</excerpt>

India have met tremendous success with Rohit Sharma in recent ICC white-ball competitions, winning the T20 World Cup 2024 and the Champions Trophy 2025. Though he has announced that he would continue to play ODIs, there remains no clarity whether he would continue till the 2027 50-over World Cup. Yet, former India World Cup-winning captain Kapil Dev has presented another proposal to Team India regarding captaincy. Actually, Kapil’s favorite to be India’s future white-ball captain is not even the captain in either of the white-ball formats.

Kapil Dev Backs Hardik Pandya as Future White-Ball Captain

“To me, Hardik Pandya is my white ball captain. There are many contenders for the post but Pandya is my choice,” Kapil Dev said in an interview with during a PGTI pro-am event held in Greater Noida.

“Pandya is relatively young and can build a team around him for the next ICC events,” Kapil added.

Hardik Pandya was India’s ODI and T20I vice-captain with Rahul Dravid being the Team India head coach but is now out of any official captaincy role after Gautam Gambhir’s arrival, whose fitness and availability have been questioned.

Kapil Dev On Current Leadership Setup in White-Ball Formats

Suryakumar Yadav has been made India’s permanent captain in T20I cricket, and Shubman Gill is now India’s vice-captain in ODI cricket.

“Ideally, Hardik should also play Test cricket and since he isn’t playing, India will need multiple captain for three formats,” Kapil further said.

Hardik Pandya, by the way, leads Rohit, Suryakumar and Test vice-captain Jasprit Bumrah at Mumbai Indians (MI), an Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise.

Mixed IPL Captaincy Record of Hardik Pandya

Hardik Pandya became captain at Gujarat Titans in IPL 2022 for the first time, and produced stellar performances, Under Pandya, Gujarat Titans claimed the championship in one season there and came in second in one season.

At Mumbai Indians, though, he has yet to have a credit on his file. Pandya-led MI, in 2024, placed last in the league.

Later, he exchanged lighthearted cricket banter with PM Modi over India’s Champions Trophy 2025 victory.
</excerpt>

New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon showcased his cricketing skills as he joined former India captain Kapil Dev for a game of street cricket in New Delhi. The duo formed a team to challenge New Zealand spinner Ajaz Patel and former cricketer Ross Taylor, who retired from international cricket in 2022.

A video of the fun match, shared by PM Luxon on Instagram, has now gone viral. The clip captures Luxon and Kapil Dev enjoying the game alongside young kids at a special event in the Indian capital. Luxon stole the spotlight by taking two remarkable catches in the slip cordon, leaving Taylor and Ajaz Patel visibly surprised.

“Working hard in India to hit it out of the park for Kiwis,” Luxon captioned the video in a joint post with Ajaz Patel.
Banter Between PM Luxon and PM Modi Over Cricket

Earlier this week, Luxon met Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and their conversation took a lighthearted turn with some cricket-related banter.

During their joint press conference, Luxon humorously addressed New Zealand’s loss to India in the Champions Trophy 2025 final in Dubai. In an attempt to avoid a “diplomatic incident,” he joked about not mentioning New Zealand’s Test series victory over India last year, which had eliminated India from the World Test Championship (WTC) Final race.

“I really appreciate that PM Modi didn’t bring up New Zealand’s Champions Trophy loss to India, and I didn’t mention our Test victories in India. Let’s keep it that way and avoid a diplomatic incident,” Luxon quipped, making Modi laugh.

Ross Taylor, who was present at the event, was equally amused by the exchange between the two leaders.

Luxon Praises India’s Dominance in Cricket

Despite the friendly jabs, Luxon acknowledged India’s recent success in international cricket, praising the team’s performances.

“During PM Modi’s tenure, the men in blue have been the most dominant side in cricket, most recently winning the Champions Trophy in Dubai against my men in black. They broke many New Zealanders’ hearts, including mine. I will be the bigger person and just say congratulations,” he said, as quoted by PTI.

The visit highlighted the growing camaraderie between India and New Zealand, with cricket serving as a bridge between the two nations.

</excerpt>

New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon is on a five-day India trip, enthusiastically interacting with children, playing ‘gully cricket,’ and seeing major sights. Luxon, joined by retired New Zealand cricketer Ross Taylor and former Indian cricketer Kapil Dev, is emphasizing deepening India-New Zealand ties and reigniting trade talks.

Playing Cricket in Delhi

Christopher Luxon posted photos of himself and Ross Taylor playing ‘gully cricket’ with kids in New Delhi. His involvement in the casual street cricket version was a testament to his interest in Indian culture and the common sporting interest between the two countries.

Keynote Address at Raisina Dialogue 2025

As the chief guest for the 10th Raisina Dialogue 2025, Christopher Luxon gave the keynote address, emphasizing the strong bonds of connection between India and New Zealand. “It is over 200 years since Indians and New Zealanders started living alongside each other. Just as they were 200 years ago, ‘Kiwi-Indians’ today are completely part of our multicultural society,” he said. He also reiterated that people of Indian origin constitute 11% of Auckland’s population, which indicates their large number and contribution.

India-New Zealand Free Trade Agreement on the Horizon

During his visit, Christopher Luxon was positive about concluding a free trade agreement (FTA) with India within 60 days. The planned agreement seeks to increase bilateral trade tenfold over the next decade. India and New Zealand first initiated talks on the Comprehensive Economic Cooperation Agreement (CECA) in 2010. But talks failed in 2015 after nine rounds of negotiations.

On March 16, after almost a decade, both countries decided to resume talks to deepen economic engagement. However, according to the Global Trade Research Initiative (GTRI), India’s proposed FTA with New Zealand would come as no significant advantage to the domestic industry given that some of the Indian exports are already imported duty-free to New Zealand.

New Zealand has a minimum average import tariff of 2.3%, while India has 17.8%, which can lead to trade imbalances. The two-way trade between New Zealand and India stood at $873.4 million during 2023-24, while that of 2022-23 was $1.02 billion.

Strengthening Bilateral Relations

Luxon’s trip also indicates the eagerness of New Zealand to enhance relations with India. His role in cultural events, as well as efforts to reinstate trade agreements, represents a strategic effort towards closer cooperation. As both countries are eager to boost trade and people-to-people engagement, the coming months can be instrumental in determining future economic partnerships.

The BCCI’s decision to restrict family members from joining players on short tours has caused a stir. This rule came into effect after India’s disappointing tour of Australia. As a result, many cricketers have expressed concern. Even captain Rohit Sharma, while announcing the Champions Trophy squad, hinted at the issue. He stated, “I will have to sit down with the secretary to discuss a few things. About the family and other stuff.”

New Rule Limits Family Presence

Under the new policy, families cannot accompany players on tours shorter than 15 days. Consequently, during the Champions Trophy, some cricketers’ families, including Virat Kohli’s wife, Anushka Sharma, were present but only for select matches. Although most players have remained silent on the matter, Kohli openly criticized the restriction. According to him, family support plays a crucial role, especially during difficult times.

Furthermore, Kohli pointed out that while teammates offer support, nothing compares to the comfort of having loved ones around. He also expressed disappointment that many people fail to recognize the importance of family presence.

Kapil Dev Suggests a Balanced Approach

Meanwhile, legendary cricketer Kapil Dev shared his perspective on the issue. Speaking at the ‘Kapil Dev Grant Thornton Invitational’ event, he stressed the need for balance between personal well-being and team responsibilities. “Well, I don’t know, that’s individual. I think it’s the cricket board’s call,” he said.

Additionally, he acknowledged the significance of family but emphasized the need for team unity. Reflecting on his playing days, he explained, “In our time, we used to say to ourselves – not by the cricket board – that the first half of the tour should be cricket, and in the second half, the family should come and enjoy it too. It should be a blend.”

Players Divided Over the Decision

As expected, the rule has sparked mixed reactions among Indian cricketers. For instance, Kohli, along with Ravindra Jadeja and Mohammed Shami, had their families with them during the Champions Trophy in Dubai. However, they chose not to stay at the team hotel and covered their accommodation costs personally.

Kohli firmly defended the presence of families. He explained, “It is very difficult to explain to people how grounding it is to just come back to your family every time you have something intense, which happens on the outside.”

Moreover, he expressed frustration over the perception that families should be kept away. “I do not think people have an understanding of what value it brings to a large extent. And I feel quite disappointed about that because it is like people who have no control over what is going on are kind of brought into conversations and put out at the forefront that, ‘oh, maybe they need to be kept away,’” he added.

In the end, the debate continues as players struggle to balance their professional commitments with personal well-being.

Jasprit Bumrah has been on a stellar run in international cricket in 2024. Notably, he surpassed legendary pacer Kapil Dev in two key bowling stats, further cementing his reputation as India’s premier fast bowler in overseas conditions.

Bumrah’s Five-Wicket Performance

On day two of the third Test against Australia in Brisbane, Bumrah stood out as India’s leading bowler. He claimed 5 wickets for 72 runs in 25 overs, maintaining an economy rate of 2.90. He removed key batsmen, including Steve Smith, Travis Head, Usman Khawaja, Nathan McSweeney, and Mitchell Marsh, showcasing his skill and consistency.

Bumrah Breaks Kapil Dev’s Record

This five-wicket haul marked Bumrah’s 10th outside Asia, surpassing Kapil Dev’s tally of nine. Bumrah has claimed three five-wicket hauls in Australia, three in South Africa, and two each in the West Indies and England. In comparison, Kapil took five five-wicket hauls in Australia, and two each in England and the West Indies.

Bumrah Leads in SENA Conditions

Furthermore, Bumrah now holds eight five-wicket hauls in SENA countries (South Africa, England, New Zealand, and Australia), surpassing Kapil’s seven. This milestone further emphasizes Bumrah’s dominance in challenging overseas conditions.

Bumrah Ties with Pat Cummins in World Test Championship

With his recent performance, Bumrah now ties with Australian captain Pat Cummins for the third-most five-wicket hauls in ICC World Test Championship history, each having nine. Only Nathan Lyon and Ravichandran Ashwin have more, further solidifying Bumrah’s place among the greats.

Bumrah Dominates 2024 Cricket

This year, Bumrah has been the top wicket-taker in international cricket, with 73 wickets in 20 matches at an impressive average of 13.78. Additionally, he has taken four five-wicket hauls, all in Tests. In fact, with 58 wickets in just 12 Tests, he has outperformed every other bowler in 2024, maintaining an average of 15.20.

India’s Day Two Performance

After winning the toss and opting to bowl, India made early breakthroughs. They quickly dismissed Khawaja, McSweeney, and Labuschagne, reducing Australia to 75/3. However, a resilient 241-run partnership between Smith (101) and Head (152) put India on the back foot. Once Bumrah broke the stand, Australia recovered, ending the day at 405/7. Carey (45*) and Starc (7*) remained unbeaten.

Bumrah’s exceptional performance not only surpasses historical records but also reinforces his status as one of the best pacers in the world.

Vinod Kambli has agreed to the proposal from Kapil Dev and the 1983 World Cup-winning team to enter rehabilitation. The team offered their support on the condition that Kambli would take the necessary steps to improve his situation. Kambli expressed his willingness to take the offer, saying he fears nothing as long as his family is with him.

Financial Struggles and Health Concerns

Kambli is currently facing financial challenges. While he’s not struggling to survive, his financial situation remains tough. After a recent health scare, Kambli revealed that his only source of income is a ₹30,000 monthly pension from the BCCI. With two children to care for and 14 previous rehab attempts, Kambli is determined to try again to improve his health and financial stability.

Support from Family and Friends

When asked about his financial condition, Kambli said it was “bad,” but he praised his wife for managing everything. He also mentioned that Sunil Gavaskar was the first to respond to Kapil Dev’s offer. Kambli stated, “Sure, I have no hesitation (to enter rehab), because until I have my family with me, I’m not afraid of anything, anybody. I will complete it and return. I will come back,” in an interview with Vickey Lalwani on his YouTube channel.

Recent Health Scare and Public Support

Kambli recently made headlines after appearing to struggle at the unveiling of Ramakant Achrekar’s memorial, which raised concerns about his health. Kambli later confirmed that he had been in trouble but is now recovering. The Indian cricket community quickly rallied behind him, with Kapil Dev and his teammates leading the charge.

Ajay Jadeja and BCCI Offer Continued Support

Ajay Jadeja, a close friend and former teammate, visited Kambli and encouraged him to get better. Kambli believes that if necessary, the BCCI will offer their help, recalling how the board previously provided INR 1 crore for Anshuman Gaekwad’s treatment. “Jadeja is a very good friend of mine. He came to meet me and said ‘Come on, get up.’ A lot of people have called me lately. Everyone saw me,” Kambli said. “Definitely, they [BCCI] will help. Abey Kuruvilla (former India pacer) is with BCCI, he is in touch with me, and he is also in touch with my wife.”

Kambli Acknowledges Past Mistakes and Focuses on Recovery

Kambli admitted that his past struggles were due to excessive drinking but assured that he has quit drinking and smoking. His friend, Marcus Couto, a former First-Class umpire, also confirmed that Kambli has stopped. “No, no. I had stopped drinking and smoking six months ago. Did it for the sake of my kids. I used to do it earlier, but I’ve left it behind now,” Kambli said.

</excerpt>

Yograj Singh, the former cricketer and father of Yuvraj Singh, is no stranger to making bold statements. Recently, his remarks about cricket legends Kapil Dev and MS Dhoni gained significant attention. During an interview on the Switch YouTube channel, Yograj expressed his lingering resentment towards MS Dhoni, stating, “I won’t forgive MS Dhoni. He should look at his face in the mirror. He is a very big cricketer, but what he has done against my son, everything is coming out now; it can never be forgiven in life.”

Yuvraj Singh and Dhoni shared the Indian cricket field for over a decade, with Yuvraj even serving as vice-captain under Dhoni. However, tension arose when MS Dhoni was appointed captain following Rahul Dravid’s tenure in 2007, a role many believed should have gone to Yuvraj, given his position as vice-captain under Dravid.

Yograj Singh played a crucial role in shaping Yuvraj’s cricket career, providing him with rigorous training. He also had the opportunity to coach Arjun Tendulkar, son of cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar. In the same interview, when asked about Arjun’s potential, Yograj used a vivid metaphor to describe the young cricketer’s future.

“Have you seen a diamond in a coal mine? It starts as coal, just a rock when taken out, but if it is placed in the hands of a skilled craftsman, it can be polished into a Kohinoor. It is priceless. But if that same diamond reaches a person who does not know its worth, he destroys it,” Yograj explained. He added that his own son, Yuvraj, acknowledges his father’s role in his success, often saying, “There is magic in my dad’s hands; he made me what I am.”

Yograj also shared that his strict coaching methods were initially met with harsh criticism, even within his own family. “I was called ‘Hitler, Dragon Singh,’ and everyone in my home hated me. My relatives said I shouldn’t have been a father,” he recalled. However, he stood by his methods, and with God’s grace, Yuvraj Singh emerged as one of India’s cricketing greats.

In this interview, Yograj Singh’s emotions reflect both the pride he feels for his son’s accomplishments and the bitterness he harbors towards those he believes wronged him.

</excerpt>

The BCCI has announced a significant prize of Rs 125 crore for the Indian team that won the T20 World Cup title.

Yet, a former Indian cricketer, part of the historic 1983 World Cup-winning squad led by Kapil Dev, has urged the board to also honor and reward their team.

In the 1983 World Cup final, India, captained by Kapil Dev, achieved a remarkable victory by defeating the formidable West Indies, two-time defending champions, by 43 runs. India scored 183 runs in their allotted 60 overs and then showcased exceptional bowling prowess to restrict West Indies to just 140 runs.

Madan Lal and Mohinder Amarnath stood out with three wickets each, securing India’s victory and announcing their arrival as a cricketing powerhouse on the global stage.

The former player pointed out that unlike the current era where substantial prize money is awarded, the 1983 champions received no financial rewards at the time, as the BCCI claimed financial constraints.

However, he acknowledged the board’s improved financial position now allows for such significant prize announcements.

“Rs 125 crore is huge. Happy for Team India. Well, we were not given cash rewards at that time (after 1983 World Cup victory), because board (BCCI) had said ‘we don’t have money’. Now they can give, what is stopping them? Only a few players (of that team) are getting work, rest are struggling. BCCI should look into it,” a member of the 1983 World Cup-winning Indian team told IANS on condition of anonymity.

In recognition of their remarkable achievement, the BCCI awarded each player a modest cash prize of Rs 25,000. Upon hearing about this relatively low amount, the late renowned singer Lata Mangeshkar took initiative to honor the team’s success. She organized a musical concert in Delhi aimed at raising funds for the World Cup-winning squad. Thanks to her efforts, each player was presented with Rs 1 lakh as a token of appreciation.

</excerpt>

After assuming the role of President of the Professional Golf Tour of India (PGTI), World Cup-winning former India cricket captain Kapil Dev remarked that he now carries much greater responsibility. On Thursday, Kapil Dev officially took on the position, marking a new chapter for the PGTI, the governing body of men’s professional golf in India.

In an interview with ANI, Kapil Dev expressed his happiness at becoming the new President of the PGTI. He emphasized the need to ensure that players receive increased opportunities to participate in matches.

“I am very happy, lots of more responsibility on my shoulders. Now I have to make sure all the players know we can look after them and give them more golf, so it’s more responsibility now,” Kapil Dev said.

He also urged the corporate sector to step forward and collaborate with the PGTI to organize tournaments.

“That’s what we like to do. See, in the winter, lots of corporate gold takes place all over the country and I would say a similar thing should happen to the top gold tournaments of the PGTI. Still, it’s a catch… we would ask more corporate world to come out and try to organise their own tournaments with PGTI,” he added.

Previously, PGTI CEO Uttam Singh Mundy expressed their honor at having Indian sports icon Kapil Dev assume the presidency of the organization.

“We are confident that the PGTI will scale greater heights under Kapil Dev’s astute leadership as his name has been synonymous with excellence in sports. His valuable experience as a professional sportsman and an accomplished golfer will be an asset for the PGTI, paving the way for the further growth of Indian professional golf. We wish Kapil Dev all the success,” Uttam said, according to a release.

Kapil Dev, known for his accomplishments as an amateur golfer, has served as the vice president and a member of the Governing Body of PGTI for the past three years. During this time, he has played a crucial role alongside the core team of PGTI in advancing and enhancing Indian professional golf.

</excerpt>

Kapil Dev, the man who led Team India to its first One Day International World Cup win, has come out in support of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) for taking a string stand on ensuring international players do not let go of their duties for their domestic teams.

When the BCCI revealed their yearly player retainership 2023–24 season for the senior men’s squad, it had two big names missing – Shreyas Iyer and Ishan Kishan. The duo had not represented their domestic teams in different tournament even though they had been released from the national team. Inbstead they were busy practicing to play in the lucrative Indian Premier League, the T20 tournament.

“It is recommended that all athletes prioritize playing domestic cricket when they are not representing their country,” the BCCI stated in a stern message while releasing the player retainership for the 2023–24 season.

According to Kapil Dev, the decision to penalise players who skip domestic cricket without nay valid reason will greatly benefit Indian cricket. “I was going through the last few weeks of cricket in India. The cricket board’s move towards first-class cricket makes me very delighted,” he said in an interview with the PTI.

The former captain is thrilled with the idea, which he believes would further improve cricket in the nation, and believes that international players should play for their respective domestic teams when they are not representing their country. “The boys ought to play that; it’s beneficial to the nation.” I am glad about anything that is beneficial to the nation,” he continued.

Additionally, Kapil believes that the nation’s progress transcends any one person’s name. “A few players may suffer, but accept it. Nobody is greater than the nation. Excellent work,” he said.

Legendary Indian cricketer Kapil Dev on Tuesday said on former India captain Virat Kohli’s return to the Indian team for the Asia Cup.

The World Cup-winning India captain Dev said, on his comeback against Pakistan Virat Kohli looked good and will be soon back in form.

“I am not worried about Virat Kohli’s form but it’s good to see him back. Saw a couple of shots that made an impact, I just want him to be more sure about that. He is coming back and looked good. He was lucky to be dropped in the first over but whatever he was playing, he was there. I like his attitude not today but from the last ten years, and that makes him a much bigger player than anybody else,” Dev said.

Meanwhile, Dev further said Kohli only needs one good knock to return to form.

“I think, don’t focus on runs for the country but understand that you are representing the country which is much bigger than that anything else. He should still feel he is representing the country. No player in every match will get zero but I think with his ability and talent he should not take time to come back into form. He needs just one good inning to be back and I have no doubt about it,” Dev said.

Earlier on Sunday in the opening of the Asia Cup campaign against Pakistan in Dubai Virat Kohli scored 35 runs from 34 balls. Although India won the first match against Pakistan by five wickets.

Moreover, the former cricketer is struggling hard for his form and it’s been thousand days since Kohli has not scored an international century.
