Virat Kohli Reaches Major Milestone in Perth Test

With 11 matches under his belt during the tournament, Warner amassed 535 runs at a strike rate of 108.29.

During an interview on Ravichandran Ashwin’s official YouTube channel, Warner emphasised how the IPL experience provided invaluable insights into Indian pitches, including the type of soil used and how it influences the game’s dynamics. He stressed the advantage of familiarity with conditions, noting similarities between the Narendra Modi Stadium boundaries in Ahmedabad and those in Australia.

Australia’s triumph, marking their sixth 50-over World Cup victory, stood in contrast to India’s two titles in 1983 and 2011. Recalling the ODI World Cup 2023 final, India struggled to a total of 240 runs in 50 overs. Despite commendable performances from Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and KL Rahul, Mitchell Starc, Pat Cummins, and Josh Hazlewood led Australia’s bowling attack.

In the chase, India had Australia at 47/3 before Travis Head and Marnus Labuschagne’s impactful innings secured a six-wicket victory for Australia. Head’s blistering 137 off 120 balls and Labuschagne’s steady 58 off 110 balls left India unable to mount a comeback. Mitchell Starc, Pat Cummins, and Josh Hazlewood starred with the ball, with support from Adam Zampa and Glenn Maxwell.

</excerpt>

In his first-ever speech during the first ODI play on Sunday, Indian youngster Sai Sudharsan said that the visitors responded well to the game.

In an interview included in a video released by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), Sudharsan described the Johannesburg wicket as difficult and challenging. He went on to say how wonderful his collaboration with Shreyas Iyer was.

He went on to say that his debut against the “Men in Blue” was aided by his success with India A.

“I think we have reacted well to the situation. The wicket was a bit tricky and it was not easy to bat but we had a very good partnership. What was happening on the pitch, it went great. I just tried and collected as much awareness as I could of how the conditions will be in South Africa. I played India A game before coming here, I think it helped me to adjust to the conditions,” Sudharsan said.
The 22-year-old revealed that he reacted well to the ball.
“I had reacted to the ball well. I had a small feeling that it would be nice to start the first ball with a boundary,” he added.

India’s triumph against Australian team in the opening Test in Nagpur has taken them to the top of the ICC’s Test ranking table and made them the NO. 1 ranked team in all 3 formats. Team India recently clinched to the World No. 1 ODI team spot after they defeated New Zealand 3-0 in January, to go with their No. 1 T20I ranking.

Now, the team must win the second Test against Australia in Delhi which is scheduled for FRIDAY, February 17, 2023, to maintained their lead in the Test rankings and reach a step ahead to qualify for the World Test Championship final in June. To qualify for the final, India must win the series 3-1 or 3-0.

The second Test between host nation and Australia for the Border Gavaskar Trophy will take place in Delhi from Friday onwards. Speaking about the third day of the first Test, the host nation merely needed two sessions of play before taking a 1-0 lead in the Border Gavaskar Trophy in Nagpur. After maintaining their leads to over 200 runs, India bowled out guest nation for 91 in about a session to win the Test by innings and 132 runs.

Post Match, Ravindra Jadeja was declared the Player of the Match for bowling figures of 7-81 and 70 runs with the willow. Meanwhile, Ravichandran Ashwin, is returning with the brink to the top spot in the ICC Men’s Test Bowler Rankings. Ashwin ensured India’s victory before tea on the third day as the veteran off-spinner took 5/37 in the second innings to go with 3/42 earlier in the match.

India captain, Rohit Sharma has been rewarded for his match defining ton in Nagpur with a rise from 10th to 8th in the ICC Men’s Test Batting Rankings.

India will need 324 runs more, with all their wickets intact, when they come out to bat on Tuesday to win the fourth and final Test against Australia at The Gabba.

India reached 4/0 in their chase on 328 in the extended final session on Monday before rain started pouring in and umpires were forced to call for early Stumps. Only 1.5 overs could be bowled in India’s second innings on Day Four as Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill remained unbeaten on 4 and 0 respectively.

The weather forecast for the final day isn’t great and Australia will be praying that rain gods stay away so that they can win the Brisbane Test and win the Border-Gavaskar series, a trophy which they lost in India’s last tour of 2018-19. On the other hand, a draw in the game would be sufficient for India to retain the coveted trophy.

The highest successful chase at Gabba ame in 1951, when Australia finished 236/7, but the Tim Paine led-side have fresher memories of how India incredibly salvaged a draw last week in Sydney.

Earlier, India bowled out Australia for 294 in their second innings, after resuming the day on 21/0.

Steve Smith was the top scorer for Australia in their second essay as he scored 55 runs off 74 deliveries, with the help of seven boundaries. David Warner, Marcus Harris and Cameron Green also made notable contributions of 48, 38 and 37. Pat Cummins and skipper Tim Paine also made scores of 28 and 27.

For India, right-arm fast bowler Mohammed Siraj picked up his maiden five-wicket haul, conceding 73 runs in 19.5 overs. Shardul Thakur also picked four wickets for 61 while debutant off-spinner Washington Sundar scalped one.

India had posted 336 in reply to Australia’s first inning score of 369, thus conceding a 33-run lead.

The four-match series is tied at 1-1 with Australia winning the first Test in Adelaide and India winning the second in Melbourne. The third Test in Sydney had ended in a draw.

Brief scores: Australia 369 and 294 (Steve Smith 55, David Warner 48; Mohammed Siraj 5/73) vs India 336 and 4/0 at Stumps on Day Four (Rohit Sharma 4*, Shubman Gill 0*; Mitchell Starc 0/4)

India’s star batsman Rohit Sharma geared up for India’s last two Tests against Australia as he resumed training on Thursday, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) confirmed on its Twitter handle. Rohit, who had been in a 14-day quarantine in Sydney after his arrival from India in mid-December, flew to Melbourne on Wednesday to join the team.

“The Hitman is here and has just got the engine started!” wrote BCCI on Instagram. On Thursday, the BCCI tweeted pictures of the India opener doing catching practice.

“The engine is just getting started and here is a quick glimpse of what lies ahead,” the BCCI wrote on twitter with the pictures.

Rohit’s match fitness will be crucial as he has not played any cricket since the Indian Premier League final on 10 November.

He had stayed back in India to recuperate at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru even though the decision made the regular India skipper Virat Kohli unhappy.

Kohli had said prior to the ODI series that he had not been informed about Rohit’s progress and that he would have loved to have him recuperate in Australia instead of NCA.

Since arrival, the hard quarantine has meant that he has not had a chance of practice. Rohit’s participation in the remaining two Tests, to be held in Sydney and Brisbane, will depend on assessment by the team’s medical staff and management, as stated in a BCCI release shared before Rohit›s departure to Australia. India coach Ravi Shastri too made it clear that Rohit wouldn›t simply walk in to the side.

“We will have a chat with him to see where he is placed physically because he has been quarantined for a couple of weeks. We will have to see now how he feels before we take the call,” Shastri had told media after the second Test which India won.

Rohit last played a Test over a year back, against Bangladesh in Kolkata. That was also India’s first pink-ball Test.

The right-handed batsman had injured his hamstring during the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2020 and although he returned to the field to lead Mumbai to a record fifth IPL title, he didn’t travel with the team to Australia subsequently.

Earlier this month, Rohit was declared clinically fit for the tour by the BCCI and he joined the team in time for the third Test.

The four-match series is level at 1-1 after India won the second Test in Melbourne by eight wickets after losing the first Test in Adelaide by the same margin.

SYDNEY: The Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG) was on Tuesday confirmed as venue for the third Test between India and Australia, starting 7 January, Cricket Australia (CA) said in a statement on Tuesday. The SCG’s eligibility to host the match was in some doubt because of a spike in Covid-19 cases on the northern beaches of Sydney. “We have met regularly over the past week to assess the unfolding public health situation in Sydney and gauge its impact on border restrictions around the country. To date, we have been able to deliver a safe and successful summer, thanks to our detailed biosecurity protocols and the amazing work of so many great people behind the scenes,” CA interim CEO Nick Hockley said in the statement.

NEW DELHI: India’s biggest take away from the second Test apart from the series-equalling win was the ability of debutants Shubman Gill (45 and 32 not out) and Mohammed Siraj (2/40 and 3/37) to step in and perform with self-assurance. Although they didn’t get the big numbers, the two did enough damage to Australia and helped India win.

Before the start of the second Test, India were facing a conundrum at the top of the order. With Rohit Sharma in quarantine after arriving in Australia late due to his rehab at the National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru, and Prithvi Shaw failing in both innings of the first Test, India had to throw in young Gill at the deep end. And though the opener survived some tense moments, he did not budge from playing his shots.

On a tense Saturday evening, the first day of the first Test, 21-year-old Gill survived a chance on four when Marnus Labuschagne dropped him in third slip off the bowling of Pat Cummins. The very next ball from Mitchell Starc was dispatched to the fence as the batsman got on top of the bounce and punched it through cover.

Soon, Gill was moving down the track to Nathan Lyon and hitting a four.

On the second morning, too, he was dropped, in the second over of the day, this time of Josh Hazlewood. But the very next ball was again dispatched to the fence on the leg-side.

Even in the second innings, when India chased a small total, facing the ghosts of 36 in the second innings of the first Test, Gill went about playing his shots even as Mayank Agarwal and Cheteshwar Pujara were dismissed early. The Aussies had no answer.

“I thought he looked very, very mature for someone playing his first Test match. He looked calm and composed and wasn’t afraid to play his shots, which was great to see.

Even in the second innings, where it was very easy to get into a shell, Gill went out there and played his natural game which was great from the team point of view,” said India coach Ravi Shastri.

Pacer Siraj too remained unnerved despite the departure of Umesh Yadav during Australia’s second innings on the third day. He kept a tight line and became the first Indian in seven years to pick five wickets in a Test match when he got Nathan Lyon on the fourth day. Siraj’s other wickets were extremely important—he removed Cameron Green twice, Marnus Labuschagne, and Travis Head once each.

The young fast bowler was also prowling for the ball on the field, trying not to leak runs. By Siraj’s own admission he just kept straight and accurate lines, curtailing the flow of runs and not trying anything fancy. “I focus on the basics consistently. I don’t try much,” said Siraj while crediting domestic cricket and Indian Premier League (IPL) for patience and confidence.

India skipper Ajinkya Rahane on Tuesday too credited domestic cricket and other non-Test first-class experience as the reason behind Siraj’s ability to bowl with discipline. “It’s really difficult for debutants to bowl with discipline but that’s where I think the first-class experience comes in handy. Even India A level, that helps a lot; the way Siraj bowled was magnificent. [In his] first Test match, bowling with the same discipline and patience was very good to see. Credit to both of them [Siraj and Gill] for showing character and attitude,” said Rahane after the match.

Shastri also praised Siraj, saying: “He might not have the numbers to show but the discipline and ability to bowl long spells, maturity he showed for someone playing his first Test match and doing the job he had to do once we lost Umesh was outstanding.”

Shastri credited IPL for the ability of Indian youngsters like Gill and Siraj to step onto the field without even a hint of nerve. “I think a lot has to do with the IPL. The fact that they share the dressing room with international players, they rub shoulders with the best. That complex factor disappears very quickly. You see what you see now,” said Shastri, when asked about the maturity the youngsters have shown.

MELBOURNE: India defeated Australia by eight wickets in the second Test at the Melbourne Cricket Cricket Ground on Tuesday. The four-Test series is now level at 1-1. Australia had won the first Test in Adelaide, also by eight wickets.

(ANI Photo)

Set a target of 70 after Australia were dismissed for 200 in their second innings on Tuesday, the Indians got to the target for the loss of opener Mayank Agarwal (5) and No. 3 Cheteshwar Pujara (3).

Shubman Gill, who hit seven fours in a delightful innings, was unbeaten on 35 and skipper Ajinkya Rahane on 27.

Earlier, the Aussies, who resumed on 133 for six, added 67 more runs before getting bowled out at the stroke of lunch in the extended first session.

Mohammed Siraj picked two of the four wickets to fall on the day to take his innings tally to three for 37 while Jasprit Bumrah (2/54) and R Ashwin (2/71) picked a wicket each on the fourth day.

Cameron Green (45) and Pat Cummins added 23 more and took their seventh-wicket partnership to 57 in the morning before Cummins was dismissed by a short delivery from Bumrah as the seventh wicket.

Green was out to a pull shot off Siraj while Lyon fell to the same bowler caught behind down the leg-side.

All the three Aussie wickets to India pace bowlers were off short deliveries on a wicket that afforded no help to either the pace bowlers or spinners. R. Ashwin took the last wicket of Josh Hazlewood.

Brief scores: Australia 195 and 200 (C. Green 45, M. Wade 40, M. Labuschagne 28, M. Siraj 3/37, J. Bumrah 2/54, R. Jadeja 2/28, R. Ashwin 2/71, U. Yadav 1/5) vs India 326 and 70/2 (S. Gill 35 not out, A. Rahane 27 not out)

Even in the second innings, when India chased a small total, facing the ghosts of 36 in the second innings of the first Test, Gill went about playing his shots even as Mayank and Pujara were dismissed.

MELBOURNE: India skipper Ajinkya Rahane played a captain’s knock to score his 12th Test century and help India take control of the second Test against Australia at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. India ended the second day’s play, comfortably placed at 277/5, and 82 runs ahead of the hosts Aussies who were bowled out for 195 in the first innings on Saturday.

Ajinkya Rahane celebrates his century during the second Test match between India and Australia at Melbourne Cricket Ground on Sunday. (ANI Photo)

Rahane was unbeaten on 104 while all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja was with him at the crease on 40, the two having added an unbeaten 104 for the sixth wicket.

The India stand-in skipper shared half-century partnerships with Hanuma Vihari and Rishabh Pant to rescue India after they were reduced to 64 for three in the first session.

Resuming day two from 36/1, Gill and Pujara weathered the storm during the first hour of the play. However, their 61-run partnership was ended by Cummins as Gill (45) fell short of his maiden Test half-century. Cummins made sure Australia didn’t lose any momentum as he sent back Pujara (17) in his next over. Skipper Tim Paine took a superb one-handed catch to leave India at 64/3.

Rahane and Vihari rebuilt the Indian innings after the double strike by Cummins. The duo ensured that the hosts did not lose any more wickets before the end of the first session. Both batters then started the second session after weathering the storm before lunch. The duo had steadied India’s ship before Nathan Lyon sent Vihari (21) back when the batsman tried to sweep.

Rishabh Pant then joined Rahane at the crease and the duo dominated the Australian bowlers in the second session. Pant scored runs at a strike rate of 72.50 while Rahane welcomed Cummins with a boundary in his fresh spell. However, Mitchell Starc ended Pant’s (29) innings in the 60th over of the innings.

At the tea break, India’s score read 189/5 with Ravindra Jadeja and Rahane at the crease. After the break, both Jadeja and Rahane looked reasonably comfortable at the crease and the duo ensured that the visitors also take the lead in the first innings.

The final session of the day saw Rahane bringing up his 12th century and he along with Jadeja ensured that the side does not lose any wickets in the final session of day two. In the final 2.5 hours of day two, India managed to score 88 runs, and the visitors extended their lead to 82 over hosts Australia. Rahane’s catch was dropped by Steve Smith and Travis Head off the bowling of Starc and Australia had to pay for the two misses dearly.

On day one, India had bundled out Australia for 195 as Jasprit Bumrah scalped four wickets while Ravichandran Ashwin took three wickets.

Brief Scores: Australia 195 vs India 277/5 (Ajinkya Rahane 104*, Ravindra Jadeja 40*; Mitchell Starc 2-60).

Resuming day two from 36/1, Gill and Pujara weathered the storm during the first hour of the play. However, their 61-run partnership was ended by Cummins as Gill (45) fell short of his maiden Test half-century.

Dubai: Despite the defeat in the first Test, India skipper Virat Kohli managed to fractionally close the gap on Australia’s Steve Smith at the top of the ICC Men’s Test Batting Rankings from 25 points to 13 points.

Kohli’s first innings of 74 enabled him to gain two points, whereas Smith’s 1 & 1* lost him 10 points in the table. In the latest rankings announced by the ICC on Sunday, Smith has 901 points while Kohli has 888. With the ball, Pat Cummins took seven wickets in the match to gain six points and move from 904 to 910, which is a comfortable lead over Stuart Broad (845) in second place. Australian pacer, Josh Hazelwood’s astonishing figures of 5/8 in India’s second innings helped him gain four spots and move back into the top five with 805 points, the first time since March 2018.

With four wickets in Australia’s first innings, India’s R. Ashwin has overtaken Jasprit Bumrah as India’s top-ranked bowler, currently in ninth place.
