</excerpt>

West Asia, a continent influenced by more than a dozen significant post-WWII wars, descended into chaos once again as Israel-Iran tensions boiled over into all-out war. This most recent conflict validated the combustible cocktail of outside, regional, and internal pressures driving instability in the region.

The genesis of this conflict lies in the 1979 Islamic Revolution. For decades, Iran adopted an approach of fighting proxy wars but refraining from open confrontation with Israel. That came crashing down on June 13, 2025, when Israel attacked Operation ‘Rising Lion.’ Designed to stop Iran’s nuclear plans and forestall what Israel referred to as an “existential threat,” Israel conducted enormous air strikes on about 100 targets, including the nuclear sites at Fordow, Natanz, and Isfahan.

Early Israeli Strikes Weaken Iran’s Defence Infrastructure

Surprised, Iran took a crushing hit, losing close to 15% of its missile capability as well as some crucial air defence facilities. The strike also eliminated a number of top Iranian military leaders. Although Iran retaliated the following day with drone and missile attacks on Israeli soil, it had no air cover. Nevertheless, some of Iran’s hypersonic missiles penetrated Israel’s air defence infrastructure and inflicted damage on the infrastructure.

While Israel controlled the air and wrought havoc on Iranian military bases, the economic cost of a long war became unsustainable. The war was costing Tel Aviv several hundred million dollars each day. Iran, still possessing a huge arsenal of missiles, seemed better equipped for a long war.

US Joins the War: Operation ‘Mid Night Hammer’

On the 22nd of June, the conflict increased as America joined the battleground. As part of Operation ‘Mid Night Hammer,’ the US launched seven B-2 jets to target Iranian nuclear sites with GBU-57 bunker-buster bombs. The mission was a success, President Donald Trump announced, saying that “all three nuclear sites had been completely obliterated.”

Iran responded symbolically by attacking the US airbase in Al Udeid, Qatar, with missiles. The attack, though, did not cause any casualties or destruction.

Trump Facilitates Ceasefire With Qatar’s Intervention

The following day, Trump declared a gradual ceasefire between Israel and Iran facilitated by Qatar. Despite some minor truce breaches, the ceasefire formally came into operation on June 24 and continues to date. Diplomatic talks have now shifted focus to likely negotiations soon to resume.

Both Countries Declare Victory in Sustained Heavy Losses

As expected, each side declared victory. Iran declared a “national victory against the Jewish regime and America.” Israel, on its part, claimed it had achieved all its military objectives and “killed hundreds of terrorists in Iran.” The Israeli foreign ministry went one step further, declaring that the war brought Israel into the “ranks of the world’s leading powers.”

In fact, Israel gave a serious blow to Iran’s nuclear pursuits with the assistance of Americans and proved its capability to reach deep inside Iranian borders. According to Israeli Ambassador Joshua Zarka, “14 key Iranian nuclear scientists were killed.” Iran’s Health Ministry announced 627 citizens dead and 4,870 injured from Israeli attacks.

Iran’s Response Still Hit Israeli Infrastructure

Even without air cover, Iran was able to cause extensive damage. Iranian missiles targeted large hits on Haifa port, Ben Gurion airport, and military installations, causing 29 Israeli fatalities and 3,461 casualties. The psychological affect on Israeli civilians was huge. Iran’s ally militias—Hamas, Houthis, and Hezbollah—were still largely inactivity, their power much weakened by years of Israeli operations.

Global Response: US Acts, Allies Hold Back

While the US openly supported Israel, Iran allies Russia and China only provided diplomatic backing. Moscow urged restraint and proposed mediation, while Beijing advocated for dialogue, aspiring to present itself as a balanced peace negotiator. Fears of an impending oil crisis also propelled Gulf states such as Qatar and Oman to bring about ceasefire efforts at high speed.

The Muslim world demonstrated unmistakable signs of disintegration, for most Arab countries were more concerned with their national agendas than with regional cohesion. Most interestingly, Gulf states seemed to have limited autonomy in making foreign policy choices.

A Multipolar West Asia Emerges

The post-war situation heralds a strategic realignment in West Asia. The US is likely to enhance its security guarantees to Israel and Gulf partners. China is likely to expand its mediation role while aligning with Russia to counterbalance regional power. Russia can pursue a two-stage game—arming Iran while cultivating ties with Israel and Arab countries.

Turkey is still ready to exert regional leadership by projecting itself as a stabilizer and expanding its leverage in Iraq and Syria.

For India, staying in active mode is important. Instability in the region threatens key initiatives such as the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEEC) and the Chabahar Port.

What Lies Ahead: A Fragile Peace and Armed Vigilance

In the future, a new security order appears to be on the horizon. Israel and Iran could enter an era of mutual deterrence, supported by precision missile systems. Iran would not give up its nuclear aspirations and still has its potential to activate proxy forces. The Gulf states might develop regional missile defence systems and closer defence cooperation with the US and Israel. In the meantime, the Abraham Accords could expand, drawing more countries but diluting the Palestinian cause.

The potential for weaponisation of energy hubs and militarisation of sea lanes, particularly in the Red Sea, still exists. The global community will avert this by means of energy diversification policies.

Like all the great wars, the “12-Day War” is left with broken lives and fresh geopolitical realities. The regional scenario is to become multipolar, with world powers and regional players rechannelling tactics in a fragile and highly competitive world. With identity politics and open conflicts intervening, eternal peace in West Asia continues to be a utopian fantasy.

Markets stabilised following Trump’s announcement confirming the truce.
</excerpt>

After two weeks of rising tensions and surging energy costs, oil prices plunged on Tuesday as Israel agreed to a ceasefire with Iran. The price of Brent crude, a key international benchmark, tumbled below $67 per barrel before rebounding slightly later in the day. Investors welcomed signs of de-escalation, especially after US President Donald Trump announced the ceasefire on social media and urged Israel to hold back from further military action.

The truce follows intense concern that Iran could shut down the Strait of Hormuz, a critical oil shipping route, amid retaliatory attacks. Trump posted that the ceasefire was “now in effect,” and Israel soon confirmed its agreement, helping restore calm to volatile markets. The decision marks a dramatic shift after oil spiked as high as $81 per barrel during the missile exchanges, igniting fears over rising petrol and energy bills.

Oil Prices Stabilise After Wild Swings

Following the ceasefire announcement, oil prices began to stabilise across markets. Priyanka Sachdeva, senior analyst at Phillip Nova, noted that “if the ceasefire is followed as announced, investors might expect the return to normalcy in oil.” However, she cautioned that sustained peace would be essential, stating, “the extent to which Israel and Iran adhere to the recently announced ceasefire conditions will play a significant role in determining oil prices.”

Despite some recovery, Brent crude closed at $67.68—still below levels from before Israel’s strikes on Iran’s nuclear facilities began on June 13. The market’s reaction highlights ongoing fragility and investor uncertainty over future geopolitical flare-ups.

Markets React As Global Energy Fear Recedes

Global stock markets responded positively as oil prices cooled. The S&P 500, Dow Jones, and Nasdaq each climbed over 1%, while Germany’s DAX jumped 1.6%. The FTSE 100 held flat. In Asia, Japan’s Nikkei rose 1.1%. Meanwhile, wholesale UK gas prices fell by 17% after surging earlier, reflecting renewed optimism about energy stability. Still, tension remains after Israel accused Iran of breaching the ceasefire with another missile strike.

Energy experts warn that further escalations could reverse gains, especially with the Gulf’s vital role in oil and gas transport. For now, though, markets appear cautiously optimistic that this fragile ceasefire will hold.

</excerpt>

Ex-US President Donald Trump has asserted that an Israeli spy agent was on the ground as a strike occurred on Iran’s Fordow nuclear facility and witnessed personally its “complete destruction.” The sensational claim follows escalating tensions in the aftermath of the recent Israel-Iran conflict and comes amidst new scrutiny of Iran’s nuclear program.

Trump Asserts Spy Was on Ground at Time of Attack

In a public speech at the NATO gathering in the Netherlands, Trump accused Israel of having penetrated one of Iran’s most secure nuclear sites. “They inserted an individual in — an agent. He was there and observed it all. Total destruction,” Trump said of the claimed Israeli bombing of the Fordow nuclear facility near the city of Qom, according to Asia Times.

While Trump did not provide any immediate evidence to back the assertion, his revelation has already sparked new global controversy surrounding clandestine operations, nuclear security, and Israeli intelligence operations in the Middle East.

Fordow Strike: What We Know So Far

Previous accounts by Israeli media and American intelligence indicated that the Fordow nuclear facility — long regarded as a central part of Iran’s uranium enrichment program — had been badly damaged in a series of targeted attacks conducted during the 12-day war between Iran and Israel in June.

Although the Iranian regime has indicated that there was no devastating destruction at Fordow, satellite images and leaks from Western sources have suggested substantial structural damage. The plant, constructed deep underground, was perceived to be virtually invulnerable to air-based attacks.

No Confirmation Yet from Israel or Iran

Both the Israeli government and Iran’s leadership have thus far refused to comment on Trump‘s new assertions. Iranian officials had earlier, however, accused Israel of carrying out sabotage activities within their nuclear network.

Israeli officials, being close-mouthed about details of operations, have all along reiterated that they will not permit Iran to acquire a nuclear weapon. “We will do what we must,” was one of the senior Israeli security officials to comment last week, refusing to go into detail regarding Fordow.

US Intelligence Hesitant to Confirm Fordow Destruction

Although Trump argued that the site was “fully and completely obliterated,” an intelligence US analysis leaked earlier this week stated that Fordow’s enrichment capability had been “severely degraded,” but not fully destroyed. The report claimed Iran’s nuclear program had been delayed by “several months.”

Fordow’s Strategic Significance

The Fordow uranium enrichment plant, which was discovered by Western spies in 2009, is hidden within a mountain and was intended to protect Iran’s nuclear program from possible airstrikes. Ever since, it has been a central issue in nuclear talks and arms control negotiations between Iran and the West.

The Fordow facility has been utilized to enrich uranium to 60% purity by the IAEA — near weapons-grade level — which received sharp criticism from the US, Israel, and European powers.

Increasing Fears of Nuclear Escalation

Trump’s words come as Iran’s parliament recently approved legislation at a faster-than-usual pace that would suspend cooperation with the IAEA. Meanwhile, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has maintained that Iran will not be permitted to restore or increase its enrichment activities.

Analysts worry that the increased rhetoric and clandestine behavior could undermine ongoing backchannel diplomacy aimed at averting wider war across the region.

</excerpt>

United States President Donald Trump brokered a successful ceasefire between Israel and Iran following almost two weeks of heavy fighting. Within hours of the announcement, however, Iran fired a fresh barrage of missile attacks on Israeli towns, killing four individuals in Beersheba.

President Trump and his senior officials made intense diplomatic efforts during the weekend to halt the growing violence in the Middle East. While Trump called Netanyahu personally, his delegation, headed by Vice President JD Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, and special envoy Steve Witkoff, conducted negotiations with Iranian officials.

Trump gave explicit orders, according to a White House official, the official said, “Let’s get on the phone with the Iranians,” quoting. “Get me Bibi. We’re going to make peace.”

Reuters had earlier reported that the US delegation had already held five rounds of talks with Iran before the outbreak of the conflict, although negotiations broke down over Tehran’s demand to continue uranium enrichment. Following the US airstrikes targeting Iran’s nuclear facilities, Washington stepped up diplomatic action to avoid further escalation.

Ceasefire Terms and Immediate Violation

The high-ranking White House official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, added that Israel consented to the ceasefire so long as Iran did not launch new missiles. Concurrently, Iran also signaled that it would suspend attacks, prompting Trump to officially declare the ceasefire in early Tuesday morning (Monday night local time).

Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi also said the ceasefire was confirmed, indicating, “Iranian forces fought till the very end at 4 am on Tuesday.”

Iran Fires Missiles After Ceasefire

While announcing the formal ceasefire, Iran fired six missiles immediately after Trump’s statement. Air raid sirens sounded throughout Israel as civilians took refuge, and several intercepts were reported.

But one missile hit an apartment complex in Beersheba, killing four individuals and wounding several others. Israel’s emergency medical team verified the fatalities, heightening tensions within the region.

The violence following the ceasefire has raised questions as to the strength of the agreement, despite attempts by all parties to claim diplomatic victories. The White House has yet to make a statement in response to the Iranian missile attacks that broke out after the announcement of the truce.

“No End In Sight”: Israel Vows Relentless Strikes, Iran Warns Of Wider War

<excerpt>As Israel intensifies strikes on Iran, vowing to eliminate its nuclear threat, European leaders push for diplomacy while Iran warns against aggression and rules out talks amid ongoing attacks.
</excerpt>

Israel announced on Friday that its military campaigns against Iran will continue until Iran’s nuclear program is completely dismantled, heightening tensions as each side exchanged new attacks in the conflict.

Addressing a United Nations Security Council gathering, Israeli UN Ambassador Danny Danon stated, “We will not stop not until Iran’s nuclear threat is dismantled, its war machine disarmed, and both our people and yours are safe.”

Iran’s UN envoy, Amir Saeid Iravani, called for intervention by the Security Council. He was alarmed at reports that the United States could become involved in the war, and said, “Israel has said it will keep striking indefinitely. We are gravely concerned by reports indicating possible US intervention.

In the meantime, US President Donald Trump announced he would make a decision within two weeks on whether to militarily attack Iran. The action would include precision attacks against Iran’s highly fortified Fordo nuclear site using “bunker-buster” bombs.

Regardless of continued attempts by European leaders to re-engage diplomacy, Israeli warplanes attacked Iranian military targets on Friday, including missile production sites. Iran fought back with new missile attacks on Israel’s northern city of Haifa, injuring 19 individuals.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, en route to Geneva for talks, said there would be no negotiations with the US while Israeli attacks continued. “We have received multiple messages from Washington, but we’ve made it clear no talks under aggression,” Araghchi said on Iranian state television.

French President Emmanuel Macron indicated European diplomats would make Iran a formal proposal to restore the 2015 nuclear accord. In that accord, Iran restricted uranium enrichment and opened up to inspections in return for the lifting of sanctions a deal the US withdrew from in 2018.

Since the war broke out on June 13, 657 Iranians, 263 of them civilians, have been killed. Iran has fired more than 450 missiles and 1,000 drones, while Israeli losses are 24 dead and hundreds injured.

Soroka Hospital suffers major damage from Iran’s missile strike.
</excerpt>

Israel and Iran are at alarmingly high levels of tension, but the Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu made a surprising remark that has drawn even more attention and backlash.

When Netanyahu abruptly turned the attention to his family’s hardships while standing outside a bombed hospital, it caused resentment at a time when many Israelis are grieving the growing conflict.

Netanyahu Makes A Remark Amid Hospital Strike

The controversy erupted after Iran fired missiles and drones at Israel, with one striking Soroka Hospital in Be’er Sheva. The strike damaged the hospital’s entrance and several departments, including the ophthalmology unit on the third floor. Netanyahu stood at the site and addressed the media, drawing a historical comparison by saying, “We are going through a Blitz,” referencing Britain’s resilience during WWII.

He then described the impact on his own family, revealing that his son Avner’s wedding faced a second delay due to the escalating conflict. He added that his wife, Sara, whom he called “a hero,” and his son’s fiancée endured great disappointment. “There are people who were killed, families who grieved loved ones, I appreciate that,” Netanyahu said.

“Each of us bears a personal cost, and my family has not been exempt.” However, many Israelis viewed his remarks as insensitive and out of touch, given the growing casualties.

Israel-Iran War Escalates With Global Attention

Israel responded to the escalating tensions by attacking Iranian nuclear facilities. Iran retaliated by launching more drones and missiles. In a direct attack on Iran’s Supreme Leader, Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz stated, “The military has been instructed and knows that to achieve all of its goals, this man absolutely should not continue to exist.”

Meanwhile, global leaders continue to watch the situation closely. European officials urge Tehran to return to negotiations, while the White House announced that US President Donald Trump will decide within two weeks whether to intervene militarily in support of Israel.

Israel launched attacks last Friday, claiming that these strikes aim to stop Iran from building nuclear weapons, sparking the confrontation. However, Iran maintains that its nuclear program serves peaceful purposes.

</excerpt>

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stirred public outrage this week. He described the delay of his son’s wedding as a “personal cost” of the war with Iran. Many Israelis called the comment tone-deaf and self-centered, according to The Guardian.

He Speaks at a Bombed Hospital

Netanyahu made the statement while standing in front of Soroka Hospital in Be’er Sheva. An Iranian missile had struck the hospital the day before. While addressing the media, he compared Israel’s current crisis to Britain’s World War II experience. “It reminds me of the British people during the Blitz. We are going through a Blitz,” he said.

He Highlights Family Sacrifices

To connect with the public, Netanyahu shared his own family’s struggles. He mentioned that his son Avner’s wedding had been postponed for a second time due to security threats. He said the situation had affected not only his son but also his son’s fiancée and his wife, Sara. “There are people who were killed, families who grieved loved ones, I really appreciate that,” Netanyahu said. “Each of us bears a personal cost, and my family has not been exempt.” He also praised his wife, saying, “Sara is a hero.”

Public Reaction Is Swift and Harsh

Soon after his comments, backlash spread quickly across social media and political circles. Critics accused Netanyahu of focusing on his personal inconvenience while the nation faces real pain.

So far, Israeli officials have confirmed 24 civilian deaths due to the conflict. In contrast, human rights groups in the U.S. estimate that Israeli airstrikes have killed at least 263 Iranian civilians.

Reports of Wedding Plans Spark More Anger

Public frustration grew when reports revealed Netanyahu might still attend the rescheduled wedding on Monday. The event was originally planned for November but was delayed due to earlier unrest. Despite ongoing fighting and planned protests, Netanyahu appeared ready to move forward with the celebration.

Families of Hostages Speak Out

Anat Angrest, whose son has been held hostage in Gaza since October 2023, expressed her pain in a social media post. “I’ve been in the hellish dungeons of Gaza for 622 days now,” she wrote on X.

Lawmakers Join the Criticism

Opposition leaders condemned Netanyahu’s remarks. Gilad Kariv, a Democratic Knesset member, called him a “borderless narcissist.” “I know many families who were not forced to postpone a wedding, but who will now never celebrate the weddings that were once meant to take place,” Kariv said.

He also pushed back against Netanyahu’s praise for his wife. “The doctors who leave home for night shifts are the heroes. The teachers who keep our children together on Zoom and phone calls are the heroes.”

Journalists Add Their Voice

Journalist Amir Tibon also criticized the prime minister. He said Netanyahu often focuses on his image, even in difficult moments. “But there are no surprises with Netanyahu,” Tibon said. “Even in moments when a personal example is most needed, he is first and foremost concerned with himself.”

The strike caused damage but no casualties, raising global concern.
</excerpt>

Israel accused Iran of firing cluster munitions in a missile attack during the current war, the first time such so-called controversial weapons were reported used in the seven-day war. An Iranian missile released several smaller submunitions over the middle of Israel, seeking to cause maximum civilian damage, the Israeli military said.

Soldiers declared the warhead of the missile exploded at about 7 kilometers (about 4 miles) above ground, scattering about 20 submunitions over a broad area of about 8 kilometers (5 miles). One of the bomblets actually struck a residential house in Azor, a central Israeli town, resulting in property loss. No one was hurt, however.

Brigadier General Effie Defrin, IDF spokesperson, blamed Iran for seeking to cause widespread civilian casualties. “The terror regime intends to cause harm to civilians and employed weapons with extensive dispersal in order to expand the reach of damage,” he told a press conference.

Cluster bombs are universally deplored for their indiscriminate effect and lengthy danger, since unexploded submunitions may remain dangerous for years following the end of combat. The Israeli army issued a graphic warning to the public regarding the dangers of unexploded ordnance after the event.

Daryl Kimball, Executive Director of the Arms Control Association, underlined the risk of cluster weapons being used in populated areas, adding that they stand a better chance of killing civilians than striking military targets, particularly considering the Iranian missiles lack of accuracy.

Neither Iran’s United Nations delegation nor Israel’s embassy in Washington returned a request for comment.

Iran and Israel are not signatories to the 2008 Convention on Cluster Munitions, which prohibits the use, transfer, and storage of cluster munitions. Other non-signatory countries, such as the United States, Russia, and Ukraine, have used cluster bombs despite international condemnation.

UAE warns against reckless steps as it urges calm in the region.
</excerpt>

As tensions escalate between Israel and Iran, the United Arab Emirates has called for restraint, warning that reckless actions could destabilize the wider region.

High-Level Diplomatic Talks

UAE President Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan spoke by phone with Iran’s newly elected President Masoud Pezeshkian, according to a report by the Emirati state news agency WAM. The two leaders discussed the Israeli airstrikes that hit key sites in Iran, including a strike on the Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting (IRIB) building in Tehran on June 17, 2025.

UAE’s Message of Caution and Peace

UAE Foreign Minister Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed issued a strong warning against “uncalculated and reckless steps,” cautioning that such actions could spill over beyond Israel and Iran. The statement from the UAE Foreign Ministry underlined the country’s concern over rising instability in the region.

Efforts to De-escalate

President Sheikh Mohammed stated that the UAE is actively engaged in talks with various concerned parties to de-escalate the conflict. He also expressed solidarity with the people of Iran during these difficult times.

Regional Context

In recent years, the UAE has worked to rebuild diplomatic ties with Iran after a period of tension. At the same time, the Gulf nation normalized relations with Israel in 2020 through the Abraham Accords, balancing its regional diplomacy carefully.

</excerpt>

With the escalation of the Israeli-Iran conflict, Chinese President Xi Jinping urged restraint and presented China’s solidarity in instilling regional peace. While addressing Kazakhstan during the China-Central Asia Summit, Xi voiced serious concern regarding escalating tensions after the Israeli airstrikes on Iranian military and nuclear sites.

“Both sides need to move quickly to de-escalate and prevent further deterioration,” Xi said according to Xinhua. “China is willing to contribute to peace and stability in the Middle East.”

During his meeting with Uzbek President Shavkat Mirziyoyev, Xi condemned recent Israeli military operations, saying that these operations undermine regional security. “We oppose infringements on national sovereignty. Military solutions are not the answer,” he further added.

In the wake of threats of wider conflict, China has begun evacuating Chinese citizens from both Iran and Israel. Foreign Ministry spokesman Guo Jiakun confirmed on Tuesday that Chinese citizens were being relocated to neighboring countries but gave no details.

“The security of Chinese citizens is our priority,” declared Guo at the press conference. Both governments were urged by him to protect Chinese nationals and facilitate evacuation.

China’s response is coupled with increasing global alarm. The G7, convening in Canada, demanded de-escalation in the region within a matter of hours and reiterated Israel’s right to defend itself while cautioning against Iranian nuclear aspirations.

At the same time, US President Donald Trump departed the G7 summit early after calling for the evacuation of Tehran and putting pressure on Iran to agree to a nuclear deal.

China rebuked inciting language in retaliation, threatening that threats would only heighten the situation more.

Foreign Minister Wang Yi denounced Israel’s move as against international law and reaffirmed China’s appeal for dialogue. On Tuesday, China’s embassy in Israel called on citizens to leave through Jordan because of the prolonged state of emergency and shut airspace.

IDF claims he was Iran’s most senior military commander.
</excerpt>

Amid the escalating Israel-Iran tensions, the Israeli Defence Force (IDF) on Tuesday, June 17, reported that it had assassinated Major General Ali Shadmani, Iran’s freshly appointed head of the Khatam-al Anbiya Central Headquarters. The Israeli military reportedly carried out the targeted attack in Tehran, delivering another blow to Iran’s highest military command.

Shadmani’s assassination came just four days after Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei had appointed him to replace Lt. Gen. Gholamali Rashid, who was also killed in an Israeli strike.

“Given Lt. Gen. Gholamali Rashid’s martyrdom at the hands of the vile Zionist regime, and in light of Major General Ali Shadmani’s meritorious services & valuable experience, I confer the rank of Major Gen. & appoint him Commander of the Khatam al-Anbiya (pbuh) Central HQ,” Khamenei had announced on X.

IDF: Shadmani Was Iran’s Senior-most Military Leader

The IDF identified Ali Shadmani as Iran’s most senior military commander, calling him the “war chief of staff” and the closest figure to the Iranian Supreme Leader. “He commanded both the Revolutionary Guards and the Iranian Armed Forces,” the Israeli military stated.

According to the IDF, Shadmani was in charge of Iran’s military command structure through the Khatam-al Anbiya HQ and played a key role in managing combat operations. “In his various roles, he had a direct influence on Iran’s offensive plans targeting the State of Israel,” the statement added.

G7 Backs Israel’s Right to Self-Defence

The strike came shortly after world leaders attending the 2025 G7 Summit issued a statement supporting Israel’s right to self-defence amid the escalating conflict. The joint declaration, published by host country Canada, read:
“We, the leaders of the G7, reiterate our commitment to peace and stability in the Middle East. In this context, we affirm that Israel has a right to defend itself. We reiterate our support for the security of Israel.”

Key Iranian military leaders continue to fall as tensions mount, locking both nations in their most direct and deadly confrontation in decades.

Talks are off, air defenses activated, and casualties are mounting on both sides.
</excerpt>

Israel and Iran attacked each other for a fifth straight day on Tuesday, and US President Donald Trump urged Iranians to evacuate Tehran, citing what he said was the country’s rejection of a deal to curb nuclear weapons development. Trump was due to leave the Group of Seven summit in Canada later on Monday, a day early, due to the Middle East situation, the White House said. Fox News reported he would convene his National Security Council. French President Emmanuel Macron said Trump’s early departure was positive, given the immediate objective was to get Israel and Iran to agree to a ceasefire.

“Iran should have signed the ‘deal’ I told them to sign. What a shame, and waste of human life. Simply stated, IRAN CAN NOT HAVE A NUCLEAR WEAPON. I said it over and over again! Everyone should immediately evacuate Tehran!” Trump wrote on his Truth Social media platform.

Iranian media soon reported explosions and heavy air defence fire in Tehran early on Tuesday. Air defences were activated also in Natanz, home to key nuclear installations 320 km (200 miles) away, the Asriran news website reported.

In Israel, air raid sirens wailed in Tel Aviv after midnight, and an explosion was heard as Iranian missiles targeted the country again.

Iranian officials reported 224 deaths, mostly civilians, in five days, while Israel said 24 civilians had been killed. Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich said nearly 3,000 Israelis had been evacuated due to damage from Iranian strikes.

Sources told Reuters that Tehran had asked Oman, Qatar, and Saudi Arabia to urge Trump to pressure Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to agree to an immediate ceasefire. In return, Iran would show flexibility in nuclear negotiations, according to two Iranian and three regional sources.

“If President Trump is genuine about diplomacy and interested in stopping this war, next steps are consequential,” Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi said on X. “Israel must halt its aggression, and absent a total cessation of military aggression against us, our responses will continue.”

Netanyahu told reporters on Monday that Israel was committed to eliminating threats posed by Iran’s nuclear and ballistic missile programs, adding, “If this can be achieved in another way-fine. But we gave it a 60-day chance.”

Speaking to Reuters on Friday, the first day of Israel’s assault, Trump said he had given the Iranians 60 days to come to an agreement to halt uranium enrichment and that the time had expired with no deal.

Oil prices rallied more than 2% early in Asia on Tuesday after Trump’s evacuation warning, reversing losses on Monday amid reports that Iran was seeking an end to hostilities.

Chinese Urged To Leave Israel

With security concerns growing and Israeli airspace closed because of the war, the Chinese embassy in Israel urged Chinese citizens to leave the country via land border crossings as soon as possible.

The Iran-Israel air war – the biggest battle ever between the two longtime enemies – escalated on Monday with Israel targeting Iran’s state broadcaster and uranium enrichment facilities.

Rafael Grossi, head of the International Atomic Energy Agency, told the BBC that the Natanz plant sustained extensive damage, likely destroying 15,000 centrifuges, while Iran’s Fordow plant remained largely intact.

Talks between the United States and Iran, hosted by Oman, had been scheduled for June 15 but were scrapped, with Tehran saying it could not negotiate while under attack.

Israel launched its air war with a surprise attack that has killed nearly the entire top echelon of Iran’s military commanders and its leading nuclear scientists. It says it now has control of Iranian airspace and intends to escalate the campaign in the coming days.

Trump has consistently said the Israeli assault could end quickly if Iran agreed to US demands that it accept strict curbs to its nuclear programme.

“As I’ve been saying, I think a deal will be signed, or something will happen, but a deal will be signed, and I think Iran is foolish not to sign,” Trump told reporters on the sidelines of the Group of Seven summit in Canada on Monday.

A U.S. official said Trump would not sign a draft statement from G7 leaders calling for a de-escalation of the conflict. The draft statement says Iran must never have a nuclear weapon and that Israel has the right to defend itself.

The drop comes amid Israel-Iran tensions and the upcoming US Federal Reserve policy decision.
</excerpt>

Gold prices fell in the domestic futures market on June 17 after hitting record highs in the previous session. The decline comes as investors booked profits while closely watching the growing conflict between Israel and Iran and awaiting the US Federal Reserve’s policy decision scheduled for June 18.

With political tensions escalating and markets bracing for the Fed’s stance on inflation and interest rates, uncertainty continues to weigh on gold prices.

Geopolitical Tensions Impact Gold Prices

On MCX, the August gold futures contract dropped 0.24% to ₹98,940 per 10 grams. This came after it had touched a record high of ₹1,01,078 per 10 grams in the previous session, ending that day with a 1% decline. The rising conflict between Israel and Iran continues to drive investor caution. US President Donald Trump cut short his G7 summit visit, demanding the immediate evacuation of Tehran.

Meanwhile, China warned that if the conflict spreads, the entire Middle East could suffer. “If the conflict between Israel and Iran continues to escalate or even spill over, the other countries in the Middle East will inevitably bear the brunt,” said Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Guo Jiakun.

Gold Prices Dip Across India Amid Conflict

On June 17, gold prices dropped to ₹99,960 per 10 grams, down from the previous day’s record high of ₹1,00,480, according to the Indian Bullion Association. This decline came amid rising tensions between Israel and Iran. Similar price drops were seen across major cities.

In New Delhi, gold fell to ₹99,610 per 10 grams from ₹1,00,130. Mumbai prices slipped to ₹99,780 from ₹1,00,300. In Kolkata, gold was priced at ₹99,650, while Bengaluru saw rates at ₹99,860. Chennai recorded the highest price at ₹1,00,070 per 10 grams.

US Federal Reserve Policy Decision

Aside from changes in geopolitics, investors are also keeping a careful eye on the US Federal Reserve’s imminent decision on monetary policy. The US Federal Reserve is the country’s central bank. The Fed is anticipated to maintain stable interest rates, although market sentiment may be affected by Jerome Powell’s comments about the economy and inflation.

Experts believe gold’s long-term outlook remains strong but advise caution at current price levels.”The advice is: booking partial profits if you are overweight or need cash,” said Renisha Chainani, the head of research at Augmont. For those underinvested, she recommends buying on dips through SIPs or digital gold.

Technical analysts provided key levels to watch. Rahul Kalantri from Mehta Equities pegged gold support at $3,380-$3,355 and resistance at $3,425-$3,442 per troy ounce. In rupee terms, gold support stands at ₹98,620-₹98,390, with resistance at ₹99,750-₹1,00,240.

Manoj Kumar Jain from Prithvifinmart Commodity Research sees MCX gold support at ₹98,550-₹97,700 and resistance at ₹99,800-₹1,00,400. For silver, he suggested buying on dips near ₹1,05,800 with a stop loss at ₹1,04,750 and a target of ₹1,07,000-₹1,07,700.

</excerpt>

As a response to increasing tensions between Israel and Iran, the Indian government has started shifting Indian students out of Tehran to the city of Qom, about 148 kilometers away. An official statement released early Monday announced that authorities would shift Indian nationals in affected areas to safety within Iran.

Over 1,500 Indian students, the majority of whom are from Jammu and Kashmir, are stranded in Iran. A majority of the students study in institutions like Shahid Beheshti University and Iran University of Medical Science.

India had officially asked the Iranian government to enable the safe evacuation of its citizens stranded in Israeli missile-strike hit cities. In response to the appeal, Tehran reaffirmed that while airspace remains shut, land borders are fully functional for the sake of evacuation.

Iran Responds with Evacuation Support

“Considering the current situation and the closure of Iran’s airports, and in response to many of the political missions’ requests to move their diplomats and nationals abroad, we announce that all borders are open for crossing,” Iran’s Foreign Ministry announced.

Iran also asked the Indian government to provide certain information like names, passport numbers, vehicle details, travel time, and desired exit border through its General Protocol Department for smooth evacuation as well as safe travel.

J&K Government and EAM Intervene on Iran Situation

On Sunday, in a proactive move, Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah spoke with External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar to seek an update and ensure the safety of the Union Territory’s students.

Imtisal Mohidin, a 22-year-old third-year MBBS student at Shahid Beheshti University, recounted the panic that broke out in Tehran, “I woke up at 2:30 am on Friday to loud explosions and ran to the basement. We haven’t slept since,” Mohidin said to ANI.

Military Escalation Continues

The movement is amidst Operation Rising Lion, Israel’s surprise operation initiated on Friday that attacked Iran’s highest-ranking military leaders and most important nuclear sites.

Iran responded by launching hundreds of missiles in a rocketing air war as the two countries threatened each other with further attacks. In response to the ongoing Israeli aggression, meanwhile, Iran has vowed to “open the gates of hell” as retaliation.

The shift, reportedly due to “an emergent operational requirement,” suggests a strategic military repositioning.
</excerpt>

In the midst of escalating hostilities between Israel and Iran, the US has shifted its aircraft carrier USS Nimitz from the South China Sea westwards. The move was made on Monday morning, as per a Reuters report based on Marine Traffic data, indicating a possible repositioning towards the Middle East.

The ship was set to make a port call to Danang City in central Vietnam this week. But two sources, one of whom was a diplomat told Reuters that the scheduled June 20 reception had been cancelled.

One source reported that the US Embassy in Hanoi told him that the cancellation was made because of what was termed “an emergent operational requirement.”

Only last week, the Nimitz Carrier Strike Group was engaging in maritime security operations in the South China Sea as part of routine US Navy presence in the Indo-Pacific, as reported on the website of the US Pacific Fleet.

After the cancellation of the Vietnam tour, Marine Traffic tracking information showed that the carrier had turned around and was headed west towards the Middle East, where tensions between Iran and Israel have increased over the past few days.

The conflict has already claimed hundreds of lives.
</excerpt>

In a major escalation of the Israel-Iran conflict, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) lost its top intelligence Chief, Mohammad Kazemi, and Deputy Hassan Mohaqiq following a targeted Israeli airstrike in Tehran on Sunday.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu confirmed the development, stating that Israel had successfully struck high-ranking Iranian officials.

Mohammad Kazemi Killed in Tehran Strike

The Israeli strike eliminated Brigadier General Mohammad Kazemi, the IRGC’s intelligence chief, along with his deputy, General Hassan Mohaqiq. Netanyahu confirmed their deaths during an interview with Fox News.

“Moments ago, I can tell you we got their chief intelligence officer and his deputy in Tehran,” he said.

Iran’s state-run news agency, IRNA, also confirmed the strike. Citing a statement from the Revolutionary Guards, it said, “Three intelligence generals, Mohammad Kazemi, Hassan Mohaghegh, and Mohsen Bagheri, were assassinated and fell as martyrs.”

Israeli Strikes Target Iranian Military Infrastructure

This airstrike is part of Israel’s broader military campaign dubbed ‘Operation Rising Lion’, which began on Friday. Israeli forces claim to have targeted key elements of Iran’s nuclear and military infrastructure. They describe it as a preemptive measure against Tehran’s perceived existential threat.

In response, Iran launched ‘Operation True Promise III’ late Friday, firing dozens of ballistic missiles at Israeli targets. The exchange has resulted in widespread devastation, leaving hundreds dead and thousands injured across the region.

High-Profile Losses in Iran’s Military Ranks

Just days before the latest strike, other top Iranian military figures were reportedly killed, including the Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces, Lieutenant General Mohammad Bagheri, and IRGC head General Hossein Salami. These targeted eliminations signal Israel’s strategic focus on dismantling Iran’s top military leadership.

Israel claims near-complete air dominance over Iranian skies as air raids continue into the third day. Meanwhile, Iran has vowed further retaliation. The Revolutionary Guard, a central pillar of Iran’s military power since the 1979 Islamic Revolution, now faces one of the most serious threats to its command structure in decades.

</excerpt>

Amid rising tensions between Israel and Iran, Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif found himself at the center of an unexpected social media storm, not for policy, but for a typo. While attempting to issue a formal condemnation of Israel’s airstrikes on Iran, a viral screenshot alleged that Sharif accidentally typed “I condom” instead of “I condemn” in a post on X (formerly Twitter).

The post reportedly read, “I condom the attack on Iran by Israel…”, triggering an avalanche of memes, GIFs, and internet jokes. The slip turned a geopolitical flashpoint into a global punchline. ‘I Condom’, Pakistan’s Prime Minister mistakenly wrote ‘condom’ instead of ‘condemn’ in the support of Iran. Later, he rectified it,” one user wrote, attaching the viral screenshot.

Interestingly, the original post could not be located, raising doubts about whether the typo was real or photoshopped. AI tool Grok, when asked to retrieve the deleted tweet, responded: “Yeah, it seems the typo was real. Pakistan’s PM meant to say ‘condemn’ but wrote ‘condom’ in a post about Israel’s attack on Iran.
Meanwhile, credible media outlets like Radio Pakistan and The Express Tribune confirmed that Shehbaz Sharif had officially used the correct term “condemn” in his statements on June 13, showing solidarity with Iran after the Israeli airstrikes that reportedly targeted nuclear facilities and killed senior military personnel.

</excerpt>

Israel-Iran tensions escalated on Saturday following deadly missile strikes on Jerusalem that killed three and injured dozens. In the aftermath of the attacks, Israel’s Defence Minister, Israel Katz, gave a threatening warning to Tehran, “Tehran will burn.”

The threat was issued following an urgent assessment meeting with Israel’s military chief of staff. “If (Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali) Khamenei continues to shoot missiles at the Israeli home front — Tehran will burn,” Katz stated. “Iran will pay a severe price for injuring Israeli citizens.”

Iran Retaliates with Missile and Drone Salvo again Israel

Within hours, Iran retaliated with successive waves of ballistic missiles and armed drones on major Israeli cities. Air raid sirens wailed in Jerusalem and Tel Aviv as lights filled the sky. A number of buildings rattled hard, compelling residents into shelters for hours.

Although Israel’s air defense systems downed most of the projectiles, a few resulted in major damage and casualties. Multiple injuries and property damage were reported in various areas by authorities.

This escalation is taking place amid the Israeli-Palestinian war in Gaza, which was ignited by the attacks of October 7 by Hamas. The recent attacks added to the climate of fear and uncertainty already engulfing Israeli society.

Netanyahu: We Will Eliminate Iranian Threat

On Friday, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu reinforced his government’s determination to neutralise any Iranian threat. “Israel is not actively seeking regime change in Tehran,” he said, “but we would certainly welcome it.”

Netanyahu also urged Iranian citizens to stand against their regime, saying the current leadership poses a threat not only to Israel but to the region at large.

Fear of Full-Scale Regional War Grows

The two countries have signaled that military action is imminent. Diplomats from world powers have yet to dampen the violence. Experts are cautioning that the conflict could escalate into a full-blown war if either side does not retreat.

While the world waits with bated breath for possible escalations, the global community insists on restraint — but with limited success on the ground.

</excerpt>

In a dramatic pre-dawn action on Friday, Israel conducted ‘Operation Rising Lion’, which hit Iran’s nuclear facilities directly, including the very sensitive Natanz enrichment plant. The attack comes amidst heightened tensions over Tehran’s uranium enrichment activities that Israel considers an existential risk.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu characterized the operation as a defensive action. “Israel had initiated a targeted military operation to roll back the Iranian threat to Israel’s very survival,” he said.

The operation occurred just hours after the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) censured Iran for failing to cooperate with its inspectors—a rebuke not issued in the last two decades.

Mounting Concerns Over Iran’s Rapid Uranium Enrichment

Israel has continued to express alarm at Iran’s nuclear progress, specifically its hurried uranium enrichment. Recent intelligence reviews indicate that Tehran has accumulated a significant cache of highly enriched uranium, having enriched a third of it in only the last three months.

This dramatic increase came at the same time as continued diplomatic negotiations between Iran and the United States. The negotiations sought to remove some U.S. sanctions in return for Iran curbing or stopping its uranium enrichment operations. Yet now, experts caution that Iran may only be seconds away from being able to make a nuclear weapon, with its nuclear program revealing possible military goals.

After the censure by the IAEA, Iran quickly struck back by unveiling plans for the construction of a third enrichment facility and replacing existing centrifuges with higher-tech versions. But Israel preempted those plans.

Critical Iranian Nuclear Facilities Targeted and Examined

Here’s a closer examination of the key Iranian nuclear facilities that have been in the spotlight—and in some instances, under attack.

Natanz Enrichment Facility: The Central Component of Iran’s Nuclear Program

Situated approximately 220 kilometers southeast of Tehran, the Natanz plant is Iran’s main uranium enrichment facility. Most of the complex is constructed underground to avoid damage from air attacks. The plant contains several cascades of centrifuges that operate in coordination to enrich uranium at a quicker pace.

Natanz itself has been a frequent target. It was previously sabotaged by the Stuxnet virus, an Israeli-American joint cyber weapon believed to have been launched at Natanz. Furthermore, two other Israel-linked sabotage activities have hurt the site.

Iran’s atomic agency chief has reportedly told Iranian media outlets that the Natanz nuclear facility has been completely destroyed.#Israel #Iran #Tehran #BreakingNews pic.twitter.com/1na2gsioUN

— Chaudhary Parvez (@ChaudharyParvez) June 13, 2025

In addition, Iran has been excavating in the Kuh-e Kolang Gaz La (Pickax Mountain) to the south of Natanz, probably increasing underground capabilities beyond current security perimeters.

Fordo Enrichment Facility: Designed for Resilience

100 kilometers southwest of Tehran, the Fordo nuclear facility is smaller than Natanz but designed to last. Concealed under a mountain and protected by anti-aircraft missiles, it is designed to withstand air strikes.

Fordo’s construction was said to have started in 2007, though Iran alerted the IAEA to its presence only in 2009—following U.S. and Western intelligence revelations about the facility.

Bushehr Nuclear Power Plant: Iran’s Sole Commercial Reactor

Situated on the Persian Gulf, some 750 kilometers south of the capital city of Tehran, Bushehr is Iran’s sole operational commercial nuclear reactor. The plant was started in the 1970s during the rule of Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi but remained shut down after the 1979 Islamic Revolution and was hit by repeated attacks during the Iran-Iraq War.

Russia later finished the facility, which is now running on Russian-provided uranium and under IAEA watch. Iran is also constructing two other reactors at the plant.

Arak Heavy Water Reactor: Another Route to Nuclear Weapons?

The Arak reactor, 250 kilometers southwest of Tehran, employs heavy water as a coolant for its core. The reactor creates plutonium as a byproduct, providing an alternative pathway to a nuclear bomb.

As part of the 2015 nuclear agreement, Iran committed to redesigning the Arak facility to block proliferation issues. But with the agreement now essentially null and void, the facility’s initial purpose could return as an issue.

Isfahan Nuclear Technology Centre: Research Hub of Iran

Situated 350 kilometers southeast of Tehran, the Isfahan plant is one of Iran’s main science hubs in its nuclear program. With thousands of specialists on its payroll, it accommodates three Chinese-provided research reactors and some related nuclear research laboratories.

Tehran Research Reactor: A U.S. Gift Becomes Strategic Asset

Housed within the headquarters of Iran’s Atomic Energy Organization, the Tehran Research Reactor carries a distinctive Cold War history.
Originally supplied by the United States in 1967 under the “Atoms for Peace” program, the reactor originally operated using highly enriched uranium but was subsequently modified to run on low-enriched fuel to alleviate proliferation concerns.

A Nuclear Flashpoint?

Friday’s raid is a significant escalation in Israel-Iran’s years-long tension. This threatens to destabilize not just bilateral ties, but also regional peace initiatives. The United States, sandwiched between alliance obligations and negotiations, might now be compelled to show more muscle.

As Iran’s nuclear goals continue to be international monitoring focus, Israel has indicated that it is no longer patient enough to wait for diplomacy to stop what it perceives as a ticking time bomb.

With Israel launching Operation Rising Lion, the region teeters on the brink of deeper conflict.
</excerpt>

The US response to Israel’s strike on Iran came quickly after Israel launched Operation Rising Lion against Iranian nuclear and military targets. US officials firmly denied any involvement and warned Iran not to retaliate against American forces.

Although Israel informed the US before the attack, Washington made clear it had no part in the operation. The US is now concentrating on safeguarding its soldiers and preventing more confrontation as concerns of regional escalation increase.

US response to Israel’s strike on Iran

The US has issued a firm and cautious response to Israel’s strike on Iran, with Secretary of State Marco Rubio quickly distancing the Trump administration from Israel’s aggressive military campaign. The Israeli airstrikes, dubbed Operation Rising Lion, targeted nuclear and military facilities deep inside Iran and raised concerns of full-scale conflict erupting across the Middle East.

Rubio stressed that Israel acted unilaterally and reiterated that America’s top priority is the safety of its personnel stationed in the region. “We are not involved in strikes against Iran,” Rubio stated, firmly warning Tehran against retaliating against any US interest.

Meanwhile, Iranian state media blamed Washington for complicity in the strikes and reported civilian casualties, including children. Israel declared a state of emergency and vowed to continue operations “for as many days as it takes,” while observers expressed worry about potential Iranian counterattacks, especially ones targeting US military bases or embassies.

Prime Minister Netanyahu said that the strikes served as a necessity for Israel’s existence because of Iran’s nuclear enrichment program. Although Israel notified Washington before the operation, it clarified this was a decision of national self-defence.

US braces for fallout

Amid rising regional tensions, the US has responded to Israel’s strike on Iran by bolstering security measures. The State Department has partially evacuated its embassy staff in Iraq and has restricted the movements of personnel in Israel.

Although not directly involved, the US is preparing for any indirect blowback. Rubio confirmed that President Trump maintains constant contact with regional partners and has taken all necessary precautions to protect American lives.

President Trump, who has long pushed for a diplomatic solution with Iran, voiced frustration over stalled negotiations. Hours before the strikes, he warned that an Israeli military move could jeopardise ongoing talks. Yet he also acknowledged the rising risk, stating something “could well happen.”

The US shows its commitment to maintaining diplomacy through Trump’s envoy, who still plans to meet with Iranian officials despite the possibility that military tensions could hinder diplomatic efforts.

Israel ‘Fully Ready’ for Iran Operation, Claims US Intelligence: Report

<excerpt>Israel is reportedly “fully ready” to strike Iran, US sources say. The US has evacuated personnel from Iraq and Gulf nations amid rising tensions and stalled nuclear talks.
</excerpt>

Israel is “completely prepared” to strike Iran militarily, CBS News reports, citing US government sources who wish to remain anonymous. This news follows the United States’ commencement of the evacuation of diplomatic staff from various nations in the Middle East, including Iraq, Bahrain, and Kuwait. Included are nonessential employees and their families.

When asked about the evacuation and possible Israeli retaliation, US President Donald Trump remained cryptic, stating only, “We’ll see what happens.”

Nuclear Talks Stall, Fears of Conflict Rise

The escalation in tension follows stalled nuclear negotiations between the United States and Iran. Trump’s Middle East envoy, Steve Witkoff, and Iranian officials are set to hold discussions in the sixth round of talks in the coming weeks.

Yet, according to The Washington Post and Israeli Channel 14, Israel is getting ready for a large-scale military operation against Iran. Both media outlets quoted unidentified officials indicating that Israel is staging a major retaliatory attack. Neither U.S. nor Iranian officials have confirmed the threat or responded to media queries.

Houthis Warn of Regional Escalation

To add to the instability, the Houthis—a Yemeni rebel movement that Iran supports—issued a threat to the US and Israel. In an interview with Newsweek, a Houthi official stated, “In this context, we remain in a state of continuous preparedness and are engaged in efforts to intensify our operations against the usurping power, amidst the increasing massacres in Gaza and the deteriorating humanitarian crisis there.”

They further added, “We are also on the top level of readiness for any probable American escalation against us. Any escalation against the Islamic Republic of Iran is also risky and will lead the whole region to the depths of war.”

With tensions mounting around the region, world powers and observers are closely monitoring for any affirmation or a progressing military operation.

</excerpt>

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu declared that the killing of Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah in September last year “smashed the Iranian Axis,” reshaping the regional power dynamics.

Speaking at the 2025 JNS (Jewish News Syndicate) International Policy Summit in Jerusalem on Sunday night, Netanyahu explained the strategic importance behind Nasrallah’s elimination.

“Nasrallah manipulated Iran much more than they manipulated him,” Netanyahu said. “He was the axis of the axis, and if we removed him, the axis would break.”

A Major Blow to Iran’s Influence

Netanyahu emphasized that Nasrallah was not just a Hezbollah leader, but a central figure holding together Iran’s network of proxies across the Middle East. His removal, Netanyahu asserted, significantly weakened Iran’s ability to project power in the region.

The Prime Minister’s remarks highlighted Israel’s broader strategy to counter Iranian influence through targeted actions against key figures within its allied groups.

A Shift in Regional Dynamics

With Nasrallah gone, Netanyahu suggested that Iran’s so-called “Axis of Evil” — a network that included Hezbollah, various militia groups, and regional proxies — has been severely fractured, creating new opportunities for regional stability and Israeli diplomacy.

</excerpt>

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced that Israel’s recent airstrike on Iranian targets was “precise and powerful,” achieving its intended objectives. The strike came in retaliation for Iran’s October 1 missile attack on Israel, which saw over 200 ballistic missiles launched, causing minor damage but raising regional tensions significantly. According to reports, Israel targeted Iran’s missile production infrastructure, severely affecting its ability to manufacture long-range ballistic missiles and incapacitating critical air defence systems, leaving Iran’s military assets vulnerable to future strikes.

Satellite images show that the Israeli strike inflicted considerable damage on two key Iranian facilities: the Parchin military base, linked to past nuclear weapons research, and Khojir, associated with ballistic missile development. Analysts suggest the damage could take years for Iran to recover, potentially altering its strategic capabilities in the region. This strike underscores Israel’s determination to weaken Iran’s military power while avoiding targets that could further escalate regional tensions, like nuclear or civilian energy facilities.

Also read: Iran Khamenei Cautions Against “Exaggerating Or Minimizing” Israel’s Recent Strike

Netanyahu emphasised Israel’s stance to protect itself against what he described as the “axis of evil” and hinted at broader implications for Iran, Hezbollah, and Hamas. The US reportedly supports Israel’s right to defend itself but urges restraint to prevent further escalation. Both countries continue close coordination on the developments, balancing Israel’s security interests with the geopolitical risks of wider conflict

He stated that the military conducted targeted and precise strikes on military sites in Iran, effectively neutralizing immediate threats to the State of Israel.

He remarked that the IDF had accomplished its mission and warned that if the Iranian regime made the mistake of escalating tensions again, Israel would be forced to respond. Hagari emphasized that anyone who threatens the State of Israel and tries to escalate the situation in the region would face severe consequences.

He noted that Israel had demonstrated its capability and determination to act decisively and was prepared to defend the State of Israel and its people, both offensively and defensively.

Airstrikes on Iran

In retaliation, Israel carried out airstrikes on Iran on Saturday, targeting military sites in Tehran and nearby areas. The Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) stated these actions were a response to “months of continuous attacks” from Iran. Iran claimed its defense systems intercepted the strikes, reporting limited damage and indicating readiness to retaliate. Residents in Tehran and Karaj heard at least seven explosions, though their sources remain unclear.

Military Involvement and Focus

Dozens of Israeli fighter jets were involved, with Prime Minister Netanyahu and Defence Minister Gallant present at military headquarters during the attacks. The strikes did not target energy infrastructure or nuclear facilities, focusing instead on military bases in western Tehran.

Regional Flight Suspensions

In response, Iran canceled all flights, while Israel closed its airspace to civil aviation. Israel notified the United States of the strikes but did not involve them in the operation, with officials calling it an “exercise of self-defense.”

Context of Escalation

This escalation follows Iran’s missile attacks on Israel earlier in October. Additionally, the Israeli army attacked multiple locations in Iraq and Syria, with loud explosions reported in cities like Tikrit and Baiji.

Prime Minister Netanyahu has assured the U.S. that these actions will avoid nuclear and oil facilities. However, internal divisions exist regarding the scale of the strikes, raising concerns about retaliation and broader regional conflict.
</excerpt>

Israeli Plans for Targeted Strikes

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has revealed plans for potential military strikes on Iranian military infrastructure following recent missile attacks. Amid escalating tensions between the two nations, sources indicate that Israel aims to limit its targets and avoid nuclear and oil facilities.

US Military Support Confirmed

In discussions with US officials, Netanyahu assured President Joe Biden’s administration that Israel’s retaliation would focus strictly on military installations in Iran. This more moderated stance prompted the Pentagon to deploy the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) system and 100 US military personnel to bolster Israel’s defenses against possible Iranian retaliation.

Internal Disputes Over Strategy

The Israeli defense establishment is divided on the scale and visibility of any strikes against Iran. While Netanyahu’s team advocates for patience, former Prime Minister Naftali Bennett argues for a more comprehensive attack on Iran’s nuclear capabilities, describing the situation as “a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.”

Geopolitical Stakes and Concerns

The discussions between Israel and the US highlight a complex balancing act. Biden has expressed opposition to strikes on Iran’s nuclear sites, fearing escalation into a broader conflict. However, the stakes are high for Israel, particularly after Iran’s missile attack on October 1, which killed a Palestinian man and prompted Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant to call for a precise and painful response. With ongoing military operations in Gaza and Lebanon, Israel is treading carefully to avoid opening new fronts.

Experts caution that a strike on Iranian infrastructure could provoke significant retaliation from Iran and its proxies, potentially derailing diplomatic efforts aimed at reviving nuclear negotiations. Political analysts suggest that Netanyahu’s timing may also be strategic, anticipating a shift in US policy depending on the outcome of the upcoming elections.

The strike targeted a building near parliament, causing significant damage. Regional tensions are rising as Qatar’s Emir condemned Israel’s actions, calling for a ceasefire and highlighting the humanitarian crisis.
</excerpt>

Israel conducted airstrikes in Beirut early Thursday, resulting in at least six deaths and seven injuries. The strikes targeted a building in the Bachoura district, close to the Lebanese parliament, marking the closest Israeli attack to central Beirut amidst ongoing tensions with Hezbollah.

Witnesses reported hearing a massive explosion, while a photo shared on Lebanese social media depicted a heavily damaged building ablaze. Jeanine Hennis-Plasschaert, the UN special coordinator in Lebanon, described the atmosphere in the city as filled with anxiety and fear, with residents unsettled by the absence of warning sirens during the blasts.

In response to the escalating violence, Qatar’s Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani called for urgent ceasefire negotiations, condemning Israel’s actions as “aggression” and emphasizing that peace in the Middle East is unattainable without a Palestinian state. He characterized the situation as a “collective genocide,” reiterating concerns about Israel’s perceived impunity.

Additionally, three missiles struck the southern suburb of Dahiyeh, where Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah was killed last week. In a related development, Yemen’s Houthis claimed responsibility for a drone attack on Tel Aviv, asserting that the operation successfully reached its target without interception.

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) confirmed intercepting a suspicious aerial target in central Israel and advised residents of Lebanese villages to remain evacuated as military operations continue.

In retaliation, Israel launched airstrikes on central Beirut, marking the first such attack since 2006. The violence has displaced over one million people, raising concerns of a broader regional war.
</excerpt>

Israeli Soldiers Killed in Lebanon Ground Operation

The conflict between Israel and Iran-backed Hezbollah has intensified, with significant casualties on both sides. On Monday, September 30, Israel began a “limited, localized, and targeted” ground operation in southern Lebanon to neutralize Hezbollah threats. By Wednesday, October 2, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) announced the deaths of eight soldiers in close-range firefights against Hezbollah militants. Six of the fallen soldiers were from the IDF’s Egoz unit, while two from the Golani reconnaissance unit perished in separate incidents. The clashes took place in southern Lebanon villages, including Yaroun and Maroun al-Ras.

Hezbollah, a prominent militant group supported by Tehran, claimed responsibility for the deaths, stating that they detonated explosive devices to kill the soldiers. The group further reported destroying three Israeli Merkava tanks with rockets. Israel, in retaliation, claimed that at least 20 Hezbollah fighters had been killed in the gunfights.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu expressed his condolences to the families of the deceased soldiers, stating, “I would like to send my heartfelt condolences to the families of our heroes who fell today in Lebanon, may God avenge them, and may their memories be a blessing.”

Hezbollah’s Tactical Advantage

Hezbollah’s local advantage in southern Lebanon has raised concerns about the future course of the conflict. Defense experts warn that Hezbollah’s deep familiarity with the terrain, its large number of fighters, and its extensive tunnel network may prolong the battle. Since 2006, Hezbollah has expanded its forces from 5,000 to tens of thousands, many of whom gained combat experience during the Syrian civil war. Furthermore, Hezbollah’s possession of drones and advanced surveillance capabilities strengthens its tactical position.

Miri Eisin, a former senior Israeli intelligence officer, noted that the ongoing losses for the IDF indicate the potential for drawn-out ground engagements. Eisin also speculated that the military might shift to nighttime operations to gain a strategic advantage.

Escalating Airstrikes in Lebanon

In response to its deadliest day in Lebanon, Israel escalated its airstrikes. For the first time since 2006, Israeli jets targeted central Beirut, killing six people, including an American citizen. The strikes hit a medical center linked to Hezbollah’s Islamic Health Organization, only meters from Lebanon’s parliament. Overnight, Israel launched five additional airstrikes on Hezbollah targets in the southern suburb of Dahieh.

These strikes come amid growing international concern over the mounting death toll in Lebanon. According to the Lebanese Health Ministry, over 1,000 people, including children, have been killed by Israeli airstrikes in the past 10 days. The United Nations reported that more than one million people have been displaced as a result of the violence.

Fears of a Broader War

The ground invasion marks a significant escalation in the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hezbollah, fueling concerns of a broader war in the region. Israeli officials have stated that their operations in Lebanon are intended to prevent Hezbollah from launching an attack similar to the October 7 assault in northern Israel. Israel’s goal is to push Hezbollah away from the border, ensuring the safe return of displaced Israeli citizens in the north.

With airstrikes expanding and ground battles intensifying, fears are growing that the conflict could escalate into a full-scale war, involving Iran and its other regional proxies.

Israeli leaders, including Prime Minister Netanyahu and Mossad Chief Barnea, clash with Iran’s Supreme Leader Khamenei and Hezbollah forces. This power struggle is intensifying across Lebanon, Gaza, and beyond, threatening broader regional instability.
</excerpt>

Israeli Offensive Sparks Retaliation

The massive Israeli offensive against Hezbollah in Lebanon, coupled with Iran’s retaliatory missile strikes, has marked a turning point in the simmering Middle East conflict. Over 180 missiles rained down on Tel Aviv, escalating tensions that have been building since Israel’s invasion of Gaza a year ago. The killing of Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah has further fueled the conflict, threatening to ignite a broader regional war involving Iran’s proxies in Yemen, Iraq, and Syria.

Cycle of Violence Between Israel and Iran’s Allies

Over the past year, Iran and its allied groups, known as the ‘Axis of Resistance,’ have engaged in a series of back-and-forth attacks with Israel and the United States. This alliance, consisting of groups like Hezbollah, Hamas, and the Houthis, has been central to Iran’s strategy for countering Israeli influence in the region. Iran’s direct assault on Israel signals a shift from years of proxy warfare to open confrontation, potentially sparking a widespread regional conflict.

Iranian Retaliation and Regional Fallout

Iran’s missile strikes on Tel Aviv follow the assassination of key Hezbollah figures, including Nasrallah and senior commander Fuad Shukr. These deaths, along with attacks on Iranian soil, have heightened tensions across the Middle East, with Iran now vowing to avenge its allies. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his defense team have responded with airstrikes and military campaigns, aiming to eliminate Hezbollah’s influence.

Key Figures in the Conflict

Benjamin Netanyahu – Israel’s Resilient Leader

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who faced political challenges after Hamas’s October 7, 2023 attack, has regained prominence through decisive military actions. Netanyahu’s clear objective remains the defeat of Hamas in Gaza and the containment of Hezbollah, while also delivering stern warnings to Iran. His leadership during the conflict has significantly boosted his popularity within Israel.

Yoav Gallant – Israel’s Defense Strategist

Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant has played a pivotal role in orchestrating military operations against Hamas and Hezbollah. Despite reported tensions with Netanyahu, Gallant has been at the forefront of Israel’s military strategy, including the successful ground invasions of Gaza. His expertise has made him a key liaison between Israel and the United States during the conflict.

David Barnea – Mossad’s Mastermind

As the head of Israel’s intelligence agency, Mossad, David Barnea has been critical in executing covert operations. Barnea was behind the attack that crippled Hezbollah’s communication systems and led to the assassination of key leaders. He also spearheaded negotiations for the release of hostages, showcasing his influence in the conflict’s intelligence-driven dimension.

Ayatollah Ali Khamenei – Iran’s Supreme Leader

Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, long seen as the strategic mastermind behind Iran’s regional influence, has taken a more direct stance in the conflict. Following the killing of Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah, Khamenei vowed retaliation, leading to Iran’s missile strikes on Tel Aviv. His leadership is key to the Iranian axis’s response to Israeli actions.

Hossein Salami – Commander of the IRGC

Hossein Salami, the commander of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), has overseen Iran’s military response, including missile strikes targeting Israel. Known for his hardline rhetoric, Salami has become the face of Iran’s aggressive posture in the conflict, highlighting the IRGC’s central role in Iran’s military operations.

Hezbollah’s New Leadership

The assassination of Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah marked a turning point in the conflict, with Naim Qassem stepping in as the face of the Lebanese militia. Qassem, a veteran leader, has continued Hezbollah’s operations against Israel, demonstrating the group’s resilience despite losing its top leadership.

Yahya Sinwar – Hamas’s Architect of War

Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar is regarded as the mastermind behind the October 7, 2023 attack that ignited the latest round of conflict. Sinwar, now in hiding, remains a key figure in orchestrating Hamas’s military strategy. His leadership has been instrumental in Hamas’s ongoing resistance efforts.

Abdul Malik al-Houthi – Yemen’s Houthi Leader

As the leader of Yemen’s Houthi movement, Abdul Malik al-Houthi has aligned with Iran and launched missile and drone attacks against Israel. His involvement represents the broader regional dynamics, with Iran-backed militias across Yemen, Iraq, and Syria playing crucial supporting roles in the conflict.

These prominent figures highlight the multifaceted and international dimensions of the Israel-Iran conflict, with their actions continuing to shape the course of regional tensions.

He warned of a looming global catastrophe and claimed that during his presidency, Iran was contained, resulting in no wars in the Middle East.
</excerpt>

Former President Donald Trump on Wednesday likened the Israel-Hamas conflict to two children fighting in a schoolyard, arguing that recent incidents, including Tuesday’s Iranian missile attack on Israel, should not have occurred. Trump emphasized that the US must remain heavily involved in the Middle East, stating, “This has really been bad, but they have to finish that process. Sometimes you have to just let it go a little bit; we’ll see what happens.”

He described the ongoing violence as a “horrible, horrible war,” expressing concern over the situation’s escalation and the lives affected. Referring to the recent barrage of nearly 200 missiles from Iran, which were mostly intercepted by Israeli defenses with US support, Trump criticized President Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris for their handling of the situation. He claimed that the US is “very close to global catastrophe,” stating, “We have a non-existent president and a non-existent vice president who should be in charge, but nobody knows what’s going on.”

Trump asserted that during his presidency, there was peace in the Middle East, with Iran “fully contained” and desperate for negotiations. He accused the current administration of providing funds to Iran, which he claims has led to an increase in global terrorism. “Under President Trump, we had no war in the Middle East, no war in Europe, and harmony in Asia,” he stated, attributing the current instability to the incompetence of the current leadership.
