</excerpt>

At least four Palestinians were killed and shot near an aid distribution center in southern Gaza before dawn on Saturday, local health workers said. The victims were said to be on their way to a facility run by the newly established Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF), an aid distribution project supported by Israel and the United States.

Deadly Incident at Rafah Aid Site

Paramedics reported the four were in a group of people waiting in the hopes of getting food assistance. One woman reported her husband was hit in the head while he was waiting for supplies. The facility, near Rafah, had not yet opened for the day.

The Israel Defence Forces (IDF) reported that soldiers opened fire in warning after issuing a verbal warning to an apparent group threat. “The number [of casualties] does not match information presently held by the IDF,” a release stated, although the military did confirm having knowledge of reports of injuries.

Increased Death Toll among Gaza GHF Distribution Points

The GHF system has been tainted by controversy since it was inaugurated. At least 60 Palestinians have been killed in reported shooting incidents in the first three days of aid distribution. Various eyewitnesses have accused Israeli soldiers of carrying out the shootings.

The IDF reported that it had only opened fire to issue warning shots in the first few days and eventually shot in the vicinity of people who were suspected. It stated that probes into the incidents are ongoing.

IDF Restrictions and Contested Gaza Aid Mechanism

Israeli troops have stated that entry and exit to GHF locations are only allowed between 06:00 and 18:00. During other times, the sites are considered “active combat areas.”

GHF established three centers on last Sunday one in Gaza City and two others in Rafah. Israel started permitting limited aid into Gaza after a three-month closure but diverted it through GHF instead of the United Nations.

Israeli authorities blame the UN for not doing enough to stop diversion of aid by Hamas combatants, a charge the UN does not acknowledge. Humanitarian agencies have universally criticized the GHF strategy as unsafe and unethical.

The Madleen, however, a ship belonging to the Freedom Flotilla Coalition with climate activist Greta Thunberg onboard, was said to be 160 nautical miles off Gaza. Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz threatened that the boat should not make it to the coast, saying, “You’d better turn back, because you will not reach Gaza.”

</excerpt>

A new study, as reported by The Guardian, shows that the current Israel-Gaza conflict has emitted more climate pollution than 100 nations combined for one year. The conflict has emitted over 31 million tonnes of carbon in only 15 months, more than the combined emissions of Costa Rica and Estonia in 2023.

The majority of the emissions are a result of Israeli military activity and US arms shipments. Half of all the emissions resulted from Israeli tanks, weapons, and air bombardments. US arms and supplies shipped from Europe to Israel contributed about 30%, with Israeli aircraft, fuel usage, and production and deployment of explosives providing the remaining 20%. In comparison, emissions related to Hamas weapons and tunnel use comprised only 0.2% of the total.

Energy Crisis of Gaza Boosts Emissions

Before the war, Gaza was mainly dependent on solar power, with almost 25% of its electricity being produced by the sun. Much of that infrastructure has been destroyed, including Gaza’s only power station and most of its solar panels. Now, residents are largely reliant on diesel generators, which alone have added approximately 130,000 tonnes of carbon emissions to the atmosphere.

The conflict has ravaged Gaza’s ecosystem, leaving around 60 million tonnes of poisonous debris. Reconstruction will include rebuilding 436,000 houses, 700 schools, mosques, hospitals, and roads. The process of rebuilding alone has the potential to release another 29.4 million tonnes of carbon emissions, equivalent to Afghanistan’s total emissions in 2023.

In addition, humanitarian assistance has contributed to climate change. The 70,000 aid vehicles authorized by Israel into Gaza for the duration contributed over 40% of the overall emissions. Humanitarian organizations highlight that this assistance continues to be inadequate for Gaza’s 2.2 million inhabitants.

Regional Impact: Beyond Gaza

The environmental footprint of the war goes beyond Gaza. In Yemen, Houthi rebels fired about 400 rockets into Israel, releasing about 55 tonnes of carbon emissions. But Israel’s military response released emissions about 50 times greater. In Lebanon, more than 90% of emissions attributed to the war came from Israeli bombings. Simultaneously, missile exchanges between Iran and Israel released more than 5,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide, primarily resulting from Israeli military activities.

The research used a new method to calculate both direct and indirect war emissions, such as burned-up farmland, blazes, humanitarian assistance, displaced refugees, and longer shipping distances as a result of traffic jams in the Red Sea. Scientists caution that the actual carbon cost of the war is probably much greater, but restricted access to official statistics and Israel’s media blockade prohibit precise calculations.

Military Emissions: The Invisible Climate Crisis

Despite the immense scale of emissions from military activity, these remain largely unreported in global climate data. Under United Nations guidelines, countries are not required to disclose most military emissions, and reporting fuel consumption is optional. The Israeli military, like most worldwide, has never reported emissions to the UN.

Experts claim this reporting shortfall hides the actual environmental impacts of war and allows governments free rein to exploit the planet during conflicts. They claim that such a lack of accountability puts future climate stability at risk.

Israel’s military expenditure skyrocketed to $46.5 billion in 2024—the biggest increase in the world. Its standard military operations alone generate more greenhouse gas emissions than the entire country of Eritrea. This does not account for the other climate harm incurred by the Gaza war.

</excerpt>

Gaza receives flour and baby food on Thursday after Israel opened the gate to limited truckloads across the border. This follows an 11-week siege that put a quarter of the enclave’s 2.3 million residents in danger of famine. Israel eased the all-out supply ban under mounting world pressure put in place in March.

As 100 aid trucks rolled in Wednesday with baby formula and medical supplies, Palestinian officials and relief groups report that the shipments are woefully inadequate to meet needs. In the meantime, Israeli bombardments raged on throughout Gaza, claiming dozens of lives.

Aid Trucks Arrive, Supplies Are Grossly Inadequate

Israel permitted the passage of 100 trucks on Wednesday. They contained basic supplies such as flour, baby food, and medical equipment. The limited delivery is the first easing of the blockade imposed in March. Israel says that Hamas was hijacking supplies for combatants—a claim Hamas refutes.

Palestinian NGOs claimed that just 90 trucks had actually entered by Thursday. Under the previous ceasefire, 600 trucks would enter daily. “The number now is a drop in the ocean,” stated Amjad al-Shawa, head of the Palestinian Non-Governmental Organizations Network in Gaza.

UN-Backed Bakeries Start Distributing Bread

Some bakeries, supported by the UN World Food Programme, began to receive flour. They intend to bake bread for distribution by UN employees directly. This managed system substitutes previous attempts, when bakers retailed bread at subsidised prices. Shawa stated that the target is to provide “the most needy families, those who are desperate.”

Bombings Continue Even as Aid Begins to Flow

Despite the delivery of aid, Israeli attacks went on Thursday. At least 35 Palestinians were killed, reported Gaza health officials. A tank shell struck a warehouse of medicines at the Al-Awda Hospital in Beit Lahiya and it caught fire. Medics indicate that Israeli tanks are still blocking hospital doors outside.

Gaza’s Health System on the Brink of Collapse

Most of the hospitals are no longer operational. Strikes, raids, and the prohibition of medical equipment have destroyed Gaza’s healthcare system. Flames engulf destroyed warehouses, and patients and medics go without treatment or protection.

Ceasefire Talks and Political Standoff Intensify

Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu announced Wednesday that he would accept a temporary ceasefire to facilitate hostage releases. Otherwise, he promised to press on with the military campaign to take over Gaza completely. Hamas turned it down. “There is no value to any agreement that doesn’t stop the massacres in Gaza permanently,” Hamas official Sami Ab Zuhri said.

Toll Rises as Humanitarian Crisis Deepens

Israel’s military retaliation followed Hamas’ October 7 attack that killed about 1,200 individuals and resulted in 251 abductions of hostages. More than 53,600 Palestinians have been killed since then, according to Gaza’s health officials.

The region is in ruins, and aid organizations say malnutrition is prevalent.

Israel Forces Mass Evacuation from Khan Younis Before Major Military Assault

<excerpt>Israel orders a mass evacuation of Khan Younis ahead of an unprecedented military attack, as tensions in Gaza escalate.
</excerpt>

In one of its largest evacuation orders in recent months, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) has directed residents of Khan Younis and surrounding areas to evacuate immediately, warning of an “unprecedented attack” as it intensifies its military campaign in southern Gaza.

Khan Younis Faces Large-Scale Evacuation Order by IDF

The order affects residents of Khan Younis, Bani Suhaila, and Abasan, urging them to flee westward toward the coastal area of al-Mawasi. An Arabic statement issued by IDF spokesperson Avichay Adraee declared the region a “dangerous combat zone” and blamed “terrorist organizations” for the suffering of civilians. “For your safety, evacuate immediately,” the statement read.

Ongoing Gaza Offensive: Operation Gideon’s Chariots

The latest military push, dubbed Operation Gideon’s Chariots, began on Friday. Health authorities in Gaza reported that over 100 people have been killed in the past 24 hours. Among the victims were seven civilians sheltering at a school in Nuseirat and three others in a home in Deir Al-Balah. Additionally, an Israeli airstrike hit a warehouse at Nasser Hospital containing medical supplies, causing further strain on the already overwhelmed healthcare system.

Humanitarian concerns are mounting as displaced residents recount the chaos of the evacuation. Thirteen-year-old Tasneem Barakeh, forced to flee without her father who had gone out to find food, pleaded, “Please God, let the war stop. Where is my father?” Another resident, Abdallah Abu Shab, said, “There is no tent for us there or anything. There isn’t any transportation, and people do not have money to ride a cart.”

Israel’s Goal: Full Control of Gaza Starting From Khan Younis

Despite the increasing toll, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu reaffirmed the government’s goal of taking “control of all areas of the Strip.” In a video message, he said, “We are engaged in massive fighting intense and substantial and there is progress.”

The IDF claims it has struck 160 targets in Gaza within the past day, including anti-tank positions, underground infrastructure, and weapons storage sites. Meanwhile, allegations have emerged that Israeli special forces entered a Khan Younis home disguised as women and killed a senior militant leader.

Hostage Situation and Growing Concerns

As military operations escalate, pressure mounts over the fate of the remaining 58 hostages in Gaza. The Hostages and Missing Families Forum expressed grave concern, warning that increased strikes have worsened treatment of hostages.

More than 53,000 Palestinians have died since Israel’s campaign began in response to Hamas’s October 7 attack, which killed 1,200 Israelis and led to 251 hostage takings.

Nearly 100 Dead in North Gaza as Israel Launches Massive Attack

<excerpt>Nearly 100 killed in massive Israeli assault on north Gaza, with homes, tents, and shelters bombed overnight, say rescuers.
</excerpt>

In a horrific intensification of the current violence, about 100 individuals, among whom were some children, were said to have been killed in a mass Israeli military attack on north Gaza early on Friday, Hamas-run civil defence officials and residents said.

The offensive conducted by land, air, and sea is the most significant ground assault on north Gaza since March. Israeli tanks, artillery, warships, and aircraft targeted multiple civilian-populated areas, including Beit Lahia and the Al-Salateen neighbourhood. The Israeli military stated that it was targeting “terrorist infrastructure” and claimed to have eliminated several militants over the past day.

At least nine homes and tents housing civilians were allegedly bombed, with dozens remaining buried under the debris. Witnesses had talked of horrifying moments as shells poured down in artillery fire, followed by tank thrusts and the release of smoke bombs. Israeli planes had dropped leaflets calling for civilians to leave immediately, which had caused general panic.

Eyewitnesses Recall Night of Horror in Gaza

“We didn’t take anything with us no food, no furniture. We even left barefoot,” said Basheer al-Ghandour, one of the survivors whose family home was destroyed and killed some members including his young nieces and nephew. His brother’s wife is still stuck under the rubble.

One survivor, Yousif Salem, described a desperate flight with his children. “We escaped only minutes before Israeli tanks surrounded the area,” he told them. Reports stated that Israeli armoured vehicles surrounded a school that housed hundreds of internally displaced people.

This military action follows a day after more than 120 individuals were reported killed by Israeli airstrikes in southern Gaza. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) say they have struck more than 150 “terror targets” across the Gaza Strip in the last 24 hours, including anti-tank missile facilities and Hamas military targets.

Mounting Concerns Over Conditions in Gaza Strip

At the same time, the humanitarian situation in Gaza is deteriorating. Israel’s blockade, which entered its 10th week, has strictly limited access to food and aid. A UN-supported report cautioned that the whole population of Gaza some 2.1 million people faces the threat of famine.

The global community has increasingly expressed concern. U.S. President Donald Trump also acknowledged the deteriorating situation, stating the U.S. had to “help out the Palestinians,” and Secretary of State Marco Rubio said the administration was “troubled” by the emerging humanitarian crisis.

Israel initiated its attack in Gaza after Hamas’s October 7, 2023 raid that resulted in 1,200 fatalities and 251 hostages. More than 53,000 have been reported dead in the Strip by Gaza’s health ministry since then.

Israeli Strikes Across Gaza Kill 114 People, Hospitals Report Casualties

<excerpt>Israeli airstrikes across Gaza have killed 114 people, including civilians, with hospitals and rescuers confirming heavy casualties.
</excerpt>

A total of at least 114 Palestinians have died from Israeli airstrikes all over the Gaza Strip since the morning, said health officials and rescuers.

Civilian Casualties in Khan Younis in Gaza

Fifty-six civilians, among them children and women, died when homes and tents where families displaced by wars had taken shelter were bombed at night in Khan Younis in the south, said the local Nasser hospital.

The Israeli military announced it attacked Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad militants in southern Gaza.

The Hamas-controlled Civil Defence department also reported fatal bombings in the town of Jabalia in the north, including on a health center and prayer space in Jabalia refugee camp, which it reported killed 13 individuals.

Escalation of Israeli Shelling in Gaza

Israeli troops have been escalating their shelling of what they claim are Hamas militants and infrastructure in preparation for an impending widening of their ground campaign in Gaza.

It follows that US President Donald Trump is visiting the area and covert talks over a fresh ceasefire and hostage swap agreement between Israel and Hamas are ongoing.

Khan Younis’ streets were full of funeral corteges and mourning families at dawn on Thursday, after residents described as the most deadly set of airstrikes on the city since Israel re-opened its military campaign nearly two months ago.

One man said to BBC Arabic’s Middle East Daily programme that Nasser hospital’s morgue was “overfull”, and that a number of bodies were stored in the corridor prior to burial.

Medics had to treat injured individuals, including burn victims, amputees, and internal bleeding sufferers, on stretchers, benches and on the floor because there were not enough beds, he explained.

Personal Tragedies Amid the Chaos

“Among those killed today were 36 children… Entire families have been wiped from the civil registry,” he added. “Tragically, this level of destruction has become part of daily life.”

A local activist uploaded one video to social media on which medics had placed dozens of bodies along the ground inside a local cemetery. An imam stood slightly to the side conducting prayers among hundreds of mourners behind him standing in orderly lines.

Personal Losses and Grief Stricken Families

A mother of six, Safaa al-Bayouk at the age of 42 reported her sons Moataz and Muath had been killed within one of the airstrikes. Six weeks old Moataz, and one year and four months Moataz.

“I gave them dinner and they went to sleep. It was a normal day… [then] the world turned upside down,” she told Reuters news agency.

Reem al-Zanaty, 13, said her uncle’s family, including her 12-year-old cousin Menna, were killed when their two homes were bombed.

Ongoing Suffering and International Concerns

Local journalist Hassan Samour, who wrote for Hamas-controlled al-Aqsa Radio, was killed with 11 of his family members when their house in the eastern neighborhood of Bani Suheila was targeted.

The Civil Defence organisation reported Thursday morning that its first responders had retrieved four bodies after Israeli raids in the northern town of Beit Lahia and two more in the central town of Deir al-Balah.

Subsequently, spokesman Mahmoud Basal reported that a rocket strike on a house in Jabalia town had killed the five members of the Shihab family.

Another 13 were killed when a health clinic and prayer hall in the al-Fakhouri neighborhood of Jabalia refugee camp were bombed, he added.

Humanitarian Crisis Unfolds

At least 80 people were killed on Wednesday in Israeli strikes across the territory, 59 of them in Jabalia refugee camp and town, hospitals and the Civil Defence said.

The Israeli military reported that it hit Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad militants in northern territory on Tuesday evening. It had issued a warning for the residents of Jabalia and surrounding areas to leave on Tuesday after rockets were fired into Israel.

Israeli orders for evacuation on Wednesday afternoon also created chaos among residents of a densely populated Gaza City neighborhood, in the north.

Continued Desperation by Gaza and US Aid Plans

Meanwhile, a US-funded group announced it would commence operations in Gaza within two weeks under a new controversially-assailed US-Israeli distribution scheme.

The Gaza Humanitarian Foundation stated it had requested Israel to permit the UN and others to resume delivery until it was established.

UN agencies have maintained they will not co-operate with the scheme – which is in accordance with one already vetted by Israel’s government – as it contravened basic humanitarian precepts.

No aid or other material has been permitted by Israel into Gaza for 10 weeks, and aid agencies have cautioned of mass starvation among the 2.1 million population.

Tensions and Blockades Continue to Escalate

Israel declared the blockade on 2 March and renewed its campaign against Hamas two weeks later, breaking a two-month truce. It stated that it wanted to bring pressure to bear on Hamas to free its remaining 58 hostages, up to 23 of whom are presumed to be alive.

Israel waged a campaign to annihilate Hamas for attacking the group across the border on 7 October 2023, when approximately 1,200 were killed and another 251 taken hostage.

At least 53,010 have been reported dead in Gaza since then, including 2,876 since Israel’s offensive renewed, the territory’s health ministry, which is run by Hamas, said.

The Department of Justice also announced the indictment of a man for assaults on Jewish people during last year’s protests.
</excerpt>

During the evening of Wednesday, Columbia University found itself at the center of new protests when some pro-Palestinian protesters invaded the university’s Butler Library. This action followed the nationwide student movement that started last year with calls for an end to the Israel-Gaza conflict.

The protestors moved through the library, and tensions grew while the situation got out of hand, leading authorities to request the New York Police Department (NYPD) to bring in reinforcements.

Protests Intensify at Columbia University

The protests that erupted at Columbia University were reflective of those that had occurred in different parts of the United States during the last year, with students clamoring for a stand to be taken against the violence in Gaza. Consequently, the university, already in the news for its reaction to similar protests, witnessed considerable intensification of unrest on its campus.

NOW: Violent Clashes as Police arrest and push against Pro-Palestine protesters as hundreds march through streets outside Columbia University pic.twitter.com/uGwDi7KBhp

— Oliya Scootercaster ? (@ScooterCasterNY) May 8, 2025

These tensions were added to by the actions of the Trump administration, which had previously condemned Columbia University for failing to adequately suppress protests, leading to the withholding of funds from the university.

Video at the scene captured protestors being taken into custody by the NYPD, with several people being observed with their hands behind their backs in zip ties. An NYPD spokesperson reports that “Multiple individuals who failed to comply with verbal direction by the NYPD to disperse were apprehended.” The number of arrests has not yet been released.

A Broader Political Backdrop

This recent wave of demonstrations has rekindled long-standing political tensions at the university. The unrest comes on the heels of a spate of criticism over Columbia University’s response to similar protests over the past year. In the meantime, tensions at the university have spilled out of the library and onto other areas of the campus, further fueling the explosive atmosphere.

A Break in the Protests: DOJ’s Announcement of Hate Crime Charges

During the chaos, one major development was when the Department of Justice (DOJ) charged 20-year-old Tarek Bazrouk with federal hate crimes. The charges resulted from attacks against Jewish people, especially during protests last year in the area surrounding Columbia University. This indictment brings to light the tension regarding the campus protests and the growing worry about intensifying violence.

Columbia University’s recent protests are a grim reminder of the thin line between free speech and campus civil unrest. As the campus becomes more polarized along political lines, it is to be seen how the institution will navigate its role in promoting academic freedom in the face of rising tensions.

</excerpt>

In a massive military operation, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) confirmed that its air force struck more than 90 Hamas terror targets across the Gaza Strip in the past 48 hours.

This large-scale assault targeted several key areas used by Hamas militants for launching attacks on Israel. The offensive follows a recent rocket attack into Israeli territory, which prompted the military response.

Key Targets Hit by IDF:

Rocket Launch Site: The location from which rockets were fired into Israel was neutralized.

Weapons Depots & Terrorist Cells: Several arms storage facilities and active militant units were bombed.

Command & Control Center: A major Hamas compound in Darg Tufah, used for operational planning, was destroyed. The site also held explosives and charges.

Northern Gaza: Forces eliminated multiple terrorists attempting to plant improvised explosive devices (IEDs) and destroyed military tunnels and structures.

Tel Sultan & Shabura Areas: Troops located and dismantled mines, terrorist hideouts, and weapon stockpiles.

IDF Official Statement:

“Our forces targeted critical Hamas infrastructure and eliminated militants who posed a direct threat. This is part of our ongoing effort to ensure the safety of Israeli civilians.”

What It Means:

This round of airstrikes is a clear escalation in the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict, aiming to degrade Hamas’ capabilities to launch coordinated attacks and use underground networks.

The IDF emphasized its commitment to minimizing civilian harm while strategically dismantling terror threats. Operations are expected to continue as long as threats persist.

</excerpt>

A video released by Hamas’s armed wing, the Ezzedine al-Qassam Brigades, on Saturday shows Israeli-American hostage Edan Alexander alive. The footage has sparked international concern and renewed calls for the release of hostages still held in Gaza.

Who is Edan Alexander?

Alexander, a 21-year-old dual citizen, was serving in Israel’s elite Golani Brigade on the Gaza border when he was abducted during Hamas’s deadly October 7, 2023 attack. He was born in Tel Aviv but raised in New Jersey, USA, and returned to Israel after high school to enlist as a lone soldier.

What’s in the Video?

The over three-minute clip shows Alexander seated in a confined room, speaking directly to the camera. He expresses a desire to return home and celebrate the holidays, specifically Passover, which symbolizes freedom in Jewish tradition. He also appears to criticize the Israeli government for its failure to secure his release—comments believed to be made under duress.

“When you sit down to mark Passover, remember that this is not a holiday of freedom as long as Edan and the other hostages are not home,” his family said in a heartfelt statement.

The Hostages and Missing Families Forum, an Israeli advocacy group, confirmed his identity and called for continued global efforts to free all remaining hostages. The family has not authorized media outlets to air the video.

Current Situation in Gaza

The video surfaced shortly after Israeli Defence Minister Yoav Gallant announced that forces had seized a new military axis between Rafah and Khan Yunis in southern Gaza. Gallant also revealed plans to expand operations across the Strip.

In response, Hamas warned that ongoing Israeli actions endanger the lives of remaining hostages. Their statement condemned the offensive for putting “defenceless civilians and prisoners at risk.”

Hostage Crisis Overview

Since October 7, Hamas has taken 251 hostages. As of now, 58 remain in captivity, with the Israeli military confirming that 34 of them have died. A brief ceasefire earlier this year led to the release of 33 hostages, including eight bodies.

Israeli-American hostage Edan Alexander’s video message brings fresh urgency to diplomatic efforts and military strategy alike. His case highlights the complex humanitarian stakes in the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict.

</excerpt>

Gaza City residents describe horror as Israeli air raids level homes, trapping scores under rubble with no rescue gear.

Gaza City residents are fighting to extricate bodies from the rubble following another round of Israeli air raids that flattened residential neighborhoods on Monday morning. Witnesses described scenes of devastation, with whole families trapped under collapsed buildings and minimal or no emergency response available.

Majdi Obeid, from Gaza City, said the Israeli army attacked the Abu-Heen family house overnight. The building, where many women and children lived, was destroyed. “When this morning the missile hit, we saw bodies scattered all over the place,” he said. “Ninety percent of the dead are women and children. The four-story building collapsed, and we don’t even know who is alive under the wreckage.”

Ahmed Jundiya, who lives in the area, explained that locals have been attempting to dig out bodies since as early as 5 a.m. (03:00 GMT) with nothing but their hands. “There are no medical crews here, no Civil Defence squads. We do not even have simple tools like hammers,” he said. “There are people alive still under the debris, but we need assistance quickly.”

Jundiya also attributed blame to the blockade of aid, stating, “Israel is not letting rescue equipment into Gaza. Children are pinned under rubble, and we cannot rescue them.”

Desperation and frustration are building among the residents, who demand an end to the conflict. “What kind of life is this?” Jundiya complained. “Arab nations do nothing as we endure this. Stop the war against us enough is enough.”

The conflict has resulted in mass destruction, with human rights groups consistently warning of the deteriorating situation in Gaza.

This move comes amid mounting regional tensions and economic pressures
</excerpt>

Recent events highlight an increasingly tense and unpredictable relationship between Iran and the United States. While both countries remain locked in a struggle over nuclear negotiations, Iran faces growing regional challenges. The Israel-Gaza conflict and Hezbollah’s weakening position in Lebanon have strained Tehran’s influence in the Middle East. Additionally, the downfall of former Syrian President Bashar al-Assad has left Iran with fewer regional allies.

U.S. Proposes a New Nuclear Deal

In March 2025, President Donald Trump sent a letter to Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, proposing direct negotiations for a new nuclear agreement. The letter set a two-month deadline for Iran’s response and warned of alternative measures if diplomacy failed. The U.S. aims to pressure Iran into compliance by tightening sanctions and keeping military options on the table.

Iran’s Response: Skepticism and Resistance

Ayatollah Khamenei rejected the U.S. proposal, expressing deep distrust over Washington’s intentions. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi reinforced this stance, stating that negotiations could only take place if the U.S. changed its pressure tactics. Tehran sees America’s strategy as an attempt to force compliance rather than engage in genuine diplomacy.

U.S. Military Posture and Strategic Interests

While U.S. Special Envoy Steve Witkoff insists the diplomatic outreach aims to prevent military conflict, National Security Advisor Mike Waltz has maintained Washington’s hardline position. The U.S. demands Iran completely dismantle its nuclear program, a condition Tehran has consistently rejected. This disagreement continues to fuel tensions, increasing the risk of confrontation.

Iran Considers UAE as a Host for Talks

Iran is internally debating the possibility of holding negotiations in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). The discussion highlights Tehran’s cautious approach, as leaders remain skeptical about Washington’s commitment to diplomacy. While some Iranian officials see an opportunity for engagement, others warn against falling into a potential U.S. trap.

The Root of U.S.-Iran Tensions: History Context

The strained relationship between the U.S. and Iran has deep historical roots, shaped by coups, wars, nuclear disputes, and assassinations. Here’s a breakdown of key events that have led to the current tensions.

1953 Coup: U.S. Overthrows Iran’s Prime Minister

In 1953, the U.S. and Britain orchestrated Operation Ajax, a coup that overthrew Iran’s democratically elected Prime Minister Mohammad Mossadegh. Mossadegh had nationalized Iran’s oil industry, which angered Western powers. The coup reinstated Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, who ruled as a pro-Western authoritarian leader. Many Iranians saw this as a betrayal of their sovereignty, leading to deep resentment against the U.S.

1979 Revolution and the Hostage Crisis

In 1979, a revolution led by Ayatollah Khomeini overthrew the Shah and established Iran’s Islamic Republic. Soon after, Iranian students stormed the U.S. Embassy in Tehran, taking 52 American diplomats hostage for 444 days. This crisis led to the complete breakdown of U.S.-Iran relations, and Washington severed all diplomatic ties with Tehran.

1980s: U.S. Backs Iraq Against Iran

During the Iran-Iraq War (1980-1988), the U.S. supported Saddam Hussein’s Iraq with intelligence, weapons, and financial aid. This further strained ties, as Iran saw U.S. involvement as an act of aggression. Additionally, in 1988, a U.S. warship mistakenly shot down Iran Air Flight 655, killing 290 civilians. This incident fueled anti-American sentiment in Iran.

Nuclear Dispute and U.S. Sanctions

In the 2000s, Iran expanded its nuclear program, claiming it was for peaceful purposes. However, the U.S. and its allies accused Iran of secretly developing nuclear weapons. As a result, Washington imposed crippling economic sanctions, severely affecting Iran’s economy.

2015 Nuclear Deal and Trump’s Withdrawal

In 2015, Iran signed the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) with the U.S., EU, and other world powers. The deal lifted sanctions in exchange for Iran limiting its nuclear activities. However, in 2018, President Donald Trump withdrew from the deal, calling it “the worst deal ever made.” The U.S. reimposed sanctions, and Iran resumed uranium enrichment beyond the agreed limits.

2020: Assassination of Qasem Soleimani

In 2020, the U.S. conducted a drone strike in Baghdad that killed General Qasem Soleimani, one of Iran’s most powerful military leaders. In response, Iran launched missile attacks on U.S. bases in Iraq, escalating fears of a direct military confrontation.

Recent Developments (2021-Present)

The Biden administration attempted to revive the nuclear deal, but negotiations stalled. Iran supplied drones to Russia for the Ukraine war, further straining ties with the West. The Israel-Gaza war (2023-2024) heightened tensions, as Iran backed Hamas and Hezbollah, increasing the risk of direct confrontation with the U.S.

Decades of broken agreements, military conflicts, and ideological differences have left U.S.-Iran relations at a boiling point. While diplomatic talks continue, tensions remain high, with both sides preparing for potential escalations.

In September 2023, a prisoner exchange between the U.S. and Iran led to the release of detainees and the unfreezing of $6 billion in Iranian assets. This event marked a rare moment of cooperation, though broader tensions persisted.

The path to renewed negotiations remains uncertain. Both nations exhibit cautious postures, with Iran demanding a change in U.S. policy and the U.S. maintaining pressure for comprehensive nuclear concessions. The coming weeks are critical in determining whether diplomatic engagement can resume.

</excerpt>

Israel’s military confirmed that its forces operating in Rafah, southern Gaza, mistakenly fired at a building belonging to the Red Cross on Monday. According to the military’s statement, the incident occurred after soldiers incorrectly identified suspects inside the building and perceived a threat to their safety.

Incorrect Identification

Following an internal investigation, the military determined that the identification was incorrect, and the building was, in fact, affiliated with the Red Cross. The statement clarified that the forces were unaware of the building’s affiliation at the time of the shooting.

No Casualties Reported

Fortunately, the incident did not result in any casualties. The military has pledged to conduct a thorough investigation to understand how the error occurred and prevent similar mistakes in the future.

Red Cross Yet to Comment

As of now, the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) has not issued an official statement regarding the incident. However, humanitarian organizations often emphasize the need to ensure the safety of aid workers and facilities in conflict zones.

Investigation Underway

The Israeli military has assured that the incident is being investigated, and steps will be taken to ensure accountability and prevent future errors.

</excerpt>

Gaza: The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) confirmed on Friday that they killed Osama Tabash, the head of Hamas’ military intelligence in southern Gaza, during an airstrike on Thursday. According to a joint statement by the IDF and Shin Bet, Tabash was a critical figure in Hamas’ operations, overseeing surveillance, targeting strategies, and intelligence gathering.

A Key Figure in Hamas Intelligence

Tabash, a longtime Hamas operative, held several crucial positions, including serving as a battalion commander in Hamas’s Khan Younis Brigade. He was known as a “significant source of knowledge” within the group and played an instrumental role in shaping Hamas’ combat strategy.

The IDF stated that Tabash coordinated Hamas’ intelligence operations in southern Gaza, directed infiltration and targeting strategies, and oversaw the unit responsible for identifying targets in Israel and Gaza.

Involvement in Terror Activities

Over the years, Tabash was involved in multiple terror activities. According to The Times of Israel, he orchestrated several attacks, including a 2005 suicide bombing at the Gush Katif junction in Gaza that killed Shin Bet coordinator Oded Sharon.

Impact on Hamas’ Intelligence Operations

The IDF highlighted that Tabash’s surveillance and targeting unit was responsible for gathering visual intelligence that guided Hamas’ attacks. During the war, his unit tracked Israeli military movements in Gaza and directed attacks on IDF troops.

“His killing is a major blow to Hamas’ intelligence-gathering efforts and its ability to target Israeli forces effectively,” the IDF said.

Ongoing Israeli Offensive in Gaza

Israel’s military offensive in Gaza has entered its fourth day, with ground forces expanding operations in both northern and southern areas of the enclave. Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant warned of an escalation, vowing to “intensify” operations and increase pressure on Hamas.

Gallant also indicated that Israel plans to implement US President Donald Trump’s voluntary migration plan for Gaza residents.

Future Implications for Hamas

The killing of Osama Tabash is expected to weaken Hamas’ operational capabilities in the region. As Israel continues its military offensive, Hamas faces growing pressure amid intensified Israeli ground and air operations.

</excerpt>

The Israel Defence Forces (IDF) launched a targeted ground operation in Gaza on Wednesday, just a day after carrying out large-scale airstrikes that ended a ceasefire with Hamas. The ground activity focuses on expanding the security zone between northern and southern Gaza and increasing Israeli control in the Netzarim Corridor.

IDF Expands Control in Gaza

According to an IDF statement, “Over the past day, IDF troops began targeted ground activities in the central and southern Gaza Strip to expand the security zone and create a partial buffer between northern and southern Gaza. As part of these operations, the troops extended their control to the center of the Netzarim Corridor.”

The Golani Brigade has been stationed in the Southern Command area and is ready for further operations in Gaza, ensuring continued action against terrorist organizations.

Israeli Defence Minister Issues Warning

Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz issued a “last warning” to Gaza residents, urging them to follow the advice of US President Donald Trump. Katz said in a video statement, “Residents of Gaza, this is the last warning. Return the hostages and remove Hamas from power, and other options will open up for you — including the possibility of leaving for other places.”

Heavy Civilian Casualties Reported

The Gaza Health Ministry reported that at least 436 people, including 183 children and 94 women, have been killed since the strikes began. Another 678 people have been injured. The Israeli military claims that it targets only militants but blames civilian casualties on Hamas, stating that the group operates in densely populated areas.

Continuing Military Strikes

The military confirmed that as part of the ongoing offensive, it struck dozens of militants and Hamas sites, including a battalion command center. Despite the ceasefire in January, the conflict has been one of the deadliest for humanitarian workers, according to the United Nations.

</excerpt>

Jerusalem: Israel has blocked the entry of food, fuel, and other goods into Gaza, echoing its siege measures from the early days of the ongoing war. This decision has drawn sharp criticism from humanitarian organizations and global leaders, who view it as a violation of international law.

The blockade aims to pressure Hamas into extending the ceasefire’s first phase. Israel insists that Hamas must negotiate the release of all hostages before moving to the next phase, which would involve discussions on a long-term ceasefire and Israeli withdrawal from Gaza.

International Backlash and Accusations

Global entities have strongly condemned Israel’s decision:

Saudi Arabia’s Foreign Ministry: Called it “a tool of extortion.”

Oxfam: Labeled it “a reckless act of collective punishment.”

Egypt: Accused Israel of “using starvation as a weapon.”

The United Nations and aid groups warn that cutting off supplies will exacerbate hunger, which has plagued Gaza’s 2 million residents throughout the conflict. Aid experts had previously cautioned about potential famine, and progress achieved under the last six weeks of ceasefire is now at risk.

Ceasefire Collapse and Stalled Negotiations

The ceasefire’s first phase ended early Sunday. Minutes later, Israel announced support for a U.S.-backed proposal to extend it until mid-April, coinciding with the Jewish holiday of Passover. However, Israel also warned that if negotiations did not progress effectively, it would resume military operations.

Hamas has insisted that discussions on the second phase of the ceasefire should have started a month ago, increasing uncertainty around the fragile truce. Following the breakdown in negotiations, Israel immediately announced the aid cutoff.

Humanitarian Impact and Economic Fallout

During the ceasefire’s first phase, approximately 600 aid trucks entered Gaza daily. These supplies included food, fuel, and essential medical aid. However, Hamas claims that only half of the agreed-upon fuel shipments were delivered and that Israel restricted the entry of livestock and animal feed, worsening food security.

With the new blockade, Palestinians rushed to markets, causing food prices to triple overnight.

“The ceasefire brought much-needed relief to Gaza, but it was far from enough to cover the immense needs,” said the Norwegian Refugee Council.

Legal and Political Repercussions

Legal experts and humanitarian groups argue that Israel’s decision violates international law:

United Nations Humanitarian Chief Tom Fletcher: Stated that Israel must allow access to vital aid under international humanitarian law.

International Criminal Court (ICC): Previously accused Israel of “using starvation as a method of warfare.”

South Africa’s Case at the International Court of Justice (ICJ): Claims Israel’s actions amount to genocide.

Several non-governmental organizations have filed a petition with Israel’s Supreme Court, demanding an interim order to prevent the aid blockade.

Kenneth Roth, former head of Human Rights Watch, criticized Israel’s move, stating, “As an occupying power, Israel has an absolute duty to facilitate humanitarian aid under the Geneva Conventions.”

What Happens Next?

The situation remains volatile, with ongoing diplomatic efforts to restore negotiations. The U.S. has yet to officially comment on Israel’s aid cutoff, and the timeline for resuming humanitarian deliveries remains uncertain.

As the crisis deepens, international pressure is mounting on Israel to reverse its decision and allow critical supplies into Gaza.

</excerpt>

Tensions between Israel and Hamas escalated on Wednesday as Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz warned that “all hell will break loose” if Hamas fails to release hostages as agreed under the Gaza ceasefire deal.

The truce, in effect since January 19, has hit an impasse, with Hamas accusing Israel of failing to meet its commitments, particularly regarding the delivery of humanitarian aid and shelter.

Ceasefire on the Brink of Collapse

The ceasefire agreement required Hamas to release 33 hostages taken during its October 7, 2023 attack on Israel. So far, 21 hostages have been freed, and in exchange, Israel has released hundreds of Palestinian prisoners.

However, Hamas delayed the latest round of releases, citing Israel’s failure to provide necessary aid, tents, and heavy equipment for Gaza. Mediators, including Egypt, have stepped in to salvage the agreement.

An Egyptian official involved in the talks suggested that both sides were nearing a resolution, with Israel reportedly committing to additional aid shipments. However, Israeli officials declined to confirm these details, insisting they had fulfilled their obligations.

Netanyahu, Katz Issue Warnings

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has ordered additional troops near Gaza, signaling readiness for military action if Hamas does not comply.

“If Hamas stops releasing the hostages, then there is no deal and there is war,” Defence Minister Katz stated, reinforcing Israel’s stance.

Katz also referenced former US President Donald Trump’s controversial proposal to relocate Palestinians from Gaza to neighboring countries—a suggestion that has been strongly opposed by Egypt and Jordan.

Hamas Rejects Threats, Demands Aid Compliance

Hamas condemned Israel’s threats, demanding that it uphold its end of the deal by ensuring proper aid distribution. Hamas spokesperson Hazem Kassem accused Israel of jeopardizing the truce by failing to meet its commitments.

Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump’s remarks about relocating Palestinians have further strained diplomatic efforts, drawing sharp criticism from regional players.

With both sides standing firm, the ceasefire hangs by a thread, raising fears of renewed hostilities.

Mediators hope this signals the conflict’s end.
</excerpt>

In a breakthrough, Hamas has agreed to a draft ceasefire in the Gaza Strip, which may finally bring an end to the protracted conflict with Israel. The deal includes the release of dozens of hostages taken since the October 7, 2023, incursion, when Hamas militants launched a deadly attack on Israeli territory.

Qatar, one of the key mediators, said both Israel and Hamas are closer than ever to finalizing the deal. The Israeli official said progress has been made in the talks, although details remain sealed and the proposal is still subject to approval from the Israeli Cabinet. All sides have kept it under wraps and spoken anonymously since the negotiations were so sensitive.

The Qatari Foreign Ministry spokesman, Majed al-Ansari, described the situation as “at the closest point ever” to a resolution but refused to elaborate further. The deal would reportedly allow the gradual release of 33 hostages over six weeks, with preference for women, children, and the elderly.

US, Egyptian, and Qatari officials have been playing a pivotal role in the negotiations, which have been ongoing for 15 months. The talks are now said to be entering their final stage, according to a statement released by Hamas, after previous failures attributed to both sides. The group has placed blame on Israel for delays, pointing to Israeli rejection or military actions following proposed agreements.

Former US President Donald Trump expressed optimism over the ceasefire, saying it could be finalized by the end of the week. The mediators have also assured Hamas that efforts will continue to secure the implementation of subsequent phases of the agreement.

The international community watches closely as the conflict edges toward a resolution, potentially bringing relief to a region long plagued by violence.

</excerpt>

Israeli airstrikes killed at least nine Palestinians in two separate attacks in the Gaza Strip on Sunday, raising the weekend death toll to 97, according to Palestinian medics. Meanwhile, US and Arab mediators intensified efforts to finalize a ceasefire agreement.

Health officials reported that an Israeli airstrike targeted a house in the Nuseirat camp in central Gaza, killing five individuals. Another airstrike in Jabalia, located in the northern part of the enclave where Israeli forces have been active for three months, resulted in four more fatalities.

There was no immediate comment from Israel regarding the incidents.

Earlier on Sunday, the health ministry in Hamas-controlled Gaza stated that Israeli strikes across the territory had killed at least 88 Palestinians and injured over 200 in the past 24 hours.

In Gaza City’s Sheikh Radwan neighborhood, relatives and neighbors rushed to the site of the Zuhd family’s house, which was hit by an Israeli airstrike late Saturday. The attack killed seven people, according to medics, while the search continued on Sunday for four others believed to be trapped beneath the rubble.

A hand protruded from the ruins, with the rest of the body buried under collapsed debris. Three men dug through the rubble with their bare hands, searching for survivors and retrieving bodies.

“Three young men, the son’s wife, and three children are still here. We retrieved this cousin of mine. Another cousin has been martyred and is now in the hospital. Approximately 11 people have been martyred here,” Ammar Zuhd, a relative, told Reuters.

Hamas Militants killed, Says Israel

The Israeli military announced on Sunday that its forces targeted over 100 locations across Gaza during the weekend, killing dozens of Hamas militants. The statement added that rocket-launching sites used for recent attacks on Israel were also destroyed.

Efforts to secure a ceasefire in the conflict between Israel and Hamas have intensified, alongside attempts to facilitate the return of Israeli hostages taken to Gaza. This push comes ahead of US President-elect Donald Trump’s inauguration on January 20.

Israeli negotiators traveled to Doha on Friday to resume talks mediated by Qatar and Egypt, while the US administration under President Joe Biden has also urged Hamas to agree to a deal.

Hamas has expressed a commitment to reaching an agreement swiftly, but the exact status of the negotiations remains unclear.

The conflict erupted following Hamas’ October 7, 2023 attack on southern Israeli communities, which killed approximately 1,200 people and resulted in around 250 hostages being taken, according to Israeli reports.

In response, Israel launched a military campaign aimed at dismantling Hamas, which has devastated large parts of Gaza, displaced the majority of its residents, and, according to the Gaza health ministry, resulted in the deaths of 45,805 Palestinians.

</excerpt>

The Israeli military reported that three rockets were launched from the Gaza Strip into Israeli territory on Friday. Meanwhile, Palestinian rescuers stated that Israeli airstrikes in Gaza had killed at least 16 people, including children.

The rocket attacks are part of a recent surge in launches from the conflict-ridden territory. Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz warned earlier this week of intensified retaliatory strikes if the attacks persist. Despite over 14 months of conflict between Israel and Hamas operatives in Gaza, such incidents had become infrequent until late December, coinciding with Israel’s ongoing three-month land and air offensive in northern Gaza.

The military confirmed that one of the rockets launched on Friday “fell adjacent to the community of Nir Am,” located near the northeastern tip of Gaza, while another landed in an unpopulated area. A third rocket triggered sirens near Beeri, opposite central Gaza. No injuries were reported from these incidents.

In Gaza, first responders reported recovering the bodies of 16 Palestinians, including several children. The airstrikes targeted Gaza City, the Maghazi refugee camp in central Gaza, and the southern city of Rafah, according to Mahmud Bassal, spokesperson for Gaza’s Civil Defence. “Friday was a harsh day for the residents of Gaza, particularly in Gaza City, due to the continuous Israeli bombardment,” he told AFP.

The fatalities were attributed to airstrikes and shelling across northern, central, and southern Gaza. Three children were killed in shelling in Gaza City’s Zietun neighborhood, and two individuals lost their lives in an airstrike in Rafah, Civil Defence reported.

The Israeli military stated that, over the past 24 hours, “the Israeli air force struck approximately 40 Hamas terrorist gathering points” throughout Gaza. It also noted that some of the targets “were embedded in areas that previously served as schools.”

“Pile of Rubble and Walls”

Bassal refuted the Israeli military’s claims, instead accusing them of “preventing food and drinking water from reaching dozens of medical staff, patients, and the injured” at the Indonesian Hospital in Beit Lahia, northern Gaza. He reported receiving distress calls from the hospital since Thursday, stating that it is now “just a pile of rubble and walls. There’s no hospital.”

Late Friday, the Israeli military denied striking the hospital in the past day or damaging any essential equipment. It added, “there is no need to evacuate the hospital” and confirmed coordination with hospital officials to facilitate the supply of humanitarian aid.

On Sunday, a United Nations aid team visited the Indonesian Hospital. In a video statement released after his visit, UN aid official Jonathan Whittall described the scene: “Around me there’s nothing but rubble and destruction.”

The Israeli military has frequently accused Hamas of using hospitals as command centers, an allegation that Hamas operatives deny. A United Nations Human Rights Office report released on Tuesday noted that “insufficient information” has been provided to substantiate Israel’s “vague” accusations of military use of hospitals.

Israel’s military has conducted intensified raids in northern Gaza since October 6, asserting that the operations aim to prevent Hamas operatives from regrouping. United Nations rights experts stated on Monday that the siege in northern Gaza appears to be an effort “to permanently displace the local population as a precursor to Gaza’s annexation.”

Bassal estimated that approximately 10,000 people remain in the northern towns of Jabalia, Beit Lahia, and Beit Hanoun, a significant decrease from the pre-war population of 150,000 to 200,000.

Earlier this week, Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz warned that Israel would escalate its strikes in Gaza if rocket attacks persist and hostages held in the territory are not released.

The conflict in Gaza began with Hamas’s attack on Israel on October 7 last year, resulting in 1,208 deaths, mostly civilians, according to an AFP tally based on official Israeli figures. Israel’s retaliatory actions have since caused the deaths of at least 45,658 people in Gaza, mostly civilians, according to the Hamas-run territory’s health ministry, figures that the United Nations deems credible.

On Friday, the Israeli military reported intercepting a missile and a drone launched from Yemen. Attacks targeting Israel by Iran-backed rebels in Yemen have intensified since a November ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah, another Iran-backed group in Lebanon. In response, Israel has conducted strikes in Yemen, including targeting Sanaa’s international airport in late December.

</excerpt>

UN General Assembly is set to vote Wednesday on a draft resolution calling for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza, following the United States’ veto of a similar measure in the UN Security Council. Although non-binding, the resolution seeks an “immediate, unconditional, and permanent ceasefire,” the release of all hostages, and unrestricted humanitarian aid access to Gaza’s war-affected citizens.

The draft resolution responds to the prolonged conflict between Israel and Hamas, which escalated after Hamas’s October 7, 2023, attack that killed 1,208 people, mostly civilians, according to an AFP tally. Hostage-taking during the attack left 251 individuals in captivity, with 96 still held in Gaza, including 34 reported dead. In retaliation, Israel’s military offensive has claimed over 44,786 lives, primarily civilians, according to Gaza’s Hamas-run health ministry, data the UN considers reliable.

Palestinian UN Ambassador Riyad Mansour called Gaza “the bleeding heart of Palestine,” urging nations to act decisively. He described the humanitarian crisis as an ongoing nightmare that demands immediate international intervention.

Israel has criticized the resolution, with Israeli UN Ambassador Danny Danon accusing the UN of enabling a “glorification of terror.” The draft also requests UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres to propose mechanisms to ensure accountability for violations of international law in Gaza.

A separate draft resolution seeks to ensure Israel respects UNRWA’s mandate, enabling continued humanitarian operations. Israel’s decision to ban the agency, effective January 28, has drawn global condemnation, including from its ally, the United States.

Israel criticized the draft summary for the upcoming G20 Summit in Brazil. Officials called it “unbalanced” and “biased” against the nation. They demanded the inclusion of Israel’s right to defend itself in the final statement.

Gideon Sa’ar’s Response

Foreign Affairs Minister Gideon Sa’ar raised the issue on X. He said he had discussions with foreign ministers from G20 nations over the weekend.

Sa’ar wrote, “Ahead of this week’s G20 Summit in Rio de Janeiro, I held phone conversations over the weekend with foreign ministers of countries participating in the forum. This was in light of information we received regarding a draft of a summary resolution that is both unbalanced and biased against Israel.”

He stressed the need to amend the statement. He highlighted key issues that the draft failed to address.

Israel’s Key Demands

Sa’ar outlined Israel’s expectations for the G20 resolution:

Recognize Israel’s right to defend itself.

Demand Hamas release hostages held for over 400 days.

Condemn Hamas and Hezbollah for their actions.

He warned of consequences if these points were ignored. Sa’ar stated, “Any such statement that fails to address these elements will harm peace and security and only serve to encourage Iran and its proxies to continue to spread instability throughout the Middle East.”

G20 Summit Details

The G20 Leaders’ Summit will be held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, on November 18–19, 2024. Leaders from 19 member countries, along with the African Union and the European Union, will participate.

Escalation of Conflict

Israel continued its military operations against Hamas and Hezbollah. On Saturday, Israeli fighter jets destroyed five buildings in Beirut’s southern suburbs. The strikes targeted munitions depots, a headquarters, and other Hezbollah infrastructure near the Tayouneh intersection.

Lebanese officials are reviewing a ceasefire proposal from the United States. However, the situation remains tense as violence persists.

Conflict Background

The Israel-Gaza conflict escalated after Hamas’s October 7, 2023, attacks. Shortly after, Hezbollah began launching daily rocket and drone strikes on northern Israel. Over 68,000 residents from the region have fled their homes. Hezbollah leaders have stated they will continue these attacks to prevent Israelis from returning.

Israel’s demands for the G20 Summit emphasize its security concerns. The ongoing conflict and rising tensions further highlight the urgent need for balanced international actions.

</excerpt>

Bassem Naim, a senior Hamas official, has announced the group’s readiness to negotiate a ceasefire in Gaza. Speaking from Doha, Qatar, Naim emphasized that any ceasefire agreement must be respected by Israel.

“Hamas is ready to reach a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip if a proposal is presented and on the condition that the proposal is respected by Israel,” Naim stated.

Call for US Involvement

Hamas has also urged the US, particularly President-elect Donald Trump, to pressure Israel into ending its military operations.

“We call on the US administration to pressure the Israeli government to end the aggression,” Naim added.

Qatar Pauses Mediation

Qatar, a key mediator in the conflict, recently paused its efforts, citing a lack of commitment from both sides.

“Qatar will resume its mediation efforts when both parties show willingness and seriousness,” said Majed Al Ansari, spokesperson for Qatar’s foreign ministry.

Background of the Gaza Conflict

The conflict escalated on October 7 last year, following coordinated attacks by Hamas on Israel, resulting in over 1,200 Israeli deaths and the abduction of 251 hostages. Israel’s retaliatory strikes in Gaza have since led to over 43,000 deaths, predominantly civilians.

This latest statement from Hamas marks a potential step towards de-escalation, contingent on mutual respect for a ceasefire agreement.

</excerpt>

President Joe Biden hailed the elimination of Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar, the mastermind behind the deadly October 7 attacks last year, as a significant step toward peace in Gaza. In a powerful statement, Biden called it a “good day for Israel and for the world,” crediting US intelligence for helping the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) in their relentless pursuit of Hamas leadership.

The US president’s words echoed a sense of relief similar to the sentiments felt after Osama Bin Laden’s death in 2011. Biden declared, “This is no doubt a day of relief and reminiscence,” adding that Sinwar’s death proves no terrorist can escape justice.

A Turning Point in Gaza?

Biden emphasized that the removal of Sinwar now offers an opportunity for Gaza’s future without Hamas in power. He hinted at the possibility of a political settlement that could create a better life for both Israelis and Palestinians. “That obstacle no longer exists,” Biden said, referring to Sinwar’s role as an insurmountable barrier to peace.

Sinwar’s Role in the Bloodshed

Yahya Sinwar was the mastermind behind Hamas’ brutal October 7 massacre, responsible for orchestrating the deaths of over 1,200 people, including Americans and citizens from over 30 countries. Describing it as the “deadliest day for Jews since the Holocaust,” Biden held Sinwar accountable for the horrific atrocities committed, including the killings of civilians, Holocaust survivors, and even children.

“Sinwar was the man most responsible for this unspeakable savagery,” Biden said.

Joint US-Israeli Effort

Biden revealed how closely the US and Israel had worked together to locate Sinwar and other Hamas leaders. “With our intelligence help, the IDF relentlessly pursued Hamas’s leaders, flushing them out of their hiding places,” Biden explained. The President also mentioned that he would soon speak with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to congratulate him on the mission’s success.

What’s Next?

Despite Sinwar’s death, Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu said the mission in Gaza is not over. As Biden expressed hope for a ceasefire and a political solution, Netanyahu hinted that hostilities may continue as Israel works to eliminate the remaining Hamas threat.

This moment could mark a turning point in the conflict, offering a glimmer of hope for peace in Gaza, but much uncertainty still looms.

</excerpt>

In a critical phone call on Wednesday, U.S. President Joe Biden emphasized the urgent need for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to conclude a ceasefire-for-hostages deal in Gaza. The White House reported that Biden also highlighted the significance of upcoming talks in Cairo, which are seen as pivotal in overcoming the remaining hurdles in the negotiations.

The call came on the heels of U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken’s recent visit to the Middle East, which ended without an agreement between Israel and Hamas. Despite months of negotiations, a ceasefire deal has remained elusive, with key issues still unresolved.

Biden’s discussions with Netanyahu also touched on broader U.S. support for Israel in the face of threats from Iran and its proxy groups, including Hamas, Hezbollah, and the Houthis. The U.S. has responded to the escalating tensions by deploying additional military assets to the region, including a guided missile submarine and the Abraham Lincoln strike group.

Netanyahu’s office, however, denied reports that Israel had agreed to withdraw its troops from the Philadelphi corridor, a strategic strip of land along Gaza’s southern border with Egypt. Hamas is demanding a full Israeli withdrawal from Gaza, including the corridor, which Israel has held since late May after destroying numerous tunnels used for smuggling weapons.

Biden’s call underscores the high stakes involved in the ongoing negotiations, as both sides continue to grapple with the complex issues at the heart of the conflict.

</excerpt>

On Monday, the health ministry in Gaza, governed by Hamas, and a Palestinian news site reported that a journalist named Ibrahim Muharab was killed by Israeli fire on Sunday in the southern part of the territory. Muharab, who worked for the Palestinian Daily News, was found dead in Hamad City, a large apartment complex built by Qatar, now reduced to ruins. His body was transported to Nasser Hospital in Khan Yunis, according to the health ministry.

Two other journalists who were with Muharab at the time of the incident were injured and also taken to Nasser Hospital. Footage obtained by AFP, though not independently verified, shows an Israeli armored vehicle advancing toward a neighborhood controlled by Hamas while gunfire is exchanged. In one of these videos, a man wearing a jacket labeled “Press” is seen fleeing from the gunfire, and a voice can be heard asking, “Ibrahim is wounded, where is he?”

About 30 people gathered at Nasser Hospital on Monday to mourn Muharab. His body was laid on the ground under a white plastic tarp, with his bulletproof jacket marked “Press” placed on top as a tribute, according to footage from AFPTV.

When contacted by AFP, the Israeli army declined to comment on Muharab’s death without receiving specific geographic coordinates of the incident and his identification details. A spokesperson for the army stated that they “have never, and will never, deliberately target journalists.”

The Palestinian Journalists Syndicate condemned Muharab’s death as an “assassination” and accused the Israeli army of conducting an “organized campaign… to kill journalists” in Gaza. Gaza journalist Ibrahim Qanan, who was at the hospital, accused Israel of “killing the truth by trying to wipe out all traces of transmission towards the outside world of what is happening in the Gaza Strip.”

The Israeli army has previously been accused of killing several journalists in Gaza, alleging that they were affiliated with Hamas or Islamic Jihad’s armed factions.

The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) reported on Monday that “at least 113 journalists and media workers” have been killed since the war between Israel and Hamas began on October 7. This period is noted as the “deadliest for journalists” since CPJ started keeping records in 1992.

</excerpt>

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken’s visit to Israel has highlighted the urgency of the current ceasefire negotiations in the ongoing Gaza conflict, which has lasted for 10 months. This trip, marking Blinken’s ninth visit since the war began, was characterized as possibly the final chance to broker a meaningful truce and facilitate a hostage and prisoner exchange.

During his 24-hour visit, Blinken met with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for a detailed three-hour discussion. Following the meeting, Blinken confirmed that Netanyahu supports the proposed ceasefire plan, which includes an initial six-week truce. This ceasefire aims to allow for a partial release of Israeli hostages in exchange for Palestinians held in Israeli jails, alongside an increase in humanitarian aid to Gaza. The plan is intended to be extendable, with further negotiations focusing on additional hostage and prisoner exchanges and a gradual withdrawal of Israeli troops.

The recent assassination of top figures from Hamas and Hezbollah has added to the volatility in the region. Despite these developments, Netanyahu’s office has publicly backed the US proposal. However, Hamas has expressed strong opposition, criticizing the plan as too favorable to Israeli demands and potentially ending further negotiations. Hamas is not directly participating in the current discussions but is being updated by mediators from Qatar and Egypt.

Complicating the negotiations are Israel’s firm positions on key issues, such as maintaining control over the Gaza-Egypt border zone, known as the Philadelphi corridor. Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu has indicated that while some concessions might be possible, others are non-negotiable. This stance has led to friction within his government, particularly with his defence minister and other security officials who believe a compromise could be reached through advanced surveillance technology.

The humanitarian situation in Gaza remains dire. Recent weeks have seen significant displacement of civilians, with new evacuation orders affecting about 170,000 people. The area deemed safe for civilians has shrunk to just 11% of Gaza’s total area. Israeli airstrikes have targeted areas previously considered safe zones, exacerbating the crisis. The UN estimates that around 40,000 people have died due to the conflict, with extensive destruction impacting the civilian population.

The ceasefire talks have been further challenged by ongoing violence. Shortly after Blinken’s arrival in Tel Aviv, a suicide bombing claimed by Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad resulted in casualties. Additionally, cross-border clashes between Israeli forces and Hezbollah fighters have resulted in further loss of life and military actions.

Blinken’s visit underscores the international community’s pressure to end the conflict and address the severe humanitarian issues in Gaza. The negotiations are now moving to Cairo, where continued efforts aim to secure a lasting ceasefire and stabilize the region.

</excerpt>

An Israeli airstrike in Gaza on Saturday killed at least 18 members of the same family, including Sami Jawad al-Ejlah, a wholesaler who coordinated with the Israeli military to supply meat and fish to Gaza. The strike targeted a house and an adjacent warehouse in Zawaida, where more than 40 civilians had taken shelter. Among the dead were al-Ejlah’s two wives, 11 of their children aged two to 22, a grandmother, and three other relatives. The Israeli military stated that the strike was aimed at “terrorist infrastructure” in central Gaza, but acknowledged that civilians were killed and said the incident was under review.

This incident occurred amid ongoing efforts by international mediators to secure a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas after 10 months of conflict. The war began on October 7 when Hamas militants attacked Israel, killing approximately 1,200 people and abducting 250 others to Gaza. Since then, Israel has conducted extensive military operations in Gaza, resulting in over 40,000 Palestinian deaths according to Gaza’s health ministry, with thousands more injured or buried under rubble.

Negotiations for a ceasefire, involving the release of hostages and a withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza, have been ongoing. While U.S. President Joe Biden expressed optimism about a potential deal, a senior Hamas official dismissed the notion that an agreement was close, calling it “an illusion.” The situation remains volatile, with mass evacuations ordered in parts of central Gaza and widespread displacement across the territory.

</excerpt>

The conflict between Israel and Hamas continues to escalate, with diplomatic efforts intensifying as U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken arrived in Israel on Sunday for urgent talks aimed at securing a ceasefire. This visit marks Blinken’s 10th trip to the region since the outbreak of the conflict on October 7, when Hamas launched a surprise attack on Israel, resulting in over 1,200 Israeli deaths and around 250 hostages taken. In response, Israel has carried out a relentless military campaign in Gaza, leading to over 40,000 deaths, as reported by the Hamas-run health ministry in Gaza, and displacing nearly the entire 2.3 million population.

The conflict has seen a significant escalation following the recent assassinations of a top Hezbollah commander and Ismail Haniyeh, the political chief of Hamas, raising fears of a broader regional war. Amid this backdrop, Blinken’s visit is part of Washington’s renewed efforts to broker a ceasefire, with the U.S. State Department stating that his primary objective is to conclude an agreement for a ceasefire and the release of hostages and detainees. Blinken is expected to meet Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and other senior leaders on Monday before traveling to Egypt.

International mediators, including the U.S., Qatar, and Egypt, have been leading efforts to negotiate a ceasefire. Last week, after two days of talks in Doha, these mediators announced that they had reached a “bridging proposal” aimed at closing the gaps between the conflicting parties. However, negotiations are set to continue in Cairo this week, with significant challenges remaining.

Hamas, which has not directly participated in the latest round of negotiations, has expressed skepticism about the prospects of a ceasefire, calling the notion of an imminent agreement “an illusion.” The group has criticized the new proposal, stating that it is too aligned with Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu’s position. Hamas has reiterated its demand that all Israeli troops must completely withdraw from Gaza as a prelude to ending the war, a condition Israel has so far been unwilling to accept beyond a temporary pause in fighting.

Israeli officials have also expressed caution regarding the negotiations. They have indicated that while some flexibility may be possible, certain demands, such as maintaining an Israeli military presence along the Gaza-Egypt border and the newly constructed Netzarim corridor, are non-negotiable. These measures, according to Israel, are necessary to prevent Hamas and other militias from rearming and regrouping.

Amid these diplomatic efforts, the situation on the ground remains dire. Israeli strikes across Gaza have continued, killing 28 people overnight into Sunday, including a woman and her six children in the central town of Deir al-Balah. The ongoing violence, coupled with the severe humanitarian crisis in Gaza, has added urgency to the ceasefire negotiations.

The U.S. and its allies are keen to finalize a ceasefire agreement during the upcoming Cairo summit, especially as attention in Washington begins to shift towards the November U.S. elections. However, with both Hamas and Israel holding firm on their respective positions, the path to a lasting ceasefire remains fraught with difficulties.

</excerpt>

In his first interview since stepping down from the presidential race, U.S. President Joe Biden revealed his decision was driven by a commitment to safeguard democracy and to prevent former President Donald Trump from regaining office. Speaking with CBS News on Sunday, Biden explained that his choice to withdraw and endorse Vice President Kamala Harris as the Democratic candidate was influenced by polling data and concerns within his party.

“The polls we had showed that it was a neck-and-neck race, would have been down to the wire,” Biden stated, adding that several Democratic colleagues feared his candidacy might jeopardize their chances in upcoming elections. Biden expressed concern that staying in the race would shift the focus away from critical issues. “You’d be interviewing me about ‘Why did [former speaker of the House of Representatives] Nancy Pelosi say…’ ‘Why did so-and-so…’ And I thought it’d be a real distraction,” he added.

At 81, joe Biden opted to back Harris in July, citing the need to “maintain democracy” and “defeat Trump.” He emphasized, “I think I have an obligation to the country to do what [is] the most important thing you can do, and that is, we must, we must, we must defeat Trump.”

Initially, polls showed Trump gaining an advantage over Biden, particularly after a debate in late June where Biden’s performance raised questions about his cognitive abilities. However, Harris’s entry into the race appears to have shifted the dynamics. A recent Ipsos poll indicated that Harris leads Trump nationally by 42 percent to 37 percent. Although the Democratic Party has yet to officially nominate Harris, there are ongoing debates within the party about her ability to secure victory against Trump.

In addition to the election, Biden addressed the ongoing conflict in Gaza during his CBS interview. He maintained that a ceasefire is still possible before his presidency ends, despite the escalating violence. “The plan I put together, endorsed by the G7, endorsed by the UN Security Council, et cetera, is still viable,” Biden said, adding that his administration is working to prevent the conflict to escalate further into a regional war.

Al Jazeera’s Washington correspondent, Alan Fisher, noted that Biden’s declining poll numbers could be attributed in part to his support for Israel in its war against Gaza, where nearly 40,000 Palestinians have been killed. Biden has faced growing criticism for his administration’s military support for Israel, which some human rights groups argue is fueling the ongoing violence.

In a joint statement issued on Thursday, Qatar, Egypt, and the U.S. called on Israel and Hamas to resume ceasefire talks, but hopes for peace were dampened by a deadly Israeli airstrike on a Gaza school on Saturday that killed more than 100 Palestinians. The attack has intensified calls for the U.S. to reconsider its support for Israel, including the provision of weapons. James Zogby, president of the Arab American Institute, voiced his frustration on social media, stating, “It’s past time to end the charade. Israel doesn’t want peace or a ceasefire. Why are we still sending Israel weapons?”

As the conflict rages on, with tens of thousands dead and wounded in Gaza, Biden’s stance on the issue remains a focal point of both domestic and international scrutiny.
