As Jharkhand awaits the results of its 2024 Assembly Elections, BJP leader Babulal Marandi expressed confidence in a clear victory. He stated that the BJP-led NDA would win over 51 seats and form the next government. He blamed the Hemant Soren-led government’s corruption and poor governance for the anticipated shift.

Marandi shared his optimism before the vote counting began on Saturday. He said, “Look, regarding the government, we had some regrets, but after the elections, based on the feedback we received from grassroots-level workers, I can say with confidence that this time the BJP and the NDA alliance will secure 51-plus seats in Jharkhand, and the NDA will form the government here.”

Key Reasons for Confidence

Marandi identified corruption as a major issue under the current administration. He explained that the government failed to deliver development and allowed law and order to worsen. He accused the Soren government of encouraging illegal practices. “The Hemant government was settling [Bangladeshi infiltrators] here, making their ration cards, Aadhaar cards, linking them to voter lists, and even getting land registered in their names,” he said. According to him, this angered people and drove them to support the BJP.

He also emphasized that the BJP-NDA alliance received widespread support across regions. On the question of who would become the next chief minister, he said, “Wait until this evening when all the results will be out. The legislative party will meet, and the leader will be chosen. After that, we will call everyone and let you (media) know.”

BJP Spokesperson Echoes Optimism

BJP spokesperson Pratul Shah Deo also sounded hopeful. He declared, “This morning has brought a new ray of hope to Jharkhand. There is great excitement among people. The end of the dark night of corruption, atrocities on women, loot, and corruption for 5 years is near…When the sun sets, it will be a political sunset for the Soren dynasty. NDA will form the Government by winning the highest number of seats in the history of Jharkhand.”

Opposition Pushes Back

Meanwhile, Congress leader Rajesh Thakur remained confident about the INDI alliance. He highlighted the popularity of their welfare policies. “The stamp of approval by people on schemes like the Old Pension Scheme, farm loan waivers, free electricity, and women’s welfare initiatives will reflect in the results,” he said. Thakur predicted an even stronger government under the alliance.

All Eyes on Results

The battle for Jharkhand has set the stage for a political showdown. While the BJP bets on anti-incumbency and governance issues, the INDI alliance banks on its welfare promises. The final results will reveal which vision resonates more with the people.

Chief Minister Hemant Soren is facing controversy over his age, with accusations about inconsistencies in his records. In response, his wife, JMM MLA Kalpana Soren, questioned the BJP’s fixation on age as a major issue. She argued that the BJP lacks meaningful topics against Hemant Soren and is instead bringing this “age controversy” to the forefront.

“Has age become such a major factor?… I think if you (BJP) are so scared of Hemant Soren, you are not getting any topic…You have seen your future and your fear says that you have been so scared of Hemant Soren ever since you sent him to jail and he came out…Today, the people of Jharkhand trust Hemant Soren…,” Kalpana Soren said on Friday.

Himanta Biswa Sarma Criticizes JMM’s Credibility

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, a BJP co-in-charge for Jharkhand’s Assembly elections, dismissed the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) as “fake.” He claimed the party’s records, including property details and age declarations, are not trustworthy. Sarma also called the current Jharkhand administration a “government of infiltrators.” He cautioned that public safety would be at risk if JMM continues in power. “It is the responsibility of the people of Jharkhand to remove them from power,” he added.

Sanjay Seth Points to Age Discrepancies in Nomination Papers

Union Minister of State for Defence Sanjay Seth also voiced concerns about Hemant Soren’s age declarations. He pointed out that Soren’s age appeared to increase by seven years in just five years, based on his nomination papers. At a press conference in Ranchi, Seth remarked, “We guarantee that the information we provide on nomination papers is accurate. In 2019, Hemant Soren declared his date of birth on his nomination papers, yet in 2024, he appears to have aged by seven years in just five. What magic is this? Aisa jaadu ki Devta bhi hairaan hai (such magic, even gods astonished).” Seth accused Soren of fraud, alleging this discrepancy amounts to deceiving the Election Commission.

BJP Demands Action from the Election Commission

Seth also criticized the INDI alliance, including JMM, for frequently questioning the Election Commission and EVMs after election losses. This time, he claimed, they attempted to mislead the ECI itself. He emphasized that information on nomination papers is publicly accessible online to ensure transparency.

Finally, Seth urged the ECI to investigate the discrepancy, asking them to determine whether the inconsistency began in 2019 or 2024. “The ECI should take strict action. This is not a simple mistake but a deliberate fraud. The BJP believes in the ECI, the Constitution, and the public, while others do not,” he concluded.

</excerpt>

Union Home Minister Amit Shah criticized the INDI Alliance on Sunday, accusing them of failing to address the needs of Hindu, Buddhist, Sikh, and Jain refugees seeking citizenship in India. Shah made these comments while distributing citizenship certificates under the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) to refugees from Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Afghanistan in Ahmedabad.

Shah asserted, “The CAA is not just about granting citizenship; it is about providing justice and rights to countless people. Due to the appeasement politics of Congress and its allies, refugees did not receive justice from 1947 to 2014. They were persecuted in neighboring countries for their religion and faced injustices in their own land as well. The INDI Alliance’s appeasement politics failed to deliver justice, but PM Modi has rectified this.”

He also remarked on the historical context of the partition of India, saying, “The partition led to riots and suffering for millions of Hindus, Sikhs, Jains, and Buddhists in Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Afghanistan. Congress had promised to grant these refugees Indian citizenship but did not follow through, opting instead to appease their vote bank.”

Shah emphasized that the BJP had committed to implementing the CAA upon coming to power in 2014. He acknowledged delays in granting citizenship due to misinformation but clarified that the CAA does not revoke anyone’s citizenship. “Some state governments are still misleading people. In my state alone, 128 families have received Indian citizenship. When Bangladesh was created, Hindus comprised 27 percent of the population, but now they make up only 9 percent due to religious persecution,” he added.

Earlier in the day, Shah inaugurated and laid the foundation for several development projects in Ahmedabad, including an Oxygen Park and a lake. Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel also attended the event. Shah urged Ahmedabad residents to support a campaign to plant 30 lakh trees in 100 days, emphasizing the importance of addressing environmental issues and combating global warming. He encouraged citizens to plant a tree in honor of their families, following PM Modi’s call for the ‘Ek Ped Maa ke Naam’ initiative.

Today marks a significant day for the 18th Lok Sabha as the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) and the INDI Alliance vie for the Speaker’s post, one of the most important roles in a parliamentary democracy.

The election, which will be held today, pits the NDA’s nominee Om Birla, a former Speaker, against the INDI Alliance’s candidate Kodikunnil Suresh, an eight-term MP from Kerala’s Mavelikara. This election is notable as it is the first contested Speaker election in decades.

How is the Speaker Elected?

The Speaker is chosen from among the members of the lower house of Parliament, as governed by Article 93 of the Constitution. The article states that the House of the People shall elect members to the positions of Speaker and Deputy Speaker as soon as possible and whenever these offices become vacant. The election is conducted through a secret ballot, and the candidate who secures the majority of votes becomes the Speaker.

Historically, most Speakers are elected without opposition. For instance, Sumitra Mahajan and Om Birla were elected as Speakers of the 16th and 17th Lok Sabha without contest.

The Speaker remains in office until the House is dissolved, or they resign or are removed by a resolution passed by a majority of Lok Sabha members.

Why an Election for Speaker Now?

Unlike previous instances where the Speaker was chosen unanimously, this year sees a contest due to the opposition’s increased strength in the House and their insistence on following the convention of appointing a Deputy Speaker from the opposition.

Kodikunnil Suresh has explained that the opposition demands the Deputy Speaker post as their right, a tradition that has not been honored in recent Lok Sabhas. Reports indicate that the opposition has been firm on this issue, urging the government to commit to giving the Deputy Speaker post to the opposition.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh reached out to Congress leader Mallikarjun Kharge for support for Om Birla, but the Congress remains steadfast in their demand for the Deputy Speaker position.

Statements from Key Figures

Rahul Gandhi had earlier stated that the opposition would support the NDA’s candidate for Speaker if the government adhered to the convention of appointing the Deputy Speaker from the opposition. However, BJP’s Piyush Goyal countered, emphasizing that the Speaker and Deputy Speaker should represent the entire House, not specific parties.

Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju expressed disappointment at Congress’s nomination of a candidate, breaking from the tradition of unanimous election. He stressed that the Speaker’s role is to ensure the House’s proper functioning, not to serve any party.

Conversely, Congress’s KC Venugopal highlighted that during the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) regime, the Deputy Speaker post was given to the NDA for 10 years, underscoring the tradition of offering the Deputy Speaker role to the opposition.

Historical Context

This contested election is reminiscent of the last such election in 1976, when Bali Ram Bhagat was elected as Speaker of the Fifth Lok Sabha. Before that, in 1952, GV Mavalankar became Speaker after defeating Shankar Shantaram More.

Pre-Independence, the Central Legislative Assembly saw six elections for the Speaker post between 1925 and 1946. Notable elections include Vitthalbhai J Patel’s victory in 1925 and Sir Muhammad Yakub’s win in 1930.

As the Lok Sabha gears up for today’s election, the outcome will not only determine the new Speaker but also set the tone for parliamentary proceedings and the balance of power between the ruling party and the opposition.

</excerpt>

On Tuesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasized the necessity of creating a developed Bihar and a developed India. He highlighted the importance of establishing a robust government at the center to ensure a bright future for everyone.

Addressing a public meeting in Bihar’s Maharajganj, PM Modi stated “For your bright future, a strong government needs to be formed at the centre. As June 4 is nearing the abuses of the INDI alliance for Modi are increasing…”

“..They (INDIA alliance) cannot tolerate that the people of the country are going to re-elect Modi for the next 5 years…,” PM Modi said, adding, “For your future & the future of your children Viksit Bihar (Developed Bihar) and Viksit Bharat (Developed India] has to be made,” the PM added.

PM Modi accused the INDIA bloc of being an alliance of parties tainted by corruption and nepotism.

“The platform of INDI Alliance is not a political platform, it seems like a conference of scamsters of lakhs and crores. Scamsters of about 20 lakh crore rupees sit together on their platform. When they come together, three evils are clearly visible in them- They are extremely communal. They are extremely casteist and they are staunch nepotists.”

PM Modi remarked that the INDIA bloc showed no respect for Bihar’s dignity “The dignity of Bihar and the respect of Biharis do not matter to the INDI alliance. When the DMK people abused Bihar, when the Congress leader from Telangana abused Bihar, even then Congress’s family kept its lips shut.”

PM Modi conducted his second poll rally within an hour today. Prior to this, he spoke at a public gathering in East Champaran.

“Modi is a thorn in the eyes of these people 24 hours a day, but despite their best efforts, I will remain steadfast in your service,” PM Modi said, targeting Congress and its allies in the state.

“I do not have any inheritance of my own, you are my inheritance and you are also my heir,” PM Modi said in his address.

He emphasised that the Indian people have made the decision to back a robust administration led by the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) at the centre.

“Thank you to everyone who participated in yesterday’s 5th phase of the 2024 elections,” Prime Minister Modi posted on his official social media account, X. The NDA is receiving an increasing amount of support. India’s citizens have made up their minds that they desire a powerful NDA administration at the centre.”

“The people will not believe them if INDI Alliance tries any kind of votebank politics,” he continued. They are hopeless and completely discredited.”

By 11:30 p.m. on Monday, the Election Commission (ECI) reported that 60.09 percent of voters had cast ballots in the fifth round of the Lok Sabha elections, which covered 49 parliamentary constituencies spread across six states and two Union Territories (UTs).

According to ECI data, the voter turnout was as follows: Bihar at 54.85 percent, Jammu and Kashmir at 56.73 percent, Jharkhand at 63.07 percent, Ladakh at 69.62 percent, Maharashtra at 54.29 percent, Odisha at 67.59 percent, Uttar Pradesh at 57.79 percent, and West Bengal at 74.65 percent.

The sixth phase of polling is scheduled for May 25 in 58 parliamentary constituencies (including the rescheduled poll in Anantnag-Rajouri) across 8 States/UTs.

</excerpt>

Samajwadi Party’s Chief Akhilesh Yadav has recently declared, that the Enforcement Directorate and the Central Bureau of Investigation, do not have any need and should now close down.

He further stated that he plans to propose this idea to INDIA’s Bloc. Reports the Indian Express.

While giving an interview to newspaper, Yadav reasoned, “CBI aur ED band hone chahiye (the CBI and ED should be shut) … If you have cheated, there is the Income Tax department to deal with it. Why do you need the CBI? Every state has an anti-corruption department, use it if needed.”

Moreover, he also alleged, that these agencies, are now only being used against opposition parties.

He also added, they are used to make or break the government.

Later, the SP leader also queried about demonetization & said, “why these probe agencies hadn’t investigated “what went wrong during demonetisation….How did people convert their black money into white?”

Earlier, the former UP CM alleged, that the issue of electoral bond has made public aware of BJP’s alleged extortion tactics. Implying, that BJP allegedly engages in extortion by misusing ED and CBI raids.

“The government has made extortion strategies, and now with the electoral bonds it has been proven that no one could have done extortion the way the BJP has done.” said Akhilesh Yadav.

Political Landscape Of UP

Meanwhile, elections in Uttar Pradesh are being held in seven phases, so far, elections of First four phases have been completed. Later, the polling for remaining seats will take place on May 20, May 25, and June 1.

Previously, in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, the BJP secured 62 of the 80 seats in Uttar Pradesh, followed by Mayawati’s BSP with 10 seats. Akhilesh’s SP and the Congress party managed to win 5 and 1 seat respectively in the state.

This time, the competition in UP has become more interesting, as prominent political figures like Smriti Irani (Amethi), former Congress chief Rahul Gandhi (Rae Bareli) and Rajnath Singh (Lucknow) contesting seats in the country’s most populous state.

</excerpt>

Tripura Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha stated that the INDI alliance is on the brink of becoming history, destined for museum displays, as people eagerly anticipate voting for BJP candidates in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.

He emphasized this during an election campaign supporting BJP candidate Biplab Kumar Deb in Banamalipur assembly constituency, noting the absence of violence in the 2023 elections and BJP’s victories in recent by-elections.

Saha highlighted the public’s trust in PM Modi’s vision of inclusive development and criticized the opposition’s CPI-Congress alliance, labeling it an “unholy alliance” due to their shared history of governance marked by violence.

He contrasted BJP’s commitment to development and zero tolerance for corruption with the alleged scandals of the UPA government. The Lok Sabha polls in Tripura are scheduled in two phases, with West Tripura voting on April 19 and East Tripura on April 26, with vote counting on June 4.

The Bharatiya Janata Party-led NDA, bolstered by the return of Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar’s Janata Dal United, is confident pf repeating its sweep in the 2019 general election in the state when it had bagged 39 out of the 40 seats in the state.

On the other hand, the I.N.D.I Alliance is strategising on stopping the NDA electoral machine in the state. With the Rashtriya Janata Dal, Congress, Communist Party of India (Marxist-Leninist) Liberation, Communist Party of India (CPI), and Communist Party of India (Marxist), in the alliance, the seat sharing talks in the state are going to be tough nut to crack.

Senior RJD leaders incudling former Bihar deputy chief minister Tejashwi Yadav and the Congress top brass will meet in Delhi on Monday to discuss the seat sharing formula.

Later in the evening, Bihar CM Nitish Kumar will be in Delhi to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah for the same. The JDU in all probablity will get 16 seats to contest on while the BJP may keep 17 for itself while the remaining seven will be distriburted among the smaller partners.

The final NDA seat sharing formula for Bihar will most probably be announced by Tuesday evening and the the respective parties are expected to release the names of the candidates for Lok Sabha election 2024.

</excerpt>

Prime Minister Narendra Modi criticized the Congress party and other allies of the INDIA bloc during his address in Sangareddy, Telangana. He emphasized that unlike the opposition alliance, which prioritizes “family first,” his focus remains on the nation’s welfare. He highlighted the growing support for the BJP in Telangana, which has fueled his enthusiasm.

PM Modi said, “Today, for the second consecutive day, I am in Telangana. The more enthusiasm I see for BJP among the people of Telangana, the more my faith is increasing. I consider your affection and your love for the development of Telangana. I will return it in double the amount.”

He added on to say, “They (dynastic family) say that they have ideological differences with me. They believe in ‘Family First’, and I believe in ‘Nation First’. For them, their family is everything; for me, my country is everything. They sacrifice the Nation for the welfare of their family; I have sacrificed myself for the welfare of the Nation.” PM Modi asserted that leaders within the INDIA bloc have adopted a new strategy to criticise him, claiming that “Modi has no family”

“Congress and its alliance partners are abusing me and my family. Do you know why they are abusing me? The reason why the mere sight of me makes them restless is because I am unveiling their secrets and scams. I never make personal comments on anyone, I just say that they are ‘Parivarvadi’… When I oppose ‘Parivarvad’ and say ‘Parivarvad’ does not let talent grow and hinders the growth of the country as well as the individuals, they do not reply. They say ‘Modi ka koi pariwar hi nahi hai’,” he added. PM Modi further said that he wants to make India the third largest economy in the world.

PM Modi said, “The leaders of the INDI alliance, deeply engrossed in corruption, nepotism and appeasement, are becoming nervous. When I question their ‘Parivarvad’, they have started saying that Modi has no family.”

He added, “My life is an open book, 140 crore people of the country are my family. Today, crores of daughters, mothers and sisters of the country are Modi’s family. Every poor person in the country is my family. Those who have no one, they also belong to Modi and Modi belongs to them. They say ‘Nene Modi Kutumbam’ (I’m Modi family).”

Furthermore, he said, “The countrymen know and understand me very well, keeping track of my every moment. Sometimes when I work till late night and the news is out, lakhs of people from across the country write to me asking me not to work so much, and take some rest.”

He further listed the development projects completed in time, “Those labelling the development projects as a ‘Chunavi’ tactic must be given an account of the last 15 days.
“In the last 15 days, we inaugurated the world’s largest storage scheme for farmers. 18,000 cooperatives were computerised. Over 2000 railway projects have been inaugurated and laid the foundation stones for,” he detailed.

Adding on to say, “Moreover, it was also during the last 15 days only that projects worth over 1.5 lakh crore for the oil and gas sector have been dedicated to the country. The list doesn’t end here. These 15 days have built the Atmanirbhar Bharat!”
