Indian Tourist Shot Dead in Jordan While Attempting to Cross Border into Israel

One Kerala man, traveling on a tourist visa with three others, was allegedly gunned down in Jordan by security personnel when two of them were trying to cross the border illegally, said an Indian Embassy letter in Amman.

The victim has been named as Thomas Gabriel Perera, 47, a resident of Thumba in the vicinity of Thiruvananthapuram. Another person, Edison, 43, who was accompanying him, received gunshot wounds but returned to India.

The Embassy has learnt of the sad demise of an Indian national in unfortunate circumstances. The Embassy is in touch with the family of the deceased and is working closely with Jordanian authorities for transportation of the mortal remains of the deceased. @MEAIndia

Incident Took Place Near Jordan-Israel Border

As per the letter written by the Indian Embassy, the incident happened on February 10, five days after the team reached Jordan. The letter from the embassy read, “Thomas and another person were trying to cross the Jordan border at Karkak district illegally. The security forces tried to stop them, but they did not listen to the warning. The guards opened fire on them. One bullet hit Thomas in his head and he died on the spot. Later, his body was sent to a local hospital.”

The letter, also signed by Pradeek Kumar, Indian Embassy Attache, went on to state that Indian authorities would visit the hospital to verify Thomas’ identity before making arrangements to take his mortal remains to India. The letter also indicated to the family that some repatriation expenses would be their responsibility.

Relatives of Thomas and Edison explained that the two were part of a group of four who traveled to Jordan on February 5 with the help of a Keralite who works in the nation. The Karak Governorate of Jordan, where the accident happened, is adjacent to the Dead Sea and is quite near Israel.

A relative of Thomas disclosed:

“We were told that they were shot by the forces while trying to move to Israel.” Their families did not know anything about their locations for a few days. Worried, they went to the Indian Embassy, which subsequently sent an email informing them of Thomas’ death on February 28. The family, however, only received the email on March 1.

Edison, who survived the attack, was arrested and treated for bullet wounds before being incarcerated in Jordan. He was finally deported to India. The two others in the group are still in a Jordanian jail.

Non-Resident Keralites Affairs (NORKA) CEO Ajith Kolassery pointed out that the incident was one of illegal migration.

Iran attacks Israel

The medical supplies and medications that were dropped by air around midnight on Sunday were parachuted to a field hospital in Gaza operated by the Jordanians.

Taking to X, Jordan King Abdullah posted, “Our fearless air force personnel air-dropped at midnight urgent medical aid to the Jordanian field hospital in Gaza. This is our duty to aid our brothers and sisters injured in the war on Gaza. We will always be there for our Palestinian brethren.”

The Times of Israel, citing Jordan’s official Petra news agency, stated that the airdrop was conducted because supplies for Jordan’s field hospital in Gaza were about to run low. According to The Times of Israel, the news agency also released an image of a single box being loaded onto a military aircraft that was covered in the Jordanian flag. It’s reportedly still unknown if the assistance made it to the hospital.

Meanwhile, Jordan’s Queen Rania said that the rejections of a ceasefire in Gaza are “morally reprehensible” and need justification for the deaths of thousands of civilians.
The Jordanian monarch in an interview with CNN, said that Israel’s bid to rid Gaza of Hamas is “short-sighted and not entirely rational “because “the root cause of this conflict is an illegal occupation.”
“If we do not address these root causes, then you can kill the combatants, but you cannot kill the cause. Under the rubble of these destroyed buildings will emerge another group more determined, and more motivated to do what Hamas did,” she added.

The State Department announced in a statement that US Secretary of State Antony Blinken will travel to five different countries, with his visit to India to take part in the 2+2 Ministerial Dialogue in November marking the end of the trip. Israel, Jordan, Japan, South Korea, and India will all be visited by Blinken. Blinken will travel to India with Lloyd Austin, the secretary of defense for the United States. The US delegation will meet with senior Indian officials, including Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, and others, to discuss Indo-Pacific developments and bilateral and international issues.

Protests and skirmishes broke out in the West Bank, Lebanon, and Jordan amid the explosion at a Gaza Strip hospital that claimed hundreds of lives, according to a report published by The Times of Israel on Wednesday. The Times of Israel reports that hundreds of people protested the explosion in the West Bank by taking to the streets. Palestinian forces in Ramallah used tear gas on protesters demanding the resignation of Mahmoud Abbas, the president of the Palestinian Authority, in order to subdue the crowd. According to The Times of Israel, the demonstrators want Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas to resign due to his accommodative demeanor since Israel and Hamas started fighting in Gaza earlier this month.

In videos, the protesters in Ramallah were seen chanting “The people want the fall of the President.”
In Jordan, protesters tried to storm the Israeli embassy with videos circulating on X (Twitter) showing an angry crowd surrounding the building and attempting to force their way inside.
In Lebanon, Lebanese terror group and Iranian proxy Hezbollah called for a “day of rage” to condemn the hospital blast, as hundreds of demonstrators also gathered at the French and US embassies in protest.
According to The Times of Israel, Hezbollah, blamed the hospital blast on Israel, calling it a “massacre” and a “brutal crime.”
Additionally, Jordan King Abdullah II has marked the Israel attack on Gaza as “brutal” and asked Israel to end it.

Israel-Hamas war: Biden to visit Israel, Jordan on Wednesday

The White House announced on Monday that US President Joe Biden would travel to Israel on Wednesday to show his support for Israel in the wake of the Hamas attack. He would also travel to Jordan for a summit meeting with the leaders of Jordan, Egypt, and the Palestinian Authority.

Then, Biden will fly to Amman, Jordan, where he will meet with Mahmoud Abbas, the president of the Palestinian Authority, His Majesty King Abdullah of Jordan, and Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, the president of Egypt.

In a phone call earlier that day, the US president discussed the situation in the region following the Hamas terrorist attack in Israel with his counterparts El-Sisi of Egypt and Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani of Iraq. During the call, Biden and El-Sisi discussed the need to maintain stability throughout the Middle East as well as ongoing efforts to address the deteriorating humanitarian crisis in Gaza in coordination with the UN, Jordan, the Palestinian Authority, Israel, and other regional partners.

“Biden condemned Hamas’ terrorist attack on Israel and reiterated that Hamas does not stand for the Palestinian people’s right to dignity and self-determination. The two leaders agreed to continue their close coordination to prevent the conflict from widening and ensure humanitarian assistance reaches those in need,” said a readout of the call.

The significance of the bilateral alliance between Iraq and the United States, as outlined in the Strategic Framework Agreement between our two nations, was also reaffirmed by Biden and Al-Sudani. Finally, they agreed to routine team coordination in order to advance shared goals and maintain regional stability over the ensuing weeks, according to the readout. Israeli Minister of Defense Yoav Gallant and US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin also spoke to further discuss Israel’s operations to restore security following the Hamas attack. According to a press release, the Secretary reaffirmed the US commitment to keep advancing security assistance and preventing conflict escalation.
