Israel Agrees to Qatar Truce Talks, Rejects Hamas’s ‘Unacceptable’ Terms

<excerpt>Israel agrees to Qatar-hosted Gaza truce talks but slams Hamas’s demands ahead of Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu’s US visit.
</excerpt>

Israel is going to send a delegation to Qatar for truce negotiations on Gaza, but has firmly turned down Hamas’s suggested alterations. The office of PM Benjamin Netanyahu on Saturday said that Israel would participate in proximity talks on the basis of a Qatari proposal, which Israel had already accepted.

However, it was made explicit that Hamas’s new demands were “unacceptable.” The development came after renewed diplomatic pressure, particularly from the United States, to bring an end to the months-long conflict in Gaza.

Hamas Gives Signal of Willingness

Hamas said on Friday evening that it would be willing to begin immediate negotiations on the basis of a US-supported ceasefire proposal. The news presented a moment of convergence between both sides in almost 21 months of conflict. Nonetheless, tensions soon reemerged when Hamas conveyed modifications to the initial Qatari model.

Israel reacted with a strong position. “The adjustments Hamas is trying to implement in the Qatari plan were communicated to us last night and are not acceptable to Israel,” Netanyahu’s office added. Nevertheless, it asserted that negotiations would continue in Qatar from Sunday.

Netanyahu Greenlights Talks, Eyes US Visit

Under the official statement, PM Netanyahu directed his delegation to take part in proximity talks. “The negotiating team will depart tomorrow (Sunday) for the Qatar talks,” the statement stated.

The Israeli delegation will pursue contacts aimed at freeing hostages, a key agenda for Netanyahu’s government. The talks will stick to the initial Qatari offer, which Israel has already accepted.

At the same time, Netanyahu will visit Washington on Monday to meet with US President Donald Trump. The US administration has also stepped up efforts in an attempt to broker a ceasefire in Gaza, particularly following a recent Iran-Israel truce agreement.

Trump Exercises Pressure

Trump has promised to adopt a hardline stance during Netanyahu’s visit. He is counting on the momentum of easing tensions with Iran to spill over into Gaza. America believes the Doha-hosted negotiations represent a crucial moment to bring the havoc in the Palestinian land to an end.

Even with diplomatic progress, the divide between Israel and Hamas is large. With Hamas making new demands and Israel creating red lines, the Qatar talks could be in serious trouble even before they start.

But with increasing international frustration and humanitarian worries building, both sides feel pressure to meet somewhere in the middle — or risk further escalation.

</excerpt>

Hamas fighters executed five aid workers and potentially kidnapped other people during a deliberate bus assault in the Gaza Strip, the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF) stated in a press release on Wednesday, June 11. The attack targeted GHF staffers on their way to an aid distribution center near Khan Younis in southern Gaza at about 10 PM.

The GHF, which has delivered more than 271,000 food boxes since May 26, denounced the attack and accused Hamas of issuing repeated threats against its staff. Unfazed by violence, the organization committed to continuing distribution efforts in Gaza. The assault highlights the deteriorating battle for access to aid in the Strip devastated by war.

Bus Attacked Near Aid Site

The GHF verified that its team was attacked on a bus late at night on the road near Khan Younis. Five staff members are killed. Several others are suspected to have been kidnapped. The aid agency is continuing to get information from the scene.

“This attack did not happen in a vacuum,” GHF said. “For days, Hamas has openly threatened our team, our aid workers, and the civilians who receive aid from us. These threats were met with silence.”

Mounting Tensions Over Aid Distribution

The violence follows an escalating battle for control of the aid in Gaza. Hamas desires to resume delivery through UN-supported networks. The US and Israel are against this, as they accuse Hamas of diverting aid from these networks.

The UN refutes the claims. It, rather, condemned the GHF’s model. It stated the model puts the Palestinians at risk by requiring them to travel great distances through Israeli-held territories in order to access food.

Casualties Keep Rising

Since GHF began operations on May 26, several fatal accidents have taken place. The Red Cross and Hamas-aligned health officials witnessed several mass-casualty incidents as Palestinians made their way to receive aid.

The IDF acknowledged firing “warning shots” at individuals who wandered away from designated routes. It confirmed at least eight of these incidents, which added to the mounting casualty list.

Aid Still Falls Short

Despite the bloodshed, GHF indicated that it has distributed some 271,200 aid boxes to date. They are filled largely with dry food that must be prepared elsewhere.

Aid into Gaza is still much lower than required. Israel partially relaxed its blockade on May 19. Since then, an average of 65 trucks daily entered Gaza. The World Food Programme indicates that Gaza requires at least 300 trucks a day to cover essential needs.

IDF officials had earlier conceded that Gaza’s population was on the verge of starvation prior to the resumption of aid following a 78-day blockade.

GHF Vows to Continue

Despite the fatal assault, GHF committed it would not stop operations. It reaffirmed its mission of providing aid to Palestinians directly, even under threat and danger. The attack points to the growing crisis in Gaza. With aid routes still in dispute and civilians still traumatized, aid workers are more threatened on all sides.

Israel Knesset Faces Vote to Disband: Will It End Netanyahu’s Rule?

<excerpt>Israel’s Knesset holds first vote to dissolve amid conscription crisis, war fatigue, and pressure on Netanyahu.
</excerpt>

Parliament of Israel gears up for a dramatic confrontation. On Wednesday, the Knesset will cast an initial vote to disband itself amid a bitter conscription row. It is the first of four approvals required to activate early elections.

Surveys indicate PM Benjamin Netanyahu’s coalition, already battered by war weariness, would lose at the polls. The vote puts a spotlight on a constitutionally divided coalition, Israel’s Gaza war, and growing public discontent.

Coalition Rift Over Ultra-Orthodox Exemptions

Conservative ultra-Orthodox parties—United Torah Judaism and Shas—seek blanket exemptions for yeshiva students from military service. They threaten to support dissolution without new legislation. Their position complicates coalition unity. They argue religious study must remain exempt. Critics see this during wartime as undermining fairness.

Israel reaches its 20th month of Gaza war. The IEC states around 400 Israeli troops killed; Gaza’s casualties are close to 55,000. Support for the war is declining. Most citizens oppose the fairness of religious exemptions with the military under extreme pressure. The military urgently needs to recruit.

First Step of Dissolution: Four Votes Required

Opposition Yesh Atid and supporting parties brought the motion for dissolution. It needs to win four votes: the Wednesday first reading is the first one. If it passes, it goes to committee and needs additional readings. Each step pushes final resolution off. Netanyahu’s coalition intentionally brought many bills to delay.

Coalition leaders like Boaz Bismuth threaten that dissolving the Knesset in the middle of war would benefit Israel’s enemies. Opposition Labour legislator Merav Michaeli accused the government of being “toxic and harmful,” with the call to end the war and free hostages.

Nevertheless, the ultra-Orthodox MPs have no intention of giving in. The leaders among them have produced religious decrees against Israeli army service.

What Comes Next?

If initial approval succeeds on Wednesday, the coalition can also kill the process in subsequent rounds. They have until summer recess to agree on a compromise. Knesset regulations do not allow another dissolution motion within six months if the bill does not pass.

If the bill passes the readings, early elections would ensue within five months in Israel’s 120-seat Knesset.

War, Hostages, National Unity At Stake

PM Netanyahu’s tenure continues to be highly vulnerable. His voters hold him responsible for his war mistakes, including the October 7 Hamas attack that killed 1,200 and left 251 hostages. Israelis desire to change the subject to ending the war and releasing hostages. Dissolution would be the first election since the Gaza war broke out.

Leaders of Israel now have a challenge of crisis management, political survival, and national unity. The Knesset vote is at a turning point: restart through an early vote, or achieve a tenuous peace through negotiations within.

Israeli Strikes Gaza Again, 35 Killed Near US-Backed Aid Site

<excerpt>Israeli strikes in Gaza kill dozens near aid sites, worsening the humanitarian crisis as ceasefire hopes fade.
</excerpt>

Israeli raids in Gaza on Wednesday killed a minimum of 35 Palestinians, the majority around a US-supported relief camp in central Gaza. Local paramedics confirmed that 25 of the dead were civilians heading to food and medical aid near the ex-Netzarim settlement.

Another ten were killed in other raids in Khan Younis. While the global powers attempt to negotiate peace, there is no apparent willingness from Hamas or Israel to compromise. The human cost of the humanitarian crisis is mounting fast, and there is still political stalemate.

Aid Becomes Tragedy

The Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF), funded by the US, was handing out aid along the Netzarim road when the attack occurred. Physicians at Shifa and Al-Quds Hospitals reported most of the wounded were civilians waiting in line for assistance. Dozens were injured. The scene was reported to have consisted of burned remains and blood-soaked tents.

The Israeli army hasn’t made a statement on the recent attacks. But on Tuesday, it defended a similar occurrence along a GHF installation in Rafah. There, 17 were killed. The Israeli army said it opened fire to warn off what it described as “suspects” moving towards soldiers.

More Deaths, No Accountability

Israel’s new strikes occurred only a day after PM Benjamin Netanyahu mentioned “substantial progress” in the negotiations for hostages. Nevertheless, he cautioned it was “too early” to anticipate an agreement. The continued attacks indicate Israel is far from willing to suspend its attack.

Another ten civilians were killed in Khan Younis. Its residents told of an area residential block being hit by the strikes. Air-raid alarms followed by booms broke the night. Survivors talked of digging out loved ones from rubble.

Ceasefire Elusive, Hostilities Escalate

Despite US, Egyptian, and Qatari efforts, talks on a ceasefire remain at a standstill. Neither Israel nor Hamas has agreed to retreat from fundamental demands. Each side accuses the other of collapsed negotiations. Two Hamas officials said they had heard of no new offers.

The conflict started on October 7, 2023, when Hamas slaughtered 1,200 Israelis and abducted 251 hostages. It was Israel’s deadliest day in decades. Israeli forces have since killed close to 55,000 Palestinians, says Gaza’s health ministry. Victims have been predominantly civilians. Gaza’s cities are now in ruins.

As bombs drop even on aid lines, Gaza’s humanitarian crisis escalates. Without a ceasefire, the bloodshed has no end in sight.

Israel Strikes Hodeidah Port, Warns Houthis of Naval and Air Blockade

<excerpt>Israel hits Hodeidah port and warns Houthis of a full blockade as Red Sea tensions with Iran-aligned forces escalate.
</excerpt>

Israel has struck Houthi targets at the Red Sea port of Hodeidah in Yemen and threatened to impose a naval and air blockade if attacks on Israel persist. The strikes, confirmed by both Israeli and Houthi sources, mark a new escalation in the regional fallout from the Gaza war.

The Israeli navy launched the attack on Tuesday, targeting areas in the Hodeidah docks. Defence Minister Israel Katz issued a direct warning to the Houthis, stating that continued aggression would trigger severe consequences.

Houthis Targeted at Key Port

The Houthi-run Al Masirah TV reported two Israeli strikes on the docks of Hodeidah. Israel confirmed the action, saying the port facilitates the transfer of weapons by the Houthis. There were no immediate reports of casualties.

The Israeli military had already urged evacuation of the Houthi-controlled ports of Ras Isa, Hodeidah, and Salif a day earlier. These warnings appear to have paved the way for Tuesday’s strikes.

Threat of Total Blockade

Israel’s reaction went beyond airstrikes. Defence Minister Israel Katz made an explicit threat of total naval and aerial blockade. He tweeted on X, previously Twitter, that if the Houthi attacks continue, Israel will respond forcefully. He stated that the Houthis would be under a total blockade, drastically restricting their operational capability.

Houthis’ Support for Gaza

Since the war in Gaza began in October 2023, the Iran-backed Houthis have launched missiles and drones at Israel and Red Sea shipping routes. They claim their actions are in solidarity with Palestinians. These attacks have disrupted global trade and drawn regional focus to the Red Sea.

Retaliatory Strikes and Regional Pressure

Most Houthi attacks have either been intercepted by Israeli defence systems or failed to reach their targets. Israel has responded with several strikes on Houthi infrastructure. Meanwhile, it has already weakened other Iranian allies like Hezbollah in Lebanon and Hamas in Gaza. Yet, the Houthis and pro-Iranian armed groups in Iraq remain active.

While tensions increase, the crisis in the Red Sea remains a key powder keg. Israel now indicates that it is prepared to move more forcefully if the threat continues to be present.

</excerpt>

Israeli troops attacked the Gaza-bound humanitarian aid ship Madleen, which was carrying climate activist Greta Thunberg, French Member of Parliament Rima Hassan, and actor Liam Cunningham. The Freedom Flotilla Coalition (FFC), which sponsored the mission, stated that the Israeli military intercepted the ship while it was still in international waters and then cut off all communication.

Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz acknowledged the interception, saying he had instructed the military to block the flotilla from reaching Gaza.

Israeli Military Intercepts Aid Ship

The Israeli Navy seized the Madleen last night. The ship was trying to bring aid to Gaza despite the Israel’s long time navy blockade. The FFC indicated quadcopters circling the vessel and spraying it with a white paint-like substance. The group also reported that Israeli forces jammed their radio signals and transmitted jarring noises over their communication network.

The FFC released a photo showing the crew sitting inside the ship with lifejackets on and their hands raised. Although no Israeli troops appeared in the image, the photo intensified fears about the crew’s safety.

High-Profile Passengers on Board

Among those on board were internationally known personalities. Climate activist Greta Thunberg boarded the mission in support of Palestinians in Gaza. Actor Liam Cunningham, renowned for his appearance in Game of Thrones, and French Member of European Parliament Rima Hassan were also aboard the flotilla. It attracted international attention to have them on the aid mission.

While #Madleen must be released immediately, every Mediterranean port should send boats with aid, solidarity, and humanity to Gaza.

Israel ridiculed the trip, referring to the leader of the Madleen as a “selfie yacht” carrying “celebrities” despite being purportedly filled with serious aid workers. Notwithstanding, the FFC insists that the vessel remains loaded with humanitarian aid destined for Gaza’s besieged residents.

Israeli Leadership Defends Action

Defense Minister Israel Katz took full responsibility for the interception. “I’ve ordered the IDF to stop the Madleen flotilla from reaching Gaza,” he said in a statement. Israel has consistently opposed unauthorized sea missions to Gaza, citing security concerns and its blockade policy.

The FFC reported on Monday morning that they had lost contact with the crew. They alleged the ship remained in international waters when Israel attacked. The unexpected silence and videos of drones emitting substances have alarmed human rights activists.

Since there has been no word from the passengers, activists and fans all over the world call for transparency and an urgent update on the condition of the crew.

</excerpt>

Palestinians shot dead in Gaza while queuing for food outside a Rafah aid centre have sparked outrage and global concern. It is reported that Israeli troops fired on civilians. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has demanded an immediate and impartial inquiry. The Israeli army is denying any role, while video footage and increasing death tolls fuel global pressure.

Deadly Incident Near Rafah Aid Centre

The bloodshed occurred close to the US-sponsored Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF) food distribution centre in Rafah. Eyewitnesses say Israeli troops opened fire on individuals waiting in queues for relief. The Red Cross put deaths at 21. The Hamas-controlled Civil Defence organisation reported 31 fatalities.

Antonio Guterres, not mentioning Israel by name, denounced the attack. “It is deplorable that Palestinians are putting their lives in danger to obtain food,” he stated. He called for investigation and responsibility for the deaths.

Israeli Denial and Competing Claims

The Israel Defence Forces (IDF) disputed the allegations. The army described troops firing “warning shots” only at people approaching them a kilometre from the Rafah location pre-dawn. GHF likewise refuted any discharge of shots at their facility.

However, AFP earlier released footage from another incident last week. It showed desperate civilians storming a food warehouse in Deir Al-Balah. Gunfire rang out as crowds seized flour and supplies. At least four died in that chaos.

On Monday, the IDF released new video showing armed men firing on civilians heading toward aid distribution zones. Israel claims the attackers were from militant groups.

Talks Stall, Truce Elusive

Last week, CNN said Israel had accepted a US-sponsored ceasefire proposal. The proposal had included a 60-day ceasefire and a swap of 28 hostages—10 living, 18 dead. But nothing was agreed upon.

The Gaza war is now in its 20th month. Every day without peace brings more tragedy—and now more hunger—to an already battered population.

</excerpt>

The Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) made a swift, accurate airstrike on May 13, releasing more than 50 bombs within 30 seconds. The strike hit a Hamas command centre under a hospital in Khan Yunis, Gaza. The attack killed senior Hamas commander Mohammed Sinwar and operative Muhammad Shabana.

The IDF claimed the centre planned terrorist attacks. The attack was a significant blow to Hamas leadership and highlighted Israel’s high-tech military precision.

Pinpoint Strike Targets Hamas Command Center

The IDF conducted a pinpoint bombing of an Hamas command-and-control bunker under the European Hospital in Khan Yunis. The bunker played a vital role in Hamas’s war efforts. Israel published a 3D drawing to demonstrate how the bombs struck the target with little impact on the hospital above.

The IDF and Shin Bet security agency reported terrorists were taken out while conducting their activities in an area intended to put civilians in harm’s way.

Civilian Protection Measures Adopted

The IDF asserted that it adopted measures to minimize harm to civilians ahead of and during the attack. Nonetheless, Hamas’s Health Ministry claimed 16 deaths and more than 70 wounded as a result of the operation. The attack demonstrates the challenge of fighting militant organizations sheltered within civilian population.

However, Israel is adamant about bringing Hamas to book while attempting to limit collateral damage.

Dramatic Blow to Hamas Leadership

Mohammed Sinwar was a top Hamas military planner and brother of Yahya Sinwar, the recently passed senior Hamas leader in Gaza. His assassination is one of the most important Hamas killings since the fighting began on October 7, 2023.

The IDF emphasized that the attack undermined Hamas’s command-and-control chain and demonstrated the power of Israeli intelligence and air capabilities.

Powerful Message to Hamas Leadership

After the announcement, Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz threatened any remaining Hamas leaders that they are next. Specifically, he named Izz al-Din Haddad in Gaza and Khalil al-Hayya overseas as targets. The attack and warning indicate Israel’s intent on decapitating Hamas’s leadership structure.

This targeted attack highlights Israel’s targeted military campaign in the midst of ongoing violence and sends a clear message to Hamas that its command operations will not be tolerated.

</excerpt>

An Israeli air raid hit a Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF) aid compound in Rafah, killing at least 26, as reported by Palestinian and Hamas-linked media report. The GHF is supported by the US and Israel and opened recently to alleviate Gaza’s humanitarian crisis.

Although Israel has not responded to the attack, the strike revived concerns about aid neutrality, security procedures, and the nature of war. As Gaza struggles through deteriorating conditions, the GHF’s operation becomes increasingly contentious.

GHF Activities Under Scrutiny

The GHF started operations in Gaza only days ago. It was supposed to coordinate aid with US and Israeli support. Delivery of aid was accompanied by tight biometric screening and vetting. Israeli authorities justified this as preventing Hamas-affiliated individuals from receiving goods.

However, several Palestinians doubted the neutrality of the GHF. Some believed Israel might exploit gathered information or dominate access to food. Critics argued the organization defied aid rules. On May 28, Hamas blamed Israel for killing three and wounding 46 in the area around another GHF location. GHF denied the accusation. The Israeli military claimed it shot only warning shots as mobs swelled.

Rafah Strike Deepens Crisis

The most recent airstrike, which was reported by Hamas-affiliated media, struck a GHF aid station in Rafah. A minimum of 26 people were killed. Thousands were waiting to be given food. Israel has made no comment. The attack contributes to the region’s deteriorating humanitarian breakdown.

UN officials refer to Gaza’s crisis as the worst so far since the war started 19 months ago. Food is still in short supply. Aid groups are finding it hard to operate. The GHF is one of the last remaining pipelines. But now its role is questioned.

Aid, Trust, and Accountability

Israel insists it screens aid to keep Hamas from diverting it. Hamas denies stealing supplies and claims it punishes looters. Meanwhile, global agencies say aid access remains far too low. They also distrust the GHF, seeing it as non-neutral.

With more than 54,000 Palestinians killed since October 2023, any attack on aid delivery puts the pressure on. If Israel verifies the Rafah attack, it will surely exacerbate more anger. Aid distribution in Gaza needs to restore confidence—and quickly.

</excerpt>

Gaza food aid chaos turned fatal when four Palestinians were killed after mobs broke into a United Nations warehouse in Gaza’s central part. The UN World Food Programme confirmed that “hordes of hungry” individuals broke into the Al-Ghafari warehouse in Deir al-Balah. Two individuals were crushed to death and two others were shot.

Firecrackers exploded during the melee, though officials have not yet determined their source. The disaster follows days of restricted aid delivery into Gaza, after a three-month Israeli blockade increased an already desperate humanitarian crisis.

UN Warehouse Stormed by Starving Civilians

The WFP said the violence broke out as hunger needs spiralled beyond control. The Al-Ghafari warehouse stored pre-positioned stocks to be distributed. But the crowd of desperate people broke in and grabbed bags of flour and food boxes. AFP video shot the chaos as people rushed for assistance with gunshots ringing in the background.

“Gaza requires an immediate scale-up of food aid. That is the only way to assure people they will not go hungry,” the WFP added in its release.

Violence at Another Food Centre

The warehouse attack was preceded by a similar violent outburst the day before. A civilian was killed and 48 others were wounded at a different aid point. Israeli forces opened fire after Palestinians broke through fences of an aid point operated by a US-funded organisation. Israel had chosen the organization to manage aid delivery into Gaza.

Eyewitnesses reported mayhem. An Israeli helicopter dropped flares as gunfire erupted. Footage captured frightened civilians, including children and women, running and climbing over fences in terror.

Ceasefire Negotiations Fail as Offensive Escalates

At the same time, Israel continues to intensify its military campaign in Gaza. Attempts by intermediaries to secure a ceasefire continue to fail. In Tel Aviv, hundreds protested for a truce, marching at 6:29 a.m.—the precise hour of the October 7 Hamas attack.

Hostage families also expressed anger. Arbel Yehud, released in January, attributed Israeli operations as making the hostages worse off. “Food runs out, pressure mounts, and bombs don’t rescue them. They put their lives at risk,” she stated. Of the 251 October 7 kidnappings, the Israeli army reports 57 hostages still in Gaza, with 34 verified dead.

The ceasefire attempt in Gaza has failed once more. Although Palestinian sources insisted that Hamas had accepted a proposal for a truce, the United States and Israel denied this. The version that Hamas claimed to accept was rejected by US envoy Steve Witkoff, who described it as unacceptable and untrue. It was also rejected by Israeli officials, who claimed that no government could accept such terms.

Israeli forces killed at least 36 people, mostly women and children, when they attacked a UN-run school in Gaza that was providing shelter to civilians amid the growing confusion surrounding peace proposals. As civilian casualties rise and diplomatic efforts stall, the war continues.

Hamas Claims Acceptance, US and Israel Deny

Palestinian sources reported that Hamas had agreed to a ceasefire plan supported by the United States. A 70-day ceasefire, a partial Israeli withdrawal, and the two-phase release of ten surviving hostages were purportedly included in the proposal.

Steve Witkoff, the US special envoy, swiftly denied these allegations. “What Hamas seemed to accept was not my proposal,” he said. Witkoff referred to the version as “completely unacceptable” and explained that the US’s actual proposal called for phased negotiations during the truce and called for a 60-day ceasefire rather than a 70-day one.

Israel also disputed the reported agreement’s validity. No responsible government could accept the terms that Hamas claimed to approve, officials told Reuters. Additionally, they maintained that the United States did not write or approve the plan that Hamas accepted.

Conflicting Proposals Stall Progress

Peace efforts have once again been halted by the parties’ lack of agreement. In reality, Witkoff’s plan calls for a 60-day ceasefire and the two-stage release of ten Israeli hostages. Negotiations for a permanent end to the conflict, Israeli military withdrawal, and the admission of humanitarian aid were anticipated to take place during this time.

A different version, however, with a longer ceasefire and more extensive withdrawals up front, is described in Palestinian reports. A diplomatic impasse has resulted from the inconsistency between the versions.

UN School Attack Adds to Crisis

Violence on the ground persists as negotiations break down. At least 36 Palestinians, mostly women and children, were killed in an Israeli airstrike on the UN-run shelter in Gaza, the Fahmi Al-Jarjawi school. Children were seen escaping the fire in the video. Numerous people were reportedly burned alive inside the school.

Israel justified the attack by saying it went after important militants from Islamic Jihad and Hamas who run a command center on the school’s property. Claims that the intended targets were civilians were rejected.

Human Toll Grows as War Drags On

The situation for civilians in Gaza is getting worse as ceasefire negotiations fall apart. Mistrust, poor communication, and resolute positions have caused numerous attempts at peace to fail. The recent deadly attack has only made the rift wider.

The road to resolving the Gaza conflict is still unclear and potentially fatal unless both parties agree on a specific, verifiable plan. Unless both sides align on a clear, verifiable proposal, the path to ending the Gaza war remains uncertain — and deadly.

</excerpt>

Israel presently controls more than half of the Gaza Strip, and their territory is expanding daily. This move follows Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu’s decision to extend the war in Gaza and is consistent with US President Donald Trump’s polarizing Gaza strategy.

According to the plan, Gaza will be annexed, Palestinians will be forced out, and the area will be turned into a “Riviera of the East.” Netanyahu backs this plan and maintains that the war won’t stop until all Palestinians have left Gaza for good.

Israeli Occupation of Gaza is Growing Quickly

Since mid-March, Israel has significantly increased its presence in Gaza, now controlling more than half of the territory. Analysts predict that this number may eventually rise to 70% or possibly complete control. Before the ceasefire in January, up to 200,000 Palestinians resided in northern Gaza, but Israeli soldiers have already evicted hundreds of thousands of them. Since the last offensive, some 400,000 Palestinians have been forced to escape or be displaced.

Israel is marching southward and has ordered Palestinians in northern Gaza to evacuate while military operations continue. Israeli officials claim that the occupation aims to regulate the delivery of food and separate civilians from Hamas. Evidence, however, suggests a deeper objective: carrying out Trump’s proposal to completely expel Palestinians.

Netanyahu’s Commitment to Trump’s Gaza Plan

PM Netanyahu publicly stated that the war would only end once all Palestinians had left Gaza. He listed stringent requirements for peace, such as the disarmament of Hamas, the exile of its leaders, and the complete execution of Trump’s plan, which he called “correct” and “revolutionary.”

Israeli forces have demolished entire neighborhoods in recent weeks, particularly in the southernmost city of Rafah. By rendering Gaza uninhabitable, the destruction seeks to drive Palestinians to leave the country permanently. Netanyahu affirmed this plan to Israeli lawmakers, emphasizing that homes would be demolished to keep residents from coming back.

Strategic Flattening of Gaza

This strategy has been validated by Israeli officers and soldiers. In order to level the horizon, one soldier reported razing 60 homes every day and leveling whole areas of Rafah. In addition to allowing for military maneuvers, the destruction guarantees that the displaced Palestinians cannot return. This deliberate destruction supports the long-term objective of permanently removing Gaza’s population.

Trump’s proposal for Gaza strengthens Israeli control over the region and the expulsion of Palestinians, bolstered by Netanyahu’s military onslaught. The world watches while this strategy is carried out, posing grave questions regarding Gaza’s future, regional stability, and human rights.

</excerpt>

Pope Leo XIV delivered a stirring speech and made a powerful plea at his first general audience in St. Peter’s Square on May 21, 2025. He urges Israel to allow humanitarian aid to enter the Gaza Strip. Healso emphasized the growing crisis and the fact that the sick, older ones, and children are the groups most affected.

The Pope emphasized the need for quick action by calling the situation “worrying and painful” signifying the urgency of immediate action.

Clear Message of Compassion

Pope Leo XIV has made peace and human dignity a priority ever since he was elected on May 8. “I renew my heartfelt appeal to allow the entry of sufficient humanitarian aid and to put an end to the hostilities, the heartbreaking price of which is paid by children, the older ones, and the sick,” he said during his speech.

VATICAN CITY, Holy See — Pope Leo XIV called Wednesday for sufficient humanitarian aid to be allowed into war-ravaged Gaza, where humanitarian agencies say a total blockade has sparked critical food and medicine shortages.

His remarks reaffirmed the Vatican’s ongoing dedication to moral leadership and international solidarity. His focus on compassion also establishes a powerful tone for his pontificate.

Gaza’s Deepening Humanitarian Crisis

Since Israel imposed a complete blockade on Gaza on March 2, the situation there has gotten worse. Food, medication, and other necessities are severely in short supply as a result of this blockade. Humanitarian organizations swiftly denounced the measure after Israel declared on May 20 that it would permit some aid to pass.

For example, Médecins Sans Frontières and the United Nations referred to the aid as inadequate. Indeed, no aid had reached civilians by May 21, according to UN officials. The authorized shipments, according to one UN spokesperson, are “a drop in the ocean.” It is obvious that urgent needs are not being met by the current aid effort.

World Leaders Increase Pressure on Israel

Leaders around the world have begun to act more forcefully in response. British PM Keir Starmer called in the Israeli ambassador and halted free trade negotiations with Israel. PM Benjamin Netanyahu was urged to stop the military offensive by US President Donald Trump. Additionally, he pledged that the US would help Gaza with humanitarian aid.

Israeli officials declared their intention to step up their military campaign in spite of international pleas. They contended that Hamas might misuse aid. Hamas, however, has refuted these charges. The situation for Gaza’s citizens has gotten worse as a result of this back and forth, which has increased tensions even more.

Moral Imperative for Swift Action

Pope Leo XIV’s appeal now emphasizes the importance of global moral responsibility. He focused on children, the older ones, and the sick because they are the most vulnerable to this crisis. As the humanitarian crisis worsens, the Pope’s message urges a prompt and compassionate response.

In addition, a global decision must be made based on empathy and collaboration. Conversation and action, not inaction, can save lives. The time to act is now.

</excerpt>

The Gaza situation has become critical, with continued Israeli bombing claiming dozens of lives and limited humanitarian relief finding it hard to reach the affected population. Even as Israel relaxed its blockade for a bit, the offensive rages on, to the dismay of international leaders, led by France and its friends, which call for a ceasefire at once and uninterrupted access to aid.

With growing civilian casualties and worsening humanitarian crisis, world leaders issue cautions of grave repercussions if the violence and clampdown do not soon cease.

Insufficient Aid Amid Severe Blockade

Since March, Israel has imposed a rigid blockade on Gaza, limiting essential food, medicine, and fuel. Recently, Israel ease the blockade somewhat, permitting five UN trucks of humanitarian aid, including baby food, through the Kerem Shalom Crossing. This limited aid still doesn’t come close to meeting Gaza’s urgent needs.

French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot called Gaza a “place for dying, not a cemetery” and attributed the worsening humanitarian catastrophe to Israel’s “blind violence” and blockade. Gazans have been enduring extreme shortages, driving the area to famine.

Rising Military Offensive Sparks Concern

Israel’s heavier military campaign followed the October 7, 2023, attack by Hamas that resulted in the deaths of around 1,200 Israelis. Gaza has since suffered colossal devastation. The offensive has left nearly all of Gaza’s two million inhabitants displaced and more than 53,000 dead, including many civilians, Gaza health authorities report.

Regardless of global pressure, Israel continues its campaign, saying the target is to dismantle Hamas militants and release hostages.

International Pressure Mounts

In an unusual and harsh joint statement, Britain, Canada, and France threatened Israel with possible sanctions if the offensive and the restrictions on the aid continue. They have not, however, yet detailed specific measures to take, considering their strategic alliances with Israel.

France has recently hardened its position, even going so far as to consider recognizing a Palestinian state in specific circumstances. The strained relations have elicited biting condemnation from Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu, who declared the Hamas demands a “huge prize” and cautioned they may escalate more violence.

Possible Trade Consequences for Israel

Jean-Noel Barrot suggested the European Union could reconsider its longstanding association agreement with Israel. If human rights abuses are proven, the agreement that underpins trade and cooperation could be suspended, biting economically into Israel.

Gaza’s situation is getting more and more desperate. </excerpt>

Israeli airstrikes struck southern Gaza’s Khan Younis overnight into Thursday, killing at least 54 people, according to local authorities. At the same time, another strike in northern Gaza’s Jabaliya killed 13 more. This marks the second straight night of intense bombing.

An Associated Press cameraman in Khan Younis recorded ten separate airstrikes. Many bodies, severely injured, were taken to Nasser Hospital, where identification was delayed. The hospital’s morgue confirmed 54 fatalities.

Among the victims was journalist Hasan Samour, who worked for Qatar’s Al Araby TV. The network reported that he died along with 11 family members during one of the strikes.

Civilian Casualties Mount

The previous night’s bombings in northern and southern Gaza killed at least 70 people, including around 20 children. Civil Defense teams in Gaza said that the strike in Jabaliya hit a compound that included a mosque and a small medical clinic.

Devastation at Nasser Hospital

Inside Nasser Hospital, grieving mother Safaa Al-Najjar cried over the bodies of her sons—one and a half-year-old Motaz and one and a half-month-old Moaz—killed in the airstrikes. Her five other children were injured, and her husband was in intensive care.
“I gave them dinner and put them to sleep as usual, it was a normal day. Suddenly I don’t know what happened, the world went upside down,” she said. “I don’t know, I don’t know … what is their fault? What is their fault?” Outside the hospital, mourners gathered to pray before the dead were taken for burial.

Netanyahu Vows Escalation

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu recently promised a stronger military campaign in Gaza.
In a statement released Tuesday, he said Israeli forces were preparing to enter Gaza “with great strength to complete the mission … It means destroying Hamas.”

Meanwhile, Human Rights Watch warned that Israel’s stated goal of seizing Gaza and displacing hundreds of thousands “inches closer to extermination.” The group urged global leaders to speak out.

The War’s Toll

The conflict started on October 7, 2023, when Hamas-led militants killed 1,200 people in southern Israel. In response, Israel launched a large-scale offensive. According to Gaza’s Health Ministry, over 53,000 Palestinians have been killed since, many of them women and children. Nearly 3,000 deaths occurred after Israel ended a ceasefire on March 18.

In the last 24 hours alone, hospitals received 82 bodies, including the 54 from Khan Younis. The total Palestinian death toll now stands at 53,010, with nearly 120,000 wounded.

Hamas still holds 58 of the approximately 250 hostages taken during the October 7 attack. Israeli officials believe 23 are alive, but they’re concerned about three of them.

Gaza’s Last Cancer Hospital Shuts Down

The European Hospital in Khan Younis, Gaza’s only cancer treatment facility, is now out of service. Israeli airstrikes severely damaged the hospital and nearby roads, halting all specialized treatments, including cancer and heart care.

Israel claimed it targeted a Hamas command center beneath the hospital. Six people died in the strike. Hospital director Imad al-Hout said 200 patients were present during the attack. All were evacuated, with the last 90 moved to Nasser Hospital. Repair efforts have begun.

Food Crisis Deepens as Blockade Continues

Gaza’s aid blockade has now entered its third month. On Thursday, people in northern Gaza gathered near areas under Israeli fire, desperate for food. In Beit Lahia, a charity kitchen set up among rubble served vegetable soup. Crowds pushed forward, waving empty pots and containers.

Um Abed, a mother of a 3-year-old, said she waited since 9 a.m. and still received no food. “I have a 3-year-old child who’s crying all day because he wants to eat … we want them to stop the war and to allow food in,” she cried, holding her empty pot.

The blockade has devastated Gaza’s urban areas and displaced 90% of the population. Since March 2, no aid—neither food nor medicine—has been allowed into the territory. Global hunger experts have warned of famine unless Israel lifts the blockade and halts the military campaign.

According to the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification, nearly 500,000 Palestinians face starvation. Another one million have extremely limited access to food.

Israel Denies Food Shortage

Israeli government spokesperson David Mencer denied the existence of a food shortage in Gaza. He blamed Hamas, saying, “Hamas is holding onto it … they need to open up the food to the people.”

Human Rights Watch Urges Action

Human Rights Watch stated that Israel’s plan to control Gaza, combined with the “systematic destruction” of civilian infrastructure and the import blockade, should trigger international response under the Genocide Convention. They also called on Hamas to release the remaining hostages. Israel strongly denies accusations of genocide.

</excerpt>

At least 64 Palestinians have died in Israeli airstrikes on Gaza since Friday morning, according to medical sources quoted by Al Jazeera. The number of casualties continues to rise as strikes persist across the region.

UN Warns of Food Crisis

Meanwhile, the United Nations’ World Food Programme issued an urgent alert, stating that “Gaza needs food now.” Thousands face the risk of hunger as aid remains blocked from entering the territory.

Residents Struggle Mentally and Physically

Al Jazeera described people in Gaza as “psychologically broken.” Continuous airstrikes and the Israeli blockade have left many unable to feed their children. The humanitarian conditions have worsened rapidly.

Children at High Risk

Hazem Musleh, a paediatrician at the Kuwaiti Hospital in Rafah, told Al Jazeera that Israeli attacks have severely harmed children’s health. “More children are dying or facing serious health risks,” he said.

West Bank Raids and Arrests

According to the Wafa news agency, Israeli forces arrested eight Palestinians at the Fawwar refugee camp, located south of Hebron in the occupied West Bank. Soldiers stormed homes, damaged property, and detained several individuals before arresting eight.

Cultural Heritage Under Threat

On World Heritage Day, human rights group Al-Haq claimed that Israel targeted several Palestinian cultural sites. These include UNESCO-listed locations. For example, Al Jazeera reported that the al-Makhrour region near Bethlehem, a World Heritage site since 2014, now faces growing threats of land seizures by Israeli settlers.

Death Toll Surges in Gaza

The Gaza Government Media Office stated that the death toll has now surpassed 61,700. Thousands more are missing under rubble and presumed dead. Additionally, the office reported that 1,16,505 people have been injured since the war began 18 months ago.

October 7 Attack in Israel

As per Al Jazeera, at least 1,139 people were killed in Israel during the Hamas-led attacks on October 7, 2023. More than 200 individuals were taken hostage.

Renewed airstrikes and ground operations have displaced thousands, while diplomatic efforts to restore a ceasefire remain stalled.
</excerpt>

Israel has escalated its military operations in Gaza, resuming targeted ground offensives in the central and southern regions. The Israeli military announced its renewed push on Wednesday, aiming to expand security perimeters and create a partial buffer zone between northern and southern Gaza.

Following the deadliest airstrikes since the temporary ceasefire in January, Israel has urged Gaza residents to return hostages and remove Hamas from power. Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz delivered a stern warning: “Take the advice of the president of the United States. Return the hostages and remove Hamas, and other options will open up for you — including the possibility of leaving for other places in the world for those who want to.”

Humanitarian Crisis and Civilian Displacement

As the bombardment continues, thousands of Palestinian families have fled northern Gaza in search of safety. Fred Oola, a senior medical officer at the Red Cross field hospital in Rafah, described the growing panic: “Now, we can feel the panic in the air… and we can see the pain and devastation in the faces of those we are helping.”

The intensified strikes have resulted in mounting casualties, with reports of over 470 deaths in Gaza since Monday, according to local health officials.

Hostage Crisis and Ceasefire Stalemate

The conflict remains deeply entangled with the ongoing hostage crisis. Out of 251 individuals taken hostage during Hamas’s attack on October 7, 2023, 58 remain captive, including 34 whom the Israeli military believes to be deceased.

Hamas has expressed willingness to negotiate but insists on maintaining the original terms of the ceasefire agreement brokered by Egypt, Qatar, and the U.S. “Hamas has not closed the door on negotiations but we insist there is no need for new agreements,” said Hamas official Taher al-Nunu.

The deadlock has hindered diplomatic efforts to restore a ceasefire, with Israel reportedly unwilling to move into the second phase of the agreement, which would have facilitated a long-term ceasefire and Israeli withdrawal from Gaza.

International Reactions and Rising Protests

The renewed strikes have sparked widespread international condemnation. German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock criticized Israel’s military actions, stating they were “shattering the tangible hopes of so many Israelis and Palestinians of an end to suffering on all sides.”

Meanwhile, protests erupted in Jerusalem, where thousands of Israelis demanded greater efforts to secure the safe return of hostages. “We want him to know that the most important issue is to get the hostages back,” said protester Nehama Krysler, 67.

UN Worker Killed, Investigation Underway

Amid the escalating violence, a UN staff member was killed in Deir el-Balah when a UN building was struck. The United Nations has called for a full investigation, with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres expressing shock at the incident.

While Hamas has accused Israel of deliberately targeting aid workers, the Israeli military denied involvement, stating that the incident is under investigation.

With no immediate resolution in sight, the conflict in Gaza continues to escalate, raising concerns over further humanitarian crises and regional instability.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu met with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio in Jerusalem. They discussed President Donald Trump’s controversial Gaza proposal. According to Netanyahu, Israel is working closely with the U.S. to implement this plan. The proposal suggests that the U.S. would take control of Gaza and relocate 2 million Palestinians to redevelop the area.

Trump’s Plan Defended by Netanyahu

Netanyahu defended the plan as “bold and visionary.” During their meeting, both Netanyahu and Rubio blamed Iran for the ongoing violence in the Middle East. They also emphasized the need to stop Iran from developing nuclear weapons.

Controversy Over Palestinian Relocation

The plan has raised concerns. While Israeli officials stated the relocation of Palestinians would be temporary, Trump insists they won’t be allowed to return. This has sparked confusion and worry among many. Netanyahu assured reporters, “We discussed Trump’s bold vision for Gaza’s future and will work to ensure that vision becomes a reality.”

Rubio Calls It a “Breakthrough”

Rubio referred to the proposal as a “breakthrough.” He added, “It may have shocked and surprised many. But what cannot continue is the same cycle where we repeat over and over again and wind up in the exact same place.”

Far-Right Leaders Support the Proposal

Israeli far-right Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich voiced his support for Trump’s plan. Smotrich hopes the transfer of Palestinians will begin soon. He stated, “It will gradually pick up pace and intensify.” He also described Gaza as uninhabitable for Palestinians for the next 10 to 15 years due to continued conflict.

Challenges and International Criticism

Smotrich noted the challenge of finding countries willing to accept the displaced Palestinians. He also acknowledged the difficulty of organizing such a large logistical operation. Meanwhile, international organizations have criticized the plan. They have called it a potential crime against humanity.

Legal Challenges and Netanyahu’s Response

The International Court of Justice (ICJ) is investigating genocide claims against Israel. The International Criminal Court (ICC) has also issued arrest warrants for Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant. Netanyahu dismissed these courts, calling it “lawfare.” He thanked the Trump administration for imposing sanctions on the ICC and hinted at further joint actions against international legal bodies.

No Answers on Ceasefire or Hostages

During the meeting, neither Netanyahu nor Rubio addressed the Gaza ceasefire terms. They also did not discuss the return of hostages.

On Sunday morning, Israel urged civilians in parts of Nuseirat, a region in central Gaza, to evacuate. This follows a series of Palestinian rocket attacks on Saturday. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) issued a clear warning through their Arabic spokesperson, Col. Avichay Adraee, stating, “Terror organizations are once again firing rockets from this area that has received warnings several times in the past.”

To help civilians, the IDF shared a map with specific areas that need to be evacuated. The ongoing conflict in Gaza has escalated concerns for civilian safety as militants continue to launch rockets from various locations in the region.

Rocket Interception at Kerem Shalom Crossing

On Saturday, Israel’s air defense systems successfully intercepted a rocket aimed at the Kerem Shalom border crossing, a vital point for humanitarian aid deliveries to Gaza. This interception highlights the ongoing tensions between Israeli forces and Palestinian militants in the region, particularly in areas crucial for aid access.

Ongoing Conflict and Humanitarian Concerns

The situation in Gaza remains critical, with the continued threat of rocket fire and airstrikes affecting both civilians and aid operations. Israel has repeatedly targeted areas from which rockets are fired, but the humanitarian situation in Gaza continues to worsen. International calls for peace and a resolution to the conflict have grown louder, but the conflict shows no signs of easing in the near future.

Israeli military operations in and around Tulkarem in the northern West Bank resulted in at least eight deaths on Tuesday, according to the Palestinian Health Ministry. Notably, three of the fatalities occurred due to airstrikes.

Military Defends Actions

In response, the Israeli military stated that its forces fired after militants attacked soldiers. However, it acknowledged that “some uninvolved civilians” were harmed during the operation. Meanwhile, a photojournalist captured a significant moment during the raid. The journalist documented Israeli forces detonating an explosive device allegedly planted by Palestinian militants in the Nur Shams refugee camp.

Escalation of Raids Amid Gaza Conflict

Since the October 7 Hamas attack on southern Israel, Israeli forces have increasingly carried out raids in the West Bank. As a result, airstrikes, once rare in the area, have become more frequent. Israeli authorities argue these measures are necessary to prevent further attacks.

Rising Death Toll in the West Bank

According to Palestinian officials, Israeli fire has killed at least 800 Palestinians in the West Bank since October 2023. Simultaneously, Palestinian militants have launched numerous attacks on Israeli soldiers at checkpoints and within Israel.

As tensions continue to rise, the conflict shows no signs of abating, further deepening the region’s crisis.

Alexander was taken during Hamas’ October 7, 2023, attack on southern Israel. His family chose not to comment but allowed the 3.5-minute video to be published. The footage shows Alexander, pale and sitting against a wall in a dark space. He addresses his family, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, and Trump. It remains unclear whether his statement was scripted by his captors.

Edan Alexander is a US citizen from New Jersey. Today Hamas released this torture video of him. It’s been over 400 days. What the fuck is this administration doing about American citizens held hostage in Gaza? Why are they still there? How is an internationally renowned terror… pic.twitter.com/v3NXZSsxio

Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu condemned the video, describing it as “cruel psychological warfare.” He assured Alexander’s family that Israel is working tirelessly to bring the hostages home.

Hostage Situation in Gaza

Around half of the 101 hostages still held in Gaza are believed to be alive. Efforts to secure their release continue, with ongoing negotiations and international pressure.

Ceasefire Talks and Hostage Release Efforts

Hamas leaders were expected to meet with Egyptian officials in Cairo on Saturday to discuss a ceasefire and potentially secure a deal for hostages’ release in exchange for Palestinian prisoners.

Both the Biden administration and President-elect Trump’s team are intensifying efforts to resolve the hostage crisis. The Hostages Families Forum has called on both administrations to take swift action.

Both the United States and Israel issued security alerts regarding a possible attack on tourist sites in Sri Lanka on Wednesday, particularly in the coastal region.

U.S. Embassy Warning

The U.S. Embassy in Sri Lanka released an alert stating that they had obtained “credible information warning of an attack targeting popular tourist locations in the Arugam Bay area.” In light of this threat, the embassy has placed travel restrictions on its personnel, effective immediately. The statement urged American citizens to “strongly avoid the Arugam Bay area until further notice” due to the serious risks involved.

Israel’s Travel Advisory

Similarly, Israel’s National Security Council issued a warning advising Israeli citizens to “immediately leave Arugam Bay and the south and west coastal areas of Sri Lanka.” The advisory cited “credible terrorism threats at the tourist and coastal areas” as the reason for the increased caution. Israel raised its travel advisory level for Sri Lanka, stating, “The travel alert for Arugam Bay and the coastal areas in south and west Sri Lanka (including for the cities Ahangam, Galle, Hikkaduwa, and Weligama) has been raised to level 4.” The advisory recommended that anyone in these areas should leave immediately or at least travel to the capital city, Colombo, where local security forces are more present.

The Israeli alert also included advice to “avoid openly exhibiting anything that could identify you as Israeli,” such as wearing t-shirts with Hebrew writing or displaying symbols related to one’s religion or nationality.

Context of the Alerts

Neither the U.S. nor Israeli alerts provided detailed information about the potential nature of the attack. It is important to note that recent protests against Israel’s actions in Gaza have occurred in predominantly Buddhist Sri Lanka. However, the country has not experienced significant terrorist attacks since the 2019 Easter Sunday bombings, when coordinated suicide attacks on three Catholic churches and three luxury hotels resulted in 270 deaths and over 500 injuries.

Two assailants from the West Bank executed the attack, which injured 17 others. Violence has surged in the region, coinciding with ongoing hostilities between Israel and Gaza.
</excerpt>

The death toll from a shooting and stabbing attack in Tel Aviv climbed to seven after one of the victims succumbed to his injuries overnight, according to hospital sources on Wednesday. Tel Aviv’s Ichilov Medical Center reported that the critically wounded patient, suffering from severe multi-system damage, passed away despite the efforts of medical staff.

The attack occurred on Tuesday near Tel Aviv’s Jaffa light rail station, leaving six others dead and 17 wounded. Israeli police identified the attackers as residents of the occupied West Bank in their 20s. One assailant was killed, and the other was seriously injured in the incident.

Two of the victims were identified as Israeli citizens Shahar Goldman, 30, and Inbar Segev Vigder, 33.

Since the escalation of violence on October 7, when Hamas launched attacks on southern Israel, Palestinian militants have carried out several attacks on Israelis. Israeli officials report at least 26 Israeli deaths, including members of the security forces, during this period.

Simultaneously, violence in the West Bank has intensified, with at least 682 Palestinians killed by Israeli forces or settlers since October 7, according to the Palestinian Health Ministry.

Tuesday’s attack came on the same day Iran fired a barrage of missiles at Israel, forcing hundreds of thousands of Israelis into public shelters, further escalating the conflict.

The list includes names, ages, and ID numbers. Despite Israeli skepticism of Gaza’s reported death toll, UN investigations in past conflicts have found Gaza’s casualty figures to be generally accurate.
</excerpt>

Gaza’s health ministry has released a list identifying 34,344 Palestinians who have died in Israeli attacks since the war began, detailing names, ages, genders, and ID numbers for more than 80% of the total death toll. The remaining 7,613 victims are still unidentified, as their bodies have been recovered but not yet confirmed by hospitals or morgues.

The deceased include 169 infants born after the Hamas attacks on October 7, which initiated the war, and a man born in 1922, who had lived through over a century of conflict. The list spans 649 pages, with most names arranged by age, illustrating the devastating impact on Gaza’s young population. Notably, over 100 pages are dedicated to children under the age of 10, with the first adult names only appearing on page 215.

While Israeli officials have cast doubt on the accuracy of the death toll provided by Gaza’s health authorities, citing Hamas’ control over the territory, past conflicts have shown these figures to be generally reliable. United Nations investigators have previously found that Gaza’s records closely match their own in past wars.

The newly released list adds over 2,000 names to the total number of identified victims, though it does not differentiate between civilians and fighters. However, the majority of the 34,344 identified deaths are civilians, based on age and gender data. Among the dead are 11,355 children, 6,297 women, and 2,955 elderly individuals.

Israel, on the other hand, claims to have killed 17,000 militants, though it has not provided evidence or estimates for civilian casualties. The official death toll from Gaza’s health authorities also excludes those still trapped beneath rubble from collapsed buildings, as well as those who have died from indirect causes such as hunger, disease, and the collapse of the healthcare system. Officials estimate around 10,000 people remain buried under ruins, with more lives lost to deteriorating living conditions, which will be accounted for once fighting ceases.

Large-Scale Demonstrations and Road Blockages

Israeli media reported that around 300,000 people assembled in Tel Aviv, with another 200,000 participating in protests nationwide. Demonstrators in Jerusalem blocked streets and gathered outside Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s residence, demanding action. In Tel Aviv, protesters filled the main highway, holding flags bearing images of the deceased hostages. Police responded by using water cannons to disperse crowds, resulting in 29 arrests. In solidarity with the protests, labor leaders announced a one-day general strike for Monday.

Recovery of Hostage Bodies from Gaza

The Israeli military announced on Sunday that the bodies of six hostages—Carmel Gat, Hersh Goldberg-Polin, Eden Yerushalmi, Alexander Lobanov, Almog Sarusi, and Ori Danino—had been recovered from a tunnel in Rafah, a city in southern Gaza. Military spokesperson Rear Admiral Daniel Hagari confirmed the recovery, while a health ministry spokesperson revealed that the hostages had been “murdered by Hamas terrorists in several shots at close range” 48 to 72 hours prior.

Netanyahu Under Pressure Amid Ongoing Conflict

Prime Minister Netanyahu faces mounting pressure to negotiate a ceasefire and secure the release of the remaining 101 hostages. The conflict, which began following attacks by Hamas and other militants on October 7, 2023, has led to substantial casualties and widespread devastation in Gaza. Israeli forces have heavily targeted the Gaza Strip, which has a population of 2.3 million. According to Gaza’s health ministry, at least 40,738 Palestinians have been killed in the conflict, and the region faces severe humanitarian conditions.

Calls for Action from Trade Unions and Political Leaders

Arnon Bar-David, head of Israel’s trade union federation, called for a general strike on Monday to push the government toward a ceasefire agreement. Defense Minister Yoav Gallant and opposition leader Yair Lapid also supported the call for an agreement, with Lapid urging participation in the Tel Aviv protests.

Family Reactions and Diplomatic Efforts

Netanyahu’s office reported that the Prime Minister had expressed “deep sorrow” to the family of Alexander Lobanov, one of the deceased hostages. However, the family of Carmel Gat rejected the Prime Minister’s offer to meet, instead urging Israelis to join protests. “Take to the streets and shut down the country until everyone returns. They can still be saved,” said Gat’s cousin, Gil Dickmann, on X.

Ongoing Negotiations and Humanitarian Efforts

Efforts to negotiate a ceasefire, mediated by the United States, Qatar, and Egypt, have yet to yield results despite increased US involvement. Currently, Israel and Hamas have agreed to a temporary pause in fighting for eight hours daily from Sunday to Tuesday to allow for the vaccination of 640,000 children in Gaza against polio.

Following intense clashes between Israel and the Iran-backed Hezbollah group over the weekend, the White House announced that negotiations aimed at securing a ceasefire in Gaza and the release of Israeli hostages are ongoing, as reported by CNN. Over the weekend, some progress was made in the talks, according to a senior U.S. official familiar with the discussions in Cairo, where mediators focused on the “final details” of a potential agreement. These details include the names of prisoners to be exchanged as part of the deal.

While progress is evident, it doesn’t necessarily indicate that a final agreement is imminent. Negotiators in Cairo are currently working through the finer points of the deal, the official stated. John Kirby, spokesperson for the White House National Security Council, said on Monday that all parties involved in the conflict, including Hamas, are represented in the talks. The discussions have reportedly become more detailed as negotiators strive to reach an agreement.

However, Bassem Naim, a member of Hamas’s political bureau, denied Hamas’s participation in Monday’s negotiations. In an interview with Al Arabi TV, Naim reaffirmed Hamas’s willingness to negotiate based on a July 2 proposal but rejected the additional conditions introduced by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

The conflict traces back to a massive terror attack launched by Hamas on October 7 of the previous year, in which 1,200 Israelis were killed and over 250 were taken hostage. More than 100 hostages are still being held. Israel retaliated with a significant military campaign against Hamas in the Gaza Strip. This operation has drawn international criticism due to the high number of civilian casualties, with the Gaza Health Ministry reporting over 40,000 Palestinian deaths.

Netanyahu has maintained that the war in Gaza will continue until Israel achieves a “total victory” over Hamas, even if a ceasefire deal is reached. This stance has been challenged by several high-ranking Israeli officials, including his defense minister, as well as families of those held captive by Hamas.

Negotiators have spent months attempting to reconcile the demands of both Netanyahu and Hamas. Though key differences remain, U.S. officials believe these obstacles could still be overcome. One major point of disagreement is Israel’s military presence in the Philadelphi corridor, a strategic area along Gaza’s border with Egypt. Hamas strongly opposes Israel’s intent to keep troops there during the initial phase of any ceasefire deal.

The U.S. official indicated that the current proposal calls for Israel to withdraw from “densely populated areas” in Gaza, but the debate now centers around which parts of the Philadelphi corridor are considered populated versus unpopulated. Israel plans to maintain a military presence in the less populated regions during the early stages of the agreement.

Despite public declarations by Hamas, who left Cairo on Sunday demanding that any agreement include a permanent ceasefire, a complete Israeli withdrawal from Gaza, the return of displaced residents, and a serious prisoner exchange, U.S. officials believe that Hamas may be more flexible on allowing an Israeli military presence during the first phase of a ceasefire agreement.

US proposals, supported by Qatar and Egypt, aim to close gaps between Israel and Hamas. The visit occurs amid rising regional tensions, including threats from Iran and ongoing violence in Gaza.
</excerpt>

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken is scheduled to arrive in Israel on Sunday as part of Washington’s escalating diplomatic efforts to secure a ceasefire in Gaza, aimed at ending the 10-month conflict between Israel and Hamas. This visit marks Blinken’s tenth trip to the region since the war erupted in October last year.

Bridging Proposals and Cautious Optimism

Recent US proposals, backed by mediators Qatar and Egypt, have brought renewed hope for a resolution. US officials are optimistic about closing the deal but acknowledge that more work is needed. A senior Biden administration official noted that the gaps between the warring parties have been largely bridged, making the deal ready to be finalized.

Regional Tensions and International Support

Blinken is expected to meet with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and other senior officials during his visit. The talks come amid heightened tensions, with Iran threatening retaliation after the assassination of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran on July 31. Washington has warned Iran against any retaliatory actions, citing potentially catastrophic consequences. Israel issued new evacuation orders in response to Hamas rocket fire. The war, which began on October 7 when Hamas launched an attack on Israel, has devastated Gaza and resulted in over 40,000 Palestinian deaths, mostly civilians, according to Palestinian health authorities. Initially focused on pediatric care, her clinic now serves entire families displaced by the ongoing violence, reflecting the broader crisis affecting Gaza’s 2.3 million residents.

The cost of basic medications has skyrocketed, with a tube of burn ointment now costing 200 shekels ($53). This decision contrasts with Hiroshima’s approach, where Israel’s invitation to their ceremony remains unaffected despite calls for exclusion.

Security Concerns Cited for Exclusion

Mayor Suzuki emphasized that the exclusion was motivated by security concerns rather than political reasons. He stated that the decision was made to ensure the ceremony could proceed smoothly and respectfully honor the victims of the atomic bombings.

Hiroshima Maintains Invitation Amid Calls for Exclusion

Hiroshima, which experienced the first atomic bombing, will host its peace ceremony with representatives from 115 countries and the European Union. Hiroshima officials have chosen to retain Israel’s invitation, despite pressure from activists and survivors advocating for its exclusion due to Israel’s recent military actions in Gaza.

Israel Responds with Regret

Israel’s Ambassador to Japan, Gilad Cohen, expressed regret over Nagasaki’s decision, calling it a “wrong message to the world.” Cohen defended Israel’s military actions as necessary for self-defense against terrorist organizations, rejecting accusations of breaching international humanitarian law.

Hiroshima’s Approach to Other Nations

Hiroshima authorities have faced criticism for excluding Russia and Belarus from their event since 2022 due to the invasion of Ukraine. Despite this, Hiroshima’s stance on Israel remains unchanged. A spokesperson from Hiroshima clarified that their policy is to invite all countries, with exceptions made only for specific geopolitical reasons.

Ceremony Details

The Nagasaki peace ceremony will be held at Peace Park on August 9, commemorating the day the second atomic bomb was dropped on Japan, three days after Hiroshima.
