</excerpt>

The International Criminal Court has issued arrest warrants against two high-ranking Taliban leaders—supreme leader Haibatullah Akhundzada and chief justice Abdul Hakim Haqqani—on the charge of crimes against humanity for the systematic persecution of Afghan women and girls.

In a Tuesday statement, the ICC stated that there were “reasonable grounds to believe” that the two leaders masterminded and implemented policies that denied Afghan women basic rights, such as education, work, freedom of movement, expression, and religion.

Policies Charged with Building Gender Apartheid

The court noted that ever since the Taliban takeover on August 15, 2021, the regime has come up with a series of repressive actions against women. These include the prohibition of girls going to secondary schools, the exclusion of women from employment in most industries, and the limitation of their access to public areas.

All these practices, the rights organizations say, have resulted in a regime of gender apartheid and pushed Afghan women into social and political invisibility.

Global Response Welcomes ICC Action

Canadian-based Afghan women’s rights activist Tahera Nasiri welcomed the ICC action, stating it was a long-overdue acknowledgment of the abuse Afghan women have suffered.
Four years, they’ve been telling us to shut up, stay indoors, hide our faces, abandon education, voices and dreams. And now an international court is saying: ‘Enough. This is a crime,'” she explained in an interview with The Guardian.

Nasiri further explained that the warrants designate the Taliban leaders as international criminals.
“Even if Akhundzada and Haqqani never appear before a court, they now bear the stigma of international criminals. They are no longer merely leaders of Afghanistan; they are wanted men,” she remarked.

Criminal Responsibility for Gender-Based Crimes

The head prosecutor of the ICC, Karim Khan, opened the request for the warrants in January 2025. When making the announcement, he stated:
“Our commitment to pursuing accountability for gender-based crimes, including gender persecution, is an absolute priority.”

The Taliban commanders are “criminally responsible” for enacting policies that systematically violate the rights of Afghan girls and women, Khan said.

Human Rights Groups Appeal for International Action

Human Rights Watch welcomed the ICC decision as a watershed for worldwide accountability. “The senior Taliban leaders are now men wanted for their alleged persecution of women, girls and gender non-conforming individuals,” the organisation’s director of international justice, Liz Evenson, said.

She called on the international community to stand behind the ICC and see that perpetrators of gender-based atrocities are brought to justice.

Uncertain Future for Afghan Women

As strong as the ICC’s stance has been, it remains to be seen whether the warrants will bring about any real change on the ground in Afghanistan. The Taliban regime has refused to accept the jurisdiction of international institutions such as the ICC.

Still, for many Afghan women and advocates, the move represents a symbolic victory and a call to the world to stop ignoring their plight under a regime accused of systematically erasing their existence

</excerpt>

Arrest warrants have been issued by the International Criminal Court (ICC) for two senior leaders of the Taliban on charges of crimes against humanity for systematic persecution of women and girls in Afghanistan.

In a Tuesday statement, the ICC stated that there were “reasonable grounds to believe” that Taliban Supreme Leader Haibatullah Akhundzada and Chief Justice Abdul Hakim Haqqani were behind policies that dramatically curtailed the rights of Afghan women and girls. These include prohibitions on education, employment, freedom of movement, and expression, and the dismantling of privacy and family life.

The court stated these crimes were committed between August 2021, when the Taliban retook control, and January 2025, when Chief Prosecutor Karim Khan issued the warrants formally.

Afghan human rights activists welcomed the gesture as a milestone. “This is a recognition of our suffering,” said Tahera Nasiri, a women’s rights activist who now resides in Canada. “The Taliban instructed us to vanish. Now the world is telling them: This is a crime.

Even though it is not certain that the warrants will ever be executed, the move is the first time there has been a formal indictment of senior Taliban officials with international crimes. “They’re no longer just political leaders they’re fugitives,” Nasiri said.

Since 2021, women have been prohibited by the Taliban from attending secondary school, public places, and the vast majority of paid work. The UN and other global agencies have denounced their policies as institutionalized gender persecution, and a few activists are calling for their actions to be officially recognized globally as gender apartheid.

Human Rights Watch and Amnesty International have called on ICC states to move fast. “These men need to be held responsible,” stated HRW’s Liz Evesson.

Former Taliban captive Parwana Nijrabi added: “It may not be easy to arrest them, but this is an important step toward justice for Afghan women.”

</excerpt>

The International Cricket Council (ICC) has named Sanjog Gupta as its new Chief Executive Officer. He will assume office on July 7, 2025, and be the seventh person to serve in the role.

Sanjoy Gupta Succeeds Geoff Allardice in ICC

Gupta, whose past experience has been as Head of Sports at Disney Star, takes over from Geoff Allardice, who declared his intention to resign this January. Allardice joined the ICC in 2012 as General Manager Cricket following his stint as Cricket Operations Manager at Cricket Australia. He was appointed acting CEO in March 2021 and officially appointed to the position in November that year.

Gupta Looks Ahead to Cricket’s Expanding Future

“It is a privilege to have this opportunity, especially at a time when cricket is poised for unprecedented growth,” said Gupta. “These are exciting times for the sport as marquee events grow in stature, commercial avenues widen and opportunities such as the women’s game scale in popularity.”

Jay Shah Welcomes Strategic Vision in ICC

Commenting on the appointment, ICC chairman Jay Shah said, “Sanjog brings extensive experience in sports strategy and commercialisation, which will be invaluable for the ICC. His deep understanding of the global sports as well as the M&E landscape… will prove essential in our ambition to grow the game.”

Gupta assumes office at a time of significant happenings in global cricket, such as the game being added to the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics and enhanced technological integration throughout the game.

However, he may face an ICC fine for violating uniform rules by wearing black socks, a potential Level 1 offence.
</excerpt>

Shubman Gill’s captaincy introduction as India’s Test captain began on a heavenly note but may conclude with a shocking snag. Leading the side with composure at Headingley on Day 1 of the first Test match against England, the 25-year-old made history as only the fifth Indian to achieve a century in his inaugural match as captain.

Gill completed on 127, not out, a classy and fluent innings that came off 175 balls with 14 fours and a single six. It was his sixth Test hundred and the first one abroad, making him a frontline pillar in India’s present and future in the red-ball game. His previous best contribution abroad, a determined 91 at the Gabba in 2021 was crucial to India’s record-breaking series triumph. On Friday, his unbroken century partnership with Yashasvi Jaiswal (101) led India to the dominant path, ending Day 1 at 359/3.

Possible Clothing Rule Violation

In the midst of widespread admiration for Gill’s batting, a small but significant issue has emerged. The young captain might be in trouble with the International Cricket Council (ICC) for allegedly breaching uniform regulations.

Clause 19.45 of the ICC’s Clothing and Equipment Regulations, which have been revised in May 2023, states that Test match players are allowed to wear light grey, white, or cream-colored socks only. Shubham Gill has been spotted wearing black socks, though, which will be a breach of rules.

If it is treated as a premeditated offense, the offense would fall in the Level 1 category, and he may be fined between 10 to 20 percent of his match fee.

Referee’s Call May Determine Outcome

While there is some regulation, it is in the end at the discretion of the match referee. If the black socks worn by Gill are an instance of unforeseen issues, like wet or damaged equipment, then the event can be dismissed as an error and will not result in punishment.

Regardless of what the outcome is, there has been admiration for Gill’s leadership and batting. His dominant presence at the crease and his ability to guide India into Day 1 with confidence have left a strong foundation for the remainder of the match. He will look to carry that momentum into Day 2 when play resumes on Saturday.

</excerpt>

The International Cricket Council (ICC), in consultation with the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC), has introduced a major modification of cricket laws — banning the now-infamous ‘bunny hop’ boundary catches. This revision will be included in ICC’s playing conditions from June 17, 2025, while the MCC’s governing laws will add the change from October 2026.

Why the Bunny Hop Catch Is Now Illegal

The change in law has a direct bearing on fielding methods in which players leap over beyond the boundary mark and touch the ball in mid-air before re-entering the field to effect the catch. While breathtaking, such dismissals — as pulled by Michael Neser in BBL 2023 and Tom Banton (with a contribution from Matt Renshaw) in 2020 — will be deemed illegal as soon as the new law is enforced.

In an MCC note to member boards, it is said, “While the current law saw some spectacular fielding moments, it also saw some unorthodox-looking catches that, to most of the cricketing public, are considered unfair.”

Neser’s Catch Prompted Debate

The MCC used Neser’s questionable dismissal of Jordan Silk, explaining how he “bunny hopped” over the rope before finishing the catch inside. While within the law as it stood, the action “seemed like the fielder had — quite literally — overstepped,” the note said.

Those instances raised questions among supporters and insiders, leading to a review of Law 19.5.2, which hadn’t been updated since 2010.

What the New Law Says

Under the new phrasing, any fielder who makes a second touch of the ball having leaped from outside the rope must be grounded inside the area of play before any subsequent involvement in the delivery. Otherwise, a boundary will be given.

MCC has come up with a new terminology where ‘bunny hop’ completely outside the boundary is eliminated,” the note states. “But such catches where the fielder shoves the ball up from within the boundary, moves outside and then scoops inside to catch the ball, are allowed.

That is, the fielder is only given a single opportunity of touching the ball in mid-air from airborne leaps outside the rope. After that point, all future actions need to take place within the playing field.

Rule Also Affects Relay Catches

The new rule will also be applied to relay catches. When a fielder deflects the ball in mid-air when out of the rope and does not get back in before the catch is made — even by another player — the attempt will be considered a boundary.

“Even if the ball is deflected — to another fielder or within the field of play — if the fielder goes beyond the boundary, or later steps over it, then a boundary will be run,” explained the MCC.

They added, “To clarify, that is one opportunity, and only one opportunity, for the fielder to make contact with the ball after leaping from beyond the boundary. Once that is passed, the boundary is a solid line.”

When Will the New Rule Take Effect?

The updated boundary rule will be enforced from June 17, 2025, coinciding with the start of the new World Test Championship (WTC) cycle — beginning with the Sri Lanka vs Bangladesh Test in Galle. The MCC will formally include the rule in its Laws of Cricket from October 2026. This overhaul aims to eliminate ambiguity and preserve fairness in fielding efforts near the boundary.

The ICC and MCC have been firm in rejecting the contentious ‘bunny hop’ method of catches at the boundary, more bringing cricket rules into line with the public’s idea of fairness. Admiration for the athleticism involved was tempered by the updated law: the boundary is now a hard line — literally and according to law.

</excerpt>

The International Cricket Council (ICC) issued a statement late on Sunday stating that it had agreed with the sport’s national bodies in Australia, India and England to assist the displaced Afghan women’s players.

Afghan women cricketers will at last receive top-level assistance in a bid to return to international competition following the formation of a taskforce by the sport’s world governing body to manage direct funding, elite coaching and facilities for displaced players.

Dozens of Afghan national women’s team players moved to Australia when the Taliban regained power in 2021 and imposed bans on women’s sport. The players have been looking for official assistance since then.

ICC Chair Jay Shah Reaffirms Commitment

ICC chairman Jay Shah said his organisation is “deeply committed to fostering inclusivity and ensuring every cricketer has the opportunity to shine, regardless of their circumstances.”

“The ICC believes this (support fund) will not only help preserve the sporting careers of Afghan women cricketers but also reinforce the sport’s role as a unifying force that transcends borders and adversity,” he said.

Exhibition Match Highlights Afghan Women Cricketers’ Journey

An Afghanistan Women’s XI also played a Cricket Without Borders XI at Melbourne’s Junction Oval in an Australian government-supported exhibition game in January, bringing together 21 women cricketers who were previously contracted to the Afghanistan Cricket Board.

Since their exit from Afghanistan many of the women cricketers have been settled in the Australian capital and Melbourne and playing for club sides in local competitions.

Voices from the Team on Step Taken by ICC

Firooza Amiri said ahead of that exhibition match in January that her team “represents millions of women in Afghanistan who are denied their rights.”

Amiri escaped her native country with her family and initially went to Pakistan before being evacuated to Australia.

During Taliban control, the Afghanistan Cricket Board is unable to have a national women’s team because the laws of the country prohibit women from engaging in sport, studying and medical studies, actions that have been condemned by global groups such as the International Criminal Court.

Membership Obligations and Global Protests

Afghanistan is a full member of the International Cricket Council and as a condition of that membership it should be obliged to possess a women’s national team.

England and Australia have declined to play direct series against Afghanistan in protest, but still play the Afghan men in ICC events.

Renewed Hope After Men’s Team Success

It was the men’s Afghanistan historic march to the semifinals of last year’s Twenty20 World Cup that led the women’s team members to once more seek the ICC’s help regarding funding.

The team approached the ICC initially in 2023, seeking assistance for a refugee team from Australia to rejoin international cricket.

ICC Role As Netanyahu Defies Arrest Warrant: Test For Global Justice & Diplomacy | TDG Explainer

<excerpt>The ICC’s arrest warrant for Netanyahu tests the court’s global influence as Israel rejects its jurisdiction. His defiance sparks diplomatic tensions, highlighting challenges in enforcing international law and holding leaders accountable for alleged war crimes.
</excerpt>

The International Criminal Court (ICC) is a key institution for prosecuting suspects of the most serious crimes, including war crimes and crimes against humanity. But its efficacy is usually questioned when prominent leaders, like Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, are issued arrest warrants and decide to disregard them. Such an occurrence presents serious questions regarding the ICC’s jurisdiction, repercussions of non-cooperation, and wider implications for global diplomacy.

The ICC’s Mandate and Enforcement Challenges

The ICC was established by the Rome Statute in 2002 as an independent court that would seek to hold individuals responsible for heinous international crimes. Although the ICC can issue an arrest warrant, it does not have its own mechanism for enforcement and is dependent on member states to carry out the warrants. This becomes an issue when the state’s motivation is based on political considerations, and the state will only enforce selectively, reducing the credibility of the court.

Netanyahu’s Arrest Warrant: A Case Study in Defiance

In November 2024, the ICC issued warrants for the arrest of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant on charges of alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity in the Gaza conflict. The accusations include the employment of starvation as a weapon of war and attacking civilians. Israel, which is not a signatory to the Rome Statute, rejected the jurisdiction of the ICC and labelled the accusations as politically motivated.

Regardless of the warrant, Netanyahu continued to engage with other nations, especially traveling to Hungary in April 2025. Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán not only greeted Netanyahu but declared Hungary’s exit from the ICC, decried as highly politicized. This act amounted to a tremendous test of the authority of the ICC and showcased the difficulties involved in implementing its mandates where member states decide to value political associations over obligations under the law.

Consequences of Disregarding ICC Warrants

When leaders disregard ICC arrest warrants, a number of consequences arise:

Erosion of International Law: Disobedience impairs the universality and efficacy of international legal norms, potentially promoting impunity for serious crimes.

Diplomatic Strain: States that disobey the ICC can face diplomatic isolation or strained diplomatic relations with nations that support the mandates of the court. However, as in the case of Netanyahu, coalitions with similar-minded governments tend to counteract these consequences.

Affect on the ICC’s Credibility: Repeated failures to comply can undermine the court’s perceived power and effectiveness and challenge its image as a deterrent to international crimes.

Global Diplomacy and the ICC’s Role

The actions of the ICC have profound effects on world diplomacy. Warrants of arrest for incumbent leaders, particularly those from non-member states, are likely to make international relations and negotiations difficult. While the ICC is regarded by some states as a vital institution for justice, others see it as an overreach of sovereignty or an organization prone to political interference. Such a contradiction hinders international cooperation and the greater goal of prosecuting international crimes.

The rebellion against ICC arrest warrants by politicians such as Benjamin Netanyahu highlights the difficulty confronting international justice institutions. While the ICC seeks to promote accountability, its dependence on cooperation by member states and the politics of international affairs tend to paralyze it. Improving the ICC’s leverage necessitates a unified global commitment towards upholding legal requirements above politics so that justice may reign regardless of one’s political position.

Hungary to Exit ICC as Netanyahu Faces War Crimes Charges

<excerpt>Hungary to exit the ICC as PM Viktor Orban deepens ties with Netanyahu, defying international legal obligations.
</excerpt>

Hungary has revealed plans to leave the International Criminal Court (ICC), synchronised with Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu visiting Budapest. PM Netanyahu has an ICC arrest warrant over allegations of war crimes in Gaza. The action is a cause for concern regarding Hungary’s adherence to international justice and its increasing alignment with Israel.

Hungary’s Exit and the ICC’s Arrest Warrant

Hungary’s State Secretary for International Communication, Zoltan Kovacs, earlier confirmed the country will initiate the ICC withdrawal procedure on Thursday. If completed, Hungary will become the sole member state of the European Union which is not part of the ICC, a court founded by the Rome Statute in 2002 to try war crimes and crimes against humanity.

This move comes as Netanyahu’s first foreign trip in years after the ICC issued an arrest warrant against him in May 2024. The court had charged him with war crimes such as “starvation as a method of warfare” and crimes against humanity. According to the Rome Statute, Hungary being an ICC signatory was duty-bound to arrest Netanyahu. Rather, he got a red-carpet welcome from Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban.

The European Union is still divided on Netanyahu’s legal status. While Spain and Ireland have threatened to arrest him if he enters their countries, others such as France and Germany have challenged the court’s authority over Israel since it is not a member of the ICC. Hungary’s decision now eliminates any doubt about where it stands, strongly supporting Netanyahu.

Hungary’s Pro-Israel Stance and Political Implications

Hungary has always stood as one of Israel’s most robust European supporters. Hungarians favor Israel, as evidenced by Budapest’s public displays of support, such as posters and stickers remembering victims of Hamas’ October 7 attack. Hungary has also opposed EU sanctions against Israel and vetoes resolutions criticizing its Gaza war.

Orban’s invitation of Netanyahu in the face of the ICC warrant showcases his government’s open defiance of international norms. Critics claim Hungary’s withdrawal from the ICC constitutes a pullback from global systems of accountability and emboldens authoritarian forces within the country.

As geopolitical tensions mount, Hungary’s withdrawal from the ICC will fuel controversies surrounding justice, international law, and alliances in an evolving world order.

India won their third title, while Pakistan hosted its first global tournament in nearly 30 years.
</excerpt>

The International Cricket Council (ICC) has thanked the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) and the Emirates Cricket Board (ECB) for organising the ICC Men’s Champions Trophy 2025. Played over four venues, including Karachi, Lahore, and Rawalpindi in Pakistan as well as Dubai in the United Arab Emirates, the competition ran from 19 February to 9 March and was Pakistan’s first worldwide cricket event since 1996.

India’s third Champions Trophy came with a four-wicket win over New Zealand in the final at Dubai International Stadium on Sunday.

ICC hails the Event’s Organization by PCB and ECB

Given the coordination of the competition, Geoff Allardice, chief executive of ICC, noted Pakistan’s Board of Control Management’s hard work.

In an ICC release, Allardice stated, “We want to express our gratitude and warm applause to the Pakistan Cricket Board for their effective organization of the ICC Men’s Champions Trophy 2025.”

He drew attention to the event’s importance by saying, “Given that this was the first international multi-team cricket tournament held in the nation since 1996, this event was of great relevance for the PCB. Everyone should be very proud of their work in updating the stadiums, getting the playing surfaces ready, distributing the matches, and accommodating the teams and visitors.”

Allardice also thanked the Emirates Cricket Board for arranging five of the games in Dubai and for further strong assistance to the ICC in organizing its major men’s and women’s events.

Champions Trophy 2025: A Victorious Show.

The competition exposed the exhilaration of ICC events and attracted many worldwide followers. Viewers followed the games at sites and on digital platforms, therefore underlining cricket’s worldwide attraction.

Allardice commended the eight teams that took part for keeping the competition interesting and congratulated India on their iconic victory.

He said, “Thanks to the eight teams competing for their interesting performance and congratulations to India for clinching a third Champions Trophy title in a memorable final.”

With Pakistan successfully hosting an international event after nearly three decades and Dubai still a major global cricket venue, the Champions Trophy 2025 establishes a robust precedent for next competitions.

He stated that Pakistan didn’t deserve representation and called for improvements in the nation’s cricketing performance.
</excerpt>

Former Pakistan wicketkeeper-batsman Kamran Akmal spoke on the controversy of the lack of a Pakistan representative at the prize distribution ceremony of the just-concluded Champions Trophy. In his opinion, Pakistan did not deserve to be at the ceremony, citing the country’s poor cricket performance.

Kamran Akmal Criticizes Pakistan’s Absence in Prize Ceremony

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is protesting against the International Cricket Council (ICC) for not including an official from the host country at the prize ceremony after India’s win over New Zealand in the final. Now, the PCB is asking the ICC for an official explanation about the matter.

PCB Chief Executive and tournament director Sumair Ahmad Syed attended the venue in Dubai. As PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi was ill and could not attend, Sumair was the appointed representative. He was, however, nowhere to be found at the official ceremony, which caused an uproar from the PCB.

Akmal had this to say about the incident: “Pakistan’s cricket standards have gone down a lot, and hence this is not a nice thing.”.

The ICC showed us the mirror. The tournament’s director (Sumair) was there. He was available, and why wasn’t he in the ceremony? It is because we don’t deserve to be there. We are not playing good cricket. Minow teams have shown us the mirror,” Akmal stated on his YouTube channel.

“No one discussed how Pakistan hosted the tournament. If we play such cricket, we will be treated like this. If you play for yourself, there will be no respect,” he further added.

Miscommunication Between PCB and ICC?

Recent news indicates the PCB has also asked for a formal explanation from the ICC in this regard. The PCB did not notify the ICC that Sumair would be substituting Naqvi at the ceremony, ESPNcricinfo reports. The PCB, however, maintains that it was the ICC’s duty to call them for clarification.

While Pakistan looks for answers, this scandal has again brought to the fore the question of the country’s cricketing standards, with many voices, including Akmal’s, demanding drastic improvements.

</excerpt>

Pakistan was able to host the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 successfully, for which ICC Safety and Security Manager Dave Musker gave them a lot of credit. The event ended with India qualifying for the final against New Zealand, which was hosted in Dubai under the hybrid format. The second semi-final, featuring New Zealand vs South Africa, in Lahore was the final game to be hosted in Pakistan.

Pakistan’s First ICC Event Since 1996 World Cup

Pakistan staged most of the Champions Trophy matches, its first ICC event since the 1996 World Cup. The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) invested billions of rupees to upgrade Lahore, Karachi, and Rawalpindi stadiums to offer world-class facilities to players and viewers alike.

ICC Praises Pakistan’s Security Plans

Dave Musker of ICC congratulated Pakistan’s security men on their impressive plans for the tournament. He thanked the police, Rangers, and army in a video message posted before the semi-final in Lahore.

“Just wanted to do a small video to thank all the Pakistani police, the rangers and the army. They have been absolutely superb. There were obviously concerns from visiting teams coming over to Pakistan, I personally had no doubts. The professionalism of the people I have been involved with has been exceptional. The co-operation and the respect I have been shown is amazing,” said Musker.

Positive Image for Pakistan on Global Stage

Musker stressed that the Champions Trophy 2025 was able to project a good image of Pakistan, its people, and law enforcement agencies. “It’s been a brilliant tournament thus far,” he further added.

The Pakistan cricket team had a dismal tournament despite the hosting success, not winning a single group-stage game and not qualifying for the semi-finals.

India’s Matches Under Hybrid Model

While Pakistan hosted 10 matches, India hosted all their matches in Dubai under the hybrid model. The India-New Zealand final was also played in the UAE.

The hosting of the Champions Trophy 2025 by Pakistan successfully gives more strength to Pakistan’s ability to host international cricket tournaments with world-class security and infrastructure.

</excerpt>

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has criticized the International Cricket Council (ICC) after India’s national anthem mistakenly played for a brief moment before the Australia vs. England Champions Trophy match on Saturday. The PCB has demanded an explanation from the global governing body regarding the incident.

Unintentional Anthem Mix-Up

At the start of the match, when Australia and England lined up for their respective national anthems, spectators were left puzzled as India’s anthem played for a second before abruptly stopping. A source close to the ICC revealed that the PCB had sent a letter to the ICC, questioning how such an error occurred.

The PCB has made it clear that the ICC needs to offer some explanation as their people are responsible for the (national anthem) playlist of teams in the Champions Trophy.

“Since India is not playing in Pakistan, it is hard to understand how their anthem was played by mistake from the playlist,” the source said.

India’s Matches Held in Dubai

India had refused to travel to Pakistan for the Champions Trophy, citing security concerns. As a result, all of India’s matches are being played in Dubai, including their crucial clash against Pakistan on Sunday—a match that could eliminate Pakistan from the tournament if they lose.

Previous PCB Complaint Over Logo Display

This is not the first instance of PCB raising concerns with the ICC. The board had previously written to the governing body after Pakistan’s name and logo were not displayed on TV screens during India’s match against Bangladesh in Dubai on Friday.

The ICC later clarified that it was a mistake and assured the PCB that all matches in Dubai would now feature the correct three-line horizontal logo with Pakistan’s name.

ICC Yet to Respond

With the anthem mix-up now adding to the controversy, the ICC has not yet provided an official response to PCB’s latest complaint. All eyes are now on the governing body’s next move as the Champions Trophy continues.

</excerpt>

A new controversy broke out before the ICC Champions Trophy when a video appeared on social media showing the Indian flag missing from the National Stadium in Karachi. The video posted by fans on social media pointed out that while flags of other countries taking part were visible, the Indian flag was not. This led to online debate, with fans commenting on how surprised they were. Although the reason why the Indian flag was not there is not known, it may have something to do with the Indian team choosing to play all of its Champions Trophy games in Dubai.

Watch the video here:

No Indian flag in Karachi: As only the Indian team faced security issues in Pakistan and refused to play Champions Trophy matches in Pakistan, the PCB removed the Indian flag from the Karachi stadium while keeping the flags of the other guest playing nations. pic.twitter.com/rjM9LcWQXs

— Arsalan (@Arslan1245) February 16, 2025

The Karachi Stadium will be hosting matches of teams such as New Zealand, South Africa, Afghanistan, Pakistan, and England. The video from the venue, days ahead of the tournament, displayed flags of the competing countries but raised questions among fans as to why the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) had decided to omit the Indian flag.

The Indian team had refused to tour Pakistan for the Champions Trophy, which led to a decision by the Pakistan Cricket Board and the International Cricket Council (ICC) to adopt a hybrid format for the tournament.

In this agreement, India will host all of its matches, including the final and semi-finals, in Dubai if they advance. Under a compromise that has been reached among the BCCI, PCB, and ICC, the Pakistan cricket team will not host its matches in future ICC events hosted in India either.

</excerpt>

International Criminal Court (ICC) Prosecutor Karim Khan has become the first individual to face US sanctions under an executive order signed by former President Donald Trump.

The sanctions target ICC officials investigating US citizens or its allies for alleged war crimes. Khan, a British national, now faces economic restrictions, including:

Freezing of US-based assets

A ban on traveling to the United States

Travel restrictions for his family members

ICC Responds to US Sanctions

The ICC swiftly condemned the sanctions, stating that it stands by its staff and remains committed to seeking justice for victims of atrocities worldwide.

Court officials gathered in The Hague to discuss the implications of Trump’s actions, which echo similar sanctions imposed during his first term.

The ICC’s Role and Jurisdiction

Established in 2002, the ICC prosecutes individuals accused of genocide, crimes against humanity, and war crimes. It has jurisdiction in member states and in cases referred by the United Nations Security Council.

Khan, in his role, provides regular updates to the UN Security Council, including on cases involving Libya and Sudan’s Darfur region. However, these sanctions may complicate his ability to travel for official duties.

UN and International Reaction

Deputy UN spokesperson Farhan Haq emphasized that the US must uphold its obligations under the UN Headquarters Agreement, allowing ICC officials to enter the country for official briefings.

The move has sparked international criticism, with legal experts arguing that such sanctions undermine the ICC’s authority and hinder global efforts to prosecute war crimes.

Players continue batting despite head injuries, raising doubts about the necessity of concussion substitutes.
</excerpt>

There is a huge flaw in the concussion of the ICC rules 1.2.7.3 and 1.2.7.5 which all teams can take advantage of this rule in a wrong
way. As soon as the ball hits a player`s head, It is said that the medical team comes to the field and showers questions on that player. For example, what’s your name? Where are you at the moment and which team are you playing against? Question is that what is the guarantee that the affected player spoke the truth? Can’t teams take undue advantage of this rule when he makes wrong statements?

In this entire scenario, match referee Javagal Srinath is being criticized a lot for this decision. Match referee Chris Broad, Kevin Pietersen and Sunil Gavaskar have taken him to task for this decision.

Secondly, after being hit on the head, the player is not able to continue his game, he should return to the pavilion as soon as the ball is hit, but what happens is that the player continues the game despite being hit on the helmet. If Shivam Dube gets hit on the helmet on the fifth ball of the 20th over, then he crossed run on the last ball (where he was run-out), then what is the need of concussion in bowling for him.

Five years ago in Canberra, Mitchell Starc’s ball hit Ravindra Jadeja’s helmet, which led to his replacement in the bowling, Yuzvendra Chahal was his replacement who proved a match winner. The question is that even when Jadeja suffered a concussion, he did not leave the field. On the other hand, Washington Sundar’s shot went for a run and then hit a boundary at long-on and then pulled for another boundary. One run off the last ball. That means your body and mind were working properly.

First concussion substitute in the test was Marnus Labuschagne who came in place of Smith in the second inning in a Ashes test at Lords in 2019. In this match, Smith was hit on the helmet by Jofra Archer’s ball, on which he left the field, but after about an hour, he returned to the field and hit three boundaries on Chris Woakes, but Labuschagne was played in the second inning in place of him. Labuschagne was also a concussion substitute for Cameron Green in the ODI against South Africa in Bloemfontein. That’s understandable because Green retired hurt as soon as the bouncers came from Kagiso Rabada.

In Pune replaced Shivam Dube with Harshit Rana as his concussion substitute. When the rule talks about like-for-like replacement, then how can Harshit be his replacement. Harshit has the ability to bowl consistently at 145 kmph, while Shivam Dube has not bowled in nine of the last 13 T20I matches. He bowled only against the USA and Zimbabwe. It means he was not considered worthy of bowling against a big team. Then how can the replacement of such a part-time bowler with a regular pacer be justified? At that time, Ramandeep Singh was fielding as a substitute player. Ramandeep is called a batting all-rounder like Shivam Dube. He could have been the perfect replacement for Dube but that’s not what match referee Javagal Srinath had in mind. Why did he come under pressure from the Indian team management and agree to the name of Harshit Rana as a replacement? Srinath himself has been a great fast bowler of Team India. Obviously, the ICC concussion rules need to be reviewed further.

</excerpt>

India achieved a commanding 4-1 victory against England in the home T20I series, wrapping up with a significant 150-run win in Mumbai. Nonetheless, the controversy related to the concussion substitute rule from the fourth T20I persisted, with veteran ICC match referee Chris Broad accusing the governing body of “bias and corruption. ” At the same time, former India captain Sunil Gavaskar criticized the Indian team management regarding the decision.

“Independent match officials were introduced to prevent situations like this! Why is the ICC reverting to the ‘bad old days’ of bias and corruption? ” Broad posted on X.

He further questioned the involvement of a non-neutral match referee, specifically targeting Javagal Srinath, who officiated the match. In response to a social media discussion, Broad concurred that “an Indian Match Referee” should not have allowed the replacement. “Match officials ought to be independent to eliminate bias! (sic),” he added.

Former England batter Kevin Pietersen also chimed in, claiming that the decision to allow pacer Harshit Rana as a concussion substitute for Shivam Dube was wrong. “Concussion sub is quite the topic everywhere here atm and my view is. . . it was NEVER a like-for-like replacement and the match referee should simply acknowledge he got that one wrong. End of event for good and we move on to another great clash this evening (sic),” Pietersen tweeted.

‘Dube was clearly not concussed. . . ‘

Dube was hit on the helmet in the last over of India’s innings but continued his batting and was dismissed on the following ball. He did not take the field during England’s chase, and Rana was brought in as a replacement, with the concussion substitute being officially declared only by the 10th over.

In his column for The Telegraph–, Gavaskar criticized head coach Gautam Gambhir and captain Suryakumar Yadav, claiming that the decision was unwarranted.

He wrote: “In the Pune game, Dube batted right till the end after having been hit on the helmet earlier, so clearly, he was not concussed. Therefore, permitting a concussion substitute was not correct. Yes, there could have been a substitute if he had strained a muscle while batting, but that would have been solely for fielding and he could not have bowled.

“Even with the most generous interpretation of the like-for-like term, there was nothing similar between Dube and Rana. With tongue firmly in cheek, one might say that they share the same height and possess comparable fielding standards. Otherwise, there’s nothing like for like as far as they are concerned. England has every reason to feel cheated. This Indian team is an exceptional team and doesn’t require its victories to be marred by such actions. “

</excerpt>

Emphasizing the high-stakes “all or nothing” format of the event, the International Cricket Council (ICC) has kicked off its promotional drive for the Men’ 2025’s Champions Trophy. Every result directly affects qualification, so the competition will feature the top eight teams from all over the world competing in vital must-win games.

Featuring a powerful promo with MS Dhoni, who captained India to victory in 2013, the campaign establishing the tone for the next competition is driven by the slogan &’Har Match Do-or-Die&’. Famed for his usually cool composure, Dhoni assumes a seldom seen, intense part in the advert in line with the high-pressure, tense atmosphere of the Champions Trophy.

Sweating from the great pressure, and a visual image representing the fierce rivalry, Dhoni starts the promo in an ice-filled bathtub among a snow-covered background. The advertisement’s cool but poignant words, “Ek bhai match mein phisle, mantra se nikle,” point strongly to the unforgiving quality of the competition.

Thinking about the Champions Trophy, Dhoni said, “The ICC Men&’s Champions Trophy has always been a special event for me; it is here that the best all around the globe face off in high-stakes, life-or-death games. Players can handle the pressure on-field, but supporters’ excitement and anxiety are off the charts. Partaking in this movie was nostalgic, but I am excited to engage with viewers and see every game like one of them this time around.”

Captaining India, Rohit Sharma will start their Champions Trophy on February 20 in Dubai, followed by a well-publicized match against Pakistan on February 23 and another meeting with New Zealand on March 2. On February 19, the competition will begin; the last is set for March 9.

</excerpt>

Sources close to the matter disclosed on Friday that the International Criminal Court (ICC) is implementing major measures in order to secure its employees and activities against an impending US sanctions threat. Following the recent US House of Representatives vote which aims to sanction the court over its decision to issue arrest warrants for Israeli leaders, the ICC has allegedly been paying the salaries of its staff three months ahead of time, in anticipation of possible sanctions restrictions.

The US bill, targeting foreign individuals involved in prosecuting US citizens or their allies, would have devastating effects on the court. It would sanction any person who investigates, arrests, or prosecutes citizens from non-member countries like Israel, which is a primary target of the ICC’s investigation into war crimes in Gaza. The scope of these sanctions remains unclear, but the ICC is bracing for major financial setbacks, with one source revealing that steps have been taken to back up evidence due to concerns that Microsoft, which currently works with the court, may need to cease its collaboration.

Established to prosecute crimes of war, crimes against humanity, and genocide, the ICC is at high risk of operational paralysis as sanctions would be mandated on banks and financial institutions aligned with the United States, therefore severely limiting its ability to carry out its business. This has happened before. In 2020, sanctions were imposed on the ICC’s then-prosecutor Fatou Bensouda for probing alleged war crimes by US troops in Afghanistan by the Trump administration.

ICC President Tomoko Akane has warned that such sanctions could rapidly undermine the work of the court and threaten its very existence.

The ICC insists on compliance with regulations, stating all teams must feature the host’s name. Failure to comply could result in strict actions.
</excerpt>

A storm has brewed as BCCI objects to the decision by India’s Cricket board to carry the word ‘Pakistan’ on their kits as per requirements of ICC regulation. International Cricket Council recently notified all teams must feature the logo of the tournament along with the host country’s name on kits even if not the host venue of matches.

It is every team’s responsibility to print the logo of the tournament on their shirts,” an ICC official was quoted while elaborating “All teams are supposed to carry on.” It did mention that, though, action from the board can be anticipated in case of kits that won’t sport the word ‘Pakistan’.

Despite reports that the BCCI was unwilling to include Pakistan’s name, the Pakistan Cricket Board has denied receiving any such communication. The controversy follows months of tensions between the BCCI and the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), particularly after India declined to send its team to Pakistan for the Champions Trophy.

A compromise was reached but hosting future ICC events may come at a cost to the BCCI. There is also confusion regarding whether Indian captain Rohit Sharma will be allowed to travel to Pakistan for a curtain-raising match featuring all the team captains.

</excerpt>

Virat Kohli was involved in a physical altercation with Australian debutant Sam Konstas on Day 1 of the India vs Australia Test in Melbourne. The incident occurred after Konstas took a single off Mohammed Siraj’s final ball of the 10th over. As Konstas walked toward his batting partner Usman Khawaja, Kohli, who was near the ball, moved in his direction, and the two collided. Neither player changed course, leading to a brief confrontation.

Kohli turned and exchanged words with Konstas, who responded in kind. Khawaja quickly intervened, separating the two players, while the umpires also spoke to Kohli and Konstas to diffuse the situation.

Vaughan and Ponting Criticize Kohli’s Actions

Former England captain Michael Vaughan expressed disappointment, suggesting the match referee, Andy Pycroft, would review the incident. Vaughan remarked that Kohli, a player of great experience, would likely regret his actions. “Virat changed direction and walked straight into Konstas. He’ll look back and question why he did that,” Vaughan said.

Ricky Ponting also criticized Kohli, stating, “Virat walked a whole pitch over to his right and instigated that confrontation. It’s clear where the fault lies.”

Despite the altercation, Konstas remained unfazed, continuing to dominate with the bat. He took on India’s star bowler, Jasprit Bumrah, smashing him for a six and two fours in the following over. The 19-year-old went on to score a quick-fire half-century off 52 balls, becoming the youngest Australian debutant since Pat Cummins to reach this milestone. Konstas was eventually dismissed for 60 off 65 balls by Ravindra Jadeja.

Konstas, who replaced Nathan McSweeney in the lineup, became Australia’s fourth youngest Test debutant.

Media reports have speculated about a ‘hybrid’ model, where India’s matches might be played in Dubai, but no official confirmation has been issued.

Meanwhile, a note from broadcaster Star India to the International Cricket Council (ICC) has shed light on the financial stakes if either India or Pakistan withdraws from the tournament. According to The Times of India, the broadcaster outlined the potential revenue impact tied to the participation of these two nations.

During the sale of its four-year media rights, the ICC separately sold rights for the Indian market, with Star India’s deal accounting for 90% of the ICC’s global revenue share. If India opts out of the Champions Trophy, ICC members could lose 90% of the $750 million media rights value. In contrast, Pakistan’s withdrawal would result in a loss of less than 10% of the total revenue.

Industry insiders noted, “The ICC is well within its rights to shift the tournament to any country if it benefits the property (read: Champions Trophy). This decision isn’t as complicated as it seems.”

Addressing speculation about Pakistan leveraging the Asia Cup issue, sources clarified, “This is strictly an ICC matter. The Asia Cup is under the jurisdiction of the Asian Cricket Council, with separate broadcasters and decision-making bodies.”

Despite the challenges, officials have dismissed the possibility of canceling the tournament, emphasizing efforts to reach a resolution.

</excerpt>

The International Cricket Council (ICC) informed the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) during a board meeting on November 19 that a hybrid hosting model is the only viable solution for the Champions Trophy 2025, following India’s refusal to grant its team permission to travel to Pakistan.

Despite the PCB’s insistence on hosting all matches in Pakistan, the ICC clarified that this arrangement is not feasible. The PCB has requested a day to consult with its government, and further discussions are scheduled for November 30. Sources suggest the PCB may ultimately accept the hybrid model after consultations.

Potential Outcomes:

Acceptance of the Hybrid Model: India’s matches, one semi-final, and the final would be held in Dubai, while the remaining matches would take place in Pakistan. PCB retains partial hosting rights.

Rejection of the Hybrid Model: If Pakistan remains firm, the ICC could revoke its hosting rights, awarding the tournament to another country. This could lead to Pakistan boycotting the event.

The meeting, attended by ICC members virtually, failed to reach a consensus. PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi reiterated Pakistan’s stance against the hybrid model, stating, “Pakistan will not agree.”

Pakistan secured hosting rights for the Champions Trophy in 2021 and has been renovating its stadiums. However, recent political protests in Islamabad, which led to Sri Lanka A cutting short their tour, have raised security concerns.

Pakistan had previously hosted the 2023 Asia Cup under a hybrid model, accommodating India’s refusal to play on Pakistani soil. India and Pakistan last played bilateral cricket in the 2012-13 season, with India last visiting Pakistan during the 2008 Asia Cup.

</excerpt>

The International Cricket Council (ICC) is getting ready to take a final call on the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy, which Pakistan is scheduled to host. But the fate of the tournament hangs in the balance as India has stuck to its stance of not playing in Pakistan, given the tense bilateral relationship. The ICC’s executive board will meet virtually on November 29 to discuss the scheduling and venue deadlock.

The finalization of the schedule has been delayed due to India’s insistence on a ‘hybrid’ model, wherein the matches involving India will be played in a neutral venue, likely the UAE. PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi is facing a lot of opposition within the ICC board as most members of the board are keen to settle this to ensure India’s participation.

An ICC spokesperson confirmed the meeting, saying, “The ICC board will meet on November 29 to discuss the Champions Trophy schedule.” According to reports, PCB may be convinced to accept the hybrid model as a Champions Trophy without India could result in significant financial losses for the ICC and the cricketing ecosystem.

A similar hybrid model was used for the 2023 Asia Cup where India’s matches were held in Sri Lanka while Pakistan played other matches. The PCB is expected to receive financial benefits along with the hosting fee of $70 million for accepting this hybrid model.

This would come days before BCCI secretary Jay Shah takes up his position as ICC chairman on December 1. PCB hints at retaliatory measures, potentially boycotting future ICC events in India, such as the Women’s World Cup and the Asia Cup, should their demands not be met.

</excerpt>

The International Criminal Court (ICC) has made headlines with its arrest warrants for several high-profile figures, including Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, former defense minister Yoav Gallant, and Hamas’s military chief Mohammed Deif. These warrants represent a significant but challenging step for the ICC, which has struggled for 22 years with limited recognition and enforcement capabilities.

Despite being backed by 124 member states, the ICC relies on nations to execute arrest warrants. However, countries like Russia, the United States, Israel, and China refuse to recognize the ICC’s jurisdiction, complicating the court’s efforts to apprehend suspects.

ICC’s Historic Warrants and the Challenges Ahead

Since its inception in 2002, the ICC has launched 32 cases involving war crimes, crimes against humanity, and genocide. Yet, despite issuing 56 arrest warrants, only 21 have been executed. With no police force of its own, the court faces immense challenges in catching these suspects.

“Without cooperation from member states, it’s difficult to make progress,” says former ICC adviser Pascal Turlan. Political interference, witness intimidation, and national resistance to handing over suspects are just some of the hurdles that have slowed justice.

High-Profile Cases and Limited Convictions

Among the most notable ICC cases are those against Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ugandan warlord Joseph Kony. However, the low conviction rate remains a concern, with only 12 guilty verdicts since the court’s creation. The ICC has been criticized for its challenges in securing convictions, particularly when powerful nations defy its authority.

Can Arrest Warrants Serve as a Deterrent?

While the chances of Netanyahu, Deif, or Gallant facing trial in the near future are slim, their arrest warrants send a strong signal. Some experts argue that even if convictions are unlikely in the short term, the ICC’s actions serve as a moral stand against impunity.

“The ICC’s pursuit of justice is about doing what’s right,” says legal expert Nancy Combs. “It may not have immediate effects, but it sends a clear message to the world about accountability.”

India’s firm stance against traveling to Pakistan has left the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) adamant about hosting the event entirely within their country.

India last played in Pakistan during the 2008 Asia Cup, and diplomatic tensions have since prevented bilateral cricketing ties. Pakistan, hosting its first ICC event in 29 years since the 1996 Cricket World Cup, was previously stripped of hosting rights for the 2008 Champions Trophy and co-hosting the 2011 World Cup due to security concerns.

ICC Advocates Hybrid Model

According to ANI, the ICC is engaging in back-channel discussions with PCB to persuade them to accept a hybrid hosting model. The cricketing body has reportedly emphasized that “no ICC tournament is possible without India taking part in it” and has urged PCB to refrain from making statements against India.

If agreed upon, India would play their matches in the UAE, while other fixtures would remain in Pakistan. The tournament schedule is anticipated shortly, with multiple reports suggesting it will run from February 19-29, 2025. The PCB’s draft reportedly slots India’s matches in Lahore, with the highly anticipated India-Pakistan clash proposed for March 1.

Champions Trophy 2025 Faces Challenges

The Champions Trophy’s 2025 edition is under threat due to ongoing tensions between the BCCI and PCB. Pakistan, awarded hosting rights, insists on hosting all matches domestically, while the BCCI has firmly stated that India will not tour Pakistan, citing security concerns.

This decision comes after PCB announced plans to take the trophy through Skardu, Hunza, and Muzaffarabad, all part of the disputed PoK region.

The PCB had shared on X: “The ICC Champions Trophy 2025 trophy tour kicks off in Islamabad on 16 November, also visiting scenic travel destinations like Skardu, Murree, Hunza, and Muzaffarabad. Catch a glimpse of the trophy which Sarfaraz Ahmed lifted in 2017 at The Oval, from 16-24 November.”

However, reports suggest that after the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) raised concerns, the ICC intervened and denied permission for the trophy tour in PoK.

India has already expressed hesitation to send its team to Pakistan for the 2025 Champions Trophy and communicated this stance to the ICC. In response, the PCB has written to the ICC, seeking clarification on India’s refusal and is now considering taking the matter to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) to ensure the tournament remains fully hosted in Pakistan.

No Back-Channel Diplomacy with India

Responding to questions about back-channel diplomacy regarding cricketing ties, Pakistan’s Foreign Office spokesperson, Mumtaz Zahra Baloch, clarified: “There is no back channel with India to specifically discuss the Champions Trophy and bilateral cricket between Pakistan and India.” She reiterated that “Pakistan has always said that sports should not be politicized.”

The PCB remains in touch with the ICC to finalize arrangements for the tournament, including participation from other nations. For further details, Baloch advised referring to the PCB.

</excerpt>

News is emerging regarding the issue surrounding the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy and that severe financial penalties may be accompanied by a PCB boycott based on India’s insistence to play at a neutral venue. As it has been specified by the ICC that Pakistan would host the Champions Trophy, the concerns for the participation of India have been widely in the media due to strained diplomatic ties.

The ICC has just confirmed this to the PCB in an official notice. The PCB Chairman, Mohsin Naqvi, has already said that Pakistan does not plan to opt for a hybrid model for the Champions Trophy. Meanwhile, reports state that Pakistan’s government is now weighing up the option of withdrawing itself totally from the tournament.

After boycotting the championship, as sources tell Cricbuzz, it will be risking not receiving the full hosting fee amounting to $65 million. On top of that, even the funding from the ICC will be reduced. “The act of the BCCI refusing to travel means the PCB cannot do much else but organize the event using a hybrid model,” sources said. According to PTI, if this model is finalized, ICC would ensure PCB gets the “full hosting fees” and that the chance of hosting “the majority of the matches” remains in the hands of PCB.

PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi has insisted the PCB version, however, while speaking at a press conference stated that there was no official communication from BCCI regarding any issue. * “We have a clear stance that they must give it to us in writing if they [the Indian cricket board] have any issues. Till today, we have not spoken about any hybrid model, but we’re ready to speak on this”* Naqvi remarked while adding that he is yet to receive any letter from the ICC or the BCCI.

Conversely, India has not traveled to Pakistan since the notorious 2008 Mumbai attacks and has only shared matches with this team in ICC events.
