</excerpt>

India on Friday hailed the valour of its soldiers in the Kargil conflict 25 years ago, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi issuing a stern message to Pakistan, saying it has been trying to stay relevant by using terrorism and proxy wars but all such terror attempts will be crushed with full force.

“Falsehood and terror were brought down to their knees by the truth in the 1999 war,” Modi stated, emphasising that Pakistan has not learned from its past mistakes.
“Today, I am speaking at a place from where the masters of terror can hear my voice directly. I want to tell these patrons of terrorism that their nefarious intentions will never succeed,” he said, addressing the gathering which included India’s top military officials.
Condemning terrorism, Modi asserted that Pakistan has always faced defeat and reiterated that the evil intentions of terrorists would never be fulfilled. “Our bravehearts will trample all the terror attempts,” he added.
Paying tribute to the soldiers who sacrificed their lives during the Kargil war, Modi remarked, “In Kargil, we not only won the war, we presented an incredible example of truth, restraint and strength.”

He underscored that Kargil Vijay Diwas serves as a reminder of the immortal sacrifices made for the nation. “The nation is forever indebted and deeply grateful to the mighty superheroes of our armed forces,” Modi said.

Various events were organised in states and at the Kargil War Memorial in Dras in Ladakh to mark the 25th Kargil Vijay Diwas. On July 26, 1999, the Indian Army announced the successful culmination of Operation Vijay, marking victory after a nearly three-month battle on the icy heights of Kargil in Ladakh. This day is observed as Kargil Vijay Diwas to commemorate India’s triumph over Pakistan.

President Droupadi Murmu said the Kargil Vijay Diwas is an occasion to pay tributes to the courage and extraordinary valour of the country’s armed forces.
“I pay tribute to each soldier who made the supreme sacrifice while protecting Mother India on the peaks of Kargil in 1999 and bow in reverence to their sacred memory. I am sure that all countrymen will draw inspiration from their sacrifice and valour. Jai Hind Jai Bharat!” she said in a post in Hindi on X.

A shepherd named Tashi Namgyal is believed to have reported the intrusion by Pakistani soldiers into Kargil on May 2, 1999. The Indian Army launched a fierce counter-assault, Operation Vijay, to push back the Pakistani forces that had stealthily occupied important heights in Ladakh. The war went on for nearly three months on the icy heights.
Reflecting on the Kargil war, Modi shared that he was fortunate to be with the soldiers during the conflict and praised their bravery in carrying out difficult operations at high altitudes. “I salute the brave sons of the country who made the supreme sacrifice to protect the motherland,” he said.

Modi also highlighted India’s progress post the abrogation of Article 370, which will mark five years on August 5. “Today’s Jammu and Kashmir is talking about a new future full of dreams,” he said, citing examples of development, including G20 meetings held in the union territory. “This heaven on earth is swiftly moving in the direction of peace and prosperity,” he added.

</excerpt>

Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge on Friday hit back at Prime Minister Narendra Modi over his comments on the grand old party on the ‘25 year of Kargil Vijay Diwas’ accusing him of doing petty politics and said no Prime Minister has ever done this before.
Hitting back at the Prime Minister, he also urged the government to scrap the Agnipath scheme as it has been opposed by sever quarters.

In a post on X, while slamming the Prime Minister, Kharge, who is also the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha said, “It is very unfortunate and deplorable that Prime Minister Narendra Modi ji is doing petty politics even on occasions like paying tribute to martyrs on Kargil Vijay Diwas.”

“No Prime Minister has ever done this before,” he said.
Taking a swipe at the Prime Minister, the Congress chief said, “Modi ji is saying that his government implemented the Agnipath scheme at the behest of the Army, this is a blatant lie and an unforgivable insult to our valiant Armed Forces.”

Training his guns, he said, “Modi ji, it is you who are spreading lies!” He said that former Army Chief (Retd.) General MM Naravane has said on record that 75 per cent of recruits were to be taken for permanency in the ‘Agnipath Scheme’ and 25 per cent of people were to be let go after four years. “But the Modi government did the opposite, and forcibly implemented this scheme for all three Armed Forces,” he said.He claimed that according to news reports, former Army Chief (Retd) General MM Naravane in his book which the Modi government, has stalled from being published, has also said, that the ‘Agnipath Scheme’ was shocking for the Army, and for the Navy and Air Force, it came like a “bolt out of the blue”.“Are we creating professional soldiers, only by 6 months of training? Soldiers join the Army out of patriotism, not to earn a living,” he said. Kharge also said that many retired officers have strongly criticised Agnipath and said that it is endangering National Security and the aspirations of the rural youth, demanding that this scheme should be completely scrapped.

</excerpt>

As India commemorates the 25th anniversary of the Kargil Vijay Diwas, the victory over Pakistan in the 1999 Kargil War, the significance of this day echoes through history. This year’s observance saw Prime Minister Narendra Modi leading tributes to the soldiers who secured India’s triumph. The Kargil conflict, marked by Pakistan’s strategic gamble along the Line of Control (LoC), offers crucial insights into the shifting dynamics of South Asian geopolitics.

Historical Context

Historically, Pakistan has relied on unconventional warfare tactics during heightened tensions with India. From the 1947-48 and 1965 conflicts, where irregular forces and covert operations were pivotal, to the Kargil War, these tactics have shaped Pakistan’s military strategy. The Kargil incursion represented a notable departure from previous patterns, occurring during a period of relatively stable diplomatic relations between Islamabad and New Delhi.

The Kargil operation was a strategic evolution in Pakistan’s approach, moving from traditional proxy warfare to direct military engagement. Unlike past strategies, which involved irregular forces, the Kargil intrusion saw regular Pakistani troops disguised as Mujahideen, echoing tactics used in Afghanistan. This shift highlighted Pakistan’s intent to adopt a more overt military strategy against India.

The motivations behind Pakistan’s decision to launch the Kargil operation were multifaceted. Strategically, Pakistan aimed to assert control over disputed areas, disrupt Indian logistics, and alter the status quo along the LoC. The move was intended to exert pressure on India’s critical National Highway 1 Alpha, vital for accessing the Siachen Glacier.

Domestically, the Kargil conflict served as a diversion from Pakistan’s internal issues. With economic challenges and political unrest, the war offered a way to rally national sentiment and shift focus from domestic troubles. Although then-Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has publicly denied knowledge of the Kargil plans, the timing and context suggest that the conflict was strategically leveraged to address internal governance issues.

Strategic Implications And International Reaction

The Kargil War reflected Pakistan’s deep-rooted insecurities and strategic posture in South Asia. Faced with India’s larger size and military capabilities, Pakistan’s actions in Kargil were seen as a statement of its security concerns and a bid to assert itself in the region. However, the conflict strained Pakistan’s international relations and drew global attention to the volatile India-Pakistan dynamic.

The war exposed Pakistan to diplomatic criticism and highlighted the need for effective conflict management. The international community, including the United States, intervened to urge restraint and de-escalation, criticizing Pakistan’s unilateral military actions. This international response underscored the disconnect between Pakistan’s military strategy and its diplomatic objectives.

Lessons And Future Dynamics

The Kargil War serves as a reminder of the risks associated with unilateral military actions and the importance of diplomatic engagement. Despite Pakistan’s strategic shift towards direct military confrontation, the outcome of the Kargil conflict solidified India’s position as the dominant yet responsible power in South Asia. The war also highlighted Pakistan’s isolation and the broader implications of its military strategies on regional stability.

In reflecting on the Kargil War, it’s clear that the conflict not only reshaped South Asian security dynamics but also provided valuable lessons on the interplay between military actions and diplomatic efforts. The legacy of Kargil continues to influence the geopolitical landscape, reminding both nations of the complex and enduring nature of their relationship.

</excerpt>

On the 25th anniversary of Kargil Vijay Diwas, Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited the Kargil War Memorial in Drass and launched the first blast of the Shinkun La Tunnel project, which will connect Himachal Pradesh and Ladakh year-round. During his visit, Modi took the opportunity to criticize the opposition for their criticism of the Agnipath scheme, accusing them of trying to weaken the Army.

In his speech at Drass, Modi paid tribute to the soldiers who died in the Kargil War, saying, “The sacrifices made for the nation are immortal. The names of those who gave their lives for national security will forever be remembered.”

He also harshly criticized Pakistan, stating that it has not learned from its past mistakes and continues to engage in terrorism and proxy wars. Modi warned, “Our bravehearts will crush terrorism, and the enemy will get a fitting response.”

Modi further attacked the opposition for misleading the youth about the Agnipath scheme, claiming they do not care about soldiers. He accused them of lying about the One Rank One Pension scheme and failing to build a war memorial or provide adequate bulletproof jackets for soldiers. “These are the people who tried to weaken our army,” he said.

Additionally, Modi praised the development in Ladakh and Jammu and Kashmir following the removal of Article 370. He noted the rapid growth in infrastructure and tourism, mentioning the reopening of a cinema hall in Kashmir and the first Tazia procession in Srinagar in over 35 years. “Our heaven on earth is moving towards peace and harmony,” he added.

PM Modi also inaugurated the first blast of the Shinkun La Tunnel, a strategic project aimed at providing all-weather connectivity between Ladakh and the rest of India. Reflecting on the sacrifices made during the Kargil war, he stressed that the legacy of the fallen soldiers would endure forever. “This land of Kargil stands as a testament to the ultimate sacrifices made by our bravehearts 25 years ago. Their names will be eternally etched in the annals of history,” he stated.

The Prime Minister highlighted the challenges faced during the Kargil conflict, noting that while India pursued peace, the adversary exhibited duplicity, ultimately leading to their defeat. “Our commitment to peace was met with betrayal, but in the end, truth prevailed. Our victory in Kargil was not just a military triumph but a demonstration of our resolve and the valor of our armed forces,” he remarked.

PM Modi criticized Pakistan for its continued support of terrorism and proxy warfare. “Pakistan has failed to learn from its past mistakes. It persists in promoting terrorism to wage a proxy war. We will ensure that their malicious designs never succeed,” he asserted. He further assured that any obstacles to the development of J&K and Ladakh would be swiftly overcome.

Reflecting on the progress made in J&K and Ladakh five years after the abrogation of Article 370, PM Modi painted a picture of transformation and prosperity. “Today, J&K is renowned for hosting a successful G-20 meeting. Cinemas have reopened in Kashmir after over three decades, and the people are pursuing new aspirations,” he observed. The Shinkun La Tunnel, once completed, will facilitate year-round connectivity for Ladakh, he added.

In Ladakh, the budget has seen a significant increase from Rs 1,100 Crore to Rs 6,000 Crore in the past five years. “Ladakh is experiencing a new era of peace and development. With the upcoming 4G network and the completion of the 13 km Zojila Tunnel, National Highway 1 will become an all-weather route,” PM Modi said.

The Prime Minister did not spare the Congress party in his address, accusing them of neglecting the demands of the armed forces, including the army and the Indian Air Force (IAF). “Previous governments ignored the pressing needs of our forces, which yearned for reforms. Our administration listened to them, resulting in the development of 5,000 indigenous weapons,” he noted.

Taking a swipe at Congress for politicizing the Agniveer scheme, PM Modi contended that the critics were the same individuals embroiled in defense budget scams worth thousands of crores. “These detractors never desired a self-reliant army or the introduction of Tejas in the IAF,” he alleged.

Highlighting the BJP government’s implementation of the one rank-one pension scheme, the Prime Minister emphasized that the Kargil victory was a triumph for the entire nation. “As we commemorate Kargil Vijay Diwas, it is not just a victory for any government but a celebration of national unity and resilience. This victory remains one of our nation’s greatest assets,” he concluded.

</excerpt>

In a remarkable tribute to the 25th anniversary of Kargil Vijay Diwas, former army officer Lieutenant Colonel Barsha Rai completed an impressive 160-kilometer run from Srinagar to Drass. The run, which took four days to complete, was aimed at honoring the brave soldiers who sacrificed their lives during the Kargil War.

“I ran to honor our brave hearts who sacrificed their lives for the nation,” Lt. Col. Rai told PTI. Married to an army officer stationed in Kashmir, Rai embarked on this journey from Srinagar to the Kargil War Memorial in the Drass sector. The run began on July 19 and concluded on July 22, with Rai averaging 40 kilometers per day. She was accompanied by the Chinar Warriors marathon team at various stretches.

The route was challenging, starting from Srinagar and moving to Wusan on the second day. On the third day, Rai tackled the 11,649-feet high Zojila Pass on the Srinagar-Leh national highway, which connects the Kashmir valley with the Ladakh region, before reaching Matayen. On the final day, she arrived at the Kargil War Memorial in Drass, where tributes were paid to the martyrs.

Lt. Col. Rai, who was in seventh grade when the Kargil War began, recalled how her father, Colonel Keshab Rai, moved out overnight with his entire unit. “For fauji families like ours, what followed were days of uncertainty, loss, and despair. This run was not just a personal journey for me, but a tribute to the indomitable spirit of the soldiers who fought valiantly during the Kargil war,” she said.

She emphasized that the physical pain she endured during the run was insignificant compared to the hardships faced by soldiers during the war. “Through this run, my aim was to raise awareness about the sacrifices made by our soldiers,” she added.

Lt. Col. Barsha Rai, a fourth-generation army officer, was commissioned into the Army Service Corps in March 2010 from the Officers Training Academy in Chennai, where she was awarded the Garhwal Medal. Her great-grandfather was a Military Cross recipient, underscoring a family legacy of military service.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to be in Ladakh on July 26 to attend the 25th-anniversary celebrations of India’s victory over Pakistan in the 1999 Kargil War.

It has been twenty-three years since the Kargil war, fought in 1999 against the Pakistani infiltrators, which is a day for the Indians to hold their heads high.

This day is observed as the Kargil Vijay Diwas to commemorate the soilders who fought outstandingly in the prodigious hardships and hysterical climatic conditions in the terrain of Ladakh’s Kargil region.

According to the official figures, as many as 527 soldiers of the Indian army lost their lives and another 1363 were said to be wounded after the war, which lasted for over 60 days.

The Indian heroes lived by the adage, “Dulce et decorum est pro patria mori.”

Here are a few of the heroes who made “operation Vijay” successful.

Lieutenant Balwaan Singh

Lieutenant Balwan Singh, also referred to as “the Tiger of Tiger Hill,” was in charge of retaking Tiger Hill. At age 25, he led the Ghatak platoon’s soldiers up the hill in a 12-hour trek via a dangerous, steep path. The attack caught the adversary off guard because India was not expected to pursue such a challenging approach. He raised the Indian flag on Tiger Hill, and for his valour he was later given the Mahavir Chakra.

Captain Vikram Batra

Honoured as the “Tiger of the Drass,” Captain Vikram Batra died fighting the Pakistani troops at the age of 24. He received the highest wartime gallantry award, the Param Vir Chakra posthumously. The entire country showered him with love, titling him “Lion of the Kargil,” “The Kargil hero” and so on.

Naik Digendra Kumar

K. Digendra, General VP , was taken aback by Digendra Kumar’s strategy when he held a Sainik Darbar in Drass on June 2, 1990, following three unsuccessful attempts to recapture Tololing. The elevation of Tololing is 15,000 feet.

Grenadier Yogendra Singh Yadav

The youngest Param Vir Chakra laureate, Yogendra Singh Yadav, is the nation’s pride. Nayab Subedar Yogendra Singh along with his battalion captured Tololing Top on July 12, 1999, leaving behind 2 officers, 2 junior commissioned officers and 21 soldiers, martyred.

Lieutenant Manoj Kumar Pandey

Manoj Pandey was a soldier with the 1/11 Gorkha Rifles. His father claims that when he enlisted in the Indian Army, his only motivation was to get the highest gallantry honour, the Param Vir Chakra, which he eventually did. The late Gopichand Pandey, the late Captain Manoj Pandey’s father, remarked that the Kargil War was one of the toughest conflicts in history because it involved an adversary who had an edge due to elevation, but the Indian Army put up a valiant fight and recaptured our peaks. He declared, “I’m glad that my kid sacrificed his life for his nation and inspired many.”

Rifleman Sanjay Kumar

Sanjay Kumar served in a column during the Kargil conflict that was tasked with capturing the Flat Top of Point 4875 in the Mushkoh Valley. When the column was slowed down by automatic fire from one of the enemy bunkers, Kumar charged directly at them.

Lieutenant keishing Clifford Nongrum

With automatic fire, the enemy held Lt. Keishing Clifford Nongrum’s column at bay for approximately two hours. Despite this, he continued to fire grenades into it, killing six enemy soldiers without considering his own safety. Then, firing from the second location, he attempted to steal the enemy’s universal machine gun.

Major Vivek Gupta

When the 2 Rajputana Rifles launched a battalion attack on Tololing Top in the Drass Sector on June 13, 1999, Vivek Gupta was in charge of the leading Charlie Company at the time. He was able to close in on the enemy thanks to Major Vivek Gupta’s inspirational leadership, despite the enemy firing heavy artillery and automatic weapons.

Captain N kemguruse

N Kenguruse led the Ghatak Platoon during Operation Vijay’s strike on Area Black Rock in the Drass Sector on the evening of June 28, 1999. He assumed responsibility for the risky commando mission that involved attacking a strategically placed enemy machine gun post on a cliff face that was severely impeding all routes to the Battalion’s primary goal.

Major Saurabh Kalia

Saurabh Kalia and five other soldiers were captured alive while on a routine patrol of the Bajrang Post in the Kaksar sector of the untamed, treeless mountains. They were surrounded by a platoon of Pakistani rangers. The patrol had left no traces behind. They were all subjected to 24 days of torture by Pakistani Army troops, after which the army turned over their mangled bodies.

Every Indian holds their head high in pride as they commemorate the incredible triumph and express their sorrow for the lives lost today on the anniversary of Kargil Vijay Diwas.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday paid tribute to the martyrs on the 23rd anniversary of Kargil Vijay Diwas.

Taking to Twitter PM Modi tweeted, “Kargil Vijay Diwas is a symbol of pride and glory of Maa Bharati. On this occasion, my salute to all the brave sons of the country who have accomplished their valor in the defense of the motherland. Jai Hind”

Meanwhile, President of India Draupadi Murmu also tweeted on the occasion of Kargil Vijay Diwas and said “Kargil Vijay Diwas is a symbol of extraordinary valour, valour and determination of our armed forces. I bow to all the brave soldiers who laid down their lives to protect Mother India. All their countrymen will always be indebted to them and their family members. Jai Hind!”

However, on 26 July 1999, the heroes of India defeated Pakistan in the Kargil war. During the war, the Indian Army repulsed Pakistani infiltrators with their valor. At the same time, as part of “Operation Vijay”, the Indian Army won by capturing Tiger Hill and other posts. On this occasion, Prime Minister Narendra Modi saluted the bravery of the Indian Army.

On Tuesday, Kargil Vijay Diwas, President Murmu paid respects to the gallant warriors and martyrs who fought in the 1999 Kargil War against Pakistan.

A day after taking office, President Murmu described the day as “a symbol of exceptional heroism.”

Taking it to Twitter, the president wrote, “Kargil Vijay Diwas is a symbol of extraordinary valour, valour and determination of our armed forces. I bow to all the brave soldiers who laid down their lives to protect Mother India. All their countrymen will always be indebted to them and their family members. Jai Hind!”

A wreath-laying ceremony was held at the Kargil War Memorial in Drass in memory of the martyred soldiers.

On July 26, 1999, the Indian Armed Forces beat Pakistan. Since then, the day has been commemorated as “Kargil Vijay Diwas” to honour the bravery and pride of the soldiers who participated in Operation Vijay.

The triumph of Indian troops over Pakistani soilders in the Kargil War, which took place on July 26, 1999, is commemorated on this day.

The war began on May 8, 1999 and lasted until July 26, 1999 against the Pakistani trespassers. In the winter of 1998, they crossed the line of control into Indian territory and occupied fortified defences with a view of NH 1A in the Drass and Batalik Sectors of Kargil in the Ladakh region, with the sinister intent of controlling all military and civilian operations on the highway.

Despite the enormous hardships and hysterical climatic conditions in the terrain, brave and gallant soldiers launched attacks on Pakistani troops with great enthusiasm and achieved an incredible victory.
