He highlighted that the state government, in coordination with the central government, has made extensive arrangements for the event, including enhanced security and health provisions. Yogi Adityanath stressed that no festival or spiritual practice is complete without self-discipline, citing the principle “Shivo Bhutva Shivam Yajet” to encourage devotees to embody the spirit of Shiva in their actions.

The Kanwar Yatra, starting on July 22 and ending on August 6, sees Shiv devotees from all over India participating in the ritual of ‘Jalabhishek’ at Shiv temples.The Chief Minister noted the global recognition of this event and called for a smooth and safe journey for all participants. Despite a few minor incidents, he reassured that measures like patrolling, cleanliness drives, and medical camps are in place to ensure the pilgrimage proceeds without issues.

Furthermore, the state has arranged for drone surveillance and flower showers to enhance the experience. Yogi Adityanath reiterated the importance of maintaining discipline and respect throughout the yatra, ensuring that the spiritual journey remains peaceful and organized.

</excerpt>

To ensure safety during the Kanwar Yatra, all schools in Ghaziabad will be closed from July 29 to August 2. This decision, announced by District Magistrate Indra Vikram Singh, is due to the large number of Shiva devotees traveling with holy water from Haridwar to various states, including Rajasthan, Haryana, and Delhi.

Officials have imposed a ban on all vehicles, including small and light ones, to manage the large crowds and ensure smooth and safe travel for the Kanwariyas (devotees). The closure of schools aims to avoid traffic disruptions and ensure the safety of students and school buses during this busy period.

The Ghaziabad Police has increased security in the area following an incident where a car allegedly hit some Kanwariyas in Muradnagar. The Kanwariyas then attacked the driver and vandalized the car, leading to a traffic jam and a blockade on the Delhi-Meerut Expressway. In response, two companies of Provincial Armed Constabulary (PAC) have been stationed at key locations, including the Ganga Canal Bridge in Muradnagar, and security has been strengthened throughout the district.

The Kanwar Yatra, which involves devotees offering holy water to Lord Shiva, will conclude on August 2 with Sawan Shivratri.

In preparation for the annual Kanwar Yatra, the district administration has ordered the closure of all schools and educational institutions in Ghaziabad from July 29 to August 2. The decision, announced by Dharmendra Sharma, the district inspector of schools, aims to manage the influx of devotees expected to converge at the Dudheshwar Nath temple. No similar closures have been reported in Noida as of late Saturday evening.

The Kanwar Yatra, a significant religious pilgrimage, is anticipated to draw lakhs of devotees from across Uttar Pradesh to the Dudheshwar Nath temple, particularly on Shivratri, August 2. The district magistrate’s order mandates the closure of all schools and higher educational institutions along the pilgrimage route to ensure safety and manage crowds. Sharma emphasized that any institutions violating this directive will face penalties.

In addition to school closures, traffic measures are being implemented to accommodate the surge in pilgrims. Private cars and light goods vehicles traveling towards Meerut will be diverted from the Delhi-Meerut Expressway (DME) through NH-9 and Hapur. In Noida, two lanes at the Kalindi Kunj border, exiting Delhi, have been closed from the Okhla barrage to the bird sanctuary, potentially causing traffic delays. These restrictions will remain in place until August 5.

To ensure the safety and security of the pilgrims, more than 40 CCTV cameras and drones will monitor the Dudheshwar Nath temple area. Around 200 police officers will be deployed on-site, and a special 25-member cycling squad has been formed for crowd control and intelligence gathering. This team may be expanded as needed.

The police have also set up camps to assist pilgrims and manage the anticipated crowds. However, commuters in the affected areas are advised to plan for potential delays and disruptions due to the restrictions and diversions. As the Kanwar Yatra progresses, authorities will continue to monitor the situation and implement necessary measures to ensure the safety and smooth conduct of the pilgrimage.

Heavy vehicles have been barred from the DME since July 22.

The closure of lanes in Okhla is anticipated to create traffic congestion on the remaining two lanes leading to Delhi, potentially causing long delays during peak hours. The 4km stretch connecting Mayur Vihar and Kalindi Kunj, which passes a temple frequently visited by pilgrims on their journey from Haridwar, will particularly be affected.

</excerpt>

The Supreme Court extended its interim stay on the Uttar Pradesh government’s directive for eateries along the Kanwar Yatra route to disclose the names of owners and staff. The court’s decision on Friday reflects concerns about the forced disclosure of personal details.

Earlier, the Uttar Pradesh government defended the directive, asserting that it aimed to enhance transparency and ensure that pilgrims, who follow strict dietary practices during the Yatra, are well-informed about the food being served. This measure was intended to avoid conflicts stemming from inadvertent consumption of non-vegetarian food or items containing onions and garlic, which could disrupt the pilgrimage.

In its affidavit, the state highlighted the requirements under “Regulation 2.1.1 (5) of the Food and Safety Standards (Licensing & Registration of Food Businesses (Regulations), 2011,” which mandates registration and photo ID disclosure for food businesses, a regulation often overlooked by many local eateries. The government argued that such measures are necessary to prevent disturbances during the Yatra and to maintain public order, especially in sensitive areas like Muzaffarnagar.

The UP government emphasized that these directives are temporary, applying only during the Kanwar Yatra period from July 22 to August 6. They argued that the guidelines are not discriminatory, as they apply uniformly to all food sellers regardless of religious or community affiliations. The government assured that the measures are in line with maintaining secular values and ensuring the peaceful observance of various religious festivals.

The directives also include no restrictions on food business operations beyond the prohibition of non-vegetarian food during the Yatra. The state’s move to require name disclosures was framed as a proactive step to prevent potential issues and maintain harmony among the pilgrims.

Last week, both Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand issued similar directives to eateries along the Kanwar Yatra route, aiming to minimize misunderstandings and uphold the religious sentiments of the pilgrims.

</excerpt>

The Uttar Pradesh government has robustly defended its controversial directive mandating that shop owners along the Kanwar Yatra route display their names. The directive, intended to maintain law and order during the Hindu pilgrimage, has faced challenges, with petitions questioning its necessity and legality.

In a recent submission to the Supreme Court, the state government justified the directive as a necessary measure to ensure the smooth conduct of the pilgrimage. The government explained that the requirement came in response to complaints from Kanwariyas—devotees participating in the Kanwar Yatra—who reported confusion due to the varying names of shops and eateries along the route. This confusion was addressed by the police to enhance the overall experience for the pilgrims.

Previously, the Supreme Court had issued a temporary halt on the enforcement of the directive, allowing food sellers to display the types of food they offer without being required to display their names. The court had expressed concerns over whether such a requirement was overstepping.

In its response, the Uttar Pradesh government clarified that there is no blanket ban on food sellers, other than a restriction on selling non-vegetarian food items. The requirement for shop owners to display their names aims to improve transparency and reduce confusion among the pilgrims.

“The directives were introduced following complaints from Kanwariyas about confusion caused by the shop names,” the government’s submission stated.”In order to guarantee the safety and clarity required for the pilgrimage, the police responded to these complaints.”

The state government emphasized that while the name display is a new requirement, it does not inhibit food sellers from operating their businesses as usual. It maintains that the measure is an additional step to prevent any potential issues during the pilgrimage.

This directive remains a point of contention as it navigates legal and public scrutiny, with ongoing discussions about its impact on local businesses and its role in maintaining order during the Yatra.

</excerpt>

In response to questions about the Kanwar Yatra directives in two BJP-ruled states, the US State Department emphasized its ongoing discussions with Indian officials regarding the need for equal treatment of all religious groups.

A Pakistani journalist highlighted the issue during a press briefing, accusing the BJP government of compelling Muslim restaurant owners to display their “Muslim names” at their establishments.

“We have seen those reports. We have also seen reports that the Indian Supreme Court on July 22 issued an interim stay on the implementation of those rules. So they’re not actually in effect,” said US State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller.

“Speaking generally, we are, as we always say, committed to promoting and protecting universal respect for the right of freedom of religion and belief for all anywhere in the world,” he added.

The Supreme Court recently issued an interim stay on the directives from the two BJP-ruled states that required eateries along the Kanwar Yatra route to display owner and staff names along with other details.

Notices were also sent to the governments of Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and Madhya Pradesh, where a similar directive was issued by the Ujjain municipal body.

A bench comprising Justices Hrishikesh Roy and SVN Bhatti suggested that eateries should indicate whether they serve vegetarian or non-vegetarian food.

Justice SVN Bhatti shared a personal anecdote, recalling his visits to a Muslim-run vegetarian restaurant in Kerala known for maintaining international standards.

“…Without disclosing the name of the city, there is a vegetarian hotel run by a Hindu. There is another vegetarian hotel run by a Muslim.

“As a judge of that state, I was going to the hotel run by a Muslim for vegetarian food. When it comes to food standards and safety, he was displaying everything. He had returned from Dubai. He was maintaining international standards with regard to safety, cleanliness, and hygiene. So it was my choice to go to that hotel,” Justice Bhatti said.

</excerpt>

Delhi Minister and senior Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Atishi Singh inspected the Kanwar Yatra preparations in the National Capital. Following her inspection, she addressed the media, stating, “The preparations are in full swing, and we are ready to welcome the Kanwar.”

During her visit to inspect the Kanwar Yatra camps in Delhi, Atishi Singh mentioned that the largest camps, located at Kashmiri Gate, can accommodate at least 2,000 Kavarias. She also noted that, due to the high possibility of rain, waterproof tents, beds, and tables have been arranged.

“The 185 camps can easily accommodate at least 10,000 people. Given the likelihood of rain during Sawan, we have arranged waterproof tents. We have also made provisions for beds, tables, and food. Additionally, a doctor is stationed here, and the medical team will be available 24/7, working in three shifts to assist with any injuries caused by the rain. An ambulance is stationed outside the Kavad camp, ready to transport anyone with serious health issues to the nearest LNGP hospital,” she added.

Further commenting on the decision to install nameplates, she said that India is a diverse country with people from all religions and castes and accused the BJP government of attempting to create conflicts between these groups. She labelled the BJP as an anti-Dalit party, asserting that the people of the country will never forgive them for this.

“In India, people of every religion and caste have been living in harmony. It does not matter if they speak different languages or belong to different castes or religions. When it comes to devotion or festivals, people of all religions, castes, and languages unite in devotion. The BJP government just wants to create disputes between religions and castes.

</excerpt>

Kashmir: Omar Abdullah, Vice President of the Jammu and Kashmir National Conference, has voiced both anticipation and concern regarding the upcoming budget, particularly its provisions for Jammu and Kashmir. Abdullah highlighted pressing issues such as high unemployment rates in the region and emphasized the need for concrete measures aimed at job creation. “We are eager to see if the budget addresses the needs of Jammu and Kashmir. With unemployment being a major issue, we hope the budget will include specific measures for employment generation. Should these concerns remain unaddressed, our two Members of Parliament will ensure the matter is raised in Parliament,” Abdullah stated.

Criticism of Kanwar Yatra Restrictions and UP Government’s Intentions

Abdullah also criticized the Uttar Pradesh government’s recent order concerning the Kanwar Yatra, suggesting it marginalizes the Muslim community. “The fast-tracked order seems to be aimed at excluding Muslims. If the UP government wants to keep Muslims at a distance, it’s important to remember that the successful conduct of the Amarnath Yatra in Kashmir relies heavily on Muslim support,” Abdullah remarked, emphasizing the critical role of the Muslim community in facilitating this annual pilgrimage.

Advocacy for Equal Political Participation

On the issue of political participation, Abdullah called for greater equality, particularly regarding the bans imposed on political parties. He argued that if the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) is permitted to operate freely, then similar restrictions on other political parties should be lifted. “If the RSS is allowed to function as a political entity, then restrictions on other political parties should also be removed. Government employees should be allowed to join political parties and participate in political activities,” Abdullah asserted, advocating for a fair and level playing field in the political domain.

</excerpt>

The Bharatiya Janata Party-led governments in Uttar Pradesh faced a setback from the Supreme Court regarding issued directives. On Monday, the Supreme Court placed an interim stay on the orders from state governments, which required eateries along the Kanwar Yatra route to display the names of their owners. The matter has been scheduled for a hearing on July 26.

The Supreme Court was hearing a series of petitions challenging a directive issued by the Senior Superintendent of Police in Muzaffarnagar, Uttar Pradesh, which required shop owners to display their names outside their shops during the Kanwar Yatra season. The police claimed the decision was made in the interest of maintaining law and order. This directive was reportedly enforced across many districts in Uttar Pradesh. Similar directives had been issued in Uttarakhand and Madhya Pradesh.

As the hearing began, the bench inquired if any formal order had been issued to enforce this directive. Senior advocate CU Singh, representing the Association for Protection of Civil Rights, stated that although the authorities claimed it was voluntary, the directive was, in fact, being enforced.

A bench of Justices Hrishikesh Roy and SVN Bhatti issued a notice to the governments of Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and Madhya Pradesh, where the Kanwar Yatra takes place. The bench stated that state police could not compel shopkeepers to display their names, only the food items they sell.

“Until the returnable date, having regard to the discussion, we deem it appropriate to pass an interim order prohibiting the enforcement of the above directives. In other words, the food sellers, hawkers, etc. may be required to display the kind of food they are serving to Kanwariyas, but they must not be forced to disclose the names,” the bench said in its order.

Soon after the Supreme Court placed an interim stay on the ‘nameplate’ requirement for eateries along the Kanwar Yatra routes, Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader and Member of Parliament Mahua Moitra criticised the directive as “unconstitutional” and contrary to the fundamental principles of the Constitution. She was one of the petitioners who challenged the directives, arguing that they cause religious discrimination, and questioned the authorities’ power to issue such orders.

“I am happy; we filed the petition yesterday, and it was heard in the Supreme Court today. It is a completely unconstitutional order, against the fundamental principles of our Constitution, specifically Articles 15 and 19,” said Mahua Moitra.

He asserted that neither the BJP nor the NDA governments have introduced new legislation regarding this matter.

Rajbar stated that the current administration is merely completing tasks left unfinished by previous governments. He pointed out the benefits of various schemes, such as the Rs 5 lakh aid under the Ayushman card and improvements under the Swachh Bharat mission, which have positively affected the state. He criticized opposition parties for focusing on protests rather than recognizing these improvements.

In related news, BJP MP Arun Govil supported the Uttar Pradesh government’s directive for food shops along the Kanwar route to display owners’ names. He argued that consumers have the right to know where their food is coming from, dismissing claims of religious discrimination from opposition parties.

The Uttar Pradesh government issued this directive on July 20, requiring food shops on the Kanwar route to display their owners’ names. This move has faced criticism from opposition parties.

</excerpt>

The Kanwar Yatra, a significant annual pilgrimage for Shiva devotees, commences today, marking the first day of the Hindu month of Shravan. This year, more than three crore devotees, known as kanwariyas, are expected to participate.

A Time-Honored Tradition

The kanwariyas transport sacred Ganga water to their hometowns to offer to Lord Shiva. The water is typically collected from Haridwar in Uttarakhand or Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh. Participants, primarily men dressed in saffron, carry flags featuring Shiva and pots made of plastic, brass, or steel filled with the holy water.

Historical Significance and Rising Popularity

The Kanwar Yatra has seen a surge in popularity over the years. According to Hindu tradition, Parshuram, an avatar of Lord Vishnu and a devoted follower of Shiva, initiated the first Kanwar procession. In 2022, approximately four crore people collected Ganga water in Haridwar alone. The pilgrimage, which saw over 46 lakh vehicles arriving in the city last year, often leads to significant traffic congestion, particularly due to the presence of dak kanwariyas who travel non-stop on bikes or vehicles.

Challenges and Safety Concerns

The pilgrimage is not without its risks. Last year, 13 devotees lost their lives, with causes ranging from drowning to accidents. Despite these dangers, the yatra continues to attract a growing number of participants each year.

Changing Demographics

The composition of kanwariyas has evolved significantly since the late 1980s, when only a few thousand people participated. Today, the majority of kanwariyas are young men from low-income backgrounds, working in informal sectors such as driving, labor, and security. For many, the yatra offers an escape from the uncertainties of daily life and a chance to demonstrate their physical strength and resourcefulness.

Economic Impact

The Kanwar Yatra also provides a significant economic boost to the regions it passes through. Thousands of eateries, fruit vendors, clothes sellers, and other businesses benefit from the influx of pilgrims. On average, a kanwariya spends between Rs 3,000 to 4,000 on the pilgrimage, contributing to local economies.

Improved Facilities

Over the years, the facilities available to kanwariyas have improved, making the journey more comfortable. Roadside camps, eateries, and rest stops have increased in number, providing much-needed relief to pilgrims traveling long distances, often on foot.

Sonu Pal, a dhaba owner on National Highway 58, noted that his business doubles during the yatra. “We usually earn Rs 2 to 2.5 lakh a month on normal days. But the heavy influx of kanwariyas during the yatra allows us to earn much more,” he said.

Government Preparations

State governments have made extensive preparations to ensure the comfort and safety of the pilgrims. This year’s yatra promises to be another massive event, reflecting the deep devotion and cultural significance of this ancient pilgrimage.

</excerpt>

The Ujjain Municipal Corporation has instructed shop owners to display their names and mobile numbers outside their shops, following a similar rule recently implemented by the BJP government in Uttar Pradesh for eateries along the Kanwar Yatra route. Ujjain Mayor Mukesh Tatwal says this rule is for safety and transparency, not to target Muslim shopkeepers.

Details:

In Ujjain, a historic city famous for the Mahakal Temple and the upcoming Simhastha (Kumbh) Mela in 2028, the local government has issued a new directive. All shop owners must display their names and contact numbers outside their establishments. This rule follows the MP Shop Establishment Act, also known as the Gumasta License, which was first approved in 2002.

Mayor Mukesh Tatwal explained that the directive is meant to enhance safety and transparency for customers. He said, “Ujjain is a sacred city where people come with faith. They should have the right to know who is running the shop they are buying from. This helps if they need to report any issues.”

Tatwal emphasized that this rule is not aimed at targeting Muslim shopkeepers. “The order is about safety, not about targeting any community,” he said.

Under the new rule, shop owners who do not comply will face a fine of ₹2,000 for the first violation and ₹5,000 for subsequent violations. This policy is similar to a recent order in Uttar Pradesh, where eateries along the Kanwar Yatra route were required to display the names and contact numbers of their owners. The Uttar Pradesh government has now extended this order statewide, and similar rules are already in place in Uttarakhand.

Critics argue that this rule unfairly targets Muslim traders, but Mayor Tatwal asserts that it is a safety measure for everyone, not a discriminatory practice.

Key Points:

– What’s New: Ujjain shop owners must display names and contact numbers.
– Purpose: To improve safety and transparency for customers.
– Background: This rule is part of the MP Shop Establishment Act from 2002.
– Fine Details: ₹2,000 for the first violation; Rs. 5,000 for the second.
– Comparison: Similar to a recent rule in Uttar Pradesh for eateries along the Kanwar Yatra route.
– Criticism: Some claim it targets Muslim shopkeepers, but the mayor denies this.

This rule comes as Ujjain prepares for major religious events and seeks to enhance the experience for visitors to the city.

</excerpt>

Yoga guru and entrepreneur Baba Ramdev has expressed his support for the Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand governments’ directive that mandates shopkeepers along the Kanwar Yatra route to display their names. Ramdev highlighted the significance of being proud of one’s identity.

“If I have no issue in revealing my identity, why should anyone else? Everyone should take pride in their name. There’s no need to conceal it; only purity in work is necessary. If our work is pure, our religion or community does not matter,” he stated on Sunday morning.

Following suit, Ujjain’s municipal body also issued a directive requiring shop owners to display their names. Ujjain Mayor Mukesh Tatwal announced that violators would face a ₹2,000 fine for the first offence and ₹5,000 for repeated non-compliance.

“Ujjain is a city of religious significance. Visitors come here with faith. They have the right to know the shopkeeper’s identity whose services they use. If dissatisfied or cheated, knowing the shopkeeper’s details helps them seek redress,” he said.

The directive has sparked controversy. AIMIM president Asaduddin Owaisi argued that it reflects growing hostility towards Muslims in India. “Fear on UP’s Kanwar routes: This is the reality of hatred for Indian Muslims. Political parties, leaders of Hindutva, and so-called secular parties are responsible for this visceral hatred,” he stated on ‘X’.

CPI(M) leader Brinda Karat criticized the Uttar Pradesh government, asserting, “The Uttar Pradesh government is undermining the Constitution of India with such orders. They are humiliating an entire community and attempting to divide society. This type of targeting was done by Nazis in Germany. I condemn it.”

Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Sanjay Raut accused the BJP of creating division. “Now you’re directing food stalls to put up nameplates based on caste and religion? Do you want to divide the country? This won’t benefit you. You are disrupting national unity,” he said.

Conversely, West Bengal BJP chief Sukanta Majumdar accused the Opposition of misleading the public, noting that similar notifications were issued during the Mulayam Singh Yadav and Akhilesh Yadav governments.

</excerpt>

The governments of Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand have sparked a significant controversy by directing dhabas and restaurants along the Kanwar Yatra route to display the names of their owners. The opposition has condemned the order, labeling it discriminatory.

Asaduddin Owaisi, a prominent opposition leader, criticized the directive on social media. “Fear on UP’s Kanwar routes: This is the reality of hatred for Indian Muslims. Credit for this visceral hatred goes to political parties, leaders of Hindutva and so-called lip-servicing secular parties,” he posted on X, accompanied by a photo of an egg stall showcasing the owner’s name.

In response, West Bengal BJP chief Sukanta Majumdar accused the opposition of misleading the public. He argued that similar directives had been issued by previous governments led by the Samajwadi Party. “The Opposition is misleading people and spreading lies. A similar kind of notification was issued during Mulayam Singh Yadav’s government, and Akhilesh Yadav’s government also issued such notifications. It’s a routine exercise and not specific to the Kanwar Yatra. The law requires that names be registered, not identifying anyone by religion… Hindus who eat non-veg go to Muslim shops. In West Bengal, we go to many such shops, which are run by Muslims. The Opposition is trying to divide the people and Asaduddin Owaisi is playing the role of Jinnah,” Majumdar said.

Rajya Sabha MP Kapil Sibal also criticized the directive, warning that such divisive measures would fragment the country. “Kanwar Yatra Route UP directs eateries, including roadside carts, to display the names of the owners! Is this the route to a ‘Viksit Bharat’? Divisive agendas will only divide the country!” Sibal wrote on X.

Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind chief Maulana Arshad Madani condemned the order, calling it a “new game of politics under the guise of religion.” He stated, “This is a completely discriminatory and communal decision, and anti-national elements will get an opportunity to benefit from this.”

PDP president Mehbooba Mufti expressed concerns that the BJP government would next target Dalits. “First, they (BJP) want to trample the rights of the Muslims, then it will be the turn of the Dalits and then backwards and other castes because they want to create a different system and what they did in UP is against the Constitution of this country,” she said.

Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray) MP Sanjay Raut accused the BJP of undermining national unity. “Now you (BJP) are directing food stalls to put up nameplates based on caste and religion? </excerpt>

In a move that has sparked controversy, the Uttar Pradesh government has decided to extend a directive across the state that was initially issued by Muzaffarnagar Police. The order mandates that all eateries along the Kanwar Yatra route display their owners’ names, addresses, and mobile phone numbers. Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami has also confirmed that similar instructions are already in place in Uttarakhand.

The Muzaffarnagar police stated that this advisory, initially for the duration of the Kanwar Yatra, was aimed at preventing any “confusion” and maintaining law and order. However, the directive has drawn heavy criticism from opposition parties, who argue that it unfairly targets Muslim traders.

Sources suggest several prominent eateries along the Kanwar Yatra route to assess the impact of the order. At ‘Delhi Dhaba’ on the Muzaffarnagar-Haridwar highway, the owner had not only displayed his name but also the names and phone numbers of all employees, all of whom were Hindus.

At ‘Shiva Tourist Dhaba,’ the owner had gone further by displaying the Aadhaar cards of all employees, again all Hindus. The owner admitted that he had placed four Muslim employees on leave or terminated their employment following instructions from “the administration and local police,” although the administration denies issuing such directives.

Ibrar, the Muslim owner of ‘Veer Ji Da Dhaba,’ expressed mixed feelings about the directive. While he acknowledged that it allows customers to make informed choices, he also feared losing business and planned to close his dhaba for a few days due to expected slow business.

Reactions from Kanwar Yatris varied. Many supported the decision, saying it would help them make informed choices, while others felt it was unnecessary as their devotion took precedence over where they ate. However, there was a consensus among the yatris on the need to address the issue of price exploitation by dhaba owners during the yatra season, as prices of food and water are often inflated.

The implementation of this directive and its broader implications continue to stir debate, highlighting the sensitive intersection of religious practices, business, and governance in the region.

</excerpt>

Rajya Sabha MP Kapil Sibal has sharply criticized the Uttar Pradesh government’s directive requiring food shops along the Kanwar Yatra route to display their owners’ names. He urged leaders to focus on development rather than divisive issues.

Sibal argued that the ongoing debates about the yatra are distracting from India’s progress and called on the Prime Minister, Home Minister, and Chief Ministers to avoid exploiting these matters for political purposes.

He stressed that pressing economic and political challenges, such as unemployment, are being overshadowed by these less critical issues.

“The politics that is happening on the Kanwar Yatra is not going to take India towards becoming Viksit Bharat. The Prime Minister, Home Minister and Chief Ministers should not raise such issues…The common man has nothing to do with these issues…Such issues will later be raised in Parliament, and issues of economic and political challenges, will not be discussed there,” Rajya Sabha MP Kapil Sibal said while addressing a press conference on Saturday.

Sibal highlighted the government’s “negligence” regarding the unemployment crisis by referencing a recent job opening in Uttar Pradesh that received 47 lakh applications for only 60,000 available positions.

“I would like to especially tell the CMs of UP and Uttarakhand to stop this. Kanwar Yatra has happened before as well. Those who are on the Yatra know everything, where to eat and where not to eat,” he said.

He further criticized the government’s priorities by stating, “With the upcoming budget, everything will be clear to everyone” and stressed the importance of focusing on “educating children” and enhancing conditions for “children and women.”

In contrast, BJP MP Nishikant Dubey defended the guidelines, stating that such a regulation was originally introduced in Uttar Pradesh during the tenures of Akhilesh Yadav and Mayawati.

“This law was made by the Akhilesh Yadav government, Mayawati government. Everybody is equal in this law. What is unconstitutional in this? Hindus, Muslims, Sikhs and Christians all have to install nameplates. BJP respects the law”.

In the midst of the controversy in Uttar Pradesh, the Haridwar Police Administration has also mandated that restaurant owners along the Kanwar Yatra route display their names. Haridwar SSP Padmendra Dobal stated that hotels, dhabas, and restaurants have been instructed to comply, and any violations will result in legal action.

“Regarding the preparations for Kanwar, we have given general instructions to the hotels, dhabas, restaurants, and hawkers on the Kanwar route that they will write the name of the owner on their shops and if they fail to do so, we will take legal action against them. Many times, a situation of dispute arises due to this, hence this decision has been taken by us,” he told reporters.

Samajwadi Party chief and former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav also condemned the move, urging the court to take suo-motu notice of the issue. He described such directives as “social crimes” and warned that they could undermine the region’s peaceful atmosphere.

Taking it to a social media post on X, Akhilesh Yadav wrote, “And what will be known from the name of the person whose name is Guddu, Munna, Chhotu or Fateh? The honourable court should take suo-motto cognizance and investigate the intention of the government behind such administration, and take appropriate punitive action. Such orders are social crimes that want to spoil the peaceful environment of harmony.”

Previously, the Muzaffarnagar Police stated that they have requested all eateries to “voluntarily display” the names of their owners and staff. They clarified that the purpose of this order is not to foster “religious discrimination” but to assist the devotees.

“During the Shravan Kanwar Yatra, a large number of Kanwariyas from neighbouring states, via Western Uttar Pradesh, collect water from Haridwar and pass through Muzaffarnagar district. During the holy month of Shravan, many people, especially Kanwariyas, abstain from certain food items in their diet,” the Muzaffarnagar police stated.

“In the past, such instances have come to light where some shopkeepers selling all types of food items on Kanwar Marg named their shops in such a way that it created confusion among the Kanwariyas and created a law and order situation. To prevent such a recurrence and in view of the faith of the devotees, hotels, dhabas and shopkeepers selling food items on Kanwar Marg have been requested to voluntarily display the names of their owners and employees. The intention of this order is not to create any kind of religious discrimination but only to facilitate the devotees passing through Muzaffarnagar district, counter allegations and save the law and order situation. This system has been prevalent in the past, too,” it added.

</excerpt>

The recent directive from the Uttar Pradesh government, requiring food shops along the Kanwar Yatra route to display their owners’ names, has sparked a debate, with notable figures like actor Sonu Sood and BJP MP Kangana Ranaut weighing in.

Sonu Sood expressed his views on social media platform X, suggesting that shop nameplates should only display “humanity.” His post read, “There should be only one name plate on every shop: ‘HUMANITY'” and quickly garnered attention, with some users interpreting it as a critique of the government’s directive.

In response, Kangana Ranaut took to X to question Sood’s stance, stating, “Agree, Halal should be replaced with ‘HUMANITY.'”

The debate intensified as screenwriter Javed Akhtar also reacted to the controversy, criticizing the administration’s move. He drew a parallel to historical events, saying, “Muzaffarnagar UP police has given instructions that on the route of a particular religious procession in near future all the shops, restaurants, and even vehicles should show the name of the owner prominently and clearly. Why? In Nazi Germany, they used to make only a mark on particular shops and houses.”

On Friday, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath mandated that food and beverage shops along the Kanwar Yatra route must display the name and identity of the operator/owner to maintain the sanctity of the pilgrims’ faith. Additionally, action will be taken against those selling halal-certified products.

The directive has led to a political tussle between the BJP and the opposition, with various public figures and political leaders voicing their opinions on the matter.

Hyderabad MP and AIMIM leader Asaduddin Owaisi voiced strong criticism on Saturday regarding the Uttar Pradesh government’s new directive requiring all shops and eateries along the Kanwar Yatra routes to display the names of their owners and employees.

In a tweet, Owaisi highlighted the implications of the order, sharing a TOI article and stating, “Fear on UP’s kanwar routes: This is the reality of hatred for Indian Muslims.
The Uttar Pradesh government issued this mandate on Friday, stating that it aims to facilitate the smooth conduct of the Kanwar Yatra and to uphold the sanctity of the pilgrimage. Additionally, authorities indicated that they would take action against vendors selling ‘halal-certified’ products.

After UP police mandated all eateries, shops, and food carts along the Kanwar Yatra route in Muzaffarnagar, Saharanpur, and Shamli to display their owners’ names, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath extended this directive statewide on Friday.

Adityanath emphasized the importance of displaying proprietors’ names to prevent confusion among Kanwar Yatra pilgrims.

The directive has drawn criticism from opposition parties and some members of the ruling alliance, who argue it unfairly targets Muslim traders.

A spokesperson for the Uttar Pradesh government indicated that a formal order would be issued soon, confirming the chief minister’s directive aimed at ensuring undisturbed pilgrimages. The order will apply to all Kanwar Yatra routes in the state.

Additionally, Adityanath ordered action against those selling and promoting Halal-certified products. In November 2023, the state government cracked down on mandatory Halal certification for various products, including vegetarian FMCG items and cosmetics.

Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra criticized the move on X, calling it a direct attack on the Indian Constitution, which prohibits discrimination based on caste, religion, or language.

Similarly, RLD State President and MLC Ramashish Rai deemed the directive unconstitutional and demanded its retraction. The RLD is an ally of the BJP.

Following an outcry, UP police clarified on Thursday that displaying owners’ names was voluntary and not compulsory. The directive was initially issued by Muzaffarnagar police, covering about 240 km of the Kanwar Yatra route in the district. Muzaffarnagar SSP Abhishek Singh explained that the appeal aimed to prevent confrontations between shopkeepers and pilgrims, who often avoid non-vegetarian joints.

Kanwariyas, devotees of Lord Shiva, undertake an annual pilgrimage to collect Ganga water and offer it at various shrines. This year’s yatra starts on July 22 and ends on August 2.

The idea was first endorsed by UP minister and Muzaffarnagar MLA Kapil Dev Agarwal, who noted instances of non-vegetarian food being sold at restaurants named after Hindu deities. He clarified that the directive was not against meat vendors but aimed to prevent misleading names.

BSP supremo Mayawati and Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav also criticized the move, citing potential communal discord. CPI(ML) State Secretary Sudhakar Yadav called the directive divisive and unconstitutional, demanding its immediate withdrawal. He accused the BJP government of using the Kanwar Yatra for polarizing politics.

State BJP spokesperson Rakesh Tripathi defended the directive, citing complaints from social organizations about vendors using fake names. He emphasized that Kanwariyas prefer clean, vegetarian outlets and referenced existing laws requiring the display of licenses and proprietors’ names. Tripathi dismissed the controversy as politically motivated.

</excerpt>

As the Kanwar Yatra approaches its start on July 22, preparations are intensifying, with the administration rolling out new guidelines. In a notable development, the police in Uttar Pradesh’s Muzaffarnagar district mandated on Wednesday that all shop owners along the Kanwar Yatra route must prominently display their names outside their establishments.

This directive aims to avoid confusion and ensure transparency during the religious procession. According to the order from the Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) of Muzaffarnagar, shopkeepers along the route must clearly write the shop owner’s name on their premises. This requirement also applies to hotels, dhabas, and carts, aiming to facilitate smoother coordination and accountability.

The decision has sparked debate, with AIMIM President Asaduddin Owaisi criticizing the measure, alleging it could marginalize Muslims from participating in the Yatra. On the other hand, activist Swami Chakrapani has praised the directive as a positive step. Earlier advisories from the Uttar Pradesh government included restrictions on carrying weapons during the Yatra, which is scheduled from July 22 to August 19. Director General of Police (DGP) Prashant Kumar announced traffic diversions, banning heavy vehicles on specified routes, and emphasized adherence to Supreme Court guidelines on DJ sound limits.

Additionally, liquor and meat shops along the Yatra routes will be closed, and authorities are instructed to prevent stray animals from obstructing the pilgrims’ path. Surveillance through CCTV and drones will monitor the event to ensure safety and security.

Efforts are underway to streamline traffic on crucial routes like the Ayodhya-Basti road, restricting access to emergency vehicles only. Police officials are working closely with registered organizations and devotees to ensure the Kanwar Yatra proceeds smoothly and orderly.

Key camps have been strategically established in Shahdara and Northeast districts, equipped with metal detectors and bag checks at sensitive locations. The route through these districts will be divided into zones to facilitate better monitoring, ensuring smooth movement of devotees and preventing congestion.

In a significant technological upgrade, more than 300 CCTV cameras will be installed along the route, complemented by drone surveillance to monitor critical areas effectively. These measures aim to bolster security and provide real-time monitoring capabilities, enhancing overall safety management.

A dedicated communication network will facilitate seamless coordination among law enforcement agencies, enabling quick responses to any emergencies that may arise. Furthermore, traffic diversions will be implemented at major border points and key roads like Rani Jhansi Road and NH-8 to manage traffic flow and minimize disruptions during the yatra.

DCP officials from Shahdara and Northeast districts have conducted meetings with stakeholders to ensure all necessary measures are in place for a safe and organized Kanwar Yatra. The preparations also include altering routes for heavy commercial vehicles to mitigate potential traffic congestion.

The Kanwar Yatra, a significant religious pilgrimage, draws devotees from across the country who undertake the journey to fetch holy water from the Ganges. With these advanced technological interventions, authorities aim to uphold security standards and ensure a smooth experience for all participants during this revered event.

</excerpt>

In anticipation of the upcoming Kanwar Yatra, traffic authorities have announced significant changes affecting National Highway 58 (NH 58) linking Delhi to Haridwar, as well as the Delhi-Meerut Expressway.

The yatra, expected to attract a large number of devotees, will lead to phased suspensions of vehicular traffic from July 22 to August 4.

Dhruv Kant Thakur, Additional Director General of Police for the Meerut zone, chaired a meeting with officials from 14 districts across western Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Haryana, and Delhi to finalize the traffic management strategy. Starting July 22, heavy vehicles will be restricted from using NH 58 and the Delhi-Meerut Expressway. From July 25, only light and medium vehicles will be allowed on the left side of NH 58 for travel from Delhi to Haridwar.

With the influx of kanwariyas expected to peak in late July ahead of Shivratri on August 2, stricter measures will be implemented. Therefore, from July 29 to August 4, all vehicle types will face a complete ban on NH 58 and the Delhi-Meerut Expressway between Haridwar and Meerut.

Local police have been tasked with developing alternative routes and diversion plans to ensure smooth traffic flow during this period. A dedicated WhatsApp group covering the 14 districts will facilitate real-time coordination among officials to manage the increased number of devotees effectively.

Security measures are also being heightened to ensure the safety of kanwariyas throughout their journey. A high-level meeting held on July 6 in Meerut, attended by the Chief Secretary, DGP, and other officials, will further assess and strengthen preparations for the yatra.

The Kanwar Yatra traditionally attracts thousands of devotees who undertake the pilgrimage on foot, carrying holy water from the Ganges to offer at Lord Shiva temples on Shivratri.

Speaking at the Prabudha Sammelan in Muzaffarnagar, CM Yogi stated that the city’s positive change occurred when power was given to the right people.

“Previously, votes cast in favor of wrong people plunged Western UP into anarchy and lawlessness where everyone felt insecure. But, when you elected the right parties and people, lawlessness and chaos ended and faith was respected,” CM Yogi said.

He urged citizens to exercise their democratic rights, emphasizing the significance of voting for the right candidates. CM Yogi also spoke about the government’s commitment to revitalizing Shuktirtha and acknowledged Chaudhary Charan Singh’s posthumous Bharat Ratna award, highlighting his contributions to farmers’ rights.

CM Yogi recalled the tense atmosphere in Muzaffarnagar before 2016-2017 and emphasized the community’s trust in Prime Minister Modi’s leadership. He also mentioned the establishment of a global standard sports university in Sardhana, Muzaffarnagar, and promised job opportunities for Muzaffarnagar’s daughters who excel in international sports events.

Addressing security concerns, CM Yogi vowed unwavering attention to security matters and warned wrongdoers of serious repercussions. He also discussed initiatives in the budget to provide free electricity to private tube well operators and promote solar panels.

The conference was attended by BJP Lok Sabha candidate Sanjeev Balyan, state government minister Anil Kumar, Kapil Dev Aggarwal, MLA Rajpal Balyan, and BJP regional president Satyendra Sisodia.

Delhi Police is very cautious about the Kanwar Yatra to be held in this holy month of Sawan. The police have made security arrangements for the Kanwar’s at different places. After two years, the Kanwar Yatra is happening again this month of Sawan, and more people are expected to visit this year.

At the same time, the Delhi Administration is also cautious about this Yatra; more than 2,000 Delhi, Traffic Police personnel will be deployed for the smooth movement of Kanwar pilgrims and vehicles.

Moreover, Delhi Traffic Police personnel will be stationed on various routes in Shahdara districts bordering Uttar Pradesh. So that Kanwar passengers do not have to face any trouble. Apart from traffic personnel, Delhi Police and paramilitary forces security officers will also be present in the eastern parts of Delhi.
