Union Minister of Railways, Communications, and IT Ashwini Vaishnaw has recently paid a visit to the Hyperloop test tunnel at IIT Madras, where he made an official declaration that the Hyperloop test tube under construction will become the world’s longest at 410 meters shortly. At present, the 410-meter-long Hyperloop test facility at IIT Madras is the longest in Asia.

First conceptualized by Elon Musk in 2013, Hyperloop technology is a groundbreaking high-speed transport system that propels pods above empty-sealed tubes at speeds surpassing 1,000 km/h. This visionary mode of travel is intended to make transit more carbon-neutral, more effective, and fast.

India’s drive for indigenous hyperloop technology

Ashwini Vaishnaw underlined during his visit plans to produce electronic parts for the Hyperloop at Chennai’s Integral Coach Factory, hence strengthening India’s promise to create native technology. IIT Madras Tops NIRF 2024 for Sixth Consecutive Year

The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras has once again secured the top spot in the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) 2024, marking its sixth consecutive year at the top of the rankings. The Ministry of Education announced the NIRF 2024 results on Monday.

IIT Madras retained its position as the leading institution, while the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) in Bengaluru was recognized as the best university. IIT Madras has also been the top engineering college for the past nine years. In the management category, IIM-Ahmedabad, IIM-Bangalore, and IIM-Calcutta were listed among the top five.

The NIRF 2024 evaluates institutions based on five main criteria: teaching, learning, and resources; research and professional practice; graduation outcomes; outreach and inclusivity; and perception. This year, three new categories were added, bringing the total to 16 categories. These categories include overall rankings, universities, medical, engineering, management, law, architecture colleges, research institutions, pharmacy, dental, agriculture and allied sectors, innovation, state universities, open universities, and skill universities.

A total of 10,885 higher education institutions participated in this year’s NIRF. The National Institutional Ranking Framework, introduced by the Ministry of Education in 2015, is a ranking system designed to assess and rank higher educational institutions in India. The methodology for the rankings was developed by a Core Committee established by the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) to define the broad parameters for evaluating universities and institutions.

JEE Advanced 2024: Exam Response Sheets To Be Released–Click To Download

Indian Institute of Technology Madras will release the JEE Advanced Exam 2024 Response Sheet tomorrow, i.e., Friday, May 31, 2024. Candidates who have appeared for this year’s JEE Advanced Exam can download the response sheet from the official website after its release. The official website for downloading the response sheet is jeeadv.ac.in. Candidates will need to visit the candidate portal to download the response sheet.

The JEE Advanced Exam’s response sheet will be released tomorrow evening at 5 o’clock. Candidates can download it thereafter. The response sheet will be released for both Paper 1 and Paper 2. In the next phase, the provisional answer key for the JEE Advanced Exam will be released.

JEE Advanced 2024: Exam Day Essentials & Dress Code

IIT Madras is hosting the Joint Entrance Exam (JEE) Advanced 2024, with the institute having recently made the admit cards available for download. Candidates can access their hall tickets through the official JEE Advanced website at jeeadv.ac.in.

According to IIT Madras, the JEE Advanced 2024 exam is set to take place on May 26, 2024. Paper 1 will be conducted from 9 am to 12 pm, followed by Paper 2 scheduled from 2:30 pm to 5:30 pm on the same day.

Guidelines for Exam Day: What You Need to Know

Admittance to the exam hall requires candidates to present their admit cards, as entry will not be permitted without them.
Students must present a valid original photo ID card, which can be one of the following: Aadhaar card, school/college/institute ID, driver’s license, voter ID, passport, PAN card, or a signed certificate with a photograph.
Candidate verification will be conducted at the center by both the invigilator and representatives from IIT. There will be no additional time allotted for completing the exam.
Engaging in unfair practices or impersonation during the exam will be treated as a severe offense and could result in legal consequences.
Mandatory security screening will be conducted for all candidates prior to entering the examination center.
Candidates may bring only pens, pencils, transparent bottles containing drinking water, a downloaded admit card, and an original photo identity card.
Prohibited items include smart/digital/programmable/analog watches, mobile phones, Bluetooth devices, earphones, microphones, pagers, health bands, or any other electronic gadgets, as well as printed/blank/handwritten papers, log tables, writing pads, scales, erasers, geometry/pencil-boxes, pouches, calculators, pen drives, electronic pens/scanners, wallets, handbags, cameras, goggles, or similar items.
Candidates are advised against wearing charms/taweez, metal items such as rings, bracelets, earrings, nose pins, chains/necklaces, pendants, badges, brooches, and clothing with large buttons. It is recommended that candidates wear open footwear like chappals and sandals.
Candidates are required to arrive at the examination center early and complete the necessary formalities as specified in the admit card.
Candidates who arrive at the examination center after the start of each paper (9 am for Paper 1 and 2:30 pm for Paper 2) will not be permitted to take the exam under any circumstances.

Exam Pattern and Scoring System

The JEE Advanced 2024 will be administered as a computer-based test (CBT) consisting of two papers, each lasting three hours. Both Paper 1 and Paper 2 will cover three subjects, Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics. The exam will include various question formats such as multiple-choice questions (MCQs), numerical answer type (NAT) questions, and matching-type questions.

The Indian Institute of Technology Madras experienced a significant increase in donor funding in the financial year 2023-24, reaching `513 crore compared to `218 crore the previous year. This boost in funding was achieved through contributions from alumni, corporates, and other donors, reflecting a 135% increase.

The institute’s success in fundraising can be attributed to its dedicated team of 55 professionals, which includes a 12-member fundraising and marketing squad consisting entirely of alumni. Working tirelessly at the IIT’s office of Institutional Advancement, this team focused on identifying potential donors and securing their support.

Director Professor V Kamakoti stated, “The institute has attracted the highest amount of external funding among academic institutions in the country for the past two years. We’re confident of crossing the `500 crore mark in the coming years as well.”

Kaviraj Nair, CEO of the office of Institutional Advancement, emphasized the efforts made to recruit professionals from various industries. He highlighted the competitive nature of securing funds from corporate social responsibility (CSR) and alumni contributions, noting that donors are convinced of the impact and scale of their donations to IIT-M.

In addition to the funds raised, there are pledges exceeding `200 crore that will be fulfilled over the coming years. This funding, along with `900 crore in grants from the Centre and `45 crore from tuition fees, is used for salaries, day-to-day operations, scholarships, research and development, and establishing new departments and buildings.

V Shankar, chair of the IIT Madras alumni charitable trust, credited the alumni community’s efforts in fundraising, which have been ongoing for 20 years. He highlighted the personal connection established when alumni reminisce about their experiences at the institute.

Of the total funds raised, two-thirds (`368 crore) came from alumni, `95 crore from corporate entities, and `50 crore from other donors. The majority of donors (960 out of 1,072) are alumni.

Shankar also mentioned that recent efforts to enhance transparency and donor stewardship have been effective in attracting more donations from alumni worldwide.

115 IIT Students Died Over 20 Years, Madras Records Highest Toll With 26, Bombay 10

Information obtained through a Right to Information (RTI) request filed by Dheeraj Singh, an alumnus of IIT Kanpur and founder of the Global IIT Alumni Support Group, has revealed that at least 115 students of the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) have died by suicide since 2005. Among these, 98 deaths occurred on campus, with 56 being by hanging, while 17 were off campus.

According to the data, from 2005 to 2024, IIT Madras had the highest number of recorded deaths at 26, followed by 18 at IIT Kanpur, 13 at IIT Kharagpur, and 10 at IIT Bombay. Five deaths have been recorded this year.

Singh filed an RTI application after the passing of Darshan Solanki, an IIT Bombay student on February 12, 2023. The application sought data regarding the deaths of IIT students nationwide over the previous two decades. “The higher education department, which comes under the Union Ministry of Education, initially rejected my application and asked me to file separate RTIs for individual institutes,” Singh stated. “After an appeal, the ministry instructed all IITs to share the data.”

During eight months, Singh received data from only 13 out of the 23 IITs. “I received some data from the RTI response,” he stated. “I also collected data from authentic sources in the public domain, which included National Crime Record Bureau statistics and answers to questions posed in Parliament.”

Numerous suicides by IIT students, which have garnered significant attention and raised widespread concern, have occurred over the past year. “I just want to highlight the huge pressure on students in the premier institutes of the country,” Singh emphasized the need for substantial measures to address the academic and social pressures faced by IIT students. “There is an urgent need to reform IIT education to make it less stressful for students, faculty, and parents.”

Following Solanki’s death, internal surveys conducted by several IIT student organizations revealed that 61% of respondents attributed student deaths to academic stress. This was trailed by job insecurity (12%), family problems (10%), and harassment (6%). Eleven percent of students selected the ‘Other Reasons’ category.

After Solanki’s death, the University Grants Commission (UGC) initiated various measures and urged universities to prioritize the health, welfare, and psychological well-being of students on campus by promoting physical fitness and sports. Additionally, amid the COVID-19 pandemic, the Indian government introduced the Manodarpan program to provide psychological support for the mental and emotional well-being of students, teachers, and families.

The government has recommended institutions to “robust” their systems, encompassing prevention, detection, and remedial measures to tackle potential causes of suicides. However, emails sent by HT to the joint secretary (IITs) and secretary in the department of higher education remained unanswered.

IIT-Bombay implemented a preventive measure by eliminating one subject per year for first-year students following a decision made during the IIT-Bombay senate meeting last year, which occurred after Solanki’s tragic suicide. Officials at IIT-Bombay stated that this action aims to alleviate pressure on incoming students and provide them with additional leisure time to acclimate to campus life.

A senior professor at IIT highlighted that while students secure admission to the IITs through intense competition, they subsequently encounter substantial pressures from both the institution and society. “Whether they come from impoverished or affluent backgrounds, students encounter similar societal pressures of doing well,” he stated. “We must address sensitive issues at both institutional and societal levels that can help alleviate the mental strain on students.”

A former professor at IIT-B observed that students who gained admission to the IITs were effectively trained to excel in the Joint Entrance Exam. “But once they reach IIT, there is no spoon-feeding and they have to be good learners,” he stated. “After some unfortunate incidents, IIT decided to cut down academic pressure and chalk out mental health programs.”

The professor also highlighted the global economic downturn and diminished job placement prospects. “In the last few years, placements at all IITs are not on par,” he stated. “Final-year students also succumb to the stress and pressure of placements.”

Another Indian has taken over at the top shot of a tech major in the United States of America. Sridhar Ramaswamy, an IITan, has taken over as Chief Executive Officer and member of the Board of Directors of Data Cloud company Snowflake.

Ramaswamy, who was the Senior Vice President of AI at Snowflake, took over from Frank Slootman who retired as the CEO of Snowflake on Wednesday. “I am honored to have been chosen to lead the company into this next chapter of growth. We have an enormous opportunity ahead to help all customers leverage AI to deliver massive business value. My focus will be on accelerating our ability to bring innovation to our customers and partners,” stated Ramaswamy after his elevation.

Slootman will continue to serve as Chairman of the Board at Snowflake. “As the leading cloud data platform, Snowflake is at the epicenter of the AI revolution. There is no better person than Sridhar to lead Snowflake into this next phase of growth and deliver on the opportunity ahead in AI and machine learning. He is a visionary technologist with a proven track record of running and scaling successful businesses. I have the utmost confidence in Sridhar and look forward to working with him as he assumes this new role,” said Slootman.

The 1967 born Ramaswamy is from Tamil Nadu in India. He went to the US in 1989 after completing his B.Tech degree in Computer Science from IIT Madras. He went on to do his Ph.D. in computer science from Brown University in the US before embarking on his career.

Since joining Snowflake in May 2023 in connection with the company’s acquisition of Neeva, the world’s first private AI powered search engine, Ramaswamy has been spearheading Snowflake’s AI strategy. He led the launch of Snowflake Cortex, Snowflake’s new fully managed service that makes AI simple and secure for all users to quickly drive business value.

Prior to joining Snowflake, Ramaswamy co-founded Neeva in 2019. Previously, Ramaswamy led all of Google’s Advertising products, which included search, display and video advertising, analytics, shopping, payments, and travel. During his 15 years at Google he was an integral part of the growth of AdWords and Google’s advertising business from $1.5 billion to over $100 billion.

Ramaswamy also held research positions at Bell Labs, Lucent Technologies, and Bell Communications Research (Bellcore). Ramaswamy was a Venture Partner at Greylock Partners from October 2018 until recently, and he sits on the board of trustees at Brown University.

Kashi Tamil Sangamam Phase II scheduled from December 17 to 30

In 2023, December 17–30 is the planned dates for the second edition of the Kashi Tamil Sangamam (KTS). Ek Bharat Shreshtha Bharat Yuva Sangam, a government initiative, is the reason for the event. On November 27, 2023, the Kashi Tamil Sangamam Phase II registration portal will go live through IIT Madras. The shared history and culture of North and South India are celebrated during the KTS. Through knowledge, culture, and best practices exchanged, the event seeks to deepen the ties that bind the two regions. December 17 is the first day of the holy Tamil month of Margali, and December 30 is the suggested dates for the second edition of this Ek Bharat Shreshtha Bharat program.

Like its first edition, this programme proposes to take forward the objective of reviving the living bonds between Varanasi and Tamil Nadu–two important centres of learning and culture in ancient India–by facilitating people-to-people connections across different walks of life.
As per the Ministry of Education, “In Phase 2 of KTS, it is proposed that around 1400 people from Tamil Nadu and Puducherry will travel by train to Varanasi, Prayagraj and Ayodhya for an 8-day immersive tour, including the travel time.

IIT-Madras sets up internal committee to look into suicide incidents

After two suicides incident in a month at the Indian Institute of Technology, an inquiry committee has been formed to look into such incidents, the IIT-Madras informed on Wednesday.

The IIT-official said in a statement, “A standing Institute Internal Inquiry Committee, including elected student representatives, which has been recently constituted will look into such incidents.”

The statement of the official further reads that Post-Covid period has been challenging and the institute has been endeavoring to sustain and improve the well-being of the students/scholars, faculty as well as staff on campus while constantly evaluating the various support systems in place.

Notably, a third-year B.Tech student attempting suicide at the IIT-Madras Campus. The deceased was identified as 20-year-old Vaipu Pushpak Sree Sai, a native of Andhra Pradesh.

The press release of the institute reads, “It is with deep anguish that IIT Madras conveys the untimely passing away of a third-year BTech student of the Electrical Engineering department on March 14.” The release further reads that “we request everyone to please respect the privacy of the family at this unfortunate moment.”

“The Institute expresses its sincere condolences and stands united in grief along with the friends and family of the deceased student. May the departed soul rest in peace,” it added.

Second suicide death by IIT-Madras student in a month

It has been reported that a third-year B Tech student of IIT Madras died by suicide on Tuesday, said the police. The deceased was identified as Vaipu Pushpak Sree Sai native of Andhra Pradesh. The incident took place in the student’s hostel room and marks the second such incident in just a month at the prestigious institute. He was found hanging in his Alakananda hostel room on the IIT-Madras campus.

According to the police officials, Pushpak hadn’t attend yesterday’s classes in the afternoon. At that moment, his friends got suspicious and checked into his room. The room was locked from the inside. His friends somehow opened the room and found him hanging. Kotturpuram police have recorded the matter and sent the body to hospital for autopsy examination. The reasons behind the suicide are not yet known, and investigations are underway. The IIT Madras community has expressed shock and grief over the loss of the student and has urged everyone to prioritize mental health and seek help if needed.

IIT Madras wins tops InQube 2022 concludes at Shiv Nadar Institution of Eminence

The second iteration of InQube, a national business quiz, business case, and simulation competition organised by Shiv Nadar Institution of Eminence’s School of Management and Entrepreneurship, has come to a close. InQube was a complex tournament that brought together more than 3,000 teams from more than 50 Indian locations in order to find, challenge, connect, and reward India’s undergraduate young brains.

The final round of the competition took place from September 9–11, 2022. The winning teams received monetary awards totaling Rs 5 lakh.

The winners, Anvit Reddy and Anand R from IIT-Madras, said, “We are extremely happy that we participated in InQube, and the competition was tough right to the last round. We are truly thankful for the hospitality shown to us by the Shiv Nadar Institution of Eminence, and we will urge others to participate and gain the learning experience that InQube has provided us.”

The main guest during the Grand Finale was Roshni Nadar Malhotra, Trustee of the Shiv Nadar Foundation and Chairperson of HCL Technologies. She praised the entrepreneurial spirit displayed by the competing teams while congratulating the victors.

InQube is a multifaceted competition that was created especially for undergraduate students in order to help them discover and ignite their entrepreneurial zeal. It was first held in 2021. All enrolled participants were invited to take part in the first round, which was conducted online. The top 100 teams then advanced to the online quiz known as the cluster round, where the top two teams from each cluster were chosen to compete in the national quarterfinals (held in-person).

The top three teams from each of the 12 zones were chosen to compete in the business case and simulation on campus as well as the national semifinals. Venky Srinivasan, CEO and co-founder of Nexus Consulting, hosted the grand finale, which featured the top six teams from the semi-finals.

191 STUDENTS IN IIT-M, 6 IN ANNA UNIVERSITY TEST COVID POSITIVE

CHENNAI: The Tamil Nadu government had allowed final-year undergraduate students and post-graduate students to attend classes from November. Though the government allowed the colleges to function, it stated that students can attend classes on a voluntary basis.

Since 1 December, 71 students have been tested positive inside the IIT Madras campus and following that all faculty members, project staff members and research scholars have been asked to work from home. Students, scholars and project staff members staying on the campus have been advised to confine themselves to their hostel rooms and were subjected to RT-PCR tests. Till Wednesday, 1,104 individuals were tested and 191 have been tested positive so far in IIT Madras campus.

After two students were found with Covid symptoms inside the Anna University, Guindy campus, 550 were tested inside Anna University and six have been tested positive so far.

After the Covid outbreak inside the educational institutes, health secretary Radhakrishnan has written to all district collectors and Chennai Corporation Commissioner to monitor educational institutions and hostels. Higher education department secretary Apoorva has also instructed all the colleges and institutions to follow the SOPs issued by the government strictly.

Health Secretary Radhakrishnan, who inspected the IIT-M campus on Wednesday, said the students inside the colleges don’t follow the social distancing norms properly or wear mask when they are inside college mess. He added that now educational institutes have been instructed to arrange pick up facility at the canteens to avoid gathering of students in a closed place and instruction has been sent to all educational institutes to strictly adhere to the SOPs.
