</excerpt>

A soldier was martyred in an ongoing anti-militancy operation in the Zaloora Gujjarpati area of Sopore in Jammu and Kashmir, official sources said on Monday.

The operation was launched by joint security forces on Sunday evening, following intelligence inputs about militant activity in the area. During the operation, a hideout was uncovered, and an exchange of fire ensued after militants opened fire during a cordon and search operation (CASO).

According to sources, a soldier from the advance team sustained critical injuries during the gunfight. Despite being rushed to a medical facility, the soldier succumbed to his injuries. The Army’s Srinagar-based Chinar Corps confirmed that one soldier was critically injured, stating, “The operation is in progress.”

The Army initially reported the operation was based on intelligence regarding suspicious activities in the area. Following the exchange of fire late Sunday, security forces maintained a tight cordon overnight, resuming search operations early Monday morning.

“There has been no fresh contact with the militants, but the search operation continues,” said an official source.

The operation comes at a time of heightened security across Kashmir in preparation for Republic Day celebrations.

During a recent security review, Kashmir’s Inspector General of Police, V. K. Birdi, directed officers to remain on high alert to ensure a secure environment for the upcoming event.

Efforts to neutralize the militants are ongoing, with joint forces leaving no stone unturned in the pursuit of maintaining peace and stability in the region.

</excerpt>

In response to concerns over the detection of human metapneumovirus (HMPV) cases in the country, the Jammu and Kashmir health department has established a specialised ICU ward in Jammu to address any potential outbreak.

“We have prepared a special ICU ward to handle any eventuality. God forbid if a pandemic occurs, we are ready,” said Dr. Hamid Zargar, Medical Superintendent of Gandhinagar Government Hospital. The newly set up, centrally-heated ward is equipped with eight ventilator-supported beds and a 24×7 oxygen supply, ensuring readiness for emergency situations. Doctors have reassured the public, emphasizing that HMPV is not a new pathogen and is currently not causing widespread concern.

“It is a mild upper respiratory disease. Six cases have been detected so far (in the country), but there is no need to panic,” Dr. Zargar said. To further strengthen preparedness, the administration has conducted review meetings and confirmed the availability of robust medical facilities, including a fully functional oxygen plant with a capacity of 22,000 LPM. “In addition to the special ward, our hospital has 100 oxygen-supported beds, along with sufficient concentrators and various types of cylinders,” Zargar added.

Human metapneumovirus, first identified in 2001 but circulating since the 1970s, typically causes mild cold-like symptoms. Health experts have cautioned that children and older adults may be more susceptible to severe impacts, urging vigilance for warning signs. While a few cases of HMPV have been reported from Karnataka, Maharashtra, and Gujarat, health authorities maintain that the situation is under control. Experts continue to advise the public to remain calm and stay informed about preventive measures.

Similar Incident Last Week

This mishap follows another fatal incident just days earlier, where five soldiers lost their lives, and five others, including the driver, sustained serious injuries. Officials confirmed that the Poonch incident was not related to any terrorist activity.

Adverse Weather Conditions

The MeT department warned of potential disruptions in road and air transport, urging residents to exercise caution and avoid non-essential travel during adverse weather conditions.

Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely and have advised the public to remain vigilant to ensure safety amidst challenging weather conditions.

</excerpt>

Since the creation of the universe, India has been a spiritual land, a ‘Karmabhumi’ (land of action). Jammu & Kashmir, situated on India’s sacred land, is considered the land of the gods because it is the holy abode of the divine creators of this beautiful world—the supreme parents, the omnipresent Supreme Brahman. This divine land is home to the holy shrines of the epoch-changing goddesses, Mata Vaishno Devi and Mata Sita. Both these goddesses are associated with Lord Vishnu, and therefore, the final incarnation of Vishnu, Lord Kalki, is also connected to Jammu & Kashmir.
Kalki disciple Kailash Mohan (from Banswara) states that the transformation from the current age of Kali Yuga to Satya Yuga, and the creation of a Satya Yuga world on this ‘Karmabhumi,’ will begin from Jammu & Kashmir. The connection of Kalki’s incarnation to this sacred land is evident in religious texts, which describe Jammu & Kashmir as the sacred abode of the Saguna Brahman, the creator and sustainer of all living beings. The Supreme Brahman is known to humanity by various names, including Baba Amarnath, Shiva-Shakti, Adam and Eve, and Adam and Havva.
The holy shrines of Mata Sita and Mata Vaishno Devi also reside in this sacred land of Jammu & Kashmir. Mata Sita and Mata Vaishno Devi are manifestations of Shakti (divine feminine power), while Brahma, Mahesh, and Vishnu represent the forms of Shiva. The supreme parents, the Supreme Brahman, or Ardhanarishvara, exist here in Jammu & Kashmir alongside these divine powers. Vaishno Devi, the manifestation of the three goddesses, is known as Trikuta and Shakti Roopa Rama.
The complete transformation of this epoch will occur through the Kalki Gyan Sagar from Jammu & Kashmir. In the future, Jammu & Kashmir will be renowned as the sacred global pilgrimage center of Satya Yuga’s World Ahimsa Paramodharma (supreme non-violence) for all of humanity. In addition to spiritual knowledge, Jammu & Kashmir, a tourist destination, will offer peace and tranquility to humanity. In this transitional period, known as the ‘Sangamyuga’ (confluence age), where Kali Yuga is turning into Satya Yuga, people must change their religious mindset according to the times. They should abandon casteism, sectarianism, and outdated traditions, embrace virtuous actions and service as human religion, and participate in divine works. The true worship of God lies in the virtuous deeds of humanity.
Kalki disciple Kailash Mohan, who travels across the country to promote religion, asserts that the event of Mata Sita merging with the earth in the Treta Yuga is connected to the Ram avatar of Lord Vishnu. Therefore, the future Kalki incarnation of Vishnu in this ‘Karmabhumi’ is also linked to Lakshmi, who is none other than Mata Sita. In the 21st century, the Kalki Gyan Sagar from Jammu & Kashmir will awaken divinity and godliness in the hearts of humanity, freeing them from the concepts of God and avatars. Humanity, in its vast soul form, is the Nirguna Brahman (formless ultimate reality), and in its living soul form, is the Saguna Brahman (manifested ultimate reality). Kalki Gyan Sagar will impart the knowledge of action, enabling humans to attain heavenly pleasures through virtuous deeds and free karma yogis from the cycle of birth and death. Heaven, hell, and salvation all exist in this ‘Karmabhumi.’
To attain self-liberation, humans must renounce their individual soul form and become detached karma yogis in their vast soul form. Thus, to liberate mankind from this illusory world and the influence of Maya (illusion), divine knowledge is imparted through the heart of a selfless karma yogi, and through them, God re-establishes and promotes religion on this ‘Karmabhumi.’ According to Kalki disciple Kailash Mohan, on April 23, 2018, the flag of Kalki Gyan Sagar’s Satya Yuga World Ahimsa Paramodharma was raised at the holy site of Mata Van Khadi Dham in Jammu & Kashmir, in the presence of prominent citizens of all faiths, to restore peace to the world. Subsequently, on March 9, 2023, the foundation stone of the Kalki Gyan Sagar Gurukul was laid in the presence of Mahant Bhagwandas, with all-religion devotees participating.
The 21st century is the time of epoch transformation, also known as the ‘Sangamyuga.’ The same divine power that is formless, attribute-less, and in its soul form, manifests in its living soul form. This formless power is symbolized by the Shivlinga. The formless soul of God and the living soul of avatars both exist within the human body and cannot be seen through material eyes.
Kalki disciple Kailash Mohan says that God manifests through the heart of a selfless karma yogi and accomplishes his divine works in mysterious ways on this ‘Karmabhumi.’ Through Kalki Gyan Sagar, the Kalki avatar will spread the mysterious knowledge of creation to humanity, awakening divinity and godliness within their hearts. Today’s era is an era of development, and to create a Satya Yuga world on this ‘Karmabhumi,’ the promotion of human religion is essential. Humanity must become detached karma yogis in their vast soul form, free from material attachments.

</excerpt>

Sheikh Abdul Rashid, popularly known as Engineer Rashid, President of the Awami Ittehad Party and Independent MP from Baramulla, surrendered at Tihar Jail on Monday after the expiration of his interim bail in an NIA terror-funding case. Before entering jail, Rashid made a passionate statement about his dedication to the welfare of the people of Jammu and Kashmir, declaring he was “ready to sacrifice” his life if needed.

“We are ready to sacrifice our lives for the public,” he told ANI, adding, “Whether we are in jail or at home, we will always talk about the welfare of the people and the peace of Kashmir with honor and dignity.” Rashid, who has spent five and a half years in jail previously, said he remains undeterred by his return to prison, confident that “justice will prevail.”

Advocating Peace and Dialogue, Condemning Violence

Rashid condemned recent violent incidents in Jammu and Kashmir, reiterating that the people of the Union Territory are against violence. He urged for reconciliation, calling on all stakeholders to engage in dialogue to bring lasting peace to the region. “Peace cannot be achieved without justice,” he emphasized, urging for a comprehensive approach to conflict resolution.

In his statements, Rashid also criticized regional leaders, notably Farooq Abdullah and Omar Abdullah, accusing them of shifting stances on Kashmir’s issues based on political convenience. He argued that the Abdullah-led party has maintained a “double standard” since 1947, using Article 370 for electoral gain but neglecting it post-elections. “The people will teach them a lesson,” Rashid warned, asserting that voters will hold leaders accountable for inconsistencies in their approach to Kashmir’s autonomy and development.

Rashid concluded by reaffirming his commitment to the rights and development of Kashmiris and encouraged people to stay resilient.

</excerpt>

Analysts believe that a reduced majority or outright loss for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the upcoming Haryana and Jammu & Kashmir (J&K) elections is unlikely to significantly impact the stock markets.

Currently, market concerns are broader, with major focus on the evolving geopolitical situation in West Asia and its potential effects on oil prices, the outcome of the upcoming U.S. presidential elections in November, and the forthcoming corporate earnings season in India. Additionally, the monetary policies of global central banks are also expected to be closely monitored.

However, a complete rout for the BJP in all state elections—starting with Haryana and J&K, followed by Maharashtra (with elections anticipated in November) and Delhi (likely in February)—could lead to a temporary knee-jerk reaction in the markets, analysts warn.

According to G. Chokkalingam, founder and head of research at Equinomics Research, the markets are already factoring in potential outcomes from the state elections based on past Lok Sabha results. He noted that, aside from Maharashtra, the other states hold fewer Lok Sabha seats, meaning their electoral outcomes would have a minimal effect on market movements. He emphasized that fluctuations in crude oil prices, driven by the ongoing geopolitical tensions in West Asia, are likely to be more influential on domestic market trends at this time.

According to the latest electoral rolls, 25,78,099 voters are eligible to cast their ballot, including 13,12,730 men, 12,65,316 women, and 53 third-gender voters. Among these, 1,20,612 voters aged 18-19 will be participating for the first time, representing a significant contribution of young voters in the democratic process. This phase will also witness the participation of 19,201 Persons with Disabilities (PwD) voters and 20,880 voters above the age of 85.

District-wise, Srinagar leads with 93 candidates contesting across eight constituencies, while Budgam has 46 candidates in five constituencies. Rajouri has 34 candidates vying for positions, followed by 25 in Poonch, 21 in Ganderbal, and 20 in Reasi.
Srinagar district has the highest number of registered voters with 7,76,674, including 3,87,722 males, 3,88,922 females, and 30 transgender individuals, spread across 932 polling stations. Rajouri follows with 4,92,008 registered voters, including 745 polling stations, and Budgam with 5,11,864 voters across 639 stations.
Poonch district, with three constituencies, has 3,52,330 voters facilitated by 483 polling stations, while Reasi has 2,37,205 voters and 436 polling stations. Ganderbal district, with 2,08,018 registered voters, will vote at 267 polling stations.

To ensure smooth and transparent elections, the Election Commission of India (ECI) has set up 3,502 polling stations across the 26 constituencies, with 100% webcasting. These include 1,056 urban and 2,446 rural polling stations. Special provisions have also been made to enhance voter participation, including 157 special polling stations—26 managed by women as Pink Polling Stations, 26 manned by specially-abled persons, and 26 handled by youth. Additionally, there are 31 border polling stations and 26 green polling stations for eco-friendly voting.
Voting will take place from 7:00 AM to 6:00 PM on September 25, as the people of Jammu and Kashmir participate in shaping the region’s political future.

</excerpt>

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh commended the people of Jammu and Kashmir on Sunday for their enthusiastic participation in the first phase of the Assembly elections, held on September 18, with a voter turnout of over 61%, the highest in 30 years. He remarked that the strong democratic engagement in the region has caused discomfort in Pakistan, especially after the abrogation of Article 370.
Addressing a rally in support of BJP candidate Choudhary Abdul Gani, Singh took aim at opposition parties, accusing the National Conference (NC), Congress, and the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) of misleading the public with promises to restore Article 370, which was repealed by the central government in 2019. “The NC, Congress, and PDP are acting as proxies for Pakistan by discussing the restoration of Article 370 in their manifestoes,” Singh said.
The defence minister pointed to Pakistan’s internal turmoil, suggesting that its leaders are focusing on Jammu and Kashmir to divert attention from their problems. He referenced a statement from Pakistan’s Defence Minister, Khawaja Asif, where Asif expressed alignment with the NC-Congress alliance on Article 370, questioning Pakistan’s interference in India’s internal matters.
Singh also highlighted the sentiments in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK), where he claimed residents are eager to join India, impressed by the region’s progress under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership.
Drawing on former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s words—”hum dost badal sakte hain, humsaaye nahi” (we can change friends but not neighbours)—Singh expressed India’s willingness for peaceful relations with Pakistan, provided it “treads the right path.” However, he reaffirmed that the restoration of Article 370 would not happen under the BJP’s rule.
He also touched on the challenges Jammu and Kashmir faced over the years due to Article 370, stating that 80% of those killed in the region’s violence were Muslims. He vowed that if BJP comes to power, it would transform Jammu and Kashmir into the most developed region in India within a decade.
Singh concluded by praising the cultural unity of Kashmir and lamenting that local politicians have divided the region for political gain.
He promised that under Modi’s leadership, Jammu and Kashmir would see an end to divisive politics, focusing instead on progress and national unity.

</excerpt>

Jammu and Kashmir saw enthusiastic participation by voters in the first phase of the Assembly elections on Wednesday. The voting percentage, at the time of writing, was over 58% and may cross 60% once all the numbers come in. This is quite remarkable given the low participation by voters in earlier elections. The Lok Sabha elections served as a curtain raiser, where too we saw enthusiasm among voters for casting their votes. This would have disappointed the Pakistan-backed propagandists who have been telling everyone that the situation in Kashmir is among the most oppressive in the world and that India has killed democracy by abrogating Article 370. Instead what the world saw on Wednesday were long queues at polling booths, with voters freely exercising their franchise. The run-up to the first phase also resembled the way electoral politics is played in this country, with the rallies and the rhetoric dominating the voting landscape. The second and third phases of voting are scheduled for 25 September and 1 October and there is no reason to believe that there will be any drop in voter enthusiasm in these phases.

This election is a part of the mainstreaming of Kashmir and is one more proof of how the valley has changed in the last 5 years, after the abrogation of Article 370. The Indian flag now flutters where it was never allowed to fly—at Srinagar’s Lal Chowk. The city itself has got a major facelift. Srinagar, which had got traffic lights a little over 10 years ago and went indoors at 6 pm for fear of terror attacks in 2014—when the Assembly elections were held there after the devastating floods that year—now bustles in the evening, with tourists and locals thronging the city centre. Even in 2019, before the abrogation of Article 370, the talk in the international media was all about the allegations of young boys being picked up by the Indian Army, about torture, killing, rape, etc. A cottage industry had flourished of “victim shopping”, where the youth would take foreign reporters to specific locations and spin tales of horror, feeding the media with what was essentially fake information regarding the military. Terrorists ran amok. Stone-pelters in downtown Srinagar made the lives of security personnel hell. All of that seems like a bad dream now.

One of the reasons could be the security establishment’s ability to cut off the money chain that fed the overground workers of terror groups and other Pakistani proxies in the valley. The disappearance of Hurriyat from the scene, specifically the non-emergence of a Hurriyat leadership post the demise of Syed Ali Shah Geelani, too has helped the situation. After all, once upon a time, the valley marked its days according to the hartal (strike) calendar issued by the hardliner Geelani. For days and months there would be shutdowns because Geelani wanted it; elections would see minuscule participation because Geelani and other Hurriyat leaders would inevitably call for a shutdown on voting day, the reason why results were decided by a few hundred votes. Of course the stellar work done by the security establishment and the Lieutenant Governor’s administration has helped in the mainstreaming of Kashmir. The Army has worked hard to ensure that anyone who picks up the gun, has a shelf life of not more than a year. This crackdown has made the Pakistani backed terrorists to start attacking Jammu, but with the security establishment determined to neutralise them, there is every reason to believe that this too will be a thing of the past sooner than later. All this has contributed to the normalisation of the situation to a certain extent. Of course as long as Pakistan continues to make mischief, the threat of the situation deteriorating will always be there. It is to prevent this from happening and to keep the situation “normal” that the forces are paying a high price, in terms of manpower.
Amid all this, what is the most remarkable is the return of aspiration in the valley. People have started believing in the future.

Hence, it is encouraging that even those considered separatists, like the Jamaat and Engineer Rashid’s Awami Ittehad Party (AIP) are taking the democratic path to make their voices heard. Chances are that they will pick up a substantial number of seats too, especially AIP in the Baramulla region. Baramulla is Rashid’s Lok Sabha seat, which he won after defeating Omar Abdullah. He had a lead on 14 of Baramulla’s 18 Assembly segments in the Lok Sabha elections. In case he is able to retain that winning streak, Omar Abdullah’s National Conference would be the biggest loser, since these seats were once NC’s bastion. In fact the established political parties of J&K, the Abdullah family’s NC and the Mufti family’s People’s Democratic Party (PDP) have themselves to blame for the erosion in their support base. The consensus in the Valley seems to be that these two parties have done nothing for the people and hence it is time to consign them to the dustbins of history. If that actually happens, then there will be a sea change in the political complexion of the valley. Smaller parties are coming up and seem to be more representative of the local people. Whether or not they are able to fulfil the promises that they have made to their voters, only time will tell, but they should not forget that the elections are about issues that affect people’s lives. People are not voting for them because they have promised to bring back Article 370—which is an impossibility. People want a normal life, a peaceful and prosperous life. That aspiration must be fulfilled.

</excerpt>

Union Minister for Coal and Mines and BJP’s Jammu and Kashmir in-charge, G Kishan Reddy criticised Congress leader Rahul Gandhi accusing him of having no knowledge of the power situation in Jammu & Kashmir while labelling him as a “political tourist” who misleads the public with baseless accusations during elections.

The remarks came in response to Gandhi’s claim that Jammu & Kashmir supplies electricity to the rest of India while its residents pay higher electricity bills.
Terming Gandhi’s statement as false, Reddy claimed that it also ignored the efforts made by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in addressing the region’s energy challenges.

“Jammu & Kashmir has an immense hydropower potential of 18,000 megawatts, this capacity was grossly underutilized under previous Congress-led governments. Over the past 70 years, only 3,400 megawatts have been tapped, with the state itself contributing a mere 1,197 megawatts since independence. In contrast, the Modi administration has set a goal to add 3,014 megawatts of hydropower capacity by 2025-26. This will be achieved through four major hydroelectric projects currently under construction—Pakal Dul (1,000 MW, costing Rs8,112 crore), Ratle (850 MW, Rs5,282 crore), Kiru (624 MW, Rs4,287 crore), and Kwar (540 MW, Rs4,526 crore). These projects are expected to be completed between March and November 2026, collectively generating an estimated 10,614 million units of electricity annually,” he told the Daily Guardian.

The union territory will witness a three phase assembly election, which is happening after ten years, that starts next week.

Reddy claimed that there has been a drastic reduction in Jammu & Kashmir’s power deficit under the Modi government. The deficit, which stood at 17.8% in 2018-19, has fallen to 7.5% in the fiscal year 2023-24. According to him, the Jammu & Kashmir government spent approximately ₹9,500 crore on power purchases during the 2023-24 fiscal year, through the Jammu & Kashmir Power Corporation Limited (JKPCL). This significant expenditure has helped meet the energy demands of the region’s consumers, commercial entities, and industries.

Pointing towards the infrastructure improvements made to the state’s power transmission system, Reddy said that between 2019 and 2024, the government has increased transmission capacity by 4,520 MVA through the construction and enhancement of 38 grid substations. A further investment of Rs 4,950 crore is planned for the next three years to continue upgrading the transmission network, ensuring a more stable and efficient supply of electricity.

The campaign will also feature prominent Congress leaders, including Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, marking her first campaign appearance in the region.

The Congress’s strategy includes rallies and roadshows, with the first events planned in Banihal and Dooru in South Kashmir. This campaign is seen as a crucial push for the party ahead of the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly elections, which will be held in three phases starting September 18.

Jammu and Kashmir Congress chief Tariq Hameed Karra emphasized the significance of Rahul Gandhi’s involvement, highlighting his successful Bharat Jodo Yatra and its impact on the campaign. The Congress is optimistic about leveraging Gandhi’s popularity to counter the BJP’s dominance, especially in Jammu, where the party has seen recent successes.

The Congress is contesting in alliance with the National Conference, with a seat-sharing arrangement of 51 seats for the National Conference and 32 for Congress. Priyanka Gandhi Vadra’s participation is expected to add momentum to the campaign.

Meanwhile, the BJP is also intensifying its efforts, with rallies planned featuring Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah, and other senior leaders.

Jammu and Kashmir, which has 90 Assembly seats, will conduct its elections in three phases: September 18, September 25, and October 1, with results set to be announced on October 8.

</excerpt>

The Election Commission announced on Saturday that the polling date for Haryana has been shifted from October 1 to October 5, and the counting of votes for both the J&K and Haryana assembly elections has been rescheduled from October 4 to October 8.

The adjustment was made to respect the voting rights and traditions of the Bishnoi community, who observe a long-standing custom of participating in the Asoj Amavasya festival in honor of their Guru Jambheshwar, the EC explained.

“Representations were received from National Political Parties, State Political Party and All India Bishnoi Mahasabha regarding mass movement of people of Bishnoi community of Haryana to Rajasthan to participate in centuries old Asoj Amavasya festival celebration,” stated the poll panel.

The Commission further noted that this movement could potentially “deny voting rights to a large number of people and may lead to reduced voter participation in the general election to the legislative assembly of Haryana.” In response to these concerns, the Commission decided to change the polling date in Haryana to October 5.

The voting schedule for Jammu and Kashmir remains unchanged, with elections set to take place in three phases on September 18, September 25, and October 1.

This story is still developing.

But if there is one lesson from the 2024 election results, it is that no one party can claim to be omnipresent. </excerpt>

Both the Congress and the BJP have been accused of playing the big brother when it comes to regional allies. But if there is one lesson from the 2024 election results, it is that no one party can claim to be omnipresent. The two may have a national footprint throughout the country (as opposed to regional parties that are limited to their states of influence). But it is equally true that the national footprint would not be possible without the crutch of regional allies. For instance, would the Congress have done as well in Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Jharkhand and J&K without its local allies? Similarly, the BJP would not be able to form government at the Centre and cross the 272 mark without Chandrababu Naidu and Nitish Kumar (Chirag Paswan is additional baggage that the Prime Minister is humoring for now, but I would not be surprised if Paswan is the first casualty once the BJP starts grooming its own local leadership in Bihar.

This is something young Chirag should do well to keep in mind, for the Prime Minister may indulge him with a pat on the back now and then, but Narendra Modi and Amit Shah can be very ruthless in discarding those that stand in the way of their own party’s interests. And the local BJP unit does not get along well with someone whose ambitions don’t match his stature. But, I digress.)

Back to the politics of coalition dharma. There are four assembly elections coming up as well as the crucial set of ten by-polls in Uttar Pradesh. The Congress and the National Conference have been the first off the bat and announced the seat sharing for Jammu & Kashmir, with the National Conference getting the larger chunk of 51 and the Congress getting 32.

The Congress, having realized that its regional ally has the advantage in the Union Territory of J&K has wisely allowed the NC to have the larger share. But will it practice the same principle in Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh? In Maharashtra, the Udhav Thackeray’s Sena is hopeful of projecting their leader as the CM face of the alliance. After all, he is a former CM. However this will not go down well with the local congress leaders in the state who also fancy a chance at wresting the state away from the BJP and its allies, the Mahayuti alliance. The Maharashtra unit of the Congress party claims that while theirs is a pan Maharashtra party, the Sena is limited to certain pockets. How will the Congress leadership at the Centre handle this? Will Mallikarjun Kharge and Rahul Gandhi keep the peace for the larger goal of defeating the BJP and give in to the Sena’s demands? Or will they concede to their own party workers? The third ally in this combination, Sharad Pawar, seems content to play kingmaker for that is where his clout comes from.

A similar dilemma awaits the Congress in Uttar Pradesh for the Samajwadi Party is in no mood to concede the lion’s share to the Congress. It wants to fight atleast six if not more of the ten bypolls while the Congress will push for an equal share. Unlike Maharashtra however, in Uttar Pradesh the Congress is yet to groom a leader of stature, let alone anyone who can match Akhilesh Yadav’s pan-state appeal.

The BJP too is in a similar dilemma. Already its allies in Andhra Pradesh and Bihar have flexed their muscle on critical issues like the Wafk Board amendments. Will it take a lesson in appeasement when it comes to negotiating seats with the Mahayuti alliance partners.

Will it go with Eknath Shinde as the CM face again or promote a BJP leader as is the demand from its cadres? The NCP faction of Ajit Pawar too will not be dismissed easily when it comes to seat sharing despite its abysmal performance during the Lok Sabha elections. Then again, Ajit Pawar’s clout really is at the assembly level. Similarly Eknath Shinde’s nuisance value could be more than his on ground performance but the BJP will have to pander to his demands. As For Haryana, the BJP seems more keen on breaking individual leaders (mostly from the Congress) than forging any alliances, while the Congress is quite confident of going it alone, minus the Aam Admi Party this time.
In the end what matters most is that we see a vibrant democracy at play and that is the one big takeaway from the 2024 verdict.

</excerpt>

On Tuesday, several former members of the banned organisation, Jamaat-e-Islami, Jammu
and Kashmir filed their nomination papers to contest the upcoming Assembly elections in the union territory as independent candidates. Among them, Sugra Barkati, daughter of jailed separatist leader Sarjan Barkati, also filed papers on behalf of her father.

Jamaat-e-Islami, which has been banned by the union home ministry, has been unable to
participate in elections. Despite expressing interest in participating in the Lok Sabha
elections if the ban were lifted, the party has not contested any elections since 1987. It was previously part of the separatist amalgam Hurriyat Conference, which advocated for boycotts of elections from 1993 to 2003.

Talat Majeed, former chief of Jamaat, filed his nomination from the Pulwama constituency as an independent candidate. Majeed explained his decision, saying, “After reflecting on the
changing geopolitical landscape since 2008, I believe it is time to move beyond past
rigidities. We must engage with the political process to address current challenges.”

Majeed also emphasised the role of organisations like Jamaat and Hurriyat in today’s
political environment, noting, “We cannot ignore global dynamics when discussing Kashmir.
As Kashmiris, we must focus on the present and work towards a better future.”

Another former Jamaat leader, Sayar Ahmad Reshi, is contesting from the Kulgam
Assembly seat. Reshi urged voters to act according to their conscience, stating, “It is up to
Allah to bless or disgrace a person, but I appeal to people to vote according to their own
judgment. We aim to launch a historic movement for reforms.”

Reshi highlighted pressing issues such as unemployment and inadequate pensions,
emphasising, “While we have introduced sports to keep youth away from violence, jobs are
needed. We will work towards social justice and address the challenges faced by the elderly
and unemployed.”

Sarjan Barkati, known for his prominence during the unrest following the killing of Hizbul
Mujahideen commander Burhan Wani in 2016, will also be contesting from Shopian district.
His daughter, Sugra Barkati, filed the nomination papers on his behalf due to his current
imprisonment on terror charges.

The Assembly polls in Jammu and Kashmir will be held for the first time since the abrogation of Article 370 in 2019. The elections, the first in a decade, will take place in three phases: September 18, September 25, and October 1, with the vote counting scheduled for October 4.

He advised the party to concentrate on organising its own affairs.

“The BJP should focus on setting its house in order. For the first time, I saw that the BJP deleted its list within 10 minutes of releasing it. Today, chairs were broken in their offices,” Abdullah said.

BJP previously released a second list of candidates for the upcoming Jammu and Kashmir elections, naming Choudhary Roshan Hussain Gujjar for the Konkernag seat.

Initially, the party announced a list of 44 candidates for all three phases of the Assembly polls but later withdrew it. The revised list, issued a few hours later, included only 15 candidates for the first phase. </excerpt>

In a significant political move, Prime Minister Narendra Modi today chaired a meeting of the BJP Central Election Committee at his residence, with the focus squarely on the upcoming Jammu & Kashmir Assembly elections. The high-stakes meeting was attended by key figures within the party, including Home Minister Amit Shah, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, BJP National President J.P. Nadda, BJP State President Ravinder Raina, JK Election In charge Ram Madhav, Union Minister G. Kishan Reddy (also JK Election In charge), Union Minister Dr Jitender Singh, and other senior leaders from the region.

The primary agenda of the meeting was to strategize for the assembly elections in Jammu & Kashmir and finalize the party’s candidates for the various Assembly seats. Sources indicate that the BJP has meticulously reviewed its position in the region, with a detailed discussion on the strategy for each of the 90 assembly seats. The party is expected to release its first list of candidates within the next 24 hours, marking a crucial step in its election preparations.

Focus On Key Seats And Winning Prospects

According to sources within the BJP, the party is likely to contest around 60 seats in Jammu & Kashmir, focusing on areas where it believes it has strong winning prospects. This includes all the seats in the Jammu region and select seats in the Kashmir Valley. BJP’s leadership is said to be confident in its preparation and is determined to implement all necessary steps to enhance its position in these key constituencies.

In a significant move, sources also revealed that the party is likely to change several faces during the assembly polls. This reshuffling is part of the BJP’s strategy to inject fresh energy into its campaign and appeal to a broader electorate. By introducing new candidates, the party aims to address regional dynamics and voter expectations more effectively.

Strategic Planning And Candidate Selection

The meeting highlighted BJP’s commitment to a strategic and methodical approach to the elections. The leadership is keen on selecting candidates who not only have strong local support but also align with the party’s broader vision for Jammu & Kashmir. By focusing on regions where the party has historically performed well, BJP aims to consolidate its base and expand its influence in new areas.

A party spokesperson confirmed that the BJP is fully prepared for the elections and is leaving no stone unturned in its efforts to secure a significant mandate in Jammu & Kashmir. The forthcoming release of the candidate list is expected to set the tone for the BJP’s election campaign, with a strong emphasis on regional issues, development, and national security.

Implications For The Upcoming Elections

This meeting is seen as a pivotal moment in the BJP’s electoral strategy for Jammu & Kashmir. As the party gears up for the elections, the decisions made during this meeting will likely shape its campaign and influence its performance at the polls. BJP’s focus on contesting in strategically important seats underscores its intent to play a decisive role in the future political landscape of Jammu & Kashmir.

With the Assembly elections on the horizon, BJP’s leadership is clearly prioritising a well-coordinated and impactful campaign. The expected changes in candidate faces signal the party’s adaptability and its efforts to resonate with the changing aspirations of the electorate. The outcomes of this meeting and the subsequent release of the candidate list will be closely watched by political observers and the electorate alike, as the party moves forward in its quest to strengthen its foothold in the region.

</excerpt>

In a significant development in the union territory of Jammu and Kashmir, top sources have revealed that the banned Jamaat-e-Islami will contest the upcoming Assembly elections on seven seats as independents. This move comes amid ongoing speculations about the political landscape in the region.

Sources disclosed that Jamaat-e-Islami had originally planned to contest 19 seats across Kashmir. However, after the union government maintained the ban on the organisation under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) on Friday, the number has now been reduced to seven. Among these, key constituencies in the southern region of Kashmir and the Handwara and Sopore seats in North Kashmir are likely to be included.

Jamaat leaders had been awaiting the revocation of the ban imposed in February 2019 and reportedly engaged in several rounds of talks with the government. Despite their efforts, the ban remains in place, prompting the organisation to proceed with a more limited electoral strategy.

Insider sources revealed that a crucial meeting was held in Srinagar on Saturday, chaired by Ghuman Qadir Lone, General Secretary of Jamaat-e-Islami. During the meeting, it was decided that the organisation would field independent candidates in the Assembly elections, focusing on the seven finalised seats.

The decision marks a significant shift in the political strategy of Jamaat-e-Islami as they navigate the complexities of the region’s electoral dynamics under continued restrictions.

The selection process, marked by careful scrutiny and internal deliberations, will culminate in a key meeting chaired by Ram Madhav in Jammu.

BJP is expected to send a panel of potential candidates for each Assembly constituency to its headquarters in New Delhi. The final decision on the candidates will be made by the National Election Committee, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Party insiders suggest that a significant shift is on the horizon, with 30-40% of the current candidates likely to be replaced by younger faces, signalling a strategic push towards fresh leadership in the region.

In a move that has generated much speculation, BJP’s J&K President, Ravinder Raina, is likely to contest from his ancestral seat in Nowshera. Similarly, General Secretary Sunil Sharma is expected to throw his hat in the ring from the Padder Nagseni constituency.

This assembly poll, with its unique political significance, will be a key indicator of the BJP’s strategy and positioning in Jammu and Kashmir, a region that has long been at the centre of India’s political discourse. The upcoming meeting and final selections are eagerly awaited, setting the stage for what promises to be a crucial electoral battle.

</excerpt>

Union Minister G. Kishan Reddy on Thursday criticised Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s visit to Jammu and Kashmir, attributing Gandhi’s ability to dine at Lal Chowk in Srinagar to the achievements of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government over the past decade. He also challenged Rahul Gandhi to clarify Congress party’s stance on Article 370 and the National Conference’s resolution.

“Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi should tell the people of the country about the resolution of the National Conference. They should also talk about Congress’s stand on Article 370. Do they want to snatch the rights of the people of Jammu and Kashmir again?” Reddy questioned while speaking to reporters in Jammu. He added, “It is due to the 10 years of work by the Narendra Modi government that he (Rahul Gandhi) was able to go to Lal Chowk and eat food last night.”

Rahul Gandhi, along with Congress Rajya Sabha MP Mallikarjun Kharge, met with party workers in Jammu and Kashmir earlier on Thursday, in the lead-up to the first Assembly elections in the region since the abrogation of Article 370.

Polling in Jammu and Kashmir is scheduled to take place in three phases on September 18, 25, and October 1, with the counting of votes on October 4. This election is significant as it marks the first since the abrogation of Article 370 in August 2019.

The region comprises 90 Assembly constituencies, including 74 general seats, nine reserved for Scheduled Tribes (ST), and seven for Scheduled Castes (SC). The total electorate stands at 87.09 lakh, including 44.46 lakh male, 42.62 lakh female, 169 transgender individuals, 82,590 persons with disabilities, 73,943 very senior citizens, 2,660 centenarians, 76,092 service electors, and 3.71 lakh first-time voters.

Jammu and Kashmir will be heading to the polls after a decade-long gap, as the last Assembly election was held in 2014.

</excerpt>

Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Rajiv Kumar on Thursday asserted that despite attempts by certain forces to disrupt the upcoming Assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir, the Election Commission of India (ECI) is fully equipped to ensure free and fair elections. Kumar emphasised that “the ballot is the answer to such forces.”

“There are forces determined to disrupt the election process, but we are fully prepared, and the ballot is the answer to such forces,” CEC Kumar stated after briefing election observers for Jammu and Kashmir and Haryana.

Speaking to the media, Kumar detailed the preparations, saying, “We briefed election observers today. General, Police, and Expenditure Observers from several states attended the briefing. Observers were instructed to be accessible to political parties and candidates to address grievances and ensure strict adherence to election rules.”

Kumar underscored that the ECI is vigilant and ready to tackle any challenges that may arise during the elections in both J&K and Haryana.

“The world is watching the elections in J&K. Some forces are adamant about disrupting the election process, but we are ready to handle them. During the Lok Sabha elections, we witnessed tremendous enthusiasm in J&K, with record voter turnout. I believe the ballot is the answer to everything. The people of J&K will shape their destiny with their own hands by participating in the voting process,” he added.

The CEC also highlighted the Commission’s preparedness to combat misinformation and fake narratives during the election period.

“We are vigilant and will respond promptly to such false narratives. Our officers will closely monitor these issues,” he said.

The Jammu and Kashmir Assembly elections will be conducted in three phases: September 18, September 25, and October 1, covering a total of 90 Assembly constituencies. The last Assembly elections in the region were held in 2014.

The Election Commission has also scheduled Haryana’s Assembly elections for October 1, with results for both regions to be counted on October 4.

The notification for the first phase of the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly elections was unveiled on Monday, marking a significant milestone in the 2024 electoral process. Voting for the first phase, which includes 24 constituencies, is scheduled for September 18. Candidates have until August 27 to submit their nominations, with scrutiny on August 28 and the final withdrawal date on August 30.

</excerpt>

As Jammu and Kashmir gears up for its upcoming Legislative Assembly elections, the electoral landscape has become more vibrant and inclusive, with over 93,000 new voters added to the rolls. This surge reflects the voices of many first-time voters, eager to shape the future of their communities.

The recent completion of the Special Summary Revision of Photo Electoral Rolls across all twenty districts has not only increased the total number of eligible voters to 88.03 lakh but also marked a significant step towards ensuring that every eligible citizen has the chance to participate in the democratic process.

“We’ve worked tirelessly to make sure that our electoral rolls are accurate and inclusive,” said the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) of J&K UT. “Our aim is to give every eligible person a voice while cleaning up the rolls to ensure the integrity of our elections.”

The final roll now includes 44.89 lakh men, 43.13 lakh women, and 168 third-gender electors. A particularly heartening development is the increase of young voters in the 18-19 age group, with nearly 46,000 new names added—over half of them women. “This is a sign of hope,” the CEO noted. “Our youth are stepping forward, ready to contribute to the direction of our Union Territory.”

This growth is credited to the diligent efforts of local election officers and the successful implementation of the SVEEP (Systematic Voters’ Education and Electoral Participation) plan, which has focused on making the electoral process more accessible and understandable to all citizens.

Women’s participation has seen a meaningful boost, with the gender ratio improving to 961, up by two points. This is a testament to the relentless work put into reaching out to women across J&K, ensuring their voices are heard.

The increase in the number of polling stations—from 11,629 to 11,838—also speaks to the commitment to making voting more convenient. Now, voters can cast their ballots at stations closer to their homes, with most polling stations within two kilometers of where people live.

Jammu and Kashmir’s electorate is diverse, with 83,191 registered Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) and 2,428 centenarians—voters over 100 years old—who stand as a living testament to the enduring spirit of democracy.

As the CEO put it, “Every vote counts, and every voter matters. Our goal is to empower every eligible voter to take part in this pivotal election. Your vote is your voice—let it be heard.”

The call to action is clear: with elections approaching, every eligible voter in Jammu and Kashmir is encouraged to step forward and contribute to the democratic process, ensuring their voice shapes the future of the Union Territory.

</excerpt>

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is gearing up for a high-stakes campaign in Jammu and Kashmir, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, BJP President J.P. Nadda, and Defence Minister Rajnath Singh set to lead the charge. These top leaders will begin their rallies by the end of August, continuing through September, in the lead-up to the three-phase Assembly elections in the Union Territory.

According to top BJP leaders, Prime Minister Modi will spearhead the campaign, holding around 10 rallies across Jammu and Kashmir. Meanwhile, Amit Shah and Rajnath Singh are expected to hold between 15 to 20 rallies each, with Nadda likely to address 10 to 12 rallies. A high-level national team, in consultation with the J&K BJP unit, is finalising the detailed schedule to ensure comprehensive coverage of all 43 Assembly constituencies in the BJP’s stronghold of Jammu division.

In addition to focusing on Jammu, BJP plans to hold rallies in Kashmir, aiming to contest nearly all 47 seats in the Valley. The party intends to go solo in the election, contesting all 90 Assembly seats without forming pre-poll alliances.

The campaign strategy is being meticulously crafted by Union Minister G Kishen Reddy, Election In charge for Jammu and Kashmir, Union Minister of State in the Prime Minister’s Office Dr Jitendra Singh, and BJP National General Secretary Tarun Chugh. These leaders have been tasked with screening candidates for the 90 seats, ensuring a strong roster of contenders.

BJP’s Jammu and Kashmir Chief, Ravinder Raina, has been actively involved in discussions in New Delhi, meeting with senior leaders including Amit Shah and JP Nadda to finalise the election strategy and potential candidates.

BJP’s campaign is set to include not just the top four leaders but also several union ministers, chief ministers from BJP-ruled states, and senior party leaders from across the country, who will all contribute to the campaign efforts across Jammu and Kashmir.

The elections, set to be held in three phases on September 18, September 25, and October 1, mark a critical moment for BJP in the Union Territory. The party, which won 25 seats in the 2014 elections, aims to expand its influence, particularly in the newly configured 43-seat Jammu region.

Jammu and Kashmir’s Assembly now comprises 90 seats, following a reconfiguration that added six seats in Jammu division and one in the Kashmir valley, while Ladakh, now a separate union territory, no longer contributes to the Assembly. Additionally, there are provisions for the nomination of five MLAs, including two Kashmir migrants, two women, and one Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir (PoJK) refugee.

With the BJP’s top brass leading the charge, the party is set to make a formidable push to secure a majority in the upcoming elections.
