</excerpt>

The increasing use of artificial intelligence in recent times has made image and video editing easier than ever. Some filmmakers even consider the possibility that AI can take over filmmaking soon. But India was ahead of the curve long before AI gained the world’s attention. A recently circulating clip from 1985 film ‘Zulm Ka Badla’ showcases the early example of creative use of technology in cinema. It’s a scene where characters Rakesh Roshan and Jagdish Raj play, Inspector Anil Verma and DIG Verma respectively. In this scene, it shows the lead actress’s picture change almost in the blink of an eye.

In the scene, DIG exposes Anita Raj’s character Geeta Verma who is also known as Mrs. D’Sa. The unusual visual effects, especially in scenes where DIG rubs a picture with a simple cloth have become viral on social media due to the way Indian film-makers of that time applied technology to their films, with the movie being helmed by K Prasad in which DIG Verma adopts his friend’s daughter Geeta. After she marries his son, Anil, the plot twists around when a gangster named Anil is found dead and the father and son start suspecting Geeta for that crime.

The scene has created humorous and interested online, as viewers have commented on how filmmakers achieved such special effects in the 80s. An Instagram user humorously described the scene shared: “Photoshop in those days.”

The term “₹100-crore club” became popular in Bollywood at the end of the 2000s. Films like Ghajini and 3 Idiots achieved this milestone in India. This benchmark quickly became a standard for measuring a film’s success. However, many believe that Ghajini or Om Shanti Om were the first Indian films to reach ₹100 crore. In reality, the first film to achieve this was from the 1980s. It notably did not star traditional icons like Amitabh Bachchan or Rishi Kapoor.

India’s First ₹100-Crore Film

Disco Dancer holds the honor of being the first Indian film to gross ₹100 crore. Directed by Babbar Subhash, this musical drama often gets overlooked in discussions about the ₹100-crore club. The majority of its earnings came from international markets. Released in India in 1982, Disco Dancer earned ₹6.4 crore domestically. This was a significant amount at that time. However, its true success came after its 1984 release in the Soviet Union. The film became a sensation there, selling over 12 crore tickets. It earned 60 million roubles (approximately ₹94.28 crore). This brought its global total to ₹100.68 crore, surpassing Sholay as the highest-grossing Indian film.

Cultural Impact and Legacy

Mithun Chakraborty played the lead role in Disco Dancer. He became a cultural icon in the Soviet Union due to the film’s popularity. For years, Disco Dancer remained a cultural phenomenon in Russia and China. Its songs, especially Jimmy Jimmy, became chart-toppers. Today, many film clubs in Russia still screen Disco Dancer as part of their vintage collections. The film also featured actors like Rajesh Khanna, Kim, Om Puri, Gita Siddharth, and Karan Razdan. Bappi Lahiri’s disco music added to its appeal.

Subsequent ₹100-Crore Films

Disco Dancer paved the way for other Indian films to achieve the ₹100-crore mark. In 1994, Hum Aapke Hain Koun set records with a gross of ₹128 crore. The following year, Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge earned ₹103 crore. Other films that crossed this threshold include Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham, Gadar, Dhoom 2, Krrish, and Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna. These films generated significant earnings from foreign markets. The ₹100-crore club became firmly established in 2008 when Ghajini earned ₹120 crore in India alone.

Akshay Kumar, one of Indian cinema’s most beloved and bankable stars, celebrated his 57th birthday on September 9. Known for his versatility, the actor has carved a niche for himself in the industry, starring in a wide array of films, from romantic dramas and action-packed thrillers to comedies. His magnetic screen presence, coupled with impressive dancing and fighting skills, has cemented him as an all-rounder in the industry.

A Childhood with Big Dreams

Born Rajiv Hari Om Bhatia, Akshay’s journey to stardom wasn’t easy. He recalled a moment from his school days when his father, frustrated with his poor academic performance, almost reprimanded him. Instead, he urged him to think about his future. Young Akshay confidently replied, “I will become a hero.” Despite scoring low marks, his passion for sports stood out. He excelled in various games, including volleyball and cricket, but his real interest was in martial arts.

Akshay convinced his father to let him pursue his passion for Karate, leading him to Bangkok for rigorous training. For five years, he honed his skills there, a journey that laid the foundation for his future as an action hero. After his training, he worked in various cities, even dabbling in Kundan Jewellery in Delhi.

From Martial Arts Instructor to Bollywood Star

Upon returning to Mumbai, Akshay began teaching martial arts, earning Rs 5,000 to Rs 6,000 per month. During this period, a chance opportunity in modeling came his way, and his life took a turn. From making a modest income, he was suddenly offered Rs 21,000 for a single photoshoot. With that, his career started to take off, marking the beginning of his journey in Bollywood.

A Three-Decade Reign in Bollywood

In a career spanning nearly 30 years, Akshay has appeared in about 150 films, establishing himself as a versatile and disciplined actor. His association with the superhit Khiladi franchise earned him the nickname “Khiladi Kumar.” Despite facing setbacks, his relentless work ethic and dedication to his craft have kept him at the top of his game.

Akshay Kumar’s story is one of resilience, determination, and success, from humble beginnings to becoming one of the most bankable stars in Indian cinema. His ability to entertain across genres has made him a fan favorite and a force to be reckoned with in Bollywood.

</excerpt>

The Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), North America’s largest film event, is set to place a significant focus on Indian cinema as part of its programming strategy. The 11-day festival, running from September 5 to September 15, aims to “lean into” the Indian film industry, according to Anita Lee, TIFF’s chief programming officer.

In an interview at TIFF’s headquarters, the Lightbox, Lee highlighted the festival’s commitment to showcasing Indian cinema. “That is important to our programme. We do plan to lean into it further going ahead,” she said. To strengthen its connection with the Indian film industry, TIFF has appointed Meenakshi Shedde, a programming advisor based in India, who joined last year. Shedde’s role involves recommending films from India, with the final selection being made by Robyn Citizen, TIFF’s director of programming.

This year, five Indian films will be featured at the 49th edition of the festival. Among them are the world premieres of Superboys of Malegaon, directed by Reema Kagti, and Boong, the first-ever Manipuri project at TIFF, directed by Lakshmipriya Devi. Another highlight is All We Imagine As Light by Payal Kapadia, which has already garnered international acclaim, winning the Grand Prix at the Cannes Film Festival in May. The Hindi-language film Santosh, directed by Sandhya Suri, will also be showcased.

Payal Kapadia is a returning filmmaker at TIFF; her documentary A Night of Knowing Nothing screened at the festival in 2021 and won the Amplify Voices Award. Superboys of Malegaon has been selected as the gala presentation, a category reserved for mainstream crowd-pleasers, reflecting the festival’s recognition of the strong audience demand for star-driven Indian films.

Additionally, one of the principal attractions this year will be the high-quality digital restoration of the 1951 classic Awara, directed by and starring the legendary Raj Kapoor. The special screening will honor Kapoor’s 100th birth anniversary.

He even won the Filmfare Award for Best Male Debut – South after which his career gained momentum. He then quickly emerged as one of the most sought-after actors of Telugu cinema.

He soon tried to find a foothold in the Hindi film industry with Zanjeer, a remake of Amitabh Bachchan’s cult film of the same name, but things didn’t go as planned. He says Indian cinema is in its “golden phase” now, and the glory for the RRR (2022) track and the documentary The Elephant Whisperers have helped command all the more respect.

The actor says, “This is a golden period for Indian cinema. Music and dance have begun our strength. Now, the world has recognised it.” Further, he adds “I’m sure global players will want to collaborate with Indian makers like SS Rajamouli sir.”

The Hindi film versus southern language films debate was a range on social media. But, the actor feels it was a mountain out of a molehill. Nani also spilled beans on the success and failure mantra. He is also keen on exploring Bollywood. The Jersey actor says “I have got offers from Hindi film industry before too, but things didn’t fall in place. I have grown up watching and loving Hindi films in cinema and TV. I must have watched DDLJ some 30-40 times. So, if I like a script I will surely do it but there should be a reason do it and for that matter it can be any language….”

According to Nani, the ongoing debate between Indian and regional cinema has been a mountain out of a molehill. On the work front, the actor is currently gearing up for the release of his highly anticipated project Dasara this month. The film also marks his onscreen reunion with the National award-winning actress Keerthy Suresh. Earlier, the duo was seen in the 2017 release Nenu Local.
