Key Arrests in Jalandhar: Police Bust Drug and Arms Smuggling Racket Linked to Amritpal Singh

In a breakthrough, the Jalandhar Commissionerate Police, under the leadership of Commissioner of Police Swapan Sharma, arrested four individuals on Sunday, including a key aide of Amritpal Singh, for their involvement in illegal arms smuggling, drug trafficking, extortion, and other criminal activities.

Criminal Network Disrupted

Commissioner Sharma revealed that this racket had been operational within the state and was planning significant actions to disrupt law and order. The arrested individuals have been identified as:

Lakhwinder Singh from Haibowal village, Garhshankar Police Station, Hoshiarpur
Gurbhej Singh from Gudara village, Bajakhana Police Station, Ferozepur
Satinder Singh (alias Kala) from Palahi village, Mehtiana Police Station, Hoshiarpur
Bharat (alias Bhau) from Barar Mohalla, Patti, Tarn Taran

Sharma explained that Harshdeep Singh, who had been previously arrested, was closely associated with Lakhwinder Singh, a known drug dealer with multiple criminal cases. Lakhwinder had been supplying drugs to Harshdeep, who was also involved in trading illegal arms sourced from Gurbhej Singh, a close associate of Amritpal Singh from Waris Punjab De.

Notably, Gurbhej Singh had been incarcerated in Kapurthala Jail for the Amritpal case and the Ajnala police station attack, where he met Lakhwinder Singh (alias Lakhi), who was serving time for a murder case. The two subsequently began smuggling arms, ammunition, and drugs across the state.

Evidence and Ongoing Investigation

Phone records and messages uncovered from their devices revealed plans to target rivals. An FIR (No. 253 dated 19-10-2024) has been registered at New Baradari Police Station, Jalandhar, under sections 25, 54, and 59 of the Arms Act and sections 21, 61, and 85 of the NDPS Act. Authorities recovered ten cartridges of 12-bore, eight cartridges of 315-bore, and 100 grams of heroin from the accused. Further investigation into the case is ongoing.

3 dead, several injured as Police bus collides with tractor

A Punjab Armed Police bus and a tractor collided at Mukeria in the Hoshiarpur district of Punjab, resulting in three fatalities and multiple injuries, including a female police officer, according to police. The incident occurred at approximately six in the morning, according to Mukeria Police Station Chief Joginder Singh. The Punjab Armed Police personnel were being transported by bus from Jalandhar at approximately six in the morning. On the side of the road, it struck a trailer.

The driver, a woman constable, and another policeman have lost their lives. 3 to 4 other policemen are injured. A bus full of 15-20 policemen was going from Jalandhar PAP centre to Gurdaspur, Joginder Singh said.

DSP found dead along canal in Jalandhar, probe underway

Punjab: Over 15,000 people attend ‘CM di Yogshala’ event in Jalandhar

A massive yoga session that was held in Jalandhar on Tuesday and attended by more than 15,000 people was organised by the Punjab government.The unique yoga class was led by Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann and was part of the ‘CM di Yogshala’ programme, which was conducted throughout the state. Balbeer Singh Sidhu, the health minister, claims that more than 15,000 individuals visited the “Yogashala.” AAP politician Raghav Chadha was spotted practising yoga with Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, along with Cabinet Minister Brahm Shankar Jimpa, Health Minister Balbeer Singh Sidhu, and other officials.

During the event, Chief Minister Bhagwant Maan said that Yoga will be promoted in Punjab, and for that the Punjab Government has started efforts.
If at any place in Punjab, 25 or more people want to gather and perform Yoga, then the government will provide them with a government Yoga teacher.

Former Punjab CM Channi summoned by Vigilance Bureau for disproportionate assets case

According to official sources, the Punjab Vigilance Bureau has summoned former Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi to appear for questioning on Wednesday in an alleged disproportionate assets case.

According to them, the Congress leader has been summoned to the bureau’s office in Mohali. This is the first time Channi has been called in for questioning in the case.

The Vigilance Bureau initially summoned Channi on Wednesday, but changed the date after the Congress leader requested time. Channi stated, “I will appear before the Vigilance Bureau on 20 April.”

Previously, on 7 March, the Vigilance Bureau issued a lookout circular against Channi, preventing him from flying abroad. Channi announced in a video message two days later that he was cancelling his trip to the United States. The Enforcement Directorate arrested Channi’s nephew Bhupinder Singh, alias Honey, in February last year in an alleged illegal sand mining case. The ED had seized nearly Rs 10 crore in addition to a number of valuables from Honey’s premises. It has been claimed that Honey amassed his fortune by assisting mining contractors and through official transfers and postings. ED also summoned Channi in April of last year to record his statement. Channi had previously described his nephew’s arrest and summons as a vendetta and political witch hunt.

Channi left for the United States and Canada shortly after the Congress’ humiliating defeat in last year’s Assembly elections, in which he was the party’s CM face, and returned nearly seven months later in December. Channi had previously run unsuccessfully for the Chamkaur Sahib and Bhadaur Assembly seats.

On Tuesday, Channi claimed that the Vigilance Bureau summons were a “political witch hunt” and that he was summoned because of political vendetta. “The AAP government is doing this to defame the established leadership of the Congress party,” Channi explained.

He also questioned the VB summon’s timing. “This was done on purpose ahead of the Jalandhar Lok Sabha bypoll,” he added.

In the aftermath of a “humiliating defeat” in the Jalandhar Lok Sabha bypoll, state Congress chief Amrinder Singh Raja Warring accused the AAP government of “choosing to resort to its last weapon, the vigilance bureau.”

“Faced with a certain and humiliating defeat in the Jalandhar bypoll, the AAP resorts to its last weapon, the vigilance bureau.” “Charanjit Channi has faced far more serious threats than an investigation, and I am confident he will emerge stronger,” Warring wrote in a tweet.

Warring later claimed in a statement that the AAP government is “anti-Dalit” and has plan to target and harass dalit leaders. The election for the Jalandhar parliamentary seat will be held on 10 May with the results announced on 13 May. The byelection was called after Congress MP Santokh Singh Chaudhary’s death in January at the age of 76. He died of a cardiac arrest while participating in the party’s Bharat Jodo Yatra in Jalandhar’s Phillaur.

Sacrilege incident at Gurdwara Sahib accused held

In a sacrilege incident at Gurdwara Sahib of Mansoorpur village in Punjab Jalandhar Rural police arrested the accused on Monday.

Taking to Twitter Jalandhar Rural police tweeted, “Today (5/12/2022), the accused related to the sacrilege incident at the Gurdwara Sahib of village Mansoorpur, PS Goraya District Jalandhar (Rural) has been arrested. The case has been registered and Investigation is ongoing, the situation is under control.”

Meanwhile, calling the situation “worrisome” BJP leader Manjinder Singh Sirsa tweeted and slammed the Aam Aadmi Party government after the incident.

Firing a fresh salvo Sirsa said, the Aam Aadmi Party government in the state for “deliberately giving signals to anti-social elements to indulge in communal acts and destroy peace”.

Moreover, the BJP leader also shared the visuals of inside the gurdwara where the incident took place.

Young boy’s body was discovered in an abandoned suitcase outside Jalandhar City Station

On Tuesday morning, the body of a young man was discovered in a suitcase outside Jalandhar City railway station.

The body was discovered around 7 a.m., and local residents alerted police.

“We arrived at the scene as soon as we received information about the body of a youngster being found in a red suitcase near the bushes just outside Jalandhar city railway station,” said Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Om Prakash of the Government Railway Police (GRP).

“We are scanning the CCTV footage in which a man in his mid-30s was seen dropping the suitcase and heading towards the ticket counter. The body was taken for post-mortem, while efforts are on to arrest the accused,” he said.

Day after a family was burned alive in Jalandhar, the accused was discovered hanging from a tree

A day after a 30-year-old man allegedly killed his wife, in-laws, and two stepchildren after setting them on fire in the Mehatpur area of Jalandhar, on Wednesday morning, his body was discovered hanging from a tree on the banks of the Sutlej River in Ludhiana’s Khurshedpur village.

Kuldeep Singh, a resident of Khurshedpur village, is accused of committing the murders with the assistance of his friends Kulwinder Singh and Malkiat Singh. Kulwinder Singh has been arrested, according to Superintendent of Police (Investigation) Sarabjit Singh Bahia, while Malkiat Singh is on the run.

According to Mehatpur station house officer (SHO) Balraj Singh, the Ludhiana rural police have opened an inquest under Section 174 of the Code of Criminal Procedure. The accused is thought to have committed suicide.

Kuldeep, who was addicted to drugs, entered his in-laws’ house on October 18, while the family was asleep, and set them on fire after dousing them in petrol. He fled after locking the door from the outside. The victims were identified as Paramjit Kaur, 28, her two children, ages eight and five, her father, Surjan Singh, 50, and her mother, Jogindero Bai, 49. While Jogindero and her eight-year-old granddaughter died on the scene, the other three victims were taken to Nakodar Civil Hospital and then to Jalandhar Civil Hospital. According to police, all three died as a result of their injuries.

On the basis of the statement of Lakhwinder Singh, Surjan Singh’s younger brother, a case has been registered against the accused at the Mehatpur police station under Sections 302 (murder), 307 (attempt to murder), 120-B (criminal conspiracy), and other relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code.

According to the FIR, the accused married Paramjit a year ago. Their marriage was their second. A month after her marriage, Paramjit returned to her parents’ home, claiming torture. The village panchayat had also attempted, but failed, to resolve the dispute. However, no police report was filed. Kuldeep had tried to persuade Paramjit to return home, but she refused. According to the FIR, Kuldeep even threatened to kill the family.

Five family members along with three kids succumb to a road accident in Ludhiana

A car carrying five members of a family, including three kids, was quashed on the Ludhiana-Chandigarh highway near Veer Palace on Monday night.

The victims were identified as Rajesh Kumar aged 35, of New Madhopuri, his sister-in-law (wife’s sister) Sanjana, 30, and three children – Mahi, 5; Jasmin, 5; and Khushi, 3.

Kumar’s wife Priya, 32, has been admitted to Christian Medical College and Hospital in critical condition.

The family was driving from Chandigarh to Ludhiana when the driver lost control of the speeding car around 2.30 a.m. The car collided with a wall before flipping over.

The force of the fatal crash killed three of the travellers on the spot, while another two died in the hospital from their injuries.

Meanwhile, five members of a Ludhiana-based family, including three women and two infants, were killed and two others were injured when their car collided with a tanker on the Jalandhar-Amritsar national highway in Kapurthala district on June 19. The family was on their way back from Amritsar after paying their respects at the Golden Temple.

Jalandhar: Punjab CM Bhagwant Mann inaugurates ‘Khedan Watan Punjab Dian’ event

Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann on Monday inaugurated a sporting event ‘Khedan Watan Punjab Dian’ at Guru Gobind Singh stadium in Jalandhar.

Talking about the event a player in the tournament said, “I love playing sports, I have come here to participate. Chief Minister also played with us, he talked about sportsmanship and motivated us to play for Punjab and for the country.”

“It was great to have Chief Minister playing with us, it was a very good experience,” another participant said.

However, block-level tournaments will be held from 1 September to September 7 and district-level tournaments will be also held from 12 September to 22 September. From 10 October to 21 October, the final state-level tournaments will be organized.
