‘Govinda Was Always Insecure’ : Pahlaj Nihalani Slams Ex-Star

In a recent podcast interview with Learn From The Legend, filmmaker Pahlaj Nihalani opened up about casting Govinda during a time when the actor didn’t have any work. He recalled their early collaborations and explained how Govinda’s talent, despite initial doubts, led to his casting in Ilzaam (1986).

When Govinda Struggled, Pahlaj Nihalani Stepped In

“I made four films with Govinda,” Nihalani said. “After Aandhi Toofan, I wanted to cast Mithun Chakraborty and Shatrughan Sinha again, but Mithun’s dates didn’t work out. That’s when Govinda entered the picture.”

He admitted to being unimpressed at first. “I saw his pictures and I didn’t like them at all. I didn’t like his look. But then he brought me a video cassette of his dance, and breakdance was huge at the time thanks to Michael Jackson. I didn’t like his face much, but I cast him because of his work—his dancing, action, everything. My story had a lot of action, so I took a day and got back to him.”

Nihalani continued, “As an actor, there’s still no one as talented as him today. He may not have fit roles like a doctor or an advocate because of his height, but once someone becomes a star, you can make them do anything.”

Govinda’s Struggles and Insecurity

The filmmaker shared that Govinda was out of work when he cast him in both Shola Aur Shabnam and Aankhen. “When he didn’t have any work, I gave him Shola Aur Shabnam, his first time doing comedy. Later, when he was struggling again, I offered him Aankhen. I even changed his image for that film. Originally, I wanted to cast Dilip Kumar and Mehmood. If you watch it today, you’ll see shades of both.”

When asked about Govinda’s alleged arrogance, Nihalani said it stemmed from insecurity. “Govinda was always insecure. His father was a big hero under Mehboob Khan, but he faced major losses and struggled. Govinda carried that pain with him.”

He added, “His main focus was earning money. He had responsibilities—his siblings and all. He was caught up in money matters and that changed his attitude. When there’s a lot of work and pressure, a habit forms. He became defensive. All of that ate him up. But if he hadn’t faced those struggles, you’d never find an actor like him, even if you searched.”

“Why has Govinda not been seen in 17 years? The problem is that his circle is the wrong one. It’s a wrong circle,” Sunita said. She added, “Today, my fights with him are because I can’t lie, and I do not appreciate flattery.”
Without naming names, Sunita pointed to four people who she believes are not helping his career grow. “Today he has four people – a writer, a musician, a secretary and a lawyer friend. They are of no use. They only say ‘wah, wah!’ If he makes music, they say ‘wah, wah… kalam kar diya.’ They should tell him the truth. When I tell him the truth, he gets upset.”

Stuck in the 90s, Out of Touch in 2025

Sunita also said that Govinda continues trying to recreate the kind of work that made him a superstar in the 90s, something she thinks no longer resonates. “I tell him the 90s era is over. It is 2025. Look at what’s working on Netflix and digital platforms. But he stays with his ‘wah, wah’ production,” she said. “I told him, change your circle. For as long as you have these 4–5 people, they won’t let you go forward.”

Govinda, known for hits like Raja Babu, Coolie No. 1, Hero No. 1, and Haseena Maan Jayegi, began to see his stardom fade in the early 2000s. Although he made a brief return with a few films in the late 2000s, his career has been declining steadily, with no film releases since 2019’s Rangeela Raja, which failed at the box office.

Govinda is in news again.. this time not due to politics or films but on a tragic spectacle of breakdown of marriage after 37 years . His fans and well wishers pray that divorce reports prove to be untrue and he and Sunita continue in united and marital bliss.
On the personal front, Govinda is married to Sunita, the friend who became his wife when he was barely out of his teens. Reminiscing about the moment of his engagement, he had said, ‘I came home one day from shooting and my mother said it’s high time I got married. Sunita and I were married the next morning at 4.30 a.m.’ Govinda described it as a ‘love cum arranged marriage’, since the two knew each other well. ‘We used to fight constantly,’ Sunita recalls. ‘He thought I was too mod [modern] for him.’ But he married at his mother Nirmala Devi’s insistence. ‘I never questioned my mother,’ he says. ‘I just tried to give her all the happiness that was in my hands.’

There is more to Govinda’s private life, however, than this bland statement reveals. There were fleeting rumours of his link-up with Karisma (previously known as Karishma) Kapoor when she first started out in films and was paired opposite him. But the love of his life seems to have been his co-star Neelam Kothari.
Film glossy Stardust had run a story on the Neelam–Govinda romance under the heading: ‘Why Govinda could not marry Neelam.’ According to contributor Suguna Sundaram, the two were from drastically different backgrounds. The actor, who described himself quite unapologetically as ‘an unpolished boor’, was smitten by his Hong Kong-born leading lady, who seemed to him like ‘a Dresden doll – pure, clean, polished and dignified’. He confessed to having felt inadequate in her presence, because his spoken English was far from sophisticated. Govinda met Neelam for the first time at producer Pranlal Mehta’s office, where she had turned up in white shorts, her long hair flowing behind her ‘like an angel’s’, as he put it later. Govinda’s alleged romantic involvement with Rani Mukerji, whom he would meet on the sets of Hadh Kar Di Aapne (2000), created quite a scandal, as, by then, he was a married man. The Times of India wrote of the rumours circulating about the pair: of the actor gifting Rani an expensive car, diamond jewellery and even a high-end apartment. The affair supposedly reached a point where Sunita registered her protest by moving out of her marital home. Eventually, Govinda’s unwillingness to give up on his marriage would lead to the break-up of his relationship with Rani who, many years later, went on to marry billionaire film producer and director Aditya Chopra.

There must have been something special about the ‘Virar ka chhokra’ to attract women who wouldn’t normally have considered him their ‘type’. It could well have been the quality that has been described as his ‘simplicity’, but there was obviously more to him than met the eye. Even author Shobhaa De, who had spent an evening with Govinda for a film-tabloid feature, was impressed by him. ‘He has a native intelligence and a terrific sense of humour,’ she would observe, adding, ‘and he’s a shrewd businessman. He’s figured out what his audience wants and he delivers it.’ Speaking to the author, film-maker Mahesh Bhatt commented on the Govinda ‘magic’ and his success in films which was based on ‘essentially a salt-of-the-earth everyman appeal combined with sincerity and innocence. His Indianness was his major asset’. Bhatt, who had directed him in Awaargi (1990), would add, ‘People could tune into him.’ In Govinda, David Dhawan saw the ‘yahoo exuberance’ of Shammi Kapoor and the poignancy of Raj Kapoor’s Anari (1959). ‘Govinda had a natural vitality, which was spontaneous, not cultivated,’ he remarked.

The same spontaneous charm would work wonders for his political career soon after Sonia Gandhi took over as Congress president in late 1990s. An accomplished and successful actor by then, Govinda was invited to a high-profile political event organized at Congress leader Murli Deora’s residence to welcome ‘politician’ Sonia Gandhi in Mumbai. An accomplished and successful actor by now, Govinda was invited to a high-profile political event organized at Murli Deora’s residence to welcome ‘politician’ Sonia Gandhi in Mumbai. Deora’s wife Hema clearly remembers how Murli had led Govinda directly to the table where Sonia was seated and introduced him. The Congress president is said to have remarked, ‘Of course, I know him. My children keep talking about him.’ Govinda was then seated next to her, while the hosts Murli and Hema excused themselves to attend to other guests. Hema recalls noticing from a distance how the actor had Sonia Gandhi in splits several times on that occasion. Congress leaders close to her had then observed that the AICC chief had been instantly struck by Govinda’s simplicity and easy manner and had invited him to pay a visit to 10, Janpath when the actor was next in Delhi – a meeting that would finally materialize in 2003. Govinda maintained that he had great admiration for the Nehru–Gandhi family. ‘I chose the Congress for its thoughts, its acceptance of people of all opinions and its wide perspective,’ he would declare.

In 2004 Lok Sabha polls, Govinda had earned a tag of a giant killer when he had posted a spectacular victory against BJP veteran and former central minister Ram Naik. However, by 2008, the Congress MP from Mumbai North had become disillusioned and made several threats to quit politics. From January–February 2008 till May 2009, his association with the Congress and his parliamentary constituency were minimal. The actor did not campaign for the Congress during the 2009 polls, but the Party’s nominee Sanjay Nirupam won the seat.
Govinda had little to do with the Congress’s ideology or its social programmes and had remained absent for most of the Lok Sabha sessions. In fact, as MP, the actor had earned the dubious distinction of skipping the highest number of Lok Sabha meetings during his tenure (2004–2009) in Parliament, with records showing that he had attended merely 12 per cent of all the Parliament sessions during his five years there. Moreover, the few speeches and remarks he had made in Parliament were deemed ‘politically incorrect’ and a source of embarrassment to the Party leadership.
Govinda remained politically inactive during the second phase of UPA. He was miffed as neither Sonia Gandhi nor prime minister Dr Manmohan Singh offered a Rajya Sabha seat. While speaking to this correspondent then, Govinda would often withhold comments, merely expressing his unwillingness to talk about politics. ‘You are free to draw your conclusions on why I left politics,’ he had told me, avoiding comment on politics and his experience of working with Sonia, Dr Manmohan Singh and the Congress Party. ‘I felt that it would be proper to quit politics because I didn’t have much experience in this field,’ he said by way of explanation.

However, for an actor known mostly for his loud brand of comedy and equally loud outfits, along with his sexual innuendo-laden dialogues and violent pelvic thrusts – all carefully calculated to target and win over the masses, primarily, the front-benchers in the audience – Govinda had been a surprise as a political package. During the tireless rounds of campaigning, the enthusiastic actor often spouted poetry with the same ease with which he had executed his famous ‘latka-jhatkas’, the suggestive dance moves, that had earned him a vast fan following. He also had a quick wit about him: when someone asked him once, if, with Atal Bihari Vajpayee around, more poetry would be recited and there would be more ‘taal-mel’, or harmony, in Parliament, Govinda had retorted: ‘Taal toh zaroor hoga, lekin mel ke bare mein keh nahi sakte (Rhythm will certainly be there, but I can’t be so sure about harmony).’
That was the charm of the ‘Virar ka chhokra’, as the boy from Virar was fondly referred to. Coming from the fringes of society was, surprisingly enough, one of Govinda’s greatest strengths. He was born as Govind Ahuja to a Punjabi family that had settled in Maharashtra and fallen on hard times even before his birth. His mother, the late Nirmala Devi, was a classical vocalist and his father Arun Ahuja, a struggling film actor who is best remembered for his role in Mehboob Khan’s Aurat (1940).

Long before Rahul Gandhi’s politically motivated Metro rides to project himself as one of the people, it was Govinda who would board the local train to garner support for his Party. Potential voters felt reassured and warmed to him. ‘Yeh bheedu toh apun ka aadmi hai (This man is one of us),’ they were heard murmuring to each other. A big crowd always accompanied him, talking to him and cheering him on with, ‘Chal, Govinda bhai, chal.’
At times actress Zeenat Aman would be by his side in the election campaign. And contribute her bit by saying, ‘They call us nachne gaane wale. But let me tell you we sell our art for a living, but never our integrity (iman nahin bechte).’ ‘Govinda ala re ala (Govinda is here)!’ he would exclaim, adding, ‘Ram Naik gela re gela (Ram Naik is about to be sent packing).’

In an interview for the Hindustan Times in 2017, Govinda had said, “I am proud to say that whatever I have ever wanted, I have done it my way,’ he would declare. ‘I didn’t have to please anyone to get where I am. I worked towards it. I wanted to be at the top of films, I did it my way. Then I wanted to try my hand at politics, and I did that. In 2009, I wanted to get out of it [politics] without any controversies, and I have to admit, I’m really very lucky to [have managed that]. Now I am here again, entering films, when I want to.’

Govinda and Sunita Ahuja Heading for Divorce?

According to reports, Bollywood actor Govinda and his wife, Sunita Ahuja, are heading for divorce after 37 years of marriage. The reports coming in from various media outlets claim that the couple recognized for their strong bond and chemistry is now facing serious marital problems: charges of separation have surfaced.

While neither Govinda nor Sunita commented on the issue, reports suggest that some differences, daily fights, and a dissimilar standard of lifestyle caused the rift in their relationship.

In August last year, the two made their last public appearance together during the show Entertainment Ki Raat, where Govinda stated, “Sunita meri zindagi mein jabse aayi hai, main sudhar gaya hoon” (Since Sunita came in my life, I have corrected myself). However, now this statement appears ironic in the light of separation rumors.

The upcoming episode of The Great Indian Kapil Show will be extra special marking Govinda’s return after his leg injury, which occurred when he accidentally shot himself in the foot. The much-hyped match will also be the reunion of Govinda and nephew, Krushna Abhishek, a key member of the cast. Govinda will also feature alongside Shakti Kapoor and Chunky Panday, with the promo already doing the rounds, giving fans a peek into the fun-filled camaraderie among the iconic comedy stars of the 90s. But it is the emotional reunion with family members which constitutes the crux of the film.

While greeting Krushna warmly, the promo shows Govinda and Krushna dancing together, embraced each other. Elated by the moment, Krushna chuckles, “Do saal baad mile hai, aaj nahi chodunga main,” as his sister, Arti Singh, looks tearfully from the audience.

At one time during the performance, Krushna, in his jesting mood, he refers to Kiku Sharda as a “gadha.” Govinda, turning to Krushna and their familiar banter replies, “Aur ek gadha hai yahan,” referring to his nephew.

For those uninitiated, Govinda and Krushna had a tiff some years back, in 2016, when Govinda took offense at a joke made by Krushna. Things took a turn for worse after Krushna’s wife, Kashmera Shah, posted a rather cheeky tweet regarding people dancing for money that was being perceived as a jibe at Govinda. Govinda’s wife, Sunita Ahuja, further asserted that she would have not appeared on the Netflix version of The Kapil Sharma Show due to the family feud and said that reconciliation did not look possible.

Responding to Sunita’s comments, Krushna shared with Hindustan Times, “I love her a lot. Mami has always loved me like her kid, and also done a lot for me. She has all the right to be angry on me. I know she says everything in anger, but it is nothing else. Main unka mana lunga, she is my mami.”

The tensions between them appeared to have eased when Kashmera visited Govinda in the hospital with her children, and Govinda also attended Arti’s wedding earlier this year, signaling a possible end to their feud.

In Bade Miyan Chote Miyan, Amitabh Bachchan and Govinda enacted double roles that were a huge hit the day they were released. The movie earned thrice its budget, considerably leaving a rich booty for its makers. This action-comedy drama was shot at Ramoji Film City, Hyderabad.

In 2024, a sequel under the title of *Bade Miyan Chote Miyan 2* was released but it very badly flopped at the box office. Though some people in the audiences were appreciative of the plot, it did not justify the financial success it sought. Made on a budget of Rs 350 crore, it could only gross Rs 102.16 crore.

Anupam Kher Provides Health Update on Govinda After Bullet Injury: ‘He Is Progressing Well’

A few days ago, veteran actor Govinda was hospitalized after accidentally shooting himself in the leg. The 60-year-old actor’s licensed firearm misfired when he dropped it while placing it in an almirah. Following several days of treatment at CritiCare Hospital in Mumbai, Govinda has since been discharged. Recently, Govinda’s brother met with actor Anupam Kher to discuss the actor’s recovery and his overall health.

On October 18, Anupam Kher shared a video on his Instagram featuring Govinda’s brother, Kirti Kumar. During their conversation, they addressed Govinda’s health following his discharge from the hospital. In the caption accompanying the video, Kher wrote, “Encounter in the Park: I was so happy to meet #KirtiKumar ji after a long long time. Kirti Ji directed one of my favourite films #Hatya. We spoke about many things including my friend and his younger brother #Govinda’s leg injury. Relieved to know that he is progressing well.”

In the video, Kher, known for his role in ‘Kuch Kuch Hota Hai’, mentioned that he hadn’t seen the director in years and highlighted that Kirti Kumar directed his 1988 action thriller ‘Hatya’, in which Govinda also starred. Kher later asked why Kirti stopped making films, to which Kirti explained that it all depended on circumstances and went on to praise Kher. Kher added, “We also spoke about time spent together, 90’s cinema and also the importance of being kind in life. Nice to meet you, my friend! See you soon with a film script! Jai Ho! #Memories #Kindness.”

Kher’s post attracted the attention of actress Mahima Chaudhry, who commented, “AK u have this amazing ability to touch people’s hearts and bring out the best in them. Govinda Opens Up About The Time He Accidentally Shot Himself

Actor Govinda, who recently made headlines for accidentally shooting himself in the left leg, has finally opened up about the incident during a press conference held after his discharge from the hospital on October 4. The mishap occurred on October 1, and Govinda shared his disbelief when it happened.

“Thoda gehra lag gaya tha, jab laga tab vishwas nahi hua. Aisa laga ke yeh kya hua? (The wound was deep, but I couldn’t believe it had happened. I was thinking, ‘What just happened?’),” Govinda recalled.

According to the Indian Express, the incident occurred early in the morning around 4:45-5:00 a.m., as Govinda was preparing for a show in Kolkata. The revolver accidentally slipped, resulting in a misfire that left him startled as blood started flowing.

Govinda explained that he did not want to trouble anyone, so he recorded a few videos before being quickly taken to Dr. Agarwal, who accompanied him to the hospital for treatment.

When questioned about carrying a loaded revolver, the “Naseeb” actor admitted, “Main thoda sa mast raha karta hoon (I’m a bit carefree by nature),” and didn’t give it much thought at the time. He emphasized the importance of being cautious, hoping others can learn from his experience.

He explained his need for a revolver, stating that fame comes with its own challenges. “Fame is a flame, and you have to be aware of it all over the world. It is like fire when you become successful, and you have to tread carefully,” Govinda noted. He acknowledged the support he receives, but also the competition and jealousy that accompany success.

Before concluding, Govinda asked that no misunderstandings arise from the incident, and it shouldn’t be linked to anyone. “I would like to say that this incident should not be attached to anyone or anything. There should be no galatfehmi (misunderstandings) around,” he added, thanking his fans for their continued love and support.

This is the second time in less than a week that she has come to see her uncle, who is Govinda’s niece Kashmera Shah. The actor suffered an injury in his leg on Tuesday as his revolver accidentally went off at his Mumbai residence while he was getting ready to leave for the airport.

Govinda’s Brother Speaks

Govinda’s brother Kirti Kumar told the media, “Woh theek hojaye toh aaj sham ko hi ghar chale jaaye. Itna hopeful toh hai. Paer k anguthe mein goli lagi hai. Woh improve karrahe hai (If he gets well, we will take him home this evening. We are that hopeful. The bullet hit his big toe. He is improving).” He also clarified that Govinda was checking his revolver when it fell, causing the accidental discharge.

Govinda’s Statement

Govinda almost immediately recorded an audio message for his fans, “With the blessings of my fans, my parents, and god, I am doing better now. I was hit by a bullet, which has now been removed. I thank all of you for your prayers. ”

The Incident

According to Govinda’s manager, Shashi Sinha, the incident took place around 4:45 am. For his part, Govinda had been preparing to leave for a 6 am flight to Kolkata for a show. It seems putting his licensed revolver in the cupboard accidentally pushed the trigger, and the bullet hit his leg.

Inspiration and Design

Kyo Kii… Main Jhuth Nahin Bolta drew inspiration from the 1997 Hollywood comedy Liar Liar, starring Jim Carrey. Additionally, the film’s official poster was noted for its similarities to the one from Jim Carrey’s Me, Myself & Irene (2000).

Rejected Offers

Shah Rukh Khan was originally considered for the lead role but turned it down, leading to Govinda being cast instead. Saif Ali Khan was also approached for a supporting role but declined, which resulted in Sharad Kapoor taking on the part.

Box Office Performance

The film had a challenging box office performance. It faced stiff competition from Ajnabee, starring Bobby Deol and Akshay Kumar. With a budget of Rs 8.50 crore, Kyo Kii… Main Jhuth Nahin Bolta grossed only Rs 7.95 crores nett.
