They facilitated risky journeys through multiple countries and handled hawala transfers to Latin America. Investigation in the case continues.
</excerpt>

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has apprehended two main individuals suspected of being involved in human trafficking to the United States through the notorious ‘dunki’ route, officials reported on Saturday.

According to them, these arrests followed raids at separate locations in Himachal Pradesh and Delhi.

Identified as Sunny alias Sunny Donker from Dharamshala in Kangra district of Himachal Pradesh, and Shubham Sandhal alias Deep Hundi from Ropar, Punjab who had been living in Peeragarhi, Outer Delhi, the two were arrested on Friday, the NIA said in its release.

The investigating agency characterized both of them as close friends of Gagandeep Singh alias Goldy, who had been arrested in March.

Gagandeep’s arrest came after a victim, who was smuggled into the US via the dunki route and later deported back to India in February, filed a complaint.

The word ‘dunki’, thought to be derived from ‘donkey’, refers to illegal and treacherous paths that migrants use to enter nations such as the United States without proper papers.

The agency reported that this hazardous and tiresome journey is usually organized by human trafficking rings. “Their victims were physically and mentally harassed during the journey by the donkers and agents intent on making extra money,” it added.

The NIA described Shubham Sandhal as an important hawala courier, who assisted in routing money to donkers in Latin America.

The agency further stated that Gagandeep depended on him to remit shares of the money taken from the victims to these donkers deployed in Latin American nations.

Taking over the investigation from Punjab Police on March 13, 2025, the NIA is still investigating the case, the statement further said.

Earlier, the NIA had charged a chargesheet against Gagandeep Singh, a Tilak Nagar resident in Delhi, on June 27.

Their investigation found that Gagandeep took around Rs. 45 lakh from every visitor, promising to send them to the US on valid visas.

Instead, he sent them on a harrowing journey through multiple countries, including Spain, El Salvador, Guatemala, and Mexico, the agency said.

Gagandeep had illegally sent more than 100 people to the US before being arrested, the NIA said.

Sunny, who was the main associate or ‘donker’ of Gagandeep’s operation, was heavily involved in arranging these illegal voyages, the agency added.

Punjab CM Bhagwant Mann
</excerpt>

Amritsar: Women and children onboard the second deportation flight from the US, which landed in Amritsar on February 15, were not restrained during the journey, sources confirmed.

Shortly after, a third deportation flight carrying Indian nationals who had allegedly entered the US illegally also arrived in Amritsar on Sunday.

Punjab CM Assures Proper Treatment

Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann assured that deportees would be treated well, with necessary arrangements already in place.

“Our children are returning home. No one will go hungry. We have made arrangements for food and accommodation. They will stay for a few hours before traveling to their respective states. The Ministry of External Affairs has already booked flights for them,” CM Mann stated in a press conference.

Mann Questions Amritsar as Deportation Hub

CM Mann criticized the central government, alleging a conspiracy to defame Punjab.

“Why is every deportation flight landing in Amritsar? The MEA must clarify the criteria for selecting Amritsar as the destination,” he asserted.

His statement comes after the first deportation flight landed in Amritsar on February 5, carrying Indian citizens deported by US authorities.

PM Modi on Deportation and Human Trafficking

Earlier, Prime Minister Narendra Modi reiterated India’s stance on taking back nationals living illegally abroad, emphasizing the need to dismantle human trafficking networks.

“India is ready to take back its verified citizens living illegally in the US. However, our bigger fight is against human trafficking. We must destroy this entire system that misguides innocent people with false promises,” PM Modi said in a joint press conference with US President Donald Trump.

He expressed confidence in Trump’s cooperation in tackling illegal migration and human trafficking.

US-India Coordination on Illegal Migration

The deportations highlight increasing US-India cooperation in addressing illegal migration and human trafficking. The US has been actively deporting undocumented immigrants, while India has been working on repatriation efforts.

As the return of Indian nationals continues, officials stress the importance of creating awareness about the risks of illegal migration and strengthening bilateral efforts to prevent human smuggling.

</excerpt>

LONDON: The British government has unveiled plans for a new sanctions regime aimed at tackling the ringleaders of illegal migration networks. These gangs are responsible for smuggling tens of thousands of people into the UK every year. The move comes as the country grapples with increasing political pressure to reduce the number of small boat crossings from France.

Interior Minister Yvette Cooper announced the initiative, stating,
“With these new sanctions, we will target those profiting off putting lives at risk and disrupt the gangs’ finances, making it harder for them to operate.”

Key Features of the Sanctions

The new sanctions framework, expected to be in place by the end of the year, will empower authorities to:

Ban Entry: Prevent identified individuals from entering the UK.

Freeze Assets: Restrict access to funds held within Britain.

Penalize Associates: Punish individuals or entities doing business with the sanctioned targets.

While the government has not disclosed the exact number of people to be sanctioned, it acknowledged that assets held overseas or transferred through informal cash networks may not fall under these restrictions.

Collaboration Between Ministries

The announcement is part of a broader government effort to demonstrate a coordinated approach between the foreign and interior ministries. Foreign Minister David Lammy is set to highlight this policy in a speech on Thursday.

Shift in Migration Policy

Under Labour Prime Minister Keir Starmer, elected in July 2024, the UK has shifted its focus from deporting migrants to Rwanda—an earlier Conservative government plan—to dismantling smuggling operations. The new strategy targets traffickers who charge thousands of pounds to transport migrants in inflatable boats across the English Channel, one of the world’s busiest shipping routes.

In 2024 alone, over 36,800 people made the perilous crossing, marking a 25% increase from the previous year, according to government data. Tragically, dozens of migrants have lost their lives attempting the journey.

A Growing Crisis

The migrants come from various regions, including North Africa, the Middle East, and parts of Europe, seeking refuge or better opportunities in Britain. The government hopes that targeting the financial and operational networks of smugglers will significantly reduce the dangerous crossings.

Government’s Stand

Highlighting the urgency of the issue, Yvette Cooper emphasized the importance of disrupting the traffickers’ operations:
“This is about saving lives and ensuring that these criminal networks can no longer profit from such dangerous and illegal activities.”

The new measures represent a significant shift in the UK’s immigration policy, focusing on prevention and international cooperation to address the root causes of illegal migration.

</excerpt>

In recent years human trafficking cases has sharply increased, driven by conflicts, climate-induced disasters, and global crises, according to a United Nations report released on Wednesday. United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime’s Global Report on Trafficking in Persons reveals that in 2022, the number of known trafficking victims rose by 25% compared to 2019 levels, which were pre-pandemic. This follows a significant drop in 2020, with the numbers climbing again in 2021.

The report highlights a troubling trend, with organized crime being primarily responsible for exploiting people. Victims are increasingly being trafficked into forced labor, including being coerced into participating in online scams and cyber fraud. Women and girls are particularly vulnerable to sexual exploitation and gender-based violence, while children represent a growing proportion of victims.

Children accounted for 38% of trafficking victims in 2022, an increase from 35% in 2020. Adult women made up the largest group of victims at 39%, followed by men at 23%, girls at 22%, and boys at 16%. The total number of trafficking victims in 2022 stood at 69,627.

Sexual exploitation remains the primary reason for trafficking women and girls, affecting over 60% of the cases. For men, forced labor was the most common form of exploitation, while boys were primarily trafficked for forced labor and criminal activities, including forced begging. The report suggests that rising numbers of unaccompanied minors in Europe and North America could explain the increasing number of boys identified as victims.

Sub-Saharan Africa accounted for the highest percentage of trafficking victims, at 26%, though trafficking routes span across many regions. The report attributes the increase in detected cases to a combination of improved detection methods and a rise in trafficking activities. Significant increases in detected cases were noted in sub-Saharan Africa, North America, and parts of Europe, with migration flows being a key factor.

Authorities emphasize the risks faced by children crossing borders.
</excerpt>

A video released by the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) shows a two-year-old migrant girl from El Salvador found alone at the US border. She was among a group of over 200 migrants, including 60 unaccompanied minors, detained in Maverick County, Texas, on November 24.

The child, wearing a bright pink jacket, held a small yellow note with a name and phone number written on it. When asked by authorities about her destination, she responded, “With my mom and dad,” adding that her parents were in the “United States.”

Authorities Highlight Child Trafficking Risks

The tragic case underscores the dangers faced by migrant children traveling alone. Lt. Chris Olivarez shared the video on social media, emphasizing the risks posed by criminal trafficking networks.

“This is a stark example of the precarious journey these children make,” Olivarez wrote. He noted that DPS has rescued over 900 children during Operation Lone Star from abandonment and human smuggling.

Olivarez condemned the exploitation of unaccompanied minors, stating:

“Regardless of political views, it is unacceptable for any child to be exposed to dangerous criminal trafficking networks.”

Border Security Concerns Rise

The incident highlights growing concerns over border security and the plight of unaccompanied minors. The Biden administration has faced criticism over the handling of migration, while President-elect Donald Trump has pledged to prioritize border security, including plans for the “largest deportation effort in American history.”

A Call to Action

This heartbreaking story sheds light on the urgent need to address human trafficking and ensure the safety of vulnerable children at the US border. The girl’s journey, like many others, is a tragic reminder of the human cost of migration.

</excerpt>

Four Indian-Americans, including a woman, have been charged with allegedly running a human labor trafficking scheme out of a home in Texas, according to a media report. The Princeton Police Department disclosed details of an investigation that resulted in the arrest of four individuals after 15 women were discovered inside the home as alleged victims of human labor trafficking, Fox4News.com reported on Monday night.

The suspects, Chandan Dasireddy, 24, Dwaraka Gunda, 31, Santhosh Katkoori, 31, and Anil Male, 37, were all arrested in March and now face charges of trafficking persons, a second-degree felony. More arrests are anticipated, the channel reported, quoting police sources.

Authorities found that all the young women were forced to sleep on the floor in a home on Ginsburg Lane in Collin County, Princeton. “There was basically no furniture inside the home at the center of human trafficking, just a bunch of computer electronics and blankets,” police stated.

According to another news portal, the McKinney Courier-Gazette, officers from the Princeton Police Department were dispatched on March 13 to a residence following a welfare concern and suspicious circumstances. “After further investigation of the initial report, Princeton Police CID detectives obtained a search warrant for the home of Santhosh Katkoori, where 15 adult females were located. During the investigation, it was discovered that the females were forced to work for Katkoori and multiple programming shell companies owned by him and his wife, Dwaraka Gunda,” the portal reported.

During the execution of the search warrant, multiple laptops, cell phones, printers, and fraudulent documents were seized. It was later determined that several locations within Princeton, Melissa, and McKinney were involved in the forced labor of the victims, including adult males. Additional laptops, cell phones, and documents were seized from these other locations.

The initial concern was raised by a pest control company, which was called in for a possible bed bug issue. “Once inside, the inspector noticed that each room had 3-5 young females sleeping on the floors. There were also large amounts of suitcases. The company contacted the police,” Fox4News.com added.

Princeton Police Sgt. Carolyn Crawford revealed that over 100 more individuals are involved in the operation, “more than half of them victims.” However, she did not disclose the specific type of labor operation that was taking place.

Authorities uncovered a forced labour operation running out of Collin County after responding to a welfare call. The Princeton Police Department has now released details of the investigation, although the arrests were made earlier this year in March.

On March 13, police responded to a welfare call about a “suspicious circumstance” at a home on the 1000 block of Ginsburg Lane. A pest control company inspecting the house for possible bed bugs informed the authorities that “each room… had 3-5 young females sleeping on the floors.”

Princeton Police Sgt. Carolyn Crawford stated that over a dozen people were involved in the forced labour scheme. “I can probably say over 100. Easily,” she said, adding that more than half of them are victims, according to Fox 4. The four arrested individuals are Chandan Dasireddy, 24; Dwaraka Gunda, 31; Santhosh Katkoori, 31; and Anil Male, 37, all charged with trafficking of persons.

NIA investigations have disclosed that the accused were part of an organized trafficking syndicate that enticed and trafficked Indian youth to foreign countries under false promises of legal employment.

An official statement from the NIA stated, “The National Investigation Agency (NIA) on Monday conducted searches at multiple locations across six states and union territories in joint operations with local police in a case of human trafficking involving forced cyber crimes which led to the arrest of five accused persons.”

The arrested individuals were identified as Manish Hingu from Vadodara, Prahlad Singh from Gopalganj, Nabialam Ray from southwest Delhi, Balwant Kataria from Gurugram, and Sartaj Singh from Chandigarh.

During the searches, several incriminating materials such as documents, digital devices, handwritten registers, multiple passports, and bogus overseas employment letters were seized.

Additionally, eight fresh FIRs have been registered by various state and union territories’ police forces.

The youth were allegedly coerced into working in fake call centers in Laos, Golden Triangle SEZ, and Cambodia, among other locations, as part of the racket, which was primarily controlled and operated by foreign nationals.

“They were coerced into undertaking illegal activities online, such as credit card fraud, investments in Cryptocurrency using fake applications, honey trapping, etc,” the release stated.

Investigations revealed that the arrested individuals were collaborating with traffickers operating from across the international border to facilitate the illegal border-crossing of Indian youth from Thailand, Cambodia, and Vietnam to Laos SEZ. They were working under the direction of foreign-based agents belonging to well-organized syndicates that were active in several districts of Maharashtra, UP, Bihar, Gujarat, Delhi, Punjab, Haryana, etc.

</excerpt>

Gurugram Police apprehended social media influencer Bobby Kataria on Monday for purportedly managing an international human trafficking network, as reported by India Today. Kataria’s arrest ensued from a collaborative operation between Gurugram Police and the National Investigation Agency (NIA) at his residence in Gurugram’s Sector-109.

During the operation, authorities discovered several suspicious documents and a significant amount of cash.

Kataria’s arrest followed an FIR lodged by Gurugram Police, alleging his involvement, along with other traffickers, in the detention of over 150 Indians, confiscating their passports and other documents, and coercing them into cyber fraud activities for a Chinese corporation. The FIR also outlined severe mistreatment endured by the victims.

Two individuals, Arun Kumar from Gopalganj, Uttar Pradesh, and Manish Tomar from Dhaulapur, Hapur, filed a complaint with Gurugram Police, accusing Bobby Kataria of promoting overseas job opportunities on his Instagram page.

Inspired by the advertisement, they contacted Kataria’s team and visited his office in Sector 109, Gurugram, where they paid a registration fee of Rs 2,000 and were promised jobs in the UAE. In pursuit of their aspirations, they ended up transferring Rs 3.5 lakh in three installments to Kataria’s accounts.

According to the victims, they were sent to Vientiane (Laos) on tickets provided by Kataria. Upon arrival, they were greeted by an associate who identified himself as Pakistani and escorted them to a hotel in Vientiane.

The following day, they encountered an individual named Abhi, who provided them with train tickets to Navatuai. Upon arrival, they were met by Ankit Shaukeen and Nitish Sharma, who escorted them to a Chinese company where their passports were seized, and they were subjected to captivity and abuse.

The complainants stated they were coerced into participating in illegal American cyber fraud activities. In a state of desperation, they managed to escape and seek refuge at the Indian embassy, where they exposed Bobby Kataria and his network.

Law enforcement agencies, including the police and NIA, are conducting further investigations to apprehend other individuals implicated in the human trafficking syndicate.

This is not the first instance of Bobby Kataria’s arrest. Previously, he was detained in a case related to extortion and online harassment of a woman.

In August 2022, a case was registered against him in Dehradun after a video depicting him consuming alcohol in the middle of a road circulated on social media.

The Gurugram-based influencer was also arrested in 2022 for filming himself smoking a cigarette inside a SpiceJet flight.

</excerpt>

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) on Monday assumed custody of Hannan Miah, the alleged mastermind behind a human trafficking ring. Miah had been apprehended earlier by the Tripura Police from the Rastar Matha area in Tripura’s Sepahijala district.

He had evaded capture for an extended period after the NIA declared him a fugitive in connection with a case involving human trafficking across the India-Bangladesh international border. The NIA had also offered a cash reward of one lakh rupees for information leading to his arrest.

“Since he was a listed accused in a case being investigated by the NIA, he was handed over to the officials of the investigation agency on Monday. He was produced before the court with a prayer of a transit remand which was later granted. He is now being shifted to Guwahati for further legal procedures,” local police station in-charge of Bishalgarh Police Station Rana Chatterjee told ANI.

Miah originates from Matinagar, a village situated on the border in West Tripura district. He faces charges under various sections of the Indian Penal Code, including 120b, 121A, 153A(1), 153B, 465, 471, 295A, 109, and 370, as well as sections 12(1)(a)/12(1A)(a)(b) and 12(2) of the Indian Passport Act 1967.

Investigation agencies have also uncovered Miah’s connections to unlawful associations and terrorist organizations.

ANI quoted order copy of the transit remand, “….the accused person Hannan Miah was arraigned as accused in the case and is involved in conspiracy for trafficking large number of Bangladeshi nationals and Rohingya migrants from Bangladesh making a large number of forged or fake Indian ID Documents and having link with other absconding accused persons and terrorist organization, underground outfits and unlawful associations.”

The order issued by the local court also stressed the importance of presenting him before the special court.

“In my view, while deciding prayer of Transit Remand the Court is not obligated to record detailed reasons and considering the totality of facts and circumstances in the instant case and to safeguard the ongoing investigation, I am satisfied that the production of the arrested accused person namely Hannan Miah by the NIA Special Court in Guwahati is essential. The prayer of the Tramit Remand of the accused namely Hannan Miah, son of Kalu Mia allowed for four days w.e.f today. The arresting team is directed to produce the above named accused person in the NIA Special Court Guwahati before the Id. NIA Special Judge, Guwahati, Asam as soon as practicable within the said period. Send the copy of this order to all concerned. The case is disposed of,” the order concluded.

A three-member team of NIA investigators arrived in Tripura from Assam to assume custody of the accused individual.

Police authorities in Bandipora, Kashmir, have apprehended five individuals, including a Rohingya man, in connection with an alleged human trafficking case involving Rohingya women.

According to SSP Lakshay Sharma, the accused organized the trafficking of Rohingya women from Bangladesh into the Union Territory, arranging marriages with locals in exchange for monetary gains. Manzoor Alam, a kingpin, is among those apprehended.

Highlighting the seriousness of the matter, SSP Sharma emphasized the illegality of infiltrating Rohingya women from Bangladeshi refugee camps into India and subsequently engaging in human trafficking by selling them as brides.

On November 23, local authorities launched an investigation into the trafficking, confirming two marriages of Rohingya women. Legal proceedings in the case have begun, addressing the crime’s dual nature: illegal infiltration and human trafficking.
