Hockey India Academy Championship 2024 Kicks Off Today In New Delhi For Zones A & B

The 2nd Hockey India Sub Junior Men and Women Academy Championship 2024 for Zones A and B is set to commence with the men’s matches in New Delhi. The men’s games will begin on Sunday, August 4, while the women’s matches are slated to start on Monday. Both the men’s and women’s finals are scheduled for August 11. The men’s matches will take place at Major Dhyan Chand Hockey Ground, and the women’s matches will be held at Jhilmil Hockey Center in New Delhi.

Hockey India President Dilip Tirkey emphasized the importance of match experience for young players, stating, “We must provide youngsters with ample match experience at early stages in their career to ensure complete development of the players. The Sub Junior Academy Championships will give the youngsters a platform to showcase the results of the hard work they have put in over the years.”

Hockey India Secretary General Bhola Nath Singh added, “The Academy Championships are put in place to give youngsters a platform to show their skills and also to shine on areas that require improvement. This will help the coaches to impart specific coaching and help these young stars realise their full potential. We all hope to see some exciting talent to shine from these Championships.”

In the men’s category, Pool A includes Roundglass Punjab Hockey Club Academy, Cheema Hockey Academy, and Ritu Rani Hockey Academy. Pool B features Ghumanhera Riser’s Academy, Jai Bharat Hockey Academy, and R K Roy Hockey Academy. Pool C comprises Raja Karan Hockey Academy, Namdhari Sports Academy, and Thirumavalavan Hockey Academy. Har Hockey Academy, Army Boys Sports Company, Republican Sports Club, and Ashwini Sports Academy are in Pool D.

The women’s category has two pools: Pool A includes Har Hockey Academy, Khalsa Hockey Academy (Amritsar), Anantapur Sports Academy, and Ritu Rani Hockey Academy. Pool B comprises Jai Bharat Hockey Academy, Citizen Hockey XI, Roundglass Punjab Hockey Club Academy, and R K Roy Hockey Academy.

Excitement Builds For 2nd Hockey India Sub Junior North Zone Championship 2024 In UP

The 2nd Hockey India Sub Junior Men and Women North Zone Championship 2024 is set to kick off in Jhansi, Uttar Pradesh, on July 15, with the finals scheduled for July 22. The tournament promises to showcase some of the best young hockey talent from the region.

In the men’s category, Pool A features Hockey Haryana, Hockey Chandigarh, and Hockey Uttarakhand. Pool B includes Uttar Pradesh Hockey, Hockey Punjab, Delhi Hockey, and Hockey Jammu and Kashmir. For the women’s category, the teams competing are Hockey Haryana, Uttar Pradesh Hockey, Hockey Punjab, Hockey Himachal, Hockey Chandigarh, and Hockey Uttarakhand.

The tournament begins with Hockey Punjab taking on Hockey Jammu and Kashmir in the men’s category, followed by a match between Uttar Pradesh Hockey and Delhi Hockey. In the women’s category, the opening game will see Hockey Haryana face Hockey Chandigarh, followed by Hockey Punjab versus Hockey Himachal, and concluding with Uttar Pradesh Hockey against Hockey Uttarakhand.

Hockey India Announces 33-Member Squad For National Women’s Coaching Camp

Hockey India announced on Saturday the 33-member Indian Women’s Hockey Team that will resume training at the National Women’s Coaching Camp in SAI Bengaluru from July 1 to August 31. After wrapping up their FIH Hockey Pro League 2023/24 season in London and Antwerp, the team took a short break. Led by captain Salima Tete and vice-captain Navneet Kaur, the Indian squad, under the leadership of Chief Coach Harendra Singh, displayed moments of brilliance in closely contested matches against Argentina, Belgium, Germany, and Great Britain.

The selected squad features goalkeepers Savita, Bichu Devi Kharibam, Bansari Solanki, and Madhuri Kindo. The defenders chosen for the core group include Nikki Pradhan, Udita, Ishika Chaudhary, Monika, Ropni Kumari, Mahima Choudhary, Jyoti Chhatri, and Preeti.

In the midfield, the players picked are Salima Tete, Marina Lalramnghaki, Vaishnavi Vitthal Phalke, Neha, Jyoti, Edula Jyoti, Baljeet Kaur, Manisha Chauhan, Akshata Abaso Dhekale, and Ajmina Kujur.

Chief Coach Harendra Singh commented on the progress of the Indian Women’s Hockey Team saying, “We recently travelled to Antwerp and London for the Europe leg of the Pro League, and while the results were not in our favour, we learned a lot as a team. On several occasions, we were leading, and we proactively searched and threatened to score while looking for an equalizer. These are good signs to have in the initial stages of a rebuild, and I am sure the Indian Women’s Hockey Team will be a force to be reckoned with in the future.”

Hockey India announces 20-member junior men’s team for 4 Nations Tournament in Germany

The 20-member Indian junior men’s hockey team, which will compete in the 4 Nations Tournament in Dusseldorf, Germany, from August 18 to 22, was announced by Hockey India on Thursday. The tournament, which is part of India’s preparations for the crucial FIH Hockey Men’s Junior World Cup 2023, scheduled to be held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia from December 5 to 16, will feature matches against England, Spain, and tournament hosts Germany. Uttam Singh, as captain, and Boby Singh Dhami, as vice captain, are the team’s stalwart forwards.

The goalkeeping department will be entrusted to the reliable duo of Mohith H S and Ranvijay Singh Yadav, while the defenders travelling to Germany are Sharda Nand Tiwari, Rohit, Amandeep Lakra, Amir Ali, Waribam Niraj Kumar Singh, and Yogember Rawat.
Meanwhile, the midfield will witness the presence of dynamic players like Poovanna C B, Vishnukant Singh, Rajinder Singh, Amandeep, Sunit Lakra, Chetan Sharma, and Amit Kumar Yadav.

Hockey India names women’s hockey squad for Australia tour

Hockey India on Monday named a 20-member Indian women’s hockey team for a three-match series against Australia to be held in Adelaide from May 18–21. They will also play two games against Australia “A.” The tour will be part of the team’s preparations for the Hangzhou Asian Games in 2023.

The Indian team for the Australia Tour will be led by ace goalkeeper Savita, who was recently bestowed with the Balbir Singh Senior Hockey India Player of the Year (2022) Award. She will be assisted by Deep Grace Ekka as vice captain. Bichu Devi Kharibam is the second goalkeeper named in the squad, apart from defenders Deep Grace Ekka, Nikki Pradhan, Ishika Chaudhary, Udita, and Gurjit Kaur. Midfielders include Nisha, Navjot Kaur, Monika, Salima Tete, Neha, Navneet Kaur, Sonika, Jyoti, and Baljeet Kaur.

India’s forward line will be spearheaded by the seasoned striker Vandana Katariya, who has more than 250 international caps. She will be joined by Lalremsiami, Sangita Kumari, and Sharmila Devi.

“We are excited to have international exposure again after two intense training blocks. Australia is a formidable opponent who loves to play attacking hockey with speed. It will be a great test for us, and we will endeavour to match their speed on offence while maintaining our defensive ground,” Chief Coach Janneke Scopman said, according to a Hockey India release.

India will face Australia on 18 and 20, and 21 May and Australia ‘A’ on 25 May and 27 May. Mate Stadium in Adelaide will host all five games.

National Sports Federation promises to take Hockey to remote parts of the country

The national governing body of hockey launched the “Hockey India ka Abhiyan Har Ghar Ho Hockey Ki Pehchan” programme with the intention of involving all districts to hold frequent coaching camps and intra-district competition.

The National Sports Federation has urged all the State Member Units to work closely with their respective district associations and ensure that they host regular activities to help promote hockey and scout talent after the success of the 1st Hockey India Zonal Championships held across North, South, East, and West Zones.

According to Hockey India, every state shall have district and state-level competitions throughout the year, with the district championship results used to determine which teams will compete in the state finals. The state championships also assist in choosing the state squad that will compete in the Hockey India National Championships.

Bhola Nath Singh, the secretary general of Hockey India, proposed dividing the state and district championships into six categories to correspond with the national championship. These tournaments and coaching clinics have already started at the district level for a number of State Member Units, including the Hockey Association of Odisha, Hockey Jharkhand, Hockey Bihar, Uttar Pradesh Hockey, Le Puducherry Hockey, Hockey Andaman and Nicobar, Kerala Hockey, Assam Hockey, Hockey Jammu & Kashmir, and Hockey Arunachal.

Districts such as Simdega, Jammu, Jamtara, Hardoi, Muzzafarpur, Upper Subansiri, Jharsuguda and Villianur have already completed hosting age-group level matches and coaching camps.

As part of the ‘Hockey India ka Abhiyan Har Ghar Ho Hockey Ki Pehchan program’, hockey sticks and balls were also distributed in various states while Hockey India office bearers are in constant communication with their Member Units to further facilitate and provide any support needed in promoting the sport.

Asian Champions Trophy 2023 to kick off from 3 August in Chennai

In a bid to take international hockey events to different cities across the country, Hockey India announced Chennai, Tamil Nadu, as the venue for the forthcoming Asian Champions Trophy Chennai 2023.

This will be the seventh edition of the coveted tournament, which is scheduled to be held from 3 August to 12 August, 2023, serving as a precursor to the Hangzhou Asian Games in September this year, where teams will vie to win the gold and qualify for the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris. Chennai last hosted an international hockey event in 2007 when the prestigious Asia Cup was held, and the venue proved to be lucky for the home team, which clinched the title by beating Korea 7-2 in the Final.

The Indian Men’s Team won this title in the inaugural edition held in 2011 and beat Pakistan in the final to win the title in 2016. In the following edition in 2018, India and Pakistan were joint winners after rain affected the proceedings of the final held in Muscat.

Welcoming the participating teams to Tamil Nadu, Minister of Youth Welfare and Sports Development Udhayanidhi Stalin said, as quoted by a Hockey India press release, “It is indeed a great pleasure and honour to host the Asian Champions Trophy Chennai 2023 in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, which was once the capital of hockey in South India with many reputed domestic and international events being held here. I am very delighted to see the sport being revived in the state with many youngsters coming up the ranks, including a recent sensation in the Indian team, S Karthi, who is from Tamil Nadu.”

Hockey India announces support staff for men’s and women’s teams

Hockey India announced on Friday that Rhett Halkett and Alan Tan will join the support staff of the Indian men’s hockey team in their new roles as analytical coach and scientific advisor, respectively.

The Governing Body of Hockey in India had earlier announced Craig Fulton as the new Chief Coach for the men’s hockey team. Hockey India also announced that former Japan women’s hockey team head coach Anthony Farry will fill in the position of analytical coach for the Indian women’s hockey team.

Rhett, a former South African international, amassed 155 international caps between 2010 and 2018. In 2020, Rhett went on to join the Netherlands women’s hockey team as the assistant coach. In his one-year tenure, he was part of the support staff during the FIH Women’s Pro League 2020–21, European Championships, and Tokyo Olympics. In 2022, Rhett took over the role of assistant coach for the Scotland men’s hockey team and also led the Scotland U-21 men’s hockey team as the head coach.

Alan Tan comes with over 10.5 years of experience working as the Strength and Conditioning Coach at the NSW Institute of Sport from January 2011 and September 2021. He also went on to take over the role of National Development Squad Programme Manager at Wheelchair Rugby Australia from August 2021 to March 2023.

Alan worked as a laboratory tutor and unit assessor marker for Bachelor Exercise and Sport Science at the University of Technology, Sydney, from September 2021 to March 2023 before taking over as senior strength and conditioning coach for Tennis Australia at the Sydney Training Centre from November 2022 to March 2023.

While Anthony Farry takes on the role of the Indian team’s analytical coach, he is backed by a three-year stint as the assistant coach for Hockey Australia between December 2008 and 2011. He came into the limelight during his tenure as Canada Men’s Hockey Team Head Coach and High-Performance Director between August 2011 and February 2017, with Canada successfully qualifying for the 2016 Rio Olympic Games through the World League qualification system for the first time in history.

He also helped the Canada U-21 Men’s Hockey Team qualify for two consecutive editions of the Junior World Cups. Farry also went on to lead the Japan women’s hockey team as the head coach and high-performance director between February 2017 and August 2020. Under his guidance, Japan won its first gold medal in the Asian Games in 2018. Farry was named Head Coach and High-Performance Director of the USA Women’s Hockey Team from August 2020 to April 2022.

India junior women zonal championships 2023: Hockey Punjab, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh crowned champions

Hockey Haryana, Hockey Jharkhand, Hockey Madhya Pradesh, and Hockey Karnataka won the Finals in their respective zones in the first Hockey India Junior Women Zonal Championships 2023 on Sunday.

Hockey Haryana wins the North Zone Final, followed by Hockey Punjab and Uttar Pradesh. Hockey finishes second and third, respectively.

Hockey Haryana won the inaugural Hockey India Junior Women North Zone Championship 2023 on Sunday in Jhansi, Uttar Pradesh, defeating Hockey Punjab 4-1 in the final. Shashi Khasa (11′, 60′) scored a brace to lead Hockey Haryana to victory, while Manisha (2′) and Ravina (50′) also scored one goal each. Sweena Rani (50′), on the other hand, scored the consolation goal for Hockey Punjab.

Earlier in the day, Uttar Pradesh Hockey beat Delhi Hockey 7-0 in the 3rd/4th place match to finish third in the North Zone. Captain Suneeta Kumari (33′, 36′) and Purnima Yadav (6′, 13′) scored a brace each while Kanchan Kumari (6′), Peetambari Kumari (8′), and Vandana Patel (47′) scored one goal each for Uttar Pradesh Hockey.

East Zone: Hockey Jharkhand wins the final, followed by Hockey Mizoram and Hockey Association of Odisha.

Hockey Jharkhand won the first Hockey India Junior Women East Zone Championship 2023 in Khunti (Ranchi), Jharkhand, after defeating Hockey Mizoram in a penalty shootout after the game was tied at 2 – 2 (2 – 1 SO) at the end of regulation time.

INDIA WOMEN’S HOCKEY LOSES 1-3 TO WORLD NUMBER ONE SIDE NETHERLANDS

After a strong outing against home team South Africa in a four-match series which the Indian Women’s Team Hockey Team won 3-0, the team led by Savita lost 1-3 to World Number 1 Netherlands in a hard-fought match here on Monday.

India is scheduled to play three matches against the Netherlands as part of their tour of South Africa. Riding on good form, the Indian side got off to a strong, attacking start with young sensation Beauty Dungdung scoring a brilliant field goal in the 24th minute of the match.

While the 1-0 lead gave India a head start, the lead did not last long enough with the Netherlands scoring an equaliser in the 29th minute. It was a PC converted by Felice Albers. While both teams played on par with each other in the third quarter, no goals were scored but the Netherlands went into top gear in the final quarter scoring two important goals to end the match with 3-1 on board. It was Yibby Janssen and Freeke Moes who scored in Netherlands’ victory.

“We are here to cause an upset”: Wales captain Rupert Shipperley ahead of the FIH Men’s Hockey World Cup.

The excitement and anticipation for the mega event was evident on the faces of the members of the Wales Men’s Hockey Team as they touched down at the Biju Patnaik International Airport in Bhubaneswar on Saturday.

“We are really excited to come and play our first world cup in India, it really is a privilege to be here but ultimately we are here to play hockey, playing against India in front of the Indian fans is the icing on the cake.” said head coach Danny Newcombe as quoted by Hockey India.

The Head Coach also sounded off a warning to all the other teams in Pool D, which includes host India, Spain and England, saying that the Welsh team are not going to crumble under any kind of pressure.

“This player group is quite experienced, most of us have been together for almost six years and we earned the right to be here we are not here to just participate in the FIH Odisha Hockey Men’s World Cup 2023 Bhubaneswar-Rourkela,” he asserted.

Wales’ Captain Rupert Shipperley in his statement said that his side is keen to ensure the year begins with a bang in Odisha. The FIH Odisha Hockey Men’s World Cup 2023 Bhubaneswar-Rourkela is especially important for the Wales men’s hockey team as it will be their first-ever prestigious tournament. Wales open their FIH Odisha Hockey Men’s World Cup 2023 Bhubaneswar-Rourkela campaign against England on January 13 and play Spain on January 15, in the Birsa Munda International Hockey Stadium in Rourkela.

Adding to his statement Shipperley said, “We are here to win, it’s as simple as that. We are not here to just make up the numbers, we are here to cause an upset”

The Wales team had previously played the Indian Men’s Hockey Team at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham and had been handed a 4-1 defeat. However, Captain Shipperley believes his side have worked on their game, and are ready to take on the hosts in Bhubaneswar on January 19 at the Kalinga Stadium.

“We are looking forward to playing India in front of their fans, it is going to be a special occasion. We have faced all the teams in our pool before and we know what to expect, we are just raring to go now,” said Shipperley

Hockey India announces cash incentives for players after every win

While boosting the morale of the players, hockey India has announced cash incentives on every win for the players from both men’s and women’s team. The organization has announced a new policy under which players will be assured of cash incentives annually. The decision comes after the BCCI’ decision to provide equal amount to both men and women team after every match. As per the HI policy, a cash reward of Rs 50,000 for the players, and Rs 25,000 each for support staff will be facilitated. The award will be for the playing members of the squad.

“Hockey India has unanimously decided to award a cash incentive of Rs 50,000 each to the players of the Indian Men and Women’s Hockey Team for every victory they register from here on. The support staff will also be awarded Rs 25,000 each and this cash incentive will be given away annually. I strongly believe this announcement will boost the morale of the Indian Teams as they prepare for the prestigious World Cup in January and the Asian Games. While every player in the core group is employed, an incentive like this will attract more youngsters to play hockey,” Hockey India President Dilip Tirkey said in an official statement released by HI

Outlining the decision as ‘landmark’, Hockey India Secretary General Bholanath Singh said, “I believe this is a landmark decision taken by Hockey India. It will not only lift the spirit of the Indian teams to vie harder for victories but it will also make young aspiring hockey players believe that hockey can be a financially viable sport.
