The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted rainfall for several districts in Himachal Pradesh over the next five days. A yellow alert has been issued for Chamba, Kangra, Mandi, Solan, Sirmaur, Shimla, Una, Bilaspur, and Hamirpur.

Sandeep Kumar Sharma, Senior Scientist at IMD Himachal Pradesh, reported that in the past 24 hours, most areas in Himachal Pradesh experienced light to moderate rainfall. “Districts of Una, Solan, and Hamirpur experienced heavy rains with Una recording the highest at 100 mm. Bilaspur also saw heavy rainfall, and Nadaun reported 72 mm. Solan and Kasauli also experienced significant rainfall,” he stated.

Sharma further noted, “Over the next five to six days, moderate rainfall is expected in most mid-hill areas. From August 12 to 14, heavy rains are anticipated in parts of Solan, Sirmaur, and Una districts. After August 15, most areas will see light to moderate rains. A yellow alert has been issued for these regions in the state.”

He also mentioned that while August has seen a 21 percent increase in rainfall compared to normal, the overall monsoon season’s rainfall is 22 percent below normal. “In districts like Kangra, Mandi, Shimla, Sirmaur, Una, and Bilaspur, monsoon rains have been normal. However, Lahaul-Spiti has recorded a significant shortfall, with rainfall 73 percent below normal. Chamba, Lahaul-Spiti, and Kinnaur have received less rainfall this month, whereas other districts have seen normal to above-normal levels,” Sharma added.

The official also warned that Sirmaur, Solan, and Shimla are expected to experience fog and poor visibility due to low-level clouds, with temperatures remaining below normal. Residents in the areas under the yellow alert are advised to stay vigilant.

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for heatwaves in Delhi, Punjab, Haryana, and most parts of Western Rajasthan, effective from Sunday, May 19. This alert signifies that a severe heatwave has persisted for more than two days, with extreme temperatures expected to last for five days.

Understanding Heatwave Alerts

A heatwave, as defined by the IMD, is a condition where air temperature reaches levels that can be fatal to humans. For plains, a heatwave is declared when temperatures reach at least 40°C, while for hilly regions, it is 30°C or more. Coastal areas see a heatwave alert when temperatures hit 37°C or higher.

A severe heatwave occurs when temperatures exceed the normal range of 4.5°C to 6.4°C. If the rise is more than 6.4°C above normal, the situation is classified as an extreme heatwave. May is typically the peak month for such conditions in India.

Heatwave Impact and Regions Affected

The current heatwave has pushed temperatures in Delhi, Chandigarh, and other major cities in the affected states to around and above 44°C. These extreme temperatures increase the risk of heat illness and heat stroke, especially among vulnerable groups such as the elderly, infants, and those with chronic illnesses. The Chandigarh administration is considering measures such as early school closures to protect students.

Heatwaves commonly impact regions including Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, West Bengal, Odisha, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Gujarat, parts of Maharashtra, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, and Telangana. Occasionally, Tamil Nadu and Kerala also experience heatwaves. Rajasthan and the Vidarbha region often see temperatures soaring above 45°C in May.

Precautions and Safety Measures

To mitigate the effects of heatwaves, the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) recommends the following precautions:

Stay Indoors: Avoid going out in the sun, especially between noon and 3 pm.

Protection: If you must work outside, use a hat or umbrella and apply a damp cloth to your head, neck, face, and limbs.

Hydration: Drink plenty of water regularly, even if you do not feel thirsty.

The Role of Climate Change

A report from Climate Central, a US-based group of climate scientists, indicates that human-caused climate change has significantly increased the likelihood of intense heat events. According to the World Health Organization, over 166,000 people died from heatwaves between 1998 and 2017, highlighting the severe impact of these extreme weather conditions.

Conclusion

The IMD’s red alert underscores the urgent need for preparedness and caution during extreme heat conditions. By taking the recommended precautions, individuals can protect themselves and reduce the risk of heat-related illnesses.

Weather Outlook for Delhi-NCR:

Residents experienced relief from the heat after Friday’s rainfall brought down the maximum temperature to 38°C on Saturday. However, IMD forecasts predict a return to temperatures above 40°C by Monday.

Rainfall Forecast by IMD:

Light rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms is expected over Jammu and Kashmir and Tamil Nadu. Madhya Pradesh, the Vidarbha region of Maharashtra, and north Telangana are also expected to experience rainfall and lightning.

Impact on Himachal Pradesh:

Intermittent rain accompanied by thunderstorms and hail lashed several parts of Himachal Pradesh, with fresh snowfall in tribal areas causing a sharp drop in temperature and closure of over 60 roads.

Precautionary Measures:

The Ministry of Animal Husbandry has taken several measures in response to the bird flu outbreak, including a total restriction on the sale and purchase of all birds in affected areas. Rapid response teams have been deployed to contain the spread of the virus.

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) announced on Saturday that a red alert has been issued for Odisha and Gangetic West Bengal due to severe heatwave conditions in these areas.

Soma Sen Roy, a senior scientist at IMD, highlighted that severe heatwave conditions have persisted in Gangetic West Bengal for several days, warranting the issuance of a red alert. She also noted that while the severity of the heatwave in Odisha, particularly in North Odisha, is not as high as in West Bengal, it remains significant enough to prompt a red alert.

Additionally, Roy emphasized that temperatures are currently significantly elevated and above normal in eastern and peninsular India. Heatwave conditions are also being experienced in East India, South Peninsular India, and the northern parts of Kerala. IMD has issued an Orange alert for East India, covering Bihar and Jharkhand, and a Yellow alert for Eastern Uttar Pradesh and the northern parts of Kerala.

Regarding the weather in northern parts of the country, IMD scientists observed significant thunderstorm activity in some areas, including Delhi, on the previous day. However, they anticipate less weather activity over the North Indian Plains on the current day. Thunderstorms and heavy rains are expected to persist over Jammu and Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh in the Western Himalayan region, prompting an orange alert. A yellow alert has been issued for Punjab, Haryana, Uttarakhand, among other areas. Furthermore, IMD predicts an enhancement in thunderstorm activity, particularly over North-West India, starting from April 29, 2024.

Sen Roy further mentioned that there will be no influence of western disturbances in East India, and heatwave conditions are expected to persist in the eastern region.

This disturbance has induced a low-pressure area over southwest Rajasthan.

A cyclonic circulation is present over northeast Rajasthan, along with an east-west trough extending from this circulation to Gangetic West Bengal across south Uttar Pradesh, south Bihar, and north Jharkhand in the lower tropospheric levels. Additionally, there is a likelihood of high moisture feeding from the Arabian Sea into Northwest India on April 14th and 15th, as per the IMD.

IMD reported that a new Western disturbance is expected to impact Northwest India on April 18. Under the influence of these weather systems, widespread light to moderate rainfall/snowfall with thunderstorm, lightning, and gusty winds (30-40 kmph) are likely over Jammu-Kashmir-Ladakh-Gilgit-BaltistanMuzaffarabad, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand on April 14 and 15, 2024. Moreover, scattered to fairly widespread rainfall with thunderstorm, lightning, and gusty winds (30-40 kmph) is expected over West Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana-Chandigarh-Delhi, Rajasthan, and Madhya Pradesh on April 14 and 15, 2024.

The IMD predicts that isolated hailstorms are highly likely over Jammu Division, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand on April 14th and 15th, as well as over Punjab, Haryana-Chandigarh-Delhi, West Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Madhya Pradesh on April 14th, 2024.

Isolated heavy rainfall/snowfall is highly probable over Jammu-Kashmir-Ladakh-GilgitBaltistan-Muzaffarabad and Himachal Pradesh on April 14th and 15th, 2024. Furthermore, strong surface winds (30-40 kmph) are expected to prevail over Haryana, Chandigarh, and Uttar Pradesh on April 16th and 17th, 2024.

In the previous month, the IMD issued a hailstorm alert and predicted the possibility of rainfall in isolated areas of Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh.

</excerpt>

The Indian Meteorological Department confirmed Cyclone ‘Michaung’ made landfall along the southern coast of Andhra Pradesh, with the severe cyclonic storm expected to continue for the next few hours. The cyclone has already wreaked havoc, with multiple fatalities, closed roads, and inundated subways, particularly in Chennai.

In assessing the aftermath, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin stated that the rains caused by Cyclone Michaung exceeded those seen during the 2015 floods. Despite this, the damages have been relatively minor, owing to Chennai’s resilience and extensive desilting efforts.

Stalin emphasized the need for collective efforts, engaging employees, officials, and relief organizations to address the challenges posed by the disaster. The state government’s swift response involves setting up relief camps, operating kitchens, and ensuring the availability of essential food supplies for affected individuals.

The Chief Minister directed attention to critical aspects such as drainage restoration, relief camp accommodations, and road clearance. Over 5,000 workers from other districts have been mobilized to aid in recovery efforts, with the Chief Secretary and top officials monitoring operations at the Integrated Command and Control Center.

Amidst this crisis, Stalin urged unity among government bodies and relief organizations to mitigate the suffering caused by the calamity, emphasizing the necessity for collaborative action during these challenging times.
