</excerpt>

Following Operation Sindoor, during the “Pak Benakaab”mission led by Mr. Sanjay Jha in Indonesia, senior Congress leader and former Foreign Minister, Mr. Salman Khurshid, said, “Abolishing Article 370 from Kashmir was the right move by the Modi government.” H e f u r t h e r s t a t e d that “removal of Article 370 has brought democratic progress and economic prosperity to Kashmir.” Abrogation of Article 370 on August 05, 2019 by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi was a historic and bold decision that affirms the unity of the country and is proving to be a milestone in the development of Jammu and Kashmir.

According to ancient beliefs, Kashmir is the land of Maharshi Kashyap and Mata Sati. During the reign of Emperor Ashoka and the Kushan dynasty, Buddhism had a significant influence in Kashmir. Under the rule of Emperor Lalitaditya, Kashmir expanded and the Sanskrit language received great honour. The Shankaracharya temple near Srinagar still commemorates the spiritual victory (digvijaya) of Jagadguru Shankaracharya.

Over time, due to conversions by Muslim invaders, the Muslim population in Kashmir increased. At the time of independence, like other princely states, the Maharaja of Kashmir, Hari Singh, merged the state of Kashmir with Bharat by signing the Instrument of Accession.

However, under pressure from Sheikh Abdullah, Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru made a shortsighted decision to enforce Article 370 in Kashmir—an action that created divisions in the unity and integrity of the country. Many leaders, including Bharat Ratna Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, opposed Nehru’s move. Dr. Shyama Prasad Mukherjee, then national president of the Bhartiya Jana Sangh, led a nationwide movement under the slogan “Ek Desh mein Do Vidhaan, Do Pradhaan, Do Nishaan nahin Chalenge.” Under this situation, Dr. Mukherjee sacrificed his life under mysterious circumstances in June 23, 1953. Since then, the Bhartiya Jana Sangh— and later the Bhartiya Janta Party—had the declared commitment of abrogating Article 370, which was fulfilled by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in his second term on August 05, 2019.

Following the abrogation of Article 370, due to the implementation of central government schemes dedicated to social and economic justice, the people of Kashmir—who had been previously excluded—began to benefit as well. Now, all Bhartiya citizens can purchase land in Kashmir. This has led to the registration of 500 properties and approximately Rs 3.5 thousand crore of real estate investment flowing into Kashmir.

The removal of the rule that deprived Kashmiri women of inheritance rights when they married outside Kashmir is a decisive step towards women’s empowerment. Additionally, 150,000 families displaced from Pakistan—including Valmiki, Scheduled Caste, and Scheduled Tribe refugees—have now gained full citizenship rights. Moreover, 35 Lakh people have received domicile certificates. Due to the implementation of education-related laws, over 10 Lakh children have received free education.

Economically Deprived sections, Scheduled Castes, and Scheduled Tribes are now eligible for reservations. Inclusion of new castes in the Other Backward Classes category and increasing quotas has proved to be a pivotal measure in uplifting disadvantaged communities. Due to industrial development, an investment of Rs 56,000 crore has been made, providing employment to approximately 80,000 people. Over 1,200 startups are now contributing to growth and job creation. Handicraft products made by artisans are finding new markets.

Following the abrogation of Article 370, work took place to repair and construct 10,000 km of roads. The Zoji La and Chenani–Nashri (Dr Shyama Prasad Mukherjee Tunnel) tunnels have shortened travel distances. The four-lane highway from Jammu to Srinagar is setting new standards in development. Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the much awaited bridge over the Chenab River, an engineering marvel and the tallest in the world— standing 359 meters above the river level, taller than Paris’s Eiffel Tower—with praise even from Chief Minister Omar Abdullah.

Under the Ayushman Bharat scheme, more than 13 Lakh people have received medical treatment. Formula car racing is now taking place in Kashmir. Jammu Kashmir’s Palli village has become Bharat’s first “carbon neutral panchayat.” Post- Article 370, peace returned to Kashmir, leading to a significant increase in tourism. According to official statistics, tourist numbers rose by 50% since 2019, reaching a total of approximately 2.5 crore tourists across the entire region.

Due to the policy of zero tolerance toward terrorism, terrorist incidents have consistently declined. The Union Home Minister, Shri Amit Shah, stated in Parliament that terrorist incidents have decreased by 92%. There has also been a steady decline in new terrorist recruitments. The number of pilgrims visiting the Vaishno Devi and Amarnath shrines continues to rise. The 65% voter turnout in the three-tier panchayat elections held after the abrogation of Article 370 is testimony to Kashmir’s prosperity—where 32,000 elected representatives are actively contributing to the development of their village panchayats.

Additionally, the Sharda Mata Temple established by Jagadguru Shankaracharya hosted Diwali and Saraswati pujan ceremonies—events that had not taken place there in 70 years. The Honourable Home Minister, Shri Amit Shah, officially reopened the temple onMarch 23, 2023. Regular worship has also resumed at the Kheer Bhawani Temple. To hoist the national flag at Lal Chowk – the historic site in Srinagar , the then BJP National President Shri Murli Manohar Joshi had to organise the “Bharat Ekta Yatra” from Kanyakumari to Kashmir. This pledge was fulfilled when the Tirangaa was hoisted under police protection on January 26, 1992.

Alongside Dr. Joshi, the Honourable Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi was a key associate in this resolve. Today, following the abrogation of Article 370, the national flag once again proudly flies at Lal Chowk. And not just at Lal Chowk— Kashmiris are celebrating national pride by hoisting the Tirangaa at their homes as well. The celebration of Shri Krishna Janmashtami, held in remembrance of Lord Krishna’s birth, was also joyously celebrated at Lal Chowk.

As a result of the abrogation of Article 370, Jammu & Kashmir is now scripting a saga of “Virasat se Vikas” under the leadership of Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi. Citizens in Pakistan administered Kashmir, impressed by Kashmir’s development journey, are eager to join hands with Bharat.

Terrorist incidents like the one in Pahalgam are malicious attempts to derail this journey of development . Bhartiya society, responding to such conspiracies, will once again stand with renewed pride—upholding the spirit of national unity and integrity. Over the past 11 years, the efforts led by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi have successfully instilled this sentiment in every Bhartiya. (Shiv Prakash is the National Jt. General Secretary (Org.) of the Bhartiya Janta Party)

</excerpt>

When British Raj ended in 1947, it left a divided subcontinent behind. India and Pakistan came into existence along with the Partition, and it resulted in widespread communal riots, mass migration, and the displacement of millions. One of the most disputed legacies of the division was the princely state of Jammu and Kashmir.

Princely states were, at the time of Partition, offered a choice to accede to India or Pakistan. Maharaja Hari Singh, who ruled Jammu and Kashmir, first wished to keep his state independent. Later, in October 1947, Pakistani tribal militias invaded Kashmir, when Hari Singh requested the assistance of India. In exchange, he agreed to the Instrument of Accession, under which Indian forces were flown into Kashmir. This act triggered the Kashmir dispute.

The First War and the UN Intervention

The First Indo-Pak War broke out in 1947-48 regarding control over Kashmir. The war ended in 1949 with a ceasefire brokered by the United Nations, leading to the region being partitioned along the Line of Control (LoC). India had control over about two-thirds of the region, while Pakistan had one-third, which it calls “Azad Jammu and Kashmir.”

The UN also advocated a plebiscite to decide the fate of Kashmir, but it never took place as there were disagreements regarding the conditions.

The Second, Third Wars Effecting Jammu and Kashmir

Kashmir was still at the focus of the 1965 Indo-Pak War when Pakistan had initiated Operation Gibraltar with the goal of infiltrating troops into Kashmir to foment rebellion. India responded with extensive military action. The war ended with the Tashkent Agreement, mediated by the Soviet Union.

India and Pakistan clashed again in 1971, primarily for East Pakistan (now Bangladesh). Although the conflict was not specifically about Kashmir, its consequences resulted in the Shimla Agreement, where both countries mutually agreed to settle their problems bilaterally, including Kashmir.

Kargil Conflict: The 1999 Flashpoint

In 1999, Pakistani troops and militants overran strategic heights in the Kargil sector. India launched Operation Vijay, pushing the intruders back. The war was a risky escalation since it came on the heels of nuclear tests in 1998 by both nations.

Kargil reaffirmed Kashmir’s place as an international hotbed and brought to light the nuclear danger.

Terrorism and the Emergence of Proxy War

From the late 1980s, Pakistan-sponsored militants and terror organizations such as Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) and Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) stepped up attacks in Indian-occupied Kashmir. Such significant events include the 2001 attack on the Indian Parliament and the 2008 Mumbai attacks.

India has repeatedly accused Pakistan of employing terrorism as a strategic instrument in Kashmir. Pakistan denies this, though international observers have attested to the existence of terror infrastructure across the line of control.

Article 370 Abrogation: A New Chapter in Jammu and Kashmir

In August 2019, India revoked Article 370, canceling Jammu and Kashmir’s special status and dividing it into two Union Territories. Pakistan condemned the action and reduced diplomatic ties.

India referred to it as a domestic integration process. The decision re-ignited tensions, escalated LoC hostilities, and concentrated international attention on the region.

Pahalgam Terror Attack Triggers Operation Sindoor

The battle raged again in 2025 when terrorists launched a brutal attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, killing 26 civilians. The Resistance Front (TRF), a proxy for Lashkar-e-Taiba, owned the attack. The attack fanned national indignation in India and demanded prompt military reprisal.

India initiated Operation Sindoor on 7th May 2025 against terror camps in Pakistan and PoK. Nine locations were identified and targeted by drone attacks and precision missiles. It was a quick and organized operation to destroy the command hubs responsible for the Pahalgam attack.

India and Pakistan traded heavy cross-border fire, including artillery and air support, for four days. The situation reached a dangerous level before a ceasefire was negotiated on May 10 through desperate diplomatic interventions.

After the ceasefire, Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif indicated a willingness to talk. But Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar made it clear: India would talk only if Pakistan demonstrated visible and verifiable action against terror outfits and surrendered wanted terrorists.

Strategic Importance of Kashmir

Kashmir’s geography provides it with unparalleled strategic importance. It shares borders with China, Pakistan, and Afghanistan, and dominates water sources critical to Pakistan’s agriculture, particularly the Indus River.

Dominion over Kashmir also carries symbolic importance. To India, it confirms sovereignty and integrity. To Pakistan, it is a cause linked to national identity and past claims.

The Road Ahead: Peace or Perpetual Conflict?

In spite of historical peace gestures such as trade and bus communications, trust still eludes. Any terror attack or military move negates tentative diplomatic gains.

Recent words, though, on both sides do provide a ray of hope. If Pakistan cracks down on terror organizations and India remains receptive to positive dialogue, then there can be a possibility of meaningful advancement.

Until then, Kashmir will continue to be the most tense flashpoint between two nuclear-armed neighbors, a place where history, politics, and ideology continue to clash with cataclysmic results.

</excerpt>

Terror hits tourist destination

Panic has hit Jammu and Kashmir after a terror attack in the picturesque town of Pahalgam killed at least 26 people, the majority tourists, on Tuesday. The attack, launched by four militants of The Resistance Front (TRF), a proxy of Lashkar-e-Toiba, has sent tourists into a state of panic and put a shadow on the coming Amarnath Yatra. The attackers targeted male tourists on the basis of religion in Baisaran meadow, a major tourist destination just 5 km from Pahalgam. At least 10 others were injured in the attack, including a Navy officer.

Tourists flee, plans cancelled

Following the incident, scores of tourists have begun leaving the region, while many who had planned visits are reconsidering. “We had planned to visit Pahalgam after Vaishno Devi, but we’re now heading back to Ahmedabad,” said Aman Sharma, a visitor from Gujarat, citing disturbing videos on social media.

Impact on the Amarnath Yatra

There are growing concerns about the safety of the Amarnath Yatra from July 3 to August 9. Pahalgam, one of the major base camps for the yearly pilgrimage, may suffer greatly from the spillover. Although the yatra is normally conducted with strict security, there is a concern among stakeholders that the attack will scare pilgrims away.

Inderjit Khajuria, Chairman of the All Jammu Hotels and Lodges Association, feels the attack was masterminded to discredit the pilgrimage and compromise tourism. “This attack may play spoilsport for the industry. One mishap negates the effort of six months,” he cautioned, calling on the Centre to leave the yatra’s security to the army.

Legal push for safety measures

Following the attack, a Public Interest Litigation in the Supreme Court has been moved seeking directives to implement stringent safety measures during the Amarnath Yatra.

A grim precedent

This is not the first instance that the pilgrimage has been attacked. Earlier attacks in 2000, 2001, 2002, and 2017 had claimed dozens of lives. Reminding people of past attacks, stakeholders now fear another steep decline in tourism a sector that had been gradually improving since the withdrawal of Article 370.

The attack, which is viewed as a direct threat to the government’s assertions of normalcy in the area, has put authorities and citizens on high alert as they prepare for the pilgrimage season.

Extra flights, along with waivers on rescheduling and cancellation fees, have been introduced by Air India, IndiGo, and Air India Express.

Special Flights for Affected Passengers

In response to the attack, Air India has announced that it will operate two additional flights from Srinagar to Delhi and Mumbai on Wednesday, April 23.
“In view of the prevailing situation, Air India will operate two additional flights from Srinagar to Delhi and Mumbai on Wednesday, April 23,” Air India stated in a post on X.

IndiGo, another leading airline, also stepped in to support affected travelers. An official from the airline confirmed that two extra flights would be added to their schedule, from Srinagar to Delhi and Mumbai.

Free Rescheduling and Refunds

This move is part of the airline’s effort to accommodate passengers impacted by the attack.

Air India further confirmed that its regular flights to and from Srinagar would continue as scheduled. “All our other flights to and from Srinagar will run as scheduled,” the airline confirmed.

IndiGo also announced that it would waive cancellation and rescheduling charges for passengers traveling to or from Srinagar during this difficult period. The airline has added two extra flights from Delhi and Mumbai to Srinagar in addition to its regular services.

Maharashtra Government’s Action

Meanwhile, Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde has been actively involved in supporting the victims’ families. Shinde spoke with Civil Aviation Minister K Rammohan Naidu about the incident, highlighting the urgent need for transportation arrangements to bring the bodies of the victims to Mumbai.

Shinde requested that special transport be arranged to bring the victims back to Mumbai as soon as possible, underlining the importance of swift action in this tragic situation.

Air India Express has also pledged its full support to passengers affected by the attack. The airline reiterated that passengers with confirmed bookings on flights to or from Srinagar until April 30, 2025, could reschedule their tickets without incurring extra charges or fare differences.

This collective effort by the airlines demonstrates their commitment to providing assistance to passengers during this tragic time.

</excerpt>

Srinagar April 18: This is truly a historic moment for the film fraternity as nearly after four decades Bollywood steps in Kashmir and Ground Zero’s special screening for the jawans marks the beginning.

A movie based on story of valour and patriotism of a BSF soldier casting Bollywood actor Imran Hashmi was screened for the first time in kashmir at Srinagar multiplex after four decades.

The movie titled Ground Zero revolving a story of a bsf soldier N.N Dubey depicts a message of fight against terrorism in kashmir the movie was shot in most volatile and once a terror hub down town area of north kashmir in Baramulla.

Pertinent to mention that the cinema halls in kashmir were shut and set ablaze in early 90’s by terrorists and remained under constant threats of separatists till abrogation of article 370. The valley witnessed the opening of first multiplex in Srinagar after post Abrogation in 2023. However there are efforts going on to revive old cinema halls that remained abandoned and deserted for last four decades.

The screening of Bollywood movies and the return of Bollywood movies to kashmir is evident to emergence of Naya Kashmir. In Ground Zero, Emraan Hashmi essays the role of Commandant Narendra Nath Dhar Dubey, who led a two year long investigation. Based on the BSF’s most daring operation in the last 50 years, the film brings to life a true story of service, sacrifice, and strength, set against the backdrop of Kashmir.

Today the significant screening of Bollywood movie Ground Zero based of life of security forces fighting terrorism sent out a message of prevailing peace and normalcy in kashmir. The screening was done in a Srinagar based multiplex where the actor imran Hashmi and Bollywood producer Farhan Akhtar were also present. The screening was held in a special presence of BSF Jawans and number of artists, personalities and nationalists. Imran Hashmi praised kashmir and expressed happiness over kashmir.

</excerpt>

Srinagar’s iconic Indira Gandhi Memorial Tulip Garden opened to the public on Wednesday, signaling the start of a new tourism season in Kashmir. Nestled between Dal Lake and the Zabarwan Hills, the garden is a major attraction for tourists visiting the region. Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah inaugurated the event, inviting visitors to witness the vibrant blooms.

History and Development of the Garden

The tulip garden was established in 2007 by Ghulam Nabi Azad, the then Chief Minister, to extend the tourist season in the Kashmir valley, which was earlier limited to summer and winter. Originally known as Siraj Bagh, the garden began with 50,000 tulip bulbs imported from The Netherlands and has since grown in popularity and scale.

New Varieties and Expansions

This year, the Floriculture Department introduced two new tulip varieties, taking the total number of flower varieties to 74, including hyacinths, daffodils, muscari, and cyclamens. Around 17 lakh tulip bulbs have been planted over an expansive area of 55 hectares, making it Asia’s largest tulip garden.

Visitor Footfall and Popularity

The garden attracts both domestic and international tourists. Last year, over 4.65 lakh visitors explored the tulip blooms, a significant increase compared to 3.65 lakh visitors in 2023. The phased planting of tulip bulbs ensures that the flowers remain in bloom for over a month, extending the tourist season.

Future Prospects

With nearly full capacity reached, officials aim to maintain and enhance the garden’s charm, ensuring it continues to attract millions of visitors annually.

Addressing discussions about BRICS nations moving away from the US dollar, Jaishankar dismissed claims of a unified policy to replace it. “I don’t think there’s any policy on our part to replace the dollar,” he clarified. He acknowledged the reality of economic multipolarity but underscored the dollar’s central role in global financial stability. He also noted that BRICS nations have differing views on the matter, with India prioritising its cooperation with the US.

However, he stressed the importance of mutual respect in diplomacy. “We want a relationship where our interests are respected, sensitivities are recognised, and it works for both of us,” he said, reaffirming India’s commitment to securing its strategic interests while maintaining stability.

He praised the Trump administration’s approach, which he said aligns with India’s interests, and highlighted the growing importance of the Quad alliance involving India, the US, Australia, and Japan. “There are no free riders involved,” he remarked. He also confirmed ongoing trade negotiations, with Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal currently in Washington for discussions on a potential bilateral trade pact.

</excerpt>

Prime Minister of Pakistan Shehbaz Sharif reiterated Pakistan’s commitment to offering moral, political, and diplomatic support to the people of Kashmir in their quest for self-determination. People celebrate January 5 as Right to Self-Determination Day. Sharif called for the United Nations (UN) to implement the 1949 resolution ensuring a free and impartial plebiscite in Jammu and Kashmir.

In a statement issued by the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO), Shehbaz Sharif highlighted the UN commitment to Kashmiri self-determination, a core principle enshrined in the UN Charter. He appealed to the UN General Assembly (UNGA) to live up to that promise and to take concrete action to ensure the Kashmiri people exercise their inalienable right to self-determination.

“The Kashmiri people have been deprived of this right for over seven decades,” the prime minister said.” “It is time for the international community, including the United Nations, to live up to their promises and take meaningful measures, enabling the people of Jammu and Kashmir to exercise their inalienable right to self-determination,” he said.”

Condemning Human Rights Violations

Shehbaz Sharif called on the global community to appeal for immediate respect for human rights across India’s Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir. He pleaded for the authorities to release political prisoners and restore essential freedoms to the general population in occupied Kashmir. Furthermore, the statement underscored India’s violations of the internationally disputed territory, highlighting that the country “continues to take multiple steps to consolidate its occupation of the of the Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK)”.

The statement pointed to India’s unilateral decision on August 5, 2019, to revoke Article 370 of its constitution. The move stripped the Muslim-majority territory of its special status, allowing non-residents to buy property and settle in the region. Critics see this as an effort to alter the demographic composition of Kashmir, reducing its Muslim majority.

“Through a series of illegal and unilateral actions taken since 5 August 2019, India is trying to alter the demographic and political structure of the disputed territory, aimed at transforming the majority Kashmiri people into a disempowered minority community, in their own homeland,” it said, adding that it was also “subjecting the Kashmiri people to wide-ranging gross, systematic human rights violations”.

“Pakistan reaffirms its strong resolve to continue extending its full moral, political and diplomatic support to the Kashmiri people, in their just struggle for realisation of their right to self-determination, as enshrined in the Charter and relevant resolutions of the UN, as well as in international law,” the statement added.

Zardari Echoes Support for Kashmir

President Asif Ali Zardari also reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to supporting the Kashmiri people. In a statement reported by state-owned Radio Pakistan, he criticized India’s decades-long denial of self-determination to the people of IIOJK.

“India has subjected Kashmiris to systemic oppression, violence, and brutalities for over seven decades,” Zardari said. “Pakistan will continue to stand with the Kashmiri people in their just struggle for self-determination.”

Renewing the Call for Justice

Right to Self-Determination Day statements from the leadership point towards Pakistan’s rigid stance on the Kashmir issue. In this context, Shehbaz Sharif and Asif Ali Zardari called for the global community to join hands in delivering justice to the people of Kashmir and putting an end to the prolonged agony faced by them. Furthermore, they reiterated that Pakistan stands firm in supporting the freedom movement and fundamental rights of Kashmiris, which are recognized internationally and through UN resolutions.

Kashmir experienced a fresh spell of snowfall on Sunday, with Srinagar and several parts of the valley waking up to a winter wonderland. The summer capital, however, continued to reel under a biting cold wave as the maximum temperature remained near freezing for the second consecutive day.

Snowfall was reported in the northern districts of Bandipora, Baramulla, and Kupwara, as well as parts of Budgam and Ganderbal in central Kashmir during the morning hours, according to officials. By evening, Srinagar and areas in south Kashmir also received fresh snow.

Mercury Dips Amid Intense Cold

Srinagar recorded a maximum temperature of 1.5°C on Sunday, slightly higher than Saturday’s 1.2°C but still well below normal. The night temperature settled at -2.5°C, a slight improvement from the previous night’s -2.2°C, according to the Meteorological Department.

In Kokernag, south Kashmir, temperatures plummeted to a bone-chilling -8.1°C, making it the coldest recorded place in the valley.

Other notable minimum temperatures included:

Gulmarg (a popular skiing destination): -4.0°C

Pahalgam (base camp for the Amarnath Yatra): -3.2°C

Chillai-Kalan’s Icy Grip

Kashmir remains under the icy embrace of Chillai-Kalan, the harshest 40-day period of winter, which began on December 21. Known for its sub-zero temperatures and frequent snowfall, this phase is vital for replenishing water reserves in the region.

Chillai-Kalan will continue until January 30, after which it will give way to Chillai-Khurd (20 days of milder cold) and Chillai-Bachha (10 days of baby cold).

Despite the frigid conditions, the snow-covered landscapes of Gulmarg and Pahalgam remain major attractions for tourists and adventure enthusiasts. With snow continuing to blanket the valley, Kashmir offers a picture-perfect winter getaway.

The Met Department has forecast more snow and sub-zero temperatures in the coming days, urging residents to take necessary precautions against the cold wave.

But, he decided to take a break sometime back to rejuvenate among the picturesque beauty of Kashmir. Under the morning veil of mist, Dosanjh went around visiting few of the prominent places – Adi Shankaracharya temple atop Zabarwan hills overlooking Dal Lake; Khanqah-e-Moulla mosque in Srinagar; and Gurudwara Chati Patshahi, Rainawari.

One of the most memorable moments of his journey came when he took a ride in a shikara on the serene waters of Dal Lake. As he floated, musician Adnan Bhai played folk songs on his Rabab, the traditional stringed instrument. During the ride, another shikara approached carrying a floating kahwa vendor named Mushtaq, who warmly greeted them, saying, “Welcome to Kashmir, I am ‘Dal Star’, you are global star Diljit!

Mushtaq shared the secret of his famous kahwa. This is a traditional tea made with almonds, cardamom, walnuts, honey, cinnamon, and saffron, among other ingredients. “Would you like it a little sweeter or not?” he asked as he poured the tea into the cups. “Less,” Diljit smiled and took a sip before exclaiming, “Bahut acha (very nice).

Kashmiri Kahwa is a special tea mix that puts together green tea leaves and saffron, spices, and honey. It gets brewed in a Samovar, a brass container. This drink is frequently consumed during the cold Kashmir winters and is based on Russian brewing traditions.

When Diljit was in Srinagar, he enjoyed another local staple, Girda bread, with more kahwa at Chai Jaai. Freshly baked and still steaming, these breads are often served with kahwa or the spicy pink noon chai, staples of Kashmiri cuisine.

Diljit has been sipping Kashmiri Kahwa, an invigorating brew loaded with antioxidants from green tea. It is the ideal pick-me-up for this artist as he gets set for the final performance of his Dil-Luminati tour on December 19th. Having dabbled in the culture of each place that he has visited- whether Kolkata’s coffee houses or Lucknow’s Makhan Malai – it seems that it has given him a rare, tasty glimpse into its cultural and culinary heritage.

The victims, who are from Uttar Pradesh, were targeted near the Mazahama graveyard on the banks of Nallah Sukhnag while working on a Jal Jeevan project initiated by the Jammu and Kashmir government.

One of the workers was hit by a bullet in the arm, while the other sustained an injury to his leg. Both were immediately rushed to Sub-District Hospital (SDH) Magam, where they are currently receiving treatment. Medical sources have confirmed that their conditions are stable.

Security forces launched an extensive search operation in and around Mazahama following the incident, deploying additional personnel to secure the area and locate the assailants. Area domination exercises and thorough searches along Nallah Sukhnag are ongoing as part of the heightened security measures.

The incident marks another targeted attack on non-local workers in Kashmir, raising security concerns for laborers involved in development projects across the region. Authorities are closely monitoring the situation, and further updates are awaited as search efforts continue.

</excerpt>

National Conference president and former MP Farooq Abdullah condemned recent terror attacks in Jammu and Kashmir, declaring on Friday that the region “will never become part of Pakistan.” Abdullah urged Pakistan to cease its backing of terrorism, emphasizing the toll it has taken on the lives of innocent people in Kashmir.

Call for Change and Diplomacy

Addressing Pakistan directly, Abdullah questioned the motives behind the violence, asking, “Why are they doing this? Is it to ruin our future?” He advised Pakistan to redirect its focus to domestic development rather than continuing its interference in Kashmir. “Pakistan is destroying itself and dragging us down as well,” he remarked, calling on Pakistan to adopt a “path of friendship” instead. He warned that continued support for terrorism would only further complicate the situation.

Recent Surge in Violence

In the past two weeks, a series of deadly attacks has led to the loss of 20 lives, including those of civilians, non-resident workers, a doctor, and Army porters. On October 24, the latest incident occurred in Gulmarg, where terrorists ambushed two Indian Army trucks near Botapathri, approximately 6 km from the popular tourist destination. The attack resulted in the deaths of three soldiers and two Army porters. The convoy, which included a Rashtriya Rifles unit and civilian porters, was en route to the Nagin post in the Afrawat range when it came under fire.

Earlier, on October 20, seven people, including a local doctor from Budgam and six workers from outside Kashmir, were killed in a terrorist attack on a construction site in Ganderbal district. This incident marked the most lethal assault on civilians since the June 9 attack in Reasi, in which nine pilgrims lost their lives after terrorists targeted their bus, causing it to plunge into a valley.

Abdullah’s statements reflect a long-standing call for peace, as he noted his three-decade-long observation of violence in the region. His message underscores an urgent appeal for diplomatic solutions to end the cycle of violence.

Terrorists Captured on CCTV Footage

CCTV footage revealed that the terrorists, armed with an American-made M4 carbine and an AK-47, spent seven minutes at the camp during the assault. While no cameras captured the initial attack, footage shows the gunmen entering another area and firing at workers before attacking the mess hall.

Preliminary investigations indicated that the attackers placed a grenade inside a parked vehicle before opening fire on its driver. Witnesses reported hearing what they initially thought were firecrackers, only to realize moments later that it was a terror attack. Security officials discovered 37 to 40 spent cartridges at the crime scene.

Investigations and Security Response

Following the attack, senior police officers, along with officials from the National Investigation Agency and other security agencies, arrived at the site to investigate. Investigations suggest that the attackers may have recently infiltrated the Valley through the Bandipora district. The local police have picked up several individuals for questioning but have yet to identify the attackers, believed to be foreign militants.

At the time of the assault, over 200 workers and officers were present at the campsite. Security forces, including top police, army, and CRPF officers, continue to monitor the situation closely and frequently visit the site as investigations continue.

While protests erupted in Shia-dominated regions like Kashmir and Iran, celebrating his legacy, others, including minority and opposition groups in the Middle East, rejoiced at his demise, viewing it as a potential blow to oppressive regimes.
</excerpt>

The death of Hezbollah’s longtime chief, Hassan Nasrallah, in Israeli airstrikes in Beirut has sparked mixed reactions within the Muslim populations around the world as they one part seems to be outraged by the event of his death and other seems to celebrate the moment siding with Israel.

Protests and Mourning in Kashmir and Iran

India seems to have its participation through Kashmir as protests erupted, demonstrating outrage, while Iran observed days of mourning. Prominent leaders like Mehbooba Mufti and Aga Syed Ruhullah Mehdi paused their election campaigns to honor Nasrallah, a figure revered in the Shia community. The protests in Kashmir were marked by anti-Israeli and anti-American chants, demonstrating solidarity with the people of Lebanon and Gaza during this tumultuous time. Mehbooba Mufti said “Cancelling my campaign tomorrow in solidarity with the martyrs of Lebanon & Gaza, especially Hassan Nasrallah. We stand with the people of Palestine & Lebanon in this hour of immense grief & exemplary resistance,” on X.

Celebration and Relief Among Others

Conversely, celebrations broke out among certain segments of society in the Middle East, including areas in Syria and parts of Iran, where individuals viewed Nasrallah’s death as a positive development. Many Syrian opposition supporters, who have suffered at the hands of Hezbollah during the civil war, expressed joy at the news, with celebrations even observed in the jihadist-controlled Idlib region. Videos circulated online showed people in both Syria and Iran toasting to Nasrallah’s demise, with some Iranian women openly celebrating his death as a blow to the Iranian regime that has long supported Hezbollah.

The Broader Context of Division

This stark divide of Shia-Sunni raises questions about underlying tensions within the Muslim world. While Nasrallah was a symbol of resistance for many Shias, others, including minorities in Lebanon and anti-government activists in Iran and Syria, saw his death as an opportunity for change. The mixed responses illustrate a complex interplay of sectarian and geopolitical sentiments that transcend the traditional Shia-Sunni divide, reflecting the discontent of various oppressed groups against the backdrop of a turbulent regional landscape.

</excerpt>

Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Friday addressed the United Nations General Assembly, yet again raking up the Kashmir issue and urging India to engage in dialogue for a peaceful resolution of the longstanding dispute.

Let me categorically say that Pakistan will respond the most resolutely to any Indian aggression. Durable peace, therefore has to be achieved by India by not only withdrawing its unilateral and illegal measures taken since 5th August, 2019 but by entering into a dialogue for the peaceful resolution of the Jammu and Kashmir dispute in accordance with the UN Security resolutions and the wishes of the Kashmiri people,” he asserted.

Sharif accused India of having “considerably increased its military capabilities mainly for use against Pakistan.” He further said, “It has been indulging in massive expansion of its military capabilities, which are essentially deployed against Pakistan. Its war doctrines envisage a surprise attack and a limited war under the nuclear overhang. Thoughtlessly, India spurned Pakistan’s proposals for mutual strategic restraint.”

Sharif referred to the abrogation of Article 370 and alleged that India has taken unilateral illegal actions since August 5, 2019. “Instead of moving towards peace, India has resiled from its commitments to implement the Security Council resolutions on Jammu and Kashmir. These resolutions mandate the people of Jammu and Kashmir to exercise their fundamental right to self-determination.”. Since the unilateral illegal measures by India on 5th August 2019 to enforce what the Indian leadership sincerely called a final solution for Jammu and Kashmir, he asserted.

India has wanted normal bilateral relations with Pakistan since the Pulwama attack in 2019 and, there too, it has stressed the need for a conducive environment free from terrorism. In fact, India has consistently raised concerns with respect to Pakistan’s support for cross-border terrorism, as well as continued saying that “terror and talks cannot go together.” India will be reacting to the address given by Pakistan at UNGA.

</excerpt>

Colonial legacies and geopolitical manoeuvring continue to fuel Kashmir’s unrest, as the region’s struggle for justice and self-determination persists.

Kashmir proposed standstill agreements with India and Pakistan in August 1947 to maintain existing arrangements pending a final decision. Pakistan agreed but India sought negotiations. Kashmir didn’t send a representative and no agreement with India was reached.

A legacy of colonialism

The Partition of British India in 1947, a violent and chaotic process that claimed over a million lives and displaced millions more, was the culmination of British colonialism’s exploitative policies. The hurried and arbitrary division of the subcontinent into India and Pakistan was driven not by the interests of the masses, but by the ruling elites and colonial administrators seeking to preserve their power and privileges. The fate of over 500 princely states, including Jammu and Kashmir, was left unresolved by the British, further exacerbating the chaos and violence of Partition.

Jammu and Kashmir, ruled by the autocratic Maharaja Hari Singh, was a microcosm of the contradictions that marked the broader subcontinental landscape. The state’s predominantly Muslim population had long suffered under the oppressive rule of a Hindu monarch, who, like many of his contemporaries, was more concerned with maintaining his personal power than addressing the needs and aspirations of his people. The state’s strategic location, nestled between the newly created dominions of India and Pakistan, made it a focal point of geopolitical tensions.

The dilemma faced by Jammu and Kashmir was emblematic of the broader failure of the princely states to act in the interests of their people. These states, remnants of feudalism and colonial patronage, were ill-equipped to navigate the demands of a rapidly changing political landscape. The Maharaja’s hesitation in deciding whether to accede to India or Pakistan was less about protecting the interests of his people and more about safeguarding his own rule in the face of mounting pressure.

The standstill agreement: A band-aid on a deep wound

The Standstill Agreement, signed between Jammu and Kashmir and Pakistan, was intended as a temporary measure to maintain administrative continuity in the immediate aftermath of Partition. The agreement, however, was a superficial solution that failed to address the deep-seated issues plaguing the region. It was, at best, a stopgap measure designed to buy time for the Maharaja while he deliberated over his next move. At worst, it was a cynical attempt by the ruling elite to maintain control over a restive population.

The agreement’s emphasis on maintaining the status quo ignored the urgent need for political and social reforms in Jammu and Kashmir. The state was plagued by widespread poverty, illiteracy, and economic exploitation, conditions that were exacerbated by decades of autocratic rule. The agreement did nothing to address these issues, nor did it offer any real solutions to the growing demand for self-determination among the state’s population.
For the people of Jammu and Kashmir, the Standstill Agreement was a symbol of the continued domination of their lives by external forces, be it the Maharaja, the British, or the new nation-states of India and Pakistan. It was a reminder that their aspirations for freedom and justice were secondary to the strategic calculations of those in power.

Elites in crisis

Maharaja Hari Singh: Maharaja Hari Singh, the architect of the Standstill Agreement, was a ruler deeply out of touch with the realities of his subjects. His decision to sign the agreement was driven by a desire to maintain his precarious hold on power rather than by any genuine concern for the welfare of the people of Jammu and Kashmir. His later decision to accede to India was similarly motivated by self-interest, as he sought military assistance to quell a popular uprising against his rule. The Maharaja’s actions throughout this period were marked by a consistent disregard for the democratic aspirations of his people, as evidenced by his statement: “The Standstill Agreement represents my commitment to ensure that no sudden or rash decisions disrupt the harmony of Jammu and Kashmir during this critical period.” However, this so-called “harmony” was nothing more than the suppression of popular discontent.

Mohammad Ali Jinnah: As the leader of the newly formed Pakistan, Mohammad Ali Jinnah viewed the Standstill Agreement as a tactical move to secure Pakistan’s interests in Jammu and Kashmir. However, Jinnah’s approach was emblematic of the narrow, sectarian nationalism that had driven the Partition in the first place. Jinnah’s statement, “The Standstill Agreement is a practical approach to ensure that the newly established state of Pakistan maintains its interests while we await the Maharaja’s final decision regarding the state’s future,” reflects the transactional nature of his politics. Jinnah’s vision for Pakistan was one that prioritised the interests of the Muslim elite over those of the broader working and peasant classes, a vision that ultimately failed to address the root causes of social and economic injustice in the region.

Jawaharlal Nehru: India’s first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, presented himself as a champion of secularism and democracy, yet his response to the Kashmir crisis revealed the contradictions in his own ideology. Nehru’s opposition to the Standstill Agreement was driven not by a desire to empower the people of Kashmir, but by a fear that Pakistan might gain control over the strategically important region. Nehru’s assertion that “While the Standstill Agreement may provide temporary relief, it does not address the fundamental question of Kashmir’s political alignment. The real issue is whether the people of Kashmir will have a say in their future” rings hollow when one considers that India’s own actions in Kashmir were guided by geopolitical considerations rather than a commitment to self-determination.

Sheikh Abdullah: Sheikh Abdullah, the leader of the National Conference and a prominent figure in Kashmiri politics, initially supported the Maharaja’s decision to sign the Standstill Agreement. However, Abdullah’s later disillusionment with both India and Pakistan highlights the limitations of nationalist politics in addressing the aspirations of the Kashmiri people. Abdullah’s statement, “The agreement might be seen as a means to delay the inevitable. The people of Kashmir are eager for clarity and a decision on their political future,” underscores the growing impatience among Kashmir’s population with the status quo. Yet, Abdullah’s own leadership would come under scrutiny as he navigated the complex and often contradictory demands of his position, ultimately leading to his imprisonment by the Indian government in 1953.

Region in perpetual crisis

The Standstill Agreement failed to prevent the outbreak of violence and conflict in Jammu and Kashmir. Just two months after its signing, the region was plunged into chaos as tribal militias from Pakistan, with the tacit support of the Pakistani government, launched an invasion of Kashmir. This invasion, motivated by a desire to force the Maharaja’s hand, led to widespread violence and displacement, further exacerbating the suffering of the Kashmiri people.

The tribal invasion can be seen as a manifestation of the class and sectarian conflicts that had been simmering in the region for decades. The invasion was not simply a matter of territorial ambition; it was a reflection of the deep-seated economic inequalities and social injustices that had been perpetuated by both the Maharaja’s regime and the broader structures of colonialism and feudalism.

The instrument of accession and the Indo-Pakistani war: Faced with the prospect of losing control over his state, Maharaja Hari Singh signed the Instrument of Accession on October 26, 1947, formally joining India. This decision, far from resolving the conflict, only deepened the divisions within Jammu and Kashmir. The subsequent Indo-Pakistani War of 1947-48, fought over the region, resulted in the establishment of the Line of Control (LoC), a de facto border that continues to divide Kashmir to this day.

For the Kashmiri people, the Instrument of Accession and the war that followed represented yet another betrayal by the ruling elites. The conflict, fought ostensibly in their name, did nothing to address the underlying issues of poverty, landlessness, and political disenfranchisement that had plagued the region for decades. Instead, it entrenched the power of the Indian and Pakistani states, both of which have continued to exploit Kashmir for their own strategic interests.

The UN intervention and the ceasefire: The UN’s intervention in the Kashmir conflict, culminating in the January 1, 1949, ceasefire, did little to resolve the deeper issues at play. The ceasefire, which established the Line of Control, effectively partitioned Jammu and Kashmir between India and Pakistan, creating a situation that has led to perpetual instability in the region. The UN’s role in the conflict, while often portrayed as neutral, was in reality shaped by the broader Cold War dynamics of the time, with both the United States and the Soviet Union seeking to influence the outcome in line with their own geopolitical interests.

A narrative of control

During the period of the Standstill Agreement, media coverage was heavily influenced by the dominant narratives of the time, which framed the conflict in Kashmir as a dispute between two newly formed nation-states. This framing obscured the voices and experiences of the Kashmiri people, who were often portrayed as passive subjects rather than active agents in their own history. The media’s focus on the geopolitical aspects of the conflict ignored the underlying social and economic issues that were driving the unrest in Kashmir.

The media’s role in shaping public perception of the Kashmir conflict reflects the broader dynamics of control and manipulation that characterise capitalist societies. The media, often controlled by corporate interests, tends to prioritise the perspectives of the ruling elites while marginalising the voices of the oppressed and exploited. In the case of Kashmir, this has meant that the aspirations of the Kashmiri people for self-determination and social justice have been consistently downplayed or ignored in favor of narratives that serve the interests of the Indian and Pakistani states.

A continuing struggle

The legacy of the Standstill Agreement is evident in the continued tension between India and Pakistan over Kashmir. The agreement, intended as a temporary solution, failed to address the deeper issues of sovereignty and national identity that have fueled the conflict for decades. The subsequent tribal invasion and the First Indo-Pakistani War, which followed the agreement, set the stage for the protracted dispute over Kashmir that remains unresolved to this day.

The Line of Control, established after the war, continues to be a contested boundary, with periodic skirmishes and military standoffs between India and Pakistan. The internal political landscape of Jammu and Kashmir has also been profoundly shaped by the events that followed the Standstill Agreement. The state’s accession to India, the rise of political figures like Sheikh Abdullah, and the revocation of Article 370 in 2019 are all part of the region’s complex and volatile history.

Internationally, the Standstill Agreement’s legacy is reflected in the ongoing global engagement with the Kashmir issue. The UN’s role in mediating the conflict and the continued diplomatic efforts by various nations highlight the international community’s concern over the potential for renewed violence in the region. However, these efforts have often been superficial, failing to address the root causes of the conflict or to challenge the underlying structures of power and inequality that perpetuate the crisis in Kashmir.

The way forward

The Standstill Agreement of 1947, far from being a mere footnote in history, represents a critical moment in the ongoing struggle for justice and self-determination in Kashmir. The agreement was emblematic of the broader failures of the post-colonial states of India and Pakistan to address the needs and aspirations of their people.

The way forward in Kashmir must involve a fundamental rethinking of the region’s political and social structures. This will require a commitment to addressing the underlying issues of poverty, inequality, and political disenfranchisement that have fueled the conflict for so long. It will also require a willingness to challenge the entrenched interests of the ruling elites in both India and Pakistan, as well as the international powers that have sought to manipulate the conflict for their own ends. Only by centering the voices and experiences of the Kashmiri people can a just and lasting solution to the conflict be found.

Abdul Rashid Dar, who sustained injuries from terrorist gunfire on Saturday, passed away in a Srinagar hospital. His death follows the earlier confirmation of two Army personnel who were martyred during the intense firefight in the Ahlan Gagarmandu forest area.

The encounter began on the evening of August 10, when a joint cordon and search operation by the Army and local police was launched in the remote Ahlan Gagarmandu forest area. This operation was triggered by intelligence reports suggesting the presence of terrorists in the high-altitude region, situated approximately 10,000 feet above sea level.

According to officials, the operation turned into a fierce battle when terrorists opened fire on the security forces. Six Army personnel and two civilians were injured during the confrontation. The two slain Army personnel have been identified as Havildar Dipak Kumar Yadav and Lance Naik Praveen Sharma. The injured soldiers were quickly transported to a nearby medical facility, but two succumbed to their injuries shortly after arrival.

In response to the escalating situation, additional reinforcements have been deployed to the area. The security forces are intensifying their efforts to locate and neutralize the terrorists, who remain at large despite the challenging terrain.

This incident is reminiscent of a similar operation in the Kokernag region last September, which resulted in the deaths of four security personnel, including Colonel Manpreet Singh and Major Ashish, along with Deputy SP Humayun Bhat. That operation also led to the neutralization of two terrorists, including a senior Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) commander.

Following a deadly encounter in Doda district on July 15, where four soldiers, including a captain, were martyred, security forces have heightened their operations in the Kokernag woods. It is suspected that the terrorists involved in the Anantnag encounter may have crossed over from Kishtwar district after escaping the confrontation in Doda.

On August 5, security agencies confirmed through both human and electronic intelligence that the terrorists responsible for the Doda region violence had infiltrated the Kapran-Garol area in south Kashmir. The ongoing operation, which began on the night of August 9-10, involved tracking these terrorists to the mountainous terrain east of Kapran.

A Srinagar-based defense spokesperson detailed that suspicious activity was detected around 2 p.m. on August 10. The terrorists responded with indiscriminate and reckless firing, leading to injuries among two Army personnel and two nearby civilians. The terror background of the injured civilians is currently under investigation.

The spokesperson also noted the challenging conditions faced by security forces due to the region’s altitude, dense undergrowth, and rugged terrain. Despite these obstacles, operations continue as forces methodically pursue the terrorists.

</excerpt>

ON AUGUST 5, 2019 the Union Home Minister Amit Shah announced in Parliament about the abrogation of the Article 370, the temporary provision within the Indian Constitution that had given a special status to Jammu and Kashmir.

The abrogation brought about no domestic rebellion, no home-grown intifada on the streets of Kashmir. Protests, militancy, or terrorism was not prevented by even the harshest security clampdown of the 1990s. The relative tranquility in the valley is reflected in the huge surge in domestic tourists: from the super-luxury Khyber of Gulmarg to the cosier Dove Cottage of Srinagar, all accommodation is booked for the spring and the summer.
The security scenario has drastically improved. While 124 civilians were killed at the hands of the police and security forces during protests and stone-pelting incidents from 5.08.2016 to 5.08.2019, not a single such incident was reported in almost 5 years. Another outcome of the abrogation of article 370 is a considerable decline in both recruitment and annihilation of terrorists in 2023 compared to previous years. While 35 terrorists were slain in various operations by the security forces from January 1 to August 5 in 2023, the number was over 120 in the same period last year. In 2022, 186 terrorists including 56 foreigners were annihilated. The much dreaded Lal chowk, once the hot-bed of anti-India activities, teems with activities of tourists and locals even after 11 pm. It always wore a deserted look. Hindu religious processions have taken place regularly at Laal chowk since Aug, 2019. Cinema halls have reopened for the first time since 1989. Hurriyat and other secessionist groups have been banned under UAPA.

Dubai-based Emaar has become the first overseas company to invest in a mega-mall spread over 10 lakh square feet in Srinagar. It is a project of Rs 250 crore.
The improvement in security situation can be gauged from the fact that on August 3, 2023, hundreds of students, academicians, journalists, and people from different walks of life spoke about peace and nation building at a grand event held at a govt. degree college, Shopian. “ South Asian centre for Peace and People’s Empowerment’’ organized the event in collaboration with the college at Shopian, once the bastion for terrorists. The restoration of the administrative control is one of the best things that happened to Kashmir after the annulment of the article 370 . Investment of projects worth nearly Rs 25k crores are under execution in the UT while proposals to the tune of over Rs 80k crore are under process. Since independence only Rs 14k crore was invested by private parties in J and K. However, the UT has received investment proposals worth Rs 81, 122 crore from 2021 to 2023 after the abolition of the Article 370 and introduction of a new industrial development scheme. For establishing key units across both divisions of J & K, nearly 2250 acres of land have already been earmarked. The UT teemed with 1.88 crore tourists in 2023, up from 77 lakh in 2008. The administration predicts the tourists’ foot-fall to breach the 2 crore mark this year. Strike calls imposed by separatists in Kashmir find no takers anymore as the common man has started to reap the dividends of peace. Foreign delegates arrived at Sher-i-Kashmir international Conference Centre during G20 meetings. The three-day Tourism Working Group Meeting of G20 delegates in Srinagar on May 22, 2023, commenced with the side event on “Film Tourism for Economic and cultural preservation”. It was unanimously concurred by the participants that J-K was the ideal region to shoot films.
All India Women’s Cricket Championship was inaugurated in a Sports stadium at Doda. The ST community has been granted political reservation in Jammu and Kashmir. ST representatives have been elected in the DDC- District Development Council and BDC elections. Thousands of Dalits were granted their rights and domicile. More than 60 thousand west Pak refugees are granted their rights and domicile. ST status is granted to communities like Pahari, Padari and Gadda Brahmin. OBC community has been identified in J& K for the first time. The OBC is given their constitutional rights. People from the POJK displaced community whom the J& K govt. was denying domiciles were granted 25 thousand domiciles. In J&K, if a woman married outside the state, all her rights were forfeited. But women have got freedom in the truest sense. The District Development Council, Block Development Council and Gram Sabha democracy came at every level. All the provisions of the constitution have been implemented in J& K, including 890 provisions related to public welfare have been implemented. The Article 35A has been abolished.
Finally, it is time for the discourse to move “from being special” to the new narrative of “being equal”. Most residents and leaders of the state acknowledge that as an equal member of the Indian federal polity, they are entitled to enjoy greater freedom and rights than they did as a special state. Ipso facto, Tamil Nadu, Odisha or West Bengal is able to preserve its cultural identity, political space, and economic well-being much better than J&K was able to do as a special state of the Union.

</excerpt>

On the fifth anniversary of the abrogation of Articles 370 and 35(A), Prime Minister Narendra Modi described the event as a “watershed moment” in India’s history. He hailed the move as the beginning of a new era of progress and prosperity for Jammu and Kashmir, and Ladakh.

In a post on X, PM Modi stated, “Today, we mark five years since the Indian Parliament decided to abrogate Articles 370 and 35(A). This was a transformative step towards progress and prosperity in Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh.” He emphasized that this change has brought security, dignity, and opportunities for women, youth, marginalized, tribal, and backward communities who were previously deprived of development benefits.

Modi assured the people of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh that the BJP-led central government remains committed to their welfare. “Our government has worked hard to keep corruption at bay, which plagued J-K for decades. We will continue to address their needs and fulfill their aspirations,” he added.

In contrast, Indian National Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge criticized the central government’s handling of the abrogation. In a post on X, he claimed that the BJP’s actions neither respect “Kashmiriyat” nor uphold “Jamhuriyat” (democracy). He argued that instead of fostering integration and economic development, the region has experienced significant unrest.

Kharge highlighted that since 2019, there have been 683 fatal terror attacks, resulting in the deaths of 258 security personnel and 170 civilians. He noted that targeted killings of Kashmiri Pandits have increased, and many government positions remain unfilled.

He further criticized the slow progress of the New Industrial Policy and the PM’s Development Package, citing a decline in Jammu and Kashmir’s net state domestic product (NSDP) growth rate from 13.28% to 8.73% post-2019.

In August 2019, the Indian government revoked Article 370, which granted special status to Jammu and Kashmir, and reorganised the region into two Union Territories: Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh.

</excerpt>

Kashmir: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) celebrated the fifth anniversary of the abrogation of Articles 370 and 35A with widespread festivities across Jammu and Kashmir. This milestone marks the Indian government’s historic decision to revoke the region’s special status, a move that the BJP hails as a significant step towards national integration.

The BJP organized a series of events throughout Srinagar and other parts of the Kashmir Valley, where party workers and leaders came together in rallies, hoisting flags, and distributing sweets to mark the occasion. The celebrations were accompanied by speeches from prominent BJP leaders, who reiterated their belief that the abrogation has ushered in an era of peace, development, and prosperity in the region.

Altaf Thakur, a senior BJP leader and the party’s spokesperson in Jammu and Kashmir, emphasized the transformative impact of the decision. He pointed to the substantial progress made in various sectors, including infrastructure, education, and healthcare, attributing these improvements to the removal of the region’s special status. Thakur also underscored that the abrogation has reinforced national unity and integration.

“The abrogation of Articles 370 and 35A has closed the chapter on separatist activities, hartals, stone-pelting, and killings. It has paved the way for lasting peace and development,” Thakur stated during one of the rallies.

Since the abrogation, the central government has initiated numerous measures to boost development and attract investment in Jammu and Kashmir. Projects aimed at enhancing infrastructure, fostering educational opportunities, and improving healthcare services have been launched, reflecting the government’s commitment to the region’s progress.

Despite these claims, the move continues to evoke mixed reactions among political leaders and residents. Some view the changes as a positive shift towards integration and development, while others express concerns about the potential erosion of local identity and autonomy. Opposition parties in Jammu and Kashmir have been vocal in their criticism of the BJP’s celebrations. They argue that the abrogation has led to political and economic challenges, and they call for the restoration of statehood and democratic processes. These leaders urge the central government to engage with the local populace and address their grievances.

As the region reflects on the past five years, the debate over the abrogation of Articles 370 and 35A remains a contentious issue. While the BJP celebrates the perceived benefits and achievements, opposition voices continue to highlight the complexities and challenges that have emerged in the wake of this historic decision.

The heavy rainfall led to the blocking of the important Srinagar-Kargil road and the Srinagar-Sonamarg-Gumuri (SSG) road near Padawbal, where mud from a canal overflowed and covered the road.

Efforts to clear the roads are currently in progress. The cloudburst has also damaged paddy fields and trapped several vehicles in the debris.

Gulzar Ahmad, the Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC) of Ganderbal, stated, “The cloudburst happened late Sunday night. Although there is a lot of debris, we are thankful that no lives were lost.” He added that clearing the roads is a top priority and that the district police, administration, and private teams are working together to resolve the situation. Residents whose homes were affected have been rescued and moved to safer locations.

Authorities have advised people to avoid traveling on the affected roads until they are cleared.

In other news, search and rescue operations are ongoing in Samej village near Rampur in Shimla district, Himachal Pradesh, following severe cloudbursts. Himachal Pradesh minister Vikramaditya Singh reported that around 50 people are feared dead, though the exact number is still being confirmed.

In Uttarakhand, cloudbursts and landslides along the Kedarnath Yatra route have resulted in 15 fatalities. Over 1,500 pilgrims and locals have been rescued by NDRF and SDRF teams. Uttarakhand Disaster Management and Rehabilitation Secretary Vinod Kumar Suman said that a total of 9,099 people have been rescued from the Kedarnath Yatra route.

Historically responsible for security in the North East, Assam Rifles will be aligned with the deployment patterns of other paramilitary forces across the country, marking a significant shift in the force’s mandate.

Assam Rifles will take on a role similar to that of Rashtriya Rifles, focusing on hinterland security. This strategic move is expected to strengthen the security grid from the border to the hinterland in the Jammu region, enhancing overall stability and security.

Earlier, the government had decided to deploy 2,000 BSF troops and special forces jawans of the Indian Army in the Jammu region to flush out terrorists active in Jammu and Kashmir.
