</excerpt>

Bollywood actress Triptii Dimri has been captivating audiences with her performances in hit films like Bad Newz, Animal, and Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3. Despite her growing fame, she keeps her food preferences grounded, enjoying simple, traditional meals that connect her to her roots. Originally from Uttarakhand’s Pauri Garhwal district, Triptii finds comfort in coming home to a bowl of Chainsoo (or Chaunsa) Dal after a busy day. In a recent conversation with Ranveer Allahbadia, also known as BeerBiceps, she shared her love for this unique regional dish.

The Legacy of Garhwali Cuisine

Garhwali cuisine reflects the food traditions of Uttarakhand’s Garhwali people, commonly referred to as Pahadis (or Paharis). Although from the same mountainous area, Garhwali food differs in simplicity from the more elaborate Kashmiri and Himachali cuisines. Historically, the Garhwal region’s harsh climate has posed challenges to agriculture and trade, resulting in a reliance on local, seasonal ingredients. Staples like rice, millet, and a variety of lentils form the foundation of Garhwali diets.

Garhwali cuisine is distinct from Kumaoni cuisine, though both are rooted in similar cultural practices. While Garhwali dishes often feature dals like urad, tor, and gehat, Kumaoni cuisine leans more towards bhatt (black soybeans) and soya dal. These regional variations highlight the diverse agricultural practices and local produce of Uttarakhand.

What Is Chainsoo Dal?

Chainsoo, also known as Chaunsa, is a nourishing dal dish from Garhwal, valued for its high protein content and warming qualities. Traditionally made with black gram (urad dal), there is also a variation using black soybeans, known as bhattwani. The dal is roasted and ground, creating a smooth texture and a deep, earthy flavor. Cooked with a blend of spices and vegetables, this preparation method imparts a unique aroma to Chainsoo, distinguishing it from other Indian dals.

This humble yet hearty dish is filling and energizing, making it an ideal staple for people living in the chilly Himalayan region. Its simplicity, high protein content, and satisfying flavors make it a favorite among the locals and an excellent example of Garhwali culinary heritage.

</excerpt>

Mandi BJP MP Kangana Ranaut has retracted her previous comments advocating for the reinstatement of the three farm laws that were repealed in 2021. She clarified that her views were personal and do not reflect the stance of her party.

In a video posted on social media, Ranaut expressed regret for any disappointment her statement may have caused, emphasizing that her opinions on the controversial laws were not representative of the BJP’s position. The Himachal Pradesh BJP has also distanced itself from her remarks.

In her message, Ranaut stated, “When the farmers’ laws were proposed, many of us supported them. However, with great sensitivity, our respected Prime Minister withdrew those laws. I regret if I disappointed anyone with my words, and I take them back.”

During an event in Mandi district on Tuesday, she noted that protests against the three farm laws occurred mainly in specific states. She remarked, “Farmers are essential to India’s progress. I appeal with folded hands for the farm laws to be reinstated in the interest of farmers.” Ranaut asserted that restoring the laws would promote financial stability and growth for farmers, ultimately benefiting the agricultural sector.

The Congress party criticized her comments, suggesting they indicate the ruling party’s intentions to reinstate the laws, and vowed that Haryana would respond decisively. Ranaut’s remarks come ahead of the assembly elections in Haryana on October 5, a state that experienced significant protests from farmers demanding the repeal of the laws, which were ultimately withdrawn by the Modi government in 2021.

The affected districts include Bilaspur, Chamba, Hamirpur, Kangra, Kullu, and Mandi.

Earlier, on the night of August 16, a cloudburst followed by severe flooding struck the Damrali Nallah area in Taklech sub-tehsil of Rampur sub-division. This caused significant disruption, including the breaking of approximately 30 meters of road and damage to nearby mobile towers. Fortunately, no loss of life or major property damage was reported. Shimla Sub-Divisional Magistrate Nishant Tomar and Deputy Superintendent of Police Naresh Sharma promptly arrived at the scene to assess the damage.
In another development, the road near Nigulsari Sliding Point on the Shimla-Kinnaur Highway (NH-5) completely caved in, halting traffic in the area.

On August 18, the IMD also issued an orange alert for several states, including West Bengal, Nagaland, Mizoram, and Tripura, predicting very heavy rainfall. Heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected in Bihar, Chhattisgarh, and various parts of southern India. The Northwestern states, particularly Uttar Pradesh, are also on high alert with forecasts indicating sustained heavy rainfall over the next 5 to 7 days.

IMD scientist Dr. Naresh Kumar explained, “We have issued an orange alert for August 18-19 for West Bengal, Nagaland, Mizoram, and Tripura due to anticipated very heavy rainfall. Bihar, Chhattisgarh, and the South Peninsular area will also experience heavy to very heavy rainfall. In the Northwestern states like Uttar Pradesh, heavy rainfall is expected over the next 5-7 days. Light rainfall is predicted for Delhi NCR.”

Meanwhile, Delhi experienced rainfall on Sunday afternoon, providing some relief from the prevailing humid weather conditions.

On Thursday, former Himachal Pradesh chief minister Jairam Thakur visited Kuklah in the Mandi district, which was devastated by a landslip, and he requested current state chief minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu to provide food for the locals.
“I have visited my constituency keeping in mind the significant loss caused by the state’s heavy rainfall. Today a two-story school building fell, and due to fissures practically all homes are now insecure. Six people’s lives had been lost in one day, according to the former HP CM.

The state has reported 113 landslides this monsoon season.

</excerpt>

Hiamchal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukvinder Singh Sukhu clarified on Thursday that “none of the provisions of the water Cess Act passed by the state violates the water rights of neighbouring states.”
He further stated that the water cess has already been imposed by various state governments like Uttarakhand and Jammu and Kashmir governments.
“None of the provisions of this Act violates the water rights of neighbouring states,” CM Sukhu said. “I would like to inform the House that this Act in no way violates the provisions of the Inter-State River Dispute Act-1956 or any other MoU and I want to assure all the neighbouring states that this Ordinance will not affect Legitimate Rights,” CM Sukhu assured.
“On the same lines, the Government of Himachal Pradesh has set up various power generation agencies to increase the revenue of the state. The cess is levied on water used by established hydropower projects and not on water flowing across neighbouring state borders,” CM Sukhu informed.
CM Sukhu made his comments after the governments of Punjab and Haryana objected to the Water Cess Act of 2023, which the governments of Himachal Pradesh and Punjab had introduced.
The claim by Punjab and Haryana that the Himachal government’s plan to levy a water cess is in violation of the Inter-State River Disputes Act, 1956, was later refuted by CM Sukhu as being illogical because it has no bearing on the water given to adjacent states.
“I also want to bring to notice that imposing water cess on power generation is under the jurisdiction of the state and it is logical that about 45000-hectare land of the state was submerged by the reservoirs of three projects of BBMB in the state. In Himachal Pradesh, the state does not have any right over the water from the reservoirs created by these projects, but the adverse environmental impact of these reservoirs Himachal has been facing for decades, be it local climate change, adverse changes in agriculture and horticulture, facing health problems, social and economic changes, all these changes have affected the reservoirs of these projects. Has badly affected human life,” the CM added.

Organized by the Social Justice and Empowerment Department, this award is presented to several women for their contributions in different fields. Yesterday, ahead of ‘International Women’s Day,” CM Sukhu participated in a state-level function in Shimla and awarded three women with the “Protsahan Puraskar,” and many others were awarded in different fields, such as the “Utkrisht Award for Women.

Addressing the function, CM Sukhu on Monday said that “women are the pillars of society.” He added that “we shall be celebrating International Women’s Day on March 8, but people will be celebrating Holi on the same day as well. Thus, we’ve arranged the programme for women’s day today and are really happy to greet all the women on this occasion. Women have been playing an important role in society,” he added.

CM Sukhu said, “The 73rd and 74th amendment bills were passed under the leadership of late Indian PM Rajiv Gandhi and they provide 33% reservation to women.” He made this comment while talking about the reservation granted to women through the 73rd and 74th amendment bills. Encouraging other women to come forward and serve society, an award-winning woman, Devkanya Thakur, said, “An aware woman can change society and the world. I would appeal to the young women to come forward to serve the society instead of grooming themselves.”

Rajnath Singh, Defence Minister of India said on Thursday that only two Prime Ministers in the history of the India, Atal Bihari Vajpayee and Narendra Modi gave importance to Himachal Pradesh like nobody else.
