness a surge of devotees during the pilgrimage season, symbolizing the deep-rooted spiritual beliefs among Hindus.

The Char Dham Yatra holds immense importance in Hinduism, emphasizing the tradition of visiting these four holy sites in a clockwise direction as part of the spiritual journey. You were able to come out in a happy state even after such a long wait, and it is a matter of great happiness for me. I can’t even describe it in words.”
“It was Kedarnath Baba’s and Badrinath Ji’s grace; you are all well. You also showed great courage, and you encouraged each other. This is the biggest thing because, even while travelling together in a rail compartment sometimes difference occur. Despite that, you remained so patient. I used to keep taking in information continuously. I was also in constant touch with the Chief Minister. </excerpt>

On Sunday, the Uttarakhand government sent a warning asking pilgrims to exercise caution and begin their yatra in accordance with the weather forecast in light of recent rain and snowfall at Kedarnath Dham.

“It may be noted that intermittent rain and snowfall continue in Kedarnath Dham. All the devotees coming to Kedarnath Dham from the country and abroad have been informed by the government to check the weather forecast before going to Kedarnath Dham and have been asked to carry enough warm clothes,” the government stated.
“There was heavy snowfall in Kedarnath Dham yesterday. Pilgrims are requested to be alert and begin their yatra by looking at the weather,” said Uttarakhand DGP Ashok Kumar.

It has been said by the government that adequate health arrangements have been made on all the travel routes.
In light of the partial solar eclipse on Tuesday, the Kedarnath and Badrinath temple doors will stay closed.

The Shri Kedarnath-Badrinath Temple Committee’s chief administrative officer announced that puja will be held in the evening following the eclipse. The temple’s doors would be opened after the eclipse period, according to Ajendra Ajay, president of the Badrinath-Kedarnath Temple Committee.

Lt Gen (Retd) Gurmeet Singh, Governor of Uttarakhand, and Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami joined Prime Minister Narendra Modi in offering prayers at the Badrinath temple on Friday morning.

Prior to journeying to Badrinath, PM Modi visited Kedarnath Dham in Rudraprayag and offered prayers while dressed in a traditional pahadi costume called a Chola Dora that Himachali ladies gave him while he was on a visit to the region. Some of the most significant Hindu sites include Kedarnath and Badrinath.

Due to the partial solar eclipse, temples in Prayagraj are closed on Tuesday. In the Triveni Sangam, devotees could be seen taking a sacred bath.

This time, a day after the Diwali holiday, countries throughout the world will see a partial solar eclipse. The eclipse will start in the late afternoon before sunset and be visible in most places.

It is not advised to look at the eclipsed sun with your naked eye, even for a short period of time.

A solar eclipse takes place when the moon moves in front of the sun, blocking it from reaching the earth. As a result, the Earth is covered by the shadow of the moon, creating a solar eclipse.

The sun will still result in permanent eye damage and blindness even if the moon blocks out most of it.

In the country’s northwest, the Moon will completely block out the Sun during the total eclipse to a degree, obscuring it by 40–50%. In other regions of the country, the percentage coverage will be less than what is shown in the aforementioned data.

Uttarakhand’s Chamoli district’s Badrinath Dham welcomed Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday.

PM Modi travelled to Rudraprayag’s Kedarnath Dham before landing in Chamoli, where he performed prayers while dressed in a traditional pahadi outfit called a Chola Dora that Himachali ladies gave him while he was on the state’s tour. Governor Lt Gen (Retd) Gurmeet Singh and Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami welcomed PM Modi as he arrived at Dehradun’s Jolly Grant airport earlier in the day.

He then laid the cornerstone for the Kedarnath ropeway project before going to the Samadhi Sthal of Adi Guru Shankaracharya.

Additionally, he examined the state of the construction projects along Saraswati Asthapath and Mandakini Asthapath.

The Prime Minister is in the Himalayan state to dedicate construction projects totaling more than Rs 3,400 crore.

PM Modi is set to perform devotional services in Badrinath, review the status of the riverside development project, and then lay the cornerstone for the road and ropeway construction at Mana Village. He will assess how the arrival plaza and lakes are being developed.

The 9.7 km long Kedarnath ropeway will connect Gaurikund and Kedarnath, cutting the current travel time between the two locations from 6-7 hours to barely 30 minutes. Govindghat and Hemkund Sahib will be connected by the Hemkund ropeway. It will be around 12.4 km long and cut down the journey from more than a day to only a little over an hour. According to the PMO statement, this ropeway will also connect Ghangaria, which serves as the park’s entrance.

The ropeways are an environmentally friendly mode of transportation that will offer a safe, secure, and stable mode of transportation. They will be constructed at a total cost of about Rs 2,430 crore.

This significant infrastructural improvement will encourage religious travel, which in turn will stimulate regional economic growth and generate a number of job possibilities.

A foundation stone will also be placed during the visit for road widening projects estimated to cost Rs. 1000 crore. The two road widening projects—from Mana to Mana Pass (NH07) and from Joshimath to Malari (NH107B)—will be a further step in ensuring that our border regions have a last-mile all-weather road connection. These initiatives will improve connectivity while also being advantageous from a strategic standpoint.

Some of the most significant Hindu sites include Kedarnath and Badrinath.

Another draw to the region is Hemkund Sahib, a famed Sikh pilgrimage site. The connectivity projects are designed to make religious sites more accessible and to upgrade the foundational infrastructure.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to visit Uttrakhand this month. Ahead of his visit, state Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami inspected the ongoing works in Badrinath Dham on Wednesday.

PM Modi will visit Uttrakhand on October 21 and he will lay the foundation stone of connectivity projects worth around Rs 3,500 crore. During the inspection, the CM also offered prayers at the shrine.

“Work is going on swiftly on Badrinath Master Plan. We have made the target to finish all the work by December 2023. PM will arrive here (in the state) on Oct 21 and he will lay the foundation stone of a few roads and Hemkund Ropeway,” Dhami said.

PM Modi will address a public rally in Kedarnath and perform darshan and pooja at Shri Kedarnath Temple and at the Badrinath temple.

The ropeways are an environmentally friendly means of transportation that will offer a safe, secure, and stable mode of transportation. They will be created at a cumulative cost of about Rs 2430 crore. This significant infrastructural improvement will encourage religious travel, which in turn will stimulate regional economic growth and generate a number of job possibilities.

“During the visit, the foundation stone for road-widening projects estimated to cost $1 billion will also be placed. The two road widening projects—from Mana to Mana Pass (NH07) and from Joshimath to Malari (NH107B)—will be a further step in ensuring that our border regions have last-mile all-weather road connection. These projects will be useful from a strategic standpoint in addition to improving connectivity, “PMO released a statement.
