Entrepreneur Kunal Jain called it “heartbreaking” and urged embassy intervention. He claimed several such cases occur daily due to visa-related misunderstandings at immigration checkpoints.
</excerpt>

The disturbing incident of an Indian student at Newark Airport in America has outraged people after a video appeared online. Posted by Indian-American businessman Kunal Jain, the video captures the student being handcuffed and pinned down by officers and deported. Jain said the boy was clearly upset and told he was treated like a “criminal.”

Demanding action, Jain called upon the Indian Embassy in the US to probe into the matter and help the student. On X, Jain posted, “I saw a young Indian student deported from Newark Airport last night— handcuffed, sobbing, treated as a criminal.” He further said, “He came in pursuit of dreams, not harming anyone. As an NRI, I felt helpless and sorrowful. This is a human tragedy.”

I witnessed a young Indian student being deported from Newark Airport last night— handcuffed, crying, treated like a criminal. He came chasing dreams, not causing harm. As an NRI, I felt helpless and heartbroken. This is a human tragedy. @IndianEmbassyUS #immigrationraids pic.twitter.com/0cINhd0xU1

— Kunal Jain (@SONOFINDIA) June 8, 2025

The incident is said to have taken place at Newark Airport, New Jersey. In the pictures shared by Jain, the officers are seen holding down the student. One of the officers can be recognized as being part of the “Port Authority Police,” an agency which is tasked with regulating transit security in New York and New Jersey. The Port Authority Police Department (PAPD) is the largest transit-oriented law enforcement agency within the US and protects key locations like airports, tunnels, and the World Trade Center.

In the subsequent updates, Jain stated that the student seemed to be speaking Haryanvi, a north Indian dialect.

He also mentioned that deportation cases like these are becoming increasingly frequent. In his view, Indian students are being turned back at the US border and deported for allegedly not explaining their visit properly during immigration procedures.

These kids obtain their visas and board a flight in the morning. For some unknown reason, they cannot clarify the purpose of their visit to the immigration officials and get deported on the evening flight bound like criminals. 3-4 such incidents are occurring daily. There have been more such incidents in the past few days,” Jain added.

The clip has since led to controversy regarding the handling of foreign students and the call for diplomatic action over such situations.

Protests and Allegations of Terrorism

A video of Indian student Adarsh Mishra speaking out against the debate has gone viral on social media. In the video, Mishra criticizes the inclusion of JKLF members in the discussion, calling the organization responsible for the deaths of Kashmiri Pandits. He pointed out the group’s role in past violent acts, including killings of Hindus and government officials in Birmingham, UK. Mishra also publicly challenged the credibility of the Oxford Union president, accusing him of having ties to the Pakistani intelligence agency, ISI.

“It [JKLF] has massacred many Kashmiri Pandits, and it has killed Hindu government officials in Birmingham,” Mishra stated during the protest. “I do not trust this house. I have launched a no-confidence motion against the president because I believe many members of this house have no faith in him.”

Viral Video and Public Outcry

Mishra’s passionate speech has been widely shared online, with many praising his bravery for exposing the JKLF as a terrorist organization. Social media users have lauded the Indian students’ protest, with some calling it a “great show of courage.” Others have joined the call for a no-confidence motion against the Oxford Union president.

The Debate and Controversial Speakers

The Oxford Union’s debate featured two distinct sides. The panel supporting the motion for an independent Kashmir included Muzzamil Ayyub Thakur, a Kashmiri activist, and Professor Zafar Khan, chairman of the JKLF Diplomatic Bureau. Both are vocal critics of Indian control over Kashmir and advocate for its independence.

On the opposing side, Prem Shankar Jha, a former media advisor to a former Indian prime minister, and Siddhant Nagrath, an expert on the region, argued against the motion, presenting the case for the continuation of Indian sovereignty over Kashmir.

The Oxford Union described the debate topic as one of geopolitical complexity, highlighting Kashmir’s troubled history since British colonial rule ended in 1947. It mentioned that the ongoing unrest and calls for Kashmiri self-determination remain central to the region’s issues.

Concerns Raised by British Hindu Organization

The controversy surrounding the debate did not go unnoticed in the UK. INSIGHT UK, a British Hindu organization, expressed its concern about the Oxford Union’s decision to host the debate. They submitted a formal letter to the Union, questioning the invitation of speakers with alleged terrorist links and warning about the potential damage to the integrity of the discussion.

In a statement on X (formerly Twitter), INSIGHT UK emphasized the troubling nature of the invitation: “We have submitted a formal letter to the Oxford Union, expressing serious reservations regarding their decision to host this debate. The invitation of speakers allegedly linked to terrorism is especially troubling and casts doubts on the integrity of the discussion.”

The Future of the Debate

As the debate continues to spark debate both within and outside the Oxford Union, questions are being raised about the Union’s role in fostering free speech and academic discourse. The protest by Indian students and the viral video by Adarsh Mishra have brought the issue to the forefront, with calls for more transparency and accountability regarding who is invited to speak at such prominent forums.

He spent approximately $238 to transform the pen into a functional device, using a small fan and a four-volt vibration motor to generate sufficient suction for collecting dust particles.

Nadamuni, who previously held the record in 2020 with a 0.69-inch vacuum cleaner, had his title briefly surpassed by a slightly larger model. This time, he devised a new design and prepared over 50 schematic diagrams to meet the necessary standards.

Nadamuni’s latest creation has regained the record, affirming his innovative prowess in miniature engineering. “All the students in our college were amazed at this tiny vacuum cleaner, and my faculty told me that it’s the most beautiful creation they’ve ever seen,” Nadamuni told Guinness World Records.

</excerpt>

A 23-year-old Indian student, Nitheesha Kandula, has been reported missing in the US state of California since last week, prompting police to appeal to the public for assistance in locating her. Kandula, a student at California State University, San Bernardino (CSUSB), was last seen on May 28 in Los Angeles, according to authorities.

John Guttierez, Chief of Police at CSUSB, announced Kandula’s disappearance in a post on Sunday, urging anyone with information to come forward. The police have issued a “#MissingPersonAlert,” asking individuals who may have seen Kandula to contact them at (909) 537-5165.

Describing Nitheesha Kandula as approximately 5 feet 6 inches tall, weighing around 160 pounds, with black hair and black eyes, the police provided details about the vehicle she may have been driving—a 2021 Toyota Corolla with a California license plate, although the color of the car remains unknown.

Authorities stressed the importance of the public’s help in locating Kandula and urged those with any information to reach out to the CSUSB Police Department at (909) 538-7777 or the LAPD’s Southwest Division at (213) 485-2582.

This case adds to a string of incidents involving missing Indian students in the United States, raising concerns within the community about their safety and well-being. Just last month, 26-year-old Rupesh Chandra Chintakind was reported missing in Chicago, highlighting the ongoing challenges faced by students studying abroad.

The alleged assault left him in a medically induced coma and after three and a half months, he has regained consciousness.

Last November, Dev went out with friends in Hobart after securing a part-time job. Unfortunately, the evening in Salamanca concluded with him being taken to the hospital due to the assault. Instead of starting his new job the following day, he went into a coma. He currently faces a significant brain injury that has affected his left eye’s vision and rendered him unable to walk. “It was my dream to come to Tasmania, to Australia,” he said. He had given up a government job in India to live his dream with ambition and excitement. Describing his situation as “very bleak and grim,” he mentioned needing assistance from nurses even for basic movements on the bed. Upon regaining consciousness, he noticed a profound change in himself. “My body has a mind of its own. It doesn’t want to move according to my wish like I was before,” Dev told the media. However, the 32-year-old’s hopes became a nightmare with lifelong consequences. He said, “I had a dream to make something for myself.”

Dev is grateful for the lifesaving treatment he received at the Royal Hobart Hospital and the ongoing care at the city’s repatriation center, where he is currently being taken care of. “This support is going to cost hundreds of thousands of dollars, which not us, not his parents, not the community can afford right now. And that is why our ask is for the government to help us so that we can make arrangements for Dev when gets out of here,” said his friend Rishabh Kaushik. Being an oversee student, Dev cannot access the National Disability Insurance Scheme or Centrelink.

</excerpt>

In Australia, a 22-year-old MTech student was fatally stabbed during a dispute among Indian students, as reported by the victim’s uncle on Monday. The incident occurred on Saturday at approximately 9 pm local time in Melbourne, resulting in another student sustaining injuries.

Navjeet Sandhu, the victim, was stabbed with a knife by another student while attempting to mediate a disagreement between several Indian students regarding rent, according to his uncle, Yashvir. Yashvir, who is due to retire from the Army in July, explained that Navjeet’s friend, also an Indian student, had requested Navjeet’s assistance in retrieving belongings from his residence.

While the friend was indoors, Navjeet heard commotion and witnessed a physical altercation. He intervened to defuse the situation, urging them to cease fighting, but tragically, he was fatally stabbed in the chest during the altercation. Both Navjeet and the accused are from Karnal.

Yashvir shared that the family received news of the incident early Sunday morning. Navjeet’s friend, who was with him at the time, also sustained injuries during the altercation. Describing Navjeet as a brilliant student eagerly anticipating joining his family for vacation in July, Yashvir expressed the family’s profound shock over the tragedy.

Navjeet had moved to Australia on a study visa approximately a year and a half ago, with his father, a farmer, having sold one and a half acres of their land to finance his education. Yashvir appealed to the Government of India for assistance in expediting the repatriation of Navjeet’s remains.

</excerpt>

According to the New York Post, an investigation has been initiated into Seattle police union executives after an officer was videotaped on his body camera smiling and joking about an Indian-origin lady who was killed by a police patrol car in January of this year.

Officer Daniel Auderer can be heard addressing the inquiry into the tragedy involving graduate student Jaahnavi Kandula, who was murdered by his colleague, Officer Kevin Dave, on January 23 in the video released on Monday. The 23-year-old was a master’s student at the Seattle campus of Northeastern University.

In the video, Seattle Police Officers’ Guild Vice President Daniel Auderer can be heard saying, “She is dead,” before bursting out laughing and referring to Ms. Kandula as a “regular person.” “Yeah, just write a check,” he added amid bouts of laughing. 11 thousand bucks.”

The clip ends with him saying: “She was 26 anyway, she had limited value”, getting her age wrong.

Following the release of the video, the Seattle Community Police Commission (CPC) issued a statement calling the exchange between Mr Auderer and his colleague “heartbreaking and shockingly insensitive.” ”The people of Seattle deserve better from a police department that is charged with fostering trust with the community and ensuring public safety,” the CPC added.

Meanwhile, the Seattle Police Department, which released the footage “in the interest of transparency,” stated that it would not comment on the event until the Police Accountability Office completed its investigation.

Ms. Kandula, a native of Andhra Pradesh’s Kurnool region, died after being hit by a Seattle police patrol vehicle in South Lake Union.

According to the Seattle Police Department, the officer driving the marked patrol SUV was traveling northbound on Dexter Avenue North when he and the Seattle Fire Department responded to a “priority one call.” According to the statement, the female pedestrian was crossing from east to west in the crosswalk when the vehicle struck her.

Initially, Auderer stated that the cop was driving his car at 50 MPH and was not “out of control.” However, the police investigation eventually revealed that the automobile was traveling at 74 mph when it collided with Ms Kandula. The King County Medical Examiner’s Office reports that.

Jaahnavi Kandula was a Northeastern University student in South Lake Union who was on pace to graduate with a master’s degree in information systems this December.

</excerpt>

According to media sources, a 24-year-old Indian student who worked as a food delivery partner in Canada was slain after being viciously abused during a tragic carjacking.

Gurvinder Nath was delivering pizza at 2:10 a.m. on July 9 between Mississauga’s Britannia and Creditview roads when he was confronted and attempted to steal his truck, according to CTV News.

“Investigators do believe that there are multiple suspects involved and that the food order was placed as a means of luring the driver to this specific area,” Inspector Phil King of Peel Regional Police’s Homicide Bureau said, adding that investigators have obtained an audio recording of the Pizza Pizza order placed before the attack.

According to police, after Nath arrived, he was “violently assaulted” and seriously injured by a suspect who robbed him of his vehicle and fled the area. Several witnesses came to his aid and sought for assistance before Nath was transported to a trauma center and confirmed dead on July 14.

According to the CBC, Siddhartha Nath, Consul General of India in Toronto, said Nath’s death is a “heartrending loss” and expressed condolences to family members, friends, and the larger community. He stated that the consulate general called his family following his death.

“It was heartening for me to see how the community responded, came together both online and physically to support the family in this time of grief,” the Consul General said.

“Of course, nothing can make good the loss, but it will be some solace to the grieving family and it’s also a signal of the spirit of the community because it is in times like this when the spirit and the solidarity and the sense of empathy is tested.”

Since the war broke out between Ukraine and Russia, it’s the very first time that, on Thursday, Russia made a statement about Indian students who left Ukraine.

In the statement, Russia said Indian students who left Ukraine without completing their education can continue in Russia as both countries’ syllabus is the same.

Due to war between the two countries, thousands of Indian students left the country hanging their future on a cliff.

“As far as students are concerned, students keep going to Russia for studies. It is an upward trend. More and more students are applying for scholarships in Russia,” the Russian diplomat said.

Meanwhile, Avdeev also appreciated EAM S Jaishankar’s remark about Russian oil imports.

“The Indian government is a responsible govt and it has to look after the interests of Indian consumers.”

Since the beginning of this year, the exports in Russian oil have increased from 2 to 22 pc. It is a very dramatic increase and now Russia has displaced Iraq and Saudi Arabia as leading producers of oil,” Oleg Avdeev said.

Earlier on Tuesday, EAM Jaishankar talked about the relationship between India and Russia and said, “India’s relationship with Russia has worked to its advantage and New Delhi would like to keep that going.”

Notably, on 24 February, Russia launched a military operation in Ukraine, after which Moscow recognized Ukraine’s breakaway regions – Donetsk and Luhansk-as independent entities.

Canada has introduced a new policy for international students in the midst of labour shortages and a high unemployment rate. Sean Fraser, Canada’s immigration minister, unveiled a new temporary measure targeted at easing the country’s severe labour shortages as Statistics Canada reported that the country’s jobless rate dropped to 5.2% in September.

What recent initiative might be beneficial to Indian students studying in Canada?

Over 5,000 international students studying in Canada already have the opportunity to work extra hours thanks to the new policy. International students who have a work authorization for off-campus employment on their study visa are now permitted to work more than 20 hours per week off-campus, even when classes are in session. Foreign nationals who have already submitted their study permit application may also use the measure.

Is the action only temporary?

Yes, the measure is only temporary. According to the immigration minister, the new rule will be in effect from November 15, 2022, through December 31, 2023. Its purpose is to address Canada’s labour shortages.

What are the laws in effect right now?

International students who apply to study in Canada are currently permitted to work off-campus for up to 20 hours each job throughout their studies. Only during designated school breaks, such as the summer or winter holidays, is this constraint waived.
