</excerpt>

New Delhi: Congress on Wednesday held the meeting of its senior leaders after the Indian government announced ceasefire with Pakistan and demanded the government to convene a special session of Parliament and also an all party meeting to be chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The party also said that Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi will address the media on the ceasefire issue on Friday in the national capital.

The Congress had called the meeting of its senior leaders at the party old headquarters 24 Akbar Road here, which was attended by 23 senior leaders including Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi, Party’s General secretary (organisation) KC Venugopal, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, Avinash Pandey, Randeep Singh Surjewala, Pawan Khera, Jairam Ramesh, Sachin Pilot among others.

After the meeting, addressing the media, Ramesh, who is also the party’s communication incharge while hitting back at the government said that the way in which US President Donald Trump announced the ceasefire between India and Pakistan was surprising.

He questioned the Prime Minister’s silence on the issue and asked, “Why Prime Minister Modi is silent on US President Donald Trump announcing that he negotiated ceasefire.”

Putting forth the grand old party’s demand with the government, Ramesh said: “We demand that the an all party meeting meeting chaired by Prime Minister Modi should be coneved.

“We demand that a special session of Parliament is convened,” he said.

Jairam also slammed the government over the NDA Chief Ministers scheduled on May 25 in the national capital and said that only NDA CMs have been called while leaving the Chief Ministers of Karnataka, Himachal Pradesh, Telanagana and other states. “Is this isn’t the politicisitation of Operation Sindoor,” he asked. He accused the government saying this is maximum silence on real issues and maximum politicisation.

Sharing the prgramme of the party, the Congress leader said that Rahul Gandhi will be on a day visit to Bihar’s Darbhanga and Patna on May 15.

“After returning from Bihar, Rahul Gandhi to address media on May 16,” he said.

Meanwhile, Khera said that this was the third meeting of the Congress in last few days after Pahalgam and after Operation Sindoor.

Khera pointed out that the Congress has given its full support to government.

Hitting back at the government, Khera said that why did US President announce mediation between India Pakistan. Earlier we have not seen such a trend, added.

Taking a swipe at the government for US interference over Kashmir, Khera said that Trump treated India and Pakistan on same bar and how did PM Modi accept that.

Khera said, “All these points were raised during the meeting today that why such a silence on this issue. Prime Minister Modi is silent, his External Affairs Minister is also silent. Who is taking such decisions?”

Referring to the Prime Minister’s address to the nation after the ceasefire was announced following Operation Sindoor, Khera said, “PM Modi should have refuted the claims of US President in his address to the nation. Trump once again made similar remarks during his visit to Saudi Arabia.”

He also asked that what are the demands the Indian government has kept before Pakistan before announcing ceasefire. He further said that no one knows the details of the ceasefire.

“S Jaishankar should come forward and give details of the ceasefire. Why did US President announced ceasefire, what are the details of ceasefire should be announced,” he added.

The Congress leader fuether announced that the grand old party will bring out Jai Hind rallies across the country in the coming days.

</excerpt>

The Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) has suspended its academic partnership with Turkey’s Inonu University citing “national security considerations.” The move comes amid escalating diplomatic tensions between India and Turkey, especially after Turkey’s open support to Pakistan during recent tensions.

In an X (formerly Twitter) post, JNU verified the suspension of its Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Turkish university, saying, “JNU stands with the nation.”

Due to National Security considerations, the MoU between JNU and Inonu University, Türkiye stands suspended until further notice.
JNU stands with the Nation. #NationFirst @rashtrapatibhvn @VPIndia @narendramodi @PMOIndia @AmitShah @DrSJaishankar @MEAIndia @EduMinOfIndia

— Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) (@JNU_official_50) May 14, 2025

As per the official website of the university, the MoU had been signed on February 3, 2025, and was initially supposed to be valid until February 2, 2028.

Decision in line with broader government measures

JNU’s action coincided with the day the Indian government temporarily blocked TRT World, a Turkish news broadcaster, from posting on its X accounts for “propaganda and misinformation against India.” The government’s move is a reflection of mounting national disapproval of Turkey’s position at a time of increased tensions with Pakistan.

JNU’s action is also reflective of a wider mood in India with growing demands for boycotting Turkish goods and services.

Operation Sindoor and Turkey’s controversial role

Public anger toward Turkey has intensified since the launch of Operation Sindoor, India’s military response to the deadly Pahalgam terror attack that claimed the lives of 26 civilians. India accused Pakistan of using drones—reportedly of Turkish origin—in its retaliatory strikes. This use of military technology contributed significantly to New Delhi’s frustration.

After four days of trans-border drone and missile attacks, India and Pakistan on May 10 agreed to stop military operations. But Ankara’s clear support for Islamabad in this episode further soured its bilateral ties with India.

Economic and tourism impact

The geopolitical tensions have spilled over into the tourism and business sectors. Top travel booking companies such as MakeMyTrip and EaseMyTrip have reported a precipitous decline in bookings to Turkey and Azerbaijan, with many Indian travelers cancelling trips.

MakeMyTrip issued a public statement voicing support for India’s armed forces:
“It stands with our country and in profound respect for our military, we are likewise vigorously supportive of this stance and recommend avoidance of all unnecessary travel to Azerbaijan and Turkey. We have already stopped all promotions and deals on our site for the purpose of discouraging visits to these two countries.”

While these sites still offer flight options to Turkey and Azerbaijan, their tone is a reflection of the dominant national mood.

Future of India-Turkey relations in doubt

Suspension of JNU’s agreement and more widespread action against Turkish institutions mark a chill in diplomatic and educational relations. With India’s trade relations with Turkey also set to come under pressure, the full extent of this diplomatic gap may become clearer in the coming months.

</excerpt>

Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) has suspended Professor Rajeev Sijariya following his arrest by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in connection with a bribery case involving the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC). The decision came after a committee reviewed the allegations and advised the university’s vice chancellor on the matter.

Allegations and Arrest in NAAC Bribery Case

According to the FIR, Sijariya was among ten individuals detained in a corruption case linked to NAAC. Investigators discovered that the NAAC inspection team allegedly demanded ₹1.8 crore from Andhra Pradesh’s Koneru Lakshmaiah Education Foundation (KLEF) in exchange for a favorable accreditation rating, as reported by The Indian Express.

Initially, the team set a high price, but after negotiations, they reportedly agreed on a lower amount. The bribe was structured as ₹10 lakh for the chairman, ₹3 lakh for each member, along with additional perks, including a laptop and travel expenses for a member’s wife.

Furthermore, the FIR claims that Sijariya played a significant role in arranging the deal. At first, he allegedly demanded ₹1.3 crore for himself but later settled for ₹28 lakh.

Past Controversies and Faculty Complaints

Notably, this is not the first controversy surrounding Sijariya. In 2023, his two-year tenure as Dean of JNU’s Atal Bihari Vajpayee School of Management and Entrepreneurship (ABVSME) was cut short. The decision came after multiple faculty members accused him of “undemocratic decision-making” and “instigating students against faculty members.”

JNU’s Decision to Suspend Sijariya

Following these developments, The Indian Express reported that a three-member committee examined the situation and suggested his suspension. As a result, JNU Vice Chancellor Santishree Pandit issued an official suspension order.

The order stated, “Rajeev Sijariya… has prima facie been found to be involved in the corruption case related to allegations of bribery for securing a favourable A++ NAAC accreditation rating to KLEF… The undersigned in exercise of her powers… hereby places … Sijariya under suspension with immediate effect from the services of the University pending the outcome of the CBI inquiry/findings and departmental inquiry.”

Sijariya’s Background and Academic Credentials

Sijariya joined JNU in 2020 during the tenure of former Vice Chancellor M. Jagadesh Kumar. His academic qualifications include a PhD in Management, specializing in Consumer Behaviour, an MBA in Marketing and Human Resource Management, and an MSc in Physics (Electronics).

With over 25 years of professional experience, he has dedicated 21 years to academia and administrative leadership. However, his recent arrest and suspension have put his career under scrutiny.

</excerpt>

The Jawaharlal Nehru University Teachers’ Association (JNUTA) initiated a 24-hour hunger strike and protest today against the university administration’s alleged high-handed, arbitrary, and discriminatory approach to faculty appointments and promotions under the Career Advancement Scheme (CAS).

Despite inclement weather, numerous faculty members participated in the protest, showing solidarity with colleagues, including the JNUTA President, who were undertaking a 24-hour fast. Former DUTA and FEDCUTA President Nandita Narayan, and elected Delhi University Academic Council member Maya John joined the protest, highlighting the common struggles faced by faculty across different universities. The Ambedkar University Teachers’ Association (AUDFA) also expressed solidarity, receiving reciprocal support from the JNUTA.

The protest is fueled by a stalled and distorted promotion process affecting nearly every university teacher. The process has been marred by selectivity, excessive delays, and alleged coercion of faculty to compromise their entitlements to secure promotions. The situation has worsened with a complete halt to promotions, despite a growing backlog of eligible candidates. This is seen as a deliberate tactic to prevent teachers’ representatives from addressing concerns about harassment, victimization, and the denial of legitimate rights.

The JNUTA contends that promotions are being weaponized to subdue faculty and systematically discriminate based on social, religious, academic, or ideological backgrounds, as well as for criticizing the university administration. Similar discriminatory practices are observed in the appointment process, with a decline in academic oversight and checks and balances. The role of academic departments in forming expert panels and their representation in selection committees has been undermined.

The integrity of the faculty appointment process, compromised under the previous Vice Chancellor, remains questionable. This has led to numerous unfilled positions, particularly in reserved categories. The JNUTA views these issues as symptoms of a broader erosion of democratic governance at JNU under both the previous and current Vice Chancellors. Centralization of power, lack of transparency, and accountability have paved the way for increased government interference and erosion of the university’s autonomy. The chaotic JNU admission process is another example of these consequences.

</excerpt>

India’s prestigious university Jawaharlal Nehru University, famously called JNU, is set to make an addition in their academic offerings. They are going to Constitute three new centres for Hindu, Buddhist and Jain studies.

As per official notification announced on July 9, this addition is set to be a part of the school of sanskrit and Indic Studies.

‘The Executive Council in its meeting held on 29.05.2024 has approved the recommendation of the committee constituted to explore and recommend on NEP-2020 and Indian Knowledge System and its further implementation in the University and establishing of following centres within the School of Sanskrit and Indic Studies.’ announced Friday’s notification.

This decision was made granted approval by JNU’s executive Council on May 29. This decision reflects a significant step taken towards the integration of National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 and enhancing the promotion of Indian Knowledge system within college.

For this, a committee was established to look for the ways to implement NEP 2020 at JNU.

Earlier in a similar move, Delhi university (DU) had constituted a centre for Hindu studies in a previous year.

The DU’s centre currently provides master’s degree and plans to launch undergraduate courses in the coming future.

In addition, Delhi University also has a department dedicated to Buddhist studies and earlier in March, it has acquired govt’s approval to constitute a centre for advanced studies in Buddhism at a cost of 35 crores.

The polls began after a delay of over an hour due to the time taken for the selection of polling agents, with the scheduled start time being 9 am.

Students gathered around the polling stations hours before the polling began, engaging in slogans and chants. ABVP supporters were heard chanting ‘Jai Shree,’ while Left groups used drums to chant ‘lal Salam’ in unison.

A total of 7,751 students are registered to cast their votes in the elections scheduled for March 22.

The Delhi High Court appointed former Supreme Court judge, Justice V Ramasubramanian, as the observer for the JNU Students Union elections while hearing a plea on the polls. The plea, filed by a JNU student, sought direction to frame appropriate university statutes, regulations, or mechanisms for conducting JNUSU elections, incorporating the recommendations prescribed in the Lyngdoh Commission.

The students’ union comprises four central panel positions: President, Vice President, General Secretary, and Joint Secretary. According to the election commission, eight candidates (1 woman, 7 men) have been finalized for the president position, and 4 candidates (1 woman, 3 men) are contesting for the position of vice president.

The ABVP has nominated Umesh Chandra Ajmira for the post of President and Deepika Sharma for Vice President. Arjun Anand and Govind Dangi have been nominated as candidates for General Secretary and Joint Secretary, respectively.

The United Left representatives from the AISA, SFI, DSF, and AISF panel have fielded Dhananjay as the Presidential candidate, Avijit Ghosh for Vice-President, Swati Singh for General Secretary, and Sajid for Joint Secretary as part of the left unity panel.

The JNUSU elections are being held after a gap of four years, with the previous elections being stalled due to the COVID-19 pandemic and not being conducted thereafter. The last JNUSU election was won by the left-backed SFI candidate Aishe Ghosh in 2019. The left student outfits had allied to contest in the 2019 polls under the banner of The United-Left alliance, which included a coalition of AISA, SFI, DSF, and AISF.

</excerpt>

Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) affiliated students clashed with left leaning organization students in Delhi’s Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) late on Thursday night. The two group of students clashed at the School of Languages late on Thursday night. The clash between the two parties reportedly took place over the selection of election committee members. A university official said that some injured students have been admitted to Safdarjung Hospital.

A purported video of this incident circulating on social media shows a person beating some students with a stick, while in another video a student is seen throwing a bicycle at another group.

In the second video, the mob is surrounding and beating some students, while the security guards are seen trying to separate the warring groups. Students of ABVP and left organizations have filed police complaints against each other.

The JNU administration is yet to issue any statement on the clash and the number of students injured has also not been confirmed.

A bench of Justices Bela M Trivedi and Pankaj Mithal allowed him to withdraw his bail application.

Senior advocate Kapil Sibal, representing Khalid, informed the bench that the petition is being withdrawn due to a “change in circumstances” and that he will seek bail again before the trial court.

Sibal said, “Bail matter, we wish to withdraw. There has been a change in circumstances; we will try our luck in the trial court.”

Khalid has been detained as part of a UAPA investigation into the suspected plot behind the February 2020 riots in North-East Delhi.
Khalid had filed a petition with the Supreme Court contesting a Delhi High Court decision from October 2022 that refused him bail.

Khalid was apprehended as part of a UAPA investigation into the alleged plot behind the February 2020 riots in North-East Delhi.
Khalid had filed an appeal with the Supreme Court, challenging a Delhi High Court order from October 2022 that denied him bail.

Umar Khalid was charged with criminal conspiracy, rioting, and unlawful assembly, as well as several provisions of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act.
Besides Khalid, Sharjeel Imam, activist Khalid Saifi, JNU students Natasha Narwal and Devangana Kalita, Jamia Coordination Committee members Safoora Zargar, former AAP councillor Tahir Hussain and several others were booked under the stringent law in the case.

The violence that erupted during the protests against CAA and NRC left 53 people dead and over 700 injured.

</excerpt>

Jawaharlal Nehru University has rolled out an online application system for filing appraisal forms for its faculty members in a bid to ease out the process of promotions at the university, a varsity official said on Tuesday.

With this, JNU has become the first central university to adopt an online Annual Performance Appraisal Report (APAR) in the country for its faculty members, the varsity claimed.

“This system will benefit the teaching staff at the university by completely digitising the appraisal form submission system and helping with paperless record keeping and upkeep,” a senior JNU official said.
“We have rolled out e-APAR as part of our digital initiatives,” he added.

The Jawaharlal Nehru University Teachers’ Association (JNUTA) has opposed the move, saying that it will make promotions “unnecessarily complicated” by adding a layer of “bureaucracy” to the process.

“The faculty members already submit an annual report listing the academic work done by them throughout the year as per the 2018 UGC order. Introducing another system in the name of digitisation will only make it more complicated and add unnecessary bureaucracy,” said DK Lobiyal, president, JNUTA.

The assessment of the performance of teachers as “satisfactory” or “not satisfactory” will be based on the review of the head of the department, Lobiyal said, adding that it may leave room for partiality.

APAR is an online system using which faculty members can submit the self-assessment of their annual performance to the Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC) of the university.

Members of Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad, the student wing of the BJP, on Monday accused the Left affiliated students’ union for the desecration of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj’s portrait on his birth anniversary on Sunday.

Earlier, ABVP blamed the NSUI, the Congress-backed student wing, for creating disturbances at the office of the JNU students’ body. The ABVP has been demanding to name the JNUSU office after Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj.

The social media convenor of ABVP, Kumar Ashutosh, while talking to a prominent news agency on Monday, said, “A portrait of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj was installed at the JNUSU office. Meanwhile, the Left student wing not only removed the portrait but also threw the garland around it into the trash, which led to the brawl between the two factions on the university campus. It is reported that several students suffered minor injuries in the scuffle.

Members of the ABVP have demanded that the university administration and the Delhi Police take strict action against the accused and that the JNUSU office be named after Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj.

The NSUI has been singing a different song and denying any involvement in the destruction of the portrait of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj on the JNU campus. NSUI general secretary Ganpat Chaudhary claimed that ABVP members had kept the portrait in the office without permission, so other students removed it.

The tussle between the ABVP and left-affiliated student wings has been continuing. ABVP also accused outsiders of being involved in the incident as well.

Delhi Police on 25th January said it has begun an inquiry on the complaint lodged by students of Jawaharlal Nehru University against the alleged stone pelting and deli power cut that took place while they were watching the controversial BBC documentary on PM Narendra Modi.

The officials also said that, both the sides have given a complaint to Delhi Police on the late-night students’ ruckus on campus in the JNU case. On 24th January night, several students took out a protest march from their campus to the Vasant Kunj Police Station and lodged a complaint claiming stones were pelted at them while watching the screening of the documentary. The protest was called off after the police assured them that they will investigate the matter.

“We filed a complaint, and the police assured us they will be immediately looking into the incident. We gave the name and details of the people involved. As of now we are calling off the protest”, said the JNU Student Union President Aishe Ghosh.

In the School of International Studies (SIS), Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) walls were found defaced with slogans.

After this Vice-Chancellor of Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) Prof. Santishree D. Pandit has taken serious note of the defacement of walls and faculty rooms.

Earlier on Thursday the Vice-Chancellor, JNU, Prof. Santishree D. Pandit stated the incident of vandalism where the walls of the SIS, JNU.

Meanwhile, on the walls of the School of International Studies (SIS), JNU “anti-brahmin” slogans were written.

The notice from the Registrar JNU stated, “The administration condemns these exclusivist tendencies on campus. Such incidents will not be tolerated as JNU belongs to all.”

Moreover, at the earliest, an inquiry report has been asked from the Dean of the School of International Studies and Grievances Committee by the VC.

“JNU stands for inclusion and equality. The VC reiterates zero tolerance for any violence on campus,” Registrar notice reads.

However, further details are awaited.

Union Minister Anurag Thakur slammed Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and said with ‘tukde tukde gang’ the Congress leader is doing Bharat Jodo Yatra.

“Rahul Gandhi doing Bharat Jodo Yatra with ‘tukde tukde gang’. He spoke about Hindu terror, stood with people who tried to divide India in JNU, and now he’s raising questions on Veer Savarkar. It’s Congres’ mentality, they don’t see anything beyond one family,” Anurag Thakur said.

Earlier on Thursday Rahul Gandhi lashed Veer Savarkar for betraying leaders like Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru, and Sardar Patel by signing an apology letter to the British.

Meanwhile, Union Minister Thakur also talked about the Gujarat model and said, “Gujarat model is the number 1 model and development model. Congress did politics only on basis of divide and rule. They’ve asked for votes on basis of caste, community, and religion. BJP works on basis of good governance, development, and honesty.”

Talking about Prime Minister Narendra Modi Thakur said, “If Gujarat is riot-free today then it’s because of BJP and PM Modi. The more Gujarat progresses, the more India will progress. If Gujarat wins, then India will progress.”

Moreover, BJP leader Hardik Patel also lashed Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s ongoing “Bharat Jodo Yatra” and said, “Congress should first do Congress Jodo instead of the Bharat Jodo Yatra. The question is whether Rahul Gandhi will come after the elections or before the elections. The people of Gujarat do not want to entertain Congress.”

“I have been in the Congress and I know that the Congress has always insulted the Gujaratis and raised questions on the identity and pride of Gujarat. The people of Gujarat have never accepted Congress and will never do also. There is no comparison or fight between BJP with the Congress. Our motive is to take our model of development further.” Patel said.

However, in the assembly elections, Hardik Patel is fighting from Gujarat’s Viramgam.

JNU on Saturday issued a notice declaring the campus off-limits for four students studying a BA, MA, and Mphil-PhD for engaging in a physical altercation with a fellow campus student, two days after a fight broke out amongst students.

The notice issued by the chief proctor said that the students pursuing different courses were involved in a physical fight with another fellow student on November 9 at midnight at Narmada Hostel. Subsequently, as per the rules of discipline and proper conduct of students at JNU, the vice-chancellor declared the campus out of bounds for the students until an inquiry was completed. The students were also required to cooperate with the inquiry committee.

On Thursday, university registrar Ravikesh said that a scuffle between two groups of students broke out on campus today due to personal animosity. “JNU authority has taken a serious view of the matter and has instructed the Dean of Students and the Security branch to take necessary steps and submit a detailed report on this incident. The administration reiterates its resolve for zero tolerance towards any form of violence on campus and appeals to the student groups to desist from resorting to violence and taking the law into their hands failing which strict action will be taken as per university rule,” said the registrar.

Over the past four to five years, there have been numerous fights between various organisations on the JNU campus. An altercation between two groups of students—left-associated groups and Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP)—over the preparation of non-vegetarian food in the dinner menu of the Kaveri Hostel on Sunday evening when Ram Navmi was being celebrated—led to violence breaking out on the JNU campus earlier this year in April.

A group of students and instructors were planning a march on January 5, 2020 at the T-point next to the Sabarmati dormitory when a gang of people allegedly attacked them while mask-clad and equipped with hammers, clubs, and rods. The students were beaten up by the mob after they stormed into various dorms, including Periyar and Sabarmati. Aishe Ghosh, a member of the JNU Student Union, was also assaulted by a mob during the incident.
