Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh hoisted the national flag at his official residence in Delhi as part of the Independence Day celebrations, ahead of the main event at the Red Fort in the national capital. Meanwhile, cabinet ministers and other dignitaries began arriving at the Red Fort, where Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to deliver his 11th consecutive address to the nation.

Among those present were Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, Union Minister Kiren Rijiju, National Security Advisor Ajit Doval, and Union Minister Mansukh Mandaviya. They joined other leaders, including Giriraj Singh, Manohar Lal Khattar, Shivraj Singh Chouhan, Chirag Paswan, and Bhupender Yadav, to participate in the 78th Independence Day celebrations.

The Indian Olympic contingent was also invited to attend the event at the Red Fort. The venue was decorated with flowers in the national flag’s colours, and preparations were in full swing for the day’s events.

Speaking on the occasion, Union Minister for Agriculture Shivraj Singh Chouhan extended his best wishes to citizens, emphasizing the sacrifices made by freedom fighters. He highlighted the importance of working towards the vision of a developed India by 2047, as outlined by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

From Srinagar and Ladakh to the national capital, the country is uniting to celebrate its freedom on August 15. The national flag is widely visible, being sold in shops and on the streets. The three colours—saffron, white, and green—are dominating the markets, symbolizing the nation’s unity.

Embracing the Tiranga is seen not only as a tribute to the past but also as a commitment to the values of justice, equality, and progress. It serves as a beacon of hope and pride, inspiring every Indian to strive for a brighter and more inclusive future.

This year’s Independence Day theme, ‘Viksit Bharat @ 2047,’ aims to propel the government’s efforts toward making India a developed nation by 2047. In line with the theme of increasing public participation, around 6,000 special guests from various backgrounds have been invited to witness the celebrations at the Red Fort. These guests include youth, tribal communities, farmers, women, and others who have excelled through various government initiatives.

Students benefiting from the Atal Innovation Mission and the PM SHRI scheme, as well as volunteers from Mera Yuva Bharat and the National Service Scheme under the ‘Meri Maati Mera Desh’ initiative, will be attending the event. The guest list also includes tribal artisans, Van Dhan Vikas members, and tribal entrepreneurs supported by the National Scheduled Tribes Finance and Development Corporation, along with beneficiaries of key agricultural schemes such as Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi and Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana.

ASHA workers, Auxiliary Nurse Midwives, Anganwadi workers, elected women representatives, and beneficiaries of women empowerment programs like the Sankalp Hub for Empowerment of Women, Lakhpati Didi, Drone Didi, and the Sakhi Kendra scheme will also be present. Additionally, workers from the Child Welfare Committee and District Child Protection Units, representatives from the Aspirational Blocks Programme, and workers from the Border Roads Organisation will attend.

The event will see nearly 2,000 people from various states and union territories dressed in traditional attire. Additionally, 3,000 winners of online competitions organized by the Ministry of Defence in collaboration with MyGov and Akashvani will be part of the celebrations.

A total of 2,000 cadets from the Army, Navy, and Air Force, representing different schools across the country, will participate in the ceremony. These cadets will be seated on Gyanpath, opposite the Red Fort rampart, forming the ‘My Bharat’ logo with customized tricolour kits. Additionally, 500 National Service Scheme (NSS) volunteers will also take part in the celebrations.

</excerpt>

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ‘Har Ghar Tiranga ‘initiative, launched in 2022 as part of the ‘Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav,’ has not only fostered national unity and patriotism but also catalysed the emergence of a new women-led industry across India. The campaign, which encourages citizens to display the national flag at their homes, workplaces, and institutions, has evolved into a significant movement with far-reaching socio-economic impacts.
Govind Mohan, Secretary of the Ministry of Culture, which oversees the Har Ghar Tiranga Abhiyan, highlighted the initiative’s transformative effect on employment and industry and said that this initiative by PM Modi had led to the creation of job employment opportunities for women in the country.

“While it evolved into a large people’s movement, it also created new employment opportunities for thousands of women across the country. This initiative gave birth to an entirely new industry driven by women at the grassroots level, reducing reliance on large vendors. Today, Self-Help Groups (SHGs) have become the primary producers of the national flags,” Mohan said.

Initially, meeting the overwhelming demand for flags posed a significant challenge, officials recalled. In the first year of the campaign, the central government procured and distributed approximately 7.5 crore flags to states, both directly and through post offices, to address the shortfall. To further support this endeavor, Prime Minister Modi spearheaded a revision of the Flag Code of India, which facilitated the involvement of various stakeholders in flag production, including women’s SHGs.

By the second year of the campaign, the dependency on central government-supplied flags dramatically reduced. “The demand for central government-supplied national flags significantly dropped to around 2.5 crore in the second year, as women’s SHGs increasingly took over flag production. A notable example is Uttar Pradesh, which purchased 4.5 crore flags from the government in 2022 but did not buy any in 2023, thanks to the self-sufficiency of its SHGs in flag production,” reveals Govind Mohan.

The Indian tricolour, a symbol of the nation’s rich history and diverse culture, has its roots in the freedom struggle. Designed by Pingali Venkayya in 1921, the flag evolved through various iterations before its final adoption in 1947. The saffron, white, and green stripes represent courage, purity, and faith respectively, while the Ashoka Chakra symbolizes the ‘Wheel of Law’ and continuous progress. The trend continued into 2024, with the demand for central government-supplied flags falling further to just 20 lakhs. SHGs have become the primary producers of flags, showcasing a remarkable shift from large vendors to grassroots enterprises. “Across India, approximately 25 crore flags are needed annually, one for every home. This shift from large vendors to SHGs has transformed these groups into a thriving industry,” Mohan notes.

The Har Ghar Tiranga campaign is now seen as a testament to how a national initiative can simultaneously promote civic engagement and create substantial economic opportunities. By empowering Self-Help Groups (SHGs), the campaign has ensured broad public participation and fostered significant economic benefits for women across the country. It serves as a powerful example of how strategic government campaigns can drive positive socio-economic change, benefiting communities and creating new industries in the process.

</excerpt>

Independence Day, or Swatantrata Diwas, is celebrated across India every year on August 15, marking the nation’s liberation from British rule in 1947. This day is a time for the country to reflect on its journey to freedom, honoring the sacrifices of countless freedom fighters and civilians who played a pivotal role in India’s independence.

A Historical Overview of Independence Day

India’s journey to independence was long and challenging. It began with the Battle of Plassey in 1757, where the British East India Company defeated the last Nawab of Bengal, establishing a foothold in India. The First War of Independence in 1857, also known as the Revolt of 1857, was a significant but ultimately unsuccessful attempt to overthrow British rule.

The Indian National Congress, founded in 1885, became a driving force in the push for self-rule. The movement gained momentum after World War I, leading to widespread protests and the Civil Disobedience Movement. By 1929, the Indian Parliament had declared the goal of ‘Purna Swaraj,’ or complete independence, and the struggle for freedom intensified.

The path to independence was marked by relentless efforts from leaders like Mahatma Gandhi, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, and Subhas Chandra Bose. Gandhi’s philosophy of non-violence and civil disobedience played a crucial role in weakening British control. Finally, on August 15, 1947, India gained its independence, though it came with the tragic partition of the country.

Significance of Independence Day

Independence Day symbolizes the unity and patriotism that fueled India’s fight for freedom. It serves as a reminder of the enduring efforts and sacrifices that led to the end of British rule and the emergence of a sovereign nation. This day is not just a celebration but a time to reflect on the values and ideals that continue to shape India.

Celebrations of Independence Day

Preparations for Independence Day begin well in advance, with government buildings adorned with lights and the Indian tricolour proudly displayed on homes and public spaces. Doordarshan, India’s public broadcaster, airs films and documentaries that depict the lives of freedom fighters, bringing the nation’s history to life.

On Independence Day, the prime minister raises the national flag and delivers a speech from the historic Red Fort in Delhi. This event is broadcast live across the nation, symbolizing the unity and strength of India. Schools, colleges, and organizations nationwide hold flag-hoisting ceremonies, cultural performances, and events that celebrate the country’s rich heritage.

As a national holiday, many Indians spend the day with family and friends, enjoying picnics, watching patriotic films, and reflecting on the nation’s journey to freedom.

Har Ghar Tiranga: Embracing National Pride

The “Har Ghar Tiranga” initiative, launched in 2022, has become a significant part of Independence Day celebrations. This campaign encourages every Indian household to display the national flag, fostering a sense of unity and patriotism. This year, the government has called on each household to proudly raise the tricolour on Independence Day, creating a powerful visual of national pride across the country.

The campaign aims to deepen the connection between citizens and the national emblem, making the tricolour a symbol of collective heritage and pride. By promoting the display of the flag in homes, the initiative highlights the importance of national identity, celebrating India’s independence and its ongoing journey toward progress.

As India marks its 77th Independence Day, the nation comes together to celebrate its rich history, enduring spirit, and the shared values that continue to guide its path forward.

On the Har Ghar Tiranga website, nearly 44 million people have posted selfies with the Indian flag, and the government has changed the caller tunes on phones to urge more people to follow suit.

Culture ministry official stated, “Our aim is to run it throughout the day to promote the Har Ghar Tiranga movement and encourage people to upload selfies with the flag.”

The website reports so as of 11:59am, 44963700million selfies have been submitted, and the number is increasing every second, the official stated.

Additionally, the website has been pinned with more than 50 million digital flags.

Amit Shah, the home minister, as well as the cricketers Sachin Tendulkar and Rohit Sharma and the actors Amitabh Bachchan, Rajnikanth, and Anupam Kher have also posted selfies.

The union government has contracted with roughly 200 manufacturers, including small and medium-sized businesses and self-help organisations, to produce the flags in order to have them displayed in 200 million homes between August 13 and August 15 in honour of 75 years of independence.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi officially commenced the government’s 75-week countdown to the 75th anniversary of Independence from Sabarmati Ashram on March 12, 2021.

These events, which are spread over 28 States, 8 UTs, and more than 150 countries, are centred on 5 major themes that guide our commemorative and festive endeavours. (Freedom struggle, Ideas@75, Resolve@75, Actions@75, Achievements@75).

The movement, a ministry of culture initiative to commemorate “Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav” celebrations for India’s 75th year of independence, will help “deepen our bond with the national flag,” PM Modi said in a tweet

Taking to Twitter he wrote, “This year, when we are marking Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav, let us strengthen the Har Ghar Tiranga Movement. Hoist the Tricolour or display it in your homes between 13th and 15th August. This movement will deepen our connect with the national flag,

Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Saturday unfurled the tricolor at his residence in Delhi. Shah also urged countrymen to hoist the flag at their homes from August 13 to 15. Under the aegis of Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav, the countrymen are being encouraged to hoist the tricolor at their homes.

Taking to Twitter Shah said, “Tiranga is our pride. It unites and inspires everyone Indian. On PM Narendra Modi Ji’s clarion call of Har Ghar Tiranga, today hoisted a Tiranga at my residence in New Delhi and paid tributes to our valorous heroes who sacrificed everything for the Motherland.”

“I appeal to all countrymen to hoist the Tiranga at your home from 13th-15th August and to be a part of this campaign of awakening the spirit of patriotism in every heart. Also, upload your picture with the Tiranga on http://harghartiranga.com and inspire others for the same,” Shah said.

“At the stroke of the midnight hour, when the world sleeps, India will awake to life and freedom,” said Pandit Nehru on 14 August, 1947.

The speech ‘Tryst with destiny’ by Jawaharlal Nehru marked the end of 200 years of British Shackles leading India to the dawn of Freedom.

Celebrating 75 year of Independence, the government proposed the movement “Har Ghar Tiranga” to instil us with the spir nationalism nalism and to build a nation ‘where the mind is led forward by thee into ever-widening thought and action.’

Digging into the history of our nation,Pingali Venkayya, the Indian Freedom Fighter, born on August 2, 1876, took the responsibility to outline the Indian National Flag.

It was on April 1, 1921, when Pingali presented the design of the tricolour to Mahatma Gandhi. The predicament lies in the fact that the artist died in abject poverty and remained forgotten in society.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on August 2 suggested the idea of changing the display image of the social media account to tricolour until August 15. The gesture of changing the display picture might appear futile to some, but it has great cognitive profoundity.

PM Modi proposed the idea on August 2 with the contemplative aim of commemorating the birth date of the forgotten artist Pingali Venkayya, the designer of the tricolour.

Displaying the Indigenous work of art( National flag) as our display picture carries out the idea of imbibing the spirit of Aatma Nirbhar Bharat. Not only does it symbolise our self-subsisting approach, but it also marks the token of unity.

A similar display picture of everyone in a country with a population of over 1.3 billion will emenate the objective of our being Indian beyond all the religions, casts, and creeds.

We have witnessed the marvels of unity during the period of freedom struggle against the East India Company for over 200 years, and now is the time to exhibit unity in order to exterminate the challenges hindering our growth.

The National Flag is a perfect representation of diversified Indian culture. Additionally, it represents India’s integrity, unwavering courage, and esteem around the world.

The Congress has been getting criticism for skipping the rally where Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu flagged off the rally in order to spread awareness about the “Har Ghar Tiranga’ Movement to mark the 75th year of Independence.

“Today was a significant event,” Union Minister Anurag Thakur said. “We tostarted off from the historical Red Fort and several Union ministers, MPs, and youth leaders came together and paid homage to the freedom fighters. “

In a tweet, Shehzad Poonawalla, a spokesman for the BJP, claimed that he could only observe politicians from the National Democratic Alliance participating in the demonstration. “Cong/TMC/AAP/SP missing, according to the media. In order to condemn the government will rhe opposition insult the tricolour?”

Earlier on Tuesday, PM Modi changed the profile picture of his social media accounts to the national flag, urging the nation to do the same.

The opposition has also mocked the government in one of the tweet. The Congress leader, Jairam Ramesh, tweeted, seemingly criticising the Centre’s choice to permit the production and sale of the tricolour made of polyester, “And that too in Khadi.”

To honour the tricolour ahead of India’s 75th Independence Day, the Congress and a number of party officials updated their profile pictures on Wednesday.
The BJP leaders followed the exhortation of the PM immediately. The Congress leaders too joined the movement the next day, with a twist, displaying the picture of the first Prime Minister of India, Jawahar Lal Nehru, holding the tricolour.

The official handle of Congress posted on the micro-blogging site captioned, “The tricolour is in our hearts, it is in our veins as blood. On December 31, 1929, Pandit Nehru, while hoisting the tricolour on the banks of the river Ravi, said, “Now the tricolour has been hoisted, it should not be bowed.”
