</excerpt>

Pakistan is working on a nuclear-capable intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) capable of hitting the United States, according to a detailed paper released by Foreign Affairs.

The report warns that if Pakistan acquires or builds such a weapon, Washington will consider it a nuclear rival, just like Russia, China, and North Korea.

“If Pakistan develops an ICBM, Washington will have no option but to view the nation as a nuclear rival. No nation with ICBMs capable of striking America is a friend,” US officials told the report.

Strategic Shift Causes Alarm in Washington

This report follows growing speculation that Islamabad is expanding its nuclear capabilities, reportedly with Chinese help, after India’s Operation Sindoor launched last month.

Pakistan has consistently claimed that it designed its nuclear programme exclusively to deter India and developed short- and medium-range missiles for that purpose. Significantly, in 2022, Pakistan successfully tested the Shaheen-III, a surface-to-surface medium-range ballistic missile with a range of more than 2,700 km, sufficient for hitting several Indian cities.

An ICBM represents an entirely different class of weapon—it travels over 5,500 km and carries either nuclear or conventional warheads. Up to now, there is no ICBM in Pakistan’s listed arsenal.

Why Pakistan May Be Building an ICBM

The Foreign Affairs report surmises that Pakistan is possibly seeking an ICBM to deter any prospective US preventive strike meant to neutralize its nuclear potential. These concerns may have been strengthened due to recent US airstrikes against Iranian nuclear sites.

Experts opine that the missile would also be a strategic warning to the US against interfering if hostilities flare up again between India and Pakistan. The move has perturbed Washington, which has already initiated penal action.

The US 2023 slapped new sanctions on Pakistan’s long-range missile programme. The US government froze the assets of the National Development Complex, which controls Pakistan’s missile systems, and three related entities, and prohibited them from doing business with American companies. Islamabad reacted to the sanctions as “biased.”

Global Implications and NPT Status

Neither India nor Pakistan is a signatory to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), the central international agreement for averting the proliferation of nuclear weapons and promoting peaceful nuclear energy use.

As alarm about this trend grows, Pakistan’s development of an ICBM would radically redefine the global nuclear balance and complicate US policy in South Asia even further.

</excerpt>

Despite intense pressure from the Pakistani embassy, Malaysia refused to halt Indian outreach programs, which was a glaring diplomatic setback for Islamabad. Citing their common Islamic identity, the Pakistani mission urged Malaysian authorities to cancel all ten of the events planned by the Indian delegation, which was led by JDU MP Sanjay Jha. However, Malaysia, denied the appeal and permitted the programs to continue under India’s Operation Sindoor initiative.

Before the Indian delegation’s arrival, Pakistani authorities tried to sabotage the initiative. They went to Malaysian authorities and said, “We are an Islamic country, you are an Islamic country. don’t listen to the Indian delegation.” The appeal sought to cancel all ten events scheduled in Kuala Lumpur.

Malaysia Stands Firm

Malaysia rejected Pakistan’s request. Authorities granted completely clearance for all the ten programmes scheduled. Sources informed that Malaysia would not associate diplomacy with religious feelings. It also listed the Kashmir dispute’s current status in the United Nations as a reason not to meddle.

Malaysia was the last leg in a five-country diplomatic visit involving Japan, South Korea, Singapore, and Indonesia. The nine-member Indian team that arrived on Saturday in Kuala Lumpur met leaders from Malaysia’s People’s Justice Party (PKR). The PKR delegation was headed by YB Sim Tze Tzin, who was once a cabinet minister under Mahathir Mohamad.

Cross-Party Indian Team in Action

Among the Indian delegation were MPs from both sides of the political divide—BJP’s Aparajita Sarangi, Brij Lal, Pradan Baruah, and Hemang Joshi; TMC’s Abhishek Banerjee, CPM’s John Brittas, Congress’s Salman Khurshid, and ex-Indian diplomat Mohan Kumar.

They emphasized India’s determination during Operation Sindoor and its stringent zero-tolerance policy towards terrorism.

PoK, Terror Strikes Discussed

The delegation informed Malaysian leaders of India’s precision attacks on terror launchpads in Pakistan. They described India’s “new normal” in addressing cross-border terror threats. Addressing a Sunday function with the Indian diaspora in Kuala Lumpur, TMC’s Abhishek Banerjee announced that India would hold discussions only with Pakistan if it surrendered Pakistan-occupied Kashmir.

On his return from the tour, Sanjay Jha informed PTI that all five nations condoled the Pahalgam terror attack victims. He said political leaders in other countries valued India’s specific response to terror infrastructure, reinforcing international legitimacy of Operation Sindoor.

</excerpt>

A historic bill banning child marriages was passed by the Pakistani National Assembly, but it only applies to citizens of Islamabad, the country’s capital. The law imposes severe penalties, such as jail term and heavy fines, and increases the legal marriage age for both boys and girls from 16 to 18. Even though the practice is still permitted in other regions of Pakistan, observers have hailed it as a major turning point in the nation’s continuous fight for gender equality and children’s rights.

Nevertheless, this protection is limited to Islamabad. Underage marriages are still permitted in the rest of Pakistan. While clerics have denounced this action as “un-Islamic,” activists have hailed it as a breakthrough.

Strict Penalties for Violators

Child marriage in Islamabad are now illegal under the new law. If a man over the age of 18 marries a minor, he could spend two to three years in prison. Additionally, he will pay a fine of up to Rs 100,000. If the accused can demonstrate that the marriage did not involve a minor, the law will grant some leniency.

Furthermore, any sexual act that takes place in such a union will now be considered statutory rape. The bill establishes a distinct legal boundary that puts the rights and safety of children first.

International Praise and Local Pushback

The bill was hailed by the UN as a “landmark advancement in safeguarding children’s rights.” It emphasized how the law supports the UN’s Sustainable Development Goal No. 5, which is to eradicate child marriage by 2030. Senator Sherry Rehman and Dr. Sharmila Faruqui were praised by the UN for their support of the law. “This bill sends a powerful message… that women’s rights are protected at the top,” Rehman said.

Not all facets of society, though, applauded the action. Leaders in politics and religion have referred to the bill as “un-Islamic.” They contend that once a girl reaches puberty, marriage should be permitted and should continue to be a family decision.

Hope for National Reform

The bill gives activists hope, despite its narrow scope. They think that other provinces may enact comparable legislation as a result of Islamabad’s victory. In a nation where child marriage is still prevalent, observers refer to it as a “important step forward.” The law might serve as a social and legal model for reform across the country.

The capital of Pakistan has taken a risky move. Now the rest of the country has to decide between tradition and progress.

</excerpt>

India on May 13, 2025, expelled a member of the Pakistan High Commission in New Delhi after discovering his espionage activities. The person, operating secretly as an ISI agent in diplomatic cover, was made persona non grata. Indian officials directed him to depart within 24 hours.

In a tit-for-tat retaliatory move, Pakistan had expelled a member of the Indian High Commission staff in Islamabad. Pakistan’s Foreign Office summoned India’s Charge d’Affaires and served the notice of expulsion on the Indian diplomat for allegedly carrying out activities “incompatible with his diplomatic status.” This action was a mirror image of India’s move in both tone and timing.

Espionage Sparks Diplomatic Flashpoint

The diplomatic crisis began when Indian security officials discovered an espionage network using the Pakistan High Commission in New Delhi. A Pakistani official purportedly shared classified information with handlers and conducted undercover surveillance operations. The discovery followed increased tensions across the region after a terror strike in Pahalgam, which killed 26 civilians.

Another brainless tit-for-tat move by Pakistan.

India caught an undercover ISI operative working as a staffer at the Pakistan High Commission in New Delhi, so Islamabad followed suit and declared an Indian diplomat persona non grata, because why not.

What a banana republic. pic.twitter.com/MtvRnMwPyH

— Sonam Mahajan (@AsYouNotWish) May 13, 2025

India took decisive action. It used the Vienna Convention to expel the official, citing unmistakable proof of espionage. The Ministry of External Affairs emphasized that such conduct was unacceptable and went against all diplomatic standards.

Islamabad Reacts on Expected Lines

Hours later, Pakistan retaliated — as anticipated — with a mirror response. Islamabad’s action, while diplomatically worded, was generally understood to be one of retaliation, not new intelligence. “Because why not,” as X analysts sarcastically surmised, referencing the traditional symmetry of India-Pakistan diplomatic standoffs.

Pakistan’s Foreign Office announced that the Indian diplomat was persona non grata and called for him to leave in 24 hours. Islamabad authorities defended the act as required for “maintaining diplomatic parity.”

Traditional Pattern of Retaliation

The tit-for-tat expulsions highlight the fragility of India-Pakistan relations. With tensions in intelligence spilling over into diplomacy, both countries appear locked into a familiar pattern of provocation and response. Unless both governments shift towards long-term dialogue, such confrontations will continue to undermine any chance of regional stability.

The tit-for-tat expulsions illustrate how tenuous India-Pakistan relations are. As intelligence tensions bleed into diplomacy, each seems trapped in a self-fulfilling cycle of provocation and retaliation. Unless both governments change course toward persistent dialogue, such incidents will keep eroding any possibility for regional stability.

</excerpt>

In a major diplomatic turn, the World Bank has strongly disassociated itself from news that it would mediate India’s decision to put on hold the Indus Water Treaty (IWT) with Pakistan. The refusal is a setback to Islamabad, which had promised to take its protest to the international financial institution after India described the move as “unilateral and illegal.”

World Bank Clarifies Its Role

Against the backdrop of increased tensions between the two neighbours, World Bank President Ajay Banga has made it categorically clear that the institution will play only its chartered role under the treaty. “There’s a lot of speculation in the media about how the World Bank will step in & fix the problem but it’s all bunk. The World Bank’s role is merely as a facilitator,” Banga was quoted by India’s Press Information Bureau (PIB). This clarification serves to shut the door on Pakistan’s hopes of employing the World Bank as leverage to turn around India’s position.

“We have no role to play beyond a facilitator. There’s a lot of speculation in the media about how the World Bank will step in & fix the problem but it’s all bunk. The World Bank’s role is merely as a facilitator,” World Bank President, Ajay Banga on Indus Waters Treaty… pic.twitter.com/s19jkAl7WG

— ANI (@ANI) May 9, 2025

India Responds After Kashmir Terror Attack

India suspended the treaty after a terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir that claimed 26 civilians’ lives. The Indian government cited “irrefutable proof” of Pakistani nationals’ participation in the attack.

Consequently, New Delhi not only suspended the treaty but also took other stringent diplomatic actions, such as closing the Attari-Wagah border, cancelling visas for Pakistani nationals, and expelling military officials from its soil.

India’s Long History of Adherence to the Treaty

Indian Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri, in a news conference on May 8, stated that India was forced into action following a series of provocations and hindrances by Pakistan. “We sent several letters to them, requesting for negotiation to discuss modification of this treaty. India has, for six plus decades, honoured this treaty,” Misri stated. He further added, “Pakistan is the one which has been acting in violation of this treaty. Pakistan is the one acting in violation of treaty, deliberately creating roadblocks in India exercising its legitimate rights over the western rivers.”

Understanding the Indus Water Treaty

The IWT, which was originally facilitated by the World Bank in 1960, clearly specified the division of the Indus River system. Accordingly, India was assigned complete rights to the Eastern rivers — Ravi, Beas, and Sutlej — while Pakistan, on the other hand, was awarded the Western rivers — Indus, Jhelum, and Chenab. The treaty does permit India some rights to the Western rivers for non-consumptive purposes like domestic use, farming, and hydroelectric projects, but forbids large-scale storage.

Despite this, India has traditionally respected the provisions. Yet, New Delhi authorities claim that Islamabad has consistently breached the spirit of the deal and used legal and procedural means to inhibit legitimate Indian projects.

Watch the unfolding situation in the capital.
</excerpt>

Dread filled Pakistan’s capital city, Islamabad, on Wednesday night after authorities made hasty public announcements ordering citizens to remain indoors and turn off all lights. The abrupt and frightening order has sent panic waves sweeping across the city, with citizens rushing for cover amidst mounting confusion.

Urgent Announcements Across Islamabad

The loudspeakers reportedly reverberated across different residential areas in the capital, informing residents to evacuate the streets and black out houses. The panic and tone implied a threat impending, even if no official statement had been put out by the Pakistani authorities yet.

#BREAKING: Panic grips across Islamabad in Pakistan. Announcements are being made asking common people to go inside their house and shut down all lights. pic.twitter.com/shXrACZNJg

— Aditya Raj Kaul (@AdityaRajKaul) May 7, 2025

The mood in Islamabad soon became tense as whole neighborhoods were plunged into blackouts. Locals caught up in the surprise were in a frenzy of trying to follow instructions, with social media sites filled with unverified speculation between security drills, aerial attacks or possible internal uprisings.

Background of Escalating Tensions

This is happening in the wake of increased tensions between India and Pakistan following the Indian military’s launch of Operation Sindoor earlier on Wednesday. The operation, which consisted of several missile attacks on locations in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir, has further heightened the security situation in the region. The Indian army claimed to have struck nine locations, while the Pakistani army says it retaliated by downing several Indian military aircraft. At least 26 Pakistanis were known to have died in six targeted cities, says Pakistan’s military’s media wing director general, Lieutenant Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry.

The military operations follow a recent strike in Pahalgam, a favorite tourist hotspot in Jammu and Kashmir, killing and injuring several people. While Operation Sindoor is being considered a reaction to the attack, the repercussions have resulted in heightened security and widespread panic.

Heightened Security and Public Reaction in Islamabad

The public response in Islamabad mirrors the wider security issues in the country, where Pakistan has been dealing with several issues, including financial pressure, terrorism activity, and tense civil-military relations. Considering the prevailing military operation and the unstable environment, the announcement of the blackout is being understood by some people as a preparatory response to heightened threats.

Security personnel have been put on high alert, according to reports, with additional checkpoints and more patrolling in sensitive areas. None of these apparent measures has been communicated officially by the Pakistan Army, Interior Ministry, or Islamabad Police regarding the reason for the emergency broadcasts.

Speculation and Absence of Official Clarity

Some defense experts have noted that the same blackout directives are usually found within wartime air raid regulations or top-level threat warnings. But without a confirmed reason, the same is only speculative.

Citizens are being asked to stay calm and comply with all safety regulations until they hear further. Foreign observers are following the events very closely, although nearby governments, including the Indian government, have made no comments so far.

While Islamabad is still running on a whispered alert level, only increasing concern has been caused by the absence of official word. The government is expected to provide clarification to relieve concern and detail why such drastic steps had to be taken suddenly.

</excerpt>

Pakistan is now confronted with an increasing internal tempest in the wake of the Pahalgam terror strike—India’s worst civilian attack after 26/11. With the death toll rising to 26, New Delhi has initiated a series of robust diplomatic and strategic moves, such as suspending the Indus Waters Treaty and cancelling Pakistani visas.

In the backdrop of Indian revenge attacks, an upsurge of dissent sweeps across Pakistan’s religious and military establishments, as viral clips are circulating featuring clerics and regional police brazenly disobeying the Pakistani military.

Clerics Blame Establishment for Oppression

One of the most widely shared items on the social media site X is a video of an Islamabad cleric from the infamous Lal Masjid giving a passionate sermon. The cleric denounces the Pakistani establishment, declaring, “Pakistan’s fight is a fight of nationality, not of Islam, and that there is more oppression in Pakistan than in India.”

— Husain Haqqani (@husainhaqqani) May 4, 2025

He then asks the audience a blunt question: whether they would support Pakistan in a war against India. The deafening silence that ensues is palpable—no one lifts their hand. The video has become viral, capturing the eroding public support for Pakistan’s military leadership at a time of high stakes.

Another incendiary clip is of a cleric from restive Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province. His appeal mirrors the anger of the Pashtun people, which has for years blamed the state for violence and marginalization.

“You have harmed Pashtuns so much – you think we will stand by you? You think we will chant “Zindabad” for you? Tell me – Am I right or wrong? You have oppressed our land.You have oppressed us Pashtuns,” the Maulana is heard uttering.

Individuals surrounding him nod in assent as he goes on, “Which Pashtun child have you not left in tears? O’Lord have these soldiers’ children cry the way Pashtun children cried. Let them mourn in their homes now. In Swat and Malakand, every family is in mourning. Every family has lost two or three people. You think Pashtuns will support you?“

Tensions Escalate as Police Block Army Convoy

The violence is not confined to religious leaders. Tensions between the Pakistan Army and the police also emerged recently in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. A viral clip showed a dramatic standoff in Lakki Marwat, where Pashtun police officers stopped an army convoy from entering a police station.

One police officer, standing on a balcony and pointing his gun at army men, can be heard yelling, “Idhar Kya Kar Rahe Ho. Aapka General Bhi Aa Jaye Phir Bhi kuch Nahi Kar Sakte Ho (What are you doing here? We won’t allow you even if your General is here).”

He adds defiantly, “Yeh Lakki Marwat police hai. Yaad Rakhna (This is Lakki Marwat Police. We are not scared of anyone).”

Global Pressure Mounts on Pakistan

While India speeds up diplomatic efforts to isolate Islamabad, global players are also following suit. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has reportedly called Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, urging him to condemn the April 22 terror attack in Kashmir in strong terms and help with the ensuing investigation.

Already economically unstable and politically volatile, Pakistan now has a vital test of cohesion from within. The escalating civil and institutional resistance laid bare by these viral videos is symptomatic of an escalating crisis at home, just as tensions escalate overseas.

</excerpt>

Rallies broke out outside the Indian High Commission office in Islamabad on April 24, 2025, after protesters expressed outrage against India for its recent activity following the catastrophic terror attack that took place at Pahalgam, Jammu & Kashmir. The environment turned volatile rather quickly, and some of the protesters tried scaling the diplomatic compound gates while other protesters charged in the direction of the building. Heavy security contingents were released in an effort to keep matters under control while avoiding any possibility of escalation.

India’s Retaliatory Actions Spark Outrage

The demonstrations follow India’s series of retaliatory actions after the Pahalgam terror attack, which killed 27 civilians, one of the deadliest attacks in recent times. India’s government has accused Pakistan-based militants of carrying out the attack, further straining relations between the two nuclear-armed neighbors. In retaliation against the Pahalgam attack, India suspended the Indus Waters Treaty, ordered Pakistani military advisers out of its high commission in New Delhi, and restricted the travel of Pakistani nationals.

Escalating Tensions Along the Border

The escalating military and diplomatic tensions have already caused considerable unrest along both sides of the border. In Pakistan, the government has decried India’s move, while nationalist forces have taken the opportunity to protest against what they characterize as India’s “aggressive” posture. The Pahalgam attack on civilians at a heavily visited tourist destination has inflamed widespread wrath among Pakistanis, who see the Indian government’s move as unwarranted.

Security personnel were observed driving the crowds back, using barricades and patrolling around the area of the High Commission. Reports suggest that the protesters had become more vocal, chanting slogans against India’s policies, especially following what they perceive as “unprovoked actions” against Pakistan.

Social Media Shows Escalating Frustration

Video posted on social media, depicts huge crowds of protesters outside the embassy, with some trying to climb over the gates. The pictures depict increasing frustration and anger at India’s reaction to the Pahalgam attack.

Tense scenes outside the Indian High Commission in Islamabad as protesters rally against India’s recent actions. Some attempted to scale the gate, while others are moving toward the mission. Heavy security deployed. #Islamabad #Protest #pahlagam#IndiaPakistan pic.twitter.com/6WvMcKXpne

— Ghulam Abbas Shah (@ghulamabbasshah) April 24, 2025

The Indian High Commission has so far remained silent on the protest, but the diplomatic compound is still on high alert. As both countries prepare themselves for further confrontation, the international community looks on closely. With these worsening tensions, the situation in Islamabad and on the other side of the border remains unstable, with the likelihood of future protests and worsening diplomatic fallout.

After militants attacked a check post on the Punjab-Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) border early Saturday, March 8, authorities in Islamabad went on high alert. Reports indicate that 15-20 armed men carried out the assault. Consequently, officials immediately sealed all entry and exit points to the Red Zone for an indefinite period.

Notably, the Red Zone houses key government buildings, including the President’s House, Prime Minister’s House, National Assembly, Senate, Supreme Court, Foreign Office, and the diplomatic enclave. As a result, authorities took swift action to secure the area.

Militants Use Heavy Weapons

According to police sources, the attackers used rocket launchers and other heavy weapons.

“The attackers approached the post in small groups from multiple directions but were detected through thermal imaging cameras. The security personnel responded immediately with machine guns and mortar fire, forcing the assailants to retreat,” said a Punjab Police officer.

Since militants have repeatedly targeted this check post, security forces remained prepared. In fact, this was the second attack within a week. Similarly, last year, militants also attempted to seize it but failed.

Director General of Punjab Police Usman Anwar emphasized the force’s resilience. “Punjab Police have so far successfully repelled 19 similar assaults on border checkpoints,” he said. “Our vigilant officers have ensured that these elements fail in their nefarious designs.”

Militant Attacks Increase Across Pakistan

Meanwhile, Pakistan has witnessed a sharp rise in militant violence in recent months.

A report from the Pakistan Institute for Conflict and Security Studies (PICSS) highlighted alarming statistics. Civilian deaths increased by 175% in February compared to January. Moreover, the southwestern province of Balochistan suffered the most casualties.

The report recorded 79 militant attacks in February, which resulted in 55 civilian deaths and 47 security personnel fatalities. Additionally, 81 security personnel and 45 civilians sustained injuries.

In response, security forces launched counter-militancy operations. So far, they have eliminated 156 militants, injured 20, and arrested 66 suspects.

“February 2025 marked the first month since August 2024 in which civilian fatalities surpassed those of security forces,” the report stated. “Civilian deaths rose by 175 per cent compared to January 2025, when 20 civilians were killed, while security forces’ casualties declined by 18 per cent, down from 57 in January.”

Therefore, as Pakistan faces increasing militant threats, authorities continue to strengthen security and take strict measures to prevent future attacks.

</excerpt>

Hundreds of lawyers rallied in Islamabad on Monday to protest the decision of Judicial Commission of Pakistan to elevate six high court judges to the Supreme Court. Protests flared as lawyers demanded an adjournment of the JCP meeting, which went ahead despite the opinion of four Supreme Court judges and legal groups.

Protests erupted at several points in the capital, with the lawyers’ committee holding a protest near D-Chowk. The protests became violent when security forces clashed with the protesters while trying to enter the key areas. The police retaliated by blocking several major roads that led to the Red Zone, causing traffic congestion all over the city. Metro bus services were suspended at various points, causing more dislocation to the daily commuters.

Protesters also staged a significant number of demonstrations at Serena Chowk, protesting the postponement of the JCP meeting. Former Prime Minister Imran Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf party strongly opposed the appointments and joined the protests.

Controversial Appointments and Legal Challenges

The Judicial Commission is set to fill eight vacant Supreme Court seats under the controversial 26th Constitutional Amendment, which includes four members from Parliament. The newly appointed judges are Justice Muhammad Hashim Khan Kakar, Justice Muhammad Shafi Siddiqui, Justice Salahuddin Panhwar, Justice Shakeel Ahmad, Justice Aamer Farooq, and Justice Ishtiaq Ibrahim. However, the Chief Justice of the Lahore High Court was not included in the list, raising further concerns among the legal community.

PTI Senator Hamid Khan termed these appointments “unconstitutional” and “illegitimate.” Talking to Geo News, he said that his party would never accept the appointments. He made this statement after earlier protests, including a strike by lawyers in Islamabad on February 3 against the transfer of three high court judges to the Islamabad High Court (IHC), whereas the Karachi Bar Association supported the strike and stayed out of court.

Day-to-Day Impact of Islamabad Demonstrations

The protest demonstrations profoundly disrupted the city’s transportation system of Islamabad. Blocking roads to the Red Zone and suspending the metro bus resulted in severe traffic jam across the city, which further escalated tensions around the protest rallies.

Legal fraternity opposition to appointments and ongoing demonstrations indicate a rise in the increasing dissatisfaction within Pakistan’s legal community towards decisions taken by the JCP recently.

Imran Khan Inspires Nationwide Mobilization

Despite being in prison, Imran Khan continues to inspire his supporters worldwide. PTI posted, “The captain, the leader, the philanthropist, the educationist, the mentor, the idol, and the legend… His name is Imran Khan Niazi and he has won.” The party praised his ability to unite people and challenge the regime, even while confined.

March Toward Islamabad Faces Resistance

In Pakistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur led a convoy toward Islamabad. PTI wrote, “As early as the morning, Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur started advancing with the convoy, destination only Islamabad.” As the convoy made its way from Swabi to Islamabad, police fired tear gas near key checkpoints like Attock Bridge and Chach Interchange to block the protesters.

Despite the resistance, Gandapur remained determined. He said, “We must advance and not turn back until Imran Khan is released.” He urged supporters to prepare for more resistance as they continued their march.

Frustration Over Delays

The convoy faced delays, leading to frustration among PTI supporters. Bushra Bibi, Imran Khan’s wife, urged them to move faster. She said, “Time is being wasted. Stay in your vehicles so we can reach there quickly. We are here to bring Khan back. Let’s move without delay.”

Government Prepares for the Protest

The Pakistani government took measures to prevent the PTI protest. The Interior Ministry warned that no protests would be allowed in Islamabad, threatening legal action against violators. Despite these threats, PTI leaders remained firm in their plans.

Several PTI leaders, including Aamir Dogar and Zain Qureshi, were arrested by Punjab Police. PTI vowed to continue their journey to Islamabad, with Gandapur declaring, “We will bring our private machinery to remove obstacles and reach Islamabad.”

Heavy Security in Islamabad

The government fortified Islamabad in anticipation of the protest. Roads were sealed, and barriers were placed around the city. Security forces, including Rangers and the Frontier Constabulary, were deployed to sensitive areas like the Red Zone. Critical locations, such as D-Chowk and Islamabad Airport, were shut down.

These measures disrupted daily life, with public transit halted and major roads blocked. Hospitals were put on high alert due to potential unrest, and pre-emptive arrests were made across Punjab. PTI leaders, including former MNA Nafisa Khattak, were detained.

Communication Restrictions Add to Public Frustration

The government also considered suspending internet and mobile services in high-risk areas. This measure aimed to prevent information from fueling unrest. It has caused frustration among the public as roadblocks and security measures severely impacted transportation.

As tensions rise, PTI continues to push for the release of Imran Khan, while the government strengthens its efforts to stop the protest.

The meeting highlighted the shared commitment of India and Mongolia to deepen cooperation in various fields, including politics, culture, and economics. The historical bond between the two countries, which dates back over 2,000 years, was acknowledged during the discussions.

Jaishankar’s Arrival in Islamabad for the SCO Summit

Earlier on Tuesday, Jaishankar arrived in Islamabad to participate in the 23rd Meeting of the Council of Heads of Government (CHG) of the SCO. He was warmly received at Nur Khan Airbase by Ilyas Mehmood Nizami, Director General (South Asia) of Pakistan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The SCO CHG, the second highest decision-making forum within the organisation, is chaired this year by Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. Pakistan assumed the rotating chairmanship of the SCO CHG for 2023-24 at the previous meeting held in Bishkek in October 2023. This meeting is expected to focus on strengthening trade and economic cooperation among member countries.

India’s Role in the SCO and Commitment to Multilateral Diplomacy

India’s participation in the SCO Summit underscores its commitment to regional cooperation and multilateral diplomacy. Speaking about his visit, Jaishankar made it clear that India’s focus was on its role within the SCO and that the visit was not intended to address bilateral relations with Pakistan. This reflects India’s ongoing efforts to promote stability and prosperity through dialogue within the multilateral framework of the SCO.

Established in 2001, the SCO is a key platform for political, economic, and security cooperation in the region. Member states include Pakistan, China, India, Russia, Iran, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, and Belarus, with 16 countries holding observer or dialogue partner status.

Historical Ties Between India and Mongolia

India and Mongolia share a strong historical and cultural connection, with interactions spanning over 2,000 years. Formal diplomatic relations were established on December 24, 1955, and India became the first country outside the Socialist bloc to recognise Mongolia’s sovereignty. Since then, both nations have continued to build on their relationship, deepening their ties across various sectors.

The partnership between India and Mongolia was elevated to a strategic level during Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Mongolia in 2015. This visit paved the way for enhanced collaboration in political, economic, and cultural spheres.

The Indian Community in Mongolia

The Indian community in Mongolia is relatively small, with around 200 people, many of whom are involved in organised sectors or self-employed, such as running Indian restaurants. Despite its size, this community plays a key role in maintaining the cultural and economic connection between the two nations.

Jaishankar’s meeting with the Mongolian Prime Minister at the SCO Summit highlights the ongoing efforts to strengthen the India-Mongolia partnership, while also reflecting India’s active participation in regional diplomacy through multilateral platforms like the SCO.

</excerpt>

On August 14, Pakistan’s 78th Independence Day, a 28-year-old Belgian woman was discovered on the streets of Islamabad with her hands bound behind her back. According to local media reports, the woman alleged that she had been raped over a period of five days, leading to the arrest of a suspect.

Samaa TV reported that the Belgian Woman was found abandoned by nearby residents who alerted the police. Authorities quickly responded, rescuing her and taking her to a hospital for a medical examination to assess her injuries.

The woman told the police that she had been assaulted by multiple men. Preliminary investigations appear to support her claims. A suspect named Tameezuddin has been arrested based on her statement. Pakistan Today revealed that Tameezuddin was taken into custody at his residence by Aabpara police officers. During questioning, Tameezuddin claimed that the woman was mentally unstable and lacked personal identification and travel documents.

Authorities are conducting further searches at Tameezuddin’s home to recover any items belonging to the Belgian Woman. Additionally, Tameezuddin is undergoing a medical examination at the same hospital where the victim is being treated.

Dawn reported that police were alerted to a woman abandoned on the roadside in Sector G-6/1-3. When they arrived, they found a young woman in her mid-20s who identified herself as a Belgian citizen. She stated that she had been living in Islamabad for about six months and accused a man she had been living with of repeatedly raping her.

The Belgian embassy in Islamabad had no record of the woman traveling to Pakistan. The case has been referred to the Netherlands mission due to her indicated residence near the border between the two countries. Assistance has also been sought from the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA), but they also lack records of the woman’s travel.

The investigation is ongoing as authorities work to verify the details of this Rape case and piece together the events leading up to the woman’s discovery.

</excerpt>

Islamabad police have requested the attorney general to challenge a recent Islamabad High Court (IHC) verdict that significantly restricts the ability of intelligence and law enforcement agencies to conduct investigations and monitor terrorist activities, as reported by Dawn.

Justice Babar Sattar’s ruling prohibits cellular providers from sharing citizens’ data with these agencies, leading to a halt in sharing Call Detail Records (CDRs) with law enforcement bodies.

This ruling, prompted by requests from Bushra Bibi, the wife of former Prime Minister Imran Khan, and Najam Saqib, the son of former Chief Justice of Pakistan Saqib Nisar, has caused disruptions in various investigations, including high-profile cases, according to Dawn.

The reliance of law enforcement on CDRs for tracking criminals, terrorists, and missing persons has been severely affected by the court’s decision. Geo-fencing, crucial for crime prevention and swift information transmission in cases like abductions, is now impossible due to the lack of cooperation from cellular operators, Dawn reported.

Justice Sattar highlighted the lack of authorization by the federal government under relevant acts for intercepting calls, messages, and surveilling citizens. He emphasized that unauthorized surveillance is punishable under various laws and violates citizens’ fundamental rights guaranteed by the Constitution.

The case is set for its next hearing on June 25.

The PTI office plot, allocated to an individual named Sartaj Ali, was under scrutiny.

PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan criticized the CDA’s actions, stating that they lacked a permit for the operation and had not issued any notices in the past two years. He emphasized that the government had violated the sanctity of a political party’s office, comparing it to a respected institution like parliament.

In response, PTI Islamabad condemned the government’s actions, accusing them of invading the country’s largest political party’s premises during the night. They reiterated their commitment to not bowing down to intimidation or lawlessness and expressed determination to uphold their agenda.

The PTI Chairman also asserted that there were no illegal constructions on their premises.

</excerpt>

A recent study from a think tank in Islamabad has pointed out that old and inefficient power plants are making Pakistan’s circular debt problem worse, according to a report in Dawn. Engineer Arshad Abbasi from the Centre for Research and Security Studies (CRSS) put together this report, highlighting the challenges facing Pakistan’s power sector. The report blames much of this on officials who have neglected the issue.

It’s called ‘Circular Debt Reduction Is Possible In a Single Click to Save Pakistan from Financial Catastrophe and Destabilisation,’ and it talks about how Pakistan’s energy sector is caught in a cycle of debt because of inefficient power plants that aren’t being used properly or retired when they should be.

The report talks about how Pakistan is paying a lot for these inefficient plants, like the Hubco Coal, Sahiwal Coal (HSR), and Port Qasim Coal power plants, even though they haven’t been working much in the last two years. This adds to Pakistan’s financial problems. The report also mentions governance problems in places like K-Electric and bad practices in both public and private power sectors. It asks if these practices are cheating Pakistan and its people.

The study stresses the need for big changes to fix these financial problems and make sure things are stable in the long term. It also mentions how Pakistan used to rely more on hydropower but now depends more on expensive imported fuels because big hydroelectric projects like the Kalabagh Dam haven’t been built due to political disagreements. The report says that these disagreements show the importance of making decisions together to protect Pakistan’s energy and economy.

</excerpt>

In a veiled critique directed at Pakistan, India addressed the United Nations General Assembly, highlighting Islamabad’s “most dubious track record” across various spheres, while condemning the “destructive and pernicious” remarks made by Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations. These remarks followed Pakistan’s Permanent Representative, Munir Akram, making comments against India, including mentions of Kashmir, the BJP, RSS, and Indian Muslims.

During her speech at the UN General Assembly session on the agenda item ‘Culture of Peace’, Ruchira Kamboj underscored that India’s rich history, diverse traditions, and profound philosophical tenets deeply embed the culture of peace within the nation. She underscored the doctrine of Ahimsa as the “bedrock of India’s commitment to peace.”

Kamboj asserted, “As we strive to nurture a culture of peace amidst challenging times, our focus remains unwavering on constructive dialogue. Therefore, we choose to disregard remarks from a specific delegation that not only lack decorum but also detract from our collective efforts due to their destructive and pernicious nature.” She further added, “We urge that delegation to adhere to the essential principles of respect and diplomacy, qualities that should guide our discussions, although it may seem too much to ask of a country that harbors a most dubious track record on all fronts.”

Expressing concern over escalating attacks on various religious sites globally, Kamboj stressed the necessity of a “swift and united response” from the international community. She emphasized, “In today’s world, geopolitical tensions and disparities in development pose significant challenges. The rise in intolerance, discrimination, and violence based on religion or belief demands urgent attention. We are particularly alarmed by the increasing attacks on sacred sites, including churches, monasteries, gurudwaras, mosques, temples, and synagogues.”

Moreover, Kamboj reiterated India’s stance that terrorism fundamentally contradicts the culture of peace and the core teachings of all religions, advocating for compassion, understanding, and coexistence. She emphasized the imperative for member states to collaborate in fostering a genuine culture of peace.

Highlighting the paramount significance of peace in the current global landscape, Kamboj emphasized diplomacy and communication over confrontation or warfare. She emphasized, “Peace prioritizes dialogue over discord, urging nations to embrace diplomacy and communication to navigate ongoing conflicts worldwide.”

Underlining India’s cultural heritage as a testament to tolerance and coexistence, Kamboj pointed out festivals like Diwali, Eid, Christmas, and Nowruz that transcend religious boundaries. She highlighted India’s historical role as a refuge for persecuted faiths, illustrating its commitment to diversity.

Kamboj also commended Bangladesh for presenting a resolution on the follow-up to the Declaration and Program of Action, which India proudly co-sponsors. She reiterated India’s dedication to upholding ideals of humanity, democracy, and nonviolence, concluding her speech with a quote from the sacred Bhagavad Gita: “‘When a person responds to the joys and sorrows of others as if they were his own, he attains the highest state of spiritual union’.”

</excerpt>

An accountability court in Islamabad has prohibited former Prime Minister Imran Khan and his wife, Bushra Bibi, from making statements against state institutions and officials, as per The Express Tribune.

Judge Basir Javed Rana instructed the PTI founder and his spouse to refrain from speaking against state institutions while in the courtroom, during the hearing of a petition requesting a fair trial. The court also directed the media to abstain from publishing politically provocative statements targeting state institutions and their officials.

As per The Express Tribune, the order stated that the PTI chief had made provocative political statements against senior officials of state institutions, including the army, the judiciary, and the army chief.

“Such statements disrupt judicial decorum and also obstruct judicial functions such as the dispensation of justice,” the order added.

The court order also directed the prosecution, the accused, and their defense counsels to abstain from making political or inflammatory statements that could disturb the decorum of the court.

Khan, who served as PM from 2018-2022, continues to be incarcerated in several cases, including a 14-year jail term for him and his wife for the unlawful sale of state gifts.

He was initially imprisoned following a three-year sentence in August 2023 by the Election Commission for failing to declare assets acquired from selling gifts valued at over PKR 140 million rupees (USD 501,000) while in possession of the state and received during his tenure as prime minister.

This information was disclosed at a hearing for a £190 million corruption case at the Adiala jail in Rawalpindi, where Imran Khan, a politician who was formerly a cricket player, is being tried on several convictions in Pakistan.

Imran Khan raised concerns about additional walls being erected in the courtroom, creating a closed environment. He mentioned that Dr. Asim Yousaf, the Chief Medical Officer of Shaukat Khanum Hospital, recommended conducting tests for Bushra Bibi at Shifa International Hospital. However, the jail authorities insisted on performing the tests at Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) Hospital.

Following Imran Khan’s remarks about the added walls, the judge instructed authorities to remove the wooden planks during the proceedings. Additionally, the court ordered a medical examination for both Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi by Dr. Yousaf.

In response to concerns raised by Bushra Bibi about her health, she had requested Islamabad High Court on April 15 to permit her medical checkup at a private hospital of her choice, suspecting possible poisoning through food provided by the jail authorities. She cited symptoms such as heartburn, throat pain, and mouth discomfort.

Currently, Bushra Bibi, aged 49, is detained at her residence in Banigala, designated as a sub-jail, following her conviction in a corruption case and an illegal marriage case involving Imran Khan.

Recently, Imran Khan accused Army chief General Asim Munir of direct responsibility for Bushra Bibi’s imprisonment.

</excerpt>

A district and session court in Islamabad issued an order for the appearance of former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan and his wife, Bushra Bibi, on April 4, Pakistan-based ARY News reported.

Details reveal that Session Court Judge Tahir Abbas Sipra presided over the bail pleas and issued production orders for Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi. PTI lawyer Khalid Yousaf Choudhary represented the case in court, where the Adiala Jail superintendent was instructed to present Imran Khan on April 4.

According to ARY News, the District and Sessions Court in Islamabad acquitted Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan in two vandalism cases filed against him. Imran Khan had been booked in two cases at Loohi Bheer and Sahala police stations during the party’s long march in Islamabad. Judicial Magistrate Ayesha Kundi acquitted him in both cases.

Meanwhile, the Islamabad High Court (IHC) has instructed the Adiala jail superintendent to organize virtual meetings between Imran Khan and his lawyers until the security concerns are addressed.

According to an ARY News report, IHC stated in its judgment that Imran Khan’s lawyer had mentioned that they were unable to meet their client due to security concerns.

Imran Khan, the founder of PTI, has been confronted with more than 100 cases since his removal from office. Presently, he is detained in Adiala Jail due to convictions in cases related to toshakhana, cypher, and an “unlawful” marriage.

According to The International News, a local court has issued a production order for Imran Khan and party leader Shah Mahmood Qureshi. The order directs the Adiala jail authorities to present them before the court before April 20.

While hearing a petition concerning the Parliament attack case, the district and sessions court issued the production order, requesting the presence of Khan and Qureshi in court proceedings.

As reported by The International News, Khan’s counsel, Naeem Panjotha, presented his arguments before Judicial Magistrate Mureed Abbas, who presided over the hearing. Panjotha informed the court that the superintendent of Adiala Jail does not comply with court orders. He urged the court to ensure that the jail officials follow the orders and present Khan before it.

He further stated that the jail authorities provided excuses, and the PTI founder was not even being presented for a hearing via video link, according to The International News. In response, the judicial magistrate acknowledged Khan’s detention in Adiala Jail and the challenges arising from the situation.

While acknowledging the option of video link attendance, the magistrate emphasized a preference for physical presence in the e-court. Imran Khan’s lawyer requested the court to instruct the authorities to bring Khan to the courtroom.

Panjotha added that while the internet functions in Adiala Jail, it mysteriously stops working only in the case of the PTI founder. “Adiala jail superintendent is afraid to bring PTI founder on video link,” the counsel said.

Previously, Panjotha had filed a petition requesting Khan’s appearance for a hearing concerning his acquittal in two vandalism cases during a long march. However, Judicial Magistrate Shaista Kundi rejected the petition citing security concerns.

On Friday, people continued to demonstrate against the wheat price hike at Yadgar Chowk, and a large rally took place at Jamia Masjid Skardu, despite the harsh cold weather conditions in Skardu.

Additionally, protests were held in Ganche Shigar and Kharmung. Anjuman Tajran Roundu also expressed their discontent by protesting against the increased wheat prices and announced the closure of Shahrah Baltistan as a means to pressure the authorities into meeting their demands.

During the meeting, Ghulam Hussain Athar, the head of the All-Party Alliance, disclosed that they had received a message offering a PKR 15 billion package to Baltistan in exchange for withdrawing from the wheat movement.

Athar emphasized that they should be given PKR 4.5 billion instead, as the talks of fifteen billion rupees were merely an attempt to deceive them. Athar further stated, “We are being presented with various offers, including attractive incentives, to abandon the wheat movement. However, we have never compromised before, and we will not compromise now. This issue affects all of us.”

In another protest organized by the Awami Action Committee Yasin Valley, demonstrators gathered outside the AC Office Yasin at Yasin Khas Sub-Divisional Headquarters to express their opposition to the increased price of subsidized wheat.

The protesters denounced the provincial government’s decision to set the wheat price at Rs 3,600, considering it a harsh measure against the impoverished population.

Furthermore, the protestors criticized the members of the Gilgit-Baltistan Assembly and the Chief Minister, claiming that they were unfit to represent the people. They also alleged that the Prime Minister and ministers were under the influence of Islamabad.

“The Gilgit-Baltistan Assembly is not a public spokesperson but a group of privileged classes,” accused the protestors. The protestors said that the protest will continue until the government withdraws the notification regarding wheat.

</excerpt>

As more than 100 Baloch students are reported missing as a result of a crackdown on their long march, Pakistan police established a “special help centre” on Sunday to assist in the release of those who have been imprisoned, according to Dawn.
The Baloch long march, which began in Turbat on December 6 in response to the alleged “extra-judicial killing” of a Baloch youth by Counter-Terrorism Department (CTD) agents, arrived in the federal capital on Wednesday last week.

SPP Abdul Haq Umrani has been designated as the focal point for these issues, and contact details for the public to lodge complaints have been disseminated, according to a statement issued by the capital police on the “X” social media platform.
According to Dawn, which cited the public relations officer, a dedicated help desk aimed at ensuring the “safe release” of detained individuals had been established by the police.
“The help centre will remain operational round the clock to aid citizens in immediate resolution of issues and prioritise swift redressal of their concerns on grounds,” the officer said.

“The special help centre is poised to play a pivotal role in facilitating citizens’ immediate assistance and addressing their problems based on priority criteria. Concurrently, the Islamabad
Capital Police were actively engaged in the ongoing process of releasing detained individuals in compliance with the law, with SSP Abdul Haq Umrani assigned as the focal person for these matters,” he added, according to Dawn.
Separately, Pakistan Peoples’ Party (PPP) Senator Raza Rabbani decried the “high-handed and ruthless manner in which the Islamabad police has dealt with the long marchers from Balochistan.”

“The treatment meted out to women was not in accordance with Pakistani tradition and culture. There was no justification in arresting Balochi students studying in Islamabad,” Dawn quoted him as saying.
The long march against the alleged Baloch genocide and disappearances started to move towards Islamabad on Wednesday after a successful stop at Dera Ismail Khan where thousands of protesters participated in the rally to raise their voices.

The Balochistan Yakjehti committee has repeatedly called for the Baloch people to raise their voices against the atrocities committed against the Baloch people.
The committee noted that the Baloch Long March against alleged Baloch genocide, illegal forced disappearance of the people, killing of missing persons by the Counter Terrorism Department (CTD) in fake encounters and the activity of death squads across Balochistan had seen widespread support.

</excerpt>

11 May, Islamabad, Pakistan Asian Lite noted that Pakistan’s minority Hindu population does not take use of legal protections for their women, property, inheritance, and marriage because they are not aware that such protections exist.
Little has been done to inform the nation’s largest minority community, which makes up a tiny 1.8% of the 220 million people in the country, about the 69-year-old law’s existence and “negligible” use. According to Asian Lite and Dawn, the law was enacted six years ago. The bulk of Hindus reside in Pakistan’s Sindh province, which has its own law that was passed after years of contentious debate.

The Hindu Marriage Act, 2017, which is in effect in Punjab, Balochistan, and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, “reeks of our institutionalised prejudice” towards the group, claims Dawn. Simply put, no one in the community for which it has been implemented is aware of it.
According to ABC News, the law is crucial, particularly for women since every year in Pakistan, more than 1000 young girls from the minority Hindu, Christian, and Sikh faiths are abducted and forced to convert to Islam.

Hindu and Christian girls from lower Castes and low-income households make up the majority of the targets.
The Hindu community in Pakistan was referred to as “frozen out” by Dawn. It mentioned that the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan expressed concern at a recent event that marginalised groups were “ignorant about laws that protect them.”
The Hindu Marriage Act’s restrictions have been softened to accommodate various reservations. According to Asian Lite, they are still ‘opaque’ regarding who is permitted to solemnise Hindu marriages.
The publication noted that the voyage of the bill has been “paradoxical.Even though it is a thorough document that breaks with many strict customs, its implementation to date has just substituted a marriage certificate for a wedding photograph.

“The majority of women from a frozen-out community in Pakistan continue to live without official documentation, consent and inheritance, and submit to underage marriage as well as social and domestic violence,” Dawn said, Asian Lite reported.

</excerpt>

Islamabad courts to arrest Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf chairman Imran Khan, sources said the Islamabad police will visit Zaman Park in the next 24 hours to arrest the former prime minister, reported Geo News.
Notably, a sessions court in Islamabad issued non-bailable arrest warrants for Khan in a case of threatening a female judge belonging to a court in the federal capital. Khan was booked in a case for threatening judicial magistrate Zeba Chaudhry and police officers at a rally in F-9 Park on August 20, to “terrorise” police officers and the judiciary, reported Geo News.
Earlier in the day, Civil Judge Rana Mujahid Rahim released the three-page reserved verdict and issued non-bailable arrest warrants over Khan’s repeated non-appearance.
The former prime minister, instead of attending the hearing, filed a plea for an exemption from physically appearing before the judge, requesting permission for joining the court proceedings virtually via video link, reported Geo News.
Desperate to put him behind bars, a police party from Islamabad earlier in the day flew by helicopter to Lahore to arrest the PTI chairman — who was ousted as the prime minister last year in April.
The sources told Geo News that several decisions were taken during a meeting between Islamabad and Lahore’s police officials — as the law enforcers came to the city for the second time to arrest Khan.
The meeting’s participants decided that the Islamabad police would be completely supported and it will be ensured that the capital’s cops reach Khan’s Zaman Park residence with no hindrances, sources said.
Two courts have issued Khan’s non-bailable arrest warrants in separate cases, however, he has not appeared before them repeatedly — and instead, held a rally in Lahore, where he also announced to hold a “historic” rally this Sunday.
In connection with the Toshakhana case, the capital police had arrived on March 5 as well in Lahore, but they were told that Khan was not at his Zaman Park residence, resulting in them leaving empty-handed, reported Geo News.
A district and sessions court earlier in the day also restored the former prime minister’s non-bailable arrest warrant in the Toshakhana case.
The Islamabad court had earlier reserved its verdict on a petition filed by the former prime minister seeking an exemption from the hearing of the case.
