</excerpt>

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) announced that the whole country, including Delhi, had been covered by the southwest monsoon as of June 29—nine days earlier than its scheduled time.

The oncoming of the monsoon over the capital took two days more than the regular date of June 27, but overall coverage was much earlier than the regular July 8 mark. IMD has also issued a yellow alert for Delhi for Sunday, predicting the steady occurrence of light to moderate rain.

Monsoon Covers Entire Country

In a statement on Sunday, the IMD confirmed that the monsoon had extended to the rest of Rajasthan, western Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, and Delhi. “The southwest monsoon has advanced further into the remaining parts of Rajasthan, West Uttar Pradesh, and Haryana, and the whole Delhi area today. Hence, it covered the whole country on June 29, instead of the normal date of July 8,” the department said.

Last year, monsoon coverage finished on July 2—six days ahead of schedule. This year, the trend was repeated. The monsoon arrived in Kerala on May 24, a week ahead of schedule. It reached Mumbai by May 26, almost two weeks before the normal onset date of June 11.

Early Start, Then a Temporary Stall

Even after the premature onset in the south, the monsoon underwent a ‘break’ in activity in the first week of June. The IMD reported its advance march halting before resuming on June 12.

IMD repeatedly delayed and revised the forecast for the monsoon onset over Delhi. The IMD initially forecast the arrival of the monsoon in Delhi on June 24. It then corrected the date to June 24 on June 20, then asserted that it would arrive within 36 hours on June 24. The period continued to change, and June 26 saw the forecast that the monsoon would envelop the nation within 3–4 days—without specifically mentioning Delhi.

Delhi Sees No Significant Rainfall

On Saturday, Delhi received limited rain, primarily in its southwest, south, and eastern regions. The Safdarjung weather station, the capital’s base station, registered only ‘trace’ precipitation during the day. However, surrounding places such as Noida, Ghaziabad, and Gurugram witnessed brief, heavy showers.

The IMD has put out a yellow alert for Delhi on Sunday, warning of light to moderate rain in some areas of the city.

Earliest Onset Since 2020

This is the earliest onset of monsoon over the whole nation since 2020 when it ended nationwide coverage on June 26. Previously, this early coverage occurred on June 26 in 2015 and as early as June 16 in 2013.

The IMD is keeping a close eye on progress and rains distribution over the next few days, particularly over rain-deficient areas. India has officially welcomed the onset of monsoon—early, extensive, and closely watched—till now.

</excerpt>

Bengaluru has been grappling with relentless rains over the past few days, prompting civic authorities to scramble to clear blockages and pump out stagnant water to alleviate traffic congestion. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned that the heavy rainfall will persist until October 18, affecting not only Bengaluru but also the coastal, north interior, and south interior regions of Karnataka.

Viral Video Highlights Safety Concerns

A video shared by the Bengaluru Traffic Police, showcasing two civic workers on their hands and knees clearing clogged drains near Bellandur, has gone viral on social media. The clip serves as a reminder of the slow-moving traffic conditions resulting from the rains, but it has also ignited a wave of criticism regarding the safety measures in place for these workers.

Calls for Better Equipment and Safety Gear

Outraged social media users expressed their dissatisfaction with the lack of protective gear for the workers. One user tagged Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister D Shivakumar, emphasizing the necessity of providing basic safety equipment such as shoes, helmets, and jackets. “Civic workers need proper gear; they aren’t going to a stadium to play cricket,” the user remarked.

Another user echoed these sentiments, stating, “This is shameful. Please equip them with personal protection gear to protect them from snakes, live wires, etc., and provide the necessary tools to perform their duty effectively. A world-class city must provide a safe working environment.”

Health Risks Highlighted

Concerns were also raised about health risks associated with unsafe working conditions. A doctor pointed out that such practices could lead to leptospirosis, a disease that poses severe health risks, including kidney damage and respiratory issues. One user lamented, “Brand Bangalore has no funds to meet the basic necessities of civic workers; it’s disgusting and pitiable.”

Workers’ Perspective

While many criticized the lack of safety measures, some users pointed out that the workers themselves often opt not to wear protective gear, believing it hinders their ability to work efficiently. “Unfortunately, I’ve seen many workers who feel they cannot work with gloves and shoes the whole day, as they cannot handle the sweat,” one comment stated.

As Bengaluru continues to face challenges from the ongoing rains, the debate around worker safety and municipal responsibility intensifies. The city’s ability to provide a safe working environment for its civic workers will be crucial in maintaining both public health and effective city management.

</excerpt>

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin and Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin have actively taken stock of the rain situation in Chennai as the city experiences heavy downpours. Both leaders are overseeing relief measures to ensure public safety and mitigate the impact of the relentless rainfall.

On Tuesday, Chief Minister MK Stalin personally inspected the rain-affected areas in Chennai. During his visit, he was seen interacting with rescue and relief workers, even sharing a cup of tea with them. His presence highlighted the government’s commitment to addressing the situation and ensuring swift relief efforts.

Deputy CM Reviews Rainfall Impact and Safety Measures

Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin inspected the Integrated Control and Command Centre in Chennai and provided updates on the rainfall. He stated that the highest recorded rainfall, approximately 6 cm, was reported in the Sholinganallur and Teynampet areas. On average, Chennai received around 5 cm of rainfall in the last 24 hours, but Udhayanidhi assured that “things are very much under control.”

He also reported that no power cuts had occurred in any part of the city, and fallen trees were being cleared by teams across eight affected areas. The deputy CM confirmed that 26 teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) were stationed in Chennai and coastal areas, ready for any emergency.

Water stagnation was reported in 300 locations, and Udhayanidhi Stalin confirmed that pumping operations were underway to drain the affected areas. He added that two subways had been closed due to flooding. In response to health concerns, Tamil Nadu has launched special health camps across the state, with 1,000 camps set up, including 100 in Chennai alone, to provide medical aid during the rainy season.

Government Declares Holidays for Schools and Colleges

In light of the heavy rain forecast, the Tamil Nadu government declared a holiday for schools and colleges in Chennai, Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram, and Chengalpattu districts on Tuesday. The decision aimed to ensure the safety of students and staff as parts of the city experienced severe waterlogging, particularly in areas like Koyambedu.

Earlier, Deputy CM Udhayanidhi Stalin surveyed the Narayanapuram lake banks and the canals on Ambedkar Road, which carry surplus water from Kilikattalai Lake to Narayanapuram Lake. He also met with residents to hear their concerns and instructed officials to take appropriate action.

An advisory has been issued to fishermen, urging them not to venture into the sea due to the rough weather. Additionally, the Chief Minister has instructed authorities to advise IT companies to allow employees to work from home from October 15 to 18 to reduce traffic and ensure public safety during the heavy rains.

CM MK Stalin previously held a review meeting with senior officials to assess the situation and provide necessary instructions. Tamil Nadu Chief Secretary N. Muruganandam has also been coordinating efforts to ensure that essential arrangements are in place to manage the ongoing rain and its potential impact on the city.

Areas in Chiapas, Oaxaca, Veracruz, Tabasco, and Guerrero are at risk of flash floods and mudslides, following last week’s devastating rains from Hurricane John that caused 22 fatalities.
</excerpt>

Heavy rainfall is expected to pummel Mexico’s southern coast as Tropical Depression Eleven-E intensifies, the US National Hurricane Center (NHC) warned on Thursday. The storm poses a risk of flooding and mudslides in regions already saturated by recent storms.

As of Thursday, the depression was located approximately 90 miles (150 km) southeast of Puerto Angel, Oaxaca, moving northeast at a slow pace of 2 mph (4 kph) and boasting maximum sustained winds of 35 mph (55 kph). Forecasters predict that it will make landfall late Thursday or early Friday, prompting a tropical storm warning for various coastal areas.

The NHC forecasts that the storm could unleash between 4 to 8 inches (10 – 20 cm) of rain, with isolated locations potentially receiving up to 12 inches (30 cm) across parts of Chiapas, Oaxaca, Veracruz, Tabasco, and coastal Guerrero. The anticipated rainfall raises concerns about life-threatening flash floods and mudslides in regions already impacted by heavy rains.

Last week, Hurricane John caused significant rainfall in some of the same areas, resulting in mudslides and at least 22 fatalities. Authorities are urging residents to remain vigilant and prepare for the impending weather conditions.

With risks of localized flooding and travel disruptions, the unsettled weather is expected to continue into next week. While southern regions face storms, Scotland and Northern Ireland will enjoy drier, calmer conditions.
</excerpt>

The UK is currently experiencing a series of thunderstorms and heavy rainfall, with unsettled weather causing disruptions across the country. A yellow weather warning is in effect for much of southern England and Wales, particularly affecting Cornwall, which has seen the most severe impacts, according to the BBC.

The Met Office reports that Cornwall has been especially hard hit by thunderstorms, featuring large hail and lightning. Heavy rain is expected to spread, raising concerns about localized flooding and travel disruptions. The weather warning, which covers Wales, southwest England, the Midlands, and parts of southeast England, is set to remain until midnight on Sunday.

Meteorologist Becky Mitchell cautioned that heavy rainfall has created difficult driving conditions in Cornwall. Thunderstorms have also affected other regions, including Wales and London, with Surrey and Oxfordshire reporting lightning strikes. Mitchell noted the potential for more widespread thunderstorms as temperatures rise.

In addition to heavy showers and hail forecast for parts of Wales and southern England, Friday and Saturday saw thousands of lightning strikes recorded across southern England, leading to localized flash flooding. A tornado in Hampshire caused damage in Aldershot.

Looking ahead, unsettled weather is expected to persist into next week, with further risks of localized flooding. Heavy showers and storms will continue through Sunday, accompanied by another yellow weather warning for rain.

While southern regions face these weather challenges, Scotland, Northern Ireland, and areas around the Irish Sea can expect drier and calmer conditions, with plenty of sunshine and pleasant temperatures. However, this reprieve will be brief as autumn approaches, with the equinox marking the end of summer. As winds shift northward, cooler air and low-pressure systems will bring widespread cloud and rain, leading to decreased daytime temperatures and potential gales. Although October may bring occasional warm spells, residents should prepare for the inevitable autumn chill.

Thousands of homes have been damaged, and emergency services are on high alert. Other affected countries include Austria, the Czech Republic, Hungary, and Slovakia, facing similar weather challenges.
</excerpt>

Floods triggered by Storm Boris have claimed the lives of four people in Romania, as heavy rains and strong winds caused widespread devastation across central and eastern Europe. Since Thursday, the storm has impacted Austria, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Romania, and Slovakia, bringing torrential downpours and high winds.

Romania’s southeastern region of Galati has been the hardest hit, with rescue services reporting the discovery of four bodies and severe damage to 5,000 homes. Hundreds have been evacuated across 19 regions of the country. In Slobozia Conachi village, over 700 homes were flooded, with Mayor Emil Dragomir calling it “a catastrophe of epic proportions.” Romanian Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu visited the affected area, while President Klaus Iohannis expressed his condolences and highlighted the growing effects of climate change on Europe.

Elsewhere, the Czech Republic has mobilized 100,000 firefighters, responding to nearly 2,900 incidents caused by fallen trees and flooding. Thousands of homes remain without power, and a hospital in Brno had to be evacuated. Slovakia declared a state of emergency in its capital, Bratislava, while Poland faces similar challenges in the southwest, closing roads and halting train services.

Austria has seen wind speeds reach up to 146 kilometers per hour, with parts of the country, including the Tyrol, blanketed in snow an unusual event for mid-September. Authorities are bracing for further disruptions as the storm continues to sweep across the region.

</excerpt>

The people of Gujarat have once again demonstrated that nothing can dampen their love for Garba, as residents of Vadodara were captured on video performing the dance in knee-deep water. Likely recorded during Janmashtami celebrations, the video has since gone viral.

The footage showcases a lively group of individuals—ranging from teens to adults—dancing in perfect harmony despite the flooded streets. With the vibrant beats of Garba music filling the air, they executed traditional steps, turning the waterlogged roads into an impromptu dance floor.

In the same video, another group of people can be seen gearing up for the Dahi-Handi celebrations, a customary event during Janmashtami. The video has garnered widespread attention, including from industrialist Anand Mahindra, who shared it on X (formerly Twitter) with the caption, “Gujarat aur Garba, Ek gazab ka rishta…Unstoppable.” The post quickly gained popularity, with many applauding the people of Gujarat for their resilience and deep-rooted love for their traditions.

Meanwhile, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued warnings about a new weather system—a well-marked low-pressure area originating from the Bay of Bengal—expected to affect Gujarat starting September 1. This system could bring heavy to very heavy rainfall across various parts of the state.

According to the IMD, Navsari and Valsad might experience heavy rains on Sunday, while Vadodara and Chhota Udepur could see intense downpours on Monday. By Tuesday, the storm system is predicted to cause heavy rainfall in Anand, Panchmahal, Dahod, Bharuch, Bhavnagar, and Narmada, with very heavy rain likely to persist in Narmada and Bharuch on Wednesday.

Additionally, the deep depression currently hovering over Gujarat has intensified into a cyclonic storm named ‘Asna,’ positioned near the Kutch coast. Moving west-northwestward at a speed of 6 km/h, the storm adds further concern for the already inundated regions.

As the country braces for Cyclone Asna, the Pakistan Meteorological Department warned of strong winds and heavy rainfall in Sindh and Balochistan, though the cyclone is expected to weaken before reaching Oman.
</excerpt>

At least 24 people were killed across Pakistan on Friday as heavy rains lashed various regions, with the country preparing for the potential impact of Cyclone Asna. While the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) indicated that the cyclone is unlikely to directly strike the coastal areas, it warned of strong winds and moderate to heavy rainfall in the provinces of Sindh and Balochistan.

In Upper Dir, a devastating landslide triggered by incessant rain caused a roof to collapse, killing 13 members of a single family in Ramyal village. The incident occurred on Friday morning as the family was inside their home. Meanwhile, in Sindh, nine more fatalities were reported in the Jamshoro, Dadu, and Mirpurkhas districts.

Widespread Damage and Injuries Amid Severe Weather

The heavy rains have also led to widespread destruction, with over 30 people injured as floods ruptured sewers, breached dykes, and swept away numerous mud houses. The PMD has issued advisories, predicting continued severe weather conditions.

Cyclone Asna’s Path and Historic Significance

According to a PMD advisory issued at 10:30 PM local time on Friday, Cyclone Asna has moved westward and was located approximately 120 km south of Karachi, 180 km southwest of Thatta, and 440 km east-southeast of Gwadar. The system is expected to continue moving west-northwest before shifting west-southwest.

PMD Director General Mahr Sahibzad Khan highlighted that this is the first time in 60 years that such a cyclone has formed in the region. Chief Meteorologist Dr. Sardar Sarfaraz emphasized that Saturday would be critical in assessing the cyclone’s impact, though it is expected to weaken at sea before reaching Oman. Coastal areas of Balochistan are likely to experience heavier rainfall than those in Sindh.

Rescue operations are in full swing in flood-affected areas, with teams from the NDRF, State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), and three Army columns actively relocating people to safer locations. The Indian Air Force and the Coast Guard are also involved in rescue and relief efforts. On Tuesday alone, at least nine people lost their lives due to incidents like wall collapses and drowning across different parts of the state.

As rescue operations continue and rains persist, authorities urge residents in affected areas to remain indoors and prioritize their safety.

Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel directed officials on Sunday to evacuate people from low-lying areas to safer locations, according to ANI. The Chief Minister’s Office reported that the districts most affected by the downpour include Valsad, Tapi, Navsari, Surat, Narmada, and Panchmahal in South Gujarat.

The IMD predicts ongoing ‘heavy to very heavy’ rainfall in several areas, with isolated instances of ‘extremely heavy’ rain expected in the south Gujarat districts of Vadodara, Surat, Bharuch, Navsari, Valsad, as well as in Amreli and Bhavnagar in the Saurashtra region, continuing until Tuesday morning. Additionally, ‘heavy to very heavy’ rain with isolated ‘extremely heavy’ downpours is anticipated in the districts of Anand, Rajkot, Jamnagar, Porbandar, Morbi, Dwarka, and Kutch on Tuesday.

Impact on Normal Life:

Officials reported that several hundred people were relocated to safety in Valsad and Navsari districts as continuous rainfall over the past 48 hours inundated low-lying areas, severely disrupting daily life and traffic. According to the State Emergency Operation Centre, Vapi taluka in Valsad district recorded 326 mm of rainfall in 24 hours ending at 6 am on Sunday, the highest in the state, while Khergam in Navsari received 248 mm since 6 am.

Chief Minister Patel also communicated with the collectors of the affected districts to receive detailed updates on the situation, ensuring full support from the SDRF and NDRF.

Valsad SDM Astha Solanki stated, “There has been around 120 mm of rainfall in the city of Valsad since last night… Keeping this in mind, the water level in Kashmir Nagar of Valsad has started rising. So people are being shifted from here. So far, about a hundred families have been shifted.”

Due to rainfall in catchment areas, the water level at the Sardar Sarovar Narmada dam significantly increased, reaching 135.30 meters on Sunday, just below its full capacity of 138.68 meters. In response, 15 radial gates were opened to discharge water as the dam received 265,748 cusecs from upstream.

As of Sunday, Gujarat’s 206 reservoirs held 3.64 lakh million cubic feet of water, 65% of their total capacity. Among these, 72 were on high alert, and 15 were on alert due to the rapid rise in water levels. The state has received 81.81% of its average annual rainfall this season, with south Gujarat receiving 97.52%, Kutch 90.18%, and Saurashtra 84.92%.

</excerpt>

Flash floods triggered by the latest monsoon rains have inundated streets in southern Pakistan and blocked a crucial highway in the north, officials reported on Monday. The death toll from rain-related incidents since July 1 has now reached 209.

In the past 24 hours, 14 people have died in Punjab province, according to Irfan Ali from the provincial disaster management authority. The monsoon season, which spans from July to September, has been particularly severe, with climate change being blamed for the increasing intensity of rainfall.

The majority of fatalities have occurred in the provinces of Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and Sindh. Although this year’s rainfall is significant, it is less severe compared to 2022, when torrential rains caused widespread flooding, claimed 1,739 lives, and resulted in $30 billion in damages.

Zaheer Ahmed Babar from the Pakistan Meteorological Department indicated that the heavy rains are expected to persist throughout the week. Southern Pakistan, particularly the Sukkur district in Sindh, has experienced severe flooding, prompting evacuation efforts to move affected residents to safer locations.

In the north, heavy rains have led to landslides that have blocked parts of the Karakorum highway and damaged bridges, disrupting traffic. The government has advised tourists to avoid the affected areas.

Since the onset of the monsoon season, over 2,200 homes have been damaged across Pakistan. The National Disaster Management Authority reported that relief efforts are underway, including providing medical aid and food to those affected.

Neighboring Afghanistan has also faced flood-related issues. On Sunday, three people died when their vehicle was swept away by floods in Ghazni. Earlier in May, floods in northern Afghanistan resulted in 84 deaths and extensive damage.

During his visit, Kumar reviewed the condition of the Rudraprayag-Gaurikund National Highway and directed officials to expedite repair work. He was accompanied by officials from the Public Works Department (PWD), the National Highway Division, and the Irrigation Department.

The inspection focused on the damaged stretch of the highway between Km 72 and Km 75, where earth movers were actively engaged in repairs. Kumar emphasized the need for swift action and highlighted the importance of identifying additional areas prone to landslides that could pose future risks.

National Highway officials informed Kumar that a proposal had been submitted to THDC India Limited to fortify vulnerable sections of the route. Kumar instructed that the most sensitive locations be prioritized within this proposal.

Kumar also assessed the work being done by the Irrigation Department along both sides of the Son River in Sonprayag. He stated that work on the left bank of the river would commence within one to two days, while repairs on the right bank should begin immediately. Additionally, he inspected the Sitapur parking area and plans to discuss further measures with the district and police administrations.

Kumar assured that all necessary assistance from the state government would be provided to ensure the smooth execution of these critical infrastructure projects.

</excerpt>

Heavy rains and flooding from Typhoon Gaemi have resulted in at least 30 deaths and left 35 people missing across eight towns in the southern Chinese province of Hunan, state-run news agency Xinhua reported on Thursday. The typhoon, which made landfall in China on July 25, brought severe weather conditions including winds reaching up to 110 kph (70 mph) and intense rainfall.

Rescue Operations and Infrastructure Recovery

On Thursday, rescue teams reached the eight towns in Zixing City that had been isolated due to destroyed infrastructure and power grids since last Sunday. By noon on August 1, local authorities confirmed that roads, electricity, and communications in the most severely affected areas had been largely restored, and significant progress had been made in search and rescue efforts. Despite this, rescue operations are ongoing.

Emergency Response and Relief Efforts

In response to the flooding, China has elevated its emergency response level to support local disaster relief efforts and ensure basic living security for those affected. The Ministry of Emergency Management announced measures to provide enhanced assistance to the impacted areas.

Typhoon Gaemi’s Impact and Path

Typhoon Gaemi initially made landfall in China on the evening of July 25, continuing west-northwest and causing extensive rainfall. Forecasters predicted rainfall between 150 to 250 mm (6 to 10 inches), with higher amounts up to 400 mm (15 inches) in elevated regions and along the coast.

The storm had earlier caused severe flooding in Taiwan, where rainfall in five townships exceeded 1,285 mm (50 inches). Gaemi’s path was altered by Taiwan’s mountainous terrain, leading to a prolonged offshore period and a loop near the Hualien coastline rather than its expected landfall on July 24. The typhoon also exacerbated monsoon rains, leading to significant flooding in the Philippine capital.

Ongoing Challenges and Forecast

The widespread impact of Typhoon Gaemi highlights ongoing challenges for rescue and recovery operations in the affected regions. Authorities continue to address the aftermath of the storm and provide aid to those in need.

Gujarat Health Minister Rushikesh Patel visited flood-affected areas in the Borsas region of Anand district, addressing concerns about water-borne diseases by deploying the Arogya team and doctors.

Heavy rains have severely impacted various districts in Gujarat, causing at least eight deaths, raising the toll to 61 as of July 24. Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel conducted an aerial survey of Saurashtra’s coastal villages, particularly Jamnagar and Devbhoomi Dwarka, to assess the damage. In a review meeting, he emphasized a zero-casualty approach for the district administration to ensure people’s safety during the rains. The downpour over the past five days has led to waterlogging in low-lying areas, significantly affecting normal life in the coastal districts of Saurashtra, including Devbhoomi Dwarka, Jamnagar, and Porbandar.

</excerpt>

Pimpri-Chinchwad has faced severe disruptions since Tuesday due to heavy rain. The rising water level of the Pavana river has resulted in multiple tree falls by Wednesday, damaging vehicles and causing traffic jams. Additionally, a fire broke out, and a wall collapsed at Zero Boys Chowk in Sant Tukaram Nagar, prompting quick responses from disaster management and fire brigade teams. By 4 pm, the fire department reported 10 fallen trees.

Continuous rain over the past 24 hours has disrupted life in Pimpri-Chinchwad and Maval areas, with Lonavla receiving 275 mm of rainfall. The Pavana river’s water level has increased, with the dam now over 50% full, and water has entered the Morya Gosavi temple in Chinchwad.

Morning rain created difficulties for workers and school children, many of whom navigated flooded roads in raincoats and with umbrellas. The flooding slowed traffic, particularly for two-wheeler drivers.

Tree falls in various parts of the city caused vehicle damage. Trees fell at Pimple Gurav’s Sudarshan Chowk at 7 am, Navi Sangvi district hospital at 7:30 am, in front of Tata Motors in Chinchwad at 9:30 am, near Birla Hospital in Chinchwad village at 12:08 pm, Thergaon Dange Chowk around 1 pm, and Pimpri Vaibhavnagar at 1 pm.

At 2 pm, a wall collapse at Zero Boyz Chowk in Pimpri caused significant vehicle damage. The fire brigade, which discovered a body in the riverbed, removed the fallen trees and extinguished a fire in Pradhikaran Sector 23. Fire brigade teams from Pimpri, Thergaon, Chikhali, and Talwade, including Kiran Nikalje, Sarang Mangalurkar, Suraj Punde, Ankush Bade, Shahu Vanmane, and Bhushan Yewle, responded promptly. Despite traffic being blocked at several locations due to fallen trees, the routes were cleared quickly to alleviate congestion.

Lonavla has recorded its highest rainfall of the year with 275 mm over the past eight days, causing significant flooding in several areas, including Nangargaon Adarsh Society, Narayani Dham, Valvan village near Bapdev temple, and the Valvan Nangargaon market area. The Indrayani river’s water level has also risen significantly.

Water accumulation from the past 24 hours of rainfall has stranded motorists in low-lying areas and under flyovers, leading to traffic jams and minor accidents. Many people took shelter under grade separators and metro stations, worsening congestion as parked vehicles blocked traffic flow.

</excerpt>

At least 155 individuals have lost their lives due to flooding and landslides triggered by heavy rains in Tanzania, according to Al Jazeera. Prime Minister Kassim Majaliwa, in a parliamentary address, attributed the severity of the current rainy season to the El Nino climate pattern, leading to widespread flooding and damage to infrastructure.

“The heavy El Nino rains, accompanied by strong winds, floods, and landslides in various parts of the country, have caused significant damage,” Majaliwa stated. He also pointed to unsustainable farming practices such as “slash and burn” agriculture, uncontrolled livestock grazing, and deforestation as contributing factors to the disastrous impacts of the rains.

Majaliwa reported that more than 51,000 houses and over 200,000 individuals were affected by the rains. Emergency services are working to rescue those stranded by flooding, and schools have been closed due to inundation, as per Al Jazeera.

Additionally, over 226 people have been injured due to the floods and rains in Tanzania, as heavy downpours continue to affect East Africa. The El Nino weather phenomena, which is linked to rising global temperatures, droughts, and heavy precipitation, is a natural occurrence.

The East African region has experienced unusually heavy rainfall during this rainy season, with reports of flooding also coming in from neighboring Burundi and Kenya.

On Friday evening, he also proclaimed a day off for all schools in the district until the 12th grade. Meanwhile, in light of the severe rains, Mayor Pushyamitra Bhargava convened a meeting of city authorities at the Municipal Corporation headquarters and distributed hotline numbers.
