</excerpt>

Gaza’s humanitarian assistance was abruptly disrupted as the US-supported Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF) halted food distribution for one day, blaming threats from Hamas. The militant group denied issuing any threats and vowed to ensure UN aid convoys in the enclave are safe.

This incident highlights the still-present difficulties in providing humanitarian assistance in Gaza in the face of growing Israel-Hamas tensions and a potential humanitarian crisis.

Aid Suspension and Conflicting Claims

The Gaza Humanitarian Foundation, which uses private US security and logistics companies, said it was unable to deliver food aid on Saturday because of unnamed threats that rendered operations impossible. The GHF stated it will resume operations at two sites on Sunday, indicating a move to adjust operations. A Hamas official, however, said Reuters he knew nothing about any threats, describing the claims as unfounded.

In the meantime, the Gaza government controlled by Hamas condemned GHF’s operation as a failure and extended support to the long-established UN-sponsored aid operations. Hamas called for the protection of humanitarian convoys by all Palestinians, stressing its determination to ensure security in aid delivery.

Hamas Promises Protection & Tighter Security Measures

To secure aid supplies and avert looting and armed raiding, Hamas’s militant arm intends to station snipers along UN aid routes beginning Sunday. This action seeks to protect aid deliveries, particularly following charges by Israel and the US that Hamas has diverted aid from UN operations—accusations the militants have strongly denied.

Difficulty in Delivering Aid and Blockade Effect

Israel permitted restricted UN-organized aid to resume following an 11-week blockade, but the UN deems the aid a “drop in the ocean” amidst a deep humanitarian crisis. The GHF began operations on May 26 and has already delivered nearly 9 million meals. However, critics accuse the group of creating disorganized access and triggering deadly violence near its distribution points, where dozens of Palestinians have died recently.

On Wednesday, GHF suspended aid to push Israel to provide more civilian security, and on Friday, suspended again because of over-crowding. The Israeli defense forces reported delivering 350 trucks of aid across the Kerem Shalom crossing this week, but the UN laments frequent denial of passage and looting incidents.

Fuel Crisis and Escalating Conflict

Hospitals in Gaza are experiencing dire fuel shortages, with just three days of fuel left. Israeli authorities withhold access to hospital fuel depots, deepening the medical crisis. Israeli airstrikes have killed 55 individuals on Saturday, further intensifying the conflict.

The Israeli forces uncovered an underground Hamas tunnel and command center under the European Hospital in Gaza, showing continued security fears.

Human Toll and Continuing Hostilities

The conflict started after the Oct. 7, 2023, Hamas attack killed more than 1,200 people and kidnapped 251 hostages. Israeli military operations have since killed over 54,000 Palestinians, the majority of whom were civilians. Recently, Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz said a Thai worker’s body had been retrieved from militant captors, highlighting the human cost.

This Gaza humanitarian crisis illustrates the intricate mixture of security challenges, political tensions, and pressing needs. The halt in aid and protection need illustrate a delicate condition requiring concerted action from everyone to ensure that aid is delivered to those who are in dire need.

</excerpt>

The US intends to present a new proposal to Israel and Hamas to bring a ceasefire to Gaza and free hostages. US Special Envoy to the Middle East Steve Witkoff made the new push in a mixed response from the two sides. This comes after Hamas stated that it had reached a “general framework” agreement with Witkoff, which Israel promptly denied.

US special envoy to Middle East Steve Witkoff remained hopeful of a deal being negotiated in the near future.

Steve Witkoff Hopesful About Peace Agreement

On Wednesday, he said that he will soon send a fresh term sheet for the US president’s approval. He communicated “very good feelings” regarding the attainment of a temporary ceasefire and the development of a long-term peaceful solution. The envoy’s initiative follows the continuation of violence since Israel resumed hostilities in March.

Israel announced that it will dominate most of Gaza, in accordance with US President Donald Trump’s contentious plan that includes the deportation of Palestinians and US domination of the land.

Controversy Over Hostage Priorities

Critics say Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu prioritizes annexing Gaza over securing the return of hostages. Out of the 58 hostages kidnapped in Gaza, people believe only 20 remain alive. This makes the US effort more urgent, which is trying to harmonize ceasefire conditions with negotiations for the release of hostages.

Proposal Based on Direct Talks With Both Sides

According to The Jerusalem Post, the US proposal reflects Steve Witkoff’s negotiations with Israeli Strategic Affairs Minister Ron Dermer and Palestinian-American activist Bishara Bahbah, who has been negotiating with Hamas leaders in Qatar. Notably, Bahbah forms a key part of the Trump administration’s ongoing efforts to mediate between the two sides.

Even as Witkoff appears confident, some officials have doubts. They argue Hamas’s announcement of the “Witkoff framework” is a public relations exercise and deny it has a negotiated agreement with the US.

The crucial sticking point continues to be what happens if a temporary truce runs out without a full agreement. It seeks US assurances that negotiations would continue, while Israel says it would restart fighting.

Hamas Hints at Ceasefire Terms

A statement has been released outlining the potential deal’s core terms: a permanent ceasefire, full Israeli withdrawal from Gaza, and unrestricted humanitarian aid. Hamas also said it would release 10 living hostages and bodies of others in exchange for Palestinian prisoners held by Israel.

Additionally, the agreement would include setting up a professional committee to manage Gaza’s affairs once the ceasefire is in place.

Cautious Optimism Amid Ongoing Tensions

People familiar with the negotiations informed The Jerusalem Post that an agreement now appears likely. They admit that gaps exist but characterize them as bridgeable. This has produced guarded optimism for a successful outcome.

In the world’s eyes, the next few days will be decisive in determining if the US initiative can deliver peace to a protracted conflict that has endured far too long.

</excerpt>

The leaders of France, Britain, and Canada have come under heavy fire from Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu for allegedly “emboldening” Hamas. His comments followed the three nations’ threats of “concrete action” if Israel did not stop its relaunched offensive in Gaza and relax restrictions on humanitarian aid.

PM Netanyahu warned that their position jeopardizes Israel’s security, encourages terrorism, and fortifies Hamas. In the face of growing international censure of the war in Gaza, his remarks have further widened the divide between Israel and important Western allies.

Western Leaders Under Fire

PM Netanyahu accused Canadian PM Mark Carney, French President Emmanuel Macron, and British PM Keir Starmer of supporting Hamas. He asserted that their stance inspires the militant group to keep fighting and gives it hope.

PM Netanyahu said, “You are on the wrong side of history and humanity.” Similar statements were made earlier by Foreign Minister Gideon Saar, who demonstrated a united Israeli front in the face of mounting international pressure.

Gaza Images Fuel Global Protests

Global protests have gotten more intense as images of the devastation and starvation in Gaza spread around the world. The Israeli government has struggled to change the world’s perception.

Yaki Dayan, a former Israeli diplomat, observed that many foreigners perceive the war as disproportionate, whereas Israel sees it as defensive. According to him, closing this perception gap “is sometimes an impossible mission.”

Fears Over Palestinian Statehood Recognition

The growing calls in Europe for the recognition of a Palestinian state continue to worry Israel. France might soon recognize, like Spain and Ireland did. PM Netanyahu presented this as risky, claiming that it would “reward murderers.”

He brought up the murder of two Israeli embassy employees in Washington by a man who allegedly yelled “Free Palestine.” He emphasized that Hamas’s objective is still to destroy Israel and connected the attack to chants from the October 7 attack.

Misleading Hamas Gratitude Claims

According to Netanyahu, Hamas expressed gratitude to the three Western leaders for their support. He said they were calling for sanctions against Israel rather than Hamas. He declared, “They want Hamas to stay in power.”

In actuality, the leaders demanded that Israel stop its most recent military offensive and restore aid to Gaza.

Western Replies Reaffirm Support

Jean-Noel Barrot, the French foreign minister, denied PM Netanyahu’s accusations. He denounced antisemitism and reiterated France’s backing for Israel. Israel’s right to self-defense was also upheld by British Armed Forces Minister Luke Pollard. He did stress, though, that it must adhere to international humanitarian law and guarantee that aid reaches Gaza.

Growing dissatisfaction with the protracted conflict is reflected in Israel’s increasing isolation on the international scene. In the face of international calls for restraint and peace, Netanyahu’s remarks represent a daring increase in rhetoric.

Hamas Offers To Release Hostages, Israel Plans Long-Term Stay in Gaza

<excerpt>Hamas offers to release hostages, but Israel’s long-term military presence in Gaza continues to shape the conflict’s future.
</excerpt>

The war between Israel and Hamas continues to develop with Hamas providing a possible breakthrough by saying that it would release all the remaining Israeli hostages. This would be in return for Palestinian detainees and a ceasefire of the continuing war in Gaza.

Although this action appears to mark the end of hostilities, major impediments remain. Hamas has refused Israel’s call to disarm and rejected an offer for a temporary ceasefire agreement. Meanwhile, Israel is not leaving Gaza anytime soon, raising the stakes for both parties.

Hamas Offers to Release Hostages

The latest in the conflict between Israel and Hamas has offered some optimism that a ceasefire will be possible. Hamas has said it would release all Israeli hostages in return for Palestinian prisoners. The offer is not unconditional, however. The Palestinian organization has categorically denied any demand that it disarm. Hamas insists that such demands are politically motivated and part of Israel’s overall agenda.

Even with this gesture, Israel has insisted it will not be part of ceasefire negotiations as long as Hamas is in control of Gaza. The terms of peace are extremely contentious, with each side presenting radically different proposals.

Israel Reopens Military Campaign, Denies Humanitarian Supplies

Israel has been little willing to concede. With the lapse of a temporary ceasefire, Israel resumed air and land attacks throughout Gaza. Earlier this year, Israel launched a stepped-up attack, targeting hospitals and other locations, taking heavy civilian casualties. Furthermore, Israel finished building a new security corridor around Rafah, the symbol of its long-term involvement in Gaza. Israel has indicated that it intends to keep its military presence in Gaza, with no end date signaled.

One major step taken by Israel has been blocking humanitarian supplies from Gaza. Defense Minister Israel Katz clarified that this action forms part of the strategy by Israel to pressure Hamas. Preventing aid from arriving for civilians aims to weaken the grip Hamas has on the populace. The blockade has aggravated the humanitarian situation in Gaza, where many of the residents are now living in misery.

Hamas Rejects Disarmament

One of the main points of contention in any future peace deal is Israel’s insistence that Hamas disarm as soon as the war is over. Hamas has categorically refused this requirement. Hamas’s lead negotiator, Khalil al-Hayya, says the disarmament requirement is a pretext for Israel’s wider political agenda.

Disarming, Hamas believes, amounts to relinquishing its right to resist occupation and is part of a plan to undermine Palestinian resistance movements.

Israel’s Long-Term Plans for Occupation in Gaza

The Israeli military, according to Israel’s Defense Minister Israel Katz, is not preparing to retreat from cleared locations in Gaza. Instead, Israel is planning on retaining security zones, which will act as barriers between Israeli cities and Hamas areas.

Katz’s statements indicate that Israel is heading for a long-term military engagement in Gaza, akin to that in Lebanon and Syria. This means that the Israeli army will continue to be dug in within Gaza forever, making it hard to achieve a lasting peace deal.

Endless War or Path to Peace?

The conflict between Israel and Hamas still presents major challenges to both parties. Hamas’s readiness to free hostages can be a silver lining, but the refusal to disarm and Israel’s continued military activities mean that peace is far from being achieved.

Israel’s participation in Gaza appears likely to continue, and the region appears set to be trapped in an endless cycle of war and bargaining. The global community will need to watch developments closely, since the crisis in Gaza is still one of the world’s most acute humanitarian emergencies.

In a significant development during the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict, Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar was killed in a firefight in the southern Gaza city of Rafah. Israel released footage showing Sinwar moving his belongings to a tunnel in Gaza just hours before the October 7 attack in 2023, which had ignited the current war. The footage, shared by Israeli army spokesman Rear Admiral Daniel Hagari, showed Sinwar and his family relocating items, such as a television, water, pillows, and mattresses, into a tunnel beneath their home in Khan Younis.

Details of the Tunnel and Final Moments

During a press briefing, Hagari revealed photos of the underground compound, which included facilities like toilets, showers, and a kitchen. Food, cash, and documents were also discovered in the tunnel. Despite Hamas claiming that Sinwar died “heroically” in battle, Israel provided drone footage showing Sinwar critically wounded in his last moments. In the footage, he is seen throwing an object at a drone before being fatally shot in the head. Israeli officials also found DNA evidence in the compound, identifying Sinwar after he used a tissue.

Death of Yahya Sinwar marks a crucial moment in the conflict. Having replaced his slain predecessor Ismail Haniyeh only months earlier, his demise raises questions about the future leadership of Hamas amid the war. With ongoing tensions drawing in Lebanon, where Hezbollah attacks have also intensified, the conflict has continued to escalate, causing widespread casualties and displacement on both sides.

Missile Attack on Israel by Iran Sparks Global Concern

A video, reportedly showing multiple missiles launched at Israel on the evening of October 1, has surfaced on social media. This footage, released by an Iranian news agency, has left many alarmed by the intensity of the attack.

The Daily Mail shared the footage with the following statement: “An Iranian news agency released footage of what they are claiming as missiles launched towards Israel last night. Israel said more than 180 missiles were launched at them from Iran with military air defences intercepting as many as possible.” The video begins with a text insert reading, “Iranian media shows off missile launches at Israel,” and depicts missiles firing from the ground and quickly taking over the skies.

Details of the Attack:

This marks the second Iranian strike on Israel this year, following a previous attack in April. Nearly 200 ballistic missiles were launched, with Israeli defence systems intercepting most of them, although a few reportedly hit central and southern regions of Israel.

Reason Behind the Attack:

The Islamic Revolution Guard Corps (IRGC) claimed the attack as a defensive response to the “violation of Iran’s sovereignty and the martyrdom” of their people. The IRGC further emphasized that this strike was in line with their right to protect their nation. According to a BBC report, the attack was ordered by Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

Israel’s Reaction:

Israel’s Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, firmly condemned the attack, stating, “Iran made a big mistake tonight and it will pay for it.” He emphasized Israel’s commitment to self-defence and retaliation, underscoring the regime’s failure to understand Israel’s determination. In a cabinet meeting, Netanyahu added that the missile attack was largely “thwarted” by Israel’s air defence systems.

Defence Minister Yoav Gallant reinforced this stance, declaring that “Iran has not learned a simple lesson – those who attack the state of Israel pay a heavy price.” He vowed that vengeance would follow for the aggression displayed by Iran.

</excerpt>

The United States is reportedly advising Israel to proceed with caution following Iran’s recent launch of approximately 200 ballistic missiles on Tuesday night. In discussions following the missile attack, US President Joe Biden and G7 leaders emphasized the need for a “proportionate” response. Biden stated, “All seven of us agree that they have a right to respond, but they should respond in proportion.”

US Concerns Over Regional Escalation

Washington has warned Israel against striking Iran’s nuclear facilities, expressing concerns that such actions could escalate tensions and destabilize the region further. US Secretary of State Antony Blinken has conveyed this stance to his counterparts from France, Britain, Germany, and Italy. The US remains deeply worried about the potential for heightened conflict in the Middle East.

Diverging Opinions on Strategy

While former Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett has called for a decisive strike on Iran’s nuclear sites, aiming to “fatally cripple this terrorist regime,” the US prefers to avoid triggering a full-scale regional war. State Department spokesman Matthew Miller affirmed Israel’s right to respond but cautioned against any actions that could lead to widespread conflict, stating, “We don’t want to see any action that would lead to a full-blown regional war.”

Recent Israeli Airstrike and Hezbollah Conflict

In a separate incident, Israel carried out a deadly airstrike on a Hezbollah rescue facility in central Beirut last Thursday, resulting in at least six deaths, according to AFP reports citing Lebanese sources. Additionally, the ongoing Hezbollah-Israel conflict has led to the deaths of eight Israeli soldiers.

Hezbollah has claimed responsibility for forcing Israeli soldiers to retreat, attacking an Israeli unit with explosives, and destroying three Merkava tanks using rockets as they approached the village of Maroun al-Ras.

Communication Between US and Israel

While President Biden mentioned ongoing discussions with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s team, there has been no direct communication between the two leaders on this specific issue. The White House has yet to initiate any direct talks with Netanyahu regarding the situation.

</excerpt>

The Israeli military has instructed its troops to brace for a potential ground invasion of Lebanon, following the militant group Hezbollah’s largest strike on Israel in retaliation for airstrikes on Lebanon that reportedly killed over 550 people. This marks a significant escalation in the conflict that has persisted for weeks, according to reports by AP News.

Hezbollah’s Deepest Attack

In a dramatic turn on Wednesday, Hezbollah fired dozens of projectiles, including a missile aimed at Israel’s capital, Tel Aviv. This attack represents the group’s deepest strike since the Gaza war began on October 7 last year. The assault came in response to Israel’s intensive airstrikes, which allegedly targeted Hezbollah’s weapon depots in southern and eastern Lebanon.

Ongoing Conflict Along the Border

The conflict has led to regular skirmishes and rocket attacks along Israel’s northern border with Lebanon. Hezbollah claims these actions are in solidarity with Palestinians facing harsh Israeli military strikes in Gaza. Tensions continue to mount as both sides exchange fire almost daily.

Key Developments in the Escalation

Israeli Army Prepares for Possible Invasion

Israeli Chief of Staff, Lt. Gen. Herzi Halevi, urged soldiers stationed in the north to prepare for potential ground operations in Lebanon. “Hezbollah expanded its range of fire, and later today, they will receive a very strong response. Prepare yourselves,” Halevi warned, emphasizing that the ongoing airstrikes are designed to set the stage for a ground invasion if necessary.

Shifting U.S. and Israeli Stance

While Israel and the U.S. had previously stated there were no immediate plans for a ground invasion of Lebanon, recent developments suggest a shift. These latest remarks represent the most explicit signal of a possible escalation.

Diplomatic Efforts for a Ceasefire

The U.S. has been working with international partners at the UN Security Council to push for a temporary ceasefire to ease tensions and allow displaced residents in Israel and Lebanon to return to their homes.

Blinken Warns of Disaster

U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken called for restraint, warning that an all-out war between Israel and Hezbollah would be “disastrous” for the entire region and its people.

France Supports Ceasefire Proposal

French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot stated that France is working alongside the U.S. on a 21-day ceasefire proposal to pave the way for peace talks between Israel and Hezbollah. Barrot is expected to travel to Beirut later this week to promote the plan.

Call for Protection of Civilians

Barrot emphasized the importance of both parties accepting the ceasefire proposal quickly to protect civilian lives and allow diplomatic negotiations to begin.

Israel Open to Diplomacy

Israel’s UN ambassador, Danny Danon, expressed openness to diplomatic efforts aimed at preventing further escalation. “We are grateful for all of those who are making a sincere effort with diplomacy to avoid a full war,” Danon said.

Lebanon’s Prime Minister Appeals to the UN

Lebanon’s Prime Minister Najib Mikati urged the UN Security Council to act swiftly, calling for the withdrawal of Israeli forces from Lebanese territories and an end to Israel’s daily violations.

President Biden’s Warning

U.S. President Joe Biden cautioned about the risk of an “all-out” war, saying that a ceasefire in Lebanon could potentially help address broader conflicts in the West Bank and Gaza as well.

UN’s Plea for Immediate Ceasefire

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres called for an immediate halt to hostilities, stating that “hell is breaking loose.” The UN reports that over 90,000 Lebanese people have been displaced in just five days of Israeli airstrikes, with more than 200,000 displaced since the conflict began on October 7.

The escalating conflict between Israel and Hezbollah is causing widespread displacement and destruction, with international leaders pushing for urgent ceasefire measures to prevent further devastation.

Recent Attacks and Retaliations

On Saturday, Hezbollah launched dozens of rockets on Moshav Beit Hillel in Israel, injuring civilians, as reported by The Times of Israel. This was a retaliatory attack for Israel’s strikes on Kfar Kela and Deir Siriane in Lebanon. Fuad Shukr, a top Hezbollah commander, was killed in Beirut in an Israeli airstrike on July 30, with Israel accusing him of orchestrating a rocket attack on the Golan Heights that killed 12 people. On July 31, Ismail Haniyeh, head of Hamas’ political bureau, was killed in Tehran during an Israeli operation. Additionally, Mohammed Deif, the Hamas commander behind the October 7 attacks, was reportedly killed in an Israeli strike in Gaza on July 13.

How Dangerous Is the Situation?

Cross-border firing has become routine between the Israel Defence Forces (IDF) and Hezbollah along the Israel-Lebanon border since the October 7 attacks. Over 400 people have been killed in Lebanon and 30 in Israel, with an estimated 150,000 displaced on both sides. Although Hezbollah and Israel have been in a low-level conflict since Hezbollah’s formation in 1982, recent events have exacerbated the situation. Residents in northern Israel and southern Lebanon live in fear of attacks, with many civilians forced to leave their homes. Hezbollah’s sophisticated arsenal, supplied by Iran and Russia, includes over a million rockets, anti-tank weapons, suicide drones, and various missiles. Israel, with one of the world’s best-equipped armies, has warned that any all-out war would see more intense military actions than in 2006.

Israel Vs Hezbollah’s Weaponry System

Israel boasts a formidable arsenal, including US made F35 fighter jets, advanced air defenses, and a well-developed domestic arms industry. Since the October 7 attack, Washington has provided at least $12.5 billion in military aid. Israel is also the only Middle Eastern country with nuclear power, which it does not officially acknowledge. Conversely, Hezbollah is a powerful force with 20,000 to 40,000 fighters and an estimated 120,000 to 200,000 projectiles. The group has increasingly sophisticated weaponry, including precision-guided missiles and armed drones, and claims to have 100,000 fighters.

What Will Iran Do?

Iran’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, has stated that Israel “must be punished” for actions he equates to an attack on Iranian soil. Iran could launch missile or drone strikes against Israeli military sites, significantly raising the stakes and drawing regional and international responses. Alternatively, Iran might escalate its indirect conflict against Israel by mobilizing its network of allied militant groups, including Hezbollah, militias in Syria, and the Houthi rebels in Yemen.

International Pressure and Responses

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has labeled Iran an existential threat to Israel, a view supported by successive US administrations. However, this support is waning due to growing global dismay at Israel’s operations in Gaza. While Israeli officials assert, they can operate independently, international bodies are increasingly critical of the Gaza conflict. The International Court of Justice (ICJ) in July called for Israel to cease settlement activity in the occupied West Bank and East Jerusalem and end its “illegal” occupation of these areas and the Gaza Strip. The ICJ’s findings will be presented to the UN General Assembly, which will decide on possible resolutions.

</excerpt>

In a tragic incident during the morning rush hour on Sunday, a Palestinian attacker stabbed and killed a woman and wounded three others in the city of Holon, just outside Tel Aviv. The attacker was later shot and “neutralized” by police, according to Israeli authorities.

The attack occurred near a gas station and a park, with the initial report of the stabbings coming from Israel’s ambulance service. A 66-year-old woman was fatally wounded, while two other senior citizens sustained serious injuries and were rushed to a hospital. A younger man also suffered injuries in the attack.

“Large police forces are present at the scene and are conducting extensive searches with a helicopter and additional resources,” the police said in a statement. The police confirmed that the attacker, identified as a resident of the West Bank, had been neutralized. They are continuing to search for other potential suspects in the area.

The incident has added to the rising tensions in the region, which have been particularly high since the Hamas attack on October 7 last year, igniting the war in Gaza. The situation has been further exacerbated by the recent killings of a senior Hezbollah commander in Lebanon and Hamas’ top political leader in Iran.

Initially, police reported that four people had been wounded in the attack. Israel’s Magen David Adom rescue service later confirmed that the 66-year-old woman had died. The service also provided an update on the conditions of the injured: a 70-year-old man remains in critical condition, a 68-year-old man is in severe condition, and a 26-year-old man is in moderate condition.

The stabbing in Holon underscores the ongoing and volatile nature of the conflict in the region, with both Israeli and Palestinian lives being tragically affected.

</excerpt>

In a series of escalating attacks, Israel launched airstrikes on a convoy of trucks entering Lebanon from Syria late Friday, a source close to the Lebanese militant group Hezbollah reported. The strikes, which occurred in the Hawsh el-Sayyed Ali area, injured one Syrian driver.

The source revealed that “three Israeli strikes targeted a convoy of tanker trucks on the Syrian-Lebanese border,” marking the latest in a sequence of Israeli actions in the region.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a Britain-based war monitor, also reported the strikes. According to their sources, the attacks targeted an area near a border crossing frequently used by Hezbollah for moving trucks and personnel between Lebanon and Syria. Specific targets included a truck convoy and a farm on the outskirts of Qusayr in Homs province.

Hezbollah, which has a significant presence on both sides of the eastern Lebanese-Syrian border, supports the regime of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. The group has been engaged in almost daily exchanges of fire with Israeli forces since Hamas, a Palestinian ally, launched an attack on Israel on October 7, igniting the ongoing conflict in Gaza.

Despite a temporary reduction in their assaults following the deaths of their military chief Fuad Shukr in Beirut and Hamas political chief Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran earlier in the week, Hezbollah claimed responsibility for five attacks on Israeli military positions near the border on Friday.

Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah, addressing Shukr’s funeral, warned of inevitable retaliation, stating that Israel and its supporters must “await our inevitable response” to the assassinations.

The conflict between Israel and Hezbollah since October has resulted in significant casualties. On the Lebanese side, at least 542 people, mostly fighters but also including 114 civilians, have died, according to an AFP tally. The Israeli side has reported 22 soldiers and 25 civilian deaths, including in the annexed Golan Heights.

As tensions remain high, the region braces for further escalations amid ongoing hostilities.

</excerpt>

US is significantly boosting its military presence in the Middle East in response to heightened regional tensions between Iran and Israel, following the assassination of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin has ordered the deployment of the USS Abraham Lincoln carrier strike group to replace the USS Theodore Roosevelt strike group, currently operating in the Gulf of Oman.

In addition to the carrier strike group, the Pentagon is sending a fighter squadron and additional warships, including destroyers and cruisers capable of ballistic missile defense, to the region helping Israel from any possible attacks by Iran and its proxies. The precise details of the warships involved have not been disclosed, though two US destroyers in the eastern Mediterranean participated in intercepting Iranian strikes against Israel in April.

The USS Wasp amphibious assault ship, already stationed in the region, is equipped with the 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit and can facilitate the evacuation of US citizens from Lebanon if necessary. The US military’s commitment to defend Israel has been emphasized as “ironclad,” with missile defense forces on heightened alert.

Iran has vowed retaliation for the killing of Haniyeh, which occurred on July 31 in Tehran. Iran and its proxy in Gaza have blamed Israel for the assassination, although Israel has not confirmed involvement. The assassination followed the Israeli claim of having killed Fuad Shukr, a top military commander of Hezbollah in Lebanon.

The Pentagon stated that the new deployments aim to “improve US force protection, increase support for the defense of Israel, and ensure preparedness for various contingencies.” This move comes amid ongoing tensions in the region, exacerbated by recent conflicts and threats.

Despite the increased military presence, Pentagon spokesperson Sabrina Singh indicated that the US does not view escalation as inevitable, advocating for a ceasefire as a potential resolution. An Israeli delegation is scheduled to travel to Cairo for negotiations aimed at achieving a ceasefire and a hostage release deal.

The ongoing conflict began with a Hamas attack on Israel on October 7, which resulted in 1,200 deaths. Israel’s subsequent military operations in Gaza have claimed nearly 40,000 lives, according to Hamas-run health reports.

</excerpt>

Delhi Police have reviewed and bolstered security at the Israeli Embassy and Chabad House following intelligence alerts triggered by the assassination of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran. On July 31, Haniyeh and his bodyguard were killed in an airstrike at a residence he used in the Iranian capital.

Sources indicate that senior officers held a meeting to develop an extensive security plan for the two Israeli buildings in Delhi. A senior officer stated that a multi-layered security system is already in place, with numerous CCTV cameras installed around both sites. Additional personnel may be deployed if necessary.

On Thursday, the Delhi Police issued a clarification after a false alert about explosions was posted on social media platform X (formerly Twitter). The police confirmed it was a hoax, and the post was subsequently deleted.

In the past three years, two low-intensity blasts have occurred near the Israeli Embassy in Delhi, neither causing injuries. Security around the embassy was increased following the outbreak of conflict between Israel and Hamas last year.

The recent assassination of Ismail Haniyeh, who was considered the overall leader of Hamas, has heightened tensions in the Middle East. Iran has vowed retaliation against Israel, holding it responsible for the killing. Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei declared it Tehran’s “duty to take revenge” against the “criminal, terrorist Zionist regime,” which he accused of martyring a “dear guest” on Iranian territory.

</excerpt>

On Saturday, August 3, an Israeli airstrike targeted a vehicle in the occupied West Bank, resulting in the death of a commander from Hamas’ Tulkarm Brigade, according to Hamas media reports. The strike, which occurred around 6:40 am local time, also killed four other individuals, though their identities have not been confirmed, as reported by the Palestinian news agency WAFA.

The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) confirmed the airstrike via their Telegram channel, stating that an IDF aircraft struck a vehicle containing members of a terrorist cell operating in Tulkarm. The military indicated that further details would be provided later.

Hamas media identified one of the deceased as Sheikh Haitham Balidi, a leader of Tulkarm’s Izzadin al-Qassam Brigades. The Tulkarm Brigade includes forces from various Palestinian factions.

This incident is part of a broader escalation of violence in the West Bank, which has intensified in recent months. The surge in violence follows the recent assassination of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran and an Israeli strike in Beirut that killed Hezbollah senior military commander Fuad Shukr. Both Hamas and Iran have accused Israel of orchestrating these attacks and have vowed retaliation, although Israel has not confirmed its involvement.

</excerpt>

US President Joe Biden has urged Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to agree to a cease-fire with Hamas, as frustrations mount within the White House over the ongoing conflict in Gaza. The two leaders, whose relationship has been strained by the nearly 10-month-old war, spoke on Thursday. Biden expressed his support for Israel against threats from Iran and allied militias such as Hezbollah, while also emphasizing the urgency of a cease-fire.

Assassination Complicates Peace Efforts

Biden’s call for a cease-fire follows the recent assassination in Iran of Ismail Haniyeh, the political leader of Hamas. Iran and Hamas blamed Israel for the killing, though Israel has not confirmed or denied responsibility. Biden noted that Haniyeh’s assassination had “not helped” the situation. This event has further complicated the already tense regional dynamics, with Iran and Hezbollah vowing revenge.

Strained US-Israel Relations

Despite the Biden administration providing billions in military aid to Israel, the US President has struggled to influence Netanyahu’s war strategy. Netanyahu, leading Israel’s most nationalist government, insists on continuing the military campaign until Hamas is destroyed. The ongoing war has caused significant political divisions in the US, adding pressure on Biden to seek an end to the conflict.

Truce Negotiations Stalled

Negotiations for a truce, mediated by Qatar, the US, and Egypt, have been ongoing for months with little progress. Biden outlined a plan in May proposing an initial six-week cease-fire, hostage exchanges, and a potential end to the war. However, Israel’s reluctance to agree to any truce that might limit its ability to resume operations against Hamas remains a major obstacle.

Regional Tensions and Global Impact

The recent killings of Haniyeh and a senior Hezbollah commander in Beirut by Israel have escalated regional tensions. Iran and Hezbollah’s threats of retaliation, coupled with the rising tensions in the petroleum-rich region, have impacted global markets. Oil prices have surged, and the Israeli shekel is experiencing its worst week in over four years. Netanyahu has stated that Israel is prepared for any scenario and will respond aggressively to any acts of aggression.

Biden’s Final Push for Peace

In his final months in office, Biden is determined to end the war. He stressed the importance of de-escalating broader regional tensions and promised new US military deployments to support Israel. The US government has also sent warnings to Iran, Hezbollah, and the Houthis of Yemen to avoid further escalation. The war in Gaza, triggered by a Hamas attack on southern Israel in October, has resulted in significant casualties on both sides, with approximately 40,000 Palestinians killed according to Hamas-run health ministry reports.

Biden’s efforts to mediate a cease-fire reflect the complexities and challenges of achieving peace in a region marked by deep-rooted conflicts and political divisions. As the situation continues to evolve, the international community watches closely, hoping for a resolution that can bring lasting peace to the troubled region.

</excerpt>

Israel’s military has confirmed the death of Hamas’s military chief, Mohammed Deif, in an air strike in the Gaza Strip on July 13. The strike targeted a compound in the Khan Younis area, and while Hamas has yet to confirm Deif’s death, Israel asserts it was a significant blow to the group.

Role in October 7 Attacks

Deif was allegedly one of the key figures behind the planning of the October 7 attacks in southern Israel, which resulted in 1,200 deaths and 251 hostages taken. Israel’s Defence Minister, Yoav Gallant, hailed Deif’s death as a “significant milestone” in dismantling Hamas, emphasizing that the group’s terrorists would either surrender or be eliminated.

Profile of Mohammed Deif

Appointed head of the Izzedine al-Qassam Brigades in 2002, Deif was long one of Israel’s most wanted men, surviving seven assassination attempts. Known for his role in various deadly operations against Israel, Deif helped engineer tunnels for Hamas fighters to enter Israel. His death follows multiple Israeli efforts to eliminate him, including a failed attempt in 2014 that killed his wife and infant son.

Escalation in Regional Tensions

The confirmation of Deif’s death comes amid heightened tensions between Israel and its adversaries. Recently, Israel targeted and killed Hezbollah commander Fuad Shukr in Beirut and Hamas political leader Ismael Haniyeh in Tehran. These events have stoked fears of a broader regional conflict, with Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu warning of severe repercussions for attacks on Israeli civilians.

</excerpt>

Israel aims to strike Hezbollah without escalating to all-out war, as Lebanon braces for retaliation after a rocket strike killed 12 children and teens in the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights. According to Israeli officials, the response is anticipated to involve a few days of fighting but will not lead to a broader conflict.

On Saturday, a rocket hit a sports field in a Druze village, prompting Israel and the United States to blame Lebanon’s Hezbollah. Hezbollah, however, denied any involvement. The incident heightened concerns about escalating hostilities between Israel and the Iran-backed group, potentially spiraling into a more destructive war.

Israel’s security cabinet has authorized Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Yoav Gallant to determine the timing and manner of the response. The Israeli newspaper Yedioth Ahronoth reported that the planned response would be “limited but significant,” with options ranging from attacks on infrastructure to targeting Hezbollah weapons depots or commanders.

Hostilities between Israel and Hezbollah have intensified since the Gaza war, marking the worst escalation since their 2006 conflict. Hezbollah, an ally of the Palestinian group Hamas, has stated its attacks are in support of Palestinians and will cease once Israel’s offensive on Gaza ends.

</excerpt>

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has informed the families of hostages held in Gaza that a potential deal for their release could be approaching. Netanyahu’s comments, made while he is in Washington, D.C., come amid ongoing conflict and intensive military operations in the Gaza Strip.

Military Operations and Civilian Impact

Israeli forces have intensified their military actions, focusing on a new raid in the southern Gaza area of Khan Younis. Authorities have ordered evacuations in certain districts, which they allege have been used by Palestinian militants for launching attacks. The escalation has led to significant displacement, with thousands of civilians fleeing airstrikes, according to U.N. officials.

Diplomatic Developments and Future Meetings

Netanyahu, currently in Washington, D.C., is scheduled to meet with U.S. President Joe Biden later this week and will address Congress. During a meeting with hostage families in the U.S. capital on Monday, Netanyahu suggested that conditions for a potential deal are improving. He noted that while a full ceasefire might not be immediate, there is optimism about advancing negotiations.

Mediation Efforts and Hostage Negotiations

Efforts to broker a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas have gained momentum recently, facilitated by Egypt and Qatar. Netanyahu indicated that negotiations might involve staged agreements, with hopes of leveraging future deals for the release of additional hostages.

Family Reactions and Political Pressure

Ruby Chen, whose son Itai Chen is a soldier held in Gaza, expressed cautious optimism about Netanyahu’s statements but urged U.S. President Biden to apply additional pressure on Israel to secure a deal. Chen’s comments reflect a broader sentiment among hostage families seeking tangible progress.

Accusations and Ongoing Negotiations

A Palestinian official involved in the mediation process accused Netanyahu of stalling, claiming that Hamas has shown necessary flexibility for an agreement. Israeli and Hamas negotiators are expected to resume talks on Thursday, focusing on exchanging hostages for Palestinian prisoners in Israeli jails. In a previous truce in November, 105 hostages were released in exchange for 240 Palestinian prisoners.

Casualties and Humanitarian Impact

The conflict, which began with a Hamas raid into southern Israel on October 7, has resulted in substantial casualties and destruction. Approximately 1,200 people were killed in the initial attack, with around 250 taken captive. Currently, Hamas and other militants are holding 120 hostages, with about a third of these individuals declared dead in absentia by Israeli authorities. The death toll among Palestinians has surpassed 39,000, with extensive displacement and destruction reported in the Gaza Strip due to Israeli retaliatory actions.

</excerpt>

The Israeli military continued its operations against Hamas in central and southern Gaza over the past 24 hours. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) adjusted the boundaries of the Al Mawasi humanitarian zone due to “significant terrorist activity and rocket fire” and urged residents of certain neighborhoods in Khan Yunis to evacuate ahead of new operations. According to IDF reports on Monday morning, Muhammad Abu Seidu, a Hamas Nukhba Force member involved in the October 7 attack on Israeli communities, was killed. Seidu had directed multiple attacks against Israeli forces in Gaza.

In the Tel al-Sultan neighborhood of Rafah, IDF troops engaged in close-quarters combat, eliminating dozens of terrorists. The Israeli Air Force conducted strikes on approximately 35 targets throughout Gaza, including terrorists, military structures, Hamas infrastructure, and a rocket launcher aimed at Israeli territory.

The IDF stated that the adjustment to the humanitarian zone’s boundaries was necessary due to intelligence indicating that Hamas had embedded terrorist infrastructure in the area. Consequently, it became too dangerous for Israeli forces to remain there. The army called on residents of eastern Khan Yunis neighborhoods to evacuate to Al Mawasi to avoid upcoming military actions against Hamas.

Hamas’s attack on Israeli communities near the Gaza border on October 7 resulted in at least 1,200 deaths and the capture of 252 Israelis and foreigners. Of the 116 hostages still held, more than 30 are believed to have died.

</excerpt>

In a terrible turn of occasions, four officers lost their lives in a building fixed with explosives amid the intense struggle in Rafah. This occurrence sheds light on the uncertain circumstances within the locale, with clashes between restricting groups appearing to be no sign of abstaining. The Israeli government has not revealed the identities of the fallen warriors, keeping in mind the secrecy surrounding military operations within the zone.

The officers fell casualty to a dangerous trap set inside the building, as both sides in the conflict are using more and more complex tactics. With tensions increasing and violence exacerbating, the safety of civilians has become a matter of concern. The ongoing efforts to calm things down fail to work at various levels. The fighting keeps getting worse, and without a good plan to stop it, civilians are the victims as they are suffering time and time again. All the worldwide bodies are protesting in order to stop the fight between Hamas and Israel.

The war in Gaza began after an attack in Israel on October 7, where Hamas militants killed 1200 civilians and took 251 hostages. Since then, over 37,000 people, including civilians and soldiers, have died in Gaza, out of whom, Israel claims to have killed around 15,000 on the battlefield. The Israel Defense Force (IDF) also states that around 1,000 terrorists were killed within Israel on October 7.

Israel is aiming to eliminate Hamas, although pressure for a ceasefire has been mounting over the Benjamin Netanyahu administration. United States Secretary of State Antony Blinken is currently in the region, negotiating for a deal between Israel and Hamas. The proposed deal includes a ceasefire resulting in the release of hostages. Hamas has agreed to a ceasefire following mediation efforts by Egypt and Qatar on June 10. However, Israel has expressed that the ceasefire proposal does not fully address its core demands and continues to conduct targeted strikes in Rafah. Some hostages have been released previously, and the IDF has confirmed the deaths of 41 hostages whose bodies are still held by the Palestinian terrorist organization.

</excerpt>

Amidst calls for Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s arrest, Israeli tanks have rolled into Rafah’s city centre. In their latest statement, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) announced that they now control the entire Philadelphi Corridor, a sliver of land that runs along Egypt’s border with Gaza. Meanwhile, as the death toll continues to rise, people across the world have united against the Israeli offensive in Rafah using the viral social media tag #AllEyesOnRafah.

Israel’s move violates the treaty with Egypt

“Hamas has been holding our hostages in Rafah, which is why our forces are operating in Rafah. Hamas is holding our hostages in living hell across our border in Gaza, including in Rafah. We will not stop fighting for their freedom.”

?Watch the full statement by IDF Spokesperson… pic.twitter.com/QkdyjgyVBQ

According to Al Jazeera, Israel’s move violates conditions of its treaty with Egypt, which stipulate that the strip, also known as the Salah al-Din Axis, remains a buffer zone overseen by Egypt from its side of the border. While the Netanyahu administration has long threatened a “full-scale” invasion of Rafah, on May 6, the IDF announced that it wanted to execute a limited operation against Hamas targets in eastern Rafah. It intensified air attacks on the area and ordered some 100,000 displaced Palestinians packed tightly there to evacuate to al-Mawasi which, aid organizations have said in horror, cannot support human life. By the next day, it had taken control of the Rafah land crossing, a death knell for aid deliveries into the besieged and battered Gaza Strip and its starving people.

</excerpt>

On Mother’s Day, a mother whose son is being held captive in Gaza by Hamas exchanged a devastating letter with him. In a video that she uploaded, Rachel Goldberg-Polin, the mother of 23-year-old Josh Goldberg-Polin, is shown reading a letter that she wrote the night before her son’s third birthday.

Rachel read the letter to her friend, “Hersh, these last three years have been the most challenging and best years of my life.” “My love for you is beyond words.”

Rachel recounted getting choked up when she would sneak into Hersh’s bed at night to watch the boy cuddle up with a teddy bear and sleep in his blue onesie.

For the first time in a few days, we will be cutting your beautiful, silky, curly hair, which I touched carefully. I walked back to my room and started crying uncontrollably,” she wrote.

According to Rachel, her husband would go take a look at Hersh and then return, saying, “There will be many more of these.” The Yiddish lullaby, “Your mother will cry a thousand tears before you grow to be a man,” was recited aloud by her.

“One day, when you have children—I can’t even imagine that right now—you will know this kind of so much more than love,” Rachel remarked of her son.

“You are my infant,” As your parent, my ultimate goal is to assist you in developing into a self-assured, self-sufficient, and independent individual. However, that implies you won’t require my assistance,” she continued, emphasising the fact that she has emerged as one of the leading voices demanding the release of her son and the other captives. And I believe that’s the reason my heart hurts so terribly at the moment. My goal is for you to grow up to be a well-rounded individual in this world.

It is noteworthy that Rachel was included in Time100: The Most Influential People in the World. She murmured, “I want to hold you forever.”

Time flies by. It takes only a glance at one’s offspring to comprehend this. I can’t believe how quickly time is passing and how soon we will be sending you to college,” she said. “What a mess I will be then, I can’t even begin to imagine.”

It would be nice if everything moved more slowly. Every minute I get to spend with you is precious. I’m afraid of how fortunate I am. How fortunate were Dada and I to have you?” she asked. “May this world shower you with love, happiness, kindness, and prosperity.”

“Nevertheless, above all, I hope you have a child similar to yourself, who will fill you with the same joy and light that you have filled me with,” she wished. “Oh, Mama, how I adore you.”

“Thank you, Josh, for making me a mother,” Rachel said as she wrapped up the video. “I love you,” she said. Remain powerful. Stay alive. At that, she started crying.

</excerpt>

Secretary-General of UN Antonio Guterres called for the immediate halt to the Israel-Hamas conflict in Gaza, hostage release, and provision of humanitarian aid for the besieged Palestine territories on Sunday.

While addressing a video conference at international donors’ conference (organized by International Islamic Charitable Organization (IICO) and the UN’s humanitarian coordination organization OCHA) in Kuwait, Antonio Guterres said “I repeat my call, the world’s call for an immediate humanitarian ceasefire, the unconditional release of all hostages, and an immediate surge in humanitarian aid.”

However, he also added, that the ceasefire will be just a beginning. There is a long road to go heal the devastation and the trauma of the war.

His remarks come around the time, when Israel continues to conduct strikes after its expansion order in Rafah. Despite international condemnation issued against military operation in the eastern side of the city.

“The war in Gaza is causing horrific human suffering, devastating lives, tearing families apart and rendering huge numbers of people homeless, hungry and traumatised.”said Gutteres.

Earlier on Friday, the UN chief warned about Gaza’s imminent epic humanitarian disaster, if Israel conducts ground invasion in Rafah at Nairobi.

Meanwhile, Israel has launched a retaliatory offensive in Gaza October 7th attack, in order to destroy Hamas.

Thus, killing more than 34,971 people mostly women and children as per Hamas-run territory’s health ministry.

</excerpt>

Rejecting international pressure to halt the war in Gaza, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has declared that if “forced,” Israel will “stand alone” in its war against Hamas.
Netanyahu spoke after President Joe Biden said the United States would not provide offensive weapons for Israel’s long-promised assault on the southern Gaza city of Rafah.

“As the Prime Minister of Israel, the one and only Jewish State, I pledge here today, from Jerusalem, on this Holocaust Remembrance Day, if Israel is forced to stand alone, Israel will stand alone. But we know we are not alone, because countless decent people around the world support our just cause. And I say to you we will defeat our genocidal enemies,” Netanyahu said on Thursday.

The Israeli PM said that when Jewish people were defenceless 80 years ago, no nation came for their help. “Eighty years ago, in the Holocaust, the Jewish people were totally defenceless against those who sought our destruction. No nation came to our aid, ” Israeli PM said in a fiery speech marking the country’s annual Holocaust memorial day.
“Today, we again confront enemies bent on our destruction. I say to the leaders of the world, no amount of pressure, no decision by any international forum will stop Israel from defending itself,” he said.

Netanyahu added, “If we have to stand alone, we will stand alone. If we need to, we will fight with our fingernails. But we have much more than fingernails.”
Yom Hashoah, the day Israel observes as a memorial for the 6 million Jews killed by Nazi Germany and its allies in the Holocaust.

The conflict in Gaza escalated after the October 7 attack by Hamas, where about 2,500 terrorists breached the border into Israel from the Gaza Strip, leading to casualties and the seizure of hostages.

Israel has since, characterised its Gaza offensive as targeting Hamas’ infrastructure with the goal of eliminating the entire terror group while making efforts to minimize civilian casualties.

On May 5, Hamas fired a barrage of rockets from the area of the Rafah border crossing and near an area where displaced Palestinians were sheltering in tents.

The barrage targeted the Kerem Shalom border crossing, killing four soldiers. Of all the Gaza border crossings, Kerem Shalom is equipped to handle the most humanitarian aid trucks daily. The crossing has been closed since the attack.

Hamas’s control of the border crossing allowed it to hijack humanitarian aid deliveries from Egypt. In recent days, residents of certain Rafah neighbourhoods received phone calls, SMS messages, air-dropped flyers, and media broadcasts instructing them to evacuate to expanded humanitarian zones in Khan Yunis and the coastal area of Al-Mawasi.

The flyers included maps showing the affected zones, and aid organisations were updated on the evacuation plans. Also receiving messages to evacuate were displaced Palestinians camping in a strip of land along the Gaza-Egypt border known as the Philadelphi corridor. This buffer zone was created to prevent weapons smuggling after Israel disengaged from Gaza in 2006. But in 2007, Hamas violently seized control of Gaza from the PA.

At least 1,200 people were killed and 240 Israelis and foreigners were taken hostage in Hamas’s attacks on Israeli communities near the Gaza border on October 7. Around 30 of the remaining 133 hostages are believed dead.

</excerpt>

Israel’s War Cabinet Monday night unanimously voted that Israel will continue the military operation in Rafah in Gaza to “exert military pressure on Hamas in order to promote the release of our hostages and the other goals of the war.”
In response to Hamas’ offer for a hostage deal, the War Cabinet said, “At the same time, although the Hamas proposal is far from Israel’s necessary requirements, Israel will send a delegation of mediators to exhaust the possibility of reaching an agreement under conditions acceptable to Israel.”
Reports were made Monday night that the Hamas terrorist organization announced that it had agreed to a deal for the release of Israeli hostages held in Gaza for the past seven months. However, no confirmation has been made, nor any details revealed, as to what exactly Hamas has agreed to.

Prior to now, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu emphasised that complying with the call to terminate the war would mean giving in to pressure and losing the battle.

In Gaza, medical personnel and first responders documented 16 casualties from Israeli airstrikes in the southern city of Rafah on Sunday, occurring shortly after Hamas rockets killed three Israeli soldiers earlier in the day. Emergency responders informed AFP that the casualties in Rafah included seven individuals from one family and nine from another.

Medical sources confirmed that two separate airstrikes took place in different locations within the city.

Before this, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu affirmed the military’s preparedness to initiate a ground offensive on Gaza’s far-southern Rafah city, regardless of the status of ongoing ceasefire negotiations with Hamas.

Netanyahu’s declaration was made despite significant concerns raised by key ally Washington, and it was issued just hours before the scheduled arrival of US Secretary of State Antony Blinken in Israel for his latest Middle East crisis tour.

This invasion resulted in approximately 1,200 deaths and sparked the ongoing conflict in Gaza.

Haliva, who served the Israeli military for 2 1/2 years, submitted his resignation, making him the first senior Israeli official to step down in response to the Hamas assault. Hamas, an Iran-backed group designated as a terrorist organization by the US and the European Union, carried out the attack that breached Gaza’s heavily fortified border with southern Israel, leading to the overrunning of communities and military bases.

In his resignation letter, Haliva took responsibility for the intelligence division’s failure to prevent the incursion, stating,

“The intelligence division under my command did not live up to the task we were entrusted with,”

“Until the end of my term, I will do everything to bring about the defeat of Hamas and those seeking to harm us and for the return of all the hostages and captives to their homes and land.”

The aftermath of the October 7 events has seen significant public outcry in Israel, with tens of thousands of protestors calling for Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government to take responsibility and resign. Netanyahu has not acknowledged personal responsibility for the intelligence and operational lapses, emphasizing that investigations will follow only after the conclusion of the ongoing conflict.

The Accountant General of the Ministry of Finance in Israel has released a preliminary assessment of the country’s debt-to-GDP ratio for the year 2023, revealing a notable increase attributed to the ongoing war in Gaza. According to the report, the public debt in relation to GDP rose by 1.6 percentage points, reaching 62.1%, compared to 60.5% in the preceding year.

Similarly, the government debt-to-GDP ratio witnessed a corresponding uptick of 1.6 percentage points, standing at 60.4% in 2023, up from 58.8% in 2022. This surge in debt levels was anticipated due to heightened government spending to fund the protracted conflict in Gaza. The war not only inflated military expenses but also led to an escalation in civilian outlays and a reduction in state revenues.

As a consequence, the year 2023 concluded with a budget deficit equivalent to 4.2% of the GDP. The government’s debt for the year amounted to approximately 1.127 billion Shekels (USD 310 million), marking an increase from the 2022 figure of around 1.037 billion Shekels (USD 280 million).

This rise in government debt can be attributed to a net positive capital infusion of about 55 billion Shekels (USD 15 billion), with a significant portion raised during the last quarter of 2023, totaling around 48 billion Shekels. Additionally, market forces, including inflation, interest rates, and exchange rate fluctuations, had an impact on the debt stock, contributing approximately 35 billion Shekels (USD 9.4 billion) to the overall increase. This comprehensive assessment underscores the financial repercussions of Israel’s involvement in the Gaza conflict, with ramifications on both the fiscal deficit and debt metrics.
