Meet Tamil Nadu BJP’s New State President

<excerpt>BJP appoints Nainar Nagendran as Tamil Nadu state president, tasking him with leading the party into the crucial 2026 Assembly elections.
</excerpt>

In a pre-poll strategic development prior to the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly polls, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has promoted Nainar Nagendran as the new Tamil Nadu unit president. He is replacing K Annamalai, who is a retired IPS officer with an aggressive style of functioning.

Nainar Nagendran was the sole candidate for the chief post, and his nomination remained unchallenged. His election marks a change in the party leadership style in the Dravidian-dominated politics of Tamil Nadu.

From AIADMK Loyalist to BJP Leader

Born in Vadiveeswaram on October 16, 1960, Nagendran entered politics with J Jayalalithaa’s AIADMK. He was a minister from 2001 to 2006, having important portfolios such as Electricity, Industry, and Transport. But when the AIADMK came back to power in 2011, he was excluded from the cabinet, leading him to ultimately switch to the BJP in 2017, only a few days after Jayalalithaa died.

He was the vice president of Tamil Nadu BJP since 2020 and won the 2021 Assembly elections from Tirunelveli on a BJP ticket. He also commands the BJP’s legislative party in the state.

Heading the BJP’s Tamil Nadu Mission

As the 13th president of the BJP Tamil Nadu unit, Nagendran is likely to plan for broadening the party’s footprint in a state dominated long by the Dravidian parties such as DMK and AIADMK. His tenure in both state administrations and elections places him in a strategic position ahead of the next poll.

Past Controversies and Legal Scrutiny

Nagendran’s political career has not been void of scandal. In 2006, an investigation unearthed assets outside his declared income while he was in office as a minister. The Directorate of Vigilance charged him, his wife, and four relatives with a ₹3.9 crore disproportionate assets case under the Prevention of Corruption Act in 2010.

He also drew flak in 2018 for issuing death threats to Tamil lyricist Vairamuthu for making controversial remarks about Andal. “There is no need to hesitate in killing people who speak ill of Hinduism,” he had stated.

Currently leading the BJP’s Tamil Nadu unit, Nagendran has the twin task of increasing the party’s reach and putting the past behind him.

H Raja, who has been appointed as the convener of a 6-member committee to oversee the party’s activities in Annamalai’s absence, announced that the focus is on renewing existing memberships and enrolling new members to reach the 1 crore target. “We have fixed a target of 1 crore members to be enrolled within 45 days up to October 15. Apart from that, other political activities would continue as planned,” Raja.

Addressing Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin’s recent visit to the US, Raja expressed skepticism about the impact of the signed Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) on actual investments in the state. “Let the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu say what happened after his Dubai visit. How many thousands of crores have been invested in Tamil Nadu because of his visit? Has anything happened? Nothing. So like that, today MoUs may be coming, let us see if actual investment comes,” Raja remarked.

During his visit to the US, Chief Minister Stalin’s government signed several MoUs with multinational companies, pledging significant investments in Tamil Nadu.

The 6-member committee, appointed by BJP President JP Nadda, will coordinate with the state core committee and make decisions regarding the party’s activities in Tamil Nadu during Annamalai’s three-month educational training program in the UK, which began in September.

The BJP stated that these actions violated party rules and harmed the party’s reputation. The party warned its members not to associate with these two leaders.

</excerpt>

BJP Tamil Nadu state president may have not won the Lok Sabha seat from Coimbatore but he is very upbeat about the performance of the saffron party in the new term. BJP leader Narendra Modi was sworn as the Prime Minister of India for the third consecutive time on June 9 and Annamalai was all praise for his party leader.

Taking to his social media, Annamalai wrote on X (formerly Twitter), “In 2014, he was the change our people yearned for. In the last 10 years, he brought about a change – in the way our government functioned; in the outlook of developed nations on Bharat; that reminded our Nation of our Glorious & Forgotten history; that made the government programmes accessible & made many programmes saturate; curbing corruption with an iron fist. He is the Change! Congratulations to Shri @narendramodi avl for being sworn in as the Prime Minister of India for the 3rd consecutive time, the 2nd Indian PM to have achieved this Monumental feat. A proud moment for every karyakartha of the world’s largest political party, the @BJP4India & the NDA.”

The 39-year-old former IPS officer lost the Lok Sabha Elections 2024 from the Coimbatore constituency to rival Ganapathy Rajkumar of Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK).

Annamalai joined the BJP in 2019 and became the president of the party’s Tamil Nadu unit in 2021. There were rumors he would be inducted into the new council of ministers on June 9 but that did not turn out to be true.

Meanwhile, a rift has emerged between Tamilisai Soundararajan, former Tamil Nadu BJP chief and Annamalai. Their supporters engaged in a war of words on social media on Sunday. Annamalai has been facing criticism within the party in Tamil Nadu post the poor results for the BJP in the Lok Sabha elections in the state.

</excerpt>

As preparations are underway for PM Modi’s historic third consecutive swearing-in ceremony, sources suggest that prominent BJP leaders from southern India, including K Annamalai and Suresh Gopi, may be included in the new government’s Council of Ministers.

Sources indicate that once Annamalai is inducted into the Council of Ministers, a new individual will take over the role of Tamil Nadu BJP President. Annamalai, a 39-year-old former IPS officer, lost the 2024 Lok Sabha Elections in the Coimbatore constituency to Ganapathy Rajkumar of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK). He joined the BJP in 2019 and became the Tamil Nadu unit president in 2021.

Suresh Gopi: The Saffron Star Of South

The BJP’s efforts in South India culminated in a historic achievement with the party’s debut from Kerala in the 18th Lok Sabha election. Suresh Gopi, a famous Malayalam film industry action hero, won a landmark victory in the Thrissur Lok Sabha seat by a margin of 74,686 votes. He secured wins in five of the seven Thrissur assembly constituencies.

With a total of 412,338 votes, Gopi surpassed Left Democratic Front (LDF) leader and former agriculture minister V.S. Sunil Kumar, who received 337,652 votes.

However, Gopi emphasized that he was not aiming to become a Union minister, stating, “Please do not confine me to a room. As an MP, I can do the work of various ministries. I do not want to be a minister. There can be new revolutionary working platforms.”

“All I want is that when I go with a project for the people of Kerala with determination, the ministries concerned should implement it,” he said when asked which ministry he would prefer to head.

He began his career as an Indian Police Service (IPS) officer, where he served in various roles, including as the Deputy Commissioner of Police in Bengaluru. Annamalai gained widespread recognition for his efforts in maintaining law and order and combating organized crime during his tenure in the police force.

Entry into Politics

In 2019, Annamalai resigned from the IPS, citing personal reasons, and announced his entry into politics. He joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), expressing his commitment to working for the welfare of the people and bringing about positive change in society. Annamalai’s decision to enter politics received considerable attention and support from both his admirers and critics.

Political Involvement

In the Coimbatore constituency, DMK leader Ganapathy P Rajkumar and AIADMK’s Singai Ramachandran are contesting against the BJP state President. Annamalai emphasized that he would quit politics if anyone could prove that a BJP member attempted to influence them, stating, “What DMK, AIADMK is doing in Coimbatore, everybody is watching it. More than 1000 crores have been spent in Coimbatore. If they can bring one voter in front of the media to say that some BJP person is trying to influence them, I will leave politics the same day because I am running in this election as a matter of principle.”

He further alleged, “DMK thinks that it can buy people with money and AIADMK is also on the same boat. Officials in Coimbatore have gone blind for the last 2-3 days. Our people repeatedly have complained to the collector. The action has not been taken, it is not neutral.”

Annamalai asserted that the BJP would secure over 25 per cent of the votes independently and win in double digits. Expressing confidence in the electorate, he stated, “Today I have done my democratic duty and it is an important duty for every citizen of our country because India has a functioning democracy where citizens make democracy to function. We are extremely confident that people will repost their trust in good people and governance. I am extremely confident that Tamil Nadu will witness a historic change. People will honour our all candidates for their hard work.”

Addressing the governance, he mentioned, “The people have seen 10 years of governance (BJP at centre) and they want it to continue for five more years. The opposition is clueless. The INDIA bloc is yet to announce its Prime Minister candidate. The people of Tamil Nadu deserve an answer. Tamil Nadu has benefitted on every single point, be it funds coming, be it the glory and honour given to the Tamil language.” Annamalai faces tough competition from parties like DMK and AIADMK, which wield significant influence in Tamil Nadu with their dedicated supporters.

</excerpt>

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in a public address at Tamil Nadu’s Mettupalayam, took aim at the opposition bloc, INDIA, suggesting that their formation lacked confidence in India’s capabilities. He accused the ruling parties in the state, DMK and Congress, of harboring a single-minded agenda of retaining power through deceptive means. Modi underscored the successful rollout of India’s indigenous COVID-19 vaccine, contrasting it with skepticism voiced by some members of the opposition. He criticized Congress for its failure to alleviate poverty despite being in power for decades, contrasting it with the NDA government’s achievement of lifting millions out of poverty.

Furthermore, Modi emphasized the BJP’s commitment to inclusivity by highlighting the appointment of a tribal woman as India’s President, a move he claimed faced opposition from the INDIA alliance. He also accused the Congress-DMK coalition of practicing discrimination during their rule, contrasting it with the BJP’s vision of ‘Sabka Sath, Sabka Vikas’ (Collective Effort, Inclusive Growth).

Modi reiterated the government’s initiatives aimed at improving the lives of marginalized communities, such as providing housing, water, and electricity to millions, especially those from SC-ST and OBC backgrounds. Riding on an open-roofed vehicle, Annamalai kicked off his campaign for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.

“MK Stalin and DMK are the enemies of Tamil Nadu and the people of the state. Today, it is only the BJP that is in the field and campaigning for the election,” Annamalai said, emphasizing the BJP’s strong presence in the electoral arena.

“June 4 will attest to the fact that Tamil Nadu will come Modiji’s way, that is, in a very big way,” Annamalai earlier stated, expressing his confidence in the BJP’s prospects in Tamil Nadu.

Annamalai, a former Karnataka cadre IPS officer, joined the BJP in 2020 after resigning from the service in 2019. He assumed the role of BJP state president a year later.

The Lok Sabha elections in Tamil Nadu are scheduled for April 19, with all 39 seats going to polls in the first phase. The results, along with those from other phases, will be counted on June 4.

In the 2019 Lok Sabha polls, the DMK secured a sweeping victory in Tamil Nadu, winning 23 seats and garnering the majority of the total votes polled at 33.2 per cent. Its ally, the Congress, won 8 seats with 12.9 per cent of the votes. Other parties like CPI, CPI (M), and IUML also secured seats, while two seats went to Independents.

The general elections for 543 Lok Sabha seats will be conducted in seven phases, starting from April 19. Approximately 97 crore voters are eligible to cast their votes in this election.

In a scathing retort to the DMK leader over his remarks, Annamalai took to his official handle on X to post, “The only resolve that the Gopalapuram Family has is to accumulate wealth beyond the State GDP. Thiru @Udhaystalin, you, your father, or his or your idealogue have a bought-out idea from Christian missionaries & the idea of those missionaries was to cultivate ******* like you to parrot their malicious ideology.”
Taking a further swipe at Udhayanidhi, the BJP state chief posted, “Tamil Nadu is a land of spiritualism. The best you can do is to hold a Mic in an event like this & rant out your frustration!”
Echoing his sentiments, the BJP’s IT cell head, Amit Malviya, said, the DMK minister was calling for “genocide of 80 per cent of the population of Bharat”.
“Udhayanidhi Stalin, son of Tamilnadu CM MK Stalin, and a minister in the DMK Govt has linked Sanatana Dharma to malaria and dengue… He is of the opinion that it must be eradicated and not merely opposed. In short, he is calling for genocide of 80% population of Bharat, who follow Sanatan Dharma,” Malviya posted on X.

We have only disclosed the direct assets, their shareholdings in a company and the valuation of the properties they own.” He added, “We haven’t gone beyond it. The most concerning question is, how is DMK becoming part of the largest money laundering business worldwide.”
