Her body was found in a forest with throat injuries. Police suspect a relationship dispute; Kevin was arrested in Hubli and questioned.
</excerpt>

A Bengaluru man, 22, has been arrested for reportedly killing his girlfriend in Goa, although he had reportedly taken her there to marry her.

The suspect, Sanjay Kevin M, a North Bengaluru resident, allegedly murdered his partner, Roshni Moses M, 22, after an altercation. Roshni, an employee of a Karnataka school, hailed from the same area as Kevin, who is jobless.

Authorities discovered Roshni’s body about 100 metres off the road inside Mollem Wildlife Sanctuary. Her throat had been slit and she had suffered multiple injuries, suspected to be caused by a sharp weapon.

A local farmer, who had gone to search for bibem (sprouted cashew nuts), came across the body on Monday morning and immediately alerted the police.

South Goa Superintendent of Police Tikam Singh Verma confirmed, “The accused and the victim were in a relationship, and it seems to be some personal relationship issue that triggered this.” Kevin believed that Roshni was being unfaithful to him, police said.

India Today quoted police authorities stating, “They had come to Goa from Bengaluru to marry. But for some reason or other, there was a quarrel between the two, and two days back Sanjay murdered Roshni and dumped the body in the forest.”

Investigation further discovered that the pair had come from Bengaluru to Goa on a Kadamba Transport Corporation bus, with the plan of staying overnight in the coastal state. Nonetheless, due to reasons that are yet to be determined, they disembarked at a secluded area.

An update in the case was provided by a bus ticket discovered among the woman’s items, leading police to Kevin since the ticket was booked under his name.

Kevin was finally tracked and arrested in Hubli, Karnataka, on Tuesday and brought to Goa for interrogation.

</excerpt>

A sessions court in Goa has sentenced Vikat Bhagat to life imprisonment for the rape and murder of a British-Irish national, whose body was found near a beach in Goa in 2017.

Following the sentencing, Investigating Officer Inspector Filomeno Costa reflected on the case, stating, “The main part of the investigation was that we cordoned off the area and called the forensic team and we collected scientific evidence…we had many challenges. As the investigating officer, I was present in court at every hearing…today the court has given its verdict and the accused has been sentenced to life imprisonment.”

Advocate Vikram Varma, who represented the victim’s family, commended the police for their efforts in handling the case.

He also emphasized the impact of law enforcement on tourism, stating, “…If the police in any country try to protect criminals, tourism will suffer. But here the police have done a very good job in showing that if a crime takes place, they will take action.”

Bhagat was convicted of multiple charges, including murder, rape, robbery, and destruction of evidence. The victim was discovered in an isolated field in Canacona, Goa, in 2017.

The shortage, caused by an altercation between beef vendors and cow protection groups.

A beef vendor shutdown in Goa has caused significant disruption just before Christmas. Bakeries, cafes, and eateries are facing low beef supplies, which are key for popular Goan snacks. This shutdown follows an altercation in Margao, South Goa, where three beef vendors were injured in a fight with members of a cow protection group.

Christmas Celebrations Affected

The demand for beef-based snacks increases during Christmas in Goa, particularly due to its large Christian population. Beef is essential for croquettes, pan rolls, samosas, and puffs. Agapito Menezes, president of the All Goa Bakers Association, said, “Goan bakeries are dependent on local beef sellers for the meat used in several savouries. However, we did not get any beef supply on Monday.” He added that this shortage leads to financial losses for local businesses.

Changes in Local Menus

With the shortage, Floyd Pereira, owner of the Tea Centre in Panaji, shared that sales of beef patties and savouries have stopped. Instead, more Christmas sweets are being sold. This disruption raises concerns about the impact on Goa’s culinary traditions, especially since tourism is a major economic driver.

Concerns Over Beef Supply

Jack Sukhija, president of the Travel Tourism Association Goa, warned about the wider effects. He said, “It is a very bad sign that we are getting into a breakdown of a certain food in the food chain, especially considering that India is one of the largest exporters of beef.” He emphasized that the industry could face severe consequences if the supply does not resume soon.

Reason Behind the Shutdown

The shutdown stemmed from a violent incident in the SGPDA market in Margao. A clash between cow vigilantes and beef vendors escalated into a fight. Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant promised action against those who break the law.

In conclusion, the beef shortage is creating serious concerns for Goan cuisine, especially during the holiday season when demand is high.

Several Indian tourists have recently shared troubling accounts of harassment and exploitation by what they call the “Goa taxi mafia,” spurring a conversation about the state’s tourism decline. This discussion emerged after CEIC Data revealed that foreign tourist numbers in Goa remain significantly below pre-Covid levels, with only 1.5 million foreign visitors in 2023, down from 8.5 million in 2019. Ramanuj Mukherjee, an X user, shared the data, adding, “Tourism in Goa is down in the dumps. Foreign tourists have abandoned the state already. Look at 2019 vs. 2023 numbers.” Mukherjee’s post quickly went viral, receiving over 2 million views and sparking heated debate among social media users.

Tourist Decline Linked to ‘Taxi Mafia’ and Overpriced Services

Locals and tourists alike have voiced concerns about Goa’s taxi services, which many describe as monopolized and exploitative. Many tourists recounted experiences of being threatened or overcharged, often without alternative transportation options. One X user, Madhur, shared how he was harassed by a group of taxi drivers when he tried to pick up a German friend from Benaulim Beach. “They stopped us, and soon there were more than 10 drivers ready to beat us up,” he wrote, adding that his German friend was charged ₹1,800 for a 37-kilometer ride.

HAVE A LOOK AT THE VIRAL POST:

Tourism in Goa is down in dumps

Foreign tourists have abandoned the state already. Look at 2019 v 2023 numbers. Russians and Brits who used to visit annually have opted for Sri Lanka instead.

Indian tourists still visiting, but soon likely to ditch it as word spreads about… pic.twitter.com/RF2TLC2Zvi

— Ramanuj Mukherjee (@law_ninja) November 5, 2024

Others, like fitness influencer Chirag Barjatya, reported being forced to abandon foreign friends whom they had offered rides, as local taxi drivers aggressively demanded they leave their passengers or risk damage to their vehicle. These experiences have left many tourists disenchanted with Goa and contemplating other destinations.

Alternatives Abroad Gain Favor Among Tourists

Rising travel costs and reports of harassment are prompting Indian tourists to explore other options. Many noted that countries like Thailand, Sri Lanka, and Vietnam offer similar experiences at more affordable rates, better services, and easier transportation. The situation worsened after Goa’s taxi unions resisted ride-hailing services such as Ola and Uber, leading to an absence of competition and higher taxi fares.

Social media users highlighted that a flight from Mumbai to Goa could cost less than a local taxi ride in Goa. “I paid ₹2,000 for a flight ticket from Mumbai to Goa in 2018 but had to pay ₹2,500 for a taxi from Goa Airport to Arambol,” one user recalled.

Shifting Tourism Trends: A Growing Preference for Southeast Asia

Many travelers now prioritize Southeast Asia over Goa, finding destinations like Thailand and Vietnam to be more cost-effective, especially as Thailand recently removed visa requirements for Indian tourists. “With Thailand making it visa-free for Indians, it’s going to be worse for Goa,” one user noted, while others mentioned how improved transportation, lower costs, and better-preserved beaches made Southeast Asia more attractive.

With increasing tourism in Southeast Asia and ongoing concerns about Goa’s local practices, experts believe that Goa’s tourism sector may continue to suffer unless significant changes are made. Local authorities may need to reconsider transportation regulations and tourism standards to compete in an evolving tourism landscape.

Effigy-Burning Tradition Rooted in Goan Culture

The burning of Narakasura’s effigy is a long-standing Goan tradition observed on Narak Chaturthi. Effigies, made over weeks from wood and grass, differ from area to area. One participant noted, “This is our tradition. It takes 15-20 days to make Narakasur, and we burn it at 5 o’clock.”

India Illuminates with Diwali Festivities

Across India, Diwali celebrations are in full swing, with homes decorated in colorful rangoli, flowers, and lights. Fireworks displays, prayers to Goddess Lakshmi, and the sharing of sweets and gifts fill the air with joy. The festival, known as the Festival of Lights, signifies the triumph of light over darkness and good over evil, as communities come together to celebrate this time-honored tradition.

</excerpt>

When Asia’s largest electronic dance music (EDM) festival revealed plans to return to Goa in 2024, it immediately triggered concerns among locals. The festival’s history in Goa has long been controversial, with many residents fearing its impact on their peaceful environment.

The Legacy of Sunburn

Founded by Indian entrepreneur Shailendra Singh, Sunburn has been a prominent event for EDM fans for over 17 years. After its launch in Goa in 2007, the festival became an international music staple, recognized by CNN as one of the top 12 music festivals globally. Although it moved to Pune in 2016 due to growing opposition, the festival retained its status in the global festival circuit, hosting top acts like Carl Cox, Tiesto, David Guetta, and Swedish House Mafia.

Sunburn Returns to Goa

In 2022 and 2023, Sunburn returned to Goa’s Vagator Beach. However, when the festival’s 2024 edition was announced for late December in South Goa, the local community reacted strongly. Concerned citizens feared the potential disruption to the quiet beaches due to loud music, drug use, and environmental damage. Many residents who witnessed the aftermath of the festival in North Goa were adamant that the event should not return.

Sunburn has blocked me because of the last time we tried (and were successful) in banning the festival.

It is time to start protesting again. After ruining the North, they are now targeting South Goa. We don’t want Sunburn in Goa. #BanSunburn #BanSunburn #BanSunburn https://t.co/MolswhcmOX

— Joanna (@thatdoggonelady) July 13, 2024

Rising Noise Pollution

Noise pollution has become a significant issue for Goa’s residents, with complaints about nearby beach clubs playing music at volumes that disturb communities up to 4 km away. Janie Crasto, a resident, expressed how the noise particularly affects her son, who suffers from seizures and autism, making it difficult for him to rest in such an environment.

Legal Disputes

Sunburn has also faced legal challenges, with a local court ordering a report on the festival’s noise levels in 2022. In addition, the event has unpaid dues to the local community that owns the land where the festival was previously held. These issues have further fueled the opposition to the festival’s return to Goa.

Despite local resistance, the Goa government and tourism industry continue to promote Sunburn as a major cultural event. The Travel and Tourism Association of Goa (TTAG) highlighted the festival’s positive impact on tourism and the local economy. However, critics question whether the festival benefits Goa during its peak tourist season.

Uncertain Venue and Ticket Sales

Although Sunburn 2024’s venue remains unconfirmed, tickets have been on sale for months, with prices ranging from Rs 2,500 to Rs 1,475,000 for a VVIP experience.

Impact on Goa’s Heritage and Residents

Goa’s concerns about preserving its ecosystem are longstanding. Protests against tourism date back to 1987, when locals rallied against West German tourists arriving in Goa. With a population of 1.46 million, the state has witnessed a sharp rise in tourist numbers, growing from 5.2 million in 2015 to over 8.5 million in 2023.

In addition to environmental concerns, many locals are frustrated by tourists invading historic Portuguese colonial homes for social media content. According to writer Merril Diniz, residents frequently deal with entitled behavior from influencers who disrupt their privacy without consent.

The Independent reached out to the Sunburn Festival’s organizers for their response to the growing controversies, but they declined to comment.

In the wake of the passing of Padma Vibhushan Ratan Tata, a flood of misinformation began circulating on social media, particularly on WhatsApp, claiming that his beloved dog, ‘Goa,’ had died just days after his master’s demise. These rumors, widely shared on various platforms, suggested that the pet passed away in grief, striking a chord with many animal lovers. However, this claim has been debunked as entirely false. The dog is alive and well, as confirmed by reliable sources.

Mumbai Police Officer Debunks the Fake News

Sudhir Kudalkar, a senior police officer in Mumbai known for his advocacy for animal welfare, took it upon himself to verify the viral message regarding Goa’s alleged death. Kudalkar shared a widely circulated WhatsApp forward that read, “Sad news…Tata’s pet dog GOA DIES AFTER 3 DAYS OF HIS DEATH… That’s why they say dogs are more faithful to their masters than human beings.” Upon seeing the message, Kudalkar reached out to Shantanu Naidu, a close aide and friend of the late Ratan Tata. Naidu confirmed that the news about Goa’s death was untrue and that the dog was in good health.

Ratan Tata’s Legacy and Love for Animals

Ratan Tata, a revered Indian industrialist and philanthropist, passed away on October 9, 2024, due to age-related issues at 86. Known for his incredible contributions to India’s industrial growth and charitable initiatives, Tata was also a dedicated animal lover. He adopted his dog, Goa, from the streets of Goa over a decade ago, during a visit to the state. His love for animals extended beyond his personal life—he recently built an animal hospital in Mahalakshmi, Mumbai, to care for stray and injured animals.

In touching scenes at Tata’s funeral, images of Goa mourning beside his master’s coffin moved many, adding an emotional layer to the tributes paid to the late industrialist. However, the false news of Goa’s death has caused confusion and distress, prompting the need for clarification.

Beware of Fake News

This incident serves as a reminder to always verify facts before sharing information online, especially when it concerns sensitive topics. </excerpt>

With his death on Wednesday at the age of 86 in a Mumbai hospital, Ratan Tata will be remembered as the industrialist and philanthropist icon who led Tata Group to global prominence with visionary leadership that remained deeply committed to humanitarian causes. His contributions to India’s industrial growth and his generosity in charitable endeavors will make a lasting legacy.

Tata’s humanitarian work went beyond business and touched the lives of many, including animals. He was well known for loving dogs. He was close to his pet dog, Goa. For this bond, visuals showed Goa sitting outside the lawns of the National Centre for the Performing Arts, Mumbai where Tata’s mortal remains lay in respect to people paying their last respects.

On the stage of the NCPA stood the public and dignitaries bidding their final adieux to a much-beloved figure, Tata, whom people admired and revered for his humility and kindness. Of them was Goa, that stood silently and paid homage to the owner he loved in an offhand yet moving way.

Ratan Tata had not only redrawn the industrial sceneries of India through his extraordinary career but also acted as a big philanthropist with regard to education, health, and rural development of the country. It is a great loss for the nation indeed.

The presence of Goa at the memorial brought out the close nature that there was between Tata and his loyal companion, thus adding an emotional touch to an otherwise grave moment.

Goa was much more than the plaything of Ratan Tata. He was probably a constant visitor to Bombay House-the headquarters of Tata Group. He had rescued the stray dog in Goa. Naming it after the very place where they had met and took him back home to Mumbai. Gradually, all of them became a part of Tata’s life. He already had some dogs at home.

In a heartwarming show of loyalty, Goa was spotted in the procession as he bid goodbye to the man who had given him a home and a chance for life again. Tata had earlier posted on Instagram, “A few heart-warming moments with the adopted Bombay House dogs this Diwali, especially Goa, my office companion,” showcasing his love for pets. Tito and Tango were also part of his family throughout his life.

Much more than a pet and owner, they were lifetime bonds that such pets inspired in Tata so much that, in 2018, he had once cancelled plans to receive a lifetime achievement award from King Charles III (then Prince Charles) because one of his dogs had fallen seriously ill. His friend Suhel Seth recalled, “Tango and Tito, my dogs-one of them has fallen terribly ill. I cannot leave him and come.”

This incident once again showed how committed Tata was to his pets; it demonstrated how close they were to him and not just pets but families.

</excerpt>

A Christian senior citizen from Pakistan, now living in Goa, received an Indian citizenship certificate on Wednesday under the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA). The certificate was presented by Chief Minister Pramod Sawant.

Joseph Francis A. Pereira, currently residing in Cansaulim, South Goa, is the first person in the state to obtain Indian citizenship through the CAA. In an interview with ANI, Joseph expressed his gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah for enacting the CAA.

“CAA was applied and within one month, the approval has come. I am very grateful to the CAA that was brought by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah,” he said.

Joseph Pereira was the only applicant for citizenship, as his wife was already an Indian citizen. He explained, “I went to Pakistan in 1960 for my education and later worked in Bahrain for 37 years. After retiring in 2013, I came to Goa and have been living here with my family since then. There are many Goans in Pakistan, but I haven’t visited there since 1979. It was tough during my school years in Pakistan due to the lack of job opportunities.”

His wife, Martha Pereira, also spoke to ANI, mentioning that they had been trying to obtain citizenship since their marriage but faced many obstacles. “Since we got married, we have been applying, but nothing was working out. We applied through the CAA in June this year. Without the CAA, there would have been many hurdles,” she said. “I am thankful for whatever is happening in our case,” she added.

On this occasion, Goa CM Pramod Sawant stated that granting citizenship under the CAA is a matter of pride. “I thank the Prime Minister and the Home Minister. Those who were in Pakistan or elsewhere have been seeking citizenship for nearly 60 years. Now, after the law has been passed, we are able to provide it, and it is a matter of pride for us,” he said.

The Citizenship Amendment Act allows Hindus, Sikhs, Jains, Christians, Parsis, and Buddhists from neighboring countries (Bangladesh, Pakistan, and Afghanistan) who entered India before December 31, 2014, to apply for citizenship after proper verification.

</excerpt>

Goan feni is a traditional liquor, which is unique to the Indian state of Goa, distilled from cashew apples or coconut palm sap.

It’s renowned for its distinct flavor and potency, often enjoyed neat or in cocktails. Goa is famous for feni due to its rich history and cultural significance, deeply rooted in local traditions and festivities.

Cashews (kajus) are particularly special in Goa because they are not only a staple crop but also integral to making feni. The cashew fruit, which surrounds the nut, is used to produce cashew feni, giving it a fruity and nutty flavor profile. Cashews are also celebrated in Goan cuisine, appearing in various dishes, sweets like cashew nut barfi (kaju barfi), and as snacks. Their versatility and quality have made Goan cashews sought-after both locally and internationally.

Check out the Recipe for making Goan Cashew Feni:

– Ripe cashew apples (also known as cashew fruits)
– Water

Equipment Needed:
– Large vessel or container
– Grinder or mortar and pestle
– Distillation apparatus (copper pot still)

Instructions:

1. Harvesting Cashew Apples:
– Cashew apples are harvested when they ripen, usually around February to May in Goa.

2. Removing Cashew Nuts:
– Separate the cashew nuts (seeds) from the cashew apples. These nuts are usually processed separately for consumption.

3. Preparation of Cashew Apple Juice:
– Wash the cashew apples thoroughly to remove any dirt or impurities.
– Crush the cashew apples to extract their juice. This can be done using a grinder or mortar and pestle. Some traditional methods involve crushing them manually.

4. Fermentation:
– Transfer the crushed cashew apple pulp and juice into a large vessel or container.
– Add water in a ratio of about 3:1 (water to cashew apple juice). Mix well.

5. Fermentation Process:
– Allow the mixture to ferment for about 3 to 5 days. During this time, natural fermentation occurs, converting sugars into alcohol.

6. Distillation:
– After fermentation, transfer the fermented cashew apple mixture into the copper pot still of a distillation apparatus.
– Heat the mixture slowly. The alcohol evaporates first due to its lower boiling point compared to water.
– Condense the alcohol vapor back into liquid form through the cooling coil of the distillation apparatus.
– Collect the distilled liquid, which is now feni.

7. Storage:
– Store the feni in clean, airtight bottles or containers. It can be enjoyed immediately or aged for a smoother flavor.

Serving Tips

– Enjoy Goan cashew feni neat, chilled, or mixed into cocktails like the popular Feni Colada or Feni Sour.

– Distilling feni is a traditional craft and requires careful attention to detail to ensure quality and safety.
– Consumption should be in moderation as feni is a potent alcoholic beverage.

This recipe outlines the traditional method used in Goa to make cashew feni, a beloved and unique spirit with deep cultural roots in the region.

Minister of Social Welfare Subhash Phal Desai and DGP Jaspal Singh flagged off the 10 km run under the theme “Run Against Drugs” from Dr Shyama Prasad Mukherjee Stadium in Panaji, in the presence of SP (ANC) Akshat Kaushal IPS and other police officials.

SP (ANC) Akshat Kaushal, IPS, emphasized that the event aimed not only at enforcement but also at raising awareness. He stated, “The message behind the race is to send a message to all citizens, especially youth, to stay away from drugs. At ANC we lay a lot of emphasis on educating the youth about the ill effects of drugs. We are asking the participants to chase the runner’s high and not the high they get from drugs. Despite the weather people have turned up in large numbers and they are running.”

Approximately 1000 participants registered for the event, with around 400 runners, including youth, women, police personnel, and community members from various backgrounds, despite the rainy weather, displaying strong enthusiasm and commitment to the cause.

The run serves as a vibrant platform to rally the community against narcotics and underscores the ongoing efforts of the Anti Narcotics Cell in Goa.

Even though the southwest monsoon hasn’t fully arrived, Goa has been experiencing rains since Friday. “This is the best time to be on the beaches. But it is not the right time to swim. One can go up to knee-deep water, but swimming is strictly prohibited,” cautioned Pele, a local fisherman from Benaulim Beach.

Due to rough seas, fishing activities have halted, with an official ban on motorized vessels from June 1 to July 31. Traditional fishermen also refrain from venturing into the sea during this period.

Drishti Lifesaving Services, the state-appointed lifeguard agency, has placed red flags along the coast and increased beach patrols. With the change in season, tourist numbers have significantly decreased, leaving the beaches virtually empty.

“Goan beaches are cleaner during the monsoon. There are no shacks and no hurdles. You can walk freely on the beaches,” observed Rahul Gaikwad, a tourist from Mumbai, enjoying the tranquillity with his family.

Hotel tariffs drop considerably during the rainy season, making accommodation more affordable for tourists. The state tourism department is promoting year-round tourism, emphasizing the lush greenery and regenerative tourism, which encourages exploration of Goa’s hinterlands alongside its beaches.

</excerpt>

As the global community celebrates World Bee Day, Goa is witnessing a renewed effort by both locals and the state government to combat the alarming decline in its bee population. World Bee Day, observed on May 20, highlights the importance of bees and their crucial role in our ecosystem.

Local Efforts to Save Bees in Goa

In Aldona Market, Savio D’Cunha, a passionate apiculturist, showcased a glass-lid box buzzing with stingless Trigona bees. These bees, despite their small size, play a vital role in pollination, flying thousands of miles to collect nectar. Savio, advocating for the preservation of bee habitats, lamented the destruction of vegetation in Goa, which has led to a decline in bee populations.

Savio, along with other local apiculturists, emphasized the significance of various bee species in Goa, including Apis Dorsata, Apis Florea, and Apis Cerana Indica. He highlighted the medicinal value of the rare honey produced by stingless bees, particularly from the karvi flower that blooms once every eight years.

Government and Community Initiatives

The state government and local communities are making concerted efforts to encourage beekeeping. Father Michael D’Costa from Don Bosco Vocational Training Institute in Quepem organizes one-day beekeeping workshops to educate and train locals. Savio D’Cunha also sells bee boxes to promote beekeeping, while P Shaliyo, a beekeeping master trainer, stresses the importance of bees in boosting crop yields and advocates for planting more pollen and honey-yielding plants.

The Bardez Beekeepers Society, led by President Allwyn Sequeira, aims to increase its membership from 100 to 1,000 by 2030, demonstrating a growing interest in apiculture.

Global Perspective and Urgent Need for Action

According to the United Nations, bees are under significant threat worldwide, with species extinction rates 100 to 1,000 times higher than normal due to human activities. The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) estimates that bees and other pollinators contribute between $235 billion and $577 billion to annual global food production through pollination.

World Bee Day Significance

World Bee Day, designated by the UN, coincides with the birthday of Anton Janša, a pioneer of modern beekeeping from Slovenia. This day aims to raise awareness of the importance of pollinators, the threats they face, and their contribution to sustainable development.

Bee Facts:

The honey bee is the only insect that produces food for humans.

A honey bee can fly up to 15 miles per hour and visits 50-100 flowers in one trip.

A pound of honey is made by 2 million flower visits, with bees flying 55,000 miles back and forth.

A honey bee worker makes an average of 1/12 of a teaspoon of honey in her lifetime.

One ounce of honey can fuel a bee’s flight around the world.

Honey bees beat their wings 11,400 times per minute, creating the buzzing noise.

An average hive has 50,000 to 60,000 worker bees.

As efforts continue in Goa and around the world, the message is clear: protecting bees is crucial for our environment, food security, and biodiversity.

</excerpt>

A barber named Mohammed Amaan from the city diligently saved money for six months to take his girlfriend on a dream vacation to Goa. However, their romantic getaway took an unexpected turn when Amaan found himself involved in a police chase after the girl’s family accused him of kidnapping. According to SHO Alok Rao of Mohanlalganj, Amaan allegedly persuaded his girlfriend to go on a trip to Goa with him.

“Amaan and the girl resided in the same neighborhood, and he developed strong feelings for her,” stated the SHO. After saving for six months, Amaan planned their travel, booking flights to Delhi and then onward to Goa. “Upon receiving the kidnapping complaint from the girl’s family, we initiated an investigation,” the SHO added.

Utilizing surveillance and cyber cell resources, the police traced digital footprints from Amaan’s email, leading them to discover the flight bookings and eventually intercept the couple at Goa airport on Saturday, as per a senior police officer.

The SHO mentioned that the police will now take the girl’s statement to determine whether she went on the trip willingly or was coerced.

He countered Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi’s remarks about fair elections, asserting that the NDA government led by PM Modi is preferred for the development of India.

Sawant expressed confidence in the NDA’s prospects in Maharashtra and suggested strong possibilities for the BJP-JDS alliance in Karnataka. Additionally, Sawant, along with former Karnataka CM BS Yediyurappa, supported the BJP’s candidate from Belagavi Lok Sabha seat during his nomination filing. This candidate, Shettar, switched back to the BJP after leaving for the Congress last year.

Shettar is now contesting in place of Mangala Angadi, who was denied renomination. Karnataka’s elections will take place in two phases – April 26 and May 7, as part of the broader Lok Sabha Elections 2024 spanning seven phases, starting from April 19, with vote counting scheduled for June 4.

</excerpt>

Ramesh Verma, Goa’s Chief Electoral Officer said that efforts have been put in the border areas and items worth a total of Rs 12.89 crores have been seized till now, ahead of the upcoming Lok Sabha polls.

“From the day of the announcement of the elections on March 16 till now, we have already seized items worth Rs 12.89 crore. The seized items include narcotics, drugs, cash, and liquor. Similar kinds of cases come to light daily. We follow SOPs issued by the Election Commission of India to deal with such cases,” Verma said.

He also stated that they are actively working to communicate to the local population that they can have confidence in their local team and that the upcoming elections will be conducted with integrity and fairness. He stressed that conducting the elections presents its own set of difficulties. “We are taking security measures. We are continuously working with the police department,” he added.

“We have come up with eco-friendly initiatives keeping Lok Sabha elections in view. We are carrying out plantation. We are planning to attain the target of 10k plantations per day. We are planting medicinal and fruit plants,” he said.

Drawing attention to the objective behind doing so he said, “Every vote is important. Everyone should vote. That is what we are trying to convey through the plantation. Like every plant has a role to play, every vote counts.”

Ramesh Verma mentioned that voting is a Nation-building exercise. “We are going to ensure medical facilities at the poll booths. The voters can get themselves checked there,” he added.

Remarkably, both Lok Sabha constituencies in Goa—North Goa and South Goa—will undergo voting simultaneously on May 7 in a singular phase.

The electoral process for the 543 Lok Sabha seats will span across seven phases commencing on April 19.
Her father, Gopal Hamal, reported his elder daughter, Aarti, missing on Monday, prompting the Goa police to register a case and launch a search operation. Aarti had been residing at an Osho meditation center in Goa for several months and was last seen near Ashwem Beach.

Gopal Hamal, mayor of Dhangadhi sub-metropolitan city, revealed that they received information from Aarti’s friend about losing contact with her. Despite attempts to reach her, there was no response, leading the family to notify the authorities.

“My elder daughter Aarti is an Osho meditator and has been living in Goa for the past few months. However, I received a message from her friend stating that she lost contact with Aarti near Zorba Beach, Ashwem yesterday. I request those living in Goa to assist in the search for my daughter, Aarti,” Mr. Hamal stated.

He also mentioned that his younger daughter, Arzoo, and son-in-law were flying to Goa to aid in the search efforts.

Aarti’s sister, Arzoo Hamal, provided updates on Facebook, noting that some callers reported sighting Aarti near a bridge in Siolim. Despite the assistance received, there was uncertainty about her whereabouts. An FIR was lodged, and the family remained hopeful of locating Aarti soon.

</excerpt>

Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant voiced assurance that the BJP will secure victory in both the North Goa and South Goa seats in the forthcoming Lok Sabha elections.

Pramod Sawant said, “I am fully confident that Goa BJP will win both seats, North Goa and South Goa this time. With the kind enthusiasm that is there among the workers, we will win both seats 100 percent. I thank PM Modi because he has given reservation to women this time too (in their candidature).”

As per the timetable, Goa is slated to cast its votes in a single phase on May 7 for its two Lok Sabha constituencies.

The coastal state comprises two Lok Sabha constituencies: North Goa and South Goa.
In its initial list of 195 candidates, the BJP nominated Shripad Yesso Naik to contest from North Goa.

Pallavi Dempo, the executive director of Dempo Industries, has made history as the first woman candidate in BJP’s electoral history in Goa. She will contest the Lok Sabha elections on the party ticket from South Goa.

The BJP has won this constituency only twice since 1962.

During the 2019 general elections, the BJP candidate Shripad Yesso Naik emerged victorious in the North Goa seat, whereas the South Goa seat was secured by Congress candidate Cosme Francisco Caitano Sardinha.

The 2024 Lok Sabha elections will be conducted over seven phases, commencing on April 19 and concluding on June 1. The results are scheduled to be announced on June 4.

In Gujarat, the Congress will vie for 24 seats, while AAP will field candidates in 2 seats. In Haryana, the Congress will contest 9 seats, and AAP will present candidates for 1 seat. In Delhi, AAP will lead in four seats, and the Congress will compete in three.

Mukul Wasnik, Congress general secretary and MP, clarified, “Gujarat has 26 Lok Sabha seats. Congress will contest on 24. AAP will have its candidates on 2 seats – Bharuch and Bhavnagar. Haryana has 10 Lok Sabha seats. Congress will contest on 9. AAP will have its candidates on 1 seat – in Kurukshetra.”

For Delhi, AAP will compete in New Delhi, West Delhi, South Delhi, and East Delhi, while the Congress will vie for seats in Chandni Chowk, North East, and North West. Wasnik noted that after extensive discussions, it was decided that the Congress would contest the Chandigarh seat. In Goa, the Congress will contest both Lok Sabha seats.

No statements were issued regarding Punjab, where AAP assumed power in 2022, displacing the Congress. AAP had previously declared its intention to contest all 13 Lok Sabha seats in Punjab. Despite their historical rivalry in Punjab and Delhi, AAP and Congress collaborated in the Chandigarh mayoral elections last month and secured victory with Supreme Court intervention.

AAP MP Sandeep Pathak, in announcing the alliance, stressed the urgency of an honest and robust alternative to address the country’s current state. He highlighted concerns such as the weakening of institutions, alleged election manipulation, the incarceration of opposition leaders, injustice to farmers, unemployment, and inflation. Pathak underscored the significance of prioritizing the nation over party interests in this alliance.

</excerpt>

Amid the disturbing murder case of Suchana Seth’s four-year-old son in Goa, court documents accessed by NDTV reveal a tumultuous legal history, with Ms. Seth previously filing domestic violence charges against her husband, PR Venkat Raman, in August. The shocking case, characterized by a bitter divorce battle, unfolded further as it was disclosed that Ms. Seth had sought Rs 2.5 lakh per month in alimony, alleging annual earnings of over Rs 1 crore by her husband.

The court documents illustrate that Ms. Seth submitted copies of WhatsApp messages, pictures, and medical records to support her claims of domestic abuse against Mr. Raman. In response, he denied the charges, leading to the issuance of a restraining order against him, preventing any contact with Ms. Seth and their child.

Despite the restraining order, Mr. Raman was granted weekly visitation rights, allowing him to see the child every Sunday. This arrangement reportedly upset Ms. Seth, and investigators are exploring whether this court order played a role in the tragic incident that unfolded in Goa.

The last hearing for the domestic violence case occurred on December 12, more than three weeks before the fatal incident in a Candolim service apartment. The court had adjourned the matter to January 29, marking a significant legal development before the disturbing events took place.

Suchana Seth, the CEO accused of murdering her son, has been charged with a “premeditated” crime based on the discovery of empty cough syrup bottles at the crime scene. The post-mortem report suggested that the child may have been smothered.

The marital discord between Ms. Seth and Mr. Raman came to light, revealing that they were married in November 2010, and their son was born in August 2019. Ms. Seth informed the court that she had been living separately from her husband since March 2021.

The tragedy deepened as it was revealed that Ms. Seth, possibly attempting suicide after the alleged murder, was found with slashed wrists. The legal battle surrounding the divorce and domestic violence charges now adds a complex layer to the investigation, shedding light on the strained relationships and tumultuous history between the accused CEO and her estranged husband.

Suchana Seth, the 39-year-old CEO and founder of Bengaluru-based artificial intelligence start-up Mindful AI Lab, has been apprehended in Karnataka’s Chitradurga after allegedly murdering her four-year-old son during their stay at a north Goa hotel. The arrest follows a sequence of events involving bloodstains, observant hotel staff, and a resourceful taxi driver.

Ms. Seth, accompanied by her son, checked into Sol Banyan Grande in Candolim on January 6. However, on January 8, she left the hotel alone, carrying a large bag that later revealed her son’s lifeless body. Hotel staff discovered bloodstains in the room during cleaning, prompting them to alert the Goa police.

Despite being advised to take a flight to Bengaluru, Ms. Seth insisted on a taxi for the approximately 600 km journey. The hotel staff, recognizing the urgency, called for a taxi, leading to the involvement of a quick-thinking cab driver.

Upon reaching Chitradurga, approximately 200 km from Bengaluru, the police discreetly approached the cab driver in Konkani, attempting to gather information without alerting Ms. Seth. Her misleading statements about her son’s location raised suspicions, and the police directed the cab driver to a nearby police station for further inquiry.

Senior police officer Nidhin Valson praised the vigilance of hotel employees and the calm demeanor of the cab driver, acknowledging their crucial roles in the case. The unfolding tragedy has left many questions unanswered, including the motive behind the alleged murder. Ms. Seth, known for her achievements in the field of artificial intelligence, is facing serious charges as the investigation continues.

Details surrounding the strained relationship with her husband, currently abroad, and the divorce proceedings are being explored. The police are carefully scrutinizing the circumstances leading to the tragic incident, with a post-mortem examination scheduled for the child’s body. CCTV footage from the hotel is under examination, and a forensics team is actively collecting additional evidence. The investigation remains ongoing, emphasizing the need for thorough verification of the details provided by Ms. Seth during questioning.
