</excerpt>

Actor Rajeev Khandelwal recently shared his experience of being cast in a Sanjay Leela Bhansali film that never happened. In an interview with Siddharth Kannan, he talked about the project and his feelings about it.

The Missed Chance

Around 2009-2010, Rajeev was chosen for the lead role in a film called ‘Chenab Gandhi,’ which was to feature Amitabh Bachchan and Vidya Balan. Bhansali liked Rajeev’s look and decided to cast him. Rajeev said, “Sanjay Leela Bhansali is a very respected director. He liked my look and told me he wanted me for the film.”

Exciting Script

The film, to be directed by Vibhu Puri, had an amazing script that excited Rajeev. “The script was fantastic. Amitabh Bachchan and Vidya Balan were also in it. I didn’t want to miss this opportunity, not just because it was Bhansali’s film, but because the script was so great.”

The Wait

Despite the initial excitement, the film never happened. Rajeev expressed his frustration about not being kept informed. “The only hard part was not knowing if the film would happen. When I finally heard it was canceled, I accepted it and moved on. It did feel like a waste of time, but I was willing to invest that time for such a great project. But these things happen in the industry.”

Moving On

Rajeev handled the situation well, viewing it as part of the unpredictable nature of the film industry. “When I heard the film wasn’t happening, I told myself this happens to everyone. It’s part of the business, so I moved on.”

Bhansali’s Current Work

While ‘Chenab Gandhi’ didn’t happen, Bhansali continues to succeed. His recent Netflix show ‘Heeramandi‘ is popular. Set during the Indian independence movement, the show explores the lives of courtesans in Lahore and their interactions with British officials. It stars Sonakshi Sinha, Aditi Rao Hydari, and Richa Chadha, among others, and a second season is already planned.

Rajeev Khandelwal’s experience shows the ups and downs of the film industry. Despite the setback, his positive attitude and resilience stand out. Fans can look forward to seeing Rajeev in more roles and to Bhansali’s future projects.

On Saturday, Richa posted a series of pictures on her Instagram account, expressing how she never feels alone because of the constant reminders from her unborn baby.

Constant Reminders

In her post, Richa wrote, “The discomfort is lonely, but it’s because I’m not alone. I have constant reminders in the form of tiny waves of movement, a knee, a sudden kick, a feeling of someone listening in… Waiting for a bud to blossom. Aaja yaar.”

Sharing the Good News

Richa and Ali Fazal are eagerly awaiting the arrival of their first child. The couple announced the pregnancy news in February, sharing an image on Instagram that read “1 + 1 = 3” with the caption, “A tiny heartbeat is the loudest sound in our world.”

Their Love Story

Richa and Ali met on the sets of the movie “Fukrey” in 2012 and soon fell in love. They have been legally married since 2020, but celebrated their union with grand festivities in 2022 across Delhi, Mumbai, and Lucknow.

Richa’s Current Projects

Meanwhile, Richa Chadha is receiving praise for her performance as Lajjo in the recently released series “Heeramandi”. The show features a star-studded cast including Manisha Koirala, Sonakshi Sinha, Aditi Rao Hydari, Sharmin Sehgal, and Sanjeeda Sheikh. It also stars Fardeen Khan, Taha Shah Badussha, Shekhar Suman, and Adhyayan Suman as the Nawabs.

Sharmin Segal, known for her role as Alamzeb in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s “Heeramandi,” recently responded to criticism surrounding her portrayal in the series. Social media users criticized her performance, with some labeling it ‘expressionless,’ prompting Segal to disable comments on her Instagram account.

Out-of-Context Interviews and ‘Outsider’ Comments

In an interview with Times Now, Segal addressed controversies over her remarks, particularly a viral clip involving co-star Sanjeeda Shaikh. Segal emphasized that her interviews had been taken out of context, expressing disappointment that brief clips were being used to define her relationships with co-stars like Aditi Rao Hydari and Sanjeeda Shaikh, both of whom she maintains a cordial relationship with.

Acting Journey and Industry Background

Segal, the niece of filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali, made her acting debut in “Malaal” opposite Meezaan Jafri. Prior to acting, she worked as an assistant director on acclaimed films such as “Mary Kom” and “Bajirao Mastani.” Her transition into acting under her uncle’s guidance has been a significant step in her career.

About “Heeramandi” and Renewal

“Heeramandi,” a series set in the pre-partition era’s red-light district of Heera Mandi in Lahore, has been noted for its portrayal of power struggles amidst courtesans, Nawabs, and British officers during India’s independence revolution. The series boasts a star-studded cast including Manisha Koirala, Aditi Rao Hydari, Sonakshi Sinha, Richa Chadha, and others. Recently renewed for a second season, the series continues to explore historical complexities and narrative depth.

Future Prospects and Industry Reflections

Segal’s reflections on the scrutiny faced by emerging talents in the entertainment industry highlight ongoing discussions about performance evaluation and the challenges of navigating public perception.

“Heeramandi” is currently available for streaming on Netflix, with further updates expected on Segal’s evolving career in Bollywood.

Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s “Heeramandi” has emerged as one of the most-watched Indian shows on Netflix. Despite receiving praise for their performances, all actors onboard, Sharmin Segal faced criticism for her acting abilities on social media. Segal had previously mentioned drawing inspiration from Meena Kumari’s ‘nothingness’ in “Pakeezah” for her role in “Heeramandi.” However, Tajdar Amrohi, the late actor’s stepson, strongly opposed Segal’s comparison, asserting that “Pakeezah” should not be compared to “Heeramandi.”

In an interview with Zoom TV, Tajdar Amrohi, the son of legendary filmmaker Kamal Amrohi, expressed his disapproval of comparing the recently popular series “Heeramandi” with the classic film “Pakeezah.”

What Tajdar Amrohi Has To Say?

Amrohi emphasized the vast difference between the two works, stating, “There is a difference of earth and sky between them.” He discouraged the comparison, asserting that “Pakeezah” is incomparable due to the irreplaceable talents of Meena Kumari and Kamal Amrohi. Amrohi recalled a visit by Sanjay Leela Bhansali to Kamalistan Studio, where Bhansali showed great reverence for his father’s work. While Amrohi respected Bhansali’s admiration, he emphasized the uniqueness of each cinematic creation.

Amrohi disagreed with Sharmin Segal’s statement regarding her portrayal in “Heeramandi,” particularly her reference to Meena Kumari’s performance in “Pakeezah.” He stated, “No, I can’t relate to her statement on nothingness.” Segal had previously mentioned drawing inspiration from Meena Kumari’s character for her role in “Heeramandi.”

Richa Chadha’s Tribute to Meena Kumari

Meanwhile, Sharmin’s co-star Richa Chadha also paid tribute to Meena Kumari in “Heeramandi.” Chadha highlighted the enriching experience of observing and learning from Meena Kumari’s character in “Pakeezah.” She emphasized the depth and complexity of Kumari’s portrayal, which influenced her performance in “Heeramandi.”

About Heeramandi

</excerpt>

My thoughts about commonality in female characters triggered while watching the opulent web series Heeramandi conceptualised by Sanjay Leela Bhansali . Sailing through the mesmerising flow of events in series, I encapsulated the idea how women, the finest of nature’s creation, are similar in every aspect, every move, every characteristic.

The foremost ,the fundamental aspect of every woman’s being, their yearning for dignity. Love, understanding and security from male counterparts therefore play crucial role in her quest for dignity. Additionally her ability to give birth and nurture life represent her significant strength, underscoring her vital role in continuity and growth of society.

Endowed with the natural gift of motherhood every woman relates to other’s experience. While this understanding may get clouded by worldly factors but remain deeply rooted in psyche of women. The director skillfully explorers this aspect , portraying successfully seemingly intricate relationships between female characters in a nuanced and artistic manner.

Furthermore through their interactions and acts, the series highlight the resilience, empathy and solidarity that exist among women despite the challenges they may face.
Each character undergoes a transformation, thats another common trait. Mallikajaan’s journey is indeed captivating arc.

From a passionate young girl to matriarchal head of her establishment, her evolvement and final transformation revealing her true self, post having lost her beloved daughter Alamzeb to a nawab’s revolutionary son, in whom she had pinned hopes of her worthy successor to the dramatic turn of events and her final reconciliation with what destiny opens for her , represents a similar kind of journey every woman goes through. Other characters be it Fareedan, Bebbo jaan, Saima, Alamzeb all go about evolving, reclaiming their narratives.

Heeramandi beautifully portrays their evolution, showcasing journey from displaying their traits of obsessiveness , jealousy, intrigue and revenge to embracing finer qualities such as love, empathy, sacrifice and solidarity.

This collective transformation represents a profound liberation and victory for women as they transcend societal expectations and limitations to find strength in unity and support.

</excerpt>

Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s ‘Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar’, which premiered on Netflix on May 1, is set against the backdrop of pre-independence India. The series delves into the lives of courtesans in Lahore’s Heera Mandi, exploring themes of love, betrayal, power, and resilience through its well-written female characters. These layered individuals highlight different shades of womanhood through their actions. Here is a closer look at the female characters of ‘Heeramandi’ and their journeys.

Mallikajaan (Manisha Koirala):

The matriarch and ruler of Heera Mandi, Mallikajaan is a formidable figure who governs the courtesans with an iron fist. Her ruthlessness and scheming mind ensure her dominance in the bazaar. She embodies power and control. “Heeramandi main angrezon ka nahi…Mallikajaan ka sikka chalta hai.” This line encapsulates her supremacy, indicating that in Heeramandi, her rule is absolute, even over the British.

However, at the same time, Mallikajaan’s vulnerability is poignantly displayed in a scene at the police station where she negotiates for her daughter’s release and even expresses a willingness to sacrifice her dignity for her loved ones..

Fareedan (Sonakshi Sinha):

Fareedan is Mallikajaan’s rival, driven by a desire for revenge and power. She is manipulative and ambitious. She aims to usurp Mallikajaan’s position. Fareedan returns with a vendetta against Mallikajaan for her mother’s murder. She is driven by revenge but eventually forms a partnership with Mallikajaan to fight against their common enemy—the British. “Teer nishane pe laga hai meri jaan. Aur haath bhi.” This exchange underlines her resolve and the physical manifestation of her quest for vengeance.

Bibbojaan (Aditi Rao Hydari):

Bibbojaan is portrayed as a delicate yet resilient courtesan involved in the independence movement. She has a fragile appearance but pocesses inner strength, representing the duality of vulnerability and power. She inherits her mother’s fierce spirit but channels it into the fight for independence. Her rebellious nature and ultimate sacrifice highlight her courage and the complex legacy of defiance she carries from her mother “Sharafat humne choodh di, mohabbat ne hume chhodh diya, ab sirf bagawat humari zindagi ko mayne de sakti hai.” This line signifies her transformation from a courtesan to a freedom fighter, indicating her belief that rebellion is now the sole purpose of her life.

Lajwanti “Lajjo” (Richa Chadha):

Lajjo is a tragic figure, an alcoholic courtesan longing for love and freedom. Her character is defined by her hopeless romanticism and deep-seated sorrow, making her one of the most poignant characters. She declares “Humari mohabbat koi karobar nahi hai” emphasising that her love is not a transaction but a deep, genuine yearning. This sentiment underscores her despair and the purity of her desires, contrasting sharply with the harsh realities of her life.

Waheeda (Sanjeeda Sheikh):

Waheeda’s character arc involves a fall from grace due to a disfiguring scar, representing the ephemeral nature of beauty and the quest for redemption. Her struggle is both external and internal, as she seeks to redefine her worth beyond physical appearance. In her moments of vulnerability, she poignantly asks, “Kya Firoz Sahab ab adhe minute ka bhi ehsaan jateyenge aap,” highlighting her deep-seated pain and the struggle for dignity in a world that often measures her by her looks alone.

Alamzeb “Alam” (Sharmin Segal):

Alam, Mallikajaan’s youngest daughter, aspires to be a poet rather than a courtesan, yearning for love, freedom, and artistic expression. Her poetic soul finds solace in her writings, and this desire for genuine connection draws her to Tajdar. He represents the world beyond her confined life, igniting her creativity and fueling her desire to break free from societal expectations.

Alam’s love for Tajdar is not mere infatuation but a desperate attempt at finding a meaningful life. Through him, she envisions a future defined by her poetry and heart, not superficial standards. Believing that “mohabbat aur bagawat ke beech koi lakker nahi hoti, isq aur inquilab ke beech koi fark nahi hota,” Alam sees love and rebellion as intertwined. Her love for Tajdar becomes the cornerstone of her rebellion as she strives for a life true to herself, beyond imposed boundaries.

These characters, each with their unique shades and complexities, form the heart of “Heeramandi,” offering a deep dive into the multifaceted lives of women in a patriarchal society. Their stories, ambitions, and struggles are intertwined with the historical context of India’s fight for independence, making the series a rich tapestry of personal and political narratives. All episodes of “Heeramandi” are now streaming on Netflix, inviting viewers to immerse themselves in this compelling portrayal of resilience and rebellion.

In an interview with Zoom TV, Aditi responded to the viral video of her performance in the song “Saiyaan Hatto Jaao.”

Aditi expressed uncertainty about whether her walk is accurately termed the “Gajagamini walk,” stating, “I want to ask somebody, Sanjay sir, my dance teacher, what is it? Is it the Gajagamini walk, the swan walk? What walk is that I don’t know! I’ll say it was what Sanjay sir asked me to do. I followed Sanjay sir and what he told me.” She acknowledged the existence of similar walks in various dance forms like Kathak, such as the “Mayur chaal” (peacock walk) and “Gajagamini” (walk of seduction).

Describing the creative process behind the scene, she mentioned, “He (Sanjay) is very good at spotting magic on the spot and he created a lot of nuances in the process.” Aditi also shared an anecdote about Bhansali’s appreciation for her appearance, even though she had expressed concerns about her weight post-Covid. She recalled, “He said, ‘No you look beautiful. Let’s shoot.’ I really value that. That’s why I say he is an incredible teacher.”

</excerpt>

Sanjay Leela Bhansali made his OTT debut with ‘Heeramandi- The Diamond Bazaar’, the eight-episode web series that premiered on Netflix on May 1. Bhansali is a titan in the realm of Indian cinema. His filmmaking features a blend of grandeur, artistry, and layered storytelling. During an illustrious career, spanning nearly 27 years, he has captivated audiences with cinematic gems and left an indelible mark on the cultural landscape. Today, let us take a closer look at his work to decode his unrivaled approach to storytelling.

Artistic and Aesthetic Brilliance

Unparalleled aesthetic brilliance is at the core of his cinematic vision. His films are visual feasts, characterised by lavish sets, regal costumes, and a maximalist approach that transports viewers into a realm of opulence and grandeur. Devdas” with its opulent sets and period costumes, and “Padmaavat” with its breathtaking visuals and intricate detailing are shining examples of the same.

Empathy and Nuanced Portrayals

One of Bhansali’s greatest strengths is his ability to highlight the complexities of his characters. Particularly notable is his depiction of female characters. He elevates them to the status of cult figures and also delves into their vulnerabilities. Films like “Gangubai Kathiawadi” and “Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam” showcase his expertise in crafting emotionally gripping narratives with strong female protagonists.

Tragic Love Stories and With Strong Messages

Bhansali’s films often revolve around tragic love stories that resonate with audiences. He explores the inherent injustice in denying individuals the right to love freely. His narratives often deal with courtesans, sex workers, and historical figures caught in fierce romances. Examples include “Goliyon Ki Raasleela Ram-Leela,” a modern-day Romeo and Juliet tale, and “Bajirao Mastani,” depicting the ill-fated romance between Peshwa Bajirao and Mastani.

Authenticity and Commitment to Craft

A hallmark of Bhansali’s work is his unwavering commitment to authenticity. Whether delving into historical narratives like “Bajirao Mastani” or portraying contemporary struggles in films like “Black,” he tries to ensure a genuine representation of characters. He also attempts to bring their settings to life. This authenticity and his passion for every minute detail help his films offer fans an immersive experience.

Musical Mastery and Timeless Melodies

Bhansali’s films are synonymous with soul-stirring music that forms an integral part of the storytelling. These compositions capture the essence of traditional Indian music and also feature modern elements. Songs like “Aankhon Ki” from “Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam” and “Binte Dil” from “Padmaavat” have become iconic, showcasing Bhansali’s mastery over music and his ability to weave songs into the narrative.

Final Thoughts

In conclusion, Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s contributions to Indian cinema serve as a testament to the enduring power of storytelling in capturing the complexities of the human nature and leaving an indelible impact on audiences worldwide.

All eight episodes of Heeramandi, which focuses on the lives of ‘tawaifs’ or courtesans from the red-light district of Heera Mandi in Lahore, were released on Netflix on May 1.

</excerpt>

Jason Shah has garnered attention with his intense portrayal of Cartwright, a menacing British officer, in Heeramandi. Directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali, the eight-episode period drama series centres on the heated rivalry between Mallikajaan (Manisha Koirala, the ‘huzoor’ of Heera Mandi, and Fareedan (Sonakshi Sinha), her late sister’s daughter.

In an exclusive interview with The Daily Guardian, Jason said that he didn’t go out of his way to prepare for the role as he wanted his performance to be ‘subtle’. He added that he didn’t want the character to have ‘washboard abs’. Additionally, he spoke about working with ‘Sona’ and the Dil Se star.

What made you give the nod to Heeramandi?

The title itself sounded interesting. Then there was an opportunity to work with such a great director. The prospect of working opposite so many actresses was exciting as it would give me the chance to be exposed to Bollywood in a different way. I have so far worked opposite the men.

How did you prepare for your role in the series?

I didn’t do much preparation for the role. I simply wanted to keep the role as subtle as possible. Most of the people I have worked with so far wanted a very one-track mind and over-the-top British individual. This time, I wanted to do it subtly as anger isn’t always expressed through loud actions.

Did you follow a fitness or diet regime to get the right look for Heeramandi?

I didn’t want to have that cliched washboard six-pack abs look. I wanted it to feel more like a British officer. I even had a mutton burger on set so that I felt a bit not regular in terms of my physique. I don’t think officers back then had six-pack abs.

How was the experience of working with Sanjay Leela Bhansali?

I have worked with a lot of directors in my career. However, my interactions with Sanjay sir were few and far between That said, based on the few interactions we did have, I feel he is a perfectionist.

How are Sonakshi Sinha and Manisha Koirala as co-stars?

Sonakshi is a hard-working girl. I was also impressed by Manisha Koirala’s dedication. I think she brought an extreme intensity to the show. I learnt a lot from these actresses.

Lastly, how do you deal with negative feedback?

I do not see anything as negative in this regard. If someone tells you that they didn’t like your work and you can receive it with an open heart, it can mature you as an actor. I always ask for honest feedback as it can help you grow. However, if you have a bunch of man-pleasers around you then you are not ready to grow.

I am now launching my own music label ‘Bhansali Music.’ I wish the audience to experience the same joy and spiritual connect that I feel when I listen to or create music.”

Through Bhansali Music, the filmmaker aims to showcase his creative talent in music, collaborating with skilled musicians and artists to produce captivating compositions for his films and memorable independent albums.

Bhansali’s films have always been praised for their mesmerizing music, with songs like ‘Deewani Mastani’ and ‘Lal Ishq’ resonating deeply with audiences. ‘Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar’ is set to stream on Netflix and marks Bhansali’s debut in the OTT space.
In a historic moment, the Miss World finale returns to India after 28 years, with the event taking place at the Jio World Convention Centre in Mumbai on March 9. Indian viewers can watch the finale live on Sony LIV.

Taking OTT to the next level, Bhansali now brings his majestic signature flair to stories of love and betrayal in the lives of courtesans in pre-independence India with his new project ‘Heera Mandi’
Given that ‘Heera Mandi’ is the country’s biggest OTT offering in the global arena, the stakes are even higher and the filmmaker’s vision for it even more ambitious.

While details are under wraps, not surprising since Bhansali has always chosen to work privately and passionately until he is ready to present his project to the world, a source reveals that a massive set of close to 1,60,000 sq. ft has been constructed for the OTT series. The director is personally looking into its minutest details from the actor’s looks, the intricacies on set, to art design and the lighting in every scene.
