Waterlogging and traffic snarls were reported citywide. The IMD issued an orange alert for Mumbai and a red alert for Raigad, warning of more heavy rain.
</excerpt>

Heavy rains continued to batter Mumbai and its suburbs, producing extensive waterlogging in low-lying areas and crippling transport services. The rain has not only caused traffic congestion but also disrupted local train and metro rail services throughout the city.

Mumbai saw an average of 95 mm rain in the 24 hours till 8 am on Monday, as per civic authorities quoted by PTI. The eastern suburbs got 58 mm and the western regions 75 mm. The rain toll since the start of the month has now risen to 18 dead and 65 injured, officials confirmed.

IMD Alerts Issued

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted cloudy weather and heavy rain in scattered parts of Mumbai and its suburbs for the next 24 hours. An orange alert has been called out for Mumbai, Thane, and Palghar with a warning of heavy to very heavy rain. While Raigad district has been put under a red alert in case of extremely heavy rain, particularly in the ghat parts of Pune and Satara for the next 16 hours.

High Tide and Low Tide Timings

Mumbai is likely to witness a high tide of 4.21 metres at 3:31 pm on Monday, and another one at 3.44 metres at 3:31 am on Tuesday. It is likely to witness low tides of 1.86 metres and 1.33 metres at 9:41 pm on Monday and 9:10 am on Tuesday, respectively.

Local Train and Metro Services Affected

train services on both the Central and Western Railway lines were delayed Monday morning. Commuters delayed their travels from 20 to 30 minutes.

The Mumbai Metro operations were also affected, and it was mainly seen on the Ghatkopar-Andheri-Versova line. A plastic cover torn from a construction site near Azad Nagar station fell on the overhead wires, causing a temporary suspension of services in the afternoon.

“The services are normal now. Heavy winds caused a plastic sheet from one of the under-construction sites to fly on to the overhead wire along the Azad Nagar Metro station, suspending train services,” Mumbai Metro One tweeted on X.

Airlines Issue Travel Advisories

Flight operations too were affected because of unfavorable weather conditions. IndiGo airlines also urged customers to pre-estimate extra travel time and monitor their flight status prior to traveling.
In its advisory on X, IndiGo stated, “Heavy rains are still ongoing in Mumbai, while road conditions are slow in many areas of the city. Waterlogging and low visibility are reported on some airport routes.”
SpiceJet also released a similar travel alert for guests traveling into and out of the city.

The IMD recorded 295 mm rain at Colaba, breaking the 1918 record, and issued red alerts for several regions.
</excerpt>

Mumbai saw a record weather phenomenon on Monday, May 26, 2025, when the city received its heaviest rainfall in more than a century on the first day of the monsoon season. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) said that the onset of monsoon happened a complete 16 days prior to schedule, which is the earliest over Mumbai in the last 75 years.

“Southwest Monsoon has proceeded towards Mumbai today, 26th May 2025, against the usual date of advance, 11th June. Hence, the monsoon has reached Mumbai 16 days ahead of schedule. This is the earliest monsoon advance over Mumbai from 2001–2025,” the IMD asserted in an official release.

Historic Rainfall Record Broken

The rain shower not only indicated the monsoon’s onset—it broke a century-and-a-half-old record. Figures with the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), quoted by The Indian Express, indicate that South Mumbai localities received more than 200 mm of rain between midnight and 11 a.m. alone.

The Colaba weather station, in fact, received 295 mm of rain—beating the old record of 279.4 mm on May 1918.

According to a PTI report, regional rain gauges measured by the IMD reported the following levels from 8:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Monday:

Colaba: 105.2 mm

Santacruz: 55 mm

Bandra: 68.5 mm

Juhu Airport: 63.5 mm

Chembur: 38.5 mm

Vikhroli: 37.5 mm

Mahalaxmi: 33.5 mm

Sion: 53.5 mm

Monsoon Timeline Shifted

The IMD pointed out that this year’s onset of monsoon was on May 26, as against the average date of June 11. In 2024, the rain had set in on June 6.

“Southwest monsoon made onset over Mumbai on May 26. This is the earliest onset in last 75 years,” IMD scientist Sushma Nair told PTI.

Red Alerts Issued Across the Region

As the rains continued, the IMD upgraded Mumbai’s status from an ‘orange’ alert to a ‘red’ alert, indicating the likelihood of more extreme weather. Red alerts were also announced for Thane, Raigad, and Ratnagiri districts.

Simultaneously, IMD issued warnings for other states as well. “Southwest Monsoon has further penetrated into some additional areas of central Arabian Sea, some additional areas of Maharashtra including Mumbai, Karnataka including Bengaluru, remaining areas of Tamil Nadu, some areas of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh, some additional areas of westcentral & North Bay of Bengal, Remaining areas of Mizoram, entire Tripura, Manipur, Nagaland, Arunachal Pradesh, some areas of Assam and Meghalaya, on May 26,” IMD said.

A massive 2,000-kilometre-long rain band has caused widespread flooding across Queensland. Several towns have been completely cut off due to days of continuous rainfall. The phenomenon, described as a “pseudo-monsoon,” has brought record-breaking rainfall to the region. The pseudo-monsoon is being driven by a slow-moving trough, which is pulling tropical moisture over inland Queensland. As the storm continues, the Bureau of Meteorology (BoM) has issued severe weather warnings for parts of central-west and south-west Queensland. The downpour is expected to last until midweek, with more rain anticipated.
Record Rainfall and Widespread Flooding

The intense rainfall due to pseudo monsoon has already broken monthly records across many regions. In some areas, the rain has been so heavy that it has delivered a year’s worth of rainfall in just a few days. For example, in the 24 hours to Wednesday morning, central-west Queensland recorded more than 200mm of rain. Specifically, Bogewong saw 230mm of rain, and Stonehenge recorded 203mm. Winton, known as Australia’s dinosaur capital, also set a new daily rainfall record with 158mm.

As a result, rivers like the Bulloo, Thomson, and Georgina have flooded, leading to major flood warnings. Many other inland rivers are also facing moderate flooding. With the storm being slow-moving, the floodwaters are not draining quickly, worsening the situation. The ongoing downpour is affecting many regions, including towns like Quilpie, Windorah, Jundah, and Boulia. These areas are struggling to cope with the massive amounts of water, which continue to rise as the storm slowly moves through.

Shifting Weather and Regional Impacts

The rainfall is expected to shift southward by Friday, bringing wet weather to Brisbane and possibly Sydney. However, some relief is expected by Sunday, as the storm begins to ease. Even so, the damage caused by the floods will take time to recover from. Meanwhile, other parts of Australia are facing contrasting weather conditions. Adelaide, for example, is experiencing a dry and hot March. The city has received only 13.2mm of rain this year, and its reservoirs are at their lowest levels in over 20 years. Similarly, Perth and the Pilbara are facing temperatures that will exceed 39°C, marking one of the longest stretches of hot weather in decades.

Climate Change and Increasing Weather Extremes

This extreme weather event is a stark reminder of the growing unpredictability of Australia’s climate. Scientists have warned that the climate crisis is contributing to more frequent and severe weather events. The Bureau of Meteorology has stated that Australia’s land surface has warmed by 1.5°C since 1910, which is fueling more extreme weather. This warming is leading to increasingly intense wet and dry weather patterns across the country. As Australia continues to experience both extreme rainfall and intense heat, it is clear that the impacts of climate change are already being felt in everyday life.

</excerpt>

Cyclone Fengal is poised to make landfall along the Tamil Nadu coast tomorrow evening, prompting the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to issue a red alert for several southern states due to anticipated heavy rainfall.

As of this evening, the cyclone is situated approximately 300-350 km from the Tamil Nadu coastline. Ananda Das, Head of the IMD’s Cyclonic Division, stated, “The landfall is expected tomorrow evening on the coast of Tamil Nadu. During landfall, wind speeds are projected to be 70-80 km/h, with gusts up to 90 km/h.”

The IMD has forecasted heavy to extremely heavy rainfall across various regions:

Coastal districts of North Tamil Nadu and South Andhra Pradesh: Anticipated to receive heavy to extremely heavy rainfall.

Interior Tamil Nadu: Expected to experience heavy rainfall on November 30.

From Tamil Nadu to Kerala and interior Karnataka: Heavy rainfall is predicted until December 1.

In response to these forecasts, a red alert has been issued for the affected areas.

The Puducherry Fisheries Department has advised fishermen to avoid venturing into the sea and to relocate their fishing boats and equipment to higher grounds to prevent damage. Their statement noted, “The cyclone is currently situated in the Bay of Bengal, expected to move west-northwest and cross the coast near Puducherry tomorrow (30.11.2024) around noon. During this time, wind speeds are expected to reach 70-80 km/h, with gusts up to 90 km/h.”

Additionally, the Puducherry Port has raised warning signal number 7, indicating that a cyclone is likely to cross the coast over or near the port.

Earlier today, the IMD announced, “The Deep Depression over Southwest Bay of Bengal intensified into Cyclonic Storm FENGAL over the same region at 2:30 pm today, November 29.”

Preceding the cyclone’s landfall, heavy rainfall has already caused significant damage. In Tamil Nadu’s Nagapattinam district, over 800 acres of paddy crops have been submerged, leaving farmers in distress. Affected areas include Kamashwaram, Virundhamavadi, Pudupalli, Vedrappu, Vanamadevi, Vallapallam, Kallimedu, Eeravayal, and Chemboadi.

Also read: Samantha Ruth Prabhu Mourns Loss Of Father Joseph Prabhu With Emotional Tribute

Authorities urge residents in low-lying and coastal areas to remain vigilant and adhere to safety advisories as Cyclone Fengal approaches, bringing heavy rainfall, strong winds, and potential flooding to the coastal regions of Tamil Nadu.

</excerpt>

As Cyclonic Storm ‘Fengal’ approaches Tamil Nadu, the state braces for widespread rainfall and potential flooding in coastal areas. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast heavy downpours over the next few days, prompting disaster preparedness measures.

IMD Updates on Cyclone Fengal

Chennai Regional Meteorological Centre Director, S. Balachandran, reported that the deep depression over the southwest Bay of Bengal has intensified, now located approximately 310 km southeast of Nagapattinam, 410 km southeast of Puducherry, and 480 km south-southeast of Chennai.

“It is expected to move north-northwestward and cross between Karaikal and Mahabalipuram by the morning of November 30,” he said.

Most parts of Tamil Nadu are predicted to experience moderate rainfall over the next 2–3 days. However, heavy to extremely heavy rainfall is anticipated in select districts. Over the next 24 hours, heavy rainfall is expected in Delta districts, Chengalpattu, and Viluppuram. On November 30, extremely heavy rainfall may occur in Viluppuram, Cuddalore, Puducherry, and Chengalpattu.

Fishermen have been strictly advised not to venture into the sea until November 31 due to rough conditions.

Navy Steps Up Disaster Response

The Indian Navy has activated a comprehensive disaster response mechanism to address the cyclone’s impact. The Eastern Naval Command, in collaboration with Tamil Nadu and Puducherry naval units, is coordinating with civil administrations to ensure rapid response.

Specialized Flood Relief Teams (FRTs) are being stationed in vulnerable regions, and vehicles loaded with essential relief supplies such as food, water, and medical kits are on standby. The focus remains on Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) and Search and Rescue (SAR) operations.

Also read: Bengaluru Concert to Support ‘Chennai Express’ Singer SP Balasubrahmanyam Through Kannada Hits

Public Safety Advisory

As Cyclone Fengal intensifies, authorities are urging residents in low-lying and coastal areas to remain vigilant. Strong winds, heavy rainfall, and potential flooding are expected. Residents have been advised to adhere to safety guidelines and evacuation protocols as necessary.

The situation continues to develop, with IMD and state authorities monitoring the cyclone’s progress closely.

The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) in Chennai predicts heavy to very heavy rainfall in districts like Mayiladuthurai, Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam, Chennai, Tiruvallur, Kanchipuram, Chengelpet, and Cuddalore. As a result, schools in Chennai, Chengelpet, Cuddalore, and Mayiladuthurai will remain closed, according to reports.

Other areas such as Nagapattinam, Mayiladuthurai, and Tiruvarur will also close schools and colleges due to the severe weather. This has been affecting the region since Tuesday. The weather department expects light to moderate rainfall across Tamil Nadu, with occasional heavy rain, continuing until Thursday, November 28.

The rising water levels over the past few days have prompted the government to warn people against visiting low-lying areas, particularly near these rivers.

A video shared by Rajya Sabha MP and Congress spokesperson Ranjeet Ranjan captures the chaos as dozens of terrified people are seen fleeing from a bridge when the Kosi river’s fast-moving water begins to touch its surface. “The river is in spate due to the rising water level of the Kosi dam. In this regard, my humble appeal to all the residents of Supaul, Saharsa, Madhepura, Madhubani, Darbhanga, Khagaria, Bhagalpur, Katihar, and Navgachiya is to stay away from the dam and strictly follow the high alert issued by the district administration,” he said, urging residents to prioritize safety.

In the footage, people—many of them women—are seen running and screaming as they hurriedly attempt to get off the bridge. Security personnel are also present, helping to evacuate women, men, and children from the dangerous situation. Despite the panic, some people are seen taking photos and videos as they rush to safety. As the camera captures the scene, the river can be seen raging and submerging the surrounding areas.

</excerpt>

A farmer in northern Thailand was compelled to cull over 100 crocodiles from his farm due to severe flooding, which raised concerns about their potential escape and the threat they could pose to humans. Natthapak Khumkad, the owner of the crocodile farm in Lamphun, reported that relentless rainfall had badly damaged the enclosures housing his Siamese crocodiles.

Facing the risk of escape, he made the difficult decision to kill 125 crocodiles, some reaching lengths of up to three meters. Khumkad expressed particular worry that the reptiles could wander into the flooded countryside and endanger local residents and livestock.

The incident, highlighted by CNN, occurred in Lamphun province after devastating monsoon rains swept through the area. In September, northern Thailand experienced intense monsoon rains that led to landslides and floods, resulting in over 20 fatalities.

“I had to make the most difficult decision of my life to kill them all. My family and I discussed if the wall collapsed the damage to people’s lives would be far bigger than we can control. It would involve people’s lives and public safety,” Khumkad told CNN.

In a Facebook update, Natthapak showcased the eroded walls of the crocodile pond and explained, “This was the primary reason that forced me to make an urgent decision. On that day, it rained heavily non-stop. The underwater wall collapsed, which was very close to reaching the outer wall.”

He noted that although his staff tried to block off the area to repair the pond as quickly as possible, the continuous rain made the situation perilous.

“It was a crisis that required an extremely urgent decision. I had to use the last resort, which was to remove the crocodiles from the farm by slaughtering them. If it wasn’t absolutely necessary, we wouldn’t have used this method. It was the best, fastest, and safest method in that situation, with the rain still pouring incessantly. Thank you for all the encouragement and understanding,” Natthapak added.

The Department of Flood Forecasting Division in Nepal has issued a flood alert across several regions, warning of rising river water levels due to continuous heavy rainfall. Residents are urged to take precautions as the situation is expected to worsen.

Areas Affected by the Flood Warning

In a press release, the Flood Forecasting Division identified the main affected areas as regions west of the Arun Basin (Sankhuwasabha District) extending to the Banganga Basin (Kapilvastu District). Rivers such as Arun, Dudhkoshi, Sunkoshi, Bagmati, Narayani, Tinau, and Banganga, along with their tributaries, are expected to experience rising water levels.

Roads and Homes Submerged

Continuous heavy rainfall has led to severe flooding, inundating roads and houses across Nepal. The department has stated that a significant flood risk remains for the next 24 hours, particularly in areas west of the Arun Basin up to the Banganga Basin. “Almost all monitored rivers in these regions have surpassed warning levels, with some nearing critical danger points,” the press release emphasized.

Rising Danger Levels in Key Rivers

The report added that Sunkoshi and Bagmati rivers have already exceeded danger levels and continue to rise. Meanwhile, rivers like Arun, Dudhkoshi, Narayani, Tinau, and Banganga have crossed warning thresholds and are escalating in severity.

Weather Forecast and Public Advisory

According to the Flood Forecasting Division, ongoing rainfall in the catchment areas of these rivers is contributing to the rising flood risks. Heavy rainfall is also predicted to continue over the next 24 hours, further aggravating the situation. “This persistent precipitation is expected to worsen the flooding,” the department warned.

Safety Measures and Emergency Contacts

The department urged the public to avoid unnecessary travel, remain in safe and elevated areas, and closely follow weather updates. “Be prepared to evacuate if you’re in low-lying areas,” the statement read. Those requiring assistance are advised to contact the Flood Forecasting Section via a toll-free number (1155), or reach out to local authorities and emergency services for immediate help.

The victims, identified as 48-year-old Punyashray Sharma, an HDFC Bank branch manager, and 26-year-old Viraj Dwivedi, a cashier at the same branch in Gurugram’s Sector 31, were returning to their home in Greater Faridabad from Gurugram.

Despite warnings about high water levels, the two entered the flooded old Faridabad Railway underpass, which had been inundated due to heavy rain. As their SUV began to submerge, the pair attempted to escape and swim to safety but tragically drowned. Sharma’s body was retrieved from the vehicle, while Dwivedi’s body was discovered after a prolonged search at around 4 a.m. on Saturday.

Police said passers-by had tried to assist the duo, managing to pull them from the vehicle, but unfortunately, Dwivedi died on the spot. Sharma was rushed to Badshah Khan Civil Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Inspector Samer Singh of NIT Faridabad police confirmed that the families of the victims had been notified and that the bodies would be handed over after post-mortem examinations.

Heavy rainfall in the Delhi-NCR region has led to severe waterlogging, with the IMD issuing a yellow alert and predicting further rain in isolated areas.

The state has been grappling with severe rainfall, leading to widespread flooding, property damage, and the loss of 45 lives in rain-related incidents. Although waterlogging has eased in some areas, the intense flooding continues to cause significant challenges.

Andhra Pradesh Home Minister Vangalapudi Anitha will assess the flood damage in Vijayawada, following Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu’s earlier statement that 1.4 lakh single-floor homes have been extensively damaged by the floods. The chief minister has requested central government assistance and informed Governor S Abdul Nazeer about the ongoing flood crisis.

Relief efforts are in full swing, with three lakh food packets, milk, and biscuits being distributed to affected residents. Additionally, five lakh kilograms of vegetables have been sold through 163 stores. Around 20,000 houses have been cleaned using fire engines, and 42 drones are being used for sanitation operations.

Neighboring Telangana has also been severely impacted by the floods. Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan announced that the central government will provide ₹3,448 crore in immediate assistance to both Andhra Pradesh and Telangana to mitigate the effects of the floods. The government will also assess crop damage and consider providing seeds, fertilizers, and potential loan waivers for farmers.

The Chief Minister also called for preventive measures to avoid post-rainfall epidemics, including clearing debris, soil, and sediment, and ensuring roads are cleared for traffic.

As of now, 523 roads remain closed in districts like Surat, Navsari, Valsad, Tapi, Dang, and Chhota Udepur due to flooding. On Thursday, seven members of two families in Ashwini Tripura Para were confirmed dead. Earlier, on Wednesday, three members of another family in Devipur lost their lives due to a landslide.

In response to the tragedy, the Tripura state government has expressed deep sorrow and extended condolences to the bereaved families. The government has announced a financial aid of Rs 4 lakh to each affected family. They have also called on the public to cooperate and assured that the administration is committed to providing full support and assistance to those affected by the calamities.

The severe weather has impacted around 30,000 people across the state. To manage the situation, the government has established 321 relief camps. The heavy rainfall, which has reached 375 mm in some southern districts and 350 mm in other areas, has led to the closure of schools, colleges, and universities.

Tripura has been experiencing unprecedented rainfall due to a sudden depression in the Bay of Bengal, which has significantly affected the southern regions and other parts of the state. Chief Minister Manik Saha, speaking to ANI on Wednesday, highlighted the severity of the situation. He noted that this level of rainfall, with 375 mm recorded in the southern districts, is unprecedented in Tripura. The intense rainfall has caused landslides and caused river levels to rise above danger levels.

The Chief Minister assured that relief efforts are underway, with a relief team already deployed and additional assistance being arranged from other states to address the crisis. The government is working to manage the situation and provide necessary aid to those affected by the disaster.

Eyewitnesses reported that the bridge was swept away early this morning. Authorities responded swiftly, with police arriving at the scene and restricting movement on the damaged structure.

Locals have pointed out that maintenance issues with the bridge have been a long-standing concern. They noted that a similar portion of the bridge was washed away during flash floods in 2014, leading to its reconstruction by the administration.

Resident Balvinder Singh highlighted the impact of the current damage, stating, “Lakhs of people are now suffering, struggling to reach Poonch due to this unexpected disaster.”

</excerpt>

A photograph capturing the aftermath of a heavy rainstorm in Delhi has recently gone viral, drawing attention not just for the impressive extent of the flooding but also for the striking scene of journalists maintaining their usual activities amidst the chaos.

The image, taken on Wednesday, shows the Press Club in Delhi submerged in ankle-deep water following torrential rains. The floodwaters have turned the club’s floor into a small lake, but it is the response of the club’s members that has captured widespread interest.

At the heart of the photograph is a table adorned with open bottles of alcohol and an assortment of snacks, typical fare for a social gathering. Despite the flooded surroundings, a group of men seated around the table appear completely at ease. Some are engrossed in their phones, others are exchanging greetings, and one man has even placed his legs up on a chair to keep them dry. The scene reflects a surprising normalcy amid the waterlogged environment.

In addition to the table’s occupants, the photograph shows other Press Club members wading through the room with their trousers rolled up, navigating the flood with a practical and composed attitude. Their willingness to carry on with their routine activities, despite the uncomfortable conditions, underscores a remarkable sense of resilience and adaptability.

The intense downpour led to poor visibility, resulting in a temporary suspension of flight services at 10:36 AM. Flights resumed just 19 minutes later, once visibility improved to 1000 meters and the Runway Visual Range (RVR) reached 1200 meters.

Air India responded swiftly by issuing an advisory on social media, cautioning passengers about potential delays for flights to and from Mumbai. The airline urged travelers to allow extra time for their journey to the airport due to anticipated slow traffic and waterlogging.

In addition to the airport disruptions, the Andheri subway has been closed to vehicular traffic because of severe waterlogging, exacerbating the city’s traffic congestion.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a nowcast warning at 10:00 AM, predicting intense rainfall across Mumbai and surrounding areas, including Thane, Raigad, and parts of Pune for the next few hours.

Railway services have also been affected, with the Panvel-Chouk line suspended since 09:42 AM due to flooding. As a result, Train No. 12126 has been rerouted via Kalyan. Central Railway officials reported that local trains are running at reduced speeds due to poor visibility and high winds.

Waterlogging has been reported in several areas, including the Bhandup pumping station, Vikhroli, and near King Circle. A tree uprooted near Matoshree Bungalow in Bandra East at around 6 AM led to the temporary diversion of BEST buses for approximately an hour.

The city’s infrastructure is currently strained as it grapples with the effects of the heavy rains.
