NEW DELHI: The Mahagathbandhan, the state-level version of the I.N.D.I.A bloc in Bihar, has suffered yet another jolt, with the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) signalling its intent to contest the upcoming Bihar Assembly elections independently.

This follows a similar setback caused by the exit of the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) from the I.N.D.I.A bloc, further exposing fault lines within the opposition coalition. Political experts point out that while the AAP currently lacks a strong voter base in Bihar, its decision to enter the electoral battlefield alone could cause more harm to the Mahagathbandhan than to the NDA.

Analysts suggest that by contesting independently, AAP may end up splitting the anti-NDA vote, indirectly aiding the BJP-JDU alliance’s prospects. Notably, the Bihar Assembly elections, scheduled for October–November 2025, are poised to be a high-stakes and pivotal contest between the ruling NDA and the Mahagathbandhan.

As the BJP-JDU coalition appears to be consolidating its base and gaining momentum, the opposition alliance is increasingly struggling with internal discord and growing challenges posed by rising political players such as AAP, Jan Suraaj, and AIMIM. These dynamics are transforming the electoral scene into a far more competitive and consequential one for both Bihar and the national political narrative.

AAP’s foray into the race further complicates the already fractured opposition landscape in the state. Prashant Kishor’s Jan Suraaj Party has already announced its participation, which may undermine the traditional caste- and community-based vote banks of established parties.

Similarly, the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul-Muslimeen (AIMIM), led by Asaduddin Owaisi, has declared it will contest more seats than it did in 2020—when it secured five Assembly seats for the first time—raising the stakes even higher. AAP’s move to contest the Bihar elections solo has surprised many, given its past failures in the state and history of backing out after initial announcements.

Unlike in previous years, the party now seems firm on contesting, hoping to leverage its Delhi governance record and reconnect with the Purvanchali migrant voters who once backed Kejriwal but have since drifted away. According to political analyst Aditya Rathi, AAP’s entry has undoubtedly added a new dimension to the electoral atmosphere.

However, he cautioned that Bihar’s deeply rooted caste equations and regional loyalties pose significant obstacles for any new entrant. “AAP is clearly trying to win over migrant voters from Bihar who are familiar with its performance in Delhi. But the political landscape in Bihar is far more nuanced and complex,” Rathi noted. He warned that the increasing number of political participants could turn the 2025 elections into a multi-cornered contest, which may ultimately favour the BJP by diffusing the opposition vote. “New formations could still emerge ahead of the elections, but this fragmentation may weaken, rather than strengthen, the I.N.D.I.A bloc,” he concluded.

Earlier this week, AAP Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Singh publicly confirmed the party’s intent to contest all 243 Assembly seats in Bihar. “AAP is fully prepared to contest strongly in the upcoming elections. While seat-sharing discussions are not off the table, any such decision will rest with our central leadership following consultations with the Bihar unit,” Singh said—indicating that while the door to coordination remains slightly ajar, the party is largely committed to its solo strategy

</excerpt>

JMM, unhappy with Mahagathbandhan, plans to contest Bihar Assembly elections independently

NEW DELHI: The Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) has expressed dissatisfaction with the manner in which the Mahagathbandhan alliance is preparing for the upcoming Bihar Assembly elections. As a result, the party is now gearing up to field its own candidates independently, without being part of the Mahagathbandhan alliance. Notably, the Bihar Assembly polls are scheduled to take place later this year, during October and November.

A source within the party informed The Sunday Guardian that JMM, the ruling party in Jharkhand, is actively preparing to contest the Bihar elections on its own. The party’s leadership is reportedly frustrated after being overlooked in three key Mahagathbandhan meetings held in Bihar during April and May. Adding to the disappointment is JMM’s exclusion from the 21-member coordination committee of the alliance. The party feels sidelined in the decisionmaking process, further straining relations within the coalition.

Despite these setbacks, Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren remains hopeful that Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) leader Tejashwi Yadav, who leads the Mahagathbandhan, will allocate a fair share of seats to the JMM. Soren’s expectations are rooted in the spirit of reciprocity, as he had extended significant support to the RJD during the Jharkhand Assembly elections in 2024 by offering them several seats. However, so far, the JMM has not received any special attention or concrete assurances regarding its role in the upcoming Bihar elections. Consequently, there is growing speculation that the JMM may field candidates independently in 12 to 15 border constituencies in Bihar, bypassing the alliance altogether.

A senior JMM leader pointed out that, despite Jharkhand having a relatively small 81-member Assembly, the party had generously allotted six seats to the RJD in the 2024 elections. In addition, the JMM awarded a ministerial berth to an RJD leader after forming the government.

However, given the RJD’s current stance and lack of cooperation, the JMM now feels compelled to contest the Bihar elections on its own.

It’s worth noting that while JMM maintains a limited electoral footprint in Bihar, particularly in the bordering constituencies, its success has been minimal. Since its inception, the JMM has managed to secure only a single seat in the 2010 Bihar Assembly elections. That year, Sumit Kumar Singh won from the Chakai constituency on a JMM ticket. Singh is currently an independent MLA and serves as Bihar’s Minister of Science, Technology, and Technical Education.

Speaking to The Sunday Guardian, JMM General Secretary and spokesperson Vinod Kumar Pandey shared that the party recently passed a resolution during its convention to strengthen its organisational presence not only in Jharkhand but also across states such as Bihar, Assam, Tamil Nadu, West Bengal, Uttar Pradesh, Odisha, and Chhattisgarh. As part of this strategy, the party is planning to contest elections in the border areas of Bihar if the Mahagathbandhan alliance continues to ignore them. Although the JMM is still making efforts to coordinate with the Mahagathbandhan, it is also fully prepared to go solo if it does not receive due recognition and respect within the alliance.

Political observers told the publication that during its recent convention, the JMM officially endorsed a political resolution aimed at expanding its footprint and gaining recognition as a national party. In this context, the party is not inclined to withdraw from participating in the Bihar elections. So far, the JMM has been excluded from all key meetings of the Mahagathbandhan’s state-level coordination committee and has not been invited to attend strategy meetings for upcoming district-level programmes. Under such circumstances, the party is likely to adopt the path of ‘Ekla Chalo’— moving forward alone if necessary

Congress general secretary KC Venugopal and state in-charge Ghulam Ahmad Mir arrived in Jharkhand earlier today. They were welcomed with traditional music and drums at Ranchi airport. Venugopal echoed Gogoi’s optimism, speaking to the press, stating, “We are very confident that we will win and form our government again.”

Jharkhand Minister and Congress candidate from Jamshedpur-West, Banna Gupta, highlighted the INDIA bloc’s focus on maximizing performance in the upcoming elections.
BJP Raises Concerns Over Chief Minister’s Age Declaration

The BJP, meanwhile, has questioned Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren’s age, pointing out discrepancies in his affidavits. According to BJP leaders, Soren’s age increased by seven years between 2019 and 2023, sparking allegations of irregularities.

The Jharkhand Assembly elections will be held across 81 constituencies in two phases on November 13 and November 20, with vote counting set for November 23.

His remarks are intended to galvanize support from women voters, who have reportedly responded positively to the BJP’s campaign efforts.

The BJP appears to be gaining traction among voters in Jharkhand, signaling a potential shift in the traditional voting patterns that have favored the JMM and Congress in the past. The party’s messaging has resonated well with the electorate, indicating a possible change in allegiance as the elections approach.

Jharkhand’s 81-member Legislative Assembly is set to hold elections between November and December. All major political parties, including the JMM, Congress, and BJP, are gearing up for a competitive electoral battle for control of Ranchi. </excerpt>

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday sharply criticized the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) for allegedly supporting “Bangladeshis and Rohingyas” and claimed that every citizen in Jharkhand feels unsafe due to the growing presence of infiltrators. Addressing a public rally in Jamshedpur, PM Modi expressed concern over the shrinking Adivasi population in the Santhal Pargana region, attributing it to the influx of infiltrators.

“In Santhal Pargana, the Adivasi population is rapidly decreasing, and infiltrators are seizing control of panchayat positions with the backing of the JMM. The incidents of crimes against daughters are on the rise. Every Jharkhandi feels unsafe because of these infiltrators,” PM Modi said.

The Prime Minister accused the JMM of promoting “appeasement politics,” claiming that extremists and infiltrators are gaining influence within the party. He further linked this issue to the Congress party’s influence over the JMM.

“These infiltrators and extremists have taken over the JMM because of its politics of appeasement. The Congress party’s influence has tainted the JMM, and now they only care about forming vote banks based on religion. This is the time to unite and support the BJP to stop this threat,” Modi added.

PM Modi also raised concerns about the changing demography of regions like Santhal Pargana and Kolhan, stating that the infiltration of Bangladeshis and Rohingyas poses a serious challenge to the state’s demographic balance. He criticized the JMM government for allegedly ignoring the problem, despite the Jharkhand High Court recently ordering an independent investigation into the issue of infiltration.

“The JMM government refuses to acknowledge the infiltration problem in Jharkhand, despite a court-ordered investigation. This infiltration is the biggest problem the state faces, and it threatens the safety of every citizen, especially parents of young daughters,” Modi stated.

The Prime Minister further attacked the Congress and Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), calling them the “three enemies of Jharkhand” alongside the JMM. He accused these parties of working against the interests of Jharkhand’s backward, Adivasi, and Dalit communities.

“Congress, JMM, and RJD are enemies of Jharkhand. The RJD seeks revenge for the state’s creation, and the Congress has always held back the backward, Adivasi, and Dalit communities. The JMM, which rose to power on Adivasi votes, now stands with those who are seizing Adivasi lands,” PM Modi concluded.

</excerpt>

Union Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan strongly criticized the Congress-JMM alliance in Jharkhand on Sunday, accusing both parties of habitual dishonesty. He emphasized that the BJP would unveil the shortcomings of the Hemant Soren administration. It’s worth noting that Jharkhand is one of the states scheduled for elections later this year.

Shivraj said, “Congress and JMM have become machines of lying, they lie every day that they have achieved success even with fewer seats. The same has happened in Jharkhand. If we convert the Lok Sabha results into Assembly results, we have won 52 seats out of 81.”

Chouhan also raised doubts about the accomplishments of the alliance during their five-year tenure, questioning what they have achieved. He pointed out that JMM’s manifesto includes 144 promises and Congress’s manifesto has 133 promises. Chouhan challenged Hemant Soren to clarify how many of these promises have been fulfilled, accusing them of misleading different segments of society. He stated his intention to expose the Hemant Soren government by highlighting the unfulfilled promises of the JMM-Congress alliance to the public.

“The promises included promises for the youth, stating that within two years of forming the government, jobs would be provided to thousands of Jharkhand youths in various vacant government positions. Until jobs are provided, graduates would receive Rs 5000 and postgraduates Rs 7000 per month. Hemant Soren did not give employment to even a single youth,” he said.

He further accused the government of misleading women, alleging that they were promised a monthly allowance of Rs 2000.

“Additionally, promises were made to farmers, including the establishment of a farmers’ bank. Under the previous BJP government led by Raghubar Das, Rs 5000 was given under the Mukhyemantri Krishi Samriddhi Yojana, which was discontinued by the Hemant Soren government,” he added.

The Union Minister underscored that the BJP would bring Hemant Soren’s commitments to the forefront and ensure accountability from the government for their actions.

Reduced Assembly Strength

After the recent Lok Sabha elections, the number of MLAs in the Jharkhand assembly was reduced due to some becoming MPs, while others either resigned or were expelled. The current strength of the assembly is now 76, reducing the half-way mark to 38.

Soren’s Swearing-In and Past Challenges

Hemant Soren was sworn in as Jharkhand Chief Minister on July 4, 2024, succeeding Champai Soren, who stepped down months ahead of the assembly election.

“Today is July 4. On January 31, from the same place, I conveyed a message to you all on how the opposition conspired against me. They were successful. For five months, they tried to keep me inside the jail by different means. We took the legal path, and people supported us,” Soren said before taking the oath.

This event followed Hemant Soren’s release on bail regarding money laundering charges connected to an alleged land racket in the state capital. He was the second chief minister to be arrested by the federal agency just months before the Lok Sabha elections on January 31, 2024.

Transition of Leadership

Minutes before his arrest, Hemant Soren resigned as Chief Minister, passing the role to Champai Soren. Champai, a loyalist and close associate of Hemant’s father Shibu Soren, took charge on February 2, 2024.

JMM’s Performance

During Hemant Soren’s time in jail, JMM won three Lok Sabha seats, an increase from their previous tally of one seat in 2019. In the 2019 assembly elections, the JMM, in alliance with Congress and RJD, secured a majority with 47 seats in the 81-member house:

JMM:30 seats

Congress: 16 seats

RJD: 1 seat

Hemant Soren’s successful trust vote solidifies his position as the Chief Minister of Jharkhand, marking a significant moment in the state’s political landscape.

This development comes around the time, when senior leader Champai Soren gave his resignation as Chief Minister.

As per congress state president Rajesh Thakur, Hemant Soren Will take oath as Jharkhand CM today. Reports PTI.

According to ANI’s report, he’ll be sworn in as CM at 5 pm. Meanwhile, JMM general secretary Supriyo Bhattacharya revealed, that a swearing-in ceremony will be conducted on July 7.

Talking to ANI, he said, ‘The Governor has invited us to form the government and take the oath. We have decided that the CM along with this cabinet will take oath on July 7.’

But Champai Soren gave his resignation from the post. Thus, clearing the path for Hemant Soren to reassume the role.

Meanwhile, JMM (Jharkhand Mukti Morcha) executive president Hemant Soren was detained by ED (Enforcement Directorate) on the grounds of alleged land scam and money laundering.

Before his arrest, soren tendered his resignation as Chief Minister. After his detention, Soren family close aide Champai Soren became chief minister and stayed in his post for 5 months.

Later, on June 28, the Jharkhand High Court granted him bail on the forgery case, which fake proceeds were generated to acquire lands in Ranchi.

While granting bail, the single-bench judge said, ‘The overall conspectus of the case based on broad possibilities does not specifically or indirectly assign the petitioner to be involved in the acquisition and possession as well as concealment of 8.86 acres of land at Shantinagar, Bargain, Ranchi connected to the “proceeds of crime.’

</excerpt>

With barely days left for the final phase of the polling, Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently addressed a rally in Dumka in favor of BJP’s candidate Sita Soren on Tuesday.

During the rally, Prime Minister Narendra Modi alleged, that the INDIA bloc has given shelter to infiltrators in the naxal-affected area of the state.

Launching a blistering attack on Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM), PM Modi said,

“Now, the problem of infiltrators has arisen as a big problem in Jharkhand. As a result, the number of tribals is rapidly decreasing in many areas and the number of infiltrators is increasing. The safety and lives of tribal daughters have come in danger. Who are these infiltrators who are a threat to our daughters? Why is the JMM shielding them?” questioned PM Modi at a rally.

Later, he accused that INDI alliance of political appeasement. Under which, they allegedly give protection to infiltrators and terrorists. According to him, whoever questions it, they (INDI Alliance) accuse them of inciting Hindu Muslim division.

PM Modi also accused congress of its alleged indulgence in “vote bank politics”, rather than working for dalit & adivasi’s benefits.

To emphasise BJP’s commitment for Dalits & Adivasis, Modi also referenced president of India, Draupadi Murmu, who comes from an Adivasi community.

Talking about her, modi accused them, for not supporting her and wanting her to loose.

Then directing an attack on both JMM and Congress, PM Modi accused them of removing him from the centre, so they can allegedly loot the state again.

“JMM, Congress, RJD, these people say that they want to remove Modi so that they can again perform scam. Will you allow the INDI bloc to loot the poor? JMM and Congress have totally looted the state. There are so many beautiful mountains here, but the state is being discussed for the mountains of notes. Where do you think the money is coming from? It is coming from the liquor scam, crores of tender scams. stated PM Modi.

PM Modi On Reservation

Moreover, while discussing reservations, he accused Congress for wanting to grant reservation to Muslims on the basis of religion, emphasizing that this move will unjustly takes away opportunities from Scheduled Castes (SC), Scheduled Tribes (ST), and Other Backward Classes (OBC).

“Modi will not allow the reservation of SC, ST, OBC to be looted. When I expose them, the INDI community gets irritated and says that Modi is creating Hindu-Muslim divide. They think that if they tarnish Modi’s image, Modi will get scared! They are still not able to understand that Modi will ensure that their hateful propaganda fails. No matter what they do, Modi will not let the Dalit, tribal and backward reservations be looted! This is Modi’s guarantee.”

Meanwhile, Dumka will witness a stiff competition between Shibu Soren’s daughter-in-law and BJP candidate Sita Soren and JMM candidate & six-time sitting MLA Nalin Soren this Lok sabha election 2024.

Former JMM MLA Sufal Marandi joined BJP on Sunday with supporters at the BJP state office. Leaders who took BJP membership are senior JMM workers Junas Murmu, Mahesh Murmu, and former chief Kamal Hansda. “The trust of the workers is now ending with JMM. JMM workers have now started to understand that the party which they irrigated with blood and sweat has no concern for the development of the poor, tribal, Dalit, and backward people of Jharkhand,” Prakash said. Meanwhile, the BJP leader also said that the public sees that only the Bharatiya Janata Party is concerned about the development of the state.

In the midst of rumours that Hemant Soren, the chief minister of Jharkhand, could lose his seat in the state parliament for allegedly breaking election rules by giving himself a mining lease, buses carrying Jharkhand MLAs were seen leaving his Ranchi mansion on Saturday afternoon.

Today, two Volvo buses were observed leaving the Jharkhand chief minister’s residence with MLAs from the JMM-led ruling alliance.

This evening, Jharkhand Congress Legislative Party Incharge Avinash Pande will preside over a gathering. The ruling alliance consists of 30 JMM MLAs, 18 Congress MLAs, and one Rashtriya Janata Dal MLA in the 81-member Jharkhand Assembly (RJD).

The third gathering of the state’s ruling UPA coalition members in two days had been summoned by Soren. Several MLAs were observed arriving for the meeting with their luggage earlier in the day.

There are rumours that the MLAs will be transferred to Chhattisgarh, which is governed by the Congress. Rajesh Thakur, head of the Congress in Jharkhand, stated that all of the MLAs had been instructed to arrive prepared for the meeting at Soren’s home.

“I have no information about this. MLAs are coming with luggage for the meeting because they have been asked to be ready. We will let you know if MLAs are asked to shift somewhere,” Thakur said.

BJP leader Nishikant Dubey poked fun at the Soren-led gathering by saying, “Even after scrambling, just 33 MLAs could convene in Ranchi.”

Soren tweeted this morning that the current brawl had no effect on him because he was a native of the tribal group.

“This is a tribal son. Never have our ways ever been stopped by their tactics, nor have we ever been afraid. Our ancestors have long removed the feeling of fear from us. There’s no place for fear in the DNA of us Adivasis,” tweeted Jharkhand CM.
