</excerpt>

In a development that redrew the diplomatic map of South Asia, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar directly spoke with the Taliban’s acting Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi on Thursday. This telephone conversation is the first ministerial-level outreach by India to the Taliban administration in Afghanistan and signals the beginning of a new chapter in bilateral relations.

India has not formally recognized the Taliban government, but this historic dialogue reflects a changing pragmatic approach towards regional diplomacy.

First Ministerial-Level Talks with Taliban

Taking to the social media platform X, Dr Jaishankar termed the discussion fruitful and reaffirmed India’s relations with the Afghan people. “Good conversation with Acting Afghan Foreign Minister Mawlawi Amir Khan Muttaqi this evening. Deeply appreciate his condemnation of the Pahalgam terrorist attack,” he posted. He underscored India’s commitment, adding, “Reaffirmed our traditional friendship with the Afghan people and continued support for their development needs. Discussed ways and means of taking cooperation forward.

Good conversation with Acting Afghan Foreign Minister Mawlawi Amir Khan Muttaqi this evening.

Deeply appreciate his condemnation of the Pahalgam terrorist attack.

Welcomed his firm rejection of recent attempts to create distrust between India and Afghanistan through false and…

— Dr. S. Jaishankar (@DrSJaishankar) May 15, 2025

This call comes in the wake of the Taliban regime’s severe condemnation of the recent Pahalgam terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir that left 26 innocent tourists lives. This public denunciation by the Taliban has created space for diplomatic dialogue between the two countries.

A Strong Message to Pakistan

Dr Jaishankar used the opportunity to counter Pakistani disinformation campaigns aimed at maligning India-Afghanistan ties. He welcomed Mr Muttaqi’s stance on this, writing, “Firm rejection of recent attempts to create distrust between India and Afghanistan through false and baseless reports” circulated by Pakistan-based media.

— Hafiz Zia Ahmad (@HafizZiaAhmad) May 15, 2025

This reaction is a diplomatic counter-narrative to Pakistan’s effort to associate the Taliban with disturbances in Jammu and Kashmir, adding more strength to India’s stance on local terrorism and cross-border hostility.

Chabahar Port and Trade Routes in Focus

During the talk, Mr Muttaqi had asked for additional medical visas for Afghan citizens and stressed bilateral trade and consular assistance. He had also broached the issue of Afghan detainees lodged in Indian prisons and talked about the development of the Iranian port Chabahar.

The importance of Chabahar Port is further understood amidst India-Pakistan trade halt. Since Afghanistan is a landlocked country, it has limited access to India with Pakistan blocking the land links. Therefore, the Chabahar Port is still an important strategic and commercial connection between the two countries.

Strengthening Diplomatic Engagements

India has maintained regular contact with the Taliban through senior diplomatic channels. Recent visits by Indian diplomats, including Anand Prakash’s meeting with Mr Muttaqi in Kabul after the Pahalgam attack, and Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri’s high-level meeting in Dubai earlier this year, have laid the foundation for formal engagements.

Mr JP Singh also traveled to Kabul twice last year, sitting down with senior Taliban ministers. These regular efforts reflect that India is willing to keep lines of communication open based on humanitarian, development, and regional security interests.

Confidence-Building Measures Underway

India has also allowed the Taliban to progressively establish Afghan missions in New Delhi, Mumbai, and Hyderabad. These measures provide Afghan citizens within India with access to consular services such as business, education, and medical care.

On the humanitarian side, India has always been giving assistance, such as 50,000 metric tons of wheat, 300 tons of medication, and millions of doses of vaccines. These actions once again reiterate India’s long-standing commitment to the people of Afghanistan regardless of political acceptance.

This ministerial-level appeal not only highlights India’s strategic adjustment but also indicates its effort to reconcile humanitarian commitment with regional security. Though outright recognition of the Taliban regime is off the cards for the time being, the path of India-Afghanistan relations seems to be directed toward tentative cooperation.

</excerpt>

Amid rising tensions with Pakistan, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar on Thursday stated that India has no desire to escalate the current situation. However, he issued a stern warning that any military attack from Pakistan would trigger a “very, very firm response”.

India Conducted Strikes After Pahalgam Terror Attack

During his meeting with Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi, Jaishankar said India’s military response was a direct consequence of the “particularly barbaric” terrorist attack in Pahalgam on April 22, which claimed the lives of 26 Indian nationals.

“This attack compelled us to respond on May 7 by striking at cross-border terrorist infrastructure. Our response was targeted and measured,” Jaishankar said in his televised opening remarks.

India Carries Out ‘Operation Sindoor’

India launched a military operation, codenamed Operation Sindoor, in the early hours of May 7. The operation targeted terror camps linked to Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) and Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) at nine locations across Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir, including in Punjab province. This marked the first time since the 1971 war that Indian forces targeted Pakistan’s most populous region.

Jaishankar: “No Intention to Escalate”

While reaffirming India’s position, Jaishankar said: “It is not our intention to escalate this situation. However, if there are military attacks on us, there should be no doubt that it will be met with a very, very firm response.”

Pakistan Vows to Respond

In response to India’s military strikes, the Pakistani military claimed that 26 people were killed and 46 others injured. The Pakistan government stated it would respond “at a time, place, and manner of its choosing”.

Iran’s Diplomatic Role and Joint Commission Talks

Before arriving in India, Araghchi made an unscheduled visit to Pakistan for high-level meetings. He later returned to Tehran before continuing to India, where he co-chaired a scheduled meeting of the India-Iran Joint Commission focused on trade and economic cooperation.

Following the Pahalgam attack, Araghchi had offered to mediate between India and Pakistan, aiming to reduce tensions between the two nuclear-armed neighbours.

India-Iran Ties Mark 75 Years

During the bilateral meeting, Jaishankar highlighted the broader cooperation between India and Iran, stating that “India-Iran cooperation has progressed in many aspects” and that both nations were committed to addressing challenges together.

He added that Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian had met in Russia in October 2024 and later spoke over the phone on April 26 to discuss further developments in the relationship.

Marking the 75th anniversary of diplomatic ties, Jaishankar said: “It is a reminder of the closeness of our collaboration and the deep friendship between us. I am sure that we will mark the anniversary appropriately.”

</excerpt>

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar on Friday voiced serious concerns about the increasing unpredictability in global political and economic affairs. Speaking at the India-Italy Business, Science and Technology Forum, he warned against the growing trend of economic activities being used as tools of geopolitical influence and stressed the importance of diversifying global partnerships.

Joined by Italian Deputy Prime Minister Antonio Tajani at the event, Jaishankar highlighted India’s active efforts to align with like-minded countries to build reliable and resilient economic alliances that serve both strategic and developmental objectives.

Supply chains fragile, manufacturing over-concentrated

“We meet today in a familiar global political and economic order, but one that is transforming, becoming more complex and unpredictable,” Jaishankar remarked. He emphasized the fragility of global supply chains and increasing disruptions in maritime shipping, especially in the wake of ongoing conflicts in Europe, the Middle East, and Asia.

“Even as we recover from the pandemic, multiple conflicts in Europe, Middle East and Asia, we must recognise that our supply chains are more fragile and our maritime shipping more disrupted,” he added.

The minister expressed concern over the “over-concentration of manufacturing” and the use of market dominance as a geopolitical tool. “Geopolitical competition has sharpened as market shares are leveraged and economic activities weaponised,” he said.

Digital shifts, trade barriers shaping new challenges

Jaishankar also underlined the challenges posed by rapid digitalisation and technological advancements, which are compounded by increasing trade barriers and export controls. These developments, he said, are making it harder for industries and governments to adapt.

“Countries across the world are understandably de-risking by building strong political and economic partnerships, by diversifying their manufacturing and trade partners, and by investing in innovation and research,” Jaishankar stated.

India strengthening global ties with trusted partners

Highlighting India’s proactive global outreach, the minister said the country has been actively building robust and trusted partnerships, especially with nations that share similar goals. “We are both witnessing these trends at home,” he noted.

He placed Italy high on India’s list of preferred partners. “For us, Italy ranks high in that list. In many sectors, there is a natural complementarity that we need to exploit,” Jaishankar said. “Whether it is energy or transport, food processing or light engineering, you have the technologies and best practices that make such collaboration fruitful.”

IMEEC corridor to redefine global economic connectivity

Jaishankar also spotlighted the proposed India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEEC), calling it a transformative global initiative. “The landmark initiative will create a truly new global axis for economies, energy resources and communications,” he said.

The IMEEC was initially conceptualised during the G20 Summit held in Delhi in 2023. Since then, it has evolved into a visionary plan that envisions a vast network of roads, railways, and shipping routes. Specifically, it aims to link India, Saudi Arabia, Europe, and the United States. Ultimately, the corridor seeks to enhance regional integration across Asia, the Middle East, and the West, thereby fostering deeper economic and strategic cooperation among participating nations.

Jaishankar Calls Out Western Double Standards in the Global Order

<excerpt> Jaishankar challenges the West’s double standards on global order, citing Kashmir, Taliban, and political interference as key examples.
</excerpt>

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar recently launched a scathing criticism of the Western world’s handling of the global order, accusing it of contradictions and self-serving stories. In his address at the Raisina Dialogue and in an interview with the Financial Times, he questioned the hyped virtues of the post-1945 world order, which he referred to as “a product of its times.” His comments have raised controversy among champions of the current global power structure, especially in Europe.

Challenging the ‘Rules-Based Order’

Jaishankar’s remarks were in the context of the current debate surrounding Russia’s attack on Ukraine. Former Swedish Prime Minister Carl Bildt contended that the need to stand by Ukraine was crucial because “Ukraine is about international law, not just European values—respecting sovereignty and territorial integrity.” Jaishankar, however, rebutted that such normative stands become untenable unless there is consistency.

“Where these normative postures go wrong is that without consistency, they become unsustainable,” Jaishankar said, adding that the Western countries only apply these regulations selectively, that too in their own interest.

Emphasizing Western Double Standards

Jaishankar cited historical instances of Western duplicity, especially referring to Kashmir. “We all talk about sovereignty and territorial integrity. It’s an important principle, a foundation of international norms. Since the Second World War, the longest continuing illegal occupation of a territory by another nation refers to India, what we experienced in Kashmir,” he declared.

He pointed out how, when India went to the United Nations about Pakistan’s invasion, it was turned into a ‘dispute’ and not an aggression. “The aggressor and the victim were equated. Who were the guilty? UK, Canada, Belgium, Australia, USA. So, forgive me, I have question marks on that one.”

Unmasking the West’s Changing Position on Taliban

Jaishankar also doubted the Western way of dealing with the Taliban. “The same Taliban which was an outlier, was embraced in the Doha process, embraced in Oslo… at that time people were alright with it. Today again we are saying, Taliban is doing all these not so good things… You had a British general referring to the Taliban once as ‘country boys with their own honour code’.

He highlighted how Western countries conveniently change their position according to geopolitical expediency. “When it is convenient for you to negotiate with the Taliban, they are fine. When it is not convenient, they are not fine.”

Call for a Fair and Strong Global Order

Jaishankar called for reforms in international governance, asserting that a really robust global order has to be equitable. “We need a strong UN, but a strong UN has to be a fair UN. A strong global order has to have some minimum consistency of standards,” he said.

He also highlighted the selective outrage in the West against military coups. “We have military coups to our east in Myanmar. They are no-no. We have them even more regularly to the west. You know where? They seem to be okay.”

India’s Role in a Multipolar World

Referring to India’s role in the world order, Jaishankar set out four defining dimensions:

Member of the Global South – India’s role is defined by its colonial past. Democracy and Market Economy – Based on indigenous roots, India’s democratic framework remains strong. Strategic Dexterity – India has managed to survive in a world that has not always been friendly to it, cultivating long-term strategic acumen. Advocate for Multipolarity – Being the fifth-largest economy and the largest population, India wants a multipolar world where it is a major power.

Jaishankar’s observations reflect India’s confident approach in international diplomacy, countering Western duplicity in promoting a better-balanced global order. His criticism at Raisina Dialogue is a cry for more honesty and equity in international governance.

Jaishankar stressed that true globalization is not about a single narrative but about embracing diversity.
</excerpt>

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar stated that a country cannot truly be global until it remains connected to its roots. Speaking at the lead-up event for the World Audio Visual and Entertainment Summit (WAVES) 2025 in Mumbai, he said globalization should reflect the “enormous diversity” of people worldwide.

“The world is already witnessing economic and political rebalancing, and this shift is now extending to technology and culture as well,” Jaishankar said. “Real globalization is not about a single truth; it’s about embracing the diversity of our planet. We are really never global until we are truly local.”

Mumbai as a Symbol of Global-Local Balance

Jaishankar emphasized that Mumbai is the perfect venue for WAVES 2025 as it represents the essence of cultural and economic integration.

“It is appropriate that WAVES 2025 takes place in Mumbai, a city whose identity captures the spirit of this endeavor,” he added.

Diplomats’ Role in Strengthening Global Ties

He encouraged ambassadors and diplomats present at the event to foster stronger connections between their home countries and India’s industry.

“So today, I urge all ambassadors and diplomats to introduce their respective governments, industries, and talent to this shared enterprise. Ambassadors play a key role in influencing their home nations, and their involvement will be crucial for the summit’s success,” he stated.

WAVES 2025: A Convergence of Industries

In a post on X, Jaishankar highlighted WAVES 2025 as a fusion of various industries, including cinema, digital media, content creation, IT, and India’s global capability centers.

“WAVES 2025 represents the coming together of cinema, the digital world, content revolution, IT industry, and India’s global capability centers. In many ways, it captures real globalization and the enormous diversity of our planet,” he posted.

However, he emphasised that a complete resolution remains pending, referring to Pakistan-occupied Kashmir as “stolen.” He asserted, “When that’s done, I assure you, Kashmir solved.”

He acknowledged the reality of economic multipolarity but underscored the dollar’s central role in global financial stability. He also noted that BRICS nations have differing views on the matter, with India prioritising its cooperation with the US.

However, he stressed the importance of mutual respect in diplomacy. “We want a relationship where our interests are respected, sensitivities are recognised, and it works for both of us,” he said, reaffirming India’s commitment to securing its strategic interests while maintaining stability.

He also confirmed ongoing trade negotiations, with Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal currently in Washington for discussions on a potential bilateral trade pact.

He emphasizes the significance of Quad engagement. Jaishankar contrasts Trump’s approach to NATO and highlights his unpredictability in foreign relations.
</excerpt>

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar has said US President Donald Trump will introduce meaningful changes in the international order within the next couple of years. Addressing an ORF (Observer Research Foundation) discussion, Jaishankar forecasted, “you are going to get policies which will reshape the international order as we have got used to.” He continued, “I’m not saying it’s good or bad.” I’m just guessing what’s going to happen and something big I believe is about to hit us.

Trump, whose unconventional political tactics have become legendary, has been even more extreme in his second term, threatening military assaults on allies, embracing expansionist policies similar to China and Russia, and supporting plans that some regard as ethnic cleansing positions that would have been unimaginable a few years ago.

Speaking of India’s role, Jaishankar referred to the Quad members’ foreign ministers’ meeting—the first multilateral meeting under Trump’s presidency. He said he did not foresee the sort of disruption in the Quad that has marked NATO during Trump’s tenure. Jaishankar noted, “What’s nice about the Quad? It has no overheads…Everyone comes, pays their bills, it’s fair,” drawing a comparison with the complicated structure of NATO.

Jaishankar also pointed to Trump’s NATO policy, citing his previous comments on leaving European allies exposed to Russian aggression, saying Trump had indicated he would tell Russia “to do whatever the hell they want” if NATO allies fail to fall in line with his requirements. He stressed that Trump’s engagement with the Quad was a clear, deliberate departure, going on to say, “it’s very interesting that the first foreign policy engagement of this administration, consciously, was the Quad.

This is an indication of a move towards a new world order dominated by the US, with policies that move away from the conventional alliances and expectations.

Jaishankar responds to the US deportation controversy, assures safety for returning migrants, and explains policy.
</excerpt>

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar spoke on the controversy surrounding the deportation of 104 Indian nationals from the United States. He clarifies the deportation process and assures the safety of those being sent back. Speaking in the Rajya Sabha on Thursday, Jaishankar explained that deportations of illegal migrants have been an ongoing practice for years and were not a new initiative.

Deportation Process and ICE’s Standard Procedure

Jaishankar clarified that deportations from the United States are carried out by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). He further explained that the deportation policy followed by ICE includes an SOP which has been operational since 2012. According to Jaishankar, deportees will be restrained as adopted by the policy while in transport, but he went ahead to clarify that women and children would not be restrained during the deportation process.

USBP and partners successfully returned illegal aliens to India, marking the farthest deportation flight yet using military transport. This mission underscores our commitment to enforcing immigration laws and ensuring swift removals.

If you cross illegally, you will be removed. pic.twitter.com/WW4OWYzWOf

— Chief Michael W. Banks (@USBPChief) February 5, 2025

“The deportation by the US are organized and executed by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) authority. The SOP of deportation by aircraft used by ICE which is effective from 2012 provides for the use of restraint. We have been informed by ICE that women and children are not restrained,” Jaishankar added.

Despite this explanation, the deportation of 104 Indian nationals aboard a US military aircraft sparked outrage in India. A video shared on social media showed the deportees being handcuffed and shackled as they boarded a C-17 military transport aircraft. The video, posted by US Border Patrol Chief Michael W Banks, was accompanied by a statement detailing the mission and reiterating the US’s commitment to enforcing immigration laws.

The stark message came in the video, “If you cross illegally, you will be removed.” The detained migrants were seen boarding the aircraft in the footage, which had dramatic music, heightening the gravity of deportation. The restrained movement of deportees as they shuffled onto the plane created an image more befitting prisoners of war than people returning home.

Trafficking and Exploitation Horror Stories

The 104 deportees, who arrived in Amritsar, Punjab, described their perilous journeys to the United States as fraught with dangerous paths, exploitation by traffickers, and extreme hardship.

Jaspal Singh, 36 years old, hails from Gurdaspur, Punjab. He revealed that he paid an agent Rs 30 lakh promising him that the route would be legal, but he ended up taking the “donkey route,” the treacherous illegal route taken through South America often used by human traffickers.

Harwinder Singh, from Hoshiarpur, Punjab, paid Rs 42 lakh for passage. He said he had to travel through Qatar, Brazil, Peru, Colombia, Panama, Nicaragua, and Mexico. “We walked for days, crossed mountains, and nearly drowned. I saw one man die in the Panama jungle,” Singh recalled, providing a stark account of the dangers involved.

Political Outrage Over Treatment of Deportees

The deportation of 104 Indian nationals, particularly shackling, caused a political commotion in India. Opposition leaders, such as Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, along with Samajwadi Party’s Akhilesh Yadav, strongly protested against the deportees’ treatment. The opposition staged outside Parliament demonstrations, carrying placards that claimed “Humans, Not Prisoners” while putting on symbolic handcuffs.

Congress MP Shashi Tharoor expressed his understanding of the US’s right to deport illegal migrants but criticized the method of deportation. “If you’re in the US illegally, they have the right to deport you. And if your Indian identity is confirmed, India must accept you. However, it was quite unnecessary to transport them in a military plane and shackles,” Tharoor said.

Priyanka Gandhi Vadra questioned why India did not do the same for repatriating the deportees. “Could not we have flown our aircraft back to take them? Is this the way to treat humans? Chained and handcuffed like a criminal? The Prime Minister must explain,” she said while voicing concern over inhuman treatment.

jaishankar’s Reassurance Regarding Safety

Jaishankar, in his address, reiterated India’s position on the deportation of its nationals. He emphasized that it is the responsibility of all countries to take back their citizens if they are found to be living illegally abroad. “All countries must take back their nationals if they are found to be living illegally abroad,” Jaishankar affirmed.

Moreover, the Minister for External Affairs said that India would engage with the US government so that deportees were treated as human beings and not mishandled at the time of deportation. “We are engaging the US government to ensure the returning deportees are not mistreated in any manner,” he assured.

Jaishankar met PM Modi amid growing outrage over the deportation of 104 illegal Indian immigrants from the U.S.
</excerpt>

Parliament in Turmoil

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar met Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday. This meeting took place as outrage grew over the deportation of 104 Indians who had entered the U.S. illegally. The minister is set to address Parliament on the issue. Consequently, both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha adjourned shortly after starting. The Opposition demanded a debate on the “deeply distressing and humiliating” deportation process.

U.S. Military Aircraft Lands in India

A U.S. military aircraft landed in Amritsar on Wednesday. It carried 104 illegal Indian immigrants. This marks the first large-scale deportation of Indians under Donald Trump’s administration. The U.S. conducted this operation as part of its crackdown on illegal immigration.

Breakdown of Deportees

Officials reported the origin of the deportees. They stated that 33 came from Haryana and 33 from Gujarat. Thirty deportees were from Punjab, while three each were from Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh. Two came from Chandigarh. Among them, 19 were women and 13 were minors. The minors included a four-year-old boy and two girls, aged five and seven.

Swift Action by Authorities

After landing, authorities acted quickly. Multiple agencies questioned the deportees inside the Amritsar airport terminal. The Punjab Police and central intelligence checked them for any criminal records. Those residing in Amritsar were taken home in police vehicles. In contrast, deportees from Gujarat landed at the Ahmedabad airport earlier on Thursday.

Diplomatic Timing

This U.S. action comes just days before a significant diplomatic visit. Prime Minister Modi is scheduled to visit Washington on February 13. He will hold wide-ranging talks with President Donald Trump. The timing of the deportations adds pressure to the upcoming discussions.

Attack on the Indian Consulate

The attack took place on March 19, 2023, when attackers tried to set fire to the Consulate General of India in San Francisco by sprinkling inflammable substances on the building early in the morning. They later continued committing criminal trespass, damaging government property, and attacking officials from the consulate. The attack got worse as pro-Khalistani protesters, allegedly the suspects, gathered outside the consulate, shouting slogans and harassing the consulate staff when they were leaving the premises.

A video of the attack, which emerged on social media, shows the attackers protesting in front of the consulate. This is further evidence of how serious the incident was. Within three months after the first attempt, another arson attempt on the consulate was reported in July 2023, prompting authorities to conduct investigations.

US Condemns the Attack

The United States condemned the attack, terming it a “criminal offense,” and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) later reassured India’s National Investigative Agency that it was “aggressively” pursuing the case. However, the Indian government stressed that the attackers must be brought to book.

According to him, “The arson attack on our consulate in San Francisco is a very, very serious matter, and it is something for which we expect accountability. We would like to see that people who did it are held responsible.”

What India Aims at from the US Side

It is gaining a lot of attention globally, and especially within India; the Indian government hopes that US authorities will deal sternly and that those behind it will face judicial consequences. The remarks from Jaishankar had been on the safety and security of India’s missions and officials stationed abroad.

</excerpt>

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, during his meeting with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, highlighted India’s concerns over prolonged visa delays. Addressing the media after their discussion, Jaishankar emphasized that such delays negatively impact business, tourism, and the overall bilateral relationship. “The relationship is not well-served if it takes too long for people to obtain visas. These delays ultimately hinder business, affect tourism, and constrain people-to-people interaction, which forms the foundation of our relationship,” he stated.

Jaishankar on Front-Row Seat at Trump’s Inauguration

When asked about his prominent seating at Donald Trump’s inauguration as the 47th President of the United States on January 29, Jaishankar responded, “The special envoy of Prime Minister Narendra Modi is naturally treated with great respect.” Representing India at the ceremony upon the US government’s invitation, the minister’s presence underscored the significance of India-US relations. Over his three-day visit, Jaishankar engaged with several key figures from the Trump administration, attending critical meetings to further strengthen bilateral ties.

Key Meetings and Quad Ministerial Engagement

Apart from his meeting with Secretary of State Rubio, Jaishankar held discussions with National Security Advisor Mike Waltz and participated in the inaugural Quad ministerial meeting alongside counterparts from Australia, Japan, and the US. These engagements highlighted India’s commitment to fostering strategic partnerships and enhancing cooperation in key areas, including security and trade.

Trump Administration Prioritizes Ties with India

Jaishankar noted that the Trump administration was keen on India’s presence at the inauguration, reflecting their commitment to advancing the bilateral relationship. He cited Prime Minister Modi’s early call with President Trump and his own previous visit to establish initial contacts with US officials as indicators of the growing strategic partnership. “It is evident that the Trump administration is prioritizing the bilateral relationship, and we are working towards further strengthening it in the coming days,” Jaishankar remarked.

India and the US are set to strengthen their relations under President Donald Trump. This was clear during his inauguration on Monday. External Affairs Minister (EAM) S. Jaishankar attended the event as Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s special envoy. He was given a seat in the front row, alongside Ecuadorian President Daniel Noboa. This marked a notable shift in protocol.

Jaishankar’s Key Role

At the Capitol Rotunda, Jaishankar sat in the front row, while Japanese Foreign Minister Takeshi Iwaya was seated two rows behind. Jaishankar carried a letter from PM Modi for President Trump.

On X, he expressed his pride, stating: “Privileged to represent as external affairs minister and special envoy of the PM at the swearing-in ceremony of the 47th President of the United States today in Washington DC.”

Jaishankar meets US officials Blinken and Sullivan to discuss India-US ties and global issues, ahead of the Trump administration transition.
</excerpt>

On Friday, December 27, Indian Minister of External Affairs, S. Jaishankar, shared that he had met with US Secretary of State Antony Blinken during his visit to the United States. In a post on X, Jaishankar mentioned that their meeting took place on Thursday evening, where they reviewed the progress of the bilateral relationship, along with regional and global issues. This meeting is expected to be the last official one between the two foreign ministers before the end of the Joe Biden administration.

Jaishankar expressed optimism about the future of India-US relations, saying, “Reviewed the advancement of India-US partnership over the last four years. Agreed that our cooperation has strengthened in many domains, just as our comfort levels have grown correspondingly. Confident that India-US relationship will serve our mutual interests as well as global good. (sic).”

US politician Mike Waltz, set to become NSA-designate, emphasized that both the Biden and Trump administrations would present a united front against adversaries, stating, “Jake Sullivan and I have had discussions. We have met. For our adversaries out there that think this is a time of opportunity, that they can play one administration off the other, they are wrong…We are hand in glove.
Arrested While Fishing in Palk Bay

On December 8, the Sri Lankan Navy apprehended eight fishermen from Tamil Nadu’s Ramanathapuram district. Additionally, two of their boats were confiscated.

The arrested fishermen included: Mangadu Bhatrappan (55), Reddayurani Kannan (52), Chinna Reddayurani Muthuraj (55), Agasthiyar Kutam Kali (50), Thangachimad Yasin (46), Jesus, Uchipulli Ramakrishnan, Velu

Subsequently, they were taken to the Kangesanturai Naval Camp.

Fishermen Crossed Alleged Maritime Borders

According to reports, the fishermen ventured out to sea on December 7 from Mandapam with 324 boats. Subsequently, they were fishing near Delft Island in the Palk Bay when the Sri Lankan Navy intervened.

Furthermore, the Mandapam Fishermen Association revealed that the Sri Lankan Navy accused the fishermen of crossing into Sri Lankan waters. Meanwhile, during the operation, the Navy also seized two of their boats.

Ongoing Concerns Over Arrests

This incident increases the number of arrests of Indian fishermen by the Sri Lankan Navy. As a result, the issue has captured the attention of both the Tamil Nadu government and the central government.

Chief Minister MK Stalin consistently raises this concern with External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar. Addressing the matter, Stalin emphasized, “The detention of our fishermen and the confiscation of their boats cause serious distress and uncertainty among the coastal communities. I have repeatedly reiterated that concrete and proactive steps must be taken to resolve this festering issue diplomatically.”

Central Government Promises Action

In response to Stalin’s appeals, Jaishankar assured that the Indian government is taking proactive steps. Moreover, he emphasized that the Indian High Commission in Colombo and the Consulate in Jaffna are working diligently to secure the early release of the detained fishermen.

Moving Towards Long-Term Solutions

While the return of the fishermen is a relief, the issue remains unresolved. Moving forward, stronger diplomatic engagement and clear maritime agreements between India and Sri Lanka are essential to prevent such incidents.

Jaishankar, highlighting India’s diplomatic efforts to address the situation. Speaking at the Manama Dialogue in Bahrain during a two-day visit, Jaishankar emphasized India’s focus on mitigating the security risks in West Asia, given their impact on trade and energy supplies.

He noted that India is working to address the challenges posed by the conflict, mentioning the diversion of maritime routes and rising shipping costs. “In recent times, for all of us, the relationship or absence of it between Israel and Iran has been particularly a source of concern, so some of our diplomatic efforts have focused on that particular aspect,” Jaishankar said, without elaborating.

West Asia’s strategic importance for India, with its energy resources and nine million expatriates, makes the region critical to India’s foreign policy. Regarding the Israel-Hamas conflict, Jaishankar reiterated India’s condemnation of terrorism and hostage-taking by Hamas, while urging Israel to consider humanitarian concerns and calling for a return to dialogue for a two-state solution.

On security, Jaishankar highlighted India’s naval presence in the Gulf of Aden and Northern Arabian Sea, which has facilitated rescues and ship escorts. He discussed India’s collaboration with Operation Prosperity Guardian and participation in the Combined Maritime Forces in Bahrain.

Jaishankar also underscored the significance of connectivity projects like the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC) and International North-South Transport Corridor (INSTC). “The IMEC will bring the Atlantic to India, while the IMTT will connect India to the Pacific,” he said, envisioning a corridor linking Europe, the Arabian Peninsula, and Asia.

</excerpt>

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar has firmly defended India’s purchase of Russian oil amid criticism from Western nations. Speaking to Corriere della Sera in Italy, he questioned Europe’s selective disengagement with Russia, stating that “life is about respecting other people’s interests.”

Key Points from Jaishankar’s Statements

Criticism of Europe’s Selective Approach:
Jaishankar noted that Europe has not completely cut off business ties with Russia despite its “principled stance.” He emphasized that different regions have their own priorities and interests.

“If everything is a matter of principle, why hasn’t Europe stopped all trade with Russia?” he asked.

Impact on Global Energy Markets:
Europe’s shift to alternative energy sources has strained global markets. Jaishankar highlighted the unfair expectation for India to bear higher costs to appease European priorities.

“Why should India pay higher prices just to make you happy?” he remarked.

India’s Stance on the Russia-Ukraine War

Jaishankar reiterated India’s commitment to diplomacy and dialogue as the path to resolving the Russia-Ukraine conflict. He stressed the need for negotiations between Moscow and Kyiv, urging global efforts to bring both sides to the table.

“A solution doesn’t lie on the battlefield,” he said, emphasizing the wider global impact of prolonged conflicts.

On International Criminal Court (ICC)

When asked about ICC arrest warrants for leaders like Vladimir Putin, Jaishankar reminded that India is not a signatory to the ICC.

“When you’re not members of a body, that already tells you what your views are about that body,” he quipped.

These key discussions took place during a meeting between External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi in Rio de Janeiro on the sidelines of the G20 Summit.

This meeting marks the first high-level engagement between India and China following the successful disengagement process in the contentious Depsang and Demchok areas of eastern Ladakh. Both ministers acknowledged that the disengagement has contributed to peace and stability along the border.

Direct flights between the two countries were suspended in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic and have not resumed, despite the easing of restrictions. The Ladakh standoff, which began in May 2020, further strained ties. In June of the same year, a violent clash in Galwan resulted in the loss of 20 Indian soldiers, with unconfirmed casualties on the Chinese side.

The resolution of the standoff involved extensive military talks, and this recent dialogue signals a thaw in bilateral relations. Both nations aim to move forward by addressing key issues, including easing travel and cultural exchanges.

This incident has amplified ongoing discussions about media freedom and raised questions on the impartiality of social media regulations across borders.

Bharadwaj concluded the statement, saying, “We remain steadfast in our mission to bring essential stories to the public and will continue to advocate for an inclusive media landscape.” With the support of the global community, Australia Today reaffirmed its dedication to maintaining a free and open journalism space.

</excerpt>

Speaking at an event in Canberra on Wednesday, India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar remarked that the United States is expected to continue adopting a more inward-looking foreign policy approach, irrespective of the result in the presidential election.

Jaishankar noted that the trend of the U.S. reassessing its global commitments began as far back as the Obama administration, with a growing focus on domestic issues. “Probably starting from President Barack Obama, the U.S. has become much more cautious about its global commitments,” he said, adding that this shift is likely to persist. He acknowledged that former President Trump was “more articulate and expressive” about this shift.

During the discussion, held alongside Australian and New Zealand foreign ministers, Jaishankar emphasized the importance of viewing American foreign policy through a national lens rather than solely through the ideological perspective of its leaders. “If we are truly analyzing them, I think we have to prepare for a world where the kind of dominance and generosity that characterized the U.S. in earlier days may not continue,” he concluded.

Jaishankar’s comments come as election results continue to pour in, with attention on how the next administration might shape America’s role on the global stage.

</excerpt>

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar shared his insights into the future of American foreign policy, suggesting that the United States is expected to adopt a more inward-looking stance moving forward. Speaking at an event in Canberra on Wednesday, Jaishankar emphasized that the outcome of the 2024 presidential election would unlikely result in significant changes to the broader trends in US foreign policy.

From Obama to Trump: A Shift Toward Caution

Jaishankar noted that, since President Barack Obama’s tenure, the US has grown more cautious in its global commitments. While President Donald Trump was more outspoken and expressive about this shift, the minister believes that the trajectory of US foreign policy has become increasingly conservative, focusing more on national interests than global responsibilities. He further stressed that, regardless of the outcome of the upcoming election, this trend is expected to continue.

Global Dominance of the US May Not Persist

The External Affairs Minister also suggested that the era of American dominance and generosity on the global stage, which characterized the earlier years of US foreign policy, may be coming to an end. Jaishankar encouraged the world to view American policy not just through the lens of current administrations’ ideological perspectives, but through the broader national lens of evolving global interests.

Jaishankar’s remarks followed a recent attack on the Hindu Sabha temple in Brampton, Ontario, by pro-Khalistan elements who disrupted a consular event organized by the temple authorities and the Indian Consulate.

Concerns Over Nijjar Case Allegations and Diplomatic Surveillance

Jaishankar also addressed Canada’s accusation regarding the alleged murder of Hardeep Singh Nijjar, claiming that Canada has developed a trend of making allegations without concrete evidence. He further expressed concern over reports that Indian diplomats are under surveillance in Canada, calling it “unacceptable” and emphasizing India’s objections to such measures.

Video Evidence of Political Space for Extremists

Highlighting the recent temple incident, Jaishankar urged people to review the video of the altercation in Brampton, suggesting that it reflects the political space provided to extremist groups within Canada. This, he implied, is indicative of a broader environment that tolerates or enables radical actions against Indian institutions and community members.

Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong echoed Jaishankar’s concerns, describing the vandalism incidents as “upsetting” for the Indian community, especially given the attack’s proximity to Diwali celebrations. Wong assured the Indian community that local officials had taken a firm stance against the acts of vandalism and intimidation.

India’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) strongly condemned the violence at the Brampton temple, demanding that the perpetrators be held accountable. MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal released a statement calling on Canada to ensure the safety of places of worship, particularly in light of recent escalations involving separatist elements.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi also condemned the incident on social media, describing it as a “cowardly attempt” to intimidate Indian diplomats. Modi urged the Canadian government to uphold the rule of law and take decisive action against those responsible. “Such acts of violence will never weaken India’s resolve,” PM Modi wrote on X, demanding justice for the attack on the Hindu temple.

</excerpt>

Following External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar’s visit to Male, Maldives President Mohamed Muizzu emphasized that his government would not permit actions contrary to its foreign policy, reaffirming that he prioritizes Maldives’ interests. This statement was in response to a question about whether his government would support the ‘India Out’ campaign initiated by the ruling PNC-PPM coalition last year. President Muizzu clarified that there has been no shift in the country’s foreign policy. His remarks came shortly after Minister Jaishankar departed for India after a two-day visit, during which several projects were launched.

During Jaishankar’s visit, President Muizzu and his ministers displayed a warm and cooperative attitude, despite previous tensions between the two countries since Muizzu took office on November 17. This change in tone is largely attributed to Maldives’ severe economic crisis, with the country facing a substantial budgetary gap of several hundred million USD. India has already extended significant financial assistance, including rolling over a USD 50 million payment to the State Bank of India in May, with another USD 50 million due in September. Maldives also faces a USD 1 billion market repayment in 2026, raising the risk of default.

While the Modi government remains committed to supporting Maldives as a neighbor, the situation also sends a message to Bangladesh, which is similarly struggling with economic issues. India, unlike China, the US, or Western countries, has consistently stepped in to help these nations during crises. Despite President Muizzu’s attempts to secure financial aid from Turkey, China, and the Middle East, it is clear that only India can provide the necessary development, security, and financial assistance without demanding significant concessions.

President Muizzu’s decision to strengthen bilateral cooperation with India reflects his assessment of the past year and the realization that India is the only reliable partner for delivering on development, security, and financial needs. Major projects like the 28-island initiative and the Greater Male connectivity project, both launched before Muizzu came to power, are nearing completion and serve the national interest rather than any political agenda. Over the past year, Muizzu has also recognized the critical role of Indian security support in protecting Maldives from threats such as drug trafficking, piracy, and arms smuggling in the Indian Ocean.

Similarly, Bangladesh’s interim government will likely realize that it faces significant challenges in development, security, and financial stability, and that India under Modi is the only country willing to help without demanding unreasonable returns. Bangladesh, currently embroiled in a political crisis with Islamists targeting Hindu minorities and supporters of the ousted Awami League of Sheikh Hasina, is also on the brink of an economic crisis and may soon need to seek India’s assistance, much like Sri Lanka did in 2022.

President Muizzu’s recent statements are encouraging, indicating that Maldives recognizes the dangers posed by the rise of Islamists and the importance of maintaining strong ties with India. The red-carpet treatment extended to Minister Jaishankar during his visit reflects the growing understanding among neighboring countries that Modi’s India is a partner that cannot be underestimated.

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy engaged in a phone conversation on Thursday to discuss the rapidly evolving situation in Bangladesh, as well as developments in West Asia. Jaishankar shared this update on X (formerly Twitter), stating, “Received a call from UK Foreign Secretary @DavidLammy today. Discussed the situation in Bangladesh and West Asia.”

The conversation comes amidst ongoing uncertainty surrounding former Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who has recently resigned amid widespread protests in her home country. Hasina, currently in India, had been speculated to be seeking asylum in the UK, but reports suggest that these plans have faltered. The UK’s reluctance to offer her refuge is attributed to British immigration laws, which stipulate that asylum applications cannot be made from outside the country and are assessed on a case-by-case basis, according to PTI.

Sajeeb Wazed Joy, Hasina’s son and adviser, has dismissed the asylum speculation as “rumours,” asserting that there are no current plans for his mother to seek asylum in the UK or elsewhere. He stated, “Nothing of this sort has been planned. Sooner or later, there has to be a restoration of democracy in Bangladesh, and hopefully, that will be between the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and Awami League. Then Sheikh Hasina will be back.”

Sheikh Hasina, who served as Bangladesh’s Prime Minister for 15 years, resigned on Monday following escalating protests initially sparked by opposition to a job quota scheme and demands for her removal. She arrived at Hindon airbase in Ghaziabad, near the Indian capital, on Monday. The External Affairs Ministry has stated that it is up to Sheikh Hasina to decide her next steps and has no further updates on her situation. “It is not appropriate to talk about her plans,” said MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal.

In the all-party meeting held on Tuesday, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar briefed political leaders about the ongoing crisis in Bangladesh following the dramatic resignation and flight of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. Hasina, who fled Dhaka and landed in Ghaziabad on Monday, is currently receiving support from the Indian government as she recovers from the shock of recent events.

Jaishankar reassured the meeting attendees, including Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi, that India is actively assisting Sheikh Hasina. “Sheikh Hasina is in a state of shock, and we are giving her time to recover before discussing her future plans,” he stated. Additionally, Jaishankar emphasized that New Delhi had communicated with Bangladesh’s army chief to ensure the safety of over 10,000 Indian students in the country.

Following the meeting, Jaishankar shared on his X account, “Briefed an All-Party meeting in Parliament today about the ongoing developments in Bangladesh. Appreciate the unanimous support and understanding that was extended.” His post highlighted the solidarity among political parties in supporting the government’s efforts during this crisis.

Congress leader Karti Chidambaram echoed this sentiment, stating that the party stands with the government on matters of national security and interest. The meeting saw participation from key figures including Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, Home Minister Amit Shah, Health Minister J P Nadda, JD(U) leader and Union Minister Rajiv Ranjan Singh ‘Lalan’, JD(S) leader and Union Minister H D Kumaraswamy, DMK leader T R Baalu, SP leader Ram Gopal Yadav, Trinamool leader Sudip Bandyopadhyay, and NCP leader Supriya Sule.

Sheikh Hasina’s government has been grappling with violent protests over job quotas for select groups supporting her, resulting in over 300 deaths. Her departure from Bangladesh marks a critical point in the ongoing unrest.

On Tuesday, the military aircraft that brought Hasina to India returned to Bangladesh without her, as she awaits visa approval for political asylum in the United Kingdom. Her future plans, including a potential move to London, remain contingent on the outcome of her asylum request.

</excerpt>

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar stated that India needs to get ready for significant changes in the Indian Ocean, particularly due to concerns about China’s increasing activities in the region. He made these comments while participating in an interactive session after delivering the Jasjit Singh memorial lecture on “India’s grand strategy in an uncertain multipolar world.”

Jaishankar emphasized that India is seeing new maritime competition in the Indian Ocean, which had not been present before. He pointed out that there is no use in complaining about this situation; instead, India must be prepared to face and compete with these changes. He noted that China has expanded its naval presence and surveillance activities in the Indian Ocean, including sending vessels to Sri Lanka and the Maldives. These activities are seen as part of China’s broader strategy and could be related to gathering data for submarine warfare.

Jaishankar also explained India’s “SAGAR” (Security and Growth for All in the Region) maritime initiative, which aims to promote regional security and development. He highlighted the success of India’s “Neighbourhood First” policy, which focuses on strengthening economic ties with neighboring countries. He gave the example of India’s support for Sri Lanka during its recent economic crisis.

Jaishankar acknowledged that competition is a reality in India’s neighborhood, and the country must work hard to compete effectively. He praised India’s ability to stand up for its interests and outperform other nations in the region. Despite challenges and political ups and downs with neighboring countries, Jaishankar noted that India has the resources, capabilities, and strategic position to manage these issues effectively.

</excerpt>

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar stated on Friday that managing India’s relationships with its neighbouring countries is challenging due to historical context, the size of these nations, and sociological differences.

“We recognize today that given our history, the size of our neighbours, the sociology of our neighbours and ourselves, these are not easy relationships to manage,” said Jaishankar.

He noted that political ups and downs are common among many of India’s neighbours and that stirring sentiments about India is often an easy way out. These realities must be accepted, he said.

“We also need to appreciate that today we have more resources and more capabilities. We are geographically at the centre. Our size is so much bigger,” said Jaishankar.

“If you look at our neighbours today, in many cases we have power grids, power plants, we are exporting or importing energy. We have fuel pipelines, roads, rail, and waterway connections. We have tried to proof the relationship against political ups and downs,” he added.

He remarked that there have been instances where India has become a political issue in some neighbouring countries, but it has successfully managed to mitigate intense situations through effective measures.

India has demonstrated its capability to assert its interests, compete with other countries, and often surpass them in resources and performance.

On June 30, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that the world is closely watching India as its policies, commitment, determination, decisions, and investments are becoming the foundation for global progress.

“We achieved independence as a poor nation and those who wished to exploit us did so until the very end. In 100 years, after overcoming numerous challenges and meeting our goals, India will mark its 100th year of independence as a developed country in 2047,” said Narendra Modi at the CII post-Budget conference in Delhi.

</excerpt>

On Monday, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar accused Congress leader Rahul Gandhi of “attacking Hindus” after Gandhi launched a fierce criticism of the BJP in the Lok Sabha. Jaishankar also alluded to Rahul Gandhi’s past comments on the Indian Army and his act of tearing up an ordinance in Parliament. Jaishankar’s remarks, posted on X, stated, “This is now the Leader of Opposition. Who attacks Hindus while professing brotherhood to all. Who disparages the Indian Army’s bravery, while expressing concern for their welfare. Who tears up Cabinet decisions, while preaching respect for the Constitution. Welcome to the politics of the Congress Party.”

Rahul Gandhi’s speech, delivered during the debate on the Motion of Thanks to the President’s address, included assertions that BJP leaders are not true Hindus because they engage in “violence and hate” continuously. This statement provoked significant protests from BJP members. Gandhi referred to teachings of non-violence and fearlessness attributed to Lord Shiva, accusing BJP MPs of contradicting these principles through their actions.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi intervened, emphasizing the seriousness of Gandhi’s allegations against the entire Hindu community. Gandhi responded by clarifying that his remarks targeted the BJP, asserting that neither the BJP, RSS, nor Modi could claim to represent all Hindus.

The heated exchange saw multiple interruptions, including interjections from five cabinet ministers and Home Minister Amit Shah, who demanded an apology from Gandhi for his remarks. Gandhi’s speech lasted approximately an hour and 40 minutes, punctuated by these numerous interventions.
