The ban follows the deadly Pahalgam terror attack. Exceptions apply for medical, disaster, and security operations.
</excerpt>

A new directive has declared the Amarnath Yatra 2025 routes as a ‘No Flying Zone’, strengthening security after the recent Pahalgam terror attack. The Jammu and Kashmir government announced that starting July 1 until August 10, all aerial platforms, including drones and balloons, are strictly banned along the pilgrimage routes.

This decision follows the April 22 attack in Pahalgam that claimed 26 lives, prompting heightened measures to protect pilgrims.

To ensure pilgrim safety, the J&K Government declares #Pahalgam and #Baltal routes of the Amarnath Yatra as “No Flying Zones” from July 1, 2025. Drones, paragliders, and aerial activities are banned, except for security and emergency services. Strict compliance is urged.@diprjk… pic.twitter.com/1EuJ4Cb1pK

Amarnath Yatra Flight Ban

The Jammu and Kashmir Home Department, following orders from Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha, imposed this comprehensive and immediate ban. It blocks all aviation platforms and devices, including drones, UAVs, and balloons, along both Pahalgam and Baltal axes. However, the government allowed specific exceptions for medical evacuations, disaster management, essential relief efforts, and security force surveillance.

Authorities will soon issue a detailed standard operating procedure (SOP) outlining these exceptions. The Union Ministry of Home Affairs advised full aerial restrictions to maintain strict vigilance during the sensitive and high-risk pilgrimage.

All stakeholders thoroughly assessed the security situation and unanimously agreed to add additional logistical support and enforce stronger measures for this year’s yatra.

Pilgrimage Under Heavy Security

The annual Amarnath Yatra will start on July 3, attracting thousands of pilgrims from across the country. Authorities have stepped up security following the recent terrorist attack in Pahalgam, ensuring no disruptions occur during the pilgrimage. Security personnel have already strengthened patrols and installed advanced surveillance systems across the designated routes.

Federal and state agencies now actively coordinate their efforts to maintain strict safety protocols. Officials have enforced a ban on drones and balloons to prevent aerial threats and eliminate any risks of unauthorised surveillance or attacks. The administration has left no stone unturned, implementing robust security layers, deploying additional forces, and closely monitoring intelligence inputs to avoid any untoward incidents.

Officials have also improved logistical support, ensuring that all the emergency services remain ready throughout the pilgrimage. The government aims to guarantee that the yatra proceeds peacefully, reflecting its strong commitment to every pilgrim’s safety and well-being.

The train offers comfort in freezing temperatures and will complete the Katra-Srinagar trip in just 3 hours.
</excerpt>

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday inaugurated the first-ever Vande Bharat Express to Srinagar, marking a major milestone in Indian Railways’ expansion in Jammu and Kashmir. This is Modi’s first visit to the region since the Pahalgam terror attack in April.

</excerpt>

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has chosen to pull out of two major ACC tournaments. These include the Women’s Emerging Teams Asia Cup and the Men’s Asia Cup, both scheduled for later this year. This decision, reported by The Indian Express, comes at a time of increased political tensions between India and Pakistan.

Political Strain Triggers the Move

Recently, a terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, along with a military clash, worsened ties between the two nations. As a result, the BCCI informed the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) that it would not participate in the upcoming events.

BCCI Protests Pakistan Minister Leading ACC

Importantly, the ACC is now headed by Mohsin Naqvi, Pakistan’s Interior Minister and PCB chairman. This has become a key reason for India’s withdrawal. The BCCI believes playing under a Pakistan minister’s leadership goes against national sentiment.

A BCCI source told the newspaper, “The Indian team can’t play in a tournament that is organised by the ACC whose chief is a Pakistan minister. That’s the sentiment of the nation. We have verbally communicated to ACC about our withdrawal from the upcoming Women’s Emerging Teams Asia Cup, and our future participation in their events too is on hold. We are in constant touch with the Indian government.”

Naqvi Took Over from Sri Lankan Official

Previously, Shammi Silva of Sri Lanka Cricket served as the interim ACC chief. He held the position after Jay Shah, the BCCI secretary, stepped down. Shah began his role as ICC Chairman on December 1, 2023.

Future of Men’s Asia Cup in Jeopardy

Consequently, the BCCI’s decision casts doubt on the Men’s Asia Cup. Though originally planned to be held in India, organizers had already considered shifting the venue to Sri Lanka or the UAE, likely due to the rising tension.

Sponsors Could Back Out

Moreover, India’s cricket team remains the biggest draw in global cricket. Without them, the tournament may lose its charm. If there’s no India-Pakistan match, many Indian sponsors could back out. This would likely hurt the tournament’s revenue and popularity.

Similar Conflict Occurred in 2023

Interestingly, a similar situation happened during the 2023 Asia Cup. Back then, Pakistan was set to host the entire event. It would have been the country’s first major multi-nation event since the 1996 World Cup.

However, the BCCI refused to send the Indian team to Pakistan. As a result, most matches—including the final—shifted to Sri Lanka, while Pakistan hosted only a few games.

</excerpt>

When British Raj ended in 1947, it left a divided subcontinent behind. India and Pakistan came into existence along with the Partition, and it resulted in widespread communal riots, mass migration, and the displacement of millions. One of the most disputed legacies of the division was the princely state of Jammu and Kashmir.

Princely states were, at the time of Partition, offered a choice to accede to India or Pakistan. Maharaja Hari Singh, who ruled Jammu and Kashmir, first wished to keep his state independent. Later, in October 1947, Pakistani tribal militias invaded Kashmir, when Hari Singh requested the assistance of India. In exchange, he agreed to the Instrument of Accession, under which Indian forces were flown into Kashmir. This act triggered the Kashmir dispute.

The First War and the UN Intervention

The First Indo-Pak War broke out in 1947-48 regarding control over Kashmir. The war ended in 1949 with a ceasefire brokered by the United Nations, leading to the region being partitioned along the Line of Control (LoC). India had control over about two-thirds of the region, while Pakistan had one-third, which it calls “Azad Jammu and Kashmir.”

The UN also advocated a plebiscite to decide the fate of Kashmir, but it never took place as there were disagreements regarding the conditions.

The Second, Third Wars Effecting Jammu and Kashmir

Kashmir was still at the focus of the 1965 Indo-Pak War when Pakistan had initiated Operation Gibraltar with the goal of infiltrating troops into Kashmir to foment rebellion. India responded with extensive military action. The war ended with the Tashkent Agreement, mediated by the Soviet Union.

India and Pakistan clashed again in 1971, primarily for East Pakistan (now Bangladesh). Although the conflict was not specifically about Kashmir, its consequences resulted in the Shimla Agreement, where both countries mutually agreed to settle their problems bilaterally, including Kashmir.

Kargil Conflict: The 1999 Flashpoint

In 1999, Pakistani troops and militants overran strategic heights in the Kargil sector. India launched Operation Vijay, pushing the intruders back. The war was a risky escalation since it came on the heels of nuclear tests in 1998 by both nations.

Kargil reaffirmed Kashmir’s place as an international hotbed and brought to light the nuclear danger.

Terrorism and the Emergence of Proxy War

From the late 1980s, Pakistan-sponsored militants and terror organizations such as Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) and Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) stepped up attacks in Indian-occupied Kashmir. Such significant events include the 2001 attack on the Indian Parliament and the 2008 Mumbai attacks.

India has repeatedly accused Pakistan of employing terrorism as a strategic instrument in Kashmir. Pakistan denies this, though international observers have attested to the existence of terror infrastructure across the line of control.

Article 370 Abrogation: A New Chapter in Jammu and Kashmir

In August 2019, India revoked Article 370, canceling Jammu and Kashmir’s special status and dividing it into two Union Territories. Pakistan condemned the action and reduced diplomatic ties.

India referred to it as a domestic integration process. The decision re-ignited tensions, escalated LoC hostilities, and concentrated international attention on the region.

Pahalgam Terror Attack Triggers Operation Sindoor

The battle raged again in 2025 when terrorists launched a brutal attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, killing 26 civilians. The Resistance Front (TRF), a proxy for Lashkar-e-Taiba, owned the attack. The attack fanned national indignation in India and demanded prompt military reprisal.

India initiated Operation Sindoor on 7th May 2025 against terror camps in Pakistan and PoK. Nine locations were identified and targeted by drone attacks and precision missiles. It was a quick and organized operation to destroy the command hubs responsible for the Pahalgam attack.

India and Pakistan traded heavy cross-border fire, including artillery and air support, for four days. The situation reached a dangerous level before a ceasefire was negotiated on May 10 through desperate diplomatic interventions.

After the ceasefire, Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif indicated a willingness to talk. But Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar made it clear: India would talk only if Pakistan demonstrated visible and verifiable action against terror outfits and surrendered wanted terrorists.

Strategic Importance of Kashmir

Kashmir’s geography provides it with unparalleled strategic importance. It shares borders with China, Pakistan, and Afghanistan, and dominates water sources critical to Pakistan’s agriculture, particularly the Indus River.

Dominion over Kashmir also carries symbolic importance. To India, it confirms sovereignty and integrity. To Pakistan, it is a cause linked to national identity and past claims.

The Road Ahead: Peace or Perpetual Conflict?

In spite of historical peace gestures such as trade and bus communications, trust still eludes. Any terror attack or military move negates tentative diplomatic gains.

Recent words, though, on both sides do provide a ray of hope. If Pakistan cracks down on terror organizations and India remains receptive to positive dialogue, then there can be a possibility of meaningful advancement.

Until then, Kashmir will continue to be the most tense flashpoint between two nuclear-armed neighbors, a place where history, politics, and ideology continue to clash with cataclysmic results.

</excerpt>

A violent face-off erupted on Thursday morning in the Nader locality of Tral, Awantipora, J&K with security personnel fighting terrorists. Two terrorists are said to be stuck in the crossfire. This encounter comes in the wake of the recent killing of three Lashkar-e-Taiba handlers in Shopian. These operations are part of India’s broader crackdown against terror under Operation Keller and Operation Sindoor.

At the same time, tensions between Pakistan and India have escalated following Indian troops launching targeted attacks on terror camps along the border. These events mark a serious escalation of India’s counterterror campaign.

Fresh clash in Tral

The new gunfight started early on Thursday in Nader, Tral. J&K Police confirmed the encounter through their official X handle. They said, “Encounter has started at Nader, Tral area of Awantipora. Police and security forces are on the job. Further details shall follow.” Sources report two terrorists are still trapped as forces continue the operation.

Two days prior to the Tral encounter, security personnel gunned down three terrorists in Shopian’s Shukroo forest. All were Lashkar-e-Taiba operatives. Two of them have been identified by police of J&K. The operation, codenamed ‘Operation Keller,’ resulted in the seizure of a large quantity of weapons and ammunition. A video from the location reveals rifles, grenades, bullets, wallets, and backpacks recovered from the terrorists.

Operation Keller and Operation Sindoor

Both Shopian and Tral operations fall under a larger anti-terror operation. Operation Sindoor has an extended regional mandate, while Operation Keller targets South Kashmir. Both the operations have aimed to break up the networks of militants and prevent cross-border infiltration.

Indian troops on May 8 carried out coordinated precision raids on terror camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. Their targets were top Lashkar-e-Taiba and Jaish-e-Mohammed camps at Bahawalpur and Muridke. The raids killed several of the terror groups’ top leaders.

Pakistan’s attempted retaliation

Pakistan tried to strike back with missile and drone strikes. But Indian forces managed to neutralise all dangers. The Indian Air Force (IAF) retaliated by attacking key Pakistani military installations. IAF fighter planes devastated airbases and radar installations. They also jammed Pakistan’s Chinese-made air defence systems during the attack.

The continuous Tral encounter and earlier Shopian offensive indicate India’s hardened anti-terror stance. Supported by high-impact cross-border actions and in-depth intelligence, Indian forces continue to disassemble militant infrastructure. The next few days could witness more escalations as tensions with Pakistan continue and the security grid remains on its toes.

</excerpt>

The border villages of Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) are once again filled with uncertainty and fear. Even though PM Narendra Modi has given a stern warning to Pakistan-sponsored terrorism, people in these villages are still suspicious.

They are afraid that the hostilities will not last, and Pakistan’s army will again start targeting their villages. There has been recent shelling, especially in Samba district, which has put the people on their toes and further raised their fears.

New Fears in Border Villages

The fear of border villagers is a result of recent horrific incident that shook their lives in J&K. People in Samba district heard explosions and saw shells fall on their homes. A house was badly damaged when shell shrapnel blasted the kitchen and roof. For the villagers, this was a reminder that they are under threat all the time despite diplomatic guarantees.

#WATCH | J&K | A resident of Samba, Jitendra Singh, says, “Trust is a big thing, but we cannot trust Pakistan as we don’t know when they would violate the ceasefire. They have done this earlier as well…” https://t.co/gtqYLkwTpE pic.twitter.com/rxXjNkJ36D

— ANI (@ANI) May 11, 2025

Pakistan’s Aggression: A Permanent Menace

Even with understandings between India and Pakistan to keep the Line of Control (LoC) peaceful, such incidents discourage any possibility of long-term peace. Pakistan’s army has never demonstrated restraint, and the latest shelling further fuels the distrust between the two countries. Such regular attacks on civilian settlements reveal a pattern of aggression that resists appeals for calm.

PM Modi’s Strong Stand Against Terrorism

PM Modi has indicated that India will not stand for Pakistan-backed terrorism. His message, while denouncing the ongoing sponsorship of terror across the border, has been unequivocal. Yet villagers along the border remain uncertain if words will be followed by action on the other side. They worry that the suspension of hostilities will be violated once more, exposing them to renewed attacks.

Life in Constant Fear

Each day in these border territories is lived constantly under the fear of an oppressive attack. Every villager’s life hangs under a sword with every minute filled with anxiety hearing the news about explosions or arrivals of shells. Not knowing when they would face another episode of violence at the hands of Pakistan’s army keeps them suffocated by misery.

As tensions continue to simmer, these border towns are a witness to the shaky peace between Pakistan and India. Even as talks are held at the diplomatic level, the situation on the ground is bleak for residents of the Line of Control shadow.

Security remains tight, and air traffic stays suspended.
</excerpt>

The Kashmir Valley is gradually resuming routine life. Schools in J&K resumed on May 13, 2025, after being closed for three weeks. The schools were shut following the fatal April 22 Pahalgam attack and India’s tough military response under Operation Sindoor.

As students are back in school, tension still prevails in the region. Many civilian flights to and from border regions continue to be suspended in the face of security warnings and the threat of more retaliatory action from the other side.

Back to Classrooms, But Under Surveillance

Students stepped back into schools under close security. Attendance was sporadic. While some parents showed relief, others were reluctant to send their kids, concerned about further upsets. Local authorities ensured patrol and rapid response teams were functional throughout school areas.

Some schools even organized mock exercises to comfort students and teachers.

Flights Halted as Precaution

Civilian air traffic over border-facing regions such as Jammu, Poonch, and Rajouri remained grounded. Security reasons were cited by authorities. Intelligence agencies issued alerts against potential aerial intrusions or attempts to disrupt civilian infrastructure.

Helicopter services to border regions were also suspended temporarily. The Indian Air Force was kept on high alert status, prepared to intercept threats.

Operation Sindoor Still Echoes

The impact of Operation Sindoor still resonates in the area. While the military was successful, security organs are still jumpy. Vigilance continues to be stringent, particularly at borders with Pakistan. India’s intelligence agencies are still picking up chatter in communication that implies that Pakistan-based units may orchestrate further attacks.

Even in fear, life in J&K begins to evidence resilience. The markets reopened, public transport became operational, and tourists trickled back. Authorities pointed out that the reopening of schools was an act of defiance against terror and fear.

India’s military offensive may have unnerved the adversary, but attention now turns towards defending peace in the homefront.

Omar Abdullah and officials expressed serious concern.
</excerpt>

In a dramatic turn of events, the ceasefire announced between India and Pakistan on Saturday evening fell apart within hours as explosions and drone sightings were reported across Jammu and Kashmir.

The truce, declared following four days of intense military escalation, cross-border drone strikes, and missile attacks, was expected to take effect from 5:00 pm IST. Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri stated earlier in the day, “It was agreed between them that both sides would stop all firing and military action on land and in the air and sea with effect from 1700 hours Indian Standard Time today,” referring to a call between the DGMOs of both nations.

Violations Begin Hours Later

However, barely hours into the ceasefire, security forces in Srinagar and Jammu responded to a fresh wave of drone incursions. Drone sightings were followed by explosions, prompting India’s air defence units to engage aggressively.

Citizens of Srinagar heard multiple loud blasts after dusk, particularly near the Batwara area—home to key Army installations. “This is no ceasefire. The air defence units in the middle of Srinagar just opened up,” former J&K Chief Minister Omar Abdullah posted on X. In another post, he added, “What the hell just happened to the ceasefire? Explosions heard across Srinagar!!”

According to officials, drones were intercepted in several districts, including Baramulla, Anantnag, Verinag, Safapora, and Bandipora. In Jammu and Udhampur, air raid sirens blared, followed by multiple explosions and temporary blackouts in certain areas.

Cross-Border Shelling and Gunfire

In addition to drone threats, Pakistani troops engaged in mortar shelling and small arms fire from the International Border and LoC areas including RS Pura, Akhnoor, and Rajouri’s Nowshera sector. A drone was reportedly shot down in the Anantnag high ground, close to another Army location.

Emergency Alert for Civilians

As tensions escalated, the Amritsar Deputy Commissioner issued emergency safety guidelines for citizens, urging people to remain indoors, turn off lights, and stay away from windows, balconies, and rooftops. Emergency contact numbers were also shared for assistance. “By way of abundant caution, please remain indoors with lights off and move away from windows. Please do not move out on the road, balcony or terrace. Don’t panic,” read the public advisory.

India’s Response and Misri’s Statement

Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri condemned the breach in a late-night press briefing. “For the last few hours, there have been repeated violations of the understanding (which was) arrived at earlier this evening,” he said. He added that the armed forces have been granted a “free hand” to respond to any further provocations along both the LoC and International Border.

Pakistan Accuses India, Faces Criticism

In contrast, the Pakistani Foreign Ministry issued a statement late Saturday, falsely accusing India of breaking the ceasefire and claimed its forces were “told to act with restraint.” Analysts see this as a sign of the widening rift between Pakistan’s civilian government and its military establishment.

Tensions have escalated rapidly since India launched Operation Sindoor on May 7, targeting terror launchpads in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir in retaliation for the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack. Since then, Pakistan has allegedly tried to hit back by targeting both military and civilian areas along India’s northern and western borders.

Stay safe and avoid rumors, he appeals to residents.
</excerpt>

As military tensions rise between Pakistan and India, former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah made an appeal on social media late on Friday evening. He urged people in Jammu to stay calm, after there was a total blackout in the region with alarms sounding and reports of explosions sending panic through the region.

“It’s my earnest appeal to everyone in & around Jammu, please stay off the streets, stay at home or at the nearest place you can comfortably stay at for the next few hours,” Omar Abdullah tweeted. “Ignore rumours, don’t spread unsubstantiated or unverified stories & we will get through this together.”

Sounds of Blasts, Sirens, Citywide Blackout says Omar Abdullah

In a series of tweets, Omar Abdullah reported hearing “intermittent sounds of blasts, probably heavy artillery,” from his location, underlining the gravity of the situation.A video post showing the pitch-black streets of Jammu accompanied by air raid sirens supported his remarks.

India’s air defence response to incoming Pakistani drones appears to have caused the blackout, as the drones were shot down near the border. Although the Indian government has not issued a formal statement, security personnel remain on high alert in border towns like Jammu and Pathankot.

Pahalgam Attack Heightens Fears

A terrorist attack in Pahalgam preceded the incidents in Jammu. Suspected militants, allegedly backed by Pakistan, opened fire at a convoy of Army engineers. The attack killed two personnel and injured four others. Authorities have linked Thursday’s attack to the rising tensions along the Line of Control (LoC) and widely condemned it.

In response, Indian security forces initiated Operation Sindoor, a comprehensive counter-insurgency operation aimed at dismantling terror networks in the Pahalgam-Anantnag region. Security sources confirmed that forces had dismantled several hideouts and neutralized at least three militants within the first 24 hours.

Omar Abdullah Urges Restraint as Tensions Mount

Omar Abdullah’s public communication has served as one of the few real-time updates from inside Jammu, urging restraint and civic discipline amid the chaos. “We must trust our armed forces and avoid panic. Please don’t share or believe in fake forwards,” he warned.

With Indian forces ongoing in their operations and citizens taking shelter indoors, the situation remains amorphous. We can expect greater clarity as soon as formal statements are released on both Operation Sindoor and the progress made on the Jammu intercepts.

</excerpt>

Tensions at the India-Pakistan border rose on Friday night following a series of massive explosions that resonated through Jammu, purportedly after Indian air defence systems intercepted Pakistani drones during a region-wide blackout. The episode has added to public fear in the wake of this week’s fatal Pahalgam attack and the Indian Armed Forces’ immediate retaliatory response in Operation Sindoor.

Drone Incursion in Jammu During Blackout Increases Civilian Panic

According to videos posted by ANI, blasts were reported in Jammu when Indian troops encountered and disposed of aerial targets in the form of suspected Pakistani drones. According to the ANI tweet, the videos were “deferred by an unspecified time,” which might have been for operational security.

(Visuals deferred by an unspecified time) pic.twitter.com/ewKZzNoJI9

— ANI (@ANI) May 9, 2025

The drone intrusion is the latest in a series of mounting military provocations. The nation was rocked earlier this week by a terror strike in Pahalgam, Jammu & Kashmir, where militants armed to the teeth fired on a group of Indian pilgrims, leaving several civilian and security personnel casualties. The strike is being attributed to Pakistan-sponsored groups, as per initial intelligence inputs.

Operation Sindoor: India’s Swift Military Response

India retaliated with Operation Sindoor, a multi-branch military operation, targeting terrorist training camps and suspected launchpads along the Line of Control. The operation, which commenced late Wednesday night, has resulted in the targeting and destruction of key targets in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK). Defence sources indicate that the aim was to destroy major terror infrastructure and send out a strong deterrent message.

Friday’s drone attack further establishes the employment of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) by Pakistani forces in reconnaissance and potentially arms delivery operations. Indian security forces, already in high alert, used advanced radar-based defence systems to counter the aerial threats over Jammu.

The blasts raised an alarm among border villages already suffering from fear due to prolonged ceasefire breaches. Locals complained of power cuts moments before the explosions, fuelling suspicion of possible tactical blackout or power line damage.

Restrictions on civilian movement were imposed late at night in sensitive areas, and emergency procedures were initiated across Jammu district. There have been no reports of injury or damage to infrastructure so far, although a full assessment is pending.

Although the Indian government has made no official comment, defence authorities confirmed that high-level surveillance was continuing and troops were prepared to respond to future threats. The country remains unified as military actions continue to fight aggression and safeguard the sovereignty of Indian soil.

Locals instructed to stay indoors as tensions escalate along the Line of Control.
</excerpt>

Heavy live firing was witnessed on Thursday afternoon on the Line of Control (LoC) in Kupwara district of Jammu and Kashmir, sending panic among people in border villages. Pakistani troops opened unprovoked fire on Indian forward posts in the Tangdhar sector, prompting a robust retaliatory action by Indian forces, initial reports said.

The sudden upsurge has prompted the district administration and local police to serve an urgent notice, requesting civilians to remain indoors and refrain from open spaces. All activity in the vicinity of the LoC has been suspended, and locals have been instructed to avoid windows and rooftops as there are chances of shelling.

Cross-Border Firing Causes Panic among Border Villages

Eyewitnesses in the area reported hearing continuous gunfire and loud blasts throughout the afternoon. “It started around 2 PM and hasn’t stopped since. We’ve locked ourselves inside and switched off lights,” said a local resident of Tangdhar village.

Indian Army sources confirmed that it was Pakistani troops who opened the ceasefire violation, and several of the forward posts in Kupwara were heavily fired upon. No one has been injured thus far, although search and rescue units are at readiness and emergency procedures have been initiated.

Region Under High Alert Following Pahalgam Attack

The attack follows just days after the Pahalgam terror attack that killed several civilians when militants opened fire on a tourist vehicle. That attack, which is believed to have been orchestrated by Pakistan-sponsored terror outfits, has already increased security in Jammu and Kashmir.

Analysts feel the new live firing may be a step towards keeping Indian troops busy along the LoC while terror infrastructure on the Pakistani side of the line is still active.

Kupwara Locals Asked to Cooperate With Authorities

The district administration in Kupwara has asked citizens along the borders to stay calm but alert. Schools have been closed, mobile internet services temporarily stopped, and shelter prepared for contingencies, in case tensions escalated further. The Army said that it is keeping a tight eye on developments and will respond forcefully to any escalation.

Security has been enhanced throughout Jammu and Kashmir, with the state on high alert in anticipation of coordinated cross-border operations.

The strike follows the Pahalgam terror attack, fueling further conflict.
</excerpt>

With a rapid and decisive military reaction, Indian security personnel were able to down several Pakistani drones trying to intrude in Jammu airspace on Wednesday night, foiling a massive air threat. This occurs amid intensified India-Pakistan tensions, particularly following the indiscriminate Pahalgam terror attack.

Pakistani Drones Neutralized in Jammu

The drones, which were allegedly dispatched from over the border, were spotted flying over sensitive locations in Jammu, prompting a swift counter-measure. Equipped with precision tracking devices and anti-drone hardware, the Indian military was able to intercept and disable the unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) before they could inflict any harm.

Security officials confirmed the incident, attributing timely intelligence and strong coordination between the Indian Army and Air Force for diffusing the threat. This is a major development in India’s expanding technology ability to repel airborne incursions, particularly with drone warfare becoming more widespread.

Aftermath of the Pahalgam Attack in Jammu and Kashmir

This failed drone attack comes in the wake of recent Pahalgam terror attack, where Indian tourists were targeted by armed militants in a religiously fueled attack. Various civilians died after being questioned about their religion and then ruthlessly shot an act that stunned the country and earned strongest criticism across the world.

The Pahalgam massacre not only revealed the ongoing risk of Islamist extremism but also hardened Indian determination to push the fight to the culprits. Indian intelligence officials suspect Pakistan-based terror groups were responsible for the attack, further aggravating the already tense geopolitical climate.

Operation Sindoor: India’s Counteroffensive

In response to the Pahalgam massacre, India carried out Operation Sindoor, a cross-border precision strike against terror launch pads in Pakistan and PoK. Indian authorities have clarified that the military operation targeted only terrorist infrastructure and did not aim at civilian targets.

Increasing Cross-Border Tensions

The attempted drone incursion seems to be a retaliatory action by Pakistan, perhaps an indication of a new era of asymmetric warfare. Yet, the preemptive strike capability of India and quick neutralization of drones indicate a strong response against air threats.

Security forces remain vigilant, and vigilance has been increased along border areas. As global observers appeal for restraint, India remains steadfast in its defense stance, refusing to accept any more provocation.

The next few days will probably determine the course of India-Pakistan relations, both diplomatic and military, under close observation.

</excerpt>

After Operation Sindoor, Pakistan has accelerated cross-border aggression, resulting in the killing of 13 Indian civilians and wounding 59 others in Poonch district in Jammu and Kashmir. The External Affairs Ministry, on Thursday, confirmed that all the deaths had taken place in Poonch, while the majority of the injuries were also located in the same region.

This escalation comes after India’s targeted missile strikes that hit nine terror camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir. These strikes were aimed directly at responding to the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack that killed 26 civilians, the majority of them tourists. Indian action, billed as “measured, non-escalatory, proportionate, and responsible,” has been met with retaliatory fire across the Line of Control.

Ponch Ceasefire: Worst Ceasefire Breach Since 2021 Truce

Pakistan’s armed reaction, starting with light weaponry fire and culminating in mass artillery barrages after Operation Sindoor, constitutes the gravest ceasefire violation since the truce agreement in February 2021. Government sources close to the development confirmed that Pakistani forces had violated the ceasefire agreement at least 15 times during the period January through early April 2025, but that this had become increasingly common and acute over the last week.

“Unlike isolated, short fire exchanges typically resolved through established mechanisms of communication, the current trend is one of simultaneous salvos at multiple locations,” an official said. This has resulted in wider and prolonged engagements across sectors along the LoC.

Indian Army Fires Back as LoC Borrows Intensity from Eastern Front

In retaliation for the aggression, the Indian Army has struck back with measured strength. On Thursday, Pakistani troops’ artillery and mortar shelling was witnessed in four sectors, although officials reported a relative reduction in intensity from the barrage seen on Wednesday. The Army is still on high alert, with reinforcements and counter-battery arrangements in position.

During the rising hostilities, the Ministry of External Affairs again asserted India’s support for peace but emphasized protecting its people and borders. The dynamics of the situation continue to shift, with border dwellers suffering the greatest impact from this increased aggression.

One attacker was a trained Pakistani commando. J&K jails now face fresh terror threats.
</excerpt>

Security agencies have uncovered significant leads in the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack, which claimed the lives of 26 civilians mostly tourists, after interrogating Lashkar-e-Taiba terrorists held in Jammu and Kashmir prisons.

Sources told Times Now that during questioning by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) inside jail premises, the detained militants named their “masters,” further strengthening claims of Pakistan’s direct involvement in the brutal assault. The revelations pointed to specialised military training provided to the attackers in Pakistan.

According to officials, the terrorists were not only trained in executing high-casualty attacks but also received instructions on constructing hideouts in mountainous terrain and surviving for extended durations in hostile environments. Recent recoveries of terror hideouts in the region further validate these claims.

One of the key attackers in the Baisaran meadow strike was reportedly a former para commando from Pakistan’s elite Special Service Group (SSG), who was “loaned” to the Lashkar-e-Taiba. Identified as Musa, he is suspected of being active in the region for over a year and allegedly played a role in at least three other attacks targeting security personnel and non-locals.

The NIA has also obtained intelligence about the exact locations of terror hideouts scattered across the Kashmir Valley, deepening concerns about an entrenched network still operational.

Terror Alert Sounded Across J&K Jails Amid Fresh Threat

Following these explosive revelations, authorities have issued a terror alert for several Jammu and Kashmir jails that house high-profile terrorists. Intelligence inputs have warned of a possible attack aimed at disrupting ongoing counter-terror operations.

Security has been tightened significantly at key installations, government buildings, and tourist hotspots in and around Srinagar. Sensitive areas such as Dachigam National Park and high-footfall hotels have also come under enhanced surveillance.

High-security prisons like Srinagar’s Central Jail and Kot Balwal Jail in Jammu have undergone thorough security reviews. Officials say these facilities accommodate hardcore terrorists and sleeper cell operatives who are known to provide logistical aid and shelter to active militants.

On Sunday, the Director General of the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), which took over the security of J&K prisons from the CRPF in October 2023, visited Srinagar to assess the emerging threat landscape and strategize with senior law enforcement personnel.

Intelligence sources further suggest that several more terrorists could still be hiding in South Kashmir’s dense forests. Reports indicate that during the Pahalgam attack, some militants may have been deployed in advance to provide cover-fire in case security forces launched a swift counter-operation.

</excerpt>

Jammu and Kashmir National Conference (JKNC) president Farooq Abdullah met with tourists in Pahalgam on Saturday and firmly stated that Kashmir has always been and will remain a part of India. His visit came shortly after the terror attack in the region.

While speaking to the media, Abdullah said the biggest message after the Pahalgam attack is that tourists are not afraid. He remarked, “The people who wanted to spread fear have lost. They (terrorists) have lost. It has been proven today that we are not going to get scared. Kashmir was and will always be a part of India.” He added that people are tired of terrorism and want to see development. “It has been 35 years since we have seen terrorism; we want progress. We want to move forward. We will become a superpower one day,” he said.

Abdullah also dismissed comments made by former Pakistan Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto, suggesting that giving attention to such statements would only hold India back. “If we go by Bilawal Bhutto’s statements, we cannot move forward. I have been saying for a long time that the Indus Water Treaty should be reviewed again. Our rivers and we are the ones who are deprived,” he noted.

His comments followed Bhutto’s admission that Pakistan has a history of supporting terror, acknowledging the country’s troubled past with such groups.

During his visit, Abdullah and JKNC MLA Altaf Kaloo met with Hyder Shah, the father of Syed Adil Hussain Shah. Syed Adil was a local who died trying to save tourists during the Pahalgam attack. Hyder Shah shared his appreciation, saying, “Farooq Abdullah shared our grief and gave us courage in our sorrow, which is helping us move forward.”

Meanwhile, tensions between India and Pakistan have escalated after the deadly Pahalgam attack, which killed 26 tourists. In response, India has taken several strong measures.

The Indian government has immediately banned the import and transit of all goods that come from or are exported via Pakistan. This applies to all products, regardless of their trade status. The Ministry of Commerce and Industry issued a formal notification on Saturday, stating: “In exercise of power conferred by Section 3 read with Section 5 of the Foreign Trade (Development & Regulation) Act, 1992, read with Paragraph 1.02 and 2.01 of the Foreign Trade Policy (FTP) 2023, as amended from time to time, the Central government hereby inserts a new Para 2.20A in the Foreign Trade Policy, 2023 as follows with immediate effect.”

Apart from the trade ban, India also closed the Integrated Check Post (ICP) at Attari and suspended the SAARC Visa Exemption Scheme for Pakistani citizens. These nationals have been given 40 hours to leave the country. Additionally, both countries will reduce the number of staff in their respective High Commissions.

Another major decision includes suspending the Indus Waters Treaty, which was signed in 1960. These steps underline India’s strong diplomatic reaction following the tragic events in Pahalgam.

</excerpt>

On April 22, 28 tourists from Maharashtra had a stroke of luck in Pahalgam Terror Attack. They came to Kashmir’s Baisaran Valley on a holiday, but their journey took an unexpected turn. Waiting for their pony rides, they lingered for 15 minutes haggling for a lower price. This delay, as it later turned out, saved their lives.

Anil Kurane of Kolhapur remembered the incident, stating, “If there hadn’t been the delay, we would have been at the location when the terror attack happened. The roll of martyrs would have included our names as well.” Their luck did not stop there. Just as they were nearing the attack site, their driver ran to alert them about gunfire in the area. They turned back promptly and returned unharmed.

Attack and Its Aftermath

Terrorists fired at tourists in Pahalgam’s Baisaran Valley. The attack in Pahalgam claimed the lives of 26, including Kolhapur, Sangli, Pune, and Ratnagiri tourists. A Nepali national was also killed. The 28 tourists from Maharashtra, who escaped narrowly, understood the severity of the situation only later.

On April 24, the bodies of the victims were taken back to their respective hometowns. The government made arrangements for more than 50 flights to bring the remains back, and 123 bereaved family members traveled with them. Union Home Minister Amit Shah paid respects to the victims, conveying the nation’s grief.

Looking Back at the Near Miss

This near-miss incident brings to the fore the uncertainty of life in war zones. The tourists’ 15-minute delay saved them from being trapped in the fatal attack. But it also brings to the fore the persistent security issues in Kashmir, where tourists and locals are frequently in harm’s way.

The episode highlights the sensitive balance between security and tourism in Kashmir. Though tourism is the backbone of the economy, it is also at risk due to the unstable conditions. While the government is in the process of enhancing security provisions, the state needs to take steps to develop an environment that will make the visitor feel secure without jeopardizing the safety of its people.

</excerpt>

The Pahalgam, Kashmir, terrorist attack on April 22, 2025, resulted in the deaths of 26 and injured several others, jolting Kashmir’s tenuous peace. The violence, perpetrated by the Resistance Front (TRF)—a front for Pakistan-sponsored Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT)—demonstrates Pakistan’s continued role in Kashmir’s bloodshed.

The attack took place close to the LoC, a region long dominated by Pakistan’s military intelligence. Despite India’s attempts to stabilize the region, Pakistan’s sponsorship of terrorism continues to be a significant hurdle to peace.

Role of Pakistan’s X Corps in Kashmir’s Turmoil

Pahalgam attack highlights Pakistan’s strong ties with terror groups in Kashmir. Pakistan’s 12th Infantry Division, being a part of Pakistan’s X Corps, serves as an instrument for training and assisting infiltrators across the LoC. Logistic support is also provided by bases in northern parts of Pakistan-occupied Kashmir for terrorists to get into India. Intelligence intercepts indicate that Pakistan’s military is also engaged in planning attacks, not as wayward elements but as a larger strategy to destabilize the area.

While the international community tends to overlook this military engagement, the facts are undeniable. Terror organizations such as Lashkar-e-Taiba and Jaish-e-Mohammed act with tacit support from Pakistan’s military, employing Kashmir as a strategic weapon. Pakistan’s employment of proxy forces to further its territorial ambitions has turned it into a center for terrorism in the region. This support feeds violence and ensnares Kashmir in a cycle of conflict, keeping it from achieving lasting peace.

Pakistan’s Strategic Support for Terrorism

For decades, Pakistan has used terrorism as an instrument in Kashmir. The support of groups such as Lashkar-e-Taiba and Jaish-e-Mohammed by the military is at the heart of this policy. It is through this “proxy war” strategy that Pakistan can intimidate India without directly fighting it. By arming these entities, training them, and providing them with sanctuaries, Pakistan maintains Kashmir in chaos and prevents India from stabilizing the region.

Despite increased international acknowledgment of Pakistan as a state sponsor of terrorism, Islamabad still refuses to acknowledge its involvement in such operations. The attack on Pahalgam serves as another reminder of the human cost this policy exacts on India, and regional stability at large.

International Community’s Complicity

Although the international community has strong evidence of Pakistan’s involvement in terrorism, it is in most cases quite silent. Pakistan is usually spoken of as being a victim of terrorism, whereas it is a major perpetrator. This silence has enabled Pakistan to keep supporting terrorists with impunity. The world not condemning Pakistan is motivating the sustenance of such harmful policies.

International pressure on Pakistan to end its support for terrorism has been feeble. With no severe consequences, Pakistan’s deep state continues to employ terrorism as an instrument of statecraft. In the meantime, India pays the price for defending itself against these attacks. The Pahalgam tragedy emphasizes the imperative for stronger international denunciation of Pakistan’s role in encouraging terrorism.

</excerpt>

The latest terror attack in Pahalgam has given a deadly blow to Kashmir Tourism, wrecking its reputation as a serene retreat and favorite holiday destination. Militants attacked tourists in this picturesque district on April 22, 2025, killing 26 and injuring several others.

Famous for its serene valleys and stunning beauty, Pahalgam is now the site of horror. The attack undermines Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s efforts to boost Kashmir Tourism and turn the region into an economically resilient tourist hub.

Modi’s Tourism Vision Faces Major Setback

Under Narendra Modi’s leadership, Kashmir saw a tourism boom. The government worked to improve infrastructure and security, which attracted millions of visitors. In 2024, Kashmir welcomed a record 3 million tourists, compared to just 831,000 in 2018. Modi’s administration showcased this success as one of its key achievements.

The current attack, nonetheless, has come to interrupt such progress. Following reports of violence, tourists moved to vacate Kashmir. A rush for return flights created temporary shortages, thus a hike in ticket prices that saw the government step in and order airlines from overcharging clients.

Crippling Blow to Domestic Economy

The attack severely impacted the tourism industry. Local businesses, including taxi services, hotels, and shops, now face significant losses. Shakir Ahmed, who manages a taxi union in Pahalgam, said all 30 of their vehicles are sitting idle. “The streets are suddenly empty,” he added. “We’re losing everything.”

Tourism businesses reported massive cancellations, especially with the busy summer season about to begin. A local travel agent revealed they had to cancel 90% of upcoming bookings. The loss of revenue will have lasting effects on the region’s economy, which relies heavily on tourism.

Effect on J&K’s Whole Tourism Economy

The effect of this attack goes beyond Pahalgam. Tourism is the economic backbone of Jammu and Kashmir, and a huge section of its people depend on tourism-related businesses and employment. The state had achieved great progress in overcoming the period of violence and instability, and record numbers of tourists were pouring into the valley.

But with this latest attack, there is indeed a fear that the tourist influx will slow considerably. With tourists cancelling reservations and refusing to visit the area, other tourist areas such as Srinagar, Gulmarg, and Sonmarg could also be adversely affected.

All the tourism-related industries—hotels, travel operators, and local craftsmen—will take a hit, exacerbating the economic woes of the region.

Modi’s Kashmir Vision in Jeopardy

Modi’s goal of transforming Kashmir into a thriving tourist hub now faces a major challenge. Despite improvements in infrastructure and security, the attack has reminded everyone of the region’s vulnerability. It also raises questions about the government’s decision to revoke Jammu and Kashmir’s special autonomy in 2019. Despite claims of stability, the region continues to suffer from violence.

This tragedy raises questions about the government’s capacity to provide the peace and security required to bring in tourists and investors alike. Kashmir’s image as a peaceful tourist paradise now stands in jeopardy.

Restoring Trust and Security

To recover, the government needs to put security first and rebuild public confidence. Tourists should feel secure, and residents should experience visible benefits to their lives. The government needs to move swiftly to avoid more attacks and get the population safe.

Kashmiris have proved that in the midst of adversity, they remain resolute. In spite of the attack, hospitality remains a way of life for many. Local legislator Sajjad Lone denounced the assault, emphasizing that the welcome culture must continue in Kashmir.

Although the attack has put the valley into mourning, it also reflects the resilience of the people here. Kashmir’s focus on tourism and its economy, which are at stake, rely on the restoration of security and trust.

India may consider a time-sensitive military response amid leadership transitions in Northern Command.
</excerpt>

In one of the most brutal terrorist strikes in Jammu and Kashmir in recent memory, heavily armed militants killed at least 26 people—mostly Hindu tourists—at Pahalgam’s scenic Baisaran Valley on April 22. Survivor accounts say the attackers emerged from nearby forests, opened fire indiscriminately, and asked victims about their religious identity before pulling the trigger. One Muslim local also died in the assault.

The Resistance Force (TRF), believed to be a Lashkar-e-Taiba offshoot backed by Pakistan, claimed responsibility. The attack is being described as the worst civilian massacre in the region in over two decades.

A Chilling Echo of Past Attacks

This attack draws stark parallels with previous terror incidents in Uri (2016) and Pulwama (2019), where India’s military responded swiftly. Back then, Indian forces carried out surgical strikes and air raids across the LoC, signaling a shift in India’s counter-terror doctrine.

Lt Gen DS Hooda, who led the 2016 surgical strikes, had two months remaining in his tenure—time he used to assess, plan, and execute retaliation. In contrast, Lt Gen MV Suchindra Kumar, current Northern Command chief, retires on April 30, just a week after the Pahalgam tragedy. The question now is whether a counterstrike can be launched under his command or left to his successor, Lt Gen Pratik Sharma.

Why Pahalgam Was Targeted

Pahalgam isn’t just a tourist destination—it is the base for the Amarnath Yatra, one of Hinduism’s holiest pilgrimages. Attacking this region carries symbolic, religious, and economic significance. Targeting pilgrims aims to fuel communal tensions and disrupt Kashmir’s fragile tourism economy.

Security experts say the area’s forested terrain and proximity to the LoC make it ideal for terrorist infiltration. Several unmonitored passes in the Pir Panjal range allow militants to cross over easily. Despite advanced surveillance, geography continues to be a key vulnerability.

Sectarian Undercurrents and Pakistan’s Narrative

What makes this attack more disturbing is its sectarian dimension. Eyewitnesses say gunmen asked male victims about their faith before shooting. The massacre occurred just six days after Pakistan Army Chief Gen Asim Munir made a provocative speech, reinforcing the divisive two-nation theory.

“Our forefathers thought we were different from Hindus in every possible aspect of life… We are two nations, we are not one nation,” Munir had said. These remarks are more than rhetoric—they validate the ideological motivations of terror groups like TRF.

Lt Gen Pratik Sharma: Inheriting a Crisis

Lt Gen Sharma, slated to take charge on April 30, may find himself responding to India’s latest national security crisis. He previously commanded the 80 Infantry Brigade and 25 Infantry Division in J&K and served as DG Military Operations. His experience positions him well for a swift and strategic retaliation, if planned post-transition.

However, this doesn’t diminish the role of Lt Gen Kumar, a decorated officer and former Vice Chief of Army Staff. But the timing of the transition raises concerns about operational continuity.

An Attack on the Idea of India

The Pahalgam attack wasn’t just a terror incident—it was an ideological strike. By selectively killing based on religion, the terrorists challenged India’s foundational values of secularism and peaceful coexistence.

As the country mourns, the Modi government is expected to announce its course of action. Whether that involves military strikes or diplomatic escalation, one thing is clear: India’s response must match the gravity of this outrage.

Extra flights, along with waivers on rescheduling and cancellation fees, have been introduced by Air India, IndiGo, and Air India Express.

Special Flights for Affected Passengers

In response to the attack, Air India has announced that it will operate two additional flights from Srinagar to Delhi and Mumbai on Wednesday, April 23. This move is part of the airline’s effort to accommodate passengers impacted by the attack.

Air India further confirmed that its regular flights to and from Srinagar would continue as scheduled. “All our other flights to and from Srinagar will run as scheduled,” the airline confirmed.

IndiGo also announced that it would waive cancellation and rescheduling charges for passengers traveling to or from Srinagar during this difficult period.
Meanwhile, Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde has been actively involved in supporting the victims’ families. Shinde spoke with Civil Aviation Minister K Rammohan Naidu about the incident, highlighting the urgent need for transportation arrangements to bring the bodies of the victims to Mumbai.

Shinde requested that special transport be arranged to bring the victims back to Mumbai as soon as possible, underlining the importance of swift action in this tragic situation.

</excerpt>

In one of the deadliest terror strikes in Jammu and Kashmir since the 2019 Pulwama attack, heavily armed terrorists opened fire at a popular tourist meadow near Pahalgam on Tuesday afternoon, killing at least 27 people, mostly tourists, and injuring 20 others.
Among the deceased were two foreign nationals and two locals, a senior official confirmed, while Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah said the final death toll was still being ascertained. He described the assault as “much larger than anything we’ve seen directed at civilians in recent years.”
The attack occurred around 3 pm at Baisaran, a lush, scenic meadow about six kilometres uphill from Pahalgam, often referred to as ‘mini Switzerland’. As tourists picnicked, took pony rides, or relaxed at local eateries, gunmen suddenly emerged from the surrounding pine forests and opened indiscriminate fire, sending crowds fleeing in panic.
The Resistance Front (TRF), a proxy of the banned Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba, has claimed responsibility. Security officials suspect the terrorists may have infiltrated from Kishtwar and reached Baisaran via Kokernag in south Kashmir.
The incident coincided with the visit of US Vice President J.D. Vance to India and came at a time when Kashmir’s tourist season was gaining momentum.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who is currently in Saudi Arabia, was briefed by Union Home Minister Amit Shah. Shah immediately left for Srinagar to lead a high-level security review.
“I strongly condemn the terror attack in Pahalgam. My condolences to the bereaved families. I pray for the speedy recovery of the injured. The perpetrators will not be spared. Our resolve to fight terrorism is stronger than ever,” the Prime Minister said in a post on X.
Eyewitnesses described a horrific scene, with bodies lying in pools of blood and cries for help echoing across the meadow. “My husband was shot in the head… Seven others were injured,” one woman survivor said over the phone, pleading for urgent medical evacuation.

A tourist said the attackers asked victims their names before opening fire. Victims hailed from several states including Karnataka, Maharashtra, and Gujarat. Among the deceased was businessman Manjunath Rao from Shivamogga, Karnataka. Chief Minister Siddaramaiah expressed his grief and dispatched a team of officials to Kashmir.
Due to Baisaran’s inaccessibility by road, helicopters were used to evacuate the injured, and many locals helped bring victims down on ponies. The government-owned Pahalgam Club was turned into a temporary relief and assistance centre.
The Army, CRPF, and J&K Police rushed to the spot and have since launched a massive anti-terror operation in the area. Emergency control rooms have been set up in Anantnag and Srinagar.
National Conference MLA Altaf Ahmad Wani condemned the attack as “cowardly” and said it violated the basic tenets of Islam. “This was a painful, unexpected attack in an area used primarily for trekking and horse rides,” he said.
Lt Governor Manoj Sinha’s office said, “The entire nation is angry. Our forces will ensure the perpetrators pay a heavy price.”

Tourist movement came to a complete halt, and the once-bustling town of Pahalgam fell silent in the aftermath of the massacre.
While Kashmir has seen a resurgence in tourism in recent years, Tuesday’s attack evoked grim reminders of past violence. In 2000, more than 30 people were killed at the Amarnath base camp in Pahalgam. A year later, 13 died in a terror strike at Sheshnag, and another 11 were killed in 2002.
In May 2023, a tourist couple from Rajasthan was injured in a firing incident at Yannar in Pahalgam. The region also witnessed the chilling 2000 Chhattisinghpora massacre in which 35 Sikhs were killed during President Bill Clinton’s India visit.
Baisaran is a known trekking route to Tulian Lake, offering panoramic views of the Lidder Valley and Pahalgam town. That this idyllic spot became the site of such a horrific attack has left the Valley shaken once again.

</excerpt>

In a shocking incident, terrorists wounded 12 tourists in a violent attack in Baisaran Valley of Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir. The attack was at the height of tourist season and mere weeks ahead of the start of the Amarnath Yatra.

Camouflaged armed militants opened fire on tourists in the upper meadows—an area accessible only by foot or horseback. Officials believe this was a targeted, deliberate attack, which has now raised heightened security issues in the area.

Gunfire in Baisaran: A Valley Becomes Violent

Gunfire suddenly erupted in the high meadows of Baisaran, disrupting the tranquility that typically characterizes the tourist destination. Panicked tourists ran for cover as bullets rang out in the hills.

Security personnel arrived at the scene within minutes. Medical teams took the injured away under challenging circumstances. Due to the remote nature of the valley, rescuers found it hard to reach victims promptly, which hindered the response.

Tourist Season Turns Deadly

Sadly, the timing could not have been worse. Thousands of tourists are already thronging Pahalgam, famous for its peaceful lakes and virgin forests. At the same time, arrangements are underway in full bloom for the Amarnath Yatra, which is about to start on July 3.

The 48-kilometre stretch between Pahalgam is one of the two official routes for the pilgrimage. This planned strike has now thrown a long shadow of fear over both religious faith and tourism in Kashmir.

Amit Shah’s Directives Face a Real-World Test

Earlier this month, Union Home Minister Amit Shah conducted a high-level security review in Jammu and Kashmir. He instructed agencies to root out terrorism and exercise zero tolerance for infiltration. However, this new incident directly tests those assurances.

The government will now have to respond as to why its plans did not keep this attack at bay. Obviously, there is still a gap between policy decisions and on-ground implementation.

Mehbooba Mufti Condemns Attack

Reacting swiftly, PDP chief Mehbooba Mufti condemned the violence and called it “deeply disturbing.” She reminded the public that Kashmir has always greeted tourists with open arms.

I strongly condemn the cowardly attack on tourists in Pahalgam, which tragically killed five and injured several as being reported for now . Such violence is unacceptable and must be denounced.

Historically, Kashmir has welcomed tourists warmly, making this rare incident deeply…

— Mehbooba Mufti (@MehboobaMufti) April 22, 2025

According to Mufti, this rare but shocking incident demands a thorough investigation. She stressed the need to uphold Kashmir’s legacy of hospitality while also ensuring that such incidents never recur. “Such violence is unacceptable,” she stated, urging both accountability and tighter preventive action.

Tourism, Faith, and Kashmir’s Delicate Stability

Beyond question, the terrorists picked their moment well. By attacking peaceful tourists, they sought to scuttle Kashmir’s revival—both as a tourism destination and a center of faith-based pilgrimage.

The valley only recently started healing from decades of strife. But such incidents could easily reverse hard-won trust and once again put Kashmir’s journey to peace on hold.

Reinforce Ground Security Before Yatra Starts

This was no spur-of-the-moment act. This was a planned signal. The administration now has to rethink its security policy, especially in inaccessible areas such as Baisaran. With the Amarnath Yatra just two months away, the government has to put foolproof mechanisms in place.

Safety has to become non-negotiable—not only for pilgrims, but for all visitors who enter the Valley.

</excerpt>

India strongly criticized Pakistan Army Chief Asim Munir’s recent statement on Jammu and Kashmir. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) on Thursday announced that Jammu and Kashmir is an integral part of India.

It went on to add that the only connection Pakistan has with the territory is to leave the illegally occupied portion of it—PoK. Munir, while speaking at a function in Islamabad, referred to Kashmir as the “jugular vein” of Pakistan. India responded by asking how something “foreign” would be in the lifeblood of another nation.

MEA condemns Pakistan’s provocation

The MEA’s acerbic reaction followed Asim Munir’s address at the Overseas Pakistanis Convention. MEA Spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal stated, “This is a Union Territory of India. Its only connection with Pakistan is the vacating of illegally occupied areas.

In a sharp rebuttal to Pak Army Chief General Asim Munir’s remarks calling Kashmir Pakistan’s “jugular vein”, India asserted that the only link between Kashmir and Pakistan is Islamabad’s illegal occupation of part of the region that must be vacated.

What MEA Spokesperson… pic.twitter.com/lFHRkyTmK9

— NEWSDAILY MEDIA GROUP (@NEWSDAILY123) April 17, 2025

He also mocked Asim Munir’s use of the phrase “jugular vein,” challenging the rationale behind referring to another country’s area as critical to your own.

Asim Munir revives Two-Nation Theory

General Asim Munir also rekindled the ideological underpinning of Pakistan—the two-nation theory in his address. He emphasized that Pakistan and India are totally different entities. In his view, Pakistanis need to instruct their children about how their ancestors thought they were inherently different from Hindus in all respects.

Asim Munir highlighted religious, cultural, and ideological differences, declaring, “We are not one nation.” He called on Pakistani families overseas to preserve the “story of Pakistan.”

India’s stand remains unwavering

India has always held the view that Jammu and Kashmir is a domestic issue. Jammu and Kashmir was reorganized as a Union Territory in 2019 after the revocation of Article 370. Ever since, India has spurned any third-party intervention and asserted strongly that Pakistan needs to vacate Pakistan-occupied Kashmir.

Turning sentiment into strategy

Asim Munir’s comments could be a bid to revive nationalist fervor back home. As Pakistan struggles with economic instability and political upheaval, such declarations tend to be a diversion from internal unrest.

India has instead opted to counter with diplomacy and prudence. The MEA’s reaction is in step with its resolute stand—land integrity isn’t up for bargaining, and incendiary utterances won’t change the ground reality.

</excerpt>

Following the killing of a Pakistani terrorist on Friday morning, security personnel killed two more in the Naidgam forests of Chatroo in Kishtwar district, officials stated.

Terrorists Identified, Each With ₹5 Lakh Bounty

The slain terrorists were Jaish-e-Mohammad commander Saifullah, Farman, and Basha, Each carried a reward of ₹5 lakh on their heads.

“Security forces launched an operation in the area on April 9. We first gunned down one terrorist in the morning, and then eliminated two others later on Friday,” said a senior police officer.

Commandos of the elite 2, 5, and 9 Para of the Army, CRPF, and Jammu and Kashmir Police’s SOG participated in the operation.

Snow-Covered Terrain and Aerial Support

The anti-terror operations were carried out in the snow-clad mountains with thick forest cover, “The Army deployed helicopters to trace the fleeing terrorists,” said the officer.

A huge cache of weapons, ammunition, and explosives was seized from the site of the encounter.

Commander of the 5 Sector Assam Rifles Brigadier JVS Rathi and DIG Shridhar Patil of Doda-Kishtwar-Ramban range will brief the media on the whole operation at the headquarters of the 5 Assam Rifles on Saturday.

Simultaneous Anti-Terror Operations in Jammu Region

Security forces have also simultaneously conducted anti-terror operations in Kishtwar and Udhampur districts to hunt down terrorists, who are suspected to be part of a bigger group that had infiltrated through the international border along the Hiranagar sector in Kathua district in recent times.

During continuing anti-terror operations, three armed terrorists, suspected to be from the Jaish-e-Mohammad terror group, stormed into a villager’s residence in Basantgarh, Udhampur district, late Wednesday.

The terrorists consumed food, stole a mobile phone, clothes, shoes, a bag, and an umbrella before they left.

Similar Incident involving Terrorists in Udhampur on April 3

Earlier, on April 3, two terrorists had entered a home in Udhampur’s Chore Panjwa-Khabbal locality of Majalta block, taken the family hostage, and stolen a mobile phone and food forcibly before escaping at about 10 PM.

This is the same region where security forces had spotted terrorists on April 3, the terrorists were initially seen in a forest in Hiranagar sector’s Saniyal village on March 23.

March 27 Firefight Leaves Six Dead

Security personnel and the police have been following the activities of the terrorists ever since, two terrorists and four police officials died during a firefight on March 27 inside Sufain forest, Jakhole village, Kathua district.

However, the ceasefire was also flouted by Pakistan Army troops at the Line of Control in Keri Battal sector in Akhnoor in a bid to thrust weapons-bearing terrorists over the border, tense soldiers foiled the move.

Indian JCO Killed in Cross-Border Fire

In the heavy exchange of fire, a Junior Commissioned Officer (JCO) was severely injured. He was airlifted to a garrison hospital, where he died of his injuries.

“At approximately 2115 hours (9:15 PM), the Pakistani Army opened fire using small arms towards an Indian forward post in the Keri-Battal sector under Police Station Khour, Akhnoor, Jammu & Kashmir.

In response, the Indian Army retaliated by firing small arms in the direction of the aggression,” said officials.

During the exchange, JCO Kuldeep Singh suffered a bullet injury and then died from his injuries, the Army will likely issue a statement soon.

</excerpt>

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) is carrying out raids at multiple locations across Jammu and Kashmir as part of a crackdown on the Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) terror network. The operation is linked to an ongoing investigation into the infiltration of terrorists from Pakistan, with searches underway at at least ten locations in Jammu, including one in Bathindi.

The raids are being conducted in connection with case RC-04/2024/NIA/JMU, registered on October 24, 2024, based on intelligence inputs about active terrorists from Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) and JeM sneaking into Indian territory through the International Border (IB) and the Line of Control (LoC). Investigators have found that these infiltrations were facilitated by overground workers (OGWs) and other terror associates in villages across Jammu, who provided logistical support, including food, shelter, money, and safe passage.

Security agencies remain on high alert as the searches continue, with further details on the operation awaited.

He highlighted progress in infrastructure, energy, and governance while ensuring peace and stability
</excerpt>

Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha assured that his government remains committed to restoring Jammu and Kashmir’s statehood. Speaking at the inaugural session of the J-K Legislative Assembly’s Budget Session, he emphasized ongoing discussions with stakeholders to make this happen.

“One of the foremost aspirations of the Jammu and Kashmir people is the restoration of the full statehood. My government remains steadfast in its commitment to addressing this legitimate desire of the citizens of J-K,” he said. He acknowledged the emotional and political importance of statehood and stressed that the process must ensure peace, stability, and progress.

Commitment to Unity and Good Governance

Sinha highlighted Jammu and Kashmir’s rich cultural heritage and its long-standing tradition of harmony. He assured that the administration is working to preserve unity and diversity while maintaining peace.

He also stressed the government’s focus on transparency and accountability. “My government remains committed to transparent and accountable decision-making,” he said. The economy has seen growth in recent years, with an increase in the Gross State Domestic Product (GSDP), better infrastructure, and improved social conditions. However, challenges like regional disparities, unemployment, and sustainable development remain.

Major Infrastructure Push

The Lieutenant Governor praised recent infrastructure advancements. He highlighted the Sonmarg Tunnel’s inauguration by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on January 13. He also pointed out that two completed segments of the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway have significantly reduced travel time.

“My government remains committed to fast-tracking major connectivity projects,” he said. To ensure timely completion, the administration is streamlining land acquisitions, securing forest clearances, and addressing encroachments. Expressways, highways, and ring roads in Jammu and Srinagar will move forward at an accelerated pace.

Energy Sector Expansion

Sinha also emphasized efforts to strengthen Jammu and Kashmir’s energy sector. The government is seeking support from the central government to complete key hydroelectric projects.

“These projects will collectively add 3,014 Megawatts of capacity, significantly strengthening the region’s energy security and benefiting the people,” he stated.

This budget session marks the first under Chief Minister Omar Abdullah’s leadership.

</excerpt>

This enigmatic ‘Mysterious Illness’ disease that has already killed at least 17 people in the Rajouri district of Jammu and Kashmir is still a riddle for authorities. Union Minister Jitendra Singh recently provided an update regarding the investigation that is being conducted on the disease, stating that preliminary tests have already ruled out infections such as viruses and bacteria as possible causes.

Toxin Identified, Further Tests Underway

Speaking at the inauguration of a new bridge in Basantpur, Singh addressed the ongoing investigation and shared key findings. He revealed that tests conducted by a toxicology laboratory in Lucknow under the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) identified the presence of a toxin, which is now undergoing further analysis.

“The discussion has started, but the first test was conducted by a toxicology laboratory in Lucknow. The conclusion so far is that there is no infection, no virus, no bacteria – it was just a toxin. Now the toxin is being tested. There is a long series of toxins that are being tested, and if there is any mischief or foul play, we will know about it,” Singh said.

Further tests are being conducted by the authorities to identify the specific toxin and whether it was introduced intentionally.

17 Died from the Mysterious Illness

The mysterious disease that emerged in the first week of December 2024 has infected 38 and taken away 17 lives in Rajouri. As of now, health department officials have declared there is no present need to announce a public health emergency. However, with this statement from Singh, things became a bit more clear. What is still being investigated is what caused this mysterious illness.

Infection neither Viral nor Bacterial

Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah also commented on the issue. While visiting Badhal in Rajouri, Abdullah told citizens that authorities were doing their best to identify the cause of the illness. “Tests were done, and we concluded that there were no bacteria or viruses that caused those deaths,” Abdullah said. He added that all the deaths occurred within three families, though the precise cause remains unclear.

SIT to Be Formed Over Deaths

Taking the mystery of the death, Union Home Minister Amit Shah ordered an inter-ministerial team to be constituted led by MHA for further investigation of causes that led to such deaths. It will bring an end to all the confusion if it’s proven there’s foul play or any other factor involved.

An official stated that on Tuesday, a 25-year-old youth, Aijaz Ahmad, exhibited symptoms of the illness. He was initially treated at GMC Jammu before being shifted to PGI Chandigarh for advanced medical care.

On Wednesday, two additional cases were reported from the same area, with both patients now being shifted for further treatment.

In response to the alarming situation, the Rajouri district administration has officially declared Badhaal a containment zone, imposing strict restrictions on gatherings. The District Magistrate’s formal order also mandates designated officials to oversee the distribution of meals to families within the restricted area.

Meanwhile, Divisional Commissioner Jammu, Ramesh Kumar, visited the nearby Koteranka area to monitor the situation closely.
