</excerpt>

Recent data highlights a concerning trend in India’s aviation sector, where flight delays are becoming increasingly prevalent, impacting a growing number of passengers. Notably, even major players like IndiGo and Air India are experiencing significant declines in punctuality, once considered their hallmark. The recent shift in operations at Delhi Airport’s Terminal 1 due to a roof collapse has exacerbated the issue, forcing flights to be redistributed across other terminals.

IndiGo and Air India’s Performance Decline

IndiGo, historically known for its punctuality, recorded an On-Time Performance (OTP) of 72.8% in May 2024, down from 90.3% just a year prior. Similarly, Air India’s OTP dropped to 68.4%, marking a departure from its earlier promising performance post-privatization. These figures underscore a substantial increase in flight delays, with a notable impact on passenger schedules and travel plans.

Impact on Passenger Volume

In May 2024 alone, IndiGo experienced over 30,000 passengers daily affected by delayed departures from major metro airports. This represents a significant rise compared to previous years, reflecting the broader trend of increased passenger disruptions due to operational delays.

Operational Challenges and Future Outlook

Factors contributing to these delays include heightened security protocols affecting connecting flights and infrastructural limitations at key airports. IndiGo’s response to these challenges has been tepid, despite its previous emphasis on punctuality in marketing campaigns. The airline’s efforts to reclaim its OTP leadership position have been overshadowed by operational constraints and high aircraft utilization rates.

Looking Ahead

As IndiGo plans for the introduction of widebody aircraft by 2027, the complexity of its operations is expected to increase further. This poses additional challenges in maintaining punctuality amidst a larger network of domestic and international flights.

while flight delays continue to disrupt passenger travel across India, airlines like IndiGo face mounting pressure to address operational inefficiencies and regain their reputation for punctuality in the competitive aviation landscape.

The airline has placed a firm order for 30 Airbus A350-900 aircraft, marking a substantial investment in modernizing and expanding its fleet. The A350-900 is known for its advanced technology, fuel efficiency, and passenger comfort features, making it a preferred choice for long-haul flights.

Speaking about the potential routes for expansion into the US and Europe, Elbers expressed confidence in the capabilities of the A350-900 aircraft. He stated, “We are analyzing the routes, but the planes have the capabilities to reach the said destinations directly.” This statement indicates IndiGo’s intention to leverage the A350-900’s long-range capabilities to explore new international routes.

The decision to introduce the A350-900 into its fleet aligns with IndiGo’s strategy to tap into long-haul markets and cater to increasing demand for international travel. With a focus on efficiency and passenger experience, the A350-900 is poised to enhance IndiGo’s competitiveness in the global aviation landscape.

IndiGo and Air India flights are encountering disruptions as Dubai International Airport diverts flight arrivals due to heavy rains causing flooding across the United Arab Emirates and on the tarmac of one of the world’s busiest airports.

The United Arab Emirates continues to grapple with the aftermath of a historic storm this week that paralyzed much of the country.

Operations at Dubai airport, a crucial travel hub, remain disrupted following Tuesday’s storm, which flooded the runway, leading to flight diversions, delays, and cancellations.

The airport announced Thursday morning that it had resumed receiving inbound flights at Terminal 1, utilized by foreign carriers, but flight operations continue to experience delays and disturbances.

Emirates, the largest carrier at the airport, announced it would resume passenger check-ins in Dubai at 9 a.m. (0500 GMT) on Thursday, delaying the restart by nine hours from the initially planned midnight.

Stranded passengers faced challenges in accessing food, with nearby roads blocked by floodwaters and limited access due to overcrowding for those with confirmed bookings.

The storm, originating in neighboring Oman on Sunday, struck the UAE on Tuesday, inundating roads and causing extensive traffic jams as rainwater flooded homes. One fatality was reported in the UAE, with 20 casualties in Oman.

Residents found themselves trapped in traffic, offices, and residences as the UAE experienced its heaviest rainfall in the 75 years of recorded history, according to authorities. Government employees and students were advised to stay home until waterlogged roads were cleared.

Climate experts attribute such extreme weather events to rising temperatures resulting from human-induced climate change, which intensifies storms by increasing moisture in the atmosphere.

Researchers anticipate that climate change will lead to higher temperatures, elevated humidity, and increased risk of flooding in the Gulf region, exacerbated by insufficient drainage infrastructure in countries like the UAE.

Despite speculation, a UAE government agency overseeing cloud seeding denied conducting any such operations before the storm.

In response to the disaster, UAE President Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan instructed authorities to assess the damage and provide assistance to affected families, as reported by the state news agency.

Dubai International Airport acknowledged significant disruptions due to adverse weather conditions and pledged efforts to restore normal operations promptly.

</excerpt>

IndiGo, the largest airline in India, exceeded Southwest Airlines based in the US in terms of market capitalization on Wednesday, becoming the world’s third most valuable airline according to Bloomberg data.

IndiGo’s stock price surged by 4.73 percent to reach Rs 3,806 on Wednesday, raising its market capitalization to $17.605 billion, surpassing Southwest’s market capitalization of $17.333 billion.

According to Bloomberg data, Delta Airlines ($30.442 billion) and Ryanair ($26.941 billion) hold the top two spots in terms of market capitalization.

IndiGo is the sole Indian carrier among the world’s top 10 airlines. Currently, IndiGo operates 14,014 flights per week, marking an 11.2 percent increase compared to the previous week of April, based on Cirium’s data.

The world’s two largest aircraft orders in the past year were made by IndiGo and Air India. In June 2023, IndiGo placed an order for 500 A320neo family planes with Airbus. In February 2023, the Air India Group ordered 470 planes: 250 from Airbus and 220 from Boeing.

In February, Edward Delahaye, Head of Customer Accounts for India and South Asia at Airbus, projected that India is poised to emerge as the hub of global aviation within the next 15 years. He attributed this to the country’s robust demand, capacity, and the presence of professionally-managed airlines in its aviation market.

India currently has about 800 commercial aircraft operating in its skies, with the majority from European plane-maker Airbus. “If you add domestic traffic growth, the GDP growth in the country, recapturing a lot of international traffic from other international airports, and establishing India as a connecting place in the world, I think the prospects of Indian aviation are very bright, well beyond what we are seeing today,” he mentioned.

IndiGo CEO Pieter Elbers expressed satisfaction with the company’s financial performance, stating, “With these 5 consecutive quarters of profit, we continue to recover from the losses of Covid and have now become net worth positive again.”

The airline attributed this profitable growth to the confidence exhibited by passengers who chose IndiGo for their travels. The statement expressed gratitude towards customers and the thousands of employees who consistently strive to provide excellent service. IndiGo highlighted that it served over 100 million passengers in a calendar year, achieving membership in the exclusive club of global carriers operating at such a scale. The airline also emphasized its operational reach, boasting of 2,000-plus daily flights to 118 destinations.

“Each achievement is a testament to our focused strategy, loyalty of our customers and dedication of 6E employees,” the statement concluded, underlining the significance of these milestones for the company.

Earlier in the day, IndiGo issued an advisory, stating that flight operations in Delhi, Srinagar, and Chandigarh were likely to be impacted due to inclement weather. The airline urged passengers to check their flight status before heading to the airport.

IndiGo had recently incurred a fine of ₹1.2 crore for five violations after passengers were observed eating on the tarmac while waiting for their flight to take off. The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) termed this act a “violation of apron discipline” and noted, “It came to the notice of the DGCA through social media that on January 15, passengers of two IndiGo flights were on the apron for a considerable period at the CSMI Airport, Mumbai (MIAL). This violates Para 5 of DGCA Air Safety circular 04 of 2007 which directs all agencies working at the airport not to permit walking on an active apron. The presence of passengers on the apron for a considerable period violates apron discipline as it jeopardised the safety of the passengers and the aircraft.” IndiGo was instructed to pay the penalty, the highest imposed on airlines in recent times, within 30 days.

The DGCA issued a Rs 30 lakh fine to Mumbai Airport for the infraction after reviewing the video.

The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), the country’s aviation regulator, took note of the video and ordered Mumbai Airport to pay Rs 30 lakh for the violation associated with the incident. IndiGo, on the other hand, has been directed to pay the Rs1.2-crore fine within 30 days, making it one of the most substantial penalties imposed on an airline in recent times.

The DGCA referred to the incident as a “violation of apron discipline” and highlighted the compromise on passenger and aircraft safety. The regulator pointed out that passengers on two IndiGo flights were on the apron for a considerable period at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport in Mumbai on January 15, which contradicts safety protocols outlined in Air Safety Circular 04 of 2007.

The DGCA stated, “The presence of passengers on the apron for a considerable period violates apron discipline as it jeopardizes the safety of the passengers and the aircraft.” Additionally, the response received from Mumbai International Airport Limited (MIAL) on January 17 was deemed unsatisfactory, indicating a failure to adhere to safety requirements.

In response to the same incident, Mumbai Airport has been fined Rs 30 lakh for non-compliance with safety regulations. The DGCA emphasized the importance of maintaining safety standards, particularly those related to the movement of passengers on an active apron.

Moreover, the regulator imposed fines on Air India and SpiceJet for poor preparedness, leading to fog-related delays. Both airlines received fines of Rs 30 lakh each for violation and non-compliance of the Aircraft Rules, 1937. The DGCA highlighted that the airlines did not roster Category II/III and Low Visibility Takeoff (LVTO)-qualified pilots for some flights, leading to a breach of relevant regulations.

The winter fog delays this year took an unprecedented turn, with social media visuals showing passengers sitting on the tarmac, eating meals next to aircraft. The video that triggered the penalties showed weary passengers eating on the tarmac after their Goa-Delhi flight was diverted to Mumbai due to low visibility in Delhi.

IndiGo, in response, issued a statement acknowledging the incident and expressing apologies to customers. The airline assured us that it is investigating the matter and will take the necessary steps to prevent such instances in the future. The fines imposed on IndiGo, Air India, and SpiceJet underline the regulators’ commitment to upholding safety and operational standards within the aviation industry.

According to the statement, “IndiGo flight 6E 5319 from Mumbai to Guwahati was diverted to Dhaka, Bangladesh, due to bad weather in Guwahati.”

In response to the situation, the airline company has taken steps to minimize passenger inconvenience. “Due to operational reasons, an alternate set of crew is being arranged to operate the flight from Dhaka to Guwahati. The passengers were kept informed of updates and were served refreshments on board. We sincerely regret the inconvenience caused,” the statement added.

The delay has affected some passengers associated with the Congress party, as they were reportedly en route to Guwahati for the Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra scheduled to begin from Imphal on January 14.
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath received the first boarding pass for the newly launched tri-weekly flights connecting Ahmedabad and Ayodhya through IndiGo Airlines. Aiming to bolster air connectivity in the region, Adityanath expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for granting Uttar Pradesh its fourth international airport, inaugurated on December 30.

Union Civil Aviation Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia, Union Minister VK Singh, and other senior officials marked the inauguration of the first tri-weekly flights on Thursday, linking the two cities. The Ayodhya airport will play a crucial role during the ‘Pran Pratishtha’ ceremony of the Ram Temple, scheduled for January 22, with approximately 100 chartered planes expected to land.

Adityanath emphasized the significance of the Ayodhya airport, inaugurated in December 2023, and praised PM Modi for providing enhanced connectivity to Uttar Pradesh. The Chief Minister highlighted the boost to tourism and business activities facilitated by improved air services.

The new air service directly connects Ayodhya to Ahmedabad, making it the second destination after Delhi, and Mumbai will become the third connected location starting from January 15. Another flight to Delhi is scheduled to commence on January 16, 2024. Adityanath underscored the positive impact of these air services on tourism and business activities.

Discussing the improvement in air services across the state, Adityanath stated that the number of air passengers in Uttar Pradesh increased from 59.97 lakh in 2016-17 to 96.02 lakh in the financial year 2022-23. Over the last three years, there has been a 29.46% increase in the number of air passengers in the state. He emphasized PM Modi’s vision of making air travel accessible to all citizens and providing better connectivity by road, rail, and air.

Adityanath acknowledged the state government’s contribution in providing land for the Ayodhya International Airport, covering 821 acres, while the Union Civil Aviation Ministry efficiently constructed the world-class airport. Referring to IndiGo Airlines’ presence in Uttar Pradesh, he highlighted flight facilities from eight cities in the state.

Union Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia expressed anticipation for the ‘Pran Pratishta’ of Shri Ram Lalla in Ayodhya on January 22, emphasizing its significance not only in India but also in foreign countries. Scindia commended the timely completion of various development projects, including the Ayodhya Airport, attributing it to Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath’s cooperation. The minister noted the exponential increase in air movements in Uttar Pradesh, which rose from 700 aircraft per week in 2014 to 1654 air movements per week. Additionally, he announced the imminent commencement of air services in Aligarh, Azamgarh, Chitrakoot, and Shravasti.

Delhi-NCR experienced a hazy morning on Friday as the cold wave continued to hold its grip on Northern India, resulting in dense fog. Despite a slight improvement in fog conditions at the Indira Gandhi International Airport, the lowest visibility was recorded at 150 meters, with the Runway Visual Range (RVR) ranging from 400 to 800 meters, according to the India Meteorological Department.

The thick fog led to delays in several flights at the Delhi Airport, affecting both arrivals and departures. Additionally, Delhi-bound trains faced delays due to low visibility. The Meteorological Department’s forecast warned of the possibility of visibility reducing to 50 meters in very dense fog and improving to 400 meters in moderate fog at the IGI airport.

Passengers voiced their grievances over the inconvenience caused by the delays. A traveller, Mohd Shahrukh, expressed frustration as his flight was delayed by nearly three hours, impacting attendance at an important event. He stated, “A lot of people are facing difficulties due to the delay of flights.”

The impact of dense fog extended to trains as well. Subhash, another passenger, highlighted delays affecting eight trains that were supposed to reach the previous night and uncertainty about their arrival times.

The low visibility on roads due to dense fog also posed challenges for morning commuters. The India Meteorological Department has issued predictions of dense to very dense fog conditions across North Indian states for the next two days, cautioning travellers and urging caution on the roads.
