</excerpt>

Train passengers may have to soon cough up more mon- ey as the Railway Ministry is likely to announce a fare hike, effective July 1. Accord- ing to ministry sources, dis- cussions are underway to increase train fares and an official circular from the Railway Board is expected shortly.

As per the proposed new fare structure, there will be no change in the fares of suburban trains or monthly season tickets, offering re- lief to daily commuters. Similarly, passengers trav- eling in ordinary second- class coaches for distances up to 500 kilometres will not see any fare change.

However, for journeys ex- ceeding 500 kilometres, passengers may have to pay more. In Mail and Express trains (non-AC), the fare is expected to rise by one paisa per kilometre, while passengers traveling in air- conditioned (AC) coaches may have to shell out two paise more per kilometre.

If implemented, this hike will particularly affect long- distance travellers. This would be the third instance of a fare increase during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s 11-year tenure. The last fare revision took place in January 2020, and prior to that, in 2014. With more than 25 million people trav- eling by train every day in India, the proposed fare hike is likely to have a wide- spread impact.

Here’s What Indian Railways Will Do

<excerpt>Indian Railways offers duplicate tickets if lost, charges fines for travelling without tickets, and allows on-board ticket purchases if seats are available. Refunds are granted for delays over 3 hours, and emergency help is available via helpline number 139.
</excerpt>

Indian Railways remains the backbone of India’s transport sector, famous for its extensive network that links nearly every major city and town. Apart from being a favorite with millions of people, it is also a vital contributor to the economy of India.

But most passengers are concerned about one thing when they are traveling: What if the ticket gets lost or damaged? Will they be evicted from the train? Let us examine carefully what the official policy states.

Traveling Without a Valid Ticket

In case you are caught traveling without a ticket, Indian Railways has stringent penalties:

Penalty and Fare: You’ll need to pay the normal fare for the distance covered, as well as a penalty. The penalty can either be Rs 250 minimum or twice the price of the ticket—whichever is greater.

Refusal to Pay: In case the passenger doesn’t pay the penalty, ‘the TTE may deboard you at the next station and hand you over to the Railway Police’.

Can You Buy a Ticket After Boarding

Yes, in some cases. If you travel without a ticket but you want to buy one en route, it’s permitted—but only if there’s an empty seat. Expect to pay the standard fare plus a surcharge.

Lost or Ripped Ticket? Here’s What You Can Do

Passengers with a torn or lost ticket are not considered ticketless. You can approach the TTE onboard to request a duplicate ticket.

To receive the duplicate, you need:

Produce a valid ID evidence

Pay a small fee for the re-issued ticket

If you’re traveling on an online ticket (booked through IRCTC), don’t worry. As long as you have access to your e-ticket on your phone, “you can display your e-ticket on your mobile to the TTE, and it will be honored as valid.”

Refund Policy for Delayed Trains

In case your train is delayed by over three hours, you can get a refund. You will have to submit a Ticket Deposit Receipt (TDR) to avail it.

Emergency Assistance for Passengers

If any problem, be it theft, harassment, or assault happens to you while on board, you can call the Railway Helpline number 139 or alert the TTE or Railway Police to get help at the moment.

Maha Shivratri Marks The Grand Finale Of Maha Kumbh 2025: Police On Alert!

<excerpt>The final day of Maha Kumbh Mela 2025 sees devotees flooding Triveni Sangam for Maha Shivratri’s sacred snan. Special arrangements and heightened security ensure a safe conclusion of this grand spiritual event.
</excerpt>

The world’s largest spiritual gathering is drawing to a close as the final day of the Maha Kumbh Mela 2025 begins with a surge of devotees at the Triveni Sangam in Prayagraj. On Maha Shivratri, hundreds of thousands of pilgrims rushed to take the sacred ‘snan’ in the early hours, marking the last special bath of the six-week festival.

Final ‘Snan’ and Religious Significance

Devotees gathered at the confluence of the Ganga, Yamuna, and the mythical Saraswati rivers for a final ritual bath, an act considered essential during Maha Shivratri—a festival commemorating the divine union of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. According to Hindu mythology, Lord Shiva played a pivotal role in the churning of the ocean, which led to the emergence of the Amrit Kumbh, the pitcher of nectar that gives the festival its name.

Extensive Security and Management Arrangements

To ensure the safety of millions during this climactic event, authorities declared the entire Kumbh area a ‘no vehicle zone’. The Uttar Pradesh government, under strict security measures, deployed 37,000 police personnel and 14,000 home guards across the site. Advanced surveillance technologies, including 2,750 AI-based CCTV cameras, alongside multiple Jal Police stations, control rooms, and watch towers, are in place to monitor the vast gathering.

DIG (Kumbh) Vaibhav Krishna confirmed that preparations are geared to handle a surge of devotees, which is expected to surpass Tuesday’s count of 1.33 crore visitors. Special arrangements by Indian Railways include operating over 350 additional trains from Prayagraj to accommodate the massive influx of passengers, with several railway zones on high alert following recent stampede incidents.

Celebrations Amidst Unity and Tradition

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath extended heartfelt greetings to the people on the eve of Maha Shivratri, emphasising that the festival strengthens national unity and cultural traditions. He highlighted that the Jyotirling as across India symbolise the country’s integration and urged the community to remain committed to societal welfare, inspired by the spirit of Lord Mahadev.

Looking Forward

As the Maha Kumbh Mela comes to an end with the final ‘Amrit snan’, organizers and authorities are already focusing on post-event safety and logistics. With extensive fire-fighting measures on standby and robust security in place, officials are determined to ensure that this grand spiritual event concludes safely, leaving behind a legacy of faith and unity.

The clip has sparked outrage on social media, demanding stricter food safety measures.
</excerpt>

For many Indians, long train journeys are incomplete without the comforting call of the chai waala, offering hot tea to weary travelers. While some of these vendors are linked to official railway catering services, many board trains from outside stations. However, a shocking viral video has cast a dark shadow over this beloved tradition, raising serious concerns about hygiene practices.

The Shocking Discovery

The video, shared on Instagram by a user named Ayub, captures a disturbing scene that has left millions appalled. It shows a tea vendor entering a train bathroom after his tea supply runs out. Instead of using proper facilities, he begins washing his tea utensils with the very same pipe used for personal hygiene in the toilet. Completely indifferent to the unhygienic conditions, the vendor continues cleaning amidst the unsanitary environment.

The video appears to have been filmed secretly by someone familiar with the vendor, though the tea seller’s full face is not clearly visible.

The video has rapidly gone viral, amassing over 110 million views on Instagram. It has been shared by 3.4 million users, liked by more than 565,000 people, and received over 9,000 comments.

Reactions have been intense. One user, Srinath Ravindran, commented, “This is one of the many reasons behind leaving India. I mean, you cannot trust any person selling tea outside.” Another shocked viewer wrote, “I am watching this video while drinking tea on the train.”

The facilities are fully equipped to handle health emergencies, ensuring the safety of pilgrims during the religious event.
</excerpt>

As millions of pilgrims arrive in Prayagraj to attend the Maha Kumbh Mela, Indian Railways has also increased its preparations to ensure health and safety among the devotees. With lakhs of devotees thronging the holy city for this once-in-twelve-years affair, the railway authorities have set up well-equipped medical centers at all key stations, such as Prayagraj Junction, to provide instant medical care.

Medical Support Facilities at Prayagraj Junction

As a measure to cater to the huge influx of visitors, Indian Railways has established an observation room at the entry gate toward platform number 3 of Prayagraj station. Indian Railways has strategically positioned the facility to provide instant medical support in case of health issues or accidents. The facility is well-furnished with basic medical appliances such as Electrocardiogram machines for heart problems, defibrillators for cardiac arrest, oxygen concentrators for respiratory emergencies, and glucometers for diabetic patients.

“We have everything ready here,” said a pharmacist stationed at the facility. “Our nursing staff is available around the clock, offering immediate care. In case of severe emergencies, we promptly transfer patients to nearby hospitals through ambulances.”

Prompt Medical Attention At the Mela

The medical teams of railways have already seen many pilgrims. One case was that of a woman, who felt giddy while moving to Ganga for a religious bath. Her family member, Naveen thanked the railway people for their instant response: “We were heading to the Ganga for a bath when her health deteriorated. We’re grateful for the prompt and excellent care provided by the railway staff.”

24 x 7 Medical Care in Maha Kumbh Mela

Indian Railways is gearing up as part of a massive effort to ensure 24×7 medicare during the Maha Kumbh Mela. Most of the devotees, going to the festival, converge at a particular point-the railway station. As many as 7 crore devotees have already bathed at Triveni Sangam and the number is bound to cross 50 crore by the time the festival will conclude on February 26.

The Maha Kumbh Mela is one of the grandest spiritual assemblies where devotees gather to perform a ritual bath in the sacred water confluence at Ganga-Yamuna. Indian Railways makes sure the pilgrims while enjoying this event, enjoy it safely through access to all critical care measures.

Indian Railways plays a key role in providing medical support by absorbing an overwhelming population of pilgrims visiting the sacred site. Indian Railways cancelled his license. The NRI family was refunded ₹9,000 after filing a complaint.
</excerpt>

Indian Railways cancelled the license of a porter who had charged a non-resident Indian (NRI) family ₹10,000 for wheelchair assistance and luggage service. Payel, an NRI from Gujarat who resides in London, made a complaint after discovering that wheelchair assistance is free at stations.

Payel reached Hazrat Nizamuddin station in Delhi on 21 December. There, she booked a porter for carrying her father’s luggage and wheelchair assistance. The porter asked for Rs. 10,000. After reaching Agra, Payel came to know from Anil Sharma, secretary of the Prepaid Auto Taxi Drivers’ Union, that wheelchair service was free and porters were not entitled to charge huge amounts.

Payel lodged a complaint with the Government Railway Police (GRP) at Agra Cantt station, which collaborated with Delhi authorities to investigate. The authorities identified the porter and ordered him to return Rs. 9,000 to the family. Indian Railways expressed its “zero-tolerance policy” for such incidents.

Indian Railways offers free wheelchair service, subject to availability, with a ₹500 deposit, refundable upon returning the wheelchair, according to the IRCTC website.

The introduction of these trains is a testament to Indian Railways’ commitment to modernizing travel and enhancing regional connectivity. Travelers can now look forward to a safer, more comfortable journey to one of India’s most picturesque destinations.

</excerpt>

The Indian Railways has shortened the reservation period for train tickets from 120 days to 60 days, effective from Friday, November 1. According to Southern Railway, the updated reservation period won’t affect general-class ticket purchases or those already booked. The previous 365-day booking window for foreign tourists remains unchanged.

Benefits of Reduced Reservation Period

Railways officials say the revised 60-day booking policy aims to cut down on cancellations and no-shows, a trend where passengers book tickets but don’t travel. The change is also expected to discourage agents from hoarding tickets and will help Indian Railways better predict demand and plan for additional trains.

The Press Information Bureau (PIB) noted that 21% of bookings made for the 61- to 120-day period were later canceled, and around 5% of passengers didn’t show up. The shorter reservation period is expected to support better planning for peak travel seasons and special train arrangements.

Special Trains for Festive Travel Rush

In response to increased demand during the festive season, Indian Railways has also introduced extra trains to manage the high passenger volume. Dilip Kumar, Executive Director of Information and Publicity for the Railway Board, shared that over 160 special trains were deployed for Diwali, with plans to run more than 170 trains daily, especially for travelers heading to Bihar and Uttar Pradesh for Chhath Pooja.

Additionally, Government Railway Police (GRP), Railway Protection Force (RPF) staff, and Rail Sewaks are assisting passengers during the rush.

The viral clip has sparked various responses, with many users suggesting she should try traveling in first class for a better experience. One user commented, “You are traveling in second class, which is one of the cheapest options. Try first class to capture the real picture.” Another added, “For a journey this affordable, it’s expected. Indian middle class rarely travels in this class. Upgrade for a more hygienic experience.”

Cultural Insights: Balancing Affordability and Comfort

In a follow-up post, Moreno shared another video highlighting the conditions of a first-class train restroom, noting improvements in cleanliness compared to her initial experience. Her video has spurred debate around budget-conscious travel in India, with users pointing out that trains like Vande Bharat offer a cleaner and more comfortable experience for travelers willing to pay more.

Moreno’s posts underline the challenges and contrasts in train travel across classes in India, drawing both criticism and cultural insights as travelers advocate for better hygiene standards while balancing budget and expectations.

Dilip Kumar, Executive Director of Information & Publicity at the Railway Board, highlighted that additional services are being arranged to manage the festive rush. “Passenger numbers rise significantly in certain regions like Bihar and Uttar Pradesh during this period. To meet demand, we’ve expanded from 4,300 to over 7,000 special trains across major stations, including Delhi, Ahmedabad, Mumbai, Chennai, Bengaluru, and Vishakhapatnam,” he stated.

Enhanced security measures with RPF and CRPF personnel have been implemented, along with more ticket counters. Kumar also mentioned that clone trains will follow high-demand routes, providing additional seating. “These clone trains will operate around 15 minutes after the original trains to meet the increased demand,” he said.

During a press conference, Northern Railway’s General Manager Ashok Kumar Verma outlined the region’s extensive plan, with 3,144 trips scheduled from October 1 to November 30, 2024. Approximately 85% of these special trains will serve routes toward UP, Bihar, Jharkhand, West Bengal, and Assam, with an extra 1.20 lakh berths available over the peak 13-day period.

Dilip Kumar, Executive Director of Information and Publicity at the Railway Board, confirmed that these additional services aim to ease the travel experience for millions of passengers across the country.

Special trains will depart from major stations nationwide, including Old Delhi, New Delhi, Anand Vihar, Ahmedabad, Mumbai, Chennai, Bengaluru, and Vishakhapatnam. Emphasizing the scale of this operation, Kumar noted, “Previously, we operated 4,300 special trains. This year, we have significantly increased the number to over 7,000 to meet demand.”

Security and Ticketing Arrangements Enhanced

To ensure safe and smooth operations, the Railways has increased the presence of Railway Protection Force (RPF) and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) at stations. More ticket counters have also been opened to reduce waiting times for passengers.

A new initiative includes clone trains running on high-demand routes, scheduled to depart 15 minutes after the original train to provide additional seat availability. “Popular routes with high demand will have a clone train running shortly after the primary train,” Kumar explained.

Northern Railway Leads with Extra Services

Northern Railway will operate the largest share, planning 3,144 trips between October 1 and November 30, primarily to regions like Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, West Bengal, and Assam. Over the next thirteen days, 65 extra trains will depart daily from Delhi, offering 1.2 lakh additional berths for travelers, according to Northern Railway General Manager Ashok Kumar Verma.

The internet has found inspiration in Sanjeev Sharma, a mechanical engineer and IIT Roorkee graduate, whose career path from a government job in Indian Railways to a key position at Elon Musk’s SpaceX—has captured attention on LinkedIn. His incredible journey showcases not just professional growth but a testament to hard work, continuous learning, and bold career shifts.

From Indian Railways to Higher Education

Sanjeev Sharma began his career with Indian Railways after graduating from IIT Roorkee. He served as a Divisional Mechanical Engineer for four years before being promoted to Deputy Chief Mechanical Engineer in 1994. Sharma worked for a little over 11 years in this role before seeking new challenges. In 2002, he decided to pursue further education and enrolled in a one-year MS program in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Colorado Boulder, which he completed in 2003.

A Shift to Tech and Aerospace

After his studies, Sharma transitioned to the private sector, joining Seagate Technology as a Staff Mechanical Engineer. He rose to the position of Senior Mechanical Engineer in 2008, while also earning an MS in Management of Technology from the University of Minnesota. He worked at Seagate for five years, gaining invaluable experience before his next major career leap—joining SpaceX.

In 2013, Sharma began his journey with SpaceX as a Dynamics Engineer, where he played a crucial role in structural dynamics, working closely with teams in aerodynamics, propulsion, and thermal engineering. His contributions were key to the recovery and reusability of the first-stage booster from the Falcon 9 flight F9-005 to F9-0059.

Leading in Drone Technology and Returning to SpaceX

In 2018, Sharma moved to Matternet Inc., a leader in commercial drone delivery systems, where he led vehicle engineering and later headed the technology division. His leadership was instrumental in shaping the company’s technological direction. After two years, Sharma returned to SpaceX in 2022, this time as a Principal Engineer for Starship Dynamics, based in Hawthorne, California.

Inspiring Career of Growth and Innovation

Sanjeev Sharma’s career, spanning across sectors from railways to aerospace, is a testament to his adaptability, expertise, and leadership. His LinkedIn profile highlights his experience in diverse hardware teams and electro-mechanical systems design, making him an inspiration to many in the engineering and tech world.

With a background rooted in hard work and ambition, Sharma’s journey from Indian Railways to working on reusable rockets for SpaceX has set a benchmark for aspiring professionals, showing that career evolution knows no limits.

A Heartfelt Reunion

The video captures a police officer holding the girl in his arms, loudly announcing her rescue to alert other members of the search party. After the girl was found, she was immediately taken to a hospital, where her father expressed immense gratitude to the authorities for their prompt actions. According to reports, the child had fallen from the emergency window of a moving train.

Social Media Applauds the Heroes

The incident has garnered widespread appreciation on social media, with many users praising the UP Police for their heroic efforts. Comments ranged from “I am proud of UP Police” to “Heroes ko salaam (Salute to heroes),” reflecting the public’s gratitude for the swift actions taken to save the child. Others expressed their admiration with emojis of clapping hands and hearts, celebrating the commendable work of the police force.

A History of Quick Thinking

This incident is not the first time UP Police have demonstrated their commitment to passenger safety. Earlier this year, a constable at Haridwar’s Laksar railway station saved a man from potential injury after he slipped while trying to board a moving train. Such instances highlight the ongoing efforts of police and railway authorities to prioritize the safety and well-being of passengers.

The bravery and dedication exhibited by the UP Police and railway authorities in this recent rescue operation serve as a reminder of the critical role they play in ensuring public safety. Their quick response not only saved a young girl’s life but also reaffirmed the community’s trust in their commitment to protect and serve.

The video depicts a confrontation between two individuals in the sleeper coach of a train. One man, traveling without a reservation, demands to sit on the Side Upper berth already occupied by another passenger. The passenger, who had reserved the seat, refuses to move, leading to a heated exchange.

In the video, the man without a ticket sarcastically asks the reserved passenger if he plans to take the seat home with him. The other passenger retorts, explaining that he paid to reserve the seat for a comfortable journey and urges the man to find a vacant spot elsewhere.

The incident has sparked a wave of reactions online. Many social media users expressed frustration with the increasing number of people traveling without tickets, causing inconvenience for those who have paid for their seats.

One commenter shared their anger, stating, “It infuriates me every time I see someone without a ticket asking passengers who have paid for theirs to ‘adjust.’ It’s unfair and disrespectful! Why should people who follow the rules have to make space for those who don’t?”

The video has intensified calls for Indian Railways to enforce stricter regulations to prevent unauthorized passengers from entering reserved coaches, a problem many feel has been neglected for too long.

A Mumbai-Ahmedabad bound Tejas Express passenger faced a distressing ordeal when the train was abruptly canceled mid-journey due to heavy rains across Gujarat. Associate Professor Prithwiraj Mukherjee took to social media platform X (formerly Twitter) to share his frustrating experience, revealing how he and other passengers were stranded at Vadodara junction for several hours without any official communication.

Stranded Without Information

Prithwiraj Mukherjee described the chaotic situation in a detailed thread, stating that the train’s air conditioning was turned off, leaving passengers to endure the sweltering heat as they waited for updates. Despite the severe weather conditions affecting rail services, a Vande Bharat Express train, which had been running parallel to Tejas Express, managed to reach Ahmedabad. This prompted Mukherjee to question why the Tejas Express could not proceed if the Vande Bharat was able to continue its journey.

HAVE A LOOK AT THE POST:

Dear all. I am on the Tejas Express 82901. Got on at Mumbai Central at 1545 and should have reached Ahmedabad Junction at 2215. Due to rain, the train has been canceled at Vadodara.

Allegations of Preferential Treatment

Mukherjee also voiced concerns about what he perceived as “preferential treatment” given to the Vande Bharat train. He expressed frustration over the lack of communication from railway officials and criticized the management for failing to address the passengers’ concerns. He claimed that the situation worsened when some passengers approached railway officers, who eventually agreed to help them reach Ahmedabad. However, by then, the train had become overcrowded as passengers from other canceled trains boarded the Tejas Express.

HAVE A LOOK:

Passengers Left in Chaos

The situation at Vadodara station remained dire until 6 a.m., with passengers receiving conflicting instructions about their onward journey. Mukherjee shared that everyone was suddenly told to board another train to Ahmedabad, leading to a “mad rush” as passengers scrambled to find space on the new train.

Railway Authorities Respond

Mukherjee’s viral post caught the attention of Railway Seva, the official customer service account of Indian Railways, which issued a clarification. The railways explained that the Vande Bharat Express was able to continue its journey due to its higher clearance and advanced technology, which allowed it to operate safely in deep water. In contrast, other trains, including the Tejas Express, lacked such capabilities and could not be operated when the water level exceeded 150 mm on the tracks.

Railway Seva also urged Mukherjee to share his journey details and assured him that his concerns would be addressed through the appropriate channels.

Social Media Reactions

The post quickly went viral, garnering numerous comments from concerned X users. Many expressed their dismay at the situation and sympathized with the passengers. One user highlighted the need for better communication from the railways to prevent panic among travelers, especially in adverse weather conditions. Others offered words of comfort, hoping that Mukherjee and the other passengers would reach their destination safely.

The Indian Railways is set to revolutionize ticketing with the launch of a new QR code payment system, marking a significant step towards cashless travel. This initiative is part of a broader modernization effort aimed at streamlining railway services and eliminating the need for cash transactions at all stations.

Currently, passengers often face difficulties at ticket counters due to the absence of online payment options, which can lead to inconvenience when cash is unavailable. To tackle this issue, the Malda Division of Eastern Railways is leading the charge in implementing a cashless ticketing system across its stations.

Shiv Prasad, the Additional Divisional Railway Manager (ADRM) of the Malda Division, highlighted that the new dynamic QR code devices at ticket counters will simplify payment processes. These devices will generate payment requests sent directly to passengers’ mobile phones, allowing them to complete transactions electronically. This development is expected to address common problems like disputes over change and improve operational efficiency by minimizing cash handling.

The introduction of this system is anticipated to cater particularly to younger passengers who favor digital payment methods and often do not carry cash. By enhancing passenger convenience and streamlining ticketing operations, the railway system aims to provide a more efficient and modern travel experience.

</excerpt>

Indian Railways is upgrading Garib Rath trains across the country by replacing the old Integral Coach Factory (ICF) cars with Linke-Hofmann-Busch (LHB) coaches. The Amritsar-Saharsa Garib Rath Express recently had its first run with these new LHB coaches, but the experience was less than satisfactory for some passengers.

YouTuber Akshay Malhotra, who runs the channel ‘Journeys with AK’, documented the debut of the upgraded train in a vlog. The train, designated 12204, runs between Saharsa in Bihar and Amritsar in Punjab. It is India’s first Garib Rath service, launched in 2006 to offer affordable air-conditioned travel.

Malhotra began his journey from Amritsar Junction with plans to travel to New Delhi Railway Station (NDLS) but decided to disembark at Dhandari Kalan in Ludhiana. Initially impressed by the new amenities in the LHB coach—including a redesigned seating layout, reading lights, CCTV surveillance, digital washroom signs, a public address system, and AC vents for berths—Malhotra’s enthusiasm soon turned to disappointment.

Inside the coach, he found seats covered in a white, grainy substance and a soiled bedsheet. The vlog also highlighted unclean washrooms, with one showing signs of a leaking ceiling.

The train made an unscheduled stop at Jalandhar Cantt. railway station due to a “special” train ahead that needed to be cleared for departure. Malhotra got off at Dhandari Kalan, and the train left 10 minutes late, as noted in his vlog.

A recent Indian Railways ticket has shocked the internet, with a premium tatkal ticket on the SMVB Howrah Express from Bengaluru-Kolkata on August 9 priced at an eye-watering ₹10,100. This has sparked widespread discussion online, particularly on Reddit, where a user shared a screenshot of the exorbitant fare.

The post drew attention to the fact that normal tickets on this route typically cost around ₹2,900. The Reddit user expressed confusion over why anyone would pay such a high amount for a 2A ticket on a superfast train, especially when a regular 2A ticket is significantly cheaper. “Honestly, I don’t understand who’d be willing to pay 10k+ for a 2A ticket in an ordinary superfast train between two well-connected metro cities when a regular 2A ticket is priced at 2.9k,” the user wrote.

Here’s The Post:

Posts from the indianrailways
community on Reddit

The debate revolves around the IRCTC’s introduction of the premium tatkal category, which employs dynamic pricing. Unlike the fixed rates of traditional tatkal tickets, the cost of premium tatkal tickets rises with demand, leading to these startling prices.

Criticism of the dynamic pricing model was prevalent in the comments. One Reddit user lamented, “That’s premium tatkal for you. Honestly I feel it is useless, either put these seats under tatkal or general quota. Such high tatkal charges and dynamic charges, doesn’t make sense.” Another commenter suggested, “One might as well travel without a ticket in 2nd AC and pay the fine; it would be less than that 10k.”

Some users questioned why anyone would opt for such an expensive rail ticket when cheaper flights are available. However, a counterpoint highlighted the needs of those who cannot fly or drive due to medical reasons, with one commenter noting, “There are folks who cannot fly due to medical reasons. There are also folks who cannot drive as well. I know this because I am related to a few of them. They are being squeezed due to these new policies.”

The discussion underscores growing frustration with the dynamic pricing system and its impact on travelers.

</excerpt>

A prominent YouTuber, Gulshan Sheikh, known for his channel ‘Gulzar Indian Hacker,’ was arrested by Uttar Pradesh police for creating hazardous videos on railway tracks. Sheikh’s channel, which has over 235,000 subscribers, featured him placing objects like stones, bicycles, and cylinders on railway tracks, posing a severe risk to passengers’ lives.

The arrest took place at Sheikh’s home in Khandrauli, Uttar Pradesh, following a complaint about his dangerous activities on the tracks. BJP spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla confirmed the arrest and referred to Sheikh as a “Rail Jihadi” in a post on X (formerly Twitter). Poonawalla praised the swift actions of the Uttar Pradesh Police, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, and Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath for addressing the threat posed by Sheikh’s stunts.

The Legal Hindu Defence filed the initial complaint, highlighting the significant risks associated with Sheikh’s content. His videos on YouTube and Instagram showcased various objects obstructing railway tracks, often capturing trains approaching these obstructions, creating a dangerous and alarming spectacle for viewers.

The Railway Protection Force (RPF) has charged Sheikh with trespassing, damaging railway property, and public mischief. Examination of Sheikh’s YouTube channel revealed a troubling pattern of risky behavior designed to attract attention. With over 243 videos and shorts, his channel has garnered 137 million views, despite occasional disclaimers urging viewers not to replicate his dangerous stunts.

This arrest comes in the wake of a tragic incident in June, where nine people, including two railway employees, died, and 50 others were injured after an express train collided with a goods train in West Bengal’s Darjeeling district.

Furthermore, the arrest follows recent security concerns, including a bomb threat against 150 schools in Delhi-NCR, traced to an IP address in Budapest, Hungary. Delhi Police is coordinating with Hungarian authorities for further investigation.

The incident underscores the critical importance of responsible content creation, particularly when public safety is at risk. </excerpt>

Congress leader and Lok Sabha MP Gaurav Gogoi on Thursday criticised Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw for not taking moral responsibility for train accidents, dubbing him the “derailment minister.”

Gogoi alleged that Bharatiya Janata Party ministers have been blaming historical issues instead of taking responsibility for recent incidents in the country.

“In the last two months, at least four goods trains have derailed and four people died in July. Ten people were killed in June due to the collision of the Kanchanjunga Express, in addition to thousands being injured. Despite all this, the railway minister has not taken any responsibility,” said Gaurav Gogoi.

At least ten passengers died, and 41 others were injured when three rear coaches of the stationary Sealdah-bound Kanchanjunga Express derailed on June 17 after a goods train collided with it from the rear in West Bengal’s Darjeeling district.

Gogoi also alleged that the railway minister was busy accusing Opposition members and threatening them instead of addressing railway safety. “In 2023 in Odisha, at least 300 people were killed. Who is going to take responsibility for that? In the last year and a half, train accidents have been rising, and the minister is busy with manufacturing. He is not a railway minister, he is a derailment minister,” Gogoi said.

On June 2, 2023, the Coromandel Express collided with a stationary iron ore-laden goods train at Bahanaga Bazar station. Some of its derailed coaches then crashed into the Yeshwantpur-Howrah Express, resulting in India’s worst railway disaster in three decades, killing 293 passengers and injuring 1,100 others.

Gogoi added that the minister’s response in the House was unsatisfactory and avoided accountability, leading the I.N.D.I.A. bloc parties to stage a walkout.

On July 24, Ashwini Vaishnaw announced that the Railway Ministry has allocated Rs 1,112.57 crore to install the Automatic Train Protection (ATP) system, Kavach, for the financial year 2024-25. Kavach is an indigenously developed ATP system that is highly technology-intensive and requires the highest level of safety certification.

The video, shared on social media platform X (formerly Twitter) by the handle ‘Ghar ke kalesh’, has sparked widespread attention, accumulating 36K likes.

The video has generated a mix of reactions online. Many viewers found the conflict to be a common occurrence on trains, while others criticized the man for what they saw as unfairly targeting the family. Some commenters expressed disapproval of the family for possibly occupying seats without proper tickets. Suggestions for solutions like starting unreserved trains were also made, and some criticized the cameraman for always being present during such disputes. The overall sentiment highlights the ongoing challenges of managing seating issues on Indian Railways.

</excerpt>

Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge on Thursday slammed the government over the derailment of Chandigarh-Dibrugarg Express in Uttar Pradesh’s Gonda saying that Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, who leave no opportunity for self-publicity, must take direct responsibility of the massive lapses that have plagued the Indian Railways.

He also demanded that the Kavach anti-collision system should be installed expeditiously on all routes across India to ensure enhanced safety measures and prevent accidents.
His remarks came after at least two people died and seven other injured after six coaches of the Chandigarh-Dibrugarh Express derailed Thursday afternoon in Gonda district of Uttar Pradesh.

Even as relief and rescue operations were underway, the Railways has initiated high-level inquiry into the accident, officials said
In a post on X, formerly Twitter, Kharge, who is also the Leader of Opposition in the Rajya Sabha hitting out at the government said, “The derailment of Chandigarh-Dibrugarh Express in UP, is yet another instance of how Modi government has systematically jeopardised Rail safety.”

He said, “Our deepest condolences to the families of the bereaved, and our thoughts and prayers are with the injured.”
Pointing out fingers on the previous rail accident, the Congress chief said, “A month ago, 11 people lost their lives when a goods train collided with the Sealdah–Agartala Kanchanjunga Express.”

He also pointed out that the Commissioner of Railway safety has said that the accident was “waiting to happen”.
Taking a jibe at the government, Kharge then said that failure of automatic signal, lapses at multiple levels in managing operations, and non-availability of critical safety equipment such as walkie-talkie with the loco pilot and train manager are some of the reasons cited for collision in the probe report.

“Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Railway Minister, who leave no opportunity for self-publicity, must take direct responsibility of the massive lapses that have plagued the Indian Railways,” he alleged.

Putting forth the party’s demand, Kharge said that our single demand — the Kavach anti-collision system should be installed expeditiously on all routes across India to ensure enhanced safety measures and prevent accidents.

</excerpt>

A train that was on its way from Chandigarh to Assam’s Dibrugarh derailed on Thursday near Jhilahi Railway Station near Gonda. At least four coaches derailed, and four people died in the incident.

The frequency of train accidents is worrying. Ideally, the number of train accidents should have come down, considering the technological advancements. But a look at the recent incidents tells a different story. From human error to tech glitches, the reasons vary. The railways seem to have learned little from the previous accidents. They need to pull up stocks now. restore the confidence of lakhs of commuters across the country.

However, these frequent train crashes have given the public the perception that the government’s focus is on premium trains such as Vande Bharat, while the normal trains continue to suffer from a host of issues such as overcrowding, a lack of basic hygiene, etc. The narrative is, however, not substantiated by indisputable facts. The railway ministry, too, has not been really aggressive in countering this narrative being propagated on social media. The previous Modi government’s decision to club the rail budget with the general budget too hasn’t gone down well because some sections of society believe rail safety aspects are not important enough.

National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) records show that roughly 2.6 lakh people have lost their lives in train accidents in the past 10 years.

Now, this Chandigarh to Assam’s Dibrugarh incident has raised safety concerns for the Indian railway. Here is an overview of a few current accidents that have taken place.

2012: On May 22, a cargo train crashed into the Hampi Express near Andhra Pradesh. The collision caused four train cars to flip over, and one caught fire. About 25 people died and 43 were hurt.

2014: On May 26, the Gorakhdham Express hit a stopped freight train near Khalilabad station in Uttar Pradesh. The crash killed 25 people and injured over 50.

2016: On November 20, the Indore-Patna Express went off the tracks near Pukhrayan, Kanpur. At least 150 passengers died and another 150 were injured in this awful accident.

2017: Two major accidents happened this year. On August 23, nine cars of the Kaifiyat Express jumped the tracks near Auraiya, hurting about 70 people. Just a few days earlier, on August 18, the Utkal Express derailed in Muzaffarnagar, killing 23 and injuring around 60.

2022: On January 13, the Bikaner-Guwahati Express had a bad derailment in West Bengal. Twelve train cars went off the tracks, leaving nine people dead and 36 hurt.

2023: A terrible three-train pile-up happened in Odisha on June 2. The crash involved the Bengaluru-Howrah Superfast Express, the Coromandel Express, and a goods train. Around 50 people lost their lives and over 350 were injured in this massive accident.

</excerpt>

The District Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission of Chandigarh has ordered the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) and Indian Railways to refund ₹477.70 for the tickets and pay ₹10,000 to compensate the couple. The couple had sought a refund after their train, which was diverted due to technical reasons, did not stop at their boarding station in Gurgaon.

Bhartendu Sood of Chandigarh filed a complaint stating that on November 29, 2022, he and his wife, Neela Sood, booked two railway tickets for their journey from Gurgaon to Chandigarh on December 13, 2022, totaling ₹477.70. The complainants reported that upon arriving at the station to board the train, they received a message on their registered mobile numbers indicating that the train would not be stopping in Gurgaon on December 13 due to technical reasons.

After this, the complainants took a bus to Chandigarh. A week later, they emailed IRCTC requesting a refund of the ticket amount but were informed that the refund could not be processed as they had not applied within 72 hours at the boarding station.

The complaint stated that “as the complainants were senior citizens, it was not feasible for them to apply for a refund at the boarding station in Gurgaon. Additionally, they hurried to Chandigarh by bus after receiving the IRCTC message.”

In its response, IRCTC stated that it merely provides access to the Railway Passenger Reservation System (PRS) through its server and internet connectivity for ticket bookings. Once a ticket is issued and the fare is transferred to the railways, IRCTC claimed it has no further involvement. Additionally, IRCTC noted that it has no role in the diversion of trains, which is managed by Indian Railways.

In its reply, Indian Railways asserted that it has no connection to the issues raised in the complaint and requested that the complaint against them be dismissed.

Upon reviewing the case, the Commission noted that the Electronic Reservation Slip indicated that IRCTC charged a convenience fee of ₹17.70 for booking the ticket, while Indian Railways charged a ticket fare of ₹460 from the complainants.

“Thus, it stands proved on record that the complainants paid Rs 477.70 to both the IRCTC and the Indian Railways for availing their service for travelling from Gurgaon to Chandigarh on the relevant date, time and place. Moreover, it is an admitted case of the parties that the train did not touch the station at Gurgaon on the relevant date and time, as a result of which the complainants had to travel from Gurgaon to Chandigarh by bus which caused immense harassment to them, hence both IRCTC and Indian Railways cannot escape from their liability, and the aforesaid act amounts to deficiency in service on their part, especially when the entire case set up by the complainant in the consumer complaint as well as the evidence available on record is unrebutted by the IRCTC and Indian Railways,” the Commission stated.
