Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar Hospitalized at AIIMS Delhi

Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar, 73, was brought to AIIMS Delhi in the early hours of Sunday morning following complaints of uneasiness and chest pain, as per a PTI report.

Under Observation in Critical Care Unit

Dhankhar was admitted to the hospital at about 2 am and is being kept under observation in the Critical Care Unit (CCU). He is being treated by Dr. Rajiv Narang, Head of the Department of Cardiology at AIIMS, while a team of doctors keeps a close watch on his health.

Vice President’s Health Stable

As per sources quoted by PTI, Dhankhar’s health is stable, and he is still under medical observation.

Congress Secures ’70 Signatures For No-Confidence Motion’ Against Jagdeep Dhankhar

A no-confidence motion against Rajya Sabha Chairperson Jagdeep Dhankhar is fast becoming a certainty with Congress leader Ranjeet Ranjan confirming that the party has garnered more than enough support from MPs to demand a debate. The no-confidence motion is centred around allegations of partisan behaviour by Mr. Dhankhar in his handling of the House, particularly after a heated exchange in the Upper House.

According to sources, people from various opposition parties-the Trinamool Congress led by Mamata Banerjee and AamAadmi Party headed by Arvind Kejriwal, among others who usually are not allied with the Congress, could vote in favour of the no-confidence motion.

Congress Galvanises Support for No-Confidence Motion

Congress leader Ranjan said in a statement to NDTV that they had already managed to get 70 signatures, which is way more than the 50 needed to pass the motion. She said that the motion would be supported by a wide range of opposition parties, who have united in response to what they describe as “unprecedented” actions within the Rajya Sabha.

“We have 70 signatures, and we are confident in bringing this no-confidence motion against the Rajya Sabha chair,” Ranjan said. She further emphasised that the party’s move was prompted by the recent events inside the House, particularly the chaotic scenes following BJP’s attacks on Congress leaders.

Tensions Escalate After BJP‘s Attack on Congress Leaders

The controversy erupted on Monday when the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), led by JP Nadda, launched a scathing attack on senior Congress leaders, Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi, accusing them of having links to businessman George Soros and a media organisation partially funded by his foundation. The BJP‘s claims, which revolved around alleged connections between Mrs. Gandhi and organisations with views on Kashmir, were met with a strong rebuttal from Congress leader Mallikarjun Kharge.

However, MPs from both sides had their say when they clashed in a shouting match that left the House in adjournments several times. Congress has said it moved the no-confidence motion partly because of the way Mr. Jagdeep Dhankhar handled the situation, permitting comments against Mrs. Gandhi but rejecting 11 notices by BJP MPs seeking a discussion on the issue.

Congress Accuses Dhankhar of Bias

Kharge particularly pointed out that Mr. Dhankhar’s handling of the BJP’s comments against Mrs. Gandhi was biased, as he allowed the remarks despite rejecting BJP‘s requests for debate. “What the Leader of the House (Mr. Nadda) said is a lie, and it is wrong to damage the image of a member who is not present,” Kharge said.

This is the latest in the series of clashes between the opposition and the BJP. Last week, the BJP had also proclaimed Rahul Gandhi a “traitor” and had implicated him and Soros along with some other U.S. agencies allegedly trying to destabilise the country.

BJP’s Charge of Foreign Hand in Indian Affairs

The BJP’s charges at a time when the opposition was seeking to take up for raising critical issues in Parliament such as the clashes in Uttar Pradesh‘s Sambhal over the survey of the mosque, and reports related to the Adani Group. The ruling party has also targeted the OCCRP (Organised Crime and Corruption Reporting Project), which is partly funded by George Soros, claiming that the organisation publishes reports that are critical of India, and accusing the Congress of using these reports to attack the government and Indian business interests.

The US Congress has strongly countered any such claims, with members declaring, “We are patriots,” and that the party is not indebted to any foreign influence.

Response of US Government to Claims

The allegations by BJP garnered a strong response from the U.S. government when it distanced itself with the accusations. The U.S. said that its involvement in any independent organisation, such as OCCRP, was only to enhance and develop journalism and did not intercede in editorial decisions. Such action was seen as the desperate move of the United States to calm the tempests between the two countries during the political discourse in India.

A dramatic turn of events unfolded in the Rajya Sabha on Friday when a wad of cash was discovered on a seat assigned to Congress MP and Senior Advocate Abhishek Manu Singhvi. The incident has raised eyebrows, sparked a political debate, and prompted a formal investigation by Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar.

Singhvi, expressing astonishment over the incident, clarified his brief presence in the house on the day in question. “I am quite astonished to even hear about it. I never heard of it. I reached the inside of the House yesterday at 12.57 pm. The House rose at 1 pm. From 1 to 1:30 pm, I sat with Ayodhya Prasad in the canteen and had lunch. At 1:30 pm, I left Parliament. So my total stay in the House yesterday was 3 minutes and my stay in the canteen was 30 minutes. I find it bizarre that even on such issues politics is raised,” Singhvi stated.

Welcoming the investigation ordered by Chairman Dhankhar, Singhvi emphasised the need for accountability and security reforms in Parliament. “Of course, there must be an inquiry as to how people can come and put anything anywhere in any seat. It means that each of us must have a seat where the seat itself can be locked and the key can be carried home by the MP because everybody can then do things on the seat and make allegations about this. If it was not tragic and serious it would be comical. I think everybody should cooperate in getting to the bottom of this and if there is a failing in the security agencies that must also be completely exposed,” he added.

Chairman Dhankhar provided details of the discovery earlier in the day. “I hereby inform the members that during the routine anti-sabotage check of the chamber after the adjournment of the House yesterday, a wad of currency notes was recovered by the security officials from seat number 222, which is presently allotted to Abhishek Manu Singhvi, elected from the state of Telangana. The matter was brought to my notice, and I made sure an investigation takes place and the same is underway,” Dhankhar said.

Inside the house, Congress President and Leader of Opposition in the Rajya Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge criticized the decision to name Singhvi publicly while the investigation was ongoing. “I am not going beyond that, I know that you will not allow us. You said that this matter is under investigation, then his/her name should not have been taken. I request that until the investigation is done and the authenticity of the incident is established, a member should not be named. Can he do like this? Aaisa chillar kaam krti hai aur desh ko barbaad kr rahe hai yeh log (BJP),” Kharge remarked.

“I, Jaya Amitabh Bachchan, would like to say that I am an artist and understand body language and expressions. I am sorry, but your tone is not acceptable. We are colleagues, and while you may be in the Chair, this tone is inappropriate,” Bachchan said.

Dhankhar swiftly interrupted, advising Bachchan to take her seat. He asserted, “Jaya ji, take your seat. You have a great reputation. An actor follows the director’s lead. During the intense debate on the Motion of Thanks to the President’s address in the Rajya Sabha, Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar and Leader of the Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge shared several lighthearted moments in the House on Monday.

During the debate, when Kharge stood up to speak, he mentioned that he couldn’t stand for long due to foot pain. In response, the Chairman quickly remarked, “You may address the House while sitting.”

Kharge said he would sit only if the Chairman allows and Dhankhar replied, “We have to ensure you are comfortable while addressing the House. If the physical disability or pain is of that extent that here and outside you are unable to stand, then you make take your own call.”

Smiling at the Chairman’s reply, Kharge commented that a speech delivered while seated lacks the intensity of one given while standing. The Chairman concurred and laughed, noting that there is no ‘jazba’ (passion) when speaking from a seated position.

“Kharge ji, I have helped you with this matter. I have kept your jazba (passion) alive,” said Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar and the Leader of Opposition too responded with humour, “Sometimes you keep helping us, and remember you too.”

The amicable exchange between the two prompted laughter in the Upper House of Parliament.

When Kharge thanked the Chairman for allowing him to participate in the debate, some members from the treasury benches began laughing, leading Kharge to ask why they were laughing.

“This is how they mislead me,” said Kharge and everyone laughed again in the House. Kharge then added, “The Chairman also misleads me.”

Chairman replied, “Let’s delete this from the record that I also do the same.”

Last Friday, Leader of the Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge entered the Well of the Rajya Sabha during a protest over paper leaks. VP Dhankhar Urges Corporate, Public Leaders To Back R&D

Vice-President Jagdeep Dhankhar urged corporates and “public leaders” on Monday to contribute as much as possible to research and development, emphasizing its potential impact on the country’s economic growth and diplomatic influence.

Speaking at the 18th foundation day celebration of ICMR-National Institute of Traditional Medicine here, the vice-president said, “We are living in big times. India, home to one sixth of humanity, is no longer a sleeping giant. No longer a country without potential. It is a country on the rise and the rise is unstoppable.”

Reflecting on his time in parliament and his tenure as a union minister in 1991, Dhankar remarked that back in 1990, the size of India’s economy was smaller than that of London and Paris.

“… look at where we are at the moment, the fifth largest global economy, ahead of the UK. They ruled us for over 100 years. (We are) ahead of France, and it is a matter of time we will be ahead of Japan and Germany also. No small achievement,” he said.

Dhankar emphasized the importance of not only controlling the disease itself but also addressing its source. He underscored the significance of prioritizing precaution and prevention, stating, “which can be done by dissemination of knowledge that is already there with us.”

“We must in the country develop a culture that every Indian has to be fit and healthy because the entire country at the moment is part of a marathon march for a Viksit Bharat in 2047. You all are part of this march. You have to be fighting fit. Once that happens not the sky, even space, is not the limit of our growth and that is happening,” he said.

Highlighting the significant role of research and development, the vice president underscored that it is a lengthy and costly process and said, “I appeal to the corporates, I appeal to public leaders. They must do all that they can to support research and development. This research and development will reflect in the growth of our economy and even in our diplomatic power.”

“When this country was battling covid, you will be surprised, we supported 100 other countries to tackle it. They (countries) say — India is a true friend. We got assistance at the time when India was also tackling its big problem, and therefore I urge you and everyone in the corporate (world), please come forward and use your CSR to promote research, development, innovation, startups focusing on these areas. They will do us a great good,” he added.

As per the vice-president, India’s extensive traditional medicine systems, including Ayurveda, Siddha, Unani, and Yoga, stand as a testament to the deep wisdom of our forebears. They represent a seamless integration of science, philosophy, and spirituality, highlighting the holistic equilibrium between mind, body, spirit, and nature.

Noting that the country has a visionary leadership, Dhankar said, “we are having big… achievements in space, on land, on roads, on infrastructure, on sea, in defence… it should not be difficult for us to involve every village in this pious task to make us health conscious, health aware.”

“These days, we find people get into depression, people are affected by tension and stress. New kinds of diseases are coming up because we are slightly departing from our cultural ethos. Communication is fundamental,” he added.

A memorial ceremony is being held in Tehran to honor Raisi, Abdollahian, and other Iranian officials who died in the helicopter crash in northwestern Iran on Sunday afternoon. Supreme Leader Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Hosseini Khamenei has declared five days of national mourning.

According to Press TV, the ceremony is attended by at least 10 heads of state and 30 delegations led by ministers and speakers. Among the dignitaries paying respects to Raisi and the other officials were Azerbaijan Prime Minister Ali Asadov, Pakistan PM Shehbaz Sharif, Tunisian President Kais Saied, Syrian Prime Minister Hussein Arnous, Taliban’s Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi, and Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia’ Al Sudani.

VP Dhankhar arrived in Tehran on Wednesday afternoon to offer condolences and participate in the memorial ceremony for President Ebrahim Raisi and other officials. He left for Iran early on Wednesday (May 22).

Meanwhile, thousands in Iran took to the streets as Raisi’s funeral ceremony began on Friday in Tabriz, the northwestern city where the crash occurred on Sunday. President of India Droupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi have expressed their condolences to the Iranian government and people.

The Iranian government declared Wednesday a public holiday. Raisi’s body will be buried in his birthplace, Mashhad, on Thursday, as announced by Vice-President of the Republic, Mohsen Mansouri.

VP Dhankhar Travels to Tehran for Iranian President Raisi’s Funeral

Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar departed for Tehran on Wednesday morning to attend the funeral of late Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi, Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, and other officials who tragically perished in a helicopter crash. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) confirmed this in an official statement.

“VP Jagdeep Dhankhar embarks on a visit to Tehran to attend the official ceremony to pay condolences on the tragic demise of President Seyyed Ebrahim Raisi and Foreign Minister H. Amir-Abdollahian, of Iran,” MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal announced in a post on X.

Mass Mourning in Iran

Thousands of Iranians took to the streets as the funeral ceremony for Raisi commenced on Friday in Tabriz, the north-western city near the crash site. The helicopter crash occurred on Sunday, resulting in the deaths of the high-ranking officials.

The Iranian government has declared Wednesday a public holiday. A funeral is set to be held in Tehran, with the country’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah leading prayers. Raisi’s body will be interred in his birthplace, Mashhad, on Thursday, as announced by Vice-President of the Republic, Mohsen Mansouri.

India’s Condolences

India observed a day of national mourning on May 21 in honor of the deceased Iranian leaders. Additionally, Iran’s Supreme Leader Khamenei announced five days of mourning and declared a public holiday, closing offices across the country.

Parliament security breach: LoP Kharge writes to Rajya Sabha chairman Dhankhar, seeks Amit Shah’s statement

Mallikarjun Kharge, the leader of the opposition in the Rajya Sabha and national president of the Congress, wrote to Jagdeep Dhankhar, the chairman of the Upper House, on Thursday regarding the significant security breach that occurred in the new Parliament complex on Wednesday. The LoP in the Upper House demanded that Union Home Minister Amit Shah make a statement on the matter, after which a discussion should take place in accordance with Rule 267. In his letter to Vice President Dhankhar, the LoP classified the breach in Parliament security as a serious matter.

“The breach of Parliament security which occurred on 13th December 2023 in the Lok Sabha Chamber and the Parliament precincts is a very grave matter unparalleled in the recent past. In view of the gravity of the matter, myself in consultation with floor leaders of INDIA Parties in Parliament have come to a considered view that the matter is of such a critical importance that it needs to be raised under Rule 267 of the Rules and Procedure of Council of States (Rajya Sabha),” Kharge wrote in his letter.

“Further, till the Minister of Home Affairs makes a statement on this matter followed by a discussion under Rule 267, there is no occasion for taking up any other business in the House or even for any meeting to “sort out this matter” in any other manner,” he stated.
Earlier in the day, Opposition leaders met in the chamber of the LoP, Rajya Sabha to discuss the Parliament security breach.

Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, a Congress MP, told reporters on Thursday that members of the opposition chose to bring up the security breach in both Houses. Before relocating the members to the new parliament building, appropriate security measures ought to have been put in place. SC asks AAP MP Raghav Chadha to meet RS Chairperson Jagdeep Dhankhar

In light of his suspension from the House, the Supreme Court on Friday ordered suspended Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Raghav Chadha to meet with Rajya Sabha Chairperson Jagdeep Dhankhar and offer an unconditional apology. Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud, Justices JB Pardiwala and Manoj Misra, and the rest of the bench hoped the Chairperson would adopt a “sympathetic” stance. The MP intends to maintain the honour of the House of which he is a member, and he will make an appointment with the Chairperson of the Rajya Sabha to offer an unconditional apology, according to statements made by Chadha’s lawyer, which the bench duly noted.

Chadha was suspended for not obtaining the consent of five Rajya Sabha members before proposing their names for a Select Committee.
The bench asked the Attorney General for India R Venkataramani and Solicitor General Tushar Mehta to apprise it of the developments in the matter after the Diwali vacation.
Chadha’s counsel told the bench that he is the youngest member of the House and he had no problem in tendering the apology.

MPs gather for group photo ahead of Parliament session in new building

In the New Building of the Parliament on Tuesday, members of the Parliament gathered for a group photo before the Parliament session. Among the lawmakers present for the group photo were Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Vice President and Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar, Lok Sabha Chairman Om Birla, and others.

Before the photo session, Bharatiya Janata Party member of the Rajya Sabha Narhari Amin passed out. He had been sitting earlier, but his fellow lawmakers later gave him a seat. Starting today, the House’s proceedings will take place in the New Parliament Building. The Central Hall program, which will be held today at 11 AM in front of members of both the Rajya Sabha and the Lok Sabha, is currently being prepared at the old Parliament building.

The Central Hall of the former Parliament will host a celebration to “commemorate the rich legacy of the Parliament of India and resolve to make Bharat a developed Nation by 2047.” Prior to the special session of the Parliament in the new building, the security personnel at the Parliament building could also be seen wearing the new uniform. After a discussion on parliamentary democracy over the previous 75 years, both Houses adjourned on Monday. The presiding officers announced that the proceedings would resume on Tuesday afternoon in the new Parliament building.

Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar hoists national flag at new Parliament building

The national flag was raised at the new Parliament building on Sunday, the day before the start of the Special Session of Parliament, by Vice President and Chairman of the Rajya Sabha Jagdeep Dhankhar. Parliamentary proceedings during the Special Session will be held in the nearby new building instead of the older one, beginning on Monday.

On top of the new Parliament building’s “Gaja Dwar,” Dhankhar raised the flag. Om Birla, the speaker of the Lok Sabha, was also present. The Rajya Sabha Chairman called it a historic moment and said that epochal change is taking place in the nation. “This is a historic occasion. India is going through a historic change. The mighty power and contribution of Bharat are fully acknowledged by the world. We are living in a time of advancement and accomplishments that we never could have imagined,” Dhankhar said following the ceremony.

At the ceremony to raise the flag, Congress MPs Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury and Pramod Tiwari, as well as Union Ministers V Muraleedharan, Piyush Goyal, and Arjun Ram Meghwal, were also present. Mallikarjun Kharge, president of the Congress and leader of the opposition in the Rajya Sabha, announced on Saturday that he would be unable to attend the flag-raising ceremony and expressed disappointment at receiving the invitation “quite late.” He stated in a letter to Rajya Sabha Secretary General PC Mody that he only received the invitation to the event late on September 15 in the evening.

Vice-President Dhankhar condoles loss of lives in Bharatpur accident

Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar expressed his sorrow over the deaths that occurred in an accident on Wednesday morning in Bharatpur, his home state of Rajasthan. On the Jaipur-Agra highway in Bharatpur, a trailer plowed into a stopped bus at a high rate of speed, leaving 12 people dead and another 11 seriously hurt, according to the police. Dhankhar wrote, “Deeply saddened by the news of the tragic road accident in Bharatpur, Rajasthan,” on his official social media account, “X.” I offer my condolences to the families of the deceased and hope that everyone who was hurt will heal quickly. The bus was traveling from Bhavnagar, Gujarat, to Mathura, Uttar Pradesh.

The injured are undergoing treatment at a hospital in Bharatpur, the police said, adding that the bodies of the deceased were shifted to a mortuary.
President Droupadi Murmu, too, expressed grief over the incident.
“I am deeply saddened to learn of the devotees who perished in an accident in Bharatpur. I express my condolences to the bereaved families and pray for the speedy recovery of the injured,” President Murmu posted on X.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, too, condoled the loss of lives in the accident while announcing an ex-gratia of Rs 2 lakh each for the next of kin of the dead and Rs 50,000 each for the injured.

P Chidambaram appointed to Home panel , Eight Parliamentary Standing Committees re-constituted

Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar reconstituted eight department-related Parliamentary Standing Committees (DRSCs), including the appointment of senior Congress Rajya Sabha MP P Chidambaram to the 31-member Home panel, the Upper House of Parliament announced on Tuesday.

The Rajya Sabha Chairman appointed Chidambaram to the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Home Affairs at a time when the panel is debating three proposed bills that would replace the Indian Penal Code (IPC) 1860, the Indian Evidence Act, 1872, and the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC), respectively, as Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, Bharatiya Sakshya, and Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita. Union Home Minister Amit Shah introduced the three bills in the Parliament on August 11.

There are 24 DRSCs, or committees related to departments. These committees each have 31 members: 10 from the Rajya Sabha and 21 from the Lok Sabha. P Bhattacharya of the Congress left the position vacant, which led to P Chidambaram’s appointment. Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, a member of the party’s Lok Sabha delegation, is already on the Home panel, which is led by BJP MP Brij Lal.

A notification, dated August 28, issued by the Rajya Sabha, said, “The Chairman, Rajya Sabha, has in consultation with the Speaker, Lok Sabha, re-constituted the eight Department–related Parliamentary Standing Committees, coming under the administrative jurisdiction of the Chairman, Rajya Sabha, w.e.f. September 13, 2023, as follows.”
Apart from it, the Rajya Sabha Chairman also appointed Congress MP Jairam Ramesh as the chairman of the Committee on Science and Technology, Environment, Forests and Climate Change.
Meanwhile, the chairs of six major parliamentary committees — Home, IT, Defence, External Affairs, Finance and Health — are all with the BJP or its allies.

Monsoon session: Dhankhar holds meeting with Opposition leaders to end deadlock in House

In the midst of the Rajya Sabha’s disruptions over the Manipur issue and the Opposition’s demand for Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s statement in Parliament, Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar met with leaders of all Opposition parties on Friday to discuss the House’s proceedings next week.

After the meeting, Union Minister Piyush Goyal addressed a news conference and stated, “The Chairman has suggested that this logjam be broken through proper discussion.”

He further added that “the chairman emphasised that the Parliament should function properly through dialogue, debate and discussion. It is a forum to discuss public issues…He suggested that this logjam should be ended through proper discussion. Everyone should participate for the proper functioning of the Parliament.”

The meeting was an attempt to reach out to the opposition in order to restore normalcy and allow the House to function.

Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar has directed that all leaders relay the chairman’s message to their respective top leadership and make a sensible choice within two or three days.

“Chairman was very upset and emotional about the way one member behaved in the House during the proceeding,” Goyal added.

Amarendra Dhari Singh, an MP from Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) who attended the meeting, told the news agency that, “We had the meeting with the Chairman, and its a long discussion meeting and he heard all of us and he appealed with due respect to all the members for smooth functioning of the House.”

Vice President Dhankar to inaugurate 83rd All India Presiding Officers’ Conference

Vice President and Rajya Sabha chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar will address the inaugural session of the 83rd All India Presiding Officers’ Conference in Jaipur on January 11.

AIPOC, which completed its 100 years in 2021 is the apex body of the Legislatures in India. The 83rd session will focus on themes of contemporary relevance in its day-long discussions. A discussion on the leadership of India in G-20 as the “mother of democracy” will also be held.

One of the conference’s key themes is the integration of State legislatures with Digital Parliament.
Further, there will be a discussion on the need to maintain a harmonious relationship between the Legislature and the Judiciary in accordance with the spirit of the Constitution. The need to make Parliament and Legislature more effective will also be addressed.

Opposition parties walk out from Rajya Sabha

“They (China) are encroaching on our land. If we don’t discuss this issue then what else should we discuss? We are ready for discussion on this issue in the House,” LoP in Rajya Sabha said.

However, Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar rejected the demand of the opposition and asked MPs to not convert it into a classroom. Even after staging a walkout from the house, the Chairman continued the Zero Hour.

After this, a press conference was held outside the House and attacked the government. RJD leader Manoj Jha said, “We don’t have doubt about the capacity of the Indian Army but your (government) diplomacy is completely failed.”

“Why Modi ji’s government is fleeing away from holding a discussion on India-China border clash issue?” AAP leader Sanjay Singh asked the question.

Day 1 of parliament winter session: All about the bills to be taken up for discussion

The first day of the winter session of Parliament has commenced today, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi officiating Vice President Jagdeep Dhankar as the chairman of the Rajya Sabha. Slated to continue until 29 December, the winter session will be held for 17 days.

In these 17 days, about 16 bills will be taken up for discussion and debate. These include the Trade Marks (Amendment) Bill, 2022, the Geographical Indications of Goods (Registration and Protection) (Amendment) Bill, 2022; and the Repealing and Amending Bill, 2022, among others.
The Trade Marks (Amendment) Bill deals with the Madrid Registration System and aims to provide a one-stop solution to enterprises for registering their trade-marks and protecting their brands in multiple countries.

Another bill that is expected to be tabled is the Geographical Indications of Goods (Registration and Protection) (Amendment) Bill, 2022, that seeks to simplify some of the procedures in order to be more accessible to all stakeholders.

The North East Water Management Authority Bill, 2022, as the name suggests, seeks to create a new entity, the North East Water Management Authority (NEWMA), by dissolving the existing statutory body, i.e., the Brahmaputra Board.

One of the important bills to be introduced would be the Repealing and Amending Bill, 2022, which will seek to repeal redundant and obsolete laws.

Anti-Maritime Piracy Bill, 2019, which was introduced in Lok Sabha on 9 December 2019 is also slated to be discussed in the parliament in this winter session. The bill seeks to set up domestic anti-maritime piracy legislation in line with the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) and provide the necessary legal framework for the prosecution of persons for piracy-related crimes committed beyond the territorial jurisdiction of India.

Day 1 of winter session of parliament: PM Modi urges parties to add value to discussions

The winter session of the Parliament will begin today with a total of 17 days. Vice President Jagdeep Dhankar will preside over the session for the first time as the Chairman of the Rajya Sabha.

On the agenda would be 16 news bills, which will be tabled by the BJP-led Central government. These 16 bills would include data protection bill, banking act, insolvency law, competition commission act among others. Some of these bills have already been introduced in the parliament and will be taken up for discussion.

Urging all the political parties to engage in fruitful discussions, PM Modi said, “In this session, efforts will be made to take important decisions while keeping in mind taking the country to new heights of development and new opportunities to take the country forward amid current global situation. I’m confident that all parties will add value to discussions.”

“I urge leaders of all political parties and all floor Leaders that we give more and more opportunities to the first-time MPs, the new MPs, the young MPs for their bright future and to prepare the future generation of democracy and that their participation in discussions increase,” he added.

Vice President Jagdeep Dhankar to officiate on Rajya Sabha’s Chair amid Winter session

The first day of the winter session of Parliament began on Wednesday, as Prime Minister Narendra Modi welcomed Vice President Jagdeep Dhankar to officiate as Rajya Sabha Chair.

Jagdeep Dhankhar, the newly elected vice president, is serving as the Rajya Sabha chair for the first time. At the opening address in the Parliament, PM Modi said, “I congratulate the chairman on behalf of this house as well as the nation. You have reached this stage while going ahead in life amid struggles, it’s an inspiration for several people in the country. You are gracing this august post in the House.”
“Our Vice President is a Kisan Putra, and he studied at a Sainik school. Thus, he is closely associated with Jawans and Kisans,” he added.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi stated that receiving the G20 Presidency for India is a big opportunity on Wednesday, just prior to the opening of the Winter Session of Parliament.

Addressing media persons before the start of the first day of the Winter Session of Parliament, PM Modi said, “It’s the first day of Winter Session. This session is important because we met before August 15th. 75 years of independence were completed on August 15th, and we are going ahead in Azadi ka Amrit Kaal. We are meeting at a time when India has received the opportunity to preside over the G20.”
“The manner in which India has made a space in the global community, the manner in which expectations with India have risen, and the manner in which India is increasing its participation on the global platform, at a time like this, India receiving the G20 Presidency is a huge opportunity,” PM Modi said.
“This G20 Summit is not only a diplomatic event, but it is also an opportunity to showcase India’s capability to the world. Such a large country, the mother of democracy, with such diversity and capability-it’s an opportunity for the world to know India and for India to show its capability to the world,” he added.

An intergovernmental meeting of the world’s leading developed and emerging economies is known as the G20 or Group of 20. On December 1, India formally took over G20 presidency.

At the Bali summit last month, Indonesia transferred the G20 chairmanship to India in the presence of Prime Minister Modi.

Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, Japan, the Republic of Korea, Mexico, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Turkey, the United Kingdom, the United States, and the European Union make up this group.

On Wednesday, the Parliament’s winter session will get underway. There will be a total of 17 working days in the session.

The winter session of Parliament will have 16 new measures on the agenda of the BJP-led central government.

VP Dhankhar inaugurates exhibition on “Historical and Cultural Heritage of Tripura” in Agartala

Lauding the rich culture of Tripura Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar complimented the state on its numerous achievements in the field of education.

Earlier, Vice President Dhankhar inaugurated an exhibition on “Historical and Cultural Heritage of Tripura” and presided over a seminar on “New Horizon of Educational Development in Tripura. The exhibition was inaugurated at Maharaja Bir Bikram College in Agartala.

Tamil Nadu CM MK Stalin to visit Delhi; likely to meet President Murmu, PM Modi

Dalai Lama congratulates newly-elected Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar

Tibetan spiritual leader the Dalai Lama extended his congratulatory wishes to newly-elected Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar on Monday.

‘Today, the international community is becoming ever more aware of the leadership role that India can play in contributing to the peace and development of all humanity. With your long and rich experience of public service, I am sure you will be able to serve this great nation and its people with success,” Dalai Lama wrote in his letter.

Dalai Lama said India is the land of ‘ahimsa’ and ‘karuna’, ideas that contribute much to the flourishing of humanity.

Lama further said, “Over the years, India has taken great strides in many fields, especially in science and technology. As someone who has lived here for most of my life, I consider myself very much part of Indian society. It is auspicious that you are taking up this position on the occasion of the 75th anniversary of India’s independence.”

Moreover, Dalai Lama praised the traditional techniques of mental training which include Yoga and meditation in India.

“I am proud to say that ancient India is the source of an understanding of the mind and emotions – as well as of its traditional techniques of mental training, such as meditation and yoga – that can be of benefit to all human beings, both now and in the future,” Lama said.

The 14th Dalai Lama expressed his commitment to creating awareness of this treasure.

“India is uniquely well-positioned to combine these essential bodies of knowledge. I am aware that such initiatives have begun in several states, and I very much hope that they will grow across the nation,” Lama added.

Meanwhile, Dhankhar won the election by 346 votes. Dhankhar got 528 votes and opposition candidate Margaret Alva got 182 votes.

However, on 11 August, the new Vice-President of the country will take the oath. A day prior on 10 August the term of Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu ends.

Vice Presidential elections polling to be held today

Voting for the Vice Presidential elections will be held today as the tenure of M. Venkaiah Naidu comes to an end on 10 August 2022. The voting procedure will take place between 10 am to 5 pm. The votes will be counted immediately after the elections and the results will be declared by late Saturday evening.
The candidate for the vice-presidential position is elected through an electoral college consisting of members from both houses.
National Democratic Alliance’s vice-presidential candidate Jagdeep Dhankhar and the Opposition’s candidate Margaret Alva are two contesting candidates for election.
Dhankhar filed his nomination papers on 18 July. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, BJP chief J.P. Nadda, Union Minister Amit Shah, Rajnath Singh, and Nitin Gadkari were present when Dhankhar filed his nomination.
Dhankhar joined politics in 1989 and is a lawyer by profession. He joined the office as the governor of West Bengal in July 2019.
On the other hand, Alva filed her nomination for the vice presidential elections on 19 July. The decision to select Alva as the candidate was taken at a meeting of the Opposition leaders of 17 parties at the residence of NCP supremo Sharad Pawar.
Alva is the former Rajasthan Governor, Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) announced to support Opposition candidate Margaret Alva for the vice-presidential elections.

Vice Presidential Poll: Opposition’s candidate Margaret Alva files nomination

Opposition’s Vice Presidential candidate Margaret Alva filed her nomination on Tuesday in the Parliament House complex. During her nomination, Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi, Mallika Arjun Kharge, NCP chief Sharad Pawar and many senior opposition leaders were present.

There was a meeting of opposition parties at NCP chief Sharad Pawar’s home last Sunday, after which Sharad Pawar announced the name of Margaret Alva for the Vice Presidential elections. “We have unanimously decided to field Margaret Alva as our joint candidate for the Vice President.”

Shrimat Alva has been the former governor of Rajasthan, Uttarakhand, Goa, Gujarat and has held several ministries in the central government. She has also been a minister and a Member of Parliament five times, and Alva also held the post of Deputy Speaker of Rajya Sabha.

Meanwhile, the ruling BJP has nominated Jagdeep Dhankar, the Governor of West Bengal, as its Vice Presidential candidate. On Monday, in the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi Jagdeep Dhankar filed his nomination.

After filing the nomination, Dhankar said, “Not even in my dreams did I think that a common man like me would be given such an opportunity. A farmer’s son has filed his nomination today… Grateful to PM Modi and the leadership for this opportunity.”

However, the term of Vice President Venkaiah Naidu will end on August 10, 2022. The Vice Presidential elections will be held on August 6, 2022.

NDA names Bengal Governor Jagdeep Dhankar as Vice President candidate

In the BJP Parliamentary Board meeting, there was brainstorming about the next Vice Presidential candidate of the country. On Saturday, BJP President JP Nadda has announced the name of Jagdeep Dhankhar as the Vice Presidential candidate.
