</excerpt>

Malaysia has dismantled a terror network that had recruited Bangladeshi migrant workers and financed the Islamic State group using social media and digital payments. Authorities detained 36 individuals since April and indicate that additional suspects are still being investigated.

The crackdown comes at the height of a regional slowdown in militant arrests but indicates ongoing threats in migrant-dominated industries.

Police Confirm Radical Recruitment

Malaysia’s Inspector-General of Police Mohd Khalid Ismail made the operation announcement on a televised press conference. He said Malaysian authorities arrested all 36 Bangladeshi nationals who worked in factories, construction, or service sectors. The group reportedly employed social media sites and encrypted messaging applications to recruit other Bangladeshi workers and indoctrinate them with Islamic State ideology.

The network, as per police intelligence, also collected donations from sympathizers. They remitted the funds through e-wallets and international remittance services to Islamic State-affiliated groups in Syria and Bangladesh.

Several Arrests and Deportations in Progress

Malaysian authorities have charged five of the 36 suspects arrested since April with membership in a terrorist organization under national law. They will deport 15 others for lesser involvement. Police continue to detain the remaining 16, actively interrogating them. Investigators also expect to make more arrests in the coming weeks.

Mohd Khalid stated, “We will repatriate those with low involvement to their home country, but those with high involvement will be charged according to Malaysian laws.” Police estimate that 100 to 150 individuals may have links to this radical cell.

Wider Implications for Migrant Workforce

Malaysia, where migrant workers dominate its workforce, particularly from Bangladesh, has become more wary of the threat of radicalization of foreign workers. Although significant militant activity had ceased since the 2016 Islamic State-linked attack in Kuala Lumpur, new methods of digital recruitment and financing pose a serious threat, according to authorities.

Use of encrypted remittance channels and apps makes it harder to surveil, leading Malaysian intelligence agencies to step up surveillance of online networks and financial transactions associated with suspected radicals.

Regional Security Under Threat

This case highlights the need for more robust regional counterterrorism coordination and migrant monitoring. Law enforcement authorities in Malaysia as well as Bangladesh will likely enhance coordination to stop similar networks from flourishing across borders.

As the probe goes on, Malaysia remains vigilant. Malaysia will step up checks on foreign workers, especially in industries with little background screening.

</excerpt>

Iran sentenced three individuals to death and some others to prison for their involvement in two fatal Islamic State-affiliated shootings at the Shah Cheragh shrine in Shiraz. The convictions, handed down on Sunday, are in connection with the October 2022 and August 2023 attacks, which claimed the lives of 15 individuals.

The convicted were accused by the authorities of helping in planning and carrying out the attacks, which were directed towards one of Iran’s holiest Shiite locations. The Revolutionary Court also handed down further penalties under Iran’s Islamic penal code. The rulings are indicative of Tehran’s strict approach to terrorism in the face of regional unrest.

Death Penalty for ‘Corruption on Earth’

Sadrollah Rajaei-Nasab, the province’s chief justice, upheld the death sentences. The three defendants were convicted of assisting and abetting “corruption on earth,” punishable by death in Iran. The court also sentenced the trio to 25 years’ imprisonment on a charge of “moharebeh”—or enmity against God—a capital offense under Iranian religious law.

Officials said that their role facilitated the fatal attacks on the Shah Cheragh shrine.

Prison Sentences for Other Involved Members

Besides the three sentenced to death, two other individuals received 15-year and 10-year prison terms. The court identified them as members of the Islamic State. Officials stated that the sentencing depended on each person’s level of involvement in the planning and execution of the attacks.

The judiciary also sentenced two women to five years in prison each. But their punishment comes under “Islamic leniency” laws. They will be fitted with electronic ankle bracelets and remain within a one-kilometre radius of their homes.

Wider Case Still In the Works

The court rulings are part of a broader case with charges such as weapons trafficking. Certain rulings are still pending review by Iran’s Supreme Court. As an apparent related action, authorities publicly executed two men in July 2023 for the initial Shah Cheragh attack.

Iran also issued a death sentence to a Tajik citizen in September for being connected to the second attack.

Shrine Remains a Target Amid Regional Unrest

The Shah Cheragh mausoleum is among the most sacred places for Shiite Muslims in southern Iran. The site has been subjected to repeated threats from extremist organizations in recent years. Both shrine attacks were claimed by the Islamic State.

The security forces arrested nine foreign nationals following the second attack in August 2023. These attacks highlight Iran’s persistent challenge with terrorism as it deals with wider instability in the region.

FBI investigation links him to ISIS; explosives found in his truck. President Biden condemns attack.
</excerpt>

US President Joe Biden expressed outrage and sorrow on Wednesday over the deadly New Year’s Eve attack in New Orleans that killed at least 15 people. The assailant, Shamsud-Din Jabbar, a 42-year-old US Army veteran, drove a Ford F-150 truck into a crowd of revelers on Bourbon Street, causing chaos and panic. According to the FBI, Jabbar had posted videos online hours before the attack, claiming to be inspired by the Islamic State (ISIS) and expressing a desire to kill.

Biden Describes the Attack as “Despicable”

Speaking from Camp David, President Biden described the attack as “despicable” and extended his condolences to the victims and their families. “Our nation grieves with you as you mourn and heal,” Biden said in his statement, stressing that there is “no justification for violence of any kind.”

FBI Investigation and Shocking Findings

The FBI reported that Jabbar’s vehicle was decorated with an ISIS flag and contained possible explosives. Investigators also discovered pipe bombs in coolers, one of which was placed by three men and a woman, according to a Louisiana State Police bulletin. However, the FBI has yet to confirm these details.

The investigation continues, with the FBI working to determine Jabbar’s potential connections to terrorist organisations.

Chaos on Bourbon Street: A Scene of Carnage

The attack sent shockwaves through New Orleans’ famed Bourbon Street, turning what should have been a festive celebration into a horrific scene of bloodied bodies, screaming bystanders, and destruction. Witnesses described the truck barreling through the crowd, flinging people into the air.

Zion Parsons, an 18-year-old from Gulfport, Mississippi, recalled seeing the carnage, saying, “Bodies, bodies all up and down the street, everybody screaming and hollering.”

FBI Finds Explosives and Guns in Attacker’s Vehicle

Authorities reported that multiple improvised explosives were discovered in Jabbar’s vehicle, including pipe bombs wired for remote detonation. Additionally, investigators recovered a handgun and an AR-style rifle, though the specifics of Jabbar’s associates remain unclear.

Links to Other Attacks? Investigation Expands

President Biden addressed the explosion involving a Cybertruck in Las Vegas, which occurred around the same time as the New Orleans attack. Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla, suggested a possible connection between the two incidents, claiming they could both be linked to terrorism. However, authorities have not confirmed this theory.

Ongoing Investigation and Global Attention

The tragic events in New Orleans and the unfolding investigation have garnered global attention, with the US government vowing to uncover the full details of the attack. As investigations continue, the world awaits further developments in this chilling case.

</excerpt>

President Tayyip Erdogan has called for an end to international support for Kurdish fighters in Syria following the fall of Bashar al-Assad’s regime. Speaking to reporters after attending a summit in Egypt, Erdogan emphasized that there is no longer any justification for backing the Kurdish YPG, which Turkey considers an extension of the outlawed PKK.

Turkey has long viewed the PKK, and by extension the YPG, as terrorist organizations. Erdogan likened the YPG to the Islamic State, stating, “In the upcoming period, we do not believe that any power will continue to collaborate with terrorist organizations.”

Comparisons with Islamic State

The Turkish president stressed that both the Islamic State and PKK-YPG have no place in Syria’s future. “The heads of terrorist organizations… will be crushed in the shortest possible time,” Erdogan asserted.

Germany and the U.S. on Kurdish Integration

German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock supported Turkey’s position to an extent, advocating for the disarmament of Kurdish groups and their integration into Syria’s national security structure. Meanwhile, U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern Affairs Barbara Leaf indicated that Washington is working on a “managed transition” for the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF).

Leaf acknowledged the significant role the SDF played in defeating Islamic State militants but noted that “conditions have changed dramatically.” The U.S. currently has around 2,000 troops in Syria supporting the SDF.

Turkey’s Vision for a New Syria

Erdogan outlined his vision for a unified Syria where all ethnic and religious groups could coexist peacefully. He insisted that eradicating the PKK and its affiliates is essential for achieving this goal. “The PKK terrorist organization and its extensions in particular have reached the end of their lifespan,” he said.

SDF’s Response and Future Role

In a notable statement, SDF commander Mazloum Abdi revealed that foreign Kurdish fighters, including PKK members, had been aiding the SDF but would withdraw if a ceasefire agreement was reached with Turkey. However, a Turkish Defense Ministry official dismissed any talks of a truce, maintaining that Ankara will continue its operations until all Kurdish fighters lay down their arms and leave Syria.

The developments come as tensions remain high between Turkey and the U.S., with Ankara repeatedly demanding an end to American support for Kurdish fighters. Hostilities have escalated since Assad’s downfall, with Turkey and its Syrian allies capturing Manbij from the SDF earlier this month.

</excerpt>

Shamima Begum, along with 65 other British citizens linked to the Islamic State, faces an uncertain future in the Kurdish-controlled prisons and camps of northeastern Syria, as Turkish-backed rebel forces intensify their offensive against Kurdish military groups. The escalation has raised concerns about the safety of detainees, including women, children, and former IS fighters, as the security of the area deteriorates.

Since November, Turkey has launched attacks on the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), which have been pivotal in the fight against IS. The SDF’s primary focus on counter-ISIS operations is now at risk, according to US officials, as the Turkish offensive diverts their attention. John Kirby, White House spokesperson, voiced concerns over the potential impact on the fight against IS, noting that the Turkish-backed Syrian National Army (SNA) operations could undermine the ongoing anti-ISIS mission.

The camps, such as al-Hawl and Roj, house about 50,000 detainees, with approximately 20 women, 10 men, and 35 children being British nationals or former UK citizens. Human rights organizations, including Reprieve, argue that the UK should repatriate these individuals, particularly given the volatile situation in the region. The charity emphasizes that most detainees are children, with many women, including Begum, coerced into joining IS.

Despite these concerns, the UK government remains reluctant to alter its stance on repatriation. The UK has revoked the citizenship of Begum and others, citing national security risks, and considers repatriations on a case-by-case basis.

As Turkish-backed forces advance in Syria, experts warn that if the SDF is forced to withdraw from the camps, the security of detainees could be compromised, heightening the uncertainty surrounding their fate.

Authorities are investigating his links to terrorism after the Islamic State claimed responsibility, describing him as a “soldier.” The suspect is connected to a local refugee home.
</excerpt>

Authorities have identified the suspect in a deadly stabbing spree in Solingen, western Germany, as a 26-year-old Syrian man. The attack, which occurred during a festival celebrating the city’s 650-year history, left three people dead and eight injured. The suspect turned himself in and admitted to the crime, according to a joint statement by Duesseldorf police and prosecutors, who noted that his involvement is under thorough investigation.

The arrest followed a 24-hour manhunt, and the suspect is reportedly linked to a refugee home in Solingen, which authorities searched on Saturday. Der Spiegel, citing unnamed security sources, reported that the suspect’s clothing was stained with blood, though police have not commented on this detail.

The Islamic State group claimed responsibility for the attack, describing the perpetrator as a “soldier of the Islamic State” who acted in “revenge for Muslims in Palestine and everywhere,” via its Telegram channel. However, the group did not provide evidence to support this claim, leaving the nature of the suspect’s connection to the group unclear.

Hendrik Wuest, the premier of North Rhine-Westphalia, condemned the incident as an act of terror.

</excerpt>

The Islamic State group claimed responsibility for a knife attack in Solingen, Germany, on Saturday, which resulted in the deaths of three people and injuries to eight others, as reported by its Amaq news site. The attack occurred during a city festival on Friday night, where an assailant randomly stabbed festival-goers. According to the Islamic State, the attacker targeted Christians and is described as a “soldier of the Islamic State,” acting “to avenge Muslims in Palestine and everywhere.”

Police Response and Investigation

Following the attack, police initiated a raid on an asylum seekers’ residence in Solingen, utilizing special forces. A police spokesperson mentioned that the raid was prompted by specific tips received, leading to increased police activity in the area. Special police units joined the search for the unknown knifeman, who targeted individuals’ throats during the attack.

A 15-year-old boy was arrested early Saturday, suspected of having prior knowledge of the planned attack but not being the perpetrator. The boy’s arrest followed reports from two female witnesses who overheard a conversation that aligned with the events of the attack.

Authorities’ Statements

Markus Caspers, from the counterterrorism section of the public prosecutor’s office, stated at a news conference that the motive for the attack has not yet been identified. He did not rule out terrorism as a possibility but did not provide further details.

Thorsten Fleiss, chief of operations for the German police on the night of the attack, mentioned that police searches and investigations were ongoing throughout North Rhine-Westphalia. Fleiss also reported that several knives had been found, although it was unclear if any were used in the attack.

Community and Government Reactions

Churches in Solingen opened their doors to provide spaces for prayer and emergency pastoral care following the attack. German Interior Minister Nancy Faeser visited Solingen, expressing the government’s commitment to supporting the city and its residents. She emphasized that such an attack should not divide society, a sentiment echoed by the Minister-President of North Rhine-Westphalia, Hendrik Wüst, who referred to the incident as “an act of terror against the security and freedom of this country.”

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz called for swift justice for the perpetrator, emphasizing the gravity of the attack. President Frank-Walter Steinmeier also expressed his shock and condemned the violence, urging unity against hatred.

Broader Impact and Safety Measures

In response to the attack and increasing concerns about knife violence in Germany, Interior Minister Nancy Faeser recently proposed stricter weapons laws, suggesting a reduction in the allowed blade length for knives carried in public. This proposal aims to curb incidents of knife violence in public spaces.

</excerpt>

Intelligence agencies heighten vigilance against IS-inspired cells following the core Islamic State’s call for ‘lone wolves’ globally to carry out mass attacks on ‘infidels’ to mark the 10-year anniversary of the ‘Caliphate’ declaration in Ramadan 2014.

Islamic State spokesman Abu Hudhayfah al-Ansari issued a statement urging Muhajirin (foreign fighters) from various nations to join their ranks. He emphasized the significance of the Caliphate’s establishment as a pivotal moment in history and highlighted their global expansion, extending as far as Mozambique in Africa.

While initially established in 1999 by Jordanian extremist Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, it wasn’t until 2014 that ISIS rebranded itself as the Islamic State and appointed Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi as their Caliph.

In his recent speech, Ansari commended the Moscow terror incident and encouraged Muslims to relocate and join Islamic State affiliates across the globe.

“Islam will eventually prevail in the world as foretold by the Prophet,” he added.

In a 41-minute-long audio speech called “By Allah, this matter will be made possible,” he also slammed terror outfit al-Qaeda for straying away from their so-called “path”.

Agencies have limited information about al-Ansari, acknowledging his assumption of the spokesperson role in August last year, succeeding Abu Omar al-Muhajir after his arrest.

In his previous speech in Jan, Ansari had said: “Monotheism is the goal, and jihad is the path …the war with the Jews will not end in a one-state solution or two-state solution, as nationalists believe. It is a religious ideological war that will continue till we kill their antichrist.”

Ansari advocated for various violent methods to target infidels, including explosives, incendiary bombs, bullets, buses, and knives. With specific references to Christians and Jews, agencies have urged local law enforcement to enhance surveillance around Jewish establishments, community centers, and Chabad Houses in Delhi and Mumbai.

“Keeping in view the present scenario, adequate arrangements may be made by the local police. Presence of uniformed officers at major gatherings and cultural sites may be boosted to prioritise public safety, exercising an abundance of caution. To enhance security, religious centres may be advised to restrict access to their premises, ensure the functionality of security cameras and alarms, conduct perimeter sweeps and screen mail and packages,” an internal note reads.

The trailer depicts Adah portraying IPS Officer Neerja Madhvan, who is resolute in her mission to eradicate Naxalism from India.
Six members of the Islamic State were killed by Taliban security forces in an overnight operation in Kabul, Afghanistan, according to a spokesman for the administration of the ruling party on Saturday.

The Islamic State members killed in the raid on their hideout were involved in two major attacks in recent weeks, one on a city mosque and the other on a tutoring institute in which dozens of female students were killed, said the spokesman, Qari Yusuf Ahmadi.

“They were the attackers of the Wazir Akbar Khan mosque and also … of Kaaj Institute,” said Ahmadi, who said one Taliban security force member was killed in the operation.

For either attack, no group took ownership.

53 individuals were killed in the explosion at the female education centre of the Kaaj Institute on September 30, the majority of them girls and young women.

On September 23, a blast near a mosque in Wazir Akbar Khan, a heavily protected neighbourhood that had housed a “Green Zone” of embassies and foreign force bases, resulted in at least seven fatalities and more than 40 injuries.

After decades of fighting, the Taliban claim they have concentrated on safeguarding the nation since taking power in 2021.

However, a number of explosions have recently jolted the nation’s capital and other urban centres, and the United Nations has warned that security is deteriorating.

The Taliban are enemies of the Afghan branch of the Islamic State, known as Islamic State Khorasan after a former name for the area.

In 2014, Islamic State-affiliated fighters first showed up in eastern Afghanistan and eventually spread to other regions.
