David Corenswet Shines in James Gunn’s Superman Reboot

June 28, 2025, 2:53 pm

James Gunn’s new Superman film is set to hit theatres worldwide next month. This marks the third reboot of the iconic hero in 20 years, following Brandon Routh’s and Henry Cavill’s versions.

Fans React After Exclusive Preview

Last week, the studio screened the first 30 minutes of the film in Brazil and Manila. Director James Gunn and lead actor David Corenswet also attended the screenings.

Afterward, many fans shared their reactions online. One viewer posted, “No way I saw the first 30 minutes of Superman after feeling so hopeless the entire day. Needless to say it was DAMN BEAUTIFUL. Time absolutely flew by…”

Compared to Past Versions

Unlike Zack Snyder’s darker Man of Steel, Gunn’s version feels brighter and more hopeful. In fact, one review noted, “It’s very Silver-Age. It’s got a lot of those sci-fi tropes. It’s big in spectacle, drama, and laughs. Big in its heart. A very earnest film.”

Moreover, another viewer commented, “A friend saw @JamesGunn’s Superman today. He said it’s 180 degrees away from @ZackSnyder’s vision… But the most important thing was… he really, really liked it.”

A friend saw @JamesGunn's SUPERMAN today. He said it's 180 degrees away from @ZackSnyder's vision. He told me A LOT of things..probably too much. He said the trailers have been on point. But the most important thing was…he vomited, and had to be taken to ER for how bad it was.

Superman 2025 CinemaCon Footage Leaked; Gunn Teases with Krypto

April 4, 2025, 2:04 pm

Just when the audience at CinemaCon had thought they’d witnessed it all, director James Gunn ensured everyone was discussing Superman. The head of DC Studios just released a four-minute clip of his new Superman movie on the internet. The release comes just ahead of Marvel’s major Las Vegas presentation. “Check out this Sneak Peek of #Superman, flying into theaters July 11,” Gunn posted, letting fans know the footage is finally public.

An Injured Superman, a Devoted Krypto and a Secret-Filled Fortress

Following the initial airing on April 1 and all the hype around Superman’s devoted dog Krypto, we finally get to see the teaser in detail. It begins with an injured and battered Man of Steel crash-landing in a snowy, barren area close to the Fortress of Solitude. He’s bruised, hanging by a thread. You can watch his breath blowing out small puffs of snow as he lies there, dead. That’s when he releases a faint whistle, and Krypto, his sweet loyal dog, bursts in. He immediately senses something’s wrong. Superman’s not all right. So, he picks him up and hauls him into the Fortress, where Kryptonian robots stand by.

One of them, Robot 4, is voiced by Alan Tudyk. You’ll probably recognise the voice if you’ve seen Rogue One or I, Robot. The robots take one look at Superman and hit him with a strong blast of concentrated sunlight to speed up his healing. The treatment clearly hurts Corenswet’s Superman lets out a deep, painful scream as his broken bones and damaged organs begin to heal.

Fans React to Gunn’s Nostalgic and Emotional Take

“DC has never been more back, oh my god,” a fan commented. “Absolutely stunning! And what an inspiring song. Thank you, @JamesGunn, for bringing back a Superman we can truly believe in. Up, up, and away!” Another wrote, “This trailer has a 1970s retro vibe with a touch of Christopher Reeve’s Superman. The bright look adds to its nostalgic charm,” a third added. The teaser on X has garnered 21.3 million views already (at the time of writing).

James Gunn Reflects on Choosing Superman Over Suicide Squad

Before CinemaCon released the footage, James Gunn spoke about how close this Superman story is to his heart. He was offered Superman and The Suicide Squad back in 2018. He chose the latter. “It was an R-rated movie about a bunch of ragtag heroes,” Gunn said, according to Deadline. “That was the easy way.” But the idea of Superman never left him.

A Story of Kindness, Heart, and Classic Inspiration

“It stuck with me. How can you take a character seen as old-fashioned and make him feel real today? One day, it hit me—I wanted to tell a story that was utterly human and utterly fantastic,” he explained.

For Gunn, this is not merely a superhero movie. It’s about heart. About love. About kindness. In his own words: “This is a movie that celebrates kindness and human love. I want people to walk out feeling more connected to the person they came in with.” Gunn took inspiration from classic Max Fleischer cartoons, his own late dog, and his signature blend of sincerity and spectacle. “I want people to have that magical feeling when they come out of the movie and they love the person they came with a little more than when they went in,” he said.

Superman to Lead the New DC Universe Launch

The CinemaCon event also hosted Nicholas Hoult (Lex Luthor), David Corenswet (Superman), and Rachel Brosnahan (Lois Lane). The upcoming film is the launchpad for the new DC Universe, which kicks off with “Chapter One: Gods and Monsters.” With risky, lesser-known characters like Clayface, Swamp Thing, and Supergirl following, it’s clear DC is counting on Superman to set the tone and bring back fans in a big way.

Lex Luthor’s New Look: James Gunn Reveals Nicholas Hoult’s Character in ‘Superman’

February 24, 2025, 8:30 pm

James Gunn marked the 85th anniversary of Lex Luthor’s debut in the 1940s Action Comics by unveiling an exclusive behind-the-scenes image of Nicholas Hoult’s portrayal of the iconic supervillain.

Gunn’s upcoming film, Superman, is among the most highly anticipated superhero movies of the year. The film stars David Corenswet in the titular role, while Nicholas Hoult takes on the character of Lex Luthor, a role previously played by Jesse Eisenberg in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016).

Taking to Instagram, Gunn shared a black-and-white photo of Hoult in character, dressed in a shirt and tie. While posting the image, he wrote, “In celebration of the 85th anniversary of Lex Luthor, here’s an exclusive photo of @nicholashoult as Lex in our upcoming movie, @Superman.”

Recently, Gunn also released a teaser for the film, followed by a short video featuring additional footage, including a super-powered battle and fresh glimpses of Hoult’s Lex Luthor.

In this preview, Superman—the last son of Krypton—is seen rescuing the people of Metropolis while battling a massive, fire-breathing lizard. One moment shows the superhero shielding a young girl from a nearby explosion. The teaser opens with Superman, injured, calling out to his loyal companion Krypto for help. Scenes from what appears to be the Fortress of Solitude, his legendary home, are also included.

Hoult’s Lex Luthor is seen stepping out of a luxurious vehicle, adding to the intrigue surrounding his portrayal. The footage also showcases Superman soaring through the skies, maneuvering skillfully as he twists and weaves through jagged ice formations.

The film is set to hit theaters on July 11, 2025.

DC Studios To Release James Gunn’s ‘The Batman Part II’ in 2027

December 29, 2024, 5:45 pm

A day after it was officially announced that The Batman Part II had been delayed, James Gunn revealed the reason behind the decision, which has angered fans. The DC Studios co-chairman and co-CEO said the script for the sequel to the highly-acclaimed movie was yet to be completed, prompting the executives to push back the film by a year to 2027 from its initial release date.

“The only reason for the delay is there isn’t a full script,” wrote Gunn on his Threads account.

“[Director] Matt [Reeves] is committed to making the best film he possibly can, and no one can accurately guess exactly how long a script will take to write. Once there is a finished script, there is around two years for preproduction, shooting, and post-production on big films.”

Gunn further defended the long gap between the two movies by citing his own filmography and stating that big-budget superhero movies typically have a lengthy production and post-production schedule.

“To be fair, a 5-year gap or more is fairly common in sequels. 7 years between Alien and Aliens. 14 years between Incredibles. 7 years between the first two Terminators. 13 years between Avatars. 36 years between Top Guns. And, of course, 6 years between Guardians Vol. 2 and Vol. 3.”

The Batman Part II will now be premiering on October 1, 2027, with production on the movie slated to begin in the summer of next year. However, with the script yet to be finalized, it might be a race against time for Gunn and his team to get the production on schedule.

VFX-Heavy Movie

A Deadline report previously claimed that the second installment will be VFX-heavy, meaning a considerable amount of time will be spent during the post-production process. However, if the script is not perfected by Reeves, the release could be further delayed if reshoots are ordered, as has been the case with many recent DC offerings.

Warner Bros is expected to slot in Alejandro G. Iñárritu and Tom Cruise’s upcoming film in the vacant spot left by The Batman sequel. The unnamed movie will be released in IMAX on October 2, 2025.

As per Reeves, the work on the script for the second film in a planned trilogy has been “slow.”

“We’re finishing the script. We’re going to be shooting next year,” Reeves said in a recent Directors on Directors conversation with Variety.

Alongside Robert Pattinson, Colin Farrell’s Oswald “Oz” Cobb, aka The Penguin, will be featuring in the sequel, though there is no confirmation from the studio regarding Zoë Kravitz’s return as Catwoman.

New Superman Trailer Ignites Debate: Fans React To Fresh Vision And Snyder Legacy

December 20, 2024, 3:10 pm

The new Superman trailer has been creating ripples with its great photography, an inspirational soundtrack, and exceptional acting. It stars David Corenswet as the new Man of Steel, promising an amazing superhero adventure. However, it has also been causing quite a stir among Zack Snyder’s loyal fans, who are protesting in disgust. With Man of Steel, Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice, and the contentious Justice League, Snyder—one who is known to the world for his uniquely divisive take on the DC universe—left an indelible mark. While his movies split audiences, they fuelled perhaps the most dedicated fandom known to push for Snyder’s original edit of Justice League released in 2021.

With a new Superman film in the works, some fans think that this new direction under James Gunn‘s film makes it more alien to the grounded and complex portrayal that Snyder has. One fan described it as a “slap in the face” to Zack Snyder‘s legacy because of its more traditional approach. Others have agreed, saying that the new Superman goes against the deeper themes—that of identity and sacrifice—that Snyder’s version embodies. Online conversations are still dominated by statements like “Release the Snyder Cut” and “Zack Snyder is the blueprint.”

Despite this criticism, though, most fans welcome this clip and praise this change in the character. A section of the fans have retaliated against Snyder’s fans by saying that this trailer presents a more promising Superman than Snyder’s version. Praise for director James Gunn’s straightforward, raw approach to the cinematography has been abundant, with viewers excited about the film’s balance of nostalgia and grounded storytelling. For many, the trailer has evoked feelings of hope, and they eagerly anticipate the film’s release as a new era for Superman.

As early as his guest spot on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, James Gunn referred to the fact that this movie would go deeper into aspects of Superman’s biography never previously shown onscreen. Silver Age elements about Superman’s story—a side of the character that does not really appear in movie versions—are explicitly mentioned to be used by Gunn:.

In James Gunn’s Superman, a stellar supporting ensemble includes Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, and David Corenswet as Superman. Superdog Krypto To Make His First Live-Action Debut In James Gunn’s ‘Superman’

October 15, 2024, 11:33 pm

Director James Gunn announced on Tuesday that Krypto the Superdog will feature in his upcoming ‘Superman’ movie, coinciding with October’s Adopt a Shelter Dog month, according to Variety.

“Krypto arrives on screens in Superman this summer,” Gunn wrote. “Krypto was inspired by our dog Ozu, who we adopted shortly after I started writing Superman. Ozu, who came from a hoarding situation in a backyard with 60 other dogs & never knew human beings, was problematic to say the least,” Gunn said.

“He immediately came in and destroyed our home, our shoes, our furniture – he even ate my laptop. It took a long time before he would even let us touch him. I remember thinking, ‘Gosh, how difficult would life be if Ozu had superpowers?’ – and thus Krypto came into the script & changed the shape of the story as Ozu was changing my life. What better time to debut the not-so-good-good-boy Krypto than #AdoptAShelterDog month. Btw, Ozu today, is, fairly often, a very good boy.”

Krypto, the superpowered dog from Superman’s home planet Krypton, has appeared in numerous animated DC films but has yet to make an appearance in a live-action movie. He is set to make his live-action debut alongside David Corenswet’s Superman in Gunn’s film next summer, before joining Milly Alcock’s Kara Zor-El in “Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow,” directed by Craig Gillespie, which is scheduled for release in June 2026.

Chris Pratt Teases DCU Debut: “More Than Happy” To Dive In

June 30, 2024, 7:51 pm

Following his recent visit to the set of ‘Superman: Legacy’ to meet with director James Gunn, actor Chris Pratt mentioned that “there’s always a chance” he could join the DCU, though he remained mum on which character he’d like to portray, according to Deadline.

“I just have to leave that to the fans and people like James to decide,” Pratt shared in an interview. “I’m not exactly sure. I’m truly not sure,” he added.

When directly asked if he would join the competing franchise, Pratt was unequivocal, stating, “Yes, of course.”

“If it could fit into my schedule and it made sense, I would love it,” he elaborated. “Of course, I love playing Star-Lord, and hopefully there’s a chance that can come back. I just feel so blessed to be able to do any of it, to be considered for any of it. If it’s right and the fans would love it, I’d be more than happy to do it.”

These remarks came after Gunn posted a photo of Pratt on the ‘Superman: Legacy‘ set earlier this month, captioning it, “Always nice to have friends visiting set.”

Pratt has previously starred in the MCU as Peter Quill (aka Star-Lord) in Gunn’s ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ (2014), and they reunited for the sequels in 2017 and 2023, as well as for ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ (2018) and ‘Endgame’ (2019).

Since taking the helm at DC Studios alongside Peter Safran in 2022, Gunn has been diligently working on ‘Superman: Legacy’, set to kick off a new DC Multiverse. The cast includes David Corenswet as Superman, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, and Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen.

After expressing his openness to casting MCU actors in his future DCU projects, Gunn noted that a crossover between the two comic book universes is “more likely now that I’m in charge,” but added, “That’s many years away, though. I think we have to establish what we’re doing at DC first. I would be lying to say that we haven’t discussed it. But all discussions have been very, very light and fun,” Deadline reported.

James Gunn drops bombshell tease for ‘Peacemaker’ Season 2 with Epic Helmet Pic!

April 15, 2024, 2:53 pm

‘Peacemaker’ has commenced production on a new season, following the conclusion of its first one more than two years ago.

On Saturday, James Gunn, co-chairman and co-CEO of DC Studios, posted a selfie to Instagram featuring Peacemaker’s recognizable headpiece. Gunn wrote, “Cloning this picture” “Day 1 S2,” with the mermaid emoji paying homage to the show’s audience. Vigilante (Freddie Stroma) revealed in the first season that he preferred the mermaid emoji, which can represent a variety of emotions from happiness to melancholy.

Gunn was the writer and director of the first season of the superhero series “Peacemaker” on Max, which starred the violently sensitive character Peacemaker played by John Cena. Along with these actors from the first season were Robert Patrick as White Dragon, the father of Peacemaker, Danielle Brooks, Chukwudi Iwuji, Jennifer Holland, and Steve Agee. Gunn talked about his ultimate goal for the character and his growth in an interview with Variety after the Season 1 finale.

“The most important thing for me in the first season was who Peacemaker was and where was he going,” he stated. “What was his personal journey? The Butterflies and the plot and all of that is secondary to who he was as a character and what his changes were, as well as the other characters and where they began and where they end because they all have little changes for themselves — with the exception of Vigilante, who’s sort of a straight line the whole time. So I know where Peacemaker starts and where he ends, but I’m playing with other ideas around that and how that’s gonna play out.”
