“My Kids are Young. I am Not in the Mood to…”: Ashish Nehra Explains Why He Didn’t Apply for India Coach Role

July 25, 2024, 2:12 pm

Ashish Nehra has shed light on why he chose not to apply for the India head coach position, despite being one of the names floating in the media. While Gautam Gambhir’s appointment as the new head coach was made official earlier this month, Nehra explained his decision in a recent interview.

Nehra, 45, highlighted that his children are still young, and he did not want to commit to a job that would require him to travel for nine months. He mentioned, “Meri abhi kabhi us tareh soch nahi gayi hai. My kids are young. GG ke bacche bhi abhi young hai par sabki soch alag alag hoti hai, toh I am very happy where I am. I am not in the mood to travel for nine months (I never thought about it. My children are still young. Gautam Gambhir also has young children, but everyone has different ideas. That’s why I am happy where I am. I am not in the mood to travel for nine months).”

Gambhir’s appointment follows his successful stint as the mentor of the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR). The BCCI had a preference for an Indian coach, and Gambhir’s name was confirmed on July 9, succeeding Rahul Dravid. Nehra, who has also been mentioned in the media for the role, chose to prioritize his family commitments over the demanding schedule of the national team’s head coach position.

In a recent media briefing, Gambhir confirmed the appointment of two assistant coaches, Ryan Ten Doeschate and Abhishek Nayar, both of whom he worked closely with at KKR. The complete list of coaches will be finalized after the Sri Lanka tour. Gambhir expressed his satisfaction with the board’s support and his excitement to work with the new coaching staff.

Gambhir stated, “This is going to be the crux of the support staff. As I said, we still have one month after the Sri Lanka tour. We will try and finalize after the Sri Lanka tour. But, I have worked with people like Abhishek Nayar, Ryan Ten Doeschate very closely. In the last two months, especially in the IPL, I have enjoyed working with them. They are thorough professionals. Hope Ryan and Abhishek can have a successful stint.”

He further added, “Hopefully, we can have a successful tenure as coaches. I am really looking forward to work with the rest of the other guys as well. I have had some really good feedback from the players about the other guys. I am really looking forward to working with them. My experience and learning have been very simple.”

Kohli Not Consulted Before Gambhir’s Appointment as Head Coach – Know Why

July 11, 2024, 2:01 pm

Gautam Gambhir’s appointment as head coach of the Indian cricket team has stirred significant attention, especially given his history with star batter Virat Kohli. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) confirmed Gambhir’s selection, replacing Rahul Dravid, and he will join the team for the upcoming white-ball tour of Sri Lanka starting later this month. The BCCI’s Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC), consisting of Ashok Malhotra, Jatin Paranjape, and Sulakshana Naik, unanimously recommended Gambhir for the role.

Interestingly, Virat Kohli was not consulted by the BCCI before the announcement of Gambhir’s appointment. Kohli’s fiery on-field relationship with Gambhir is well-known, highlighted by their infamous spat during an IPL 2023 match in Lucknow. Despite their public reconciliations during IPL 2024, Kohli’s opinion was not sought, likely because he is no longer part of the T20I setup.

A BCCI official mentioned that there would be ample time for Kohli and Gambhir to discuss matters, but the focus was on the broader picture, especially with many young players expected to join the team in the coming years.

Additionally, Hardik Pandya, who is a frontrunner to become India’s next T20I captain, was consulted regarding Gambhir’s appointment. However, the relationship between India captain Rohit Sharma and Gambhir remains to be seen, especially since Rohit had expressed his preference for Dravid to continue as head coach.

Reports suggest that both Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli have requested extended breaks from the BCCI and are likely to miss Gambhir’s debut series as head coach against Sri Lanka. India is scheduled to play three T20Is and three ODIs against Sri Lanka, starting on July 28.

Is BCCI Thinking of Hiring Both Gautam Gambhir and WV Raman as Indian Coaches? – See What Latest Report Suggests

June 20, 2024, 2:59 pm

The competition for the head coach role of the Indian men’s cricket team has intensified as former cricketers Gautam Gambhir and WV Raman emerge as the main contenders. Until recently, Gambhir was seen as the clear frontrunner, with reports suggesting that the BCCI had nearly finalized a deal with him, with an official announcement expected after India’s campaign in the ongoing 2024 T20 World Cup. However, WV Raman, with his extensive coaching experience, has now entered the fray.

Raman’s coaching credentials include stints with Tamil Nadu and Bengal in domestic cricket, assistant coaching for Punjab in the IPL, and serving as the head coach of the Indian women’s cricket team from 2018 to 2021. He also has a personal connection with Gambhir, having helped him regain form in 2013 before they worked together at Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), where Gambhir led the team to their second IPL title in 2014.

Despite Gambhir’s relatively limited coaching experience, primarily as a mentor for two IPL franchises, his success with KKR adds weight to his candidacy. The BCCI’s Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC), consisting of Ashok Malhotra, Jatin Paranjape, and Sulakshana Naik, interviewed both candidates, and Raman’s impressive interview has reportedly led to consideration of utilizing both Gambhir and Raman in the coaching setup.

A source tracking the developments suggested that the BCCI might employ both candidates in complementary roles, such as Gambhir as head coach and Raman as batting coach or assigning more responsibilities to Raman in red-ball cricket. This approach could leverage the strengths of both individuals to benefit Indian cricket.

The CAC faces a challenging decision in choosing between Gambhir and Raman, especially since no overseas candidate has been interviewed yet, narrowing the choice to these two experienced Indian options.

What Was Gautam Gambhir & WV Raman Asked in Their Head Coach Interviews? – Here’s the Detailed Report

June 19, 2024, 4:11 pm

Gautam Gambhir and WV Raman were both interviewed for approximately 40 minutes each by the Cricket Advisory Committee for the role of India’s head coach. The interviews took place over Zoom, as both Gambhir and Raman preferred virtual interaction. The CAC members, including Ashok Malhotra, Jatin Paranjape, and Sulakshana Naik, were impressed by the presentations of both candidates. It is reported that Gambhir is the frontrunner for the head coach role, and another round of discussion is expected to take place before the official announcement by the BCCI.

During the interviews, the CAC asked several questions focused on the candidates’ vision for the next three years, including their ideas regarding the coaching staff, handling the transition phase with ageing players, views on split captaincy, fitness parameters, and addressing the team’s failure to win ICC trophies.

Gambhir’s successful mentoring of the Kolkata Knight Riders to the IPL 2024 trophy has added substantial weight to his coaching credentials, despite his lack of coaching experience outside of the IPL. His potential appointment would mark a departure from Rahul Dravid’s pathway to coaching, as Dravid transitioned from India U19 and A coach to international coaching. However, the transition of recently retired cricketers to coaching, as seen with Gambhir, has its positives, given his extensive experience and understanding of the changing demands of present-day cricket.

Both Gambhir and Raman delivered impressive presentations during their interviews for the head coach role, with Gambhir emerging as the likely frontrunner. The final decision on the head coach is awaited, and the BCCI is expected to make the announcement after further discussions.

“Gambhir Turns Everything He Touches Into Gold”: Kamran Akmal Roots for Gautam Gambhir as Team India’s Head Coach

June 19, 2024, 3:23 pm

Former India batsman Gautam Gambhir, who recently guided Kolkata Knight Riders to an IPL title as the team’s mentor, underwent an interview with the BCCI’s Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC) on Tuesday for the role of the national team’s head coach. It is highly probable that Gambhir will succeed Rahul Dravid, who plans to step down after India’s T20 World Cup campaign in the Americas.

Dravid had already extended his tenure following last year’s ODI World Cup but opted not to continue beyond the T20 World Cup in the USA and Caribbean.

Former Pakistan wicketkeeper-batsman Kamran Akmal expressed strong support for Gambhir, labeling him as the ideal candidate for the head coach position. Akmal also suggested considering legendary pacers Ashish Nehra or Zaheer Khan for the role of bowling coach.

“Gambhir jo cheez chootha hai, wo sona ban jaati hai. Wo jis team se judta hai, wo successful ho jaati hai (Gambhir turns everything he touches into gold. Teams he associates with tend to succeed),” Kamran told Times of India.

“Team India doesn’t need foreign coaches. They have ample options and talent. After Dravid, no one can be better or bigger than Gautam Gambhir. He was a prominent player and will make an excellent coach. He’s the best choice India has right now.

“Gambhir was successful with Lucknow Super Giants (LSG). As KKR’s mentor, they became champions under him. He’s a meticulous planner with an exceptional cricketing acumen. I’ve played a lot with him; we’ve shared meals and conversations. We’re still good friends and in touch,” he added.

“He’s the right person to coach Team India. He should be the head coach. India can consider Ashish Nehra or Zaheer Khan for the bowling coach role,” Kamran emphasized.

Current head coach Rahul Dravid is presently with the team for the T20 World Cup in the Americas. India topped Group A and is now in Barbados for the Super 8 stage, facing Afghanistan on June 20 in their first match.

Praising Dravid, Kamran Akmal acknowledged his significant contributions to Indian cricket as both a batsman and a coach.

“Rahul Dravid has contributed immensely to Indian cricket. Not just with his batting, but also as a coach. He’s implemented a unique model with Team India. He belongs to the league of greats like Tendulkar, Ganguly, and Dhoni, who have enriched Indian cricket. Team India should leverage the expertise of these legends as much as possible,” Kamran stated.

“Dravid started coaching at the U-19 level, moved to the NCA, and then took charge of the senior team. Look at his journey; he believes in building strong foundations. He’s shaped this current Indian team. While they dominate on the field, credit behind the scenes goes to Rahul Dravid,” he concluded.

Gautam Gambhir To Be Interviewed For India Head Coach Role In Mumbai Today

June 18, 2024, 12:47 pm

Today marks a pivotal moment in Indian cricket as Gautam Gambhir, the former Indian cricketer and acclaimed mentor of Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), is set to interview for the prestigious role of head coach of the Indian men’s cricket team. The Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC) will conduct the interview here in Mumbai, starting at 12 pm IST.

Gambhir, a World Cup-winning hero from 2011, has emerged as a frontrunner to succeed Rahul Dravid, whose tenure concludes after the ongoing T20 World Cup. Dravid, who confirmed his departure earlier, expressed his decision not to continue beyond his current term.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) had previously invited applications for the head coach position, with Gambhir’s name prominently in discussions following his successful stint with KKR, guiding them to their third Indian Premier League (IPL) title.

Anil Kumble, former India head coach and legendary spinner, endorsed Gambhir’s credentials but cautioned that the role of coaching the national team differs significantly. “You will have to give him time to settle in,” Kumble remarked, highlighting the adjustment needed for Gautam Gambhir to transition effectively into this new responsibility.

The Indian team, under Dravid’s leadership, is currently competing in the T20 World Cup in the West Indies and the United States, aiming to secure their first ICC title since the 2013 Champions Trophy. With Gambhir’s interview today, the BCCI remains focused on ensuring a smooth transition to new leadership in this crucial period for Indian cricket.

As the interview unfolds, all eyes are on Gambhir and the outcome that could shape the future of coaching for one of the world’s most followed cricket teams.

This is a developing story.

Would Love to Coach Indian Team, There Is No Bigger Honour…”: Gautam Gambhir

June 3, 2024, 5:31 am

Amidst speculation surrounding India’s new head coach, former cricketer Gautam Gambhir expressed his willingness to take on the role, considering it an “honour” to coach the Indian cricket team. With Rahul Dravid’s tenure as head coach nearing its end after the conclusion of the T20 World Cup 2024 in June, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is evaluating potential candidates.

During an event at Medeor Hospital in Abu Dhabi, Gambhir interacted with students, where one of them inquired about his interest in coaching the Indian team and guiding them to World Cup victory. Gambhir responded enthusiastically, expressing his desire to coach the national team, emphasizing the honour it entails in representing the vast Indian population.

As India prepares to commence their T20 World Cup campaign against Ireland on June 5 in New York, Gambhir believes that winning the World Cup is a collective effort, requiring support from every Indian, both on and off the field. He emphasized the importance of fearlessness and unity in achieving success.

During his visit to the UAE, Gambhir engaged with young cricket enthusiasts and shared insights from his illustrious career. Praised for his recent success as the mentor of Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), Gambhir emphasized the significance of fostering a secure and harmonious team environment, attributing KKR’s triumph in the IPL to this ethos.

Gambhir also imparted valuable advice on sportsmanship, emphasizing the values of hard work, discipline, and treating one’s team as a family. He highlighted the importance of fairness and unity in cricket, emphasizing that success is a collective endeavor.

Gambhir’s interaction was part of a special event aimed at inspiring young athletes and showcasing the sports medicine services offered by Medeor Hospital. Safeer Ahamed, Group COO of Burjeel Holdings, accompanied Gambhir during the visit, providing insights into the group’s initiatives to promote sports and well-being.

Ricky Ponting, CSK Coach Among Top Contenders for India Head Coach

May 16, 2024, 3:57 pm

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is on the lookout for a new head coach for the men’s cricket team as Rahul Dravid’s tenure will conclude after the T20 World Cup 2024. Dravid, reportedly, has been reluctant to reapply for the position, indicating a desire to spend more time with family. Despite speculations, the BCCI remains opposed to adopting a system like South Africa, Pakistan, and England, which segregate coaching duties between red-ball and white-ball cricket due to India’s unified player group across formats.

While initial rumors pointed to VVS Laxman as a potential successor, he has shown no inclination to apply, intending to continue with the India ‘A’ team. The race for the head coach position includes former Australian cricketer Justin Langer, along with other prominent names like Stephen Fleming, Gautam Gambhir, and Ashish Nehra. BCCI has also been engaging with IPL coaches and mentors in their pursuit of finding a new head coach.

Among the contenders, Ricky Ponting emerges as a frontrunner, although his involvement with the Washington Freedom in the USA’s Major League Cricket presents scheduling challenges. With India’s upcoming series in Zimbabwe and Ponting’s commitments in the MLC, finalizing a decision poses a significant hurdle for the BCCI and Ponting.

Other potential options include Stephen Fleming, renowned for his coaching stint with Chennai Super Kings in the IPL. As Dravid’s contract approaches its end after the T20 World Cup, the BCCI has initiated the application process for the head coach role, with a deadline set for May 27.

BCCI Opens Application: Justin Langer Interested In Replacing Rahul Dravid As India’s Head Coach

May 14, 2024, 12:20 pm

As BCCI opens accepting candidates application for India’s Head Couch on Rahul Dravid’s position, Langer voiced his “curiosity.”

Langer is the head coach of the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) in IPL 2024 and a former opener for Australia.

The BCCI invited applications for the same on Monday night.as Rahul Dravid’s Tenure comes to an end ahead T20 World Cup 2024.

‘Well, I am curious,’ Langer told TOI when asked whether he would apply for the post.

“I’ve never ever thought about it. I have deep respect for any international coach because I understand the pressure, but coaching the Indian team would be an extraordinary role. From what I’ve seen with the amount of talent I’ve seen in this country, it would be fascinating,” he added.

Jay Shah, the secretary of the BCCI, had previously stated that Dravid would need to apply and go through the selection process like any other candidate if he wanted to stay on as the Indian team’s head coach. But that doesn’t seem likely. When Dravid’s contract expired following the ODI World Cup last year, he was already in no mood to continue. Given that the T20 World Cup was only seven or eight months away, he and his entire support team were granted an extension.

Shah also hinted at the possibilty of roping in a foreign coach. The last foreign coach to grace Indian cricket was Duncan Fletcher. Since he stepped down in 2014, India have had three full-time head coaches (all former India cricketers and big names) – Anil Kumble, Ravi Shastri and Rahul Dravid.

Langer, A Strong Candidate For India Head Coach’s Position

Langer comes with a legacy of 105 Tests, scoring 7696 runs at an average of 45. Moreover, he has successfully coached the Australian team for close to four years and was the protagonist in the revival of Australian cricket after the Sandpapergate in 2018. Under his tenure, Australia also won their maiden T20 World Cup title in 2021.

Langer also has the experience of coaching LSG, an IPL franchise. In his maiden stint as the head coach of an IPL franchise, had a mixed bag. LSG are still in the race of to qualify for the playoffs but questions have been asked about the team’s approach.

“When you’re a player, you have control. You take absolute responsibility for your performance. The only thing that’s out of your control is selection, or what the media writes or what people think of you. You focus only on watching the ball. If you make runs, the only currency of value is runs. If you make runs, you get selected. If you get selected, you get a contract,” Langer said about his debut season as LSG’s head coach.
