PTI plans to launch a protest led by Khan from jail. His wife Bushra Bibi is also jailed. Government calls for dialogue remain unanswered.
</excerpt>

Imran Khan, former Prime Minister of Pakistan and the founder of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), is expected to be released on bail on June 11 in the Al-Qadir Trust case. The Islamabad High Court (IHC) would hear the petitions for suspending the sentences of Khan and his wife Bushra Bibi in the £190 million case.

Khan, 72, is currently behind bars in Adiala Jail since August 2023 on various cases, including convictions. PTI chief Gohar Ali Khan was optimistic about the development. “June 11 is going to be a significant day for both Imran Khan and his wife,” he mentioned, without making any further comments.

Court Postponed Hearing

Previously, the IHC rescheduled the hearing to June 11 after the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) requested extra time to formulate its case, ARY News reported.

Bushra Bibi, who remains in custody, is purportedly being held ‘without any charges’ in an attempt to intimidate Khan. Gohar explained, “No deals will be made for the founder’s release,” and dispelled speculation of power struggles within PTI.

PTI is gearing up to initiate a political movement in coordination with opposition parties. Khan will be leading the movement from jail, the party will address on June 9, Gohar said, adding that a plan for the upcoming budget has already been prepared.

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur also warned of a mass protest for Khan’s release after Eid al-Adha. Khan himself declared he would organize the protest against the ruling Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) from behind bars. He claims the February 8 general elections witnessed the ‘Mother of All Rigging’ and dubbed the PML-N and Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) as ‘mandate thieves’.

Shehbaz Govt Asked for Dialogue

In the meantime, Rana Sanaullah, Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Political Affairs, asked PTI to answer Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s call for dialogue and sit with the government for the betterment of the country to amend election laws. “They must sit with the government for the welfare of the country,” he stated while addressing Faisalabad.

Details of the Al-Qadir Trust Case

The row arose over a £190 million settlement of the UK’s National Crime Agency (NCA) and Malik Riaz’s family. In 2019, the NCA froze eight UK bank accounts worth £100 million, which were believed to be “derived from bribery and corruption in a foreign country.

The NCA had reported to Khan’s administration, which reportedly instructed Shehzad Akbar, then his accountability aide, to resolve the case. The resolution supposedly permitted Bahria Town’s liabilities to be reconciled against the frozen money intended to go to Pakistan’s treasury.

Bahria Town Ltd, a real estate firm owned by Malik Riaz, was found to have illegally acquired land in Karachi’s Malir district. The company donated hundreds of acres to the Al-Qadir Trust, a non-profit organization co-founded by Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi, who serve as its only trustees.

</excerpt>

Actor Imran Khan recently opened up about the harsh criticism that followed Delhi Belly’s initial private screening and how Aamir Khan stood by the movie in the face of it. In an interview, Imran revealed that the first cut was seen at Aamir Khan’s office by a small group of people, including himself, writer Akshat Verma, director Abhinay Deo, and members of Aamir’s inner circle.

One of Aamir’s close family friends had a strong reaction after the screening, allegedly saying, “Aamir, what have you done? What did you create? The same individual said, “Tu iska career barbaad kar dega” (You’ll ruin his career) while pointing to Imran.

“Your Name Will Be Destroyed”

Things got more intense when even Aamir’s security guard chimed in with criticism. “Sir, aaj tak aapne jo bhi naam kamaya hai, mitti mein mil jayega sab. Agar aap iss picture ko release karenge, aapka naam mitti mein mil jayega,” Imran quoted him saying.

According to Imran, the room was filled with negativity, with people describing the movie as “offensive, obscene, ugly, disgusting.” The general advice was: “Burn the negative. Don’t let anybody find out that you have made this film.”

Aamir Khan Did Not Flinch

Imran Khan admitted that both he and writer Akshat Verma were shaken. “We actually fell ill for two days,” he said. Despite the harsh feedback, Aamir remained calm. “He didn’t flinch,” Imran said. “He told us, ‘No, it is correct. You guys have shot the right film… the problem is only the edit.” The team went back, re-edited the film, and eventually released it.

Delhi Belly later gained cult status and is remembered for its bold humour and style. It eventually garnered praise for its talented cast, and Aamir Khan was also lauded for showing urban realism and for producing a film which was gritty, grimy, and unglamorous, a sharp contrast to glossy, larger-than-life aesthetics typical of mainstream Bollywood.

Aamir Khan is also widely respected for being brave enough to stick by this film, which he knew would receive backlash from mainstream audiences. It is one of the many reasons why his love for the craft of film can never be doubted.

Pakistan Government Debunks Viral Death Rumours

<excerpt>Govt rejects fake death news of Imran Khan; PTI urges release amid health risks and rising Indo-Pak tensions.
</excerpt>

Pakistan’s Ministry of Information and Broadcasting on Saturday called out as “fake” an online circulating press release that falsely asserted imprisoned former Prime Minister Imran Khan had passed away in jail. The ministry called on people to “refuse irresponsible actions” and avoid falling for fake news.

The falsified statement, which was made in the name of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, falsely stated that Khan had died in judicial custody and an investigation into the incident had been initiated. It further stated that Pakistan would maintain “complete transparency” and have UN agencies participate in the inquiry—a statement now proven to be false.

Khan Faces Immediate Threats to Life

As a response to increasing concerns, Imran Khan‘s party, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), has gone to the Islamabad High Court to seek his release. KP Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur submitted the plea, mentioning a threat of a drone strike at Adiala Jail and Khan’s declining health due to extended detention.

The Islamabad High Court has been moved for the release of Imran Khan. in light of the prevailing war scenario with India. and for fear of a drone attack on Adiala Jail,” said the party.

The chief minister also maintained that Khan’s extended detention contravenes his fundamental rights and asked the court to take resort under constitutional provisions for parole.

They allege a deliberate attempt to sabotage Khan’s legal defence.
</excerpt>

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leaders and the sisters of former prime minister Imran Khan have filed contempt petitions against Adiala jail authorities, accusing them of defying court orders by repeatedly denying access for scheduled visits to the PTI founder, Dawn reported

Appearing before the Islamabad High Court (IHC) on Friday, Aleema Khan and Uzma Khan, along with PTI leaders Omar Ayub, Shibli Faraz, Aliya Hamza and others, called for action against what they described as the jail administration’s consistent refusal to allow court-ordered meetings.

Aleema Khan, represented by Advocate Ali Bukhari, submitted a contempt petition naming the Punjab home secretary and the Adiala jail superintendent as respondents. The petition described the denial of access to Khan as a “blatant violation of court orders.”

It also pointed out that the IHC had previously allowed Imran Khan to meet his family, lawyers, and party representatives twice a week–on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
The petition further noted that a complete list of approved visitors, including legal counsel and family members, had been submitted in compliance with the court’s directive. However, it alleged that even scheduled visits were blocked by jail authorities.

It argued that access to legal representation and family is a fundamental right, particularly for a former prime minister facing multiple legal proceedings. The petition added that the jail administration’s conduct amounted to a breach of both the court order and the jail manual.

Omar Ayub and Shibli Faraz had previously filed a similar contempt petition, which is still pending scheduling for a hearing by the court.

Speaking to the media outside the IHC, Aleema Khan condemned the jail authorities for preventing legal counsel from meeting Khan. She stated, “The court has clearly issued an order for a list of lawyers [to meet Khan]. Why are they being stopped?”

She expressed concern that the interference was aimed at “sabotage” of the PTI founder’s legal defence and accused authorities of “deliberate interference” in the judicial process, reported Dawn.

Aleema Khan noted that legal consultations must take priority over other visits. “We will stand outside Adiala jail and insist that no one else meets him until his lawyers are allowed to,” she said.

Referring to a recent visit by senior lawyer Salman Safdar, she said he had gone to Adiala jail under directions from the Supreme Court, but the jail staff “ignored the chief justice’s orders.” She added, “It’s not just our insult, it’s the court’s insult.”

Aleema reminded reporters that a three-member bench had directed that legal meetings be permitted, but those orders were not being implemented.

Omar Ayub also addressed the media, stating that despite the court’s ruling, PTI leaders had not been able to meet Khan for the past three months. “Laws are not being implemented,” he said, referring to Article 7 of the Constitution. He accused the state of acting outside the legal framework and failing to uphold constitutional rights.

He further claimed that when he attempted to reach Adiala jail, he was stopped at several checkpoints. In an attempt to avoid detection, he said he disguised himself and travelled by motorcycle, Dawn reported.

Despite this, he claimed he was arrested without a warrant, even though he was on bail. Ayub alleged that he and other PTI leaders were taken to Chakri, roughly 40 kilometres from Adiala jail, in a van where they were given refreshments before being dropped near their vehicles on the motorway. He termed the incident “bizarre and unlawful.”

He claimed the charges are baseless and aimed at sidelining him from the political landscape ahead of key elections.
</excerpt>

Pakistan’s former Prime Minister Imran Khan told the Lahore High Court (LHC) that his nomination in the rioting cases is part of a political vendetta as he was in the custody of the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) on May 9, 2023, when violent protests erupted in Pakistan, The Express Tribune reported.

On Monday, a division bench of the LHC, which includes Justice Syed Shahbaz Ali Rizvi and Justice Tariq Saleem Sheikh, resumed hearing Imran Khan’s bail applications in eight May 9 cases, including the Corps Commander House attack case.

During the hearing, PTI founder Imran Khan’s lawyer, Salman Safdar, told the bench that he had presented his argument at the last hearing of the case. In his petition, Imran Khan has said that he was falsely accused and that he and other PTI leaders planned a conspiracy before May 9, 2023, to attack state institutions in case he was arrested, The Express Tribune reported.

He requested the court to approve his bail in all May 9 cases and ordered his release. The bench will resume hearing the case on April 17. Earlier in November last year, an anti-terrorism court dismissed all bail applications of Imran Khan.

Meanwhile, an Anti-Terrorism Court in Islamabad on Monday reserved its judgment on bail applications of 86 PTI members who were booked in vandalism cases following the protest held by PTI on November 26.

Judge Abual Hasnat Muhammad Zulqarnain presided over the hearing on the bail petitions filed by PTI workers, who were represented in court by Advocate Sardar Muhammad Masroof, Advocate Amna Ali, Zahid Bashir Dar, Ansar Kayani, Murtaza Turi, and Fatehullah Burki.

Advocate Kayani said that none of the accused were originally nominated in the case. However, they were later identified through an identification parade, which was carried out five months following the incident.

He mentioned that the identification procedure was carried out entirely in English, the report said. He asked, “Could the police officials speak English? Could the accused understand English?”

He said that PTI workers, following their release in Rawalpindi after five- to six-month detention, are implicated in cases in Islamabad, The Express Tribune reported. Kayani said that the statements given by the accused in police custody have no legal weight, and there is no specific role attributed to any accused, no recoveries and no evidence.

Kayani requested the court to approve bail, noting that the court had already granted bail to some accused in related cases. Advocate Sardar Muhammad Masroof Khan stated that none of the accused was arrested on the spot by police; all were taken from their residences. The defence lawyer said that the bails issued previously by the court were upheld by the Islamabad High Court.

Violent clashes erupted in Pakistan after Imran Khan was arrested on May 9, 2023. The protests were held in remote and major cities as PTI workers were angry over the arrest of the party founder, with Balochistan, Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and Islamabad summoning the armed forces to ensure law and order. Army installations, including the Corps Commander’s house in Lahore, were attacked during the protests held by PTI workers.

Protests Erupt in Pakistan as PTI Opposes Judges’ Appointment, New Law

<excerpt>Lawyers in Islamabad staged protests against the elevation of six judges to the Supreme Court, demanding a postponement of the Judicial Commission’s meeting.
</excerpt>

Hundreds of lawyers rallied in Islamabad on Monday to protest the decision of Judicial Commission of Pakistan to elevate six high court judges to the Supreme Court. Protests flared as lawyers demanded an adjournment of the JCP meeting, which went ahead despite the opinion of four Supreme Court judges and legal groups.

Protests erupted at several points in the capital, with the lawyers’ committee holding a protest near D-Chowk. The protests became violent when security forces clashed with the protesters while trying to enter the key areas. The police retaliated by blocking several major roads that led to the Red Zone, causing traffic congestion all over the city. Metro bus services were suspended at various points, causing more dislocation to the daily commuters.

Protesters also staged a significant number of demonstrations at Serena Chowk, protesting the postponement of the JCP meeting. Former Prime Minister Imran Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf party strongly opposed the appointments and joined the protests.

Controversial Appointments and Legal Challenges

The Judicial Commission is set to fill eight vacant Supreme Court seats under the controversial 26th Constitutional Amendment, which includes four members from Parliament. The newly appointed judges are Justice Muhammad Hashim Khan Kakar, Justice Muhammad Shafi Siddiqui, Justice Salahuddin Panhwar, Justice Shakeel Ahmad, Justice Aamer Farooq, and Justice Ishtiaq Ibrahim. However, the Chief Justice of the Lahore High Court was not included in the list, raising further concerns among the legal community.

PTI Senator Hamid Khan termed these appointments “unconstitutional” and “illegitimate.” Talking to Geo News, he said that his party would never accept the appointments. He made this statement after earlier protests, including a strike by lawyers in Islamabad on February 3 against the transfer of three high court judges to the Islamabad High Court (IHC), whereas the Karachi Bar Association supported the strike and stayed out of court.

Day-to-Day Impact of Islamabad Demonstrations

The protest demonstrations profoundly disrupted the city’s transportation system of Islamabad. Blocking roads to the Red Zone and suspending the metro bus resulted in severe traffic jam across the city, which further escalated tensions around the protest rallies.

Legal fraternity opposition to appointments and ongoing demonstrations indicate a rise in the increasing dissatisfaction within Pakistan’s legal community towards decisions taken by the JCP recently.

PCB Clears Air on Imran Khan’s Name Removal from Lahore Stadium Enclosure

<excerpt> PCB clarifies that no names have been changed or removed from Gaddafi Stadium’s enclosures.
</excerpt>

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has dismissed rumors suggesting that the name of former cricketer and ex-Prime Minister Imran Khan would be removed from one of the enclosures at the recently renovated Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore. This follows speculations that his name was being taken down due to his imprisonment on corruption charges.

In response to these rumors, a PCB official clarified, “No names have been changed or removed on enclosures,” reaffirming that the names of all stadium enclosures, including the one associated with Khan, will remain unchanged. The official also emphasized that the enclosure names will stay as they have always been.

Imran Khan’s name has been a permanent fixture at Gaddafi Stadium since 1992, with the “Imran Khan enclosure” being one of the VIP stands at the stadium. This controversy emerged amid the ongoing renovations at the stadium in preparation for the 2025 Champions Trophy, which is scheduled to begin on February 19.

Khan, who captained Pakistan to victory in the 1992 World Cup, has vehemently denied allegations of corruption. He has repeatedly claimed that the charges against him are politically motivated and part of a broader vendetta. Despite these denials, a recent court ruling found both Imran Khan and his wife Bushra Bibi guilty of corruption and sentenced them to prison. Khan was sentenced to 14 years, while Bushra Bibi received a 7-year sentence. Currently, Khan remains incarcerated in Attock Jail in Punjab.

The case alleged misuse of funds and valuable land donations linked to the trust.
</excerpt>

Pakistan’s former Prime Minister Imran Khan has received a 14-year prison term in a significant high-profile graft case. The court found him guilty in a major graft case involving corruption claims surrounding the Al-Qadir Trust, a controversy that sparked national debate. The case further complicates the future of Imran Khan, a leader who once symbolized change and accountability.

What Is the Al-Qadir Trust?

The Al-Qadir Trust is a welfare organization established by Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi in 2018. The trust operates a university near Islamabad, focusing on spirituality and Islamic teachings. This vision was inspired by Bushra Bibi, who is known for providing spiritual guidance. When he was Prime Minister, Khan also promoted the trust at official events.

Allegations Against the Trust

Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah accused the trust of being a conduit for Khan to receive bribes in the form of valuable land donations from real estate tycoon Malik Riaz Hussain. The trust reportedly received 60 acres of prime land in Punjab’s Jhelum district, valued at 7 billion Pakistani rupees ($24.7 million), and another parcel near Khan’s Islamabad residence.

Sanaullah contended that the university land site remains unutilized, raising suspicions over the misuse of funds. Even the anti-corruption agency summoned Hussain regarding the land donations, but no concrete evidence of misappropriation of funds surfaced.

Acquittal Brings Relief

The court has acquitted Khan and his wife of all charges, which is a great relief for the beleaguered leader. Khan, who described Bushra Bibi as his spiritual guide, reiterated his commitment to transparency and spiritual values. The verdict of the court has marked a pivotal moment in the political future of Khan as Pakistan’s political landscape remains turbulent.

The third round of discussions is scheduled for this week. PTI emphasizes that negotiations should focus on the people’s interests, not a deal.
</excerpt>

The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has called for the Shehbaz Sharif government to allow unrestricted and unfettered access to the imprisoned former Prime Minister Imran Khan. PTI claims that any meetings with the government about easing political tensions must be preceded by such meetings with Khan. According to *The Dawn*, PTI’s demand is one of the main conditions for moving forward with negotiations.

The government and PTI have so far conducted two rounds of negotiations, with a third round likely this week. The objective of these talks is to end the political rifts and bring stability to the situation in the country. PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan maintained that the third round would not occur unless Imran Khan was granted a meeting with PTI leaders without being under surveillance.

He explained at a press conference in Islamabad that the party was not negotiating for a deal but for the people’s interests. He insisted that the draft of the negotiation should be finalized without delay. Oppn leader in National Assembly, Omar Ayub Khan reiterated this claim as he added that the government demanded only an open, intelligence-agencies-free meeting between him and Imran Khan at the time of their last visit. The opposition leader lashed at Adiala Jail for conditions considered unfit to carry out any free-minded dialogue.

Khan further added, “The commitment of the government to negotiations will be clear if they allow us to meet Imran in an unrestricted setting, as we need to get our instructions from him.”

As a reaction to the disturbance in the country, Imran Khan formed a five-member committee to start dialogue with any party, marking a change in the PTI’s parliamentary strategy. In return, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif also constituted a committee consisting of members from the ruling coalition.

The two sides met on December 23 and again on January 2. So far, however, nothing much has come out of the talks because PTI continues to demand meetings with Khan so often that all its demands be finalised. A third round of talks is expected later this week.

The relation of PTI with the government and the establishment has been getting worse since Imran Khan was imprisoned last year on various charges, which often turns violent as a result of state repression during protests.

He criticizes violations of rights, calling for transparent investigations into political unrest and military interference.
</excerpt>

Imran Khan, the former prime minister of Pakistan, who has been in detention since May 2023, revealed that he was offered the chance of a three-year exile, which he decisively rejected. In the post on social media platform X, Khan said, “I was given the opportunity of three-year exile while I was in Attock Jail, but I will live and die in Pakistan.” He also added that his residence in Bani Gala, Islamabad, was offered to him where he refused that offer as well. Khan stated that he was more concerned about the release of his detained party workers and leaders than his personal situation. His party, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), has been under intense political turmoil since Khan’s arrest on charges related to corruption involving land bribes. Furthermore, Khan is also facing anti-terrorism charges for incidents that occurred after his May 2023 arrest, when his supporters staged violent protests.

Khan condemned the “authoritarian era” in Pakistan, arguing that the country had witnessed a degradation of personal freedoms and violation of legal rights. He used the example of former Gilgit-Baltistan Chief Minister Khalid Khurshid, who was sentenced to 34 years in prison, to show how the rule of law has broken down. Khan further argued that Pakistan is now under an “undeclared dictatorship.

The former prime minister also reacted to reports of possible intervention by the incoming US administration, led by Donald Trump, for his release. Khan expressed hope that Trump would remain neutral, unlike President Joe Biden, who Khan claims, influenced his ousting through a no-confidence vote.

During negotiations, Khan repeated that his demands include the formation of a judicial commission to investigate the incidents of November 26, 2024, and May 9, 2023, and the release of political prisoners. He has set January 31 as the deadline for the government to respond to his demands, stating that his campaign to boycott remittances will continue unless meaningful progress is made.

The second round of talks between the PTI and the government ended with an agreement to carry on dialogue in the next week.

</excerpt>

As negotiations between the treasury and opposition began to address political disputes, Senator Irfan Siddiqui, a member of the government’s committee, announced on Monday that they had agreed to the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf’s (PTI) demand to consult Imran Khan, the party’s incarcerated founder, according to a Geo News report.

The PTI and government initiated the negotiation process at the Parliament House in Islamabad, expressing “hopes of a positive outcome” aimed at easing the country’s political tensions.

Speaking on a Geo News programme, Siddiqui stated, “People want peace and democratic norms rather than anarchy and economic instability in the country.”

Regarding the deferment of the verdict in the £190 million Al-Qadir Trust case against Imran Khan and his wife, Siddiqui clarified that the government was not involved in judicial matters.
“The government has nothing to do with the judicial matters, ruling out any connection with the ongoing negotiation process,” he asserted.

Siddiqui further added that the next round of talks, mutually agreed upon by both committees, is scheduled for January 2. He noted that both sides had agreed to maintain confidentiality during discussions and to avoid public statements that could disrupt the negotiation process.

“We want a logical conclusion of the talks. We told them [PTI] to present their demand in the shape of a charter of demand,” Siddiqui explained.

He refrained from making any promises about the outcome of the talks at this stage, stating that the government would consider PTI’s demands once they were presented in writing. “The government committee, comprising senior members who know the constitutional and legal matters, will mull over options after receiving the former ruling party’s demands,” he added.

Senator Raja Nasir Abbas, chief of the Majlis Wahdat-e-Muslimeen (MWM), also shared his perspective on the negotiations. Speaking on the same programme, Abbas expressed optimism about the ongoing dialogue, stating, “I have witnessed many positive things during the meeting summoned by the incumbent government.”

He lauded the formation of the PTI negotiation committee while criticising the government for delaying the creation of its own dialogue committee. Abbas emphasized the importance of arranging a meeting between Imran Khan and the PTI negotiation team to ensure positive progress.
“It is necessary to arrange a meeting between the PTI committee and Imran which would exhibit a positive approach by the government,” he stressed.

Abbas urged the government to seize the opportunity provided by the talks to address Pakistan’s political disputes effectively.

The meeting included key participants such as Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar, PM’s Adviser Rana Sanaullah, and Senator Irfan Siddiqui on behalf of the government. The opposition’s representation included former National Assembly Speaker Asad Qaiser, Sunni Ittehad Council Chairman Sahibzada Hamid Raza, and MWM’s Raja Nasir Abbas. PTI’s committee consisted of other high-ranking members, though some were unable to attend, as reported by Geo News.

Following the initial round of discussions, PTI committed to submitting its demands in writing to the government committee.

Pakistani security forces launched a nighttime operation on Tuesday, arresting numerous protesters from former Prime Minister Imran Khan’s party, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI). These protesters were staging a sit-in in Islamabad, demanding Khan’s release. The operation followed violent clashes two days earlier that left six people dead.

Escalation of Protests

Thousands of Khan’s supporters defied curfew orders and government warnings, breaching barriers in Islamabad’s high-security zone. This led to intense clashes with security forces involving tear gas, gunfire, and mass arrests.

The unrest began on Sunday when Khan’s followers initiated a ‘long march’ from the northwest to Islamabad, calling for his release. Tensions have continued to escalate since then.

Imran Khan’s Legal Battles

Imran Khan has been in prison for over a year and faces more than 150 criminal charges. His party has repeatedly claimed that these charges are politically motivated.

Leadership and Arrests

The protest was initially led by Khan’s wife, Bushra Bibi. However, she fled the scene as police intensified their crackdown. Authorities are also seeking to arrest her. Hundreds of PTI supporters have been detained during the ongoing operation, and key party leaders have reportedly fled the protest site.

Security Forces Take Control

Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi announced that Islamabad’s red zone, home to government buildings and embassies, had been cleared of protesters. Earlier on Tuesday, the army had secured D-Chowk, a prominent area within the red zone, where Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko was staying during an official visit.

Despite the government’s actions, new waves of PTI supporters entered the red zone by Tuesday afternoon, waving party flags in solidarity with Khan.

Fatalities and Violence

Authorities are struggling to contain the violence linked to these protests. Six people, including four security personnel, were killed overnight when a vehicle rammed into them. Additionally, a police officer lost his life in a separate incident.

Government’s Stance

The government insists that only the courts can decide on Khan’s release. They also criticized PTI for rejecting an offer to hold the rally on the outskirts of Islamabad instead of in the city center.

To manage the unrest, police have detained over 4,000 of Khan’s supporters since Friday. Mobile and internet services have been suspended in several regions, and messaging platforms in Islamabad remain severely disrupted.

The situation remains tense as security forces and protesters continue to face off in the capital.

</excerpt>

Former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan has rallied his supporters to intensify peaceful protests in Islamabad. From his prison cell in Adiala Jail, he urged his party, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), to “fight till the last ball and not retreat.”

Clashes Turn Deadly

The protests erupted into violent clashes between PTI workers and security forces, resulting in casualties and injuries. Khan accused Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi of ordering the attacks and vowed accountability for the violence.

Demands for Justice

Khan’s PTI party is demanding his release, free and fair elections, and the rollback of a controversial constitutional amendment they claim empowers a dictatorial regime. The protests also condemn alleged rigging in the February elections and unjust arrests of political activists.

Message to Global Supporters

Khan thanked Pakistanis abroad for their solidarity through funds, protests, and social media campaigns, urging them to amplify PTI’s demands and expose injustices.

Sharif Government Under Fire

The government of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif faces criticism for its heavy-handed measures to suppress PTI rallies. Observers note a growing backlash against the military’s perceived influence over politics.

Khan remains a polarizing figure, and his calls for defiance continue to escalate tensions in Pakistan’s political landscape.

Protests Reach Islamabad

Protesters stormed Islamabad late Monday, defying government efforts to contain the demonstrations. Supporters of Khan removed roadblocks set up to stop them, especially from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province. Security forces responded with tear gas, but the crowds persisted.

Casualties Among Police and Protesters

The protests turned deadly. Officials confirmed the death of a police officer and injuries to more than 119 others. Two officers remain in critical condition. Protesters set vehicles on fire in parts of the capital. Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi said, “Those who gave the call for the protest and seconded it are responsible for policemen casualties.”

Tightened Security Measures

To control the unrest, Islamabad authorities closed schools and suspended mobile services in some areas. They also banned gatherings of more than five people. Security forces secured the Red Zone, which houses government buildings, embassies, and officials’ residences.

Imran Khan’s Legal Battles

Imran Khan, detained for over a year, faces over 150 charges, including corruption and inciting violence. Courts have granted him bail in some cases, but he remains in custody. His party, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), demands his release and the reversal of a law they claim allows government interference in judicial affairs.

Economic Toll of Protests

The protests are hurting Pakistan’s fragile economy. Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb estimated daily losses at 144 billion rupees ($518 million). Meanwhile, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s government struggles to stabilize the economy under a strict International Monetary Fund (IMF) program.

Divided Reactions to the Unrest

Khan’s spokesman, Zulfi Bukhari, reported one protester dead and 20 injured. The government has not confirmed this but blames Khan’s supporters for the violence. Naqvi vowed to arrest anyone trying to enter restricted areas in Islamabad.

The ongoing protests add to Pakistan’s political and economic challenges. The situation remains volatile as tensions between the government and Khan’s supporters intensify.

Supporters of Imran Khan, founder of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), rallied worldwide, showing strong support for their leader. Protests erupted not only in Pakistan but also in various countries. In Mississauga, Canada, PTI supporters gathered to back Khan’s #FinalCall. This demonstration was part of a global movement, with over 60 locations joining protests against Pakistan’s “authoritarian regime.”

Protests Spread Across the Globe

PTI shared updates on social media, saying, “Diaspora in Mississauga, Canada also came out to show solidarity with Imran Khan’s #FinalCall! Over 60 locations around the globe witnessed simultaneous protests.” Another post highlighted protests in Canada’s four cities, demanding the immediate release of Khan and other political prisoners.

In Chicago, Pakistani students joined a protest and car rally, showing support for Khan. PTI emphasized that people from all generations, both in Pakistan and abroad, were united in their demand for his release.

Imran Khan Inspires Nationwide Mobilization

Despite being in prison, Imran Khan continues to inspire his supporters worldwide. PTI posted, “The captain, the leader, the philanthropist, the educationist, the mentor, the idol, and the legend… His name is Imran Khan Niazi and he has won.” The party praised his ability to unite people and challenge the regime, even while confined.

March Toward Islamabad Faces Resistance

In Pakistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur led a convoy toward Islamabad. PTI wrote, “As early as the morning, Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur started advancing with the convoy, destination only Islamabad.” As the convoy made its way from Swabi to Islamabad, police fired tear gas near key checkpoints like Attock Bridge and Chach Interchange to block the protesters.

Despite the resistance, Gandapur remained determined. He said, “We must advance and not turn back until Imran Khan is released.” He urged supporters to prepare for more resistance as they continued their march.

Frustration Over Delays

The convoy faced delays, leading to frustration among PTI supporters. Bushra Bibi, Imran Khan’s wife, urged them to move faster. She said, “Time is being wasted. Stay in your vehicles so we can reach there quickly. We are here to bring Khan back. Let’s move without delay.”

Government Prepares for the Protest

The Pakistani government took measures to prevent the PTI protest. The Interior Ministry warned that no protests would be allowed in Islamabad, threatening legal action against violators. Despite these threats, PTI leaders remained firm in their plans.

Several PTI leaders, including Aamir Dogar and Zain Qureshi, were arrested by Punjab Police. PTI vowed to continue their journey to Islamabad, with Gandapur declaring, “We will bring our private machinery to remove obstacles and reach Islamabad.”

Heavy Security in Islamabad

The government fortified Islamabad in anticipation of the protest. Roads were sealed, and barriers were placed around the city. Security forces, including Rangers and the Frontier Constabulary, were deployed to sensitive areas like the Red Zone. Critical locations, such as D-Chowk and Islamabad Airport, were shut down.

These measures disrupted daily life, with public transit halted and major roads blocked. Hospitals were put on high alert due to potential unrest, and pre-emptive arrests were made across Punjab. PTI leaders, including former MNA Nafisa Khattak, were detained.

Communication Restrictions Add to Public Frustration

The government also considered suspending internet and mobile services in high-risk areas. This measure aimed to prevent information from fueling unrest. It has caused frustration among the public as roadblocks and security measures severely impacted transportation.

As tensions rise, PTI continues to push for the release of Imran Khan, while the government strengthens its efforts to stop the protest.

The demonstration defies a court order, drawing sharp criticism amid high-profile diplomatic visits.
</excerpt>

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) supporters clashed with security forces in Islamabad as they gathered for a protest despite a court ban. The demonstration, called by PTI Chairman Imran Khan, aimed to denounce alleged election fraud, unjust arrests, and the controversial 26th amendment.

Tear Gas Shelling and Arrests Spark Chaos

PTI accused the government of targeting its peaceful supporters with tear gas and arrests. Sharing footage on social media, the party condemned the “fascist regime” for its extreme measures against citizens.

“It’s absolutely disgusting and shameful how inhumanly this government is treating Pakistanis!” PTI posted on platform X.

Convoys, including that of National Assembly opposition leader Omar Ayub, were reportedly attacked near Taxila with tear gas shells.

Court Ruling and Government Clampdown

The Islamabad High Court deemed the protest unlawful, citing the disruption it could cause during the visit of the Belarusian president. Security forces blocked major roads with containers, and mobile internet services were suspended across the city.

Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi defended the measures, emphasizing the need to protect Islamabad’s Red Zone and maintain order.

“Any protesters who enter that area will be arrested,” Naqvi warned.

Schools Shut Amid Protests

The district magistrate ordered all public and private educational institutions in Islamabad to remain closed on Monday, citing safety concerns as tensions escalated.

Echoes of Violence in Kurram

The PTI protest coincided with mourning for victims of recent violence in Kurram, where clashes and an attack on a convoy killed at least 42 people. Interior Minister Naqvi criticized PTI for protesting instead of attending the funerals, accusing the party of prioritizing demonstrations over solidarity.

Growing Political Crisis

The crackdown on PTI protests highlights deepening political turmoil in Pakistan. With roads blocked, schools closed, and diplomatic tensions rising, the nation braces for the fallout of the escalating conflict between the government and PTI.

</excerpt>

Protests organized by Imran Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) over the past 18 months have cost the government PKR 2 billion, intensifying the strain on Pakistan’s already struggling economy, according to Geo News.

Escalating Costs and Damages

Total Expenditure: Managing PTI protests and sit-ins across Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and Islamabad has cost PKR 2.7 billion.

Recent Spike: Over the last six months, costs surged to PKR 1.2 billion due to heightened demonstrations.

Property Damage: Public and private property damages reached PKR 1.5 billion, including losses to Safe City cameras worth PKR 280 million and damage to 220 police vehicles.

Security Costs

To maintain order, authorities have deployed extensive resources:

Personnel Deployment: Over 30,000 security personnel mobilized for key protest sites in Rawalpindi, Lahore, Attock, and Islamabad.

Transportation Costs: Moving security forces cost more than PKR 900 million, with catering expenses adding another PKR 1.5 billion.

Container Rentals: Authorities spent PKR 800 million to secure 3,000 containers for blocking key routes.

Human and Financial Toll

Loss of Lives: Four security personnel lost their lives, while over 220 were injured in clashes during these protests.

Military Expenses: Deploying Frontier Corps (FC), Rangers, and army personnel added another PKR 300 million to the bill.

Protests Continue Amid Financial Strain

PTI has organized over 120 protests in the last 18 months, including a recent demonstration on Sunday. Preparations for the event alone involved deploying 34,000 personnel, costing an estimated PKR 300 million.

The protests have not only drained Pakistan’s financial resources but also caused significant disruption to public life, leaving the government to grapple with rising economic and security challenges.

</excerpt>

Pakistan’s capital, Islamabad, was placed under a heavy security lockdown on Sunday as supporters of imprisoned former Prime Minister Imran Khan prepared to stage protests calling for his release. The Pakistani Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party, led by Khan’s allies, planned to gather near the parliament building to demand the former prime minister’s freedom, alongside other PTI leaders.

In response to the anticipated protests, authorities blocked key highways leading to Islamabad, with police and paramilitary forces deployed in riot gear. Major roads were closed off using shipping containers, and mobile phone services were suspended in the capital. The Islamabad police issued a statement banning all public gatherings under legal provisions.

Global internet watchdog NetBlocks reported that WhatsApp services had also been restricted in the city ahead of the demonstrations. One of Khan’s close allies, Ali Amin Gandapur, who is the chief minister of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, urged his supporters to gather at the entrance of the city’s red zone, an area that houses key government institutions, embassies, and the parliament building.

Khan’s supporters are demanding the release of political prisoners, including the former prime minister, as well as the resignation of the current government, which they accuse of orchestrating a fraudulent election earlier this year. Since being ousted in 2022 and jailed in August, Khan has faced multiple charges ranging from corruption to inciting violence, all of which he and his party deny.

The last PTI protest in Islamabad in early October turned violent, resulting in the death of a police officer, injuries to several security personnel, and numerous arrests. Both the PTI and security forces blamed each other for instigating the clashes, raising concerns over potential violence during this protest.

Amidst the growing unrest, some Islamabad residents expressed concerns about the ongoing protests, with one local, Muhammad Asif, noting that the political instability was damaging the country’s economy and urging for dialogue to resolve the crisis.

</excerpt>

Islamabad High Court (IHC) on Thursday, November 21, issued an order preventing the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party from holding a planned rally in Islamabad on Sunday. The court cited a new public order law and the upcoming official visit of Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko as key reasons for its decision.

PTI supporters had organized the rally to demand the release of their jailed leader, former Prime Minister Imran Khan. However, it remains unclear whether the party will withdraw its protest plans in light of the court’s ruling.

The IHC’s decision came after a petition was filed by a group of traders, highlighting the Peaceful Assembly and Public Order Act, 2024, which requires organizers to submit a written application for a rally at least seven days in advance. The court noted that no such application had been received for the PTI rally.

In its ruling, the court emphasized the importance of security for the Belarusian president, who is set to arrive in Islamabad on November 24 with a delegation of over 60 people. The court stated that ensuring the safety and freedom of movement of the foreign delegation was critical for maintaining international relations, thus justifying the ban on the rally.

The court also recommended that the government form a panel, potentially led by Pakistan’s Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi, to engage with PTI leaders and inform them about the heightened security concerns surrounding the visit.

Additionally, the Pakistani government has imposed a two-month ban on public rallies in the capital for security reasons, vowing to prevent anyone, including Khan’s supporters, from violating the restrictions.

Despite the court’s order, Khan’s wife, Bushra Bibi, has urged PTI supporters to participate in a large protest scheduled for Monday.

Imran Khan, who was ousted as prime minister in 2022 through a no-confidence vote, has faced numerous legal challenges since his removal from office. He has been in prison for over a year following his first conviction in a corruption case. Khan is involved in more than 150 legal cases, with several convictions that were later overturned in appeals. He was recently granted bail in a case involving the illegal sale of state gifts, but remains incarcerated due to other ongoing cases.

PTI calls for his release as critics question court decisions.
</excerpt>

Former Prime Minister Imran Khan secured bail in the high-profile Toshakhana case from the Islamabad High Court (IHC) on Wednesday. However, his release from jail remains uncertain due to multiple pending cases against him.

Conditions for Bail

The court, presided over by Justice Miangul Hassan Aurangzeb, granted bail contingent on submitting two bonds worth Rs1 million each. The judge also directed Khan to appear before the trial court after release, warning that non-cooperation could result in bail revocation.

Imran Khan, along with his wife, Bushra Bibi, is accused of illegally keeping and selling state gifts while in office. Both deny the allegations, with Khan maintaining that the cases are politically motivated.

Pending Legal Challenges

Although Khan’s lawyer, Salman Safdar, remains optimistic about his eventual release, at least eight pending cases block his freedom. The former Prime Minister has been sentenced in several cases, but convictions have been overturned on appeal.

Khan’s party, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), celebrated the bail decision. PTI MNA Ali Muhammad Khan congratulated the nation, and former senator Faisal Javed demanded his immediate release. Supporters have announced a rally in Islamabad on Sunday to protest, despite a government ban.

Ruling Party’s Criticism

The ruling PML-N criticized the court’s decision, accusing the judiciary of favoritism. Former President Arif Alvi, however, called the verdict a step toward peace and security, urging against further “false cases” against Khan.

</excerpt>

The Pakistani government has imposed a two-month ban on all public gatherings in Islamabad, ahead of a planned protest by the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party. The protest, scheduled for November 24, is aimed at pressuring the government to release former Prime Minister Imran Khan, who has been imprisoned for over a year on multiple charges.

In response to the PTI’s call for a mass demonstration, the federal authorities invoked Section 144, a colonial-era law that prohibits public assemblies. The Islamabad District Magistrate’s office cited concerns over potential “unlawful assemblies” that could disrupt public peace and safety. The order bans gatherings of five or more people, the use of loudspeakers for inflammatory speeches, and the display of firearms or firecrackers. The district magistrate also prohibited the distribution of pamphlets and posters intended to incite tensions.

Despite the ban, PTI leaders, including Khan’s sister Aleema Khan, have called on supporters from various sectors farmers, lawyers, civil society, and students to participate in the protest. In a recent meeting with her brother in jail, Aleema Khan emphasized that the protest is a fight for democracy and freedom, quoting Imran Khan’s message urging citizens to resist martial law and reclaim their rights.

Imran Khan, 72, has been incarcerated since August of the previous year. While some of his convictions have been appealed or granted bail, he remains in jail due to ongoing cases. The PTI’s protest is framed around three key demands: the restoration of judicial powers, the release of jailed party members, and the return of what they claim to be a “stolen mandate” in the controversial 2024 elections. The protests have grown more frequent since September, with the PTI’s last attempt to march on Islamabad in October failing to meet its objectives.

As tensions rise, the government’s ban on public gatherings appears to be an attempt to suppress PTI’s protest momentum, but political analysts suggest that the party may continue to defy the ban, citing citizens’ constitutional right to peaceful assembly.

</excerpt>

The Shehbaz Sharif-led government is reviewing a set of civil service reforms initially developed under Imran Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) government but remained largely unimplemented. The reform plan, created by the PTI’s Task Force on Civil Service Reform, was the result of consultations with over 3,000 participants across 68 sessions, aiming to modernize Pakistan’s bureaucracy through structural, procedural, and incentive-driven changes, according to The News International.

The Task Force, led by Ishrat Husain, proposed significant changes, including reforms to the Central Superior Services (CSS) examination. Key recommendations included the introduction of a preliminary screening test, domain-specific cluster exams, psychometric evaluations, structured interviews, and greater automation. Despite these suggestions, the PTI government did not implement the proposed overhaul of the CSS framework.

The Task Force also called for improved training programs, dividing mid-career and senior management courses into general management and specialized training. While some training changes were enacted, other major proposals, such as reorganizing specialized training institutions and making training mandatory for all civil servants, were left unaddressed.

Regarding performance management, the Task Force suggested replacing the subjective Annual Confidential Report (ACR) system with an objective Performance Evaluation Report (PER), incorporating key performance indicators (KPIs). While performance agreements were introduced between the Prime Minister and ministers, the new evaluation system for civil servants was not widely adopted, despite the development of proformas.

Another major reform under PTI, but later reversed by the Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM), was the mandatory retirement of underperforming officials after 20 years of service. Although upheld by the High Court, the PDM government reinstated the previous system.

The Task Force also recommended monetizing perks such as housing and transport for senior officers and linking annual salary increments to individual performance. These proposals were not implemented under PTI.

The Task Force’s recommendation to recruit technical experts and advisers through a competitive process was partially implemented, with limited appointments, including an IT secretary hired from the private sector. The PTI government, following the Task Force’s advice, conducted merit-based selection for CEOs and MDs of 62 public sector organizations, resulting in 16 expatriate Pakistanis appointed to various positions, yielding positive outcomes.

Also Read: Pakistan PM Shehbaz Sharif Opens SCO Summit 2024, Emphasizing Trade, Terrorism, and Security

For pension reform, the Task Force recommended transitioning to a defined contribution plan for new entrants, which has since been implemented by the current government. Additionally, the Task Force proposed requiring public servants in Grade 19 to pass a public service examination before advancing to higher grades. This proposal, however, was not approved during PTI’s tenure.

As the current government revisits these proposals, there remains an opportunity to implement the transformative civil service changes originally envisioned but left unfinished.

</excerpt>

Islamabad is witnessing renewed legal challenges as opposition leaders, including BNP-M chief Akhtar Mengal, Dr. Fehmida Mirza, Mohsin Dawar, and Mustafa Nawaz Khokhar, filed petitions in the Supreme Court. They argue that the 26th Constitutional Amendment contradicts the foundational principles of the Constitution.

Petitioners Seek Annulment of the Amendment

The petitions demand the court declare the amendment unconstitutional, rendering it void from the outset. They also call for the invalidation of all decisions, actions, and structures established under the amendment.

Concerns Over Judicial Independence

Key sections of the amendment, including 7, 14, 17, and 21, are challenged for allegedly violating judicial independence and separation of powers. The petitioners emphasize that these sections undermine the judiciary’s role and the autonomy of federating units.

Federalism and Constitutional Safeguards at Risk

The petitions stress that Pakistan’s federal structure, rooted in the 1940 Pakistan Resolution, ensures autonomy for its constituent units. They argue that the amendment threatens this foundational framework by compromising the representation and independence of these units.

Call for Judicial Reforms and Seniority Principle

The petitioners propose that constitutional benches be established based on seniority for fixed terms to prevent arbitrary removals. They also demand that deviations from the seniority principle must be justified with written reasons, subject to judicial review.

Political Backlash and PTI Protests

The amendment has faced strong resistance from Imran Khan’s PTI, which claims it undermines judicial powers. PTI protests highlight the political divide surrounding the bill, which proposes 27 changes to various constitutional articles.

With the Supreme Court now under pressure, the future of the 26th Constitutional Amendment remains uncertain.

</excerpt>

As Pakistan’s political climate remains tense, allies of jailed former Prime Minister Imran Khan are expressing hope that a Donald Trump victory in the upcoming U.S. presidential election might expedite Khan’s release from solitary confinement. This expectation is tied to the perceived warm relationship between Khan and Trump during Trump’s first term in office, which some believe could translate into diplomatic support for Khan.

Pakistan’s Interest in the U.S. Election

The U.S. election on November 5, featuring Democrat Kamala Harris against Republican Donald Trump, is being closely watched not only in the United States but also in Pakistan. Many Pakistanis view the potential outcomes as having significant implications for their own country’s political scene. Trump’s first administration saw periods of closer engagement with Pakistan, and some of his South Asia policies overlapped with Khan’s own regional approach. Yet, some analysts argue that changes in Pakistan’s own political and legal frameworks might allow Khan’s release regardless of U.S. election outcomes.

During his presidency, Trump fostered a cordial relationship with Khan, inviting him to the White House in July 2019, where the two exchanged compliments and displayed mutual respect. The leaders met again in early 2020 at the World Economic Forum in Davos. However, when Joe Biden assumed office in 2021, U.S.-Pakistan relations cooled noticeably, marked by an absence of high-level contact. The lack of engagement with Khan underscored how changes in U.S. leadership can impact international ties, particularly between the U.S. and Pakistan.

Recent Appeals and Diplomatic Calls

In late October, over 60 Democratic members of Congress wrote to President Biden, encouraging him to leverage U.S. influence to secure the release of political prisoners in Pakistan, including Khan. In response, Pakistan’s Foreign Office dismissed these concerns, calling them misunderstandings of the local political context. Simultaneously, the Pakistani American Public Affairs Committee publicly endorsed Trump, suggesting his presidency might improve U.S.-Pakistan relations and foster support for Khan’s release. Unconfirmed reports have even surfaced of an American delegation visiting Khan in Adiala Jail, fueling speculation about potential U.S. diplomatic involvement.

Imran Khan’s Legal and Political Struggles Khan, a former cricket star and Pakistan’s prime minister from 2018 to 2022, was removed from office in a no-confidence vote. Initially, he accused the U.S. of orchestrating his removal, though he later directed these claims at Pakistan’s former army chief, General Qamar Javed Bajwa. Despite acquittals in several cases, Khan has remained in prison for over a year, with a three-year sentence issued in August 2023 for allegations involving the illegal sale of government gifts. Following his conviction, the Election Commission of Pakistan disqualified him from public office for five years. Khan’s party, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), has pledged to continue his mission, even as members face arrests and alleged intimidation ahead of the 2024 general elections.

Hopes for International Intervention Many PTI leaders believe a Trump victory could help secure Khan’s release. Senior PTI official Taimor Saleem Khan Jhagra remarked on the personal rapport between Trump and Khan, which he hopes could translate into tangible support. He also referenced recent calls from U.S. Congress members advocating for Khan’s release, which, while encouraging, are tempered by Pakistan’s internal political dynamics and the influence of the nation’s powerful establishment.

Geopolitical and Strategic Considerations Dr. Farhat Asif, an Islamabad-based geopolitical expert, noted that a Trump victory might impact Pakistan’s domestic political landscape. However, she emphasized that any influence from a potential Trump administration would likely be grounded in U.S. strategic interests in South Asia—such as regional security and countering Chinese influence—rather than purely humanitarian motivations. Asif suggested that Trump’s unconventional approach to diplomacy, evident in his dealings with North Korea, might translate to a firmer stance if Pakistan’s policies clash with American objectives.

Analyst Perspectives on U.S.-Pakistan Dynamics Karachi-based analyst Adeeb Uz Zaman Safvi believes Khan’s independent approach has historically unsettled both the U.S. and Pakistan’s establishment. He views U.S. policymakers as favoring alliances with Pakistan’s entrenched political elites, a stance aimed at weakening Pakistan’s ties with Russia and curtailing its collaboration with China on projects like the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor. Safvi compared Khan’s resilience to Nelson Mandela’s, asserting that Khan’s influence remains strong, even behind bars.

Outlook for Khan’s Fate While Trump’s potential return to office has stirred hopes among Khan’s allies, analysts caution that any shift in U.S.-Pakistan relations will ultimately depend on how Khan’s situation aligns with the strategic interests of the United States in the region. As Pakistan prepares for its general elections in 2024, Khan’s supporters remain cautiously optimistic, hoping for international support to secure his release.

Jail authorities refute allegations, stating Khan is provided with all necessary amenities, regular exercise, and medical checkups, ensuring his well-being.
</excerpt>

Former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan, currently serving his prison sentence in Adiala Jail, is at the center of a dispute over his treatment behind bars. Despite PTI’s claims of mistreatment, including allegations of restricted electricity, lack of access to news, and limited time outside his cell, jail authorities refute these assertions, insisting that Khan receives proper meals, regular medical checks, and all B-Class jail privileges.

PTI Claims Imran Khan “Ill-treated” in Jail

PTI Chairman Gohar Ali Khan has expressed concerns about Khan’s prison conditions, accusing jail authorities of cutting off electricity for five days, denying him newspapers and TV access for two weeks, and limiting his time outside the cell to just two and a half hours a day. He also claimed that Khan had been kept in solitary confinement in a small cell, violating his constitutional and legal rights.

Gohar further stated that Khan was not informed about the arrest of his sisters and criticized the limited time allowed for meetings, noting that their last visit lasted only 45 minutes.

Jail Authorities Deny PTI’s Allegations

Adiala Jail authorities rejected the claims, emphasizing that Khan is being treated in accordance with B-Class jail rules, which include all entitled amenities. According to the authorities, Khan enjoys uninterrupted electricity, meals prepared by a professional cook, and ample exercise time.

Imran Khan’s Daily Meals

Contrary to PTI’s allegations, jail officials detailed Khan’s daily meals, which are prepared according to his preferences. His breakfast includes coffee, chia seeds, beetroot juice, yogurt, chapati, biscuits, and dates. Lunch consists of traditional curry, local chicken, chapati, salad, green tea, and mutton, while dinner features porridge, coconut, coconut water, and grapes.

Health and Well-being

Jail authorities assured that Imran Khan’s health is regularly monitored, with medical examinations conducted three times a day. A recent health check-up by doctors from Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) confirmed Khan is healthy and active. They also refuted claims of isolation, stating that Khan has been receiving newspapers daily and exercises for two hours each day.

The authorities emphasized that Khan’s security and living conditions are in line with B-Class jail standards.

Strict conditions have been set for the power show, including time restrictions and bans on hate speech.
</excerpt>

Imran Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party was granted permission on Friday to hold its much-anticipated power show in Lahore, despite a government crackdown on its members. The Lahore High Court intervened, directing local authorities to allow the event under strict conditions.

Strict Conditions Set for the Rally

The district administration, following a high court order, issued a No Objection Certificate (NOC) with 43 conditions for the rally. The power show will take place on Saturday at Ring Road, Kahna, from 3 PM to 6 PM. PTI is pushing to extend the time to 11 PM, with negotiations still underway.

Among the conditions:

– No hate speech or anti-state statements.
– Afghan flags and paid manpower from Afghanistan are banned.
– Leaders facing hate speech trials are prohibited from speaking.
– The administration is responsible for arresting any proclaimed offenders at the rally.

PTI’s Rally: A ‘Do-Or-Die’ Moment

Imran Khan, who remains in jail, called the rally a “do-or-die” moment for his party. The PTI aims to highlight three key issues:

1. Demand for Khan’s release.
2. Upholding the Constitution.
3. Protesting against soaring inflation.

Rising Tensions Ahead of the Rally

Earlier, authorities denied PTI permission to hold the rally at Minar-e-Pakistan, leading to clashes and the arrest of 50 PTI members across Punjab. The party’s leaders, including Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur, are preparing for the rally, hoping for a large turnout to pressure the government.

Lahore Prepares for PTI’s Show of Strength

The rally in Lahore is expected to draw significant attention as PTI prepares to make its voice heard amid escalating political tension.

Despite heavy police presence and roadblocks, Khan’s supporters mobilized, clashing with police and clearing entry points. The rally marks PTI’s first major demonstration since February’s elections.
</excerpt>

Thousands rallied in Islamabad on Sunday, calling for the release of former Prime Minister Imran Khan, who has been imprisoned for over a year on charges his party, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), deems politically motivated. This demonstration, organized by PTI, marked their first significant public show of force since the contentious national and regional elections held in February.

Obstacles and Clashes

Despite significant obstacles, including roadblocks and a heavy police presence, Khan’s supporters mobilized from across Pakistan. Images on social media showed protesters successfully removing shipping containers blocking major entry points into the city. PTI leaders and activists expressed their unwavering commitment to Khan, with Hammad Azhar declaring they would not rest until his release.

Tensions escalated as some attendees clashed with riot police, who used tear gas to disperse the crowd. Local media reported instances of stone-throwing by protesters, leading to injuries among police officers. The Islamabad administration had deployed riot police and set up roadblocks to prevent potential unrest.

Political and Legal Context

Imran Khan, ousted from office in April 2022, has been jailed since August 2023 on charges related to inciting violence on May 9, 2023, when his supporters attacked military facilities. His case has been further complicated by the arrest of a former spy chief, an ally from Khan’s tenure. Despite Khan’s denial of these allegations, his previous convictions have been overturned or suspended.

In July, the government announced plans to ban PTI, accusing the party of inciting violence and leaking classified information. The Human Rights Commission of Pakistan criticized this move, calling it a blow to democratic norms. Additionally, a UN panel found Khan’s detention lacked legal grounds and appeared aimed at disqualifying him from future political office.

</excerpt>

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has accused the police of firing shots at its supporters during a rally in Islamabad on Sunday. The rally was held to demand the release of the party’s founder and former Prime Minister, Imran Khan, who is currently imprisoned.

In a social media post, PTI condemned the police for using force against what it described as “peaceful protesters,” referring to the situation as “Undeclared Martial Law.”

PTI’s statement on X read: “Scenes Pakistanis have grown accustomed to in this #UndeclaredMartialLaw. Heavy shelling by Islamabad police on peaceful Pakistanis gathered in massive numbers for Imran Khan & PTI’s rally. Shameful, despicable, desperate, cowardly behavior by the illegitimate, authoritarian regime. These disgraceful, unlawful acts only strengthen the people’s resolve to fight for their ‘Haqeeqi Azadi’!”

The party further criticized the police officers involved, calling their actions “disgusting and shameful,” and emphasized that the people had sent a “strong message” through the rally.

PTI had initially been denied permission to hold the rally multiple times, but despite this, supporters from across the region gathered on the outskirts of Islamabad. Party leader Hammad Azhar addressed the crowd, stating that the rally was about upholding the rule of law and the Constitution. He expressed confidence that the protest would lead to Imran Khan’s release.

“We will, God willing, secure Imran Khan’s release,” Azhar said during his speech.

The rally had originally been planned for July and later August, but was postponed after authorities revoked permission, citing security concerns. Imran Khan, who has been imprisoned since August, had his previous convictions suspended but was re-arrested by the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) in a new case shortly after a court accepted his appeals.

PTI has been trying for months to gain approval for a public rally in the capital but faced repeated rejections. The party sought permission from the Islamabad High Court (IHC) in March and, after several delays, rescheduled the rally for September 8. Even as preparations were finalized for the current rally, the police blocked key entry points to the city, citing security threats.

Senior PTI leader and former National Assembly Speaker Asad Qaiser criticized the government’s tactics, calling it a “fascist regime” trying to create a “hostile environment” by placing blockades and containers to stop protesters from reaching the venue.

Qaiser said in a video posted on X: “They approved the NOC and the court has permitted the rally, but Rawalpindi has been closed off.” Punjab spokesperson Shaukat Basra also accused the Punjab police of following “unconstitutional orders” to prevent workers from attending the rally.

</excerpt>

According to Barrister Aqeel Malik, Pakistan government’s spokesperson for legal affairs, former Prime Minister Imran Khan’s cases related to the May 9 riots may be transferred to military courts. Nationwide protests erupted on May 9 last year after paramilitary rangers removed Khan from the Islamabad High Court (IHC) during a corruption case.

During the protests, social media was inundated with videos showing rioting and vandalism at various locations, including the Lahore Corps Commander’s residence and the General Headquarters in Rawalpindi. Khan, who was already in custody, was formally “arrested” in connection with these cases on July 15. This occurred just one day after his apprehension with his wife, Bushra Bibi, in a new Toshakhana case, following their acquittal in the Iddat case, as reported by Dawn.

In an interview with DawnNewsTV, Malik was asked if he believed Khan’s trial could be moved to a military court after the arrest of former intelligence chief Lt-Gen (retired) Faiz Hameed. He responded by saying, “Yes, absolutely.”

He stated that the events and vandalism on May 9 warranted the application of the Army Act because military installations were targeted and damaged. Malik also claimed that the PTI founder “orchestrated” and “properly operated” the riots that occurred last year.

“This was premeditated. This was pre-planned,” Malik said.

He further said regarding military courts that “it is entirely possible that Imran Khan’s trial is held in a military court and the reason for that is because the Army Act will be applicable.”

Malik noted that while many people have claimed that any conviction by a military court could be appealed to the high court, he added that neither the High Court nor the Supreme Court would have the jurisdiction to consider such an appeal.

“According to the legal provisions, the appeal for the case would be taken by the military court of appeals,” Malik further stated.

He added that after all appeal options are exhausted, a final mercy appeal could be made to the army chief or the president.

Khan has previously alleged a plan to try him in a military court. He claimed that Faiz Hameed was being pressured to become an approver against him in order to facilitate his trial in a military court for the May 9 incidents, as reported by Dawn.
