ICC Suffered a Loss of Rs 167 Crores By Hosting T20 WC in USA; Learn More About This Massive Claim

July 18, 2024, 2:37 pm

The International Cricket Council (ICC) incurred losses of approximately USD 20 million (Rs 167 crore) from hosting the T20 World Cup 2024 games in the USA, as reported by PTI. This significant financial loss is expected to be a major topic of discussion during the ICC Annual Conference starting on Friday in Colombo. Although it is not part of the nine-point agenda of the Annual General Meeting (AGM), the issue will be addressed as a “post-event report.” The tournament, including the much-anticipated India-Pakistan match in New York, saw a substantial part of its schedule held in the USA.

Another significant topic for discussion during the AGM is the potential replacement of Greg Barclay as ICC chairman by BCCI secretary Jay Shah. According to the PTI report, ICC sources have expressed a keen interest in the timeline and process of Shah’s potential takeover.

“It is not about how but when, as he still has one year left as BCCI secretary before his cooling off period in the Indian board starts in 2025 as per the constitution. However, if he has to take over in 2025, then Barclay can’t complete his third term of two years from December 2024 to December 2026,” an ICC source explained.

There is speculation about potentially changing the ICC chairman’s term from three terms of two years each to two terms of three years, maintaining the cumulative six-year term.

If Barclay’s current term extends to three years, Shah could complete his six years as BCCI secretary and assume the ICC chairman role in 2025 during his cooling-off period from BCCI. This would allow him to serve as ICC chairman for three years and then return to the BCCI as president in 2028.

India Cricketers And Coaches To Meet PM Modi In Special ‘Champions’ Jersey With Two Stars

July 4, 2024, 12:02 pm

India’s T20 World Cup-winning cricketers wore a special ‘champions’ jersey to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday. The jersey, in orange and blue with ‘Champions’ written at the center, was specially designed for Team India’s meeting with PM Modi. It was the same jersey that the Indian team wore during the World Cup in the USA and Caribbean islands, with the only differences being the ‘champions’ on their chest and an extra star on top of the BCCI logo, denoting India’s two T20 World Cup trophies.

Previously, India’s T20I jersey had only one star for their victory in the inaugural edition in 2007. They added to that by winning their title after 17 years under Rohit Sharma’s leadership.

India wicketkeeper-batter Sanju Samson, who did not get to play a match in the tournament but was part of the 15-member team, shared the first glimpse of the special jersey on his social media handle.

The players were seen leaving the ITC Maurya Hotel wearing the same jersey to meet PM Modi. Notably, only the cricketers, the coaches, and the top BCCI officials went to meet the PM while the family members waited at the hotel.

Meet Prafull Billore: The Man Behind Viral ‘Panauti’ Memes in T20 World Cup

June 29, 2024, 1:28 pm

If you’re an active user of social media, you’ve likely encountered an Indian face plastered across photos of South African cricket players lately. These memes, dubbed ‘Panauti’ (bad luck), are spreading rapidly as India prepares for the IND vs. SA T20 World Cup final tonight. But who is this person, and why are Indians sharing his image so fervently? Have you seen him before?

Know About Him

The man behind these memes is none other than Prafull Billore, the founder of MBA Chaiwala. Billore is an Indian entrepreneur who gained fame through his unique tea-selling business, which has amassed a huge following on social media. Originally from Madhya Pradesh, Billore left an MBA program and started a tea stall with just Rs. 8,000 in 2017. His venture quickly expanded into a national chain and became a sensation on various social platforms.

The ‘Panauti’ trend took off after a viral selfie featuring cricketer Suryakumar Yadav. On June 21 this year, Billore shared a selfie taken with India’s versatile batsman during a flight on X (formerly Twitter). The following day, Yadav scored only 6 runs in India’s T20 match against Bangladesh, sparking playful speculation about Billore’s ‘Panauti’ effect. As the photo gained traction, comments were filled with jokes about Billore’s alleged bad luck affecting SKY’s performance.

https://twitter.com/pbillore141/status/1806282194010169633

Billore has now embraced a reverse jinx trend. Amid widespread trolling, he began sharing morphed images created by netizens, where he is seen alongside players from teams competing against India. Ahead of the India vs. England semifinal, he posted several such pictures featuring English cricketers like Jos Buttler and Jofra Archer in humorous poses, attempting to use his ‘jinx’ power against them.

Netizens have enthusiastically joined in on Billore’s reverse jinx antics, particularly after India’s resounding victory over England in the semifinals, triumphing by 68 runs in Guyana on Thursday.

‘Not Our Virat Kohli’ Fans React With Memes As His Struggles Continue In T20 World Cup Semi-Final

June 27, 2024, 11:55 pm

The ongoing lean patch of Virat Kohli persisted in the T20 World Cup 2024 as the former Indian captain was dismissed for just nine runs against England in the crucial semi-final match held in Guyana on Thursday, June 27. Kohli’s brief stay at the crease ended in the third over, highlighting his recent difficulties. The star batsman was bowled out by Reece Topley, who delivered a length ball that struck the top of the leg stump as Kohli attempted an aggressive shot down the track.

Despite hitting a six off a fuller-length delivery from Topley in the same over, Kohli’s attempt to replicate the big shot led to his downfall within the powerplay. This dismissal marked the first time Kohli failed to score a fifty in a T20 World Cup semi-final, a stark contrast to his previous performances where he scored 72 not out against South Africa in 2014, 85 not out against the West Indies in 2016, and 50 against England in 2022.

Kohli’s form in the T20 World Cup 2024 has been far from his best, managing only 74 runs in seven matches with just two scores above ten. Taking on the responsibility of opening the batting in this major tournament for the first time, Virat Kohli has struggled to strike the right balance between aggression and solidity. On a pitch in Guyana that offered some assistance to bowlers in the first six overs, Kohli appeared uncomfortable and was eventually undone by Topley.

This shift to an aggressive role at the top of the order has not yielded the desired results for Kohli, who is traditionally known for his consistent accumulation of runs. Fans expressed disappointment at the star batter’s performance in the high-stakes match at Providence Stadium, and questions are being raised about Kohli’s form, especially considering this could be his last T20 World Cup campaign for India.

In the semi-final clash, India faced further setbacks as Rishabh Pant was dismissed for four runs, leaving the team struggling with two wickets down in the powerplay. However, Suryakumar Yadav and Rohit Sharma provided some stability with a solid partnership before rain interrupted play at the end of the eighth over. The match remains tense as India looks to overcome these early challenges and secure a spot in the final.

T20 WC: Arshdeep Praises Bumrah For Bowling “Like a Video Game” Against Australia

June 26, 2024, 12:59 pm

Following India’s victory over Australia in the Super Eights ICC T20 World Cup clash, Indian pacer Arshdeep Singh and spinner Kuldeep Yadav shared insights on the team’s strategies. Arshdeep praised pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah, saying he bowled “like a video game.”

Rohit Sharma’s explosive 92, combined with effective spells from Arshdeep Singh, Jasprit Bumrah, and Kuldeep Yadav, as well as Axar Patel’s remarkable one-handed catch, secured a 24-run victory for India, earning them a spot in the semi-finals of the ongoing T20 World Cup.

In a video posted on the official Instagram handle of the Indian cricket team, Arshdeep asked Kuldeep about the challenges of bowling with and against the wind. Kuldeep responded, “It was difficult because automatically my ball comes in for the right-handed batter. Obviously, the righty was trying to target the left side. I was just reading the batsman and what he was expecting. As soon as I started the first over, I tried to put in a fuller ball, a flipper. I tried to put in a fuller ball because if he sweeps, there is a chance for us (for a wicket).”

Kuldeep continued, “Then I was throwing the wrong’un from there. So, he was confused that I was putting in two balls. I put in only two balls in the first over. Both of them were confused that I could put in a fuller or a wide wrong’un. So, firstly, this was the plan. Then, in the second over, obviously, the catch that Axar took was a really good catch. Maybe, from there, the game opened up for us.”

Arshdeep, who has taken 15 wickets in the tournament so far, commented on his effectiveness with the new ball. He credited Bumrah’s exceptional bowling for creating pressure on the batters, which in turn helped him take wickets. “I do not think there is anything difficult about that at this time (bowling with new ball). Because Jassi is bowling like a video game, with an economy rate of just two or three runs. Whatever pressure the batter feels, he takes it out on me. He plays high-risk shots, I get a lot of wickets through them,” Arshdeep said.

He added, “I will say that he gets a lot of credit. All the other bowlers are very big in the partnership. They stop runs from one end and get wickets from the other end. I guess as a bowling unit, everyone is clicking very well.”

Rohit’s 92 helped India post 205/5 on the board, and they restricted Australia to 181/7 in their 20 overs despite Travis Head’s aggressive 76 off 43 balls, featuring nine fours and four sixes. With Bangladesh’s loss to Afghanistan, Australia was eliminated from the tournament, managing only one win and suffering two losses in the Super Eights, including one to Afghanistan.

India will face England in the semifinals in Guyana on Thursday.

T20 World Cup: Andre Russell Overtakes Dwayne Bravo As West Indies’ Highest Wicket-Taker

June 24, 2024, 6:45 pm

During the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 Super 8 encounter against South Africa, West Indies all-rounder Andre Russell surpassed former cricketer Dwayne Bravo to become the highest wicket-taker for the Caribbeans in the history of the T20 WC.

In a display of resilience, Marco Jansen and Kagiso Rabada led South Africa to an unbeaten streak of seven matches in the ongoing ICC T20 World Cup, securing a spot in the semifinals with a three-wicket victory over West Indies at Antigua.

Russell delivered an impressive performance against South Africa, claiming two wickets in his four-over spell, conceding 19 runs. This achievement elevated his total wicket count in T20 WC history to 29, surpassing Bravo’s previous record of 27 wickets.

The match saw South Africa winning the toss and opting to bowl first. Despite a shaky start for West Indies at 5/2, an 81-run partnership between Kyle Mayers and Roston Chase brought them back into contention. However, South African bowlers, led by Tabraiz Shamsi’s 3/27, kept chipping away at West Indies’ batting lineup, limiting them to 135/8 in 20 overs.

In the chase of 136 runs, South Africa faced early setbacks but ultimately reached the revised target of 123 runs in 17 overs due to rain interruptions. Key contributions from Tristan Stubbs and Heinrich Klaasen were pivotal as Jansen and Rabada sealed the win with five balls to spare.

South Africa’s victory marked the end of their Super Eights campaign with an undefeated record, securing a place in the semifinals alongside England. Meanwhile, West Indies, the tournament hosts, bowed out with just one win and two losses in the Super Eights.

“Lot of Relief to Reach Semifinals”: SA Skipper Aiden Markram After T20 WC Super 8 Victory

June 24, 2024, 1:05 pm

After securing their spot in the semifinals of the ICC T20 World Cup 2024, South Africa’s captain Aiden Markram shared his thoughts on reaching the next stage of the prestigious event on Monday.

In a display of composure and resilience, Marco Jansen and Kagiso Rabada withstood impressive spells by Roston Chase and Alzarri Joseph, maintaining their unbeaten streak in the ongoing ICC T20 World Cup with a three-wicket victory over West Indies in Antigua on Monday.

This triumph ensured South Africa concluded their Super Eights campaign undefeated, winning all three of their matches. England also advanced to the semifinals with two wins and one loss. Unfortunately, the host nation, West Indies, was eliminated, managing only one win and two losses in the Super Eights.

Markram praised his bowlers for their performance in assessing the conditions and keeping the opposition to a modest total. “A lot of relief to get through to the semifinal. We would have liked it to be a lot more convincing. The wicket was playing nicely after the rain break but we tried to kill the game too early. It put us in a tricky position but happy to get over the line. We bowled really well, assessed conditions and kept them to a sub-par total. We could have built a partnership after the break and then taken it from there, we will take that learning and hopefully not make the same mistake again,” Markram said during the post-match presentation.

He further commended his team, stating that both their bowlers and batters were performing well. “We picked Shamsi to have a mystery spinner against them and immediately saw it spinning, so we wanted to bowl as much spin as we could. If it wouldn’t spin that much then we would have used our pacers, not a lot of times when KG bowls only 2 overs. We have been doing really well, the bowling unit is firing and as a batting unit, it is about when to take the game on. We need to be smart in those situations. I haven’t been following but whoever it might be we have to put our best foot forward,” the 29-year-old added.

In the match, South Africa won the toss and opted to bowl first. The West Indies were reduced to 5/2 early on, but an 81-run partnership between Kyle Mayers (35 in 34 balls with three fours and two sixes) and Roston Chase (52 in 42 balls, with three fours and two sixes) revived their innings. Nevertheless, South Africa’s bowlers struck regularly, limiting the West Indies to 135/8 in their 20 overs. Tabraiz Shamsi (3/27) was the standout bowler for South Africa, with Marco Jansen, captain Aiden Markram, Keshav Maharaj, and Kagiso Rabada each taking a wicket.

Chasing a revised target of 123 runs in 17 overs due to rain, South Africa lost early wickets but managed to keep the match balanced. Despite crucial contributions from Tristan Stubbs (29 in 27 balls, with four boundaries) and Heinrich Klaasen (22 in 10 balls, with three fours and a six), they found themselves at 110/7 in 15.2 overs. However, Jansen (21*) and Rabada (5*) hit vital boundaries, completing the chase with five balls and three wickets remaining.

Roston Chase (3/12) was the best bowler for the West Indies, with Alzarri Joseph and Andre Russell each taking two wickets. This victory confirmed South Africa’s undefeated record in the Super Eights, while England advanced to the semifinals with two wins and a loss, and the West Indies were knocked out with one win and two losses.

Will Sanju Samson Replace Shivam Dube In India’s Lineup Against Bangladesh?

June 22, 2024, 4:24 pm

India may consider changes to their playing XI for the second Super 8 match against Bangladesh in the T20 World Cup 2024, scheduled for Saturday in Antigua. A win against Bangladesh would virtually secure India’s spot in the semi-finals, following their victory over Afghanistan in the first Group 1 match.

Despite a convincing 47-run win over Afghanistan on Thursday, India faced initial challenges when openers Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli failed to make significant contributions once again. Rishabh Pant and Shivan Dube made modest scores of 20 and 10 respectively, before Suryakumar Yadav’s 53 and Hardik Pandya’s crucial 32 stabilized the innings.

India’s bowlers, led by Arshdeep Singh and Jasprit Bumrah with three wickets each, ensured a comfortable victory.

Batting remains a concern for India, as highlighted by their recent matches against USA and Afghanistan, where Suryakumar Yadav’s half-centuries rescued them after top and middle-order failures.

Despite this, India’s batting coach Vikram Rathour confirmed that Virat Kohli, who has scored only 29 runs in four matches, will continue to open for India. Consequently, Yashasvi Jaiswal is expected to remain on the bench.

“Obviously we want him to score but even when he hasn’t, the others have chipped in, which is a good sign. But Virat stays at the top of the order and we know he will get the runs,” Rathour said on the eve of India’s match.

However, the main concern for India is that captain Rohit Sharma is currently struggling with form.

Regarding the middle order, there have been suggestions to replace Shivam Dube with Sanju Samson to strengthen the batting. This is an area where many anticipate India might make a change. However, Dube, batting at No. 5, is expected to retain his role as a finisher, whereas Samson typically opens or bats higher up the order. This could once again work in Dube’s favor.

Apart from this potential change, India is likely to maintain the rest of their lineup from the Afghanistan match. They already made one alteration in that game by replacing Mohammed Siraj with spinner Kuldeep Yadav to suit the spin-friendly conditions in West India. The Indian team is expected to stick with the same bowling attack, which includes two left-arm spinners, Ravindra Jadeja and Axar Patel.

India likely XI: Rohit Sharma (c), Virat Kohli, Rishabh Pant (wk), Suryakumar Yadav, Shivam Dube, Hardik Pandya, Ravindra Jadeja, Axar Patel, Kuldeep Yadav, Arshdeep Singh, Jasprit Bumrah

Bangladesh likely XI: Tanzid Hasan, Litton Das (wk), Najmul Hossain Shanto (c), Shakib Al Hasan, Towhid Hridoy, Mahmudullah, Mahedi Hasan, Rishad Hossain, Taskin Ahmed, Tanzim Hasan Sakib, Mustafizur Rahman

Anand Mahindra On Pakistan’s ICC T20 World Cup Exit: “Truly Cruel…”

June 15, 2024, 7:11 pm

The US team on Friday, June 15, advanced past the group stage of the T20 World Cup after their match against Ireland was called off due to heavy rains in Lauderhill. This result eliminated former champions Pakistan from the tournament. The match was highly anticipated, as Pakistan’s fate hinged on its outcome. The washout resulted in both the US and Ireland receiving one point each. The US concluded the group stage with five points from four games, while Pakistan, even if they win their final match against Ireland, can only achieve a maximum of four points.

The likelihood of the match proceeding on Friday was always low, as Florida, where Lauderhill is located, had been experiencing a tropical thunderstorm, causing continuous rain and flash flooding.

Anand Mahindra on Pakistan’s elimination from ICC T20 World Cup

Pakistan’s elimination from the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 due to the abandonment of the US-Ireland match sparked mixed reactions online. Anand Mahindra, chairman of the Anand Group, described Pakistan’s exit as “truly cruel.”

In a post on X, formerly Twitter, “That is truly cruel. It’s much more fun to drown Pakistan out in a fair game than to have them drowned out by rain… (Angrezi shayari ki meri koshish),” wrote Mahindra.

Mahindra later retweeted a comment from content creator Himanshu Baria. “In short – “Baarish tune kyu dhoya..hum the naa..!!??”,” Baria had replied to Mahindra’s post.

T20 World Cup: How Pakistan went down

Pakistan narrowly lost to India in New York on Sunday, failing to chase a target of 120. Earlier, in their opening game in Dallas, they suffered a surprising Super Over loss to the USA. The USA started the tournament with a convincing win over Canada, chasing nearly 200 runs, and pulled off one of the T20 World Cup’s greatest upsets by defeating Pakistan.

Ex-Pakistani cricketer Kamran Akmal has apologized to Harbhajan Singh and the Sikh community for his public remarks on Indian pacer Arshdeep Singh on Monday.

While covering the show on India-Pakistan ICC T20 world cup match on ARY news, he commented on Arshdeep’s religion saying, ‘Kuch bhi ho sakta hai… 12 baj gaye hai (Anything can happen. It is already 12).’

As a result, it triggered a widespread outrage among people, also angering former indian spinner Harbhajan Singh, who later slammed Akmal.

Taking to X, he said,

‘Lakh di laanat tere Kamraan Akhmal.. You should know the history of Sikhs before you open your filthy mouth. We Sikhs saved your mothers and sisters when they were abducted by invaders, the time invariably was 12 o’clock. Shame on you…Have some Gratitude.’

Meanwhile, maintaining their winning streak against Pakistan India has won the match, despite setting a low score for the former.

During the match, star opener Virat Kohli (4) and Rohit Sharma (13), weren’t able to score big. But in the middle of the innings, the partnership between Rishabh Pant along with Axar Patel, managed to stabilize the team after scary start.

However, the lower middle order unfortunately succumbed to pressure for scoring runs on unpredictable New York’s pitch.

Due to Haris Rauf (3/21), Naseem Shah (3/21) and Mohammed Amir’s exceptional bowling, they restricted India to 119 in just 19 overs.

In the second innings, Pakistan made a great start, with Mohammad Rizwan scoring 31 runs off 44 balls, including a boundary and a six, also anchoring one end firmly. However, the momentum shifted with the arrival of Jasprit Bumrah, who took 3 wickets for 14 runs, and Hardik Pandya, who claimed 2 wickets for 24 runs. This resulted in the crucial dismissals of captain Babar Azam (13), Fakhar Zaman (13), Shadab Khan (4), and Iftikhar Ahmed (5).

Despite Naseem Shah’s persistent efforts, Arshdeep Singh’s contribution ensured that India successfully defended its low score.

Hardik Pandya’s Celebration Goes Viral After Dismissing Pakistan Star: Internet Abuzz

June 10, 2024, 11:08 am

In a remarkable display of skill and determination, the Indian cricket team achieved the improbable feat of defending a modest target of 120 runs against arch-rivals Pakistan in the T20 World Cup, clinching a memorable victory. This victory marks the second-lowest target successfully defended against Pakistan in T20I history and also stands as India’s lowest successful defense in a T20I match.

Chasing 120, Pakistan began their innings on a strong note but faltered along the way, eventually falling short by six runs. Jasprit Bumrah emerged as the hero for India, claiming three crucial wickets, while Hardik Pandya’s timely contributions, including the dismissals of Fakhar Zaman and Shadab Khan, tilted the match in India’s favor.

The Indian bowling unit, led by the exceptional performance of Jasprit Bumrah, collectively delivered an outstanding performance, propelling their team to a thrilling victory over Pakistan in a low-scoring encounter in New York.

Bumrah, with figures of 3/14, and Hardik Pandya’s, with 2/24, proved to be unyielding as they defended the modest total of 120, restricting Pakistan to 113/7.

Earlier, Pakistan’s pacers Naseem Shah and Mohammad Amir showcased impressive spells, exploiting the slightly two-paced pitch to bowl out India for 119 after a couple of rain interruptions. Shah claimed three wickets for 21 runs, while Amir accounted for two wickets conceding 23 runs.

Despite the challenging conditions, Rishabh Pant’s aggressive innings of 42 runs off 31 balls, embellished with six boundaries, provided India with some momentum.

Brief Scores:
India: 119 all out in 19 overs (Rishabh Pant 42, Axar Patel 20; Naseem Shah 3/21, Mohammad Amir 2/23)
Pakistan: 113/7 in 20 overs (Mohammad Rizwan 31; Hardik Pandya 2/24, Jasprit Bumrah 3/14)

Result: India won by six runs.

ICC T20 World Cup 2024: Ind vs Pak, ‘Kohli Will Have To…’ Kaif’s Strike-Rate Advice For Virat

June 8, 2024, 7:48 pm

With the ICC T20 World Cup clash between arch-rivals India and Pakistan looming large, former Indian cricketer Mohammad Kaif has offered crucial advice for star batter Virat Kohli. In an interview with Star Sports, Kaif stressed the importance of Kohli adjusting his strike rate for the highly anticipated match set to take place in New York.

Kaif’s insights come in the wake of India’s impressive victory over Ireland, which has bolstered the team’s confidence and momentum. Meanwhile, Pakistan will be eager to bounce back from their defeat to co-hosts and World Cup debutants, the USA, by securing a win against their longstanding rivals.

Speaking on Kohli’s formidable presence on the field, Kaif acknowledged the threat he poses to every team. However, he emphasized the need for Kohli to temper his aggression, particularly against Pakistan. Kaif pointed out Kohli’s recent performance against Ireland, where he scored just one run off five balls after stepping out of his crease to play a big shot.

Highlighting Kohli’s stellar form in the IPL, where he scored an impressive 741 runs in 15 innings for Royal Challengers Bangalore, Kaif suggested a more conservative approach to batting. He advised Kohli to aim for a strike rate of around 130, instead of the usual 140-150, and to exercise patience, waiting for bad balls to capitalize on.

Furthermore, Kaif recommended Kohli’s ideal batting position at number three, especially on challenging pitches. He cited Kohli’s impressive track record at number three in T20Is, where he has scored 3,076 runs at an average of 53.96 and a strike rate of 135.26, with 32 half-centuries.

As both teams gear up for what promises to be a fiercely contested ICC T20 World Cup match, Kohli’s performance will undoubtedly be under scrutiny. With Kaif’s valuable advice in mind, Kohli will aim to lead India to victory and maintain their winning streak in the tournament.

Jasprit Bumrah Surpasses Bhuvneshwar Kumar’s T20I Record

June 6, 2024, 2:35 am

Jasprit Bumrah made a stunning start to his T20 World Cup 2024 campaign in the Group A clash against Ireland at the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium in New York on Wednesday.

His exceptional skills were on display, setting a new standard in T20Is. Bumrah’s bowling prowess troubled the Irish batsmen throughout the match.

Choosing to field first after winning the toss, Rohit Sharma introduced Bumrah into the attack in the fifth over, which resulted in a maiden. With this, he surpassed Bhuvneshwar Kumar’s world record for the most maidens bowled by a player from a Test-playing nation in T20 Internationals.

— Star Sports (@StarSportsIndia) June 5, 2024

Bumrah’s achievement brings his tally of maidens in T20Is to 11, setting a new standard for bowlers from full member nations in the shortest format of international cricket.
Only two bowlers have bowled more maidens than Bumrah in international T20s: Frank Nsubuga from Uganda with 15 and Shem Ngoche from Kenya with 14.

India’s fast bowlers dominated on a pitch offering unpredictable bounce and seam movement, limiting Ireland to a mere 96 runs in their opening T20 World Cup match.
Arshdeep Singh (2/35 in 4 overs), Mohammed Siraj (1/13 in 3 overs), Jasprit Bumrah (2/6 in 3 overs), and Hardik Pandya (3/27 in 4 overs) left no room for the Irish batters, who struggled against the swing, seam, and extra bounce generated by the four-pronged attack during 14 of the 16 overs they bowled.

Would Love to Coach Indian Team, There Is No Bigger Honour…”: Gautam Gambhir

June 3, 2024, 5:31 am

Amidst speculation surrounding India’s new head coach, former cricketer Gautam Gambhir expressed his willingness to take on the role, considering it an “honour” to coach the Indian cricket team. With Rahul Dravid’s tenure as head coach nearing its end after the conclusion of the T20 World Cup 2024 in June, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is evaluating potential candidates.

During an event at Medeor Hospital in Abu Dhabi, Gambhir interacted with students, where one of them inquired about his interest in coaching the Indian team and guiding them to World Cup victory. Gambhir responded enthusiastically, expressing his desire to coach the national team, emphasizing the honour it entails in representing the vast Indian population.

As India prepares to commence their T20 World Cup campaign against Ireland on June 5 in New York, Gambhir believes that winning the World Cup is a collective effort, requiring support from every Indian, both on and off the field. He emphasized the importance of fearlessness and unity in achieving success.

During his visit to the UAE, Gambhir engaged with young cricket enthusiasts and shared insights from his illustrious career. Praised for his recent success as the mentor of Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), Gambhir emphasized the significance of fostering a secure and harmonious team environment, attributing KKR’s triumph in the IPL to this ethos.

Gambhir also imparted valuable advice on sportsmanship, emphasizing the values of hard work, discipline, and treating one’s team as a family. He highlighted the importance of fairness and unity in cricket, emphasizing that success is a collective endeavor.

Gambhir’s interaction was part of a special event aimed at inspiring young athletes and showcasing the sports medicine services offered by Medeor Hospital. Safeer Ahamed, Group COO of Burjeel Holdings, accompanied Gambhir during the visit, providing insights into the group’s initiatives to promote sports and well-being.

Is Gautam Gambhir’s ‘Next Mission’ Team India or Kolkata Knight Riders?

May 29, 2024, 7:43 pm

The question of whether Gautam Gambhir will succeed Rahul Dravid as the head coach of the Indian Cricket team is currently the biggest query in Indian cricket. Dravid’s tenure ends with the 2024 T20 World Cup, and his successor, according to a press release by BCCI, will take over from July 1. However, there has been almost complete silence on who all have applied for the top role. Going by BCCI secretary Jay Shah’s statement, an Indian is likely to be at the helm.

Several reports have claimed that Gambhir is one of the front-runners for the post but in a recent interview, after he mentored KKR to IPL 2024 title, he indicated something unique. He was asked about KKR now being a ‘trophy-winning dressing room’.

“Today you are saying this because we have won our third trophy. But if you ask me, we are still two trophies away from MI and CSK. Today I am content, but again that hunger (is there) that you are still not the most successful team in the IPL, for that to happen you need to win the IPL three more times, which will require a lot of hard work. So I think, the next mission is that if we can make KKR the most successful team in the IPL. There won’t be any bigger feelings for me. But the journey abhi shuru hui hai (the journey has just started),” Gautam Gambhir said on Sportskeeda.

The official deadline for application submission for the post of Indian cricket team coach selection is over. Monday was the last date to submit the Google Sheets to be the next India coach.

A report in Cricbuzz gave details of what might be happening in the background. It claimed that a “very high-profile owner of an IPL franchise, who is very close to the BCCI top brass” told the publication that former India star’s appointment as Indian cricket team coach is a “done deal and the announcement will come soon”. It also said that a “high profile commentator” told them that serious efforts are being made to rope in the KKR mentor.

However, the report also added that since there has been no official announcement, it points to the fact that negotiations are still on multiple fronts — “between the two parties and, perhaps, with some others too.”

BCCI secretary Jay Shah last week rejected claims that the Board has approached any former Australian cricketer to be India’s next head coach and hinted that Rahul Dravid’s successor could be an Indian by saying that he should have a “deep understanding” of the game’s structure in the country.

Rinku Singh on His Exclusion from T20 WC: “Couldn’t Get Selected Because…”

May 29, 2024, 6:29 pm

The decision made by the Indian cricket team selectors to omit Rinku Singh from the T20 World Cup 2024 squad sparked widespread criticism from fans and experts alike. Despite this, the BCCI opted for Shivam Dube and Axar Patel as all-rounder options, with Rinku finding a place in the reserves instead. Rinku’s lacklustre IPL campaign, where he had limited opportunities to bat and managed only 168 runs, likely influenced this decision. However, Kolkata Knight Riders’ triumph in the competition shifted the focus, and Rinku has since spoken out about his exclusion from the World Cup squad.

In a recent interview, Rinku attributed his omission to team composition and shared details of a conversation he had with skipper Rohit Sharma regarding the decision. He expressed initial disappointment but emphasized the importance of accepting outcomes beyond one’s control. Recounting Rohit’s words of encouragement, Rinku revealed that the skipper advised him to maintain focus and continue working hard, reassuring him of future opportunities.

Following Kolkata Knight Riders’ convincing victory over Sunrisers Hyderabad in the IPL 2024 final, securing their third IPL title, Rinku expressed elation. Reflecting on the win, he described it as a realization of a long-held dream and credited the team’s success to coach GG’s guidance. Rinku attributed the victory to divine intervention, stating, “It was God’s plan.”

ICC Men’s T20 World Cup: Format, Groups, Teams, Rules and Previous Winners

May 29, 2024, 3:05 pm

ICC T20 World Cup 2024: As the 2024 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup approaches, anticipation builds for cricket enthusiasts worldwide. Hosted in the United States and the West Indies, this edition promises to be an exhilarating spectacle, featuring a record number of participating teams. Here’s a detailed guide to the ninth instalment of this prestigious 20-over tournament.

Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 Schedule and Start Date

The tournament kicks off on June 2 at 06:00 IST with hosts United States facing Canada in Texas. Matches will also be held in the Caribbean. The initial 20-team group stage, comprising four groups of five, runs until June 18, featuring daily fixtures. Subsequently, the Super 8s commence, with two matches most days until June 25, leading to the semi-finals on June 27. The grand finale, the final, is set for Saturday, June 29, at 20:00 IST in Barbados.

Format for the 2024 Men’s T20 World Cup

This year’s tournament, the largest yet with 20 teams, reverts to an older format. All teams compete from the outset in a group stage, playing four games each, with the top two advancing to the Super 8s. The Super 8s, held exclusively in the Caribbean, feature two groups of four, with eight seeded teams to streamline planning and scheduling. Advancing teams are allocated to Groups 1 or 2 based on seeding, not group stage performance. In the Super 8s, the top two teams from each group progress to the semi-finals, with group winners facing runners-up from the other pool. Teams earn two points for a win, one for a no result, and none for a loss, with no ties in T20 cricket.

Competing Teams in the 2024 Men’s T20 World Cup

The expanded event sees the participation of most major cricketing nations. The only Test-playing nation not to qualify is Zimbabwe, who missed out in their qualifier tournament. The 20 teams are divided into four groups for the initial phase.

– Group A: Canada, India (A1), Ireland, Pakistan (A2), USA
– Group B: Australia (B2), England (B1), Namibia, Oman, Scotland
– Group C: Afghanistan, New Zealand (C1), Papua New Guinea, Uganda, West Indies (C2)
– Group D: Bangladesh, Nepal, Netherlands, South Africa (D1), Sri Lanka (D2)

Venues and Stadiums for the 2024 T20 World Cup

The tournament marks cricket’s inaugural major global event in the United States, with 16 of 55 matches scheduled there. Matches will be held in Florida, New York, and Texas. New York’s stadium, specifically constructed for the event, features a pitch imported from Adelaide and temporary seating. In the Caribbean, matches will take place in Antigua & Barbuda, Barbados, Guyana, Saint Lucia, St. Vincent & the Grenadines, and Trinidad & Tobago.

Rules for the 2024 Men’s T20 World Cup

Matches adhere to the T20 format, with each team playing 20 overs, unless they’re dismissed earlier or the chasing team reaches the target. Innings commence with a six-over powerplay, incorporating specific fielding restrictions. Matches aim to conclude within three hours and 10 minutes, with innings lasting one hour and 25 minutes each, separated by a 20-minute interval. This tournament introduces the ‘stop-clock’, mandating the bowling side to commence each over within 60 seconds of the previous one ending. Teams have two unsuccessful reviews per inning. In the event of tied scores after 20 overs, a super over determines the winner, continuing until a victor emerges. The minimum overs for a result increase from five to ten in the semi-finals and final. The Duckworth-Lewis Stern method applies if a match is impacted by weather. The first semi-final and final have reserve days, while the second semi-final includes an additional 250-minute time allowance.

Previous Men’s T20 World Cup Winners

The tournament has witnessed six different champions across eight editions:

– 2007: India
– 2009: Pakistan
– 2010: England

– 2014: Sri Lanka
– 2016: West Indies
– 2021: Australia

India T20 World Cup 2024: Schedule, Date, Time, Venues

May 29, 2024, 2:49 pm

ICC T20 World Cup 2024: Following the conclusion of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024, Team India gears up for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, jointly hosted by the United States of America (USA) and West Indies in June.

India, vying for their first title since 2007, is placed in Group A alongside Canada, Ireland, USA, and Pakistan. Their campaign kicks off with a clash against Ireland at the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium in New York on June 5. Just four days later, they face Pakistan at the same venue.

A significant encounter against co-hosts USA awaits India on June 12 in New York, followed by their final group stage match against Canada at the Central Broward Park & Broward County Stadium on June 15.

The schedule for India’s T20 World Cup 2024 campaign includes:

1. June 5, 2024: India vs Ireland at 8:00 PM IST in New York.
2. June 9, 2024: India vs Pakistan at 8:00 PM IST in New York.
3. June 12, 2024: USA vs India at 8:00 PM IST in New York.
4. June 15, 2024: India vs Canada at 8:00 PM IST in Florida.

Team India’s squad for the T20 World Cup: Rohit Sharma (c), Hardik Pandya (vc), Yashasvi Jaiswal, Virat Kohli, Suryakumar Yadav, Rishabh Pant, Sanju Samson, Shivam Dube, Ravindra Jadeja, Axar Patel, Kuldeep Yadav, Yuzvendra Chahal, Arshdeep Singh, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammad Siraj.

T20 World Cup 2024: India Allotted Second Semifinal Match for T20 WC, to Get No Reserve Day

May 29, 2024, 2:37 pm

If India advances to the knockout stage of the ICC T20 World Cup, they are slated to contest the second semifinal on June 27 in Providence, Guyana, as revealed by ESPNCricinfo. The decision to assign India the Guyana semifinal likely revolves around scheduling logistics, as the first semifinal in Tarouba, Trinidad, is a night match on June 26 at 8:30 PM local time. Conversely, the Guyana semifinal will commence at 10:30 AM local time, translating to a prime-time slot of 8 PM in Indian Standard Time.

The final, scheduled for June 29 in Bridgetown, Barbados, will kick off at 10 AM local time, corresponding to 7:30 PM in India, according to ESPNCricinfo. Notably, there is no reserve day allocated for the second semifinal. However, the match will receive an additional 250 minutes of playing time compared to the 190 minutes allocated for the first semifinal and final, both of which have reserve days.

The decision to extend the duration of the second semifinal stems from the absence of reserve days in the tournament schedule. Allocating a reserve day for the second semifinal would have resulted in only one day’s rest and practice time between that match and the final. Therefore, any implications of persistent rain during the second semifinal can only be determined if both teams bat for a minimum of 10 overs.

In line with standard T20 regulations, teams batting second must complete at least five overs to reach a result. However, in knockout matches such as those in the ICC T20 World Cup, teams batting second must face a minimum of 10 overs to determine a result, following the Duckworth-Lewis method. This rule was also in effect during the knockout matches of the 2022 T20 World Cup in Australia.

India finds itself in Group A of the ICC tournament alongside arch-rivals Pakistan, Ireland, Canada, and co-hosts USA. India will kick off their T20 World Cup campaign against Ireland on June 5 at the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium, New York, followed by a high-profile encounter against Pakistan on June 9 at the same venue. Subsequently, India will face off against the USA and Canada on June 12 and 15, respectively.

The Indian squad features Rohit Sharma as captain, with Hardik Pandya as vice-captain. Notable players include Yashasvi Jaiswal, Virat Kohli, Suryakumar Yadav, and Rishabh Pant, among others, with reserves comprising Shubman Gill, Rinku Singh, Khaleel Ahmed, and Avesh Khan.

T20 World Cup 2024: Defending Champions England Look Dodgy, Inconsistent Ahead of World Cup Campaign

May 29, 2024, 2:28 pm

England, the reigning champions of the ICC T20 World Cup, faces challenges as they prepare to defend their title in the West Indies and USA starting June 1. Placed in Group B with rivals Australia, Scotland, Namibia, and Oman, England’s campaign begins against Scotland on June 4. However, their recent T20I series record hasn’t been stellar since their 2022 triumph in Australia.

The tour of Bangladesh in March 2023 ended disastrously for England in the T20 format, as they were whitewashed despite earlier winning the ODI series. Against New Zealand in August to September 2023, the series ended in a draw, showcasing mixed performances. The West Indies tour in December 2023 revealed England’s inconsistency, despite notable individual performances.

Ahead of the tournament, key talking points for England include Jos Buttler’s impressive form in international and domestic cricket, along with Phil Salt’s explosive batting. However, the poor form of Sam Curran, the reigning ‘Player of the Tournament’ from the 2022 T20 World Cup, raises concerns.

Additionally, the return of players like Jofra Archer and Harry Brook after significant breaks adds intrigue to England’s lineup. Despite challenges, England boasts top performers in T20Is since their last World Cup win, including Buttler, Salt, Adil Rashid, Liam Livingstone, and Rehan Ahmed. These players will be crucial in England’s quest to retain their T20 World Cup title.

Kohli and Jaiswal Should Open in T20 World Cup 2024: Wasim Jaffer

May 29, 2024, 2:20 pm

Former India cricketer Wasim Jaffer suggests that Virat Kohli and Yashasvi Jaiswal should open for India in the upcoming T20 World Cup 2024, with Rohit Sharma and Suryakumar Yadav following in the batting order. Jaffer praises Rohit’s ability to handle spin, advocating for him to bat at number four.

India’s T20 World Cup campaign begins on June 5 against Ireland at the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium in New York. The highly anticipated India-Pakistan match is scheduled for June 9, followed by matches against tournament co-hosts USA and Canada on June 12 and 15, respectively.

India aims to break their ICC trophy drought, last winning the ICC Champions Trophy in 2013. Despite several strong performances in various ICC events, including reaching the T20 World Cup final in 2014, India has not secured a major ICC trophy since 2013.

The Indian squad for the T20 World Cup includes Rohit Sharma as captain, with Hardik Pandya as vice-captain. Other key players include Yashasvi Jaiswal, Virat Kohli, Suryakumar Yadav, Rishabh Pant, and Jasprit Bumrah. Reserves include Shubman Gill, Rinku Singh, Khaleel Ahmed, and Avesh Khan.

T20 WC Records That Could Be Broken During Upcoming Edition in USA, West Indies

May 29, 2024, 2:03 pm

T20 WC 2024: The ICC T20 World Cup has seen numerous record-breaking moments, etching the names of cricketing legends in history. As teams assemble for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in the USA and Caribbean, beginning on June 1, this edition promises to be historic with 20 teams competing. Let’s explore some records that could be shattered in this tournament:

1. Most Fours:
Virat Kohli trails behind Sri Lanka’s Mahela Jayawardena in most fours scored in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, with 103 to Jayawardena’s 111. Kohli, already holding the record for the highest run tally, aims to add another accolade to his name. Rohit Sharma and David Warner also eye the top spot.

2. Fastest Hundred (by balls):
Chris Gayle holds the top two spots for the fastest centuries in the Men’s T20 World Cup, with 47 and 50-ball centuries. However, with Nepal’s Jan Nicol Loftie-Eaton setting a 33-ball T20 century record this year, this record could be in jeopardy due to the expanded teams and high strike rates.

3. Most catches by a fielder:
AB de Villiers leads with 23 catches, followed by David Warner with 21. Warner, alongside Rohit Sharma and Glenn Maxwell, aims to secure the top spot as they compete in another T20 World Cup.

4. First team to win all ICC Trophies concurrently:
Australia, led by Pat Cummins, could make history by winning the T20 World Cup and holding all ICC Trophies simultaneously. Additionally, Australia is the defending champion in various ICC events, including the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup and ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup.

5. Most Runs in a single edition:
With an expanded tournament featuring 20 teams, teams may play up to nine matches. This could challenge the record of most runs in a single edition, currently held by Virat Kohli, who scored 319 runs in the 2014 edition.

Shahid Afridi Reveals One Thing “That Bothers Him” About Pakistan Team Ahead of T20 WC

May 25, 2024, 11:38 pm

On Saturday, former Pakistan all-rounder Shahid Afridi underscored the need for the national men’s team to enhance its strike rate during the middle overs to bolster its chances in the upcoming ICC T20 World Cup, set to commence from June 1 in the West Indies and USA. Pakistan, grouped with arch-rivals India, Ireland, USA, and Canada in Group A, will kick off their campaign against the USA on June 6, followed by a much-anticipated clash against India at New York’s Nassau County International Cricket Stadium.

Afridi stressed the importance of Pakistan aiming for eight to nine runs per over during the crucial seven to thirteen over phase. He expressed optimism about Pakistan’s prospects while acknowledging the significance of captain Babar Azam leading by example. While refraining from singling out a specific player for success, Afridi emphasized Azam’s pivotal role and urged him to deliver both on the field and in decision-making.

Babar Azam, having led Pakistan in 80 T20I matches, boasts a winning record of 46 victories, 26 losses, with seven matches ending in no result, reflecting a commendable winning percentage of 57.50. Additionally, Azam ranks as the third-highest run-scorer in T20Is, amassing 3,955 runs at an impressive average of 41.19 and a strike rate of 129.97, with three centuries and 36 fifties.

In other cricketing news, Pakistan is currently facing England in the second T20I of a four-match series at Birmingham, following the abandonment of the first match due to rain. Meanwhile, Pakistan announced their 15-player squad for the T20 World Cup 2024, with Babar Azam leading the team, and unveiled the player support personnel for the marquee event, including head coach Gary Kirsten and assistant coach Azhar Mahmood.
